News bites: October 22, 2022

  • New character posters have dropped for KBS’s Curtain Call, featuring our two leads: Kang Haneul (Insider) and Ha Ji-won (Chocolate). With the premiere coming up on October 31, the production also announced the special guest appearances that we can look forward to, including a doctor Ahn Nae-sang (Red Heart) and Lee Yi-kyung (Critical X) as Kang’s bestie. We’ll also see flight attendant Jung Yoo-jin (Remarriage & Desires) as well as Kim Young-min (Military Prosecutor Doberman) as Granny Go Du-shim’s (Our Blues) long-lost son. • A cute first poster has come out for MBC’s Please Send a Fan Letter, showcasing our OTP Sooyoung (If You Wish Upon Me) and Yoon Park (Forecasting Love and Weather) along with child actor Shin Yeon-woo. Premiering next month on November 26, the mini rom-com’s 4 episodes will be airing once a week on Saturdays. [MBC]

  • Over on JTBC, Oh Dong-min (The Law Cafe) has been added to the cast of Understanding of Love, playing a co-worker of Yoo Yeon-seok (Narco-Saints). Also starring Moon Ga-young (Link: Eat, Love, Kill), the romance is slated to air towards the end of 2022 with PD Jo Young-min (Do You Like Brahms) at the helm and scripts by Lee Seo-hyun and Lee Hyun-jung. [Osen]
  • In the meantime, the promos continue for JTBC’s Reborn Rich and the Lee Sung-min (Juvenile Justice) cut (dare I say, the best one?) of the first teaser has now been released and I expect the Shin Hyun-bin (Monstrous) version will be made available soon as well. With Song Joong-ki (Vincenzo) rounding out the main trio, the fantasy-melodrama will be launching next month on November 18. [YTN]
  • We actually got double the Lee Sung-min this week with Disney+ releasing another video teaser for Shadow Detective. Premiering this coming week on October 26, the crime-action also stars Jin Gu (Superior Day), Kyung Su-jin (Mouse), and Lee Hak-joo (Artificial City). [Star News]

  • Speaking of Disney+, new stills have come out for their upcoming Revenge of Others, which stars Shin Ye-eun (Yumi’s Cells 2), Park Solomon (All of Us Are Dead), and Seo Ji-hoon (Seasons of Blossoms) in addition to Jung Soo-bin (Juvenile Justice), Chae Sang-woo (Money Flower), and Lee Soo-min (Pumpkin Time). The mystery-thriller will be coming to our screens on November 9. [JTBC]
  • New stills have dropped for MBC’s The Forbidden Marriage as well, giving us our first look at our young con-artist Park Joo-hyun (Love All Play). Also starring Kim Young-dae (Shooting Stars) and Kim Woo-seok (Military Prosecutor Doberman), the sageuk rom-com will be broadcasting on December 9 in the Friday-Saturday slot.[MBC]

Please send a fan letter really does look cute, Understanding of love and The forbidden marriage are potentials for the watchlist too. I am hopeful that amongst them will be at least one that I can enjoy watching all the way through.

A lot of the recent watches that are enjoyable have had elements that overshadow the parts that made me sign up for the show in the first place. It’s usually a plot line that could easily have been excluded as it is not relevant to the main story or the issues it raises could have been done in a different way that fitted the tone of the main story. Today’s webtoon it was the attempt to close down the team, Love is for suckers, it’s the reality tv show, Once upon a small town, the bickering Ajummas town rivalry. The worst offender was the gang violence in If you wish upon me.

Here’s to a batch of straightforward dramas that stay in their lane.

Looking forward to FORBIDDEN MARRIAGE and FAN LETTER. I will not miss not being able to see the Disney+ shows. I am sure that there is an audience for them- just not one that would have included me.
