You can only pick one Song Joong-ki drama

missvictrix: Oh, I’m definitely picking Nice Guy. This show is just K-drama revenge melo at its best — from the Very Melodramatic OST, to the ups and downs of the plot, to the pining, the fury, and the many reversals. For some reason the first image of this drama that pops up in my head is always Song Joong-ki when he’s all beaten up with a huuuuge swollen eye standing in the rain being a not-so-nice guy. That’s basically the drama in a nutshell. (Do they make them like this anymore? I don’t think so.)

quirkycase: To make this easier on myself, I’m only counting dramas where Song Joong-ki is in at least half the episodes (which knocks out Tree with Deep Roots). So I’m going to ultimately go with Nice Guy. Some revenge dramas can take themselves too seriously and zap all the fun out of the proceedings, but not Nice Guy. It’s just the perfect soapy, revenge drama. I had a blast watching Song Joong-ki and Moon Chae-won’s melodramatic saga that went all in on the tropes. Because sometimes, all you want is a tortured, morally questionable hero full of angst, schemes, and secrets.

mistyisles: I want to say Sungkyunkwan Scandal, because that’s where I first fell in love with him, and Gu Yong-ha will always be absolutely iconic. But I’d either have to re-cast the male lead or do some serious mental gymnastics to separate that actor from the character if I were to try watching it again. Still, if I look at it from the standpoint of my favorite Song Joong-ki role, that’s definitely the one!

DaebakGrits: I try not to think too hard about Vincenzo (the drama) because it glorifies a lot of things that probably shouldn’t be romanticized (e.g. the mafia), but I loved Song Joong-ki’s Vincenzo — even if his violence-filled past is glossed over to soften his character for the bulk of the drama’s story. But, as I’ve mentioned before, I’m an absolute sucker for fictional men who kick butt in a tailored suit, and Song Joong-ki did a great job straddling the line between being suavely dangerous and humorous. Admittedly, the comedy was largely due to the supporting cast, who emphasized his fish-out-of-water circumstances and provided a lot of situational humor, but Joong-ki never lost his edge — not even when he dressed up as a shaman or wore matching headbands on his date with Kim Sung-cheol’s character.

solstices: Song Joong-ki has had plenty of memorable roles, ranging from werewolf boy to mafia consigliere, but I’d have to go with Sungkyunkwan Scandal. He was easily one of the best parts of the show, especially his amusing dynamic and bromantic banter with Yoo Ah-in’s Geol-oh. It’s a shame that the drama has since been marred by the male lead, since Song Joong-ki’s portrayal still stands the test of time. His take on Gu Yong-ha reminded me of why I liked Kim Ji-seok so much in The Slave Hunters — and since that show is tinged with nostalgia as one of my gateway K-dramas, it made me appreciate the character of Gu Yong-ha even more. I loved how he was carefree, yet thoughtful; he may have been lackadaisical, but he was reliable when it counted. Song Joong-ki did a great job of bringing across that depth, and it solidified my appreciation of him as an actor.

alathe: Descended From the Sun! Cards on the table — it’s been a long time since I’ve seen this one. However, the fact that I can still think of it and grin about four years on probably speaks for itself. Song Joong-ki is at his most soulful and superb here. I love the sheer, smirky competence he brings to the role: that man is made of charisma. All the same, there’s something so broken-open and layered about his performance in the romantic scenes. And god, the chemistry. Who can forget that spectacular kiss in the pickup truck? (Possibly one of the best K-drama kisses… maybe ever?) Or that moment he bends to tie her shoe? (Also one of the best shoelace-fixing moments ever??) Our heroine watching the soldiers do their morning workout and shamelessly drooling? (Also one of the best — actually, nope, that one’s pretty unique.) Anyway, I could list about a thousand beautiful, flat-out iconic moments, but it all comes down to the fact that this drama — despite its issues, and despite being far from my type of show on paper — is immensely satisfying to watch. I could watch Song Joong-ki all day in this… and, if I recall the details of my light-speed binge-watch correctly, almost certainly did.

This had me remniscing on the first drama I've seen him in. Remember Obstetrics and Gynecology Doctors from 2010? I looked it up and it actually came out in the same year as Sungkyunkwan Scandal which was his breakout role and my favourite of his. Rewatching SkkS is impossible, but OGD was great as well and unproblematic still. With Nice Guy he showed bigger range and it helped solidify his stardom.

