Drama viewership ratings for the week of Aug. 16-22, 2021

I don’t know about y’all, but I am so ready for this drama season to be over. It’s been a long few months, with several shows that only air once a week. Nevertheless was one of those shows, and it finally (much emphasis on finally) ended its 10-episode run. The finale garnered 1.7 percent, its highest rating being its premiere at 2.2 percent.
We also had the finale of The Devil Judge, which ended as well as it started. For the most part, there hasn’t been much change in numbers for the rest of our shows. One nice thing to note, however, is that newcomer Police University made a jump to 8.5 percent. If it keeps up the pace, we could maybe see its ratings go into double digits very soon.

I think dramas are rumored to start in both the Monday/Tuesday and Wednesday/Thursday timeslots in October.
They've been pre-producing their dramas this year. Some dramas have been taking 8-9 months to film, which is why we are seeing long gaps, I think.

Not exactly true, Fly High Butterfly finished filming June end and Sabotage City has also wrapped filming. That means there are at least 2 dramas that have finished filming that don't have any air date yet. However the Lee Yong Ae drama is still filming but already has a date and some promo. Snowdrop too just finished filming and already has a schedule. Almost all JTBC dramas this year have either flopped or had less than desirable ratings which explains the fewer dramas. They're trying to make up for all the money they lost in the 1st 2 quarters.

Nevertheless, YAMS, Road those numbers are embarrassing. OTVI isn't doing much better either but MBC has had much worse.

This year feels like it's been pretty uneven. I'm also looking forward for the new batch coming. Of late only the recently-completed Racket Boys and the soon-to-finish YAMS really caught my enthusiasm. I'm bummed that YAMS isn't getting good numbers - it's truly a beautifully done drama with incredible performances.

Oh so agree with @sailorjumen, this drama season needs to be over. Started thinking about what to happily anticipate and remembered Mt Jirisan/Cliffhanger. Does anybody know if Viki is picking it up?

If I'm not mistaken, Mount Jiri/Cliffhanger will be Iqiyi exclusive. Hence, it may not be available on Viki.

I thought My roommate s a gumiho and Monthly magazine home were also Iqiyi exclusive but they came to Viki later. So I guess it depends on dramas/the license contract...
Hope Mt Jirisan/Cliffhanger will be on Viki too!

I'm actually not ready for this drama season to be over. It's been good to me, and the upcoming dramas don't excite me much. Maybe I'll be surprised though. Who knew I would be this obsessed with a drama about home appliances, after all.

In terms of Nevertheless and YAMS, these are romance dramas and what I've noticed is that since 2020, romance dramas have been underperforming in terms of ratings except maybe crash landing on you. Even those dramas with Hallyu stars were between 4-6% which isn't really that great when you compare it to what is expected. On the other hand, most of these romance dramas do well on OTT, compared to the other genre dramas. Right now both nevertheless and YAMS are doing well in SKor on OTT. Internationally is a completely different situation though, because most watch only if they are a fan of the actors in the drama or if the drama is doing well in terms of ratings. Which is why nevertheless is well known internationally and YAMS not so much. KimDongWook is a name who is just recently coming up on international fans' radar despite being well-known in SKor and SeoHyunJin despite being very well known internationally as well as SKor, doesn't have what one would call a diehard fandom internationally.

Contrary to belief netflix is not a popular streaming site in SKor. They have already lost 1.5 million subscribers in the past 7 months and every month the number of subscribers becomes smaller. The biggest streaming sites in SKor are Wavve and TVing. The ranking on netflix korea doesn't hold any weight because most people don't use the service. However the ranking for nevertheless worldwide is a clear sign that the drama is extremely popular to audiences worldwide. SHJ doesn't have a die hard fandom anywhere not even in SKor. People only think of her as a good actress but nobody not locally or internationally will watch her dramas just because of her she isn't PSH.

If you are as bored with Kdramas as I am at the moment, and find Cdramas too politically and culturally oriented, then try a wonderful drama called "Summer Vacation", It's Japanese, it's 1996 but it is truly romantic, beautifully acted, has a wonderful musical theme, has you laughing and crying in the same episode, and I binge-watched it. I watched it twice. And to put it into some sort of perspective, I also loved Secret Garden, CLOY, Descendants of the Sun, Something in the Rain, etc.

You don't mean "Long Vacation" with Kimura Takuya do you? That was classic! He was really in his drama prime back then. I couldn't find Summer V. in1996. Am netflixing instead for now...waiting for new batch of dramas haha

This drama season wasn't exiting at all (except On the Verge of Insanity and Racket boys).
I'm sooo ready for the next drama season that starts from the end of Aug to Sep.

When one talk’s about “this drama season” what does one mean?
Jan. 2021 through August 2021?
If that is the case my bean count as of now would be:
1. RUN ON (10 of 16 episodes aired in 2021)
2. BEYOND EVIL
3. NAVILLERA
4. DARK HOLE
5. BOSSAM—STEAL THE FATE (6.042%)
6. YOUTH OF MAY
7. MOVE TO HEAVEN
8. RACKET BOYS
And hopefully
9. HOSPITAL PLAYLIST 2
10. ON THE VERGE OF INSANITY
Of those 10 dramas DARK HOLE is the only stinker. The other 9 were/are all fine dramas. HP 2 has by far the best ratings however of those 10 dramas I would not call HP 2 my favorite. If I was forced to pick one right now it might be RUN ON.
