Song Hye-gyo hashes revenge, reveling in The Glory darkness

A new poster and video teaser came out this week for Netflix’s eerie revenge drama The Glory, giving us our first look at the main lineup: Song Hye-gyo (Now, We Are Breaking Up), Lee Do-hyun (Melancholia), and Im Ji-yeon (Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area) in addition to Yeom Hye-ran (The Uncanny Counter), Park Sung-hoon (Memorials), and Jung Sung-il (Our Blues).

Deeply traumatized by the violence she experienced in high school, our wronged heroine Moon Dong-eun (Song Hye-gyo) has been carefully playing the long game to take her revenge – targeting both the perpetrators as well as the bystanders who turned a blind eye.

Supporting her, though, is the mysterious plastic surgeon Joo Yeo-jung (Lee Do-hyun), who recognizes that Dong-eun doesn’t need a knight in shining armor. But he can offer to be her knife-wielding executioner. Another ally who extends her hand is Kang Hyun-nam (Yeom Hye-ran). As a victim of family abuse, Hyun-nam needed to protect her child and took grave measures to stop the violence, once and for all.

In high school, Dong-eun’s torment was led by Park Yeon-jin (Im Ji-yeon) and Jeon Jae-joon (Park Sung-hoon). But while Jae-joon is still the rich wild child who does whatever he pleases, Yeon-jin is now in the public eye as a famous influencer and risks losing everything if the truth is revealed. The danger extends to Yeon-jin’s husband as well – CEO Ha Do-young (Jung Sung-il) – and, if all goes to plan, he could be the one to open Pandora’s box and unleash Dong-eun’s hell upon their family.

The teaser begins with Dong-eun explaining how she feels as we see snippets from her violent past. We then briefly cut to Yeo-jung examining a knife before returning to Dong-eun, who wonders what could have happened differently if someone or something had helped her.

Adding to the frustration, one person from her high school doesn’t even remember her. Dong-geun thus tells her that she’s going to hell. Hyun-nam calls her crazy but still negotiates an alliance. All the while, Yeon-jin throws a tantrum before warning her husband to not open boxes.

In the sequence, we get a few glimpses of a robe-clad Jae-joon as well before the teaser comes to a close on our heroine. She claps in appreciation and then faces the camera to reveal her bitter resolve.

With scripts by the Kim Eun-sook (The King: Eternal Monarch, Mr. Sunshine) and PD Ahn Gil-ho (Happiness, Watcher) as the talent behind the camera, Netflix’s The Glory releases this month on December 30.

This will either be stinking awful or just garden variety awful.

This looks really unengaging but I'm sure it'll strike big in netflix. My heart weeps for Lee Do-hyun and Park Sung-hoon, who are the sole reasons I would consider pressing play.

When I say that single shot of Park Sung-hoon had me more invested than the entirety of the teaser...

I think now is a good time to confess that I was never impressed by Song Hye-Kyo's acting, but I enjoyed the teaser and am looking forward to what's coming next.

I saw the trailer and it looks . . . bad.

Ok i'm just judging the trailer, but here's my pre-assumptions :

1) SHK's acting, judged by tiny bits seen in these cuts look unconvincing .... ok she really tried that "psycho grin" look and should get some points for trying but TBH it does not worked. Sadly she ended up with that wooden "usual" facial expressions just like 95% of her other drama ...
2) LDH is confirmed as her "prince" which will do anything to protect her which I read as just another variation of the "knight in shining armor" type of character that you usually find in Kim Eun Seok script, just with a darker or psychotic twist .... blah!

(I will ended up checking it anyway ...)

I'm surprised at the negative reaction here. I thought the trailer looked unhinged, in a good way, and Song Hyekyo is showing more facial movement in it than the last decade of her career.

If the reviews are good, I may binge this because I love psycho characters. Netflix has stacked their December broadcast lineup.

Same, I was actually impressed with the trailer. I felt like SHK did a good job in what feels like an out of the norm character for her.

Agreed. It might be too dark for my tastes, but I thought it was a well-made trailer and SHK looked decent to me. I certainly see why she took this role--it's a huge departure from her usual characters, and probably more demanding than anything she's ever done.

Song Hye-gyo’s acting really hasn’t improved… at all. Her expressions are still wooden, so it looks like they’re prioritizing visuals and aesthetics over acting craftsmanship, which does not bode well. Add in the fact that the script already comes off as disastrously messy and any interest I might’ve had evaporates quicker than water.

Sorry to Lee Do-hyun, Park Sung-hoon, and Yeom Hye-ran (all actors I like who might have career-defining performances here), but I’m not sitting through a mediocre makjang by one of my least favourite screenwriters and headlined by an unimpressive actress. Even for them.

I actually liked the trailer and am excited for the drama.
Song Hye Gyo looks gorgeous and intimidating. Plus, bad people getting their life destroyed is my favourite kdrama genre.

If this drama is drop in one go, I'll might give it a chance to catch it up.
Otherwise, don't bother to play it. I can't even remember what's her last drama that leave much impression other than...NONE 😵‍💫😑

So sick of seeing and hearing about school bullies and quite frankly anyone who spends the rest of their life obsessing about them in a drama is unhinged. Just the subject itself has me shoving my fingers down my throat to purge it from my system. I'll happily read the comments about this show but there wIll have to be more than the usual school bully, child kidnap trauma, abandonment by mother, etc etc etc we are served up time and time again. Are there no normal families in Korea? It really doesn't seem so.

The female lead style reminds me of the teacher in my favorite j-movie, "Confession" and I really hope this one could make it. I'm not a fan of the writer but I'm gonna binge it for LDH. Pls be good!
