Navillera just dropped on NF in my region, and soon will Vincenzo. On Viki I've got Taxi Driver, Bossam, and Youth of May - there's also Daebak Real Estate which I may catch up with later, and I don't even have the time find out where to watch Law School (sorry Kim Bum, I'll see you later!) and for the first time in months I'm spoiled for choice, yay!

The fallout from the pandemic has had drastically different effects in the global entertainment industry. The AMC theater chain in the US lost more than $550 million last year due to closures and lack of movie releases. Large Korean media companies had mixed results but showed evidence of the rapidly expanding shift to new, global digital distribution models.

CJ ENM recorded sales of 791.9 billion won in the first quarter of 2021 on a consolidated basis for K-IFRS, and operating profit of 93.6 billion won, a 135.7% increase from the same period last year. ) Disclosed. Operating profit is the largest quarter ever. The performance was driven by high growth in digital-based sales such as TV advertisement sales and Teabing based on content competitiveness.
The media division recorded a record-high operating margin of KRW 386.2 billion in sales and KRW 53.8 billion in operating profit, up 1,283.6% year-on- year. In the first quarter, TV ad sales increased 24.5% year-on-year in part by popular television series.'. In addition, due to the launch of original Teabing streaming service and strategic collaboration with
JTBC and However, the film division recorded sales of 22.7 billion won and operating loss of 100 million won. Theater sales declined as the release of new works was delayed due to Corona 19, but sales of additional edition rights centered on the existing library increased 40.5% compared to the previous quarter, contributing to the performance due to the increase in demand for on- demand movies. An official from CJ ENM said, “In the first quarter, we made steps to reinforce our digital business capabilities, including the release of Teabing's original contents and the launch of'CJ On Style', an integrated brand focused on live commerce.” We will continue to grow by strengthening content and product competitiveness.”

Studio Dragon's sales in the first quarter of 2021 were KRW 117.1 billion, down 2.7% from the same period last year. On the other hand, operating profit rose 53.6% year-on-year to 17.9 billion won. The improvement in operating profit can be attributed to the remarkable improvement in the profit structure due to the increase in the selling price of new products and the reduction in production cost. In particular, the operating margin increased by 5.6
percentage points year-on-year to 15.3%, realizing quantitative growth.

Program sales in the first quarter of this year were KRW 43.8 billion, down 3.2% from the previous year. Compared to the same period of the previous year, two films were reduced, but all of the organized films succeeded in box office success and increased the influence of viewers. Sales revenue also recorded 63.2 billion won, down 5.5% from the previous year. Considering the decrease in the number of broadcasts, VOD sales and digital platform expansion are maintaining solid sales. In the second quarter, it is expected to increase its influence and efficiency by diversifying genres and strengthening...

.. the completion of each work.
Studio Dragon's CEO Kang Cheol said, “Efforts for consistent structural changes, such as increasing bargaining power and lowering costs, led to improved performance. We will advance to a wider stage by strengthening the company, developing franchise IP, and working on global projects."
Korean media companies and production studios have realized that the Korean home market is small and shrinking based upon birth rate declines and aging population. The driver of film sales is universal: children and young adults. This week, the number of daily moviegoers reached a seven-month high on the Children's Day holiday thanks to strong performances by animated films holding five of the top ten spots. A total of 326,000 people went to theaters Wednesday, up sharply from 77,000 tallied the previous day. It is the highest daily box-office number since Oct. 3 when it hit 389,000 amid the five-day Chuseok holiday, the Korean version of Thanksgiving.
"The Croods: A New Age," an American animated adventure film released on Children's Day, topped the daily list, garnering 102,000 people. It is the strongest opening day record in 2021, beating Disney-Pixar's "Soul," which sold 66,000 tickets on its first day of Jan. 20 and the award-winning "Minari" with 40,000 attendees on March 3. Also, it is the first time in nearly 40 days that a film has attracted more than 100,000 moviegoers on a single day since the U.S. monster film "Godzilla vs. Kong" achieved the feat in March.

However, the break-even point for domestic releases is still 3 to 4 million ticket buyers. Studios are wary of investing production costs on domestic films until box office reaches pre-pandemic sales. The key for production companies is globally exporting Korean content to expand its market (viewership). But at the same time, since there is over supply of unemployed talent for a small demand for new productions (films and series), production companies like Studio Dragon appear to have leveraged the imbalance to cut costs and budgets for talent and staff in order to minimize direct losses. This may be why recently recent K-actors have signed foreign agency contracts in the hope of getting higher talent fees in foreign productions.

Hello! I just registered after being a silent lurker for years. I have been watching dramas since 2012. My favorite genre is sageuk and my favorite drama is CHUNO. Last year I started composing piano music inspired by Korean dramas, and have composed 17 pieces so far. I will upload them to my wall gradually, so please stop by, listen, and comment. Thank you!

