News bites: April 30, 2022

  • TVING’s Yumi’s Cells is back for Season 2 and coming to our screens this June. Along with our lovable lead Kim Go-eun (Yumi’s Cells), the second poster reveals a tiny glimpse of Got7’s Jinyoung who will also be reprising his role in the new season. Production continues under writers Song Jae-jung (Memories of the Alhambra, W-Two Worlds) and Kim Kyung-ran as well as PD Lee Sang-yub (A Piece of Your Mind), who is joined this time by PD Joo Sang-kyu (Pretty Noona Who Buys Me Food). [YTN (1), (2)]

  • Speaking of Jinyoung, he is currently in talks along with Noh Jung-eui (Our Beloved Summer) to star in a new romance drama called Witch. A broadcaster has not yet been confirmed, but film director Kim Tae-kyun (The Dark Figure of Crime) will be the talent behind the camera. Filming will commence once casting has been finalized. [Dispatch]
  • Disney+’s upcoming drama Connect confirmed casting for Jung Hae-in (Snowdrop), Go Kyung-pyo (Private Lives), Kim Hye-joon (Inspector Koo), and veteran actor Jang Kwang (Moonshine), among others. This webtoon adaptation tells the story of a man who becomes a victim of organ hunters and mysteriously forms a connection with the organ transplant recipient. A first in Korean drama history, directing will be helmed by a Japanese filmmaker, Takashi Miike (The Great Yokai War: Guardians). [YTN]

Lee Jong-seok, Yoon-ah

  • On the MBC front, preparations are underway for the hardboiled noir Big Mouth and the main lineup has been announced: Lee Jong-seok (Romance Is a Bonus Book), Yoon-ah (Hush), Kim Joo-hun (Soundtrack #1), Ok Ja-yeon (The Veil), Yang Kyung-won (One Ordinary Day, Vincenzo), and Kwak Dong-yeon (Monstrous). Written by Ha Ram and directed by PD Oh Choong-hwan (Start-Up), the drama is slotted to premiere in July following Dr. Lawyer. [MBC]
  • Writer Kim Soon-ok and PD Joo Dong-min, the makjang hitmakers of An Empress’s Dignity and the Penthouse series, are planning their next project on SBS: Escape of the 7. The cast is reported to include Hwang Jung-eum (Men Are Men) as well as Penthouse stars Eom Ki-joon, Shin Eun-kyung, and Yoon Jong-hoon (Shooting Stars). In the meantime, the ever busy Eom Ki-joon is also joining the cast of tvN’s Little Women which releases later this year. [Star News, YTN]
  • KBS drama Curtain Call (formerly Trees Die Standing) has secured Ha Ji-won (Chocolate) as the female lead, joining Kang Haneul (When the Camellia Blooms). With filming set to begin once the full cast has been signed on, PD Yoon Sang-ho (River Where the Moon Rises) is attached to direct, with scripts penned by Jo Sung-geol (The Target). [KBS]

  • I am loving the new poster for JTBC’s Cleaning Up, which leans into a fun, retro vibe with our three leading ladies: Yeom Jung-ah (SKY Castle), Jeon So-min (Show Window: The Queen’s House), and Kim Jae-hwa (True Beauty). The drama is slotted to follow My Liberation Notes, premiering in June. [JTBC]
  • MBC is lining up a new mystery thriller called Wild Boar Hunting, which stars Park Ho-san (Monstrous), Yeh Soo-jung (The King of Tears, Lee Bang-won), and Kim Soo-jin (School 2021). Written by Jo Beom-ki and directed by PD Song Yeon-hwa (The Red Sleeve Cuff), the story takes place in a quiet village where one of the residents suddenly go missing on the same day as the village boar hunt. [MBN]
  • Netflix announced that Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area will be releasing in two parts, and the first half of the series will drop on June 24. Starring Yoo Ji-tae (When My Love Blooms), Kim Yun-jin (Ms. Ma, Nemesis), and Park Hae-soo (Squid Game), production was led by PD Kim Hong-sun (LUCA: The Beginning) with a team of writers including Ryu Yong-jae (Psychopath Diary), Kim Hwan-chae (Psychopath Diary), and Choi Sung-joon. Ahead of the premiere, a new poster and video teaser were released. [MBC]

