[K-drama Treasure Hunt] Lethal allergies

Welcome to the K-drama treasure hunt, where we all go looking for K-drama treasure in the form of tiny drama details that we know and love. Sometimes these details take the shape of well-worn tropes (oppa Band-Aiding) or storytelling devices (Top Secret Deadly Allergy), but other times it’s just details we know we’ve seen in other dramas, but need help putting all the clues together.

Each week we’ll put you on the hunt for a piece of K-drama treasure, and you can report your findings in the comments.

There’s no umpire in this game, so if you find the detail we’re looking for, drop the drama title (or even better, drama title + episode number) in the comments, and we’ll all take your word for it. Or, we’ll go binge watch just to see it play out.

This week’s treasure:

Lethal allergies.

Your mission:

Find and list as many characters as you can who have a potentially deadly allergy, noting what it is they’re allergic to. It could be a food (peaches anyone?) or something else (like Ryan’s allergy to caffeine in Her Private Life). But no matter what it is, chances are the people around them won’t know it exists until it’s almost too late.

Reference drama:

Her Private Life (Episode 2)

We know there is a lot of "treasure" worth discussing in dramaland, but please keep your comments geared around the topic at hand so the people who want to participate can easily grab their shovels and treasure map.

I am not a robot where Kim Min kyu gets those terrible rashes as allergic reaction to human touch.

It was strange because it wasn't a real allergy -- it was only psychological since Min-kyu had no problem touching Ji-ah when he believed that she was a robot.

Peanuts allergy is extremely common in kdramas. It and peaches must be close if not equal competition.

Peaches really are a thing aren't they? Ung is allergic to peaches in Our Beloved Summer, and so is his friend Ji-ung. Maybe it doesn't count as an allergy, but the oldest brother (original CP) in Our Blooming Youth died from eating a peach, but it was some kind of hyper-sensitivity because of other medication he was on. I know there was an instance in Crazy Love too, but I haven't seen it (just read weecaps).

Can Beanies think of other peach-allergic characters? I feel like there's another that I'm not thinking of...

I don’t remember there being a peach allergy in CRAZY LOVE but I could be wrong. The ML had trauma about onions tho but wasn’t necessarily allergic to them. Similarly with CRASH CROUSE IN ROMANCE the ML couldn’t eat anything that wasn’t from the FL banchan restaurant. Wow now that I think about it , those two dramas had a lot in common, including the dreaded killer plot.

I just looked back at the weecaps and it happens in ep 9 or 10, where Se-gi offers Go-jin a peach slice to test his (fake) amnesia, because Go-jin is deathly allergic to peaches.

It sounds so wild when I write it out like this hahaha!

Although it's not an allergy and not deadly, it can be socially deadly. I saw a reality dating challenge show on long gone AZN, in one episode the two competitors, one Asian and one Caucasian, had to each drink a jug of milk to impress the target of their affection. The Asian contestant had to quit mid-jug and make a sudden exit.

Required fields are marked *

As someone with lactose intolerance, I felt represented in Anthony’s plight! Also he was freaking hilarious! Lactose intolerance may not be deadly but it’s very common and I’m surprised I don’t see it depicted as much. I guess the latest example was in XO, Kitty?(Which could be considered a Kdrama?)

7

reply

Required fields are marked *

I think lactose intolerance is underrepresented in dramas precisely because it's not as deadly as other allergies, like what's the fun depicting something so non-dramatic?)))

7
3
reply

Required fields are marked *

True, but we’ve seen so many vomiting scenes in kdramas mostly from over drinking and I find toilet humour funny. From my own countless bad experiences too. It’s sometimes fun to chuckle at myself, especially at something so ordinary and it might not be deadly in the literal sense but it sure feels deadly in the moment!

We shouldn't forget that cinema is a visual art, so what matters is not how a certain thing FEELS, but rather how it LOOKS on screen. There are simply too many other medical conditions that are more in-your-face with their symptoms to pick from. In terms of visual dramatism stomach pains have no money on rashes and sudden lung/heart failures.

4

@Gikata Good point! I happily concede 😊

2

In Another Oh Hae Young, Oh Hae Young’s boss has Irritable Bowel Syndrome (first episode) also not an allergy. This often presents with similarities to lactose intolerance and as a fellow sufferer I was happy to see it represented in Another Oh.
Her boss was so funny is this series a complete scene stealer.

FL is allergic to tears - her own, thankfully, so at least she has some control over it. It's borderline deadly with shock, coma risk etc and plot deviced to the max, just like you expect from the genre. Personally I found this setup ridiculous, but this is not the show you watch for plot, so... Interesting thing is that she doesn't get miraculously cured in the end.

ML in TWO WEEKS has a severe shrimp allergy. It only mentioned once, but in a pretty extra fashion - he nearly kills himself eating them on first date with the future mother of his child. In the hindsight it also serves as a preview to how far man is willing to go for his beloved. Remember to NOT try this at home, kids!

Mugwort pollen: peach

thats like me with washing powder. I only use plant based organic liquids or soap nuts for that reason. some hotel bedsheets give me a dreadful rash and eye itch

2

You were exactly in my head when you mentioned Ryan Gold's lethal latte allergy in Her Private Life.

We had the nut allergy in Forecasting Love and Weather with Forecaster Um's daughter. Was that the only shrimp allergy in dramaland? I know there's another adult...was it the FL in 18 Again who reacted to shrimps?

I recall the ML in WWWSK having a particular nuts allergy like that as well.

And then we had those who's allergies were not foodwise. Like being allergic to sound and sight à la our ML Yoon Kye-sang in Kiss Sixth Sense. Or the germophobic ML in Clean With Passion For Now. And yes, I can't forget the peanut allergy of the Haraboji Lee's and his lost daughter in It's Beautiful Now.

Of all these allergies, Her Private Life's Ryan Gold's latte allergy stands out the most for me as the most lethal.

In Tale of the nine tailed, the FL (Ji-Ah) is allergic to a walnut and as a child effectively uses that to determine that her “mother” is really a demon after her parents die in a car crash and she wakes up with a set of parents impersonating her own. That scene was seriously disturbing to me. If I didn’t know Kim Bum and LDW were waiting for me on the other side of it, I’d probably have dropped that drama.

And a neglectful mother in Run On (I think) never remembers her son’s food allergy, and randomly fixes him food when she visits that he can’t even eat.