I’m gonna cheat and pick my favorite SJK movie role - Soo Chul in A Werewolf Boy duh! No one can give a good “Gajima” like him 😤. It was also a great introduction to Korean movies plus Park Bo Young!
I don’t really have a favorite drama of his. I guess the one I enjoyed the most was Vincenzo. Like most people. Kicking butt and taking names, all in a designer suit? Very sexy, very crush-worthy, very dynamic. I’m sure his role in SS would be my favorite if I actually went past half the first episode. I still think about SJK with his fan and smirk from time to time. Very iconic. (I can’t remember who the male lead is so I’m not sure what happened there 🥴)

"The sheer, smirky competence" of SKJ in DOTS: yes, exactly! So much fun to watch!

His range and his charm kept me watching Vincenzo long after the plot had left me by the side of the road (couldn't get me to the end, though.)

But I have to vote for Sungkynkwan Scandal: the gravitas he brought a role that could have been played just for laughs—he made that whole show.

(He's keeping me glued to Reborn Rich, too: he and Lee Sung Min just smoulder!)

Oh, and you know what? He was pretty good in that forgettable sci fi movie (the name of which I can't remember!)

I have watched all of his dramas before his DOTS fame and he really is a good actor in all of the drama's he had acted.

I loved him in mostly in both Innocent Man and Vincenzo, but my Vincenzo bias is a bit higher, so yes hands down VINCENZO CASSANO! Love an anti-hero in a suit taking down the villain's like they deserved! I think this drama really brought his acting game even more further and this one will be really really special to him,

I first saw him in Triple, the figure-skating drama where he had a minor role. Then I next saw him in Sungkyunkwan Scandal where he was a scene-stealer. But I'd say I fell in love with him in The Innocent Man. It was my first everything-in-it drama -- first love, murder, revenge, amnesia, and other classic tropes. DOTS had more heavyweights in the cast and was more polished, but it didn't quite excite me as The Innocent Man.

Really glad to see some Tree with Deep Roots love here. It was really a fantastic performance, sad that it was too short though Han Suk Kyu did well as the older version. It is still my most favorite for him, and part of the reason I really liked him (he chose to challenge himself with this role even though he could have done easy with romcom lead offers given he was already popular with Sungkyunkwan Scandal at that time). I really wish to see Song Joong Ki in sageuk again, really saddened he didn’t finish Arthdal Chronicles. My next wish is he plays King Sejong in a drama or movie about him. And hopefully they dont split it to seasons, so SJK can play the role til the end.

Nice Guy : I liked the panache of Vincenzo, the righteousness of SiJin (DotS), the ironic sincerity of YeoRim (Sungkyunkwan Scandal), the guilt of TaeHo (Space sweepers), the savagery of ChulSu (Werewolf boy), the tender friendship of PoongHo (Triple), ... but more than anything KANG MaRu (Nice guy) is my favorite character because of his complexity and deep suffering.
Over the years and roles, Song Joong Ki's acting continues to improve and internalize. He can play anything! I like !

Hmmm... Much as I love Vincenzo Cassano 😁, I have to go with one of my favorite male characters of all time. It's Yoo Shi Jin from Descendants of the Sun.

Honestly, if I was to date a guy from dramaland, he will be in the Top Two. I mean, he's straightforward, merciful, loyal, feels his feelings, is very expressive and humorous, is protective and sometimes impulsive, is loved by parents and has a dangerous job that he loves.

Name three male characters that best him in personality. I'll wait

I understand your idea: Yoo SiJin is the ideal man (strong and kind, intelligent, funny, faithful and loyal, ... and handsome, etc.) that everyone would like to meet, but who does not exist as Song Joong KI says in episode 19 (special episode BTS part 3). Of course, I'm impressed too!

But my choice fell on NICE GUY because of the complexity and the feelings expressed, which gave the actors more variety of acting (even if for my taste this drama is less well filmed than DotS). Song Joong Ki plays with finesse a man lost between his desire to do well for everyone (sister, girlfriend, boyfriend) and the cynical life he's been dragged into. I admit I was surprised by such a serene end, even if I don't regret finding peace.

By making this choice, it is the work of the actor that I salute, more than the sympathy inspired by the character.