This is a wonderful place. To be honest I'm not sure what my favorite genre is, I watch them all.
Mainly though, I will watch anything OCN does. period.
And I'll check out your piano pieces too!

(Source: https://www.koreaboo.com/news/mystery-college-student-death-friend-suspicious-behavior/) I am interested with this article and I found this mysterious Korean med student's disappearance that shocked not only in South Korea but a bit of worldwide. He later found dead and the investigation was still ongoing. According to Seoul Metropolitan Polic Department that:

It is in the best interest of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Department to investigate all possibilities. It is necessary to check all the leads in order to find out the truth.

I should related to any K-crime dramas along with some of the regular OCN crime drama shows.

I see! A picture! Of my best baby Chae Soo Bin!!! A goddess. I had to come to pay my respects.

In other news, it has been 5 days since Vincenzo ended and my Chacenzo heart might finally be ready to let go. I think I can now start a new show without wishing it was Vincenzo the entire time.

Happy Friday!

I misread my calendar; I actually had another week before the start of the semester...Surprisingly, the unexpected free time threw me off and I took a break from dramaland (after finishing Vincenzo last weekend).

Instead, I went on a crazy binge on shows outside of dramaland.

I watched Love, Victoron Disney+ which I loved a lot more than I had expected. Felix has been officially added to my list of favourite male characters alongside Pacey Witter and Ron Weasley . I also rewatched Love, Simon afterwards and it was just as good as when I saw it in cinema.

I binged Shadow and Bone on Netflix since I kept seeing fanedits pop up on youtube and I was in the mood for some fantasy. It did not disappoint. I am debating whether I want to read the books but I heard Mal isn’t as great a character in them...is that true?

Finally, I am currently rewatching Stranger Things. It’s fun to witness once more Steve’s growth from one of my least liked character to one of my absolute fav. The show is still iconic. If only season 4 hadn’t been delayed...

Once I am done with ST I am thinking of picking up Youth of May. Does it look promising so far?

The Scoop Troop was the best part of season 3 for me.

I haven't watched a kdrama since Mr. Queen.
Why?
College professor dumping five weeks worth of classes on us in three hours.
3 HOURS!?!
I haven't been able to stop sweating since...
Okay, that's not my only why, really. Am I the only one who doesn't have time these days? 🤓
I might just start watching Vicenzio or Daebak Real Estate (Jang Nara 🔥) to stress-relief and regret it later.
Happy weekend guys, I missed y'all 🤩😂

Also the idol group competition on Kingdom the Legend is amazing, so glad they got to have a sports field day (go sunbae Minhyuk). Have a great weekend, beanies!

What non-covid things are making the news in your area?

Such a good news story in my country this week (https://www.tvnz.co.nz/one-news/new-zealand/he-slept-some-bunny-rabbits-axles-dad-reveals-3-year-old-said-night-lost-in-tolaga-bay-bush), about a three year old who wandered off and was out in the bush overnight - he was missing 21 hours dressed in just a nappy and T-shirt. I thought for sure it was going to have a sad ending when they were looking him, but they found him safe over 3km away from home.

Happy weekend Beanies and keep Beaning On!

It has been a terrible week at work, mainly because the higher ups made it very clear that any emotion aside from feeling fantastic is not tolerated.😢
I am aware that I nag on OT every week, but THANK YOU for taking my mental health seriously and letting me nag every week!❤️

Could C-drama The Long Ballad chance to be a recap, weecap, review or drama hangout?

Some beanies loves this unlike me. If it happens, it will be our first C-drama Dramabeans entry. I think if either @stroopwafel, @sailorjumun or @missvictrix can handle this if someone will like this C-drama.

This is a kdrama site. I don't think the recappers are fluent in Mandarin. Beanies discuss cdramas on OT and their own walls but that is the extent of it.

I visit 3 Chinese entertainment blogs. The contributors are all too busy to do recaps. They might write series reviews once in a while. Cdramas, with their many episodes and fast release schedules, are especially tough to recap.

I recommended watching for Beanies was this three Filipino remakes of a K-dramas: My Love from Another Star, Descendants of the Sun and currently-airing Encounter.

Filipino version of Descendants of the Sun might available only on Netflix in some regions.

If you love this and either @stroopwafel, @laica, @sailorjumun or @missvictrix, is there were any chance to either Dramabeans recap, weecap or review?

Filipino My love From A Star full series is free on Youtube. It appears the lovers of the original series may be able to recite the dialog line-for-line (in translation).

Doom at Your Service and Move to Heaven are coming up next week.

For Doom at Your Service, I wish @missvictrix could write a weecap.

For Move to Heaven, I think @dramallama would write this series review or even @missvictrix.
