Bora! Deborah: Episodes 11-12

For our penultimate week, it’s time to resolve things with the exes (for good, I hope). And as for our OTP, well, it’s another week of teasing us with a romance which the show has refused to commit to.

EPISODES 11-12

Yoon Hyun-min and Yoo Inna in Bora! Deborah: Episodes 11-12

Weddings and a spillover of last week’s return of the exes are interwoven this week. But at least, we are now at the resolution side of things starting with Soo-hyuk and Yu-ri. Yu-ri has mixed feelings about her upcoming wedding, and she tells Soo-hyuk that she regrets their breakup. *Rolls eyes* She suggests that she wants to get back together, but Soo-hyuk shuts down the idea. He admits that loved Yu-ri a lot and explains that he didn’t officially ask her to be his girlfriend because he believed she already was. *Rolls eyes again*

Yu-ri is shocked to learn that Soo-hyuk was going to propose on the day they broke up. And perhaps the shock gets to her head because rather than take responsibility for bringing up the breakup, she blames it all on Deborah’s advice (like Soo-hyuk once did). Tsk. But Soo-hyuk clears the air again. Breakup or not, he would have gone ahead and proposed if he wanted to, but he didn’t because that was how far his feelings for her went. Okay, sir. I believe you.

The good news is that for the first time in forever, Soo-hyuk is being honest with his feelings, and as he tells Yu-ri, he plans to keep doing that going forward. After getting their closure, Soo-hyuk’s final act of goodwill towards Yu-ri is to attend her wedding with Bora as his “girlfriend,” having previously introduced himself to Yu-ri’s fiancé as a sunbae from her school. And with this, the groom can sleep well at night without worrying about the relationship between Soo-hyuk and his bride. Heh.

Sang-jin and Soo-jin are also guests at Yu-ri’s wedding, and this gives them the much needed opportunity to reflect on the death of their marriage. Sang-jin admits that he was in over his head when setting up his publishing company, and he was ashamed to share the burden of his failures and many debts with his wife, so he thought letting her go was the best solution. But marriage should be for better, for worse and a spouse isn’t just there to share the good times. In hindsight, Sang-jin apologizes for being a coward, and Soo-jin also apologizes for not understanding him.

Things might not have worked out well between Sang-jin and Soo-jin, but as Soo-jin hopes, it might be different when they meet other people. That being said, it’s finally closure for another set of exes like Soo-hyuk with Yu-ri earlier on, and Bora with Ju-wan two weeks ago — or so I thought, because Ju-wan is the roach that just won’t die.

A relentless Ju-wan blows up Bora’s phone with a million texts, and I wonder why she can’t just block him already. Why is she still entertaining him? Heck, why does the show waste precious screen time on this guy when we could have used those minutes to dive into the OTP’s romance instead? And then that jealous gaslighting chicken has the nerve to be “worried” about Bora’s reputation among their friends because she’s hanging out with a new guy (Soo-hyuk) so soon after their breakup. Tsk. If you’re so worried and you don’t want her to get hurt, then delete her freaking number!!

Chansung and Yoo Inna in Bora! Deborah: Episodes 11-12

Unfortunately, having mutual friends means that Bora and Ju-wan can’t always avoid face-to-face interactions, which is why they run into each other at their friends’ pre-wedding photoshoot. Proving that drama is in a love triangle with every couple on this show, the bride and groom throw a tantrum mid-shoot, and the bride storms off. Like Jin-woo and Yoo-jung, this couple is getting married because the bride insisted, and I think the entire friendship squad needs to burn sage or something because they’re giving bad energy vibes.

Luckily (or not, because I still think they need therapy), the groom apologizes to his bride and promises to try to be better because he loves her. And in that moment, all Bora can think about is Ju-wan’s words that “trying is not love.” But Ju-wan is wrong. Because, well, he’s always wrong. Period! And it gave me immense pleasure to see how jealous he was of Soo-hyuk’s presence at the shoot.

Soo-hyuk is a natural, and he really went all out to sell his and Bora’s “love story” to her friends — from his swoony entrance, to saying and doing all the right things. He even comes up with a backstory of how he and Bora met at a wedding and fell in love. And whoa! The Oscar for method acting of the year goes to Lee Soo-hyuk! Let’s hear the acceptance speech, shall we? Heh.