6. Looking forward to Curtain Call - especially if Jung Hae-in joins the cast - but I wonder if this is related to the play by Spanish writer Alejandro Casona (Los árboles mueren de pie)? Based on earlier news items, it sounds like it has a similar premise: a young man pretends to be an old woman's grandson in order to bring her some happiness before she dies. I actually hope it isn’t, because if yes, I’ve probably already been spoiled for some major plot developments. ☹️ Beanies might want to not look up that title if you don’t want potential spoilers, too.

Also, how many dramas can Yoona star in at once?

Yoona is the most in demand actress at the moment. She’s got 2 dramas and 3 movies lined up. The only ones to rival her is Suzy with 2 dramas and a movie and IU with 2 movies and a drama. Even KTR doesn’t have that many projects on her plate. It’s impressive how far Yoona, Suzy and IU have come from being mediocre to bad idol turned actresses to top stars and chungmro rising stars.

I think, it is. Youn Yuh-Jung, a North Korean who ran away and was separated from her family is playing the grandmother, Ha Ji-Won the granddauther, Kang Ha-Neul the ffake granddson.

Jung Hae-In will act as a CEO, I think.

Crying, screaming, throwing up @ Money Heist! Feel like the Korean version has potential to outclass the original (which got dragged down by the unnecessary multiple seasons).

1. Still slightly terrified of the animated cells, but I’m glad to see the show is back!

2. Jinyoung and Noh Jung-eui is a pretty pairing. I would’ve never thought of it, but I can see they’d look good together. Let’s hope the chemistry matches up.

3. Did it have to be on Disney+? What is it with shows with great casting going to Disney+? It’s like these people want me to pirate and illegally watch their content. Because there’s no way I’m missing a show with Jung Hae-in, Go Kyung-pyo, and THE Kim Hye-joon (my love ❤️).

4. I still don’t get the main pairing, sorry. And how long will Kwak Dong-yeon keep playing these secondary characters? He’s too good for this!

5. More Eom Ki-joon in non-Penthouse things is always welcome.

6. Great cast, questionable PD.

7. Sorry to these wonderfully talented ladies, but even the thought of My Liberation Notes ending makes my body break out in hives.

8. I mean, I didn’t necessarily have issues with the PD’s work on Red Sleeve Cuff, but I instinctively side-eye all the people in charge for the mess that was the second half of that drama.

9. This has the potential to be huge. And really good, if only they can restrain themselves from multiple meandering seasons. That’s what killed the original in the end.

There really is no other romcom in the upcoming months other than Yumi's Cells. Even Link with Yeo Jin Goo and Moon Ga Young has a murder mystery involved. Sigh. At least Yumi's cells is great and I'm sure season 2 will be too. Learn from Business Proposal dramaland, we need funny and heartwarming rom coms.

After Penthouses concluding finale episodes ending I'm having two minds about Escape of the 7. Uhm Ki-joon has to more compelling and less of whatever PentHouse turn him out to be. And I'm really happy Shin Eun-Kyung is in this one - one of the good things I remember about Penthouse 🙄. Thanks Writer-PDnim for casting her in.

It's nice to have Ha Ji-won back on screen.
Veteran casting for Wide Boar Hunting, I'm definitely watching this one.

Yumi Cell 2 please come quickly

Will watch anything with Jung Hae In. I would check out the LJS drama, but Yoo-nah bores me to tears, however I will give her newest drama a chance to change my mind before I completely write her off. Will try money heist as well, dropped the original after the first episode.

It is a tragedy that Lee Jong-suk’s post-military comeback drama has to be with someone I cannot tolerate as an actress.

I read that Shin Ye-eun (Meow, the Secret Boy) has also landed a role in Yumi's Cells 2, I think as a cafe worker or something. Shin has become something of a pinch-hitter for lower budget web series, gives off polished 'K-drama star' vibes without (I assume) the K-drama star price tag. She deserves more recognition.
