News bites: May 28, 2022

  • I’m loving the color palette of TV Chosun’s new poster for The Witch Is Alive, as well as Lee Yuri’s (Lies of Lies) wild look. The black comedy also stars Lee Min-young (Love ft. Marriage and Divorce 3), Yoon So-yi (Get Revenge), Jung Sang-hoon (Again My Life), Kim Young-jae (Artificial City), and Ryu Yeon-seok (The Killer’s Shopping List), and is currently set to premiere on June 25. • Kim Min-kyu (Business Proposal) has picked a fantasy romance for his next drama — a web novel adaptation called High Priest Rembrary. The story has Kim playing a deity figure who one day finds himself in the body of a D-list idol singer and, naturally, hijinks ensue. Airing early next year in 2023, a broadcaster has not yet been announced. [MBC]
  • Kim Dong-wook (King of Pigs) and Jin Ki-joo (Showtime Begins!) have been paired for KBS’s upcoming You, Whom I Met By Chance, a time-slip drama about two people who get stuck in the year 1987. Premiering later this year, production will be helmed by PD Kang Soo-yeon and writer Baek So-yeon, who worked together previously on Tale of Nokdu. [KBS]

Kim Jung-eun, Kim Hae-sook, Lee Yumi, Ong Sung-woo, Byun Woo-seok

  • Expanding on the world of super women in JTBC’s Strong Woman Do Bong-soon, writer Baek Mi-kyung is back with a quasi-sequel called Strong Woman Kang Nam-soon (Kang being Do’s second cousin). With Lee Yumi (All of Us Are Dead) playing the central character, the main cast includes Kim Jung-eun (My Dangerous Wife), Kim Hae-sook (Tomorrow), Ong Sung-woo (Would You Like a Cup of Coffee), and Byun Woo-seok (Moonshine). PD Kim Jung-shik (Work Later, Drink Now) is attached to direct. [MBC]
  • Netflix drama Celebrity also announced their lineup this week, which includes Park Kyu-young (Dal-li and Gamjatang), Kang Min-hyuk (Oh! Master), Lee Chung-ah (Awaken), Lee Dong-gun (Leverage: Fraudsters), and Jeon Hyo-sung (Memorist). The story takes a close look at both the glamorous and not-so-glamorous sides of fame, and will be directed by PD Kim Chul-kyu (Flower of Evil) with scripts penned by Kim Yi-young (Haechi). [YTN]
  • In the meantime, Netflix’s upcoming Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area released a new poster this week featuring most of the main cast: Park Hae-soo (Squid Game), Jeon Jong-seo (Mona Lisa and the Blood Moon), Kim Ji-hoon (Flower of Evil), and Lee Hyun-woo (The Liar and His Lover) among others. Part one of the series launches June 24. [YTN]

  • Sohn Seok-gu (My Liberation Notes) and Choi Woo-shik (Our Beloved Summer) are in talks for a new drama called Murder DIEary (working title). Based on a popular webtoon, the story is a crime thriller and black comedy about an ordinary man who murders a serial killer by accident and is now being tracked by a police officer. PD Lee Chang-hwi (Hell Is Other People) will be the talent behind the camera. [Dispatch]
  • Red Velvet’s Joy (The One and Only) is becoming a police officer for Kakao TV’s new romance Unexpected Country Diary (roughly translated). Based on a popular web novel, the drama is slotted for later this year and will be written by Baek Eun-kyun with directing done by PD Kwon Seok-jang (Bossam: Steal the Fate). [KBS]
  • Over on MBC, Doctor Lawyer dropped another poster of So Ji-sub (My Secret Terrius) who stars alongside Shin Sung-rok (Kairos) and Im Soo-hyang (Woori the Virgin). Written by Jang Hong-chul (Class of Lies) and directed by PD Lee Yong-seok (Haechi, Village: Secret of Achiara), the medical suspense premieres next week on June 3. [MBC]

I liked the original Strong woman Do Bong-soon, despite its flawed writing and its obvious struggle with juggling its different genres and maintaining a consistent pace. Park Bo-young did an excellent job of carrying the drama even during its weaker moments and her comedic timing was aces. Ill give the sequel a chance (because i like Kim Hae-sook).

If people succeeded in the Arts based on talent alone, then Shin Sung-rok would be one of Korea's top leading men, happy to see him back on screen.

Murder DIEary will be an acting feast between Son Suk-ku and Choi Woo-shik.

Please give Kim Min-kyu an age-appropriate female lead for High Priest Rembrary.

3. - Bring anything Kim Dong Wook my way. I'll take it🤤☺️🤗.

4. - Kim Hae-sook's character wardrobes have been so so cool since Inspector Koo. More of this kind of roles for her in the future. It is nice to see her in this stereotype wardrobe change.

7. - The story itself is catchy, with the pull-me-in effect, I'm sold. Add Mr. Gu to the mix and I'm properly sold....dreamily.

8. - I'm a sucker for anything legal and medical and the wait for this is so so long. A mix of both is a must watch. Please be good, show.

- Looking forward to Strong Woman Kang Nam-soon. I went from obsessed to lukewarm during the original's run due to unnecessary side characters and weaker writing in it's latter half (also if i had to hear about poop wine one more time...) but the initial excitement and premise still makes for a promising drama.

And let's be real - I absolutely adore Kim Hae-Sook and Lee Yumi. Fingers crossed that feedback from the original season makes for a better spin-off!

- I'm so torn about You, Whom I Met By Chance. On one hand I would take a bullet for Jin Ki-joo - on the other I have such a strong, irrational dislike for Kim Dong-wook.

And when I say irrational, I really do mean irrational. I don't even know why I don't like him.

Gonna have to suck it up though, gotta do it for *her*.

- I love a black comedy and the premise for Murder DIEary seems so much up my alley. It feels like it will have a similar vibe to Psychopath Diary but perhaps a bit darker which I'm all for.

Lee Yuri is younger than me, but she will forever be my Unnie after Father is Strange. She looks so badass here, and I also like Yoon Soyi a lot. I don't know what this show is about, but I'll be watching.