Method acting or not, it’s clear that Soo-hyuk and Bora are smitten with each other. They’re having more heartfelt conversations with each other, and I liked their almost kiss at the cinema more than the actual karaoke kiss. Now if they could just be officially paired together so we can all move on. But seriously, what is the show still waiting for? Bora already had an impromptu meet and greet with Soo-hyuk’s parents — who are such a lovely and affectionate couple — and it made me wonder where Soo-hyuk learned his closed-off ways from.

But within minutes, we learn that his parents got divorced when he was six, and the lovely couple Bora met are his mom and stepdad. Soo-hyuk learned about the ugly side of romance first after witnessing his parent’s divorce at such a tender age, and that’s why he grew up to be so guarded and finds it difficult to express his feelings. This explains a lot, and I wish this reveal could have been done much earlier because I would have been able to empathize with him better.

As the week winds to a close, we get an update on Bora’s career. With everything that has happened, Bora decides to change the end of her book from a definite getting back together with the ex to something more open ended that indicates growth and a new beginning. And really, good for her, because imagine going through all that healing process just to end up with Ju-wan. Ew!

As for her radio show, Bora is still not confident about returning on air because she’s worried that Deborah’s audience will not like the real Bora. But Soo-hyuk encourages her to give the audience a chance, and who knows? They might like Bora better than Deborah. After all, he likes Bora better. Smooth! Now it’s Bora’s turn to be seduced by Soo-hyuk’s charms. Lol.

Later on as Bora backs up the pretty pictures she took at Yu-ri’s wedding to her wedding pictures folder, one of the older pictures in the folder catches her eye. It’s an elevator selfie, and there’s a familiar face in the background. It’s Soo-hyuk! And via a flashback, we see that Soo-hyuk’s “how we met” backstory to her friends was actually true. Somebody, pinch me!

Yoon Hyun-min and Yoo Inna in Bora! Deborah: Episodes 11-12 Yoon Hyun-min and Yoo Inna in Bora! Deborah: Episodes 11-12

This show did not just pull out the tired “we met in the past” trope on me! LMAO — not the drama trying to snatch the “destined couple” crown from Jin-ho and Bomi. But in retrospect, it was kinda set up in the first week when we learned that Bora accompanied Yoo-jung to Sang-jin’s wedding. As Sang-jin’s close friend, it goes without saying that Soo-hyuk would also have been in attendance, and it’s not far-fetched that he ran into Bora at the event. Still, I’m not buying this pay off.

If Soo-hyuk could clearly remember — and romanticize — their brief encounter from four years ago, how come he acted like he was meeting Bora for the first time in Week 1? Or maybe I’m just overthinking things. Either way, I cannot wait for the drama to answer all my questions as it ends next week.

Will Bora and Soo-hyuk become a couple, or will the drama leave things open-ended like Bora’s book? Will Woo-ri come to terms with the fact that Sang-jin doesn’t see her as more than an employee? And finally, will Yoo-jung dump Jin-woo? Ha! Who am I kidding? I gave up on their separation when Yoo-jung folded and went to sleep in Jin-woo’s arms after he fell asleep while she was airing her sentiments with him. If Yoo-jung is fine with the status quo, why should I bother getting riled up over the dysfunctional arrangement they call a marriage?

The last two episodes were exactly what I had hoped for from this series. I could easily watch at least two more episodes of Bora and Soo-hyuk circling each other and flirting, and I would have gladly given up a few episodes of heartbreak and drinking for that.

If Soo-hyuk looked at me the way he does Bora, I'd be putty in his hands and he could ask anything of me.
And I love the way the two of them talk to each other. They already know more about each other than their two former partners.

My highlights of the week: Bora's method acting and the bridal bouquet throwing.

It’s been ages since I saw leads in any drama spending this much time together and speaking this honestly to each other. It was refreshing and so sweet to watch Bora and SuHyeok being honest and simply comfortable and happy with the other. I don’t know if the final week will make this couple official, but whether they decide to get together or just be good friends (which is also getting together), I’ll be fine as I have seen both characters growing.

Talking about growth, I was pleasantly surprised by SangJin this week. He decided to be honest with both SooJin and URi, and for once I saw his character not as a clueless guy who just lets life go by, to a man who knows what he wants (at least once). As someone who has been in the situation in which my kindness was confused with “something else” I appreciated his honesty with URi.

As for our disfunctional couple, I was also shocked when after her honest talk about how she del the in her marriage YooJung decided to cuddle with her “husband”. Those two have decided they love each other even if they don’t, at least in a romantic way. The way he plays jokes on every attempt she has to make a movement on him is so annoying. If they finally don’t get a divorce or go to therapy, I hope they are unhappy ever after.

I’m actually OK with where Bo-ra and Soo-hyuk are at the end of these episodes - pretending to others that they’re dating while pretending to each other that they’re not. I like the suspense of them NOT getting into a formal relationship yet, because the flirting and the hesitant confidences are so delicious.

Chansung is at his best as a smarmy prick. Bridezilla and her beleaguered groom are entertaining even if they are just a cautionary tale. Yu-ri can make her teary-eyed, manipulative way into the sunset. Sang-jin does seem to be the poster child for "failing to read the room," but is he finally growing a spine? And putting it to use with uber-creepy Woo-ri? I've started to find her funny now that I understand she's completely convinced she's the heroine in a classic literary romance when everyone else knows she's a minor character in an office comedy.

There's still time for a crisis or misunderstanding or two, but please, show, no reunions with crappy exes, noble idiocy, or forced separations. Another gym scene would be welcome, though, and there's still that ring hanging around waiting for its moment to shine.

I love your description of U-to 😂😂
Honestly, I found her a bit annoying specially after SangJin was being so kind to her, and yet she said he must have let her say her confession, when honestly, listening to an unwanted confession is very unpleasant.

Sometime later, Run On did the same, Siwan's character tell his father that his imposed love is also violence.

SH ran into BR at the jewelry store when he bought it, and he knew it was her Precious favorite and apparently chose it out of spite, and now we know he was already smitten with her then from their encounter 4 years ago. It doesn't make sense that he didn't recognize her at that meeting (OK, lots of things don't make sense), but I'm betting on a scene that will somehow back-engineer the ring really being for her and rationalize him giving it to her.

I've been re-watching episodes 1 and 2 - there are a whole lot of little scenes With Soo-hyuk showing his curiosity about Deborah - the Dating Coach. and possibly even wondering if she is the same woman he met years ago.

He did NOT recognize her in the jewelry store as Deborah. He barely looked at her during that whole encounter. When she walked into the office the next day, he looks down at the books w/the wide variety of cover photos and then flashbacks to the jewelry store and realizes the encounter was with Deborah - the Dating Coach.

It's still not clear to me when he realized she was the woman who "took his breath away". I think it may have been when he was in the cafe, waiting for Yu-ri - he looks out the window and there's "the woman from the jewelry store" - pantomiming that he is holding HER ring - looking directly eye to eye - and he is shocked/stunned.

I really hope the drama does clears up that one little thing - when did he realize that she was the woman from his past and did that impact all of the little heroics - AND his major resistance - to her.

Bora and Su Hyeok continue to delight me. Their flirtatious chit chats, method acting flirting, their deep conversations, them working out together, Su Hyeok pulling every stop to spend all his free time with her are just great moments.
I wonder when Su Hyeok will ask her to be his girlfriend. Will it be different this time around? Don’t go around assuming she is your girlfriend. The seduction has gone on for too long. We are all seduced by the couple. So get them together show!! NOW!

I don’t care much for the married couple or BoMi couple.

Sang Jin backstory came a bit too late. I wish we knew this awhile back.

In past dramas I've seen so many commenters says when the couple finally gets together their interest in them drops to zero. Because who cares about normal happy couples? So from a show-perspective I can see why they're delaying it. I foresee a lover's quarrel in the next two episodes just because the story needs a little conflict-and-resolution.

I really liked the conversations between our leads in Ep. 12. I like that the writers don't feel the need to make everything explicit. Like Yu-jeong and Bo-ra figuring out who Jin-ho is dating. Or when Soo-hyeok invited Bo-ra to his house then recanted it, we are able to realise that it's because he's been lying to her about where he lives for months 😅.

In one of the earliest episodes, he offered to drop her home when she was drunk and so that she wouldn't think he was pitying her, he told her he lived in the same neighbourhood. Some time later she asked him to take the same bus home with her because (she thinks) they live close together and he couldn't really tell her he doesn't. Since then he's basically been using the same neighbourhood excuse to drop her home/pick her up lol.

I loved our main couple this week. Positive, sharing, happy. I was only dissapointed with how they met earlier story! It was totally unnecessary. So he liked her, he could have found easily who she is but continue to his life with Yuri. We have 4 coupels in the drama but 2 of them are in uncommunicative relationship. I don't think marriage is the blame. It is up to you who you want to settle! And feel comfortable with!

I found it sortof cool, sortof hard to believe. I also saw my husband at a party months before we actually met, and when we did meet I immediately remembered where I had seen him before ( not because he caused a scene or anything, I just remembered his smile). I don't know why they both forgot this first encounter, or if he remembered all along then why he pretended not to know her. Unless, maybe, he didn't want to be seen as some kind of fanboy/stalker.

I am hopeful that they are not going with the "love at first sight" trope. She may have taken his breath away for a moment, but he easily could have pursued her if it was "love".

It's not clear that he was dating Yu-ri at the time. Sang-jin and Soo-jin were married for several years and divorced several years ago.

I wonder if her book cover was so photoshopped and filtered that he didn't recognize her. Same with magazine covers. He didn't care for her and her dating advice back then so he didn't look her up.

I do hope we get to see that *click* moment when he realized she was the ONE from their past encounter. Maybe when she was trying on black dresses and that triggered the memory?

I really liked the scenes between Bora and Soo-Hyuk. It's nice to see 2 adults being able to communicate and flirting at the same time.

I loved how she was wearing his sneakers and his coat at the end, she looked so tiny.

I liked the fact they met in the past. I don't think it's weird that Soo-Hyuk didn't connect this event with Bora right away but maybe after seeing the people around them were connected.

For the rest, I was happy to see Sang-Jin handling the misunderstandings in his life and stopping at being a coward.

For the rest, I don't really care about the young couple that never should have dated in the first place, and Yoo-jung married to a teenager who refused to grow up.

To be fair, most of his over-the-top behavior was other mischievous people egging on his natural enthusiasm.

4

I agree, his love confession is weird, but stranger things have happened and the show worked really hard to make him come off as naive, and I think they pulled it off. That is why it doesn't bother me, but I do understand why it can be seen as a lot. 😊

These episodes showed the drama I signed up for day one. It's unusual for a second half of a drama to be better than the first, but that's what we seem to be getting with this one. @Unit, Ju Wan, as the roach that won't die, is the most succinct description I've seen in a long time! Thank you!
Several hilarious scenes in this one, my favourites being the pre wedding photo shoot degenerating into a brawl, and the other one a cute Jin Ho mop dancing after his night with Bo Mi.
I'm leaving Soo Hyuks smouldering glances till last, my word! 🫣 (Fanning myself as I type). I love their relationship, but I'm looking for serious payoff for making me wait so long for a second kiss. I, for one, will not be happy with an open ending for this pair!

I like him too since the beginning. I think he sealed the deal when he remained tight-lipped even though he was the witness of the cheating/break up scene of Bora and her boyfriend. Let's admit it, it will be a juicy gossip and it's not like she is his close friend for him to protect her privacy and integrity. If a person can keep a stranger's embarrassing moments to himself, then I have to admit that he is a really decent person.

"remained tight-lipped"

Even more remarkable since at that point, he already disliked her (from the jewelry store scene) and then after meeting her int he office, blamed her for his break-up with Yu-ri.

However, at this point, he may also have realized that she was the woman who "took his breath away" a few years ago and although he was no longer "smitten", he wasn't going to destroy her.

The way it gave me the ICK.

They finally find themselves enjoying one another's companionship after all the "Mulder and Scully" explanation in Ep9 and I see already some sparkling feelings growing for one another. Su yeok finally has the courage to say what he truly feels and was able to find closure with Yu-ri. I know Bora is taking cautious steps in opening her heart again but for all we know she is in a denial stage that she is falling in love with her "catfish". It's also nice that she was able to meet Su yeok's parents too! I can't wait for the last 2 episodes to reveal what their true relationship is because I guess both of them keep on saying that they're like Mulder and Scully but deep down inside, they're more than that :)

2

@isagc Their movie roles are, as you say, unhappy/tragic ending relationships, but they've both spoken about being longtime good friends in real life. Maybe the comparison SH is making here is with their fictional vs. real-life relationships - like him and BR pretending to date when they're "on stage" with their friend group while being just friends (ha!) behind the scenes. But TV Mulder and Scully end up together, while real-life Winslet and DiCaprio haven't, so the show is still leaving it open which way these two will go.

Or I'm overthinking things again!

I never watched x-files, although at some point I knew that Scully and Mulder became a couple, so did some browsing last night.

The Director said that the Number One description of the couple is TRUST. In fact, he stated early on that there was no way they were going to become a couple - he hated the idea.

I like the similarity - Soo Hyuk is trying to build trust with Bo-ra and that's why he regretted the kiss and why he's not going to blurt it all out until he feels she's ready to deal with his love.

But now - she's found that photo. He kept telling her the story was true and wanted her to trust him. What now, Bo-ra??

Finally, I loved both an odd and an even numbered episode!

This show is finally getting to the good stuff, and I concede that part of what makes it so good is that it feels truly earned. The leads have been through a LOT together in the past few months, and their knowledge of themselves and each other is ultimately what's allowing them to finally have a relationship that works for them both. As @elinor said below, I don't mind at all that these two are pretending about what's going on between them; it makes perfect sense that they want to hold onto the giddiness of first falling and then realizing you're in love without acknowledging it out loud. Plus, considering the relationships they just came out of, it's understandable that they're reveling in a bit of fantasy that's not really fantasy (because, of course, they are dating whether they say it or not).

I also loved Bo-ra in that conversation with Ju-wan. Her calm, collected demeanor, and the fact that she immediately knew what he was up to, was so cool. This is the confident, self-possessed, and kind woman she has been all along, but without the jaded, cynical edge that came with being Deborah. I can easily see why Soo-hyuk is in love with her (because he so obviously is).

Soo-hyuk's conversation with his ex was great, too. He said everything he needed to say, treated her with respect and kindness, and then went back to where he belonged.

I don't have much to say about the side stories right now, except I was very puzzled over the show trying to universalize Yoo-jung and Jin-woo's rapidly disappearing sex life as inevitable once one gets married. Either these two are no longer attracted to each other OR they got married because they wanted to be free to have sex with each other whenever they wanted (and that somehow wasn't the case when they were dating) but that's not enough on which to base a marriage. These are both personal, specific-to-them problems that have nothing to do with marriage as an institution. So the show should either tackle and resolve them as individual problems or move on already.

I am also really annoyed by this show's attempts to normalize Yoo-jung and Jin-woo's relationship. They toss out these statistics about sex after marriage (which frankly I find puzzling because it doesn't match my experience) as a way to justify their relationship as normal. Really? Frankly I like my mom's take on relationships a lot better. When we talked about some of the bizarre relationships we knew about - no marriage is the same as far as I can tell - she would shrug at the end and say, "well, it takes all kinds to make a marriage!" Meaning everyone needs to figure out what works for them.

After watching the show I looked it up. According to a Japanese statistic some 30% on marriages are sexless. In the US that number is a touch under 20%. The discrepancy between the two numbers may be in Americans' willingness to divorce if things are that bad.

A favorite old movie of mine is a 1981 American film named 'My Dinner With Andre'. The entire film is two people sitting at a restaurant having a conversation. This is what a like most about Bora!, two people casually having genuine conversations. Now that I think of it, this is my favorite part of most dramas, though we usually don't get enough. In 'Summer Strike' they kept interrupting the couple with 'plot'.

I've posted before that this show is self-aware. Stuff that viewers say they don't like about Bora, Bora herself lists as her faults. She is aware that she's vain and shallow and attention seeking.
