Premiere Watch: Celebrity

Time slot: Friday (single drop)
Broadcaster: Netflix
Genre: Mystery, suspense, thriller
Episode count: 12

Reasons to watch: Netflix is back with their next series Celebrity, starring the lovely and talented Park Kyu-young. She plays an influencer of overnight success, but more than enjoy the fame and glamour, she’s ready to tear down the facade, expose her murder (errr, near-murder?), and do the thing that 2023 heroines do best: burn it down.

While the drama’s promotional materials have had a cheap-ish (in tone, not production quality) feel to them, the drama is being sold as a suspense thriller with a touch of noir, so that’s something to look forward to. And so is the rest of the main cast: Kang Min-hyuk, Lee Chung-ah, Lee Dong-gun, and Jeon Hyo-sung. We also have the PD from Flower of Evil, Confession, Mother, and Chicago Typewriter behind the camera, so may actions speak louder than words trailers, as the man clearly knows his flavor.

TL;DR: The savage inside world of celebrity through the eyes of Park Kyu-young

Dorky question for someone whose Hangul is better than mine (which is pretty much everyone ever in history)…why is the vowel in the second syllable different from the first one here in this title? When saying the word “Celebrity,” to me, the vowels in the first two syllables sound identical, and would be congruent to my understanding of the sound, ‘ㅔ.’ Not so above…and I bet there’s a reason I don’t know about.

Oh! And also…there’s this show!…we could watch it, if we wanted…and maybe it’d be great! Seems to have good people…So, who knows?!?! 😁

My knowledge of hangul and Korean in general is probably not even on par with yours but it probably is partly because the first two 'e's of celebrity are usually pronounced differently! International phonetic alphabet spells "celebrity" as "sɪˈlɛbɹɪti" (something like 'suh-leh-bruh-tee'?). There's probably variance in accents though

Yeah, in my accent, I don’t distinguish those two vowels when I say the word, “celebrity,” and even if I did pronounce it in the way the IPA says there, it had been my understanding those Hangul vowels would still be wrong, in fact, they’d be transposed back-to-front.

Ah well…the vicissitudes of transliteration!

All good. It was dorky anyway.

I shall now be calling this show “Celawbrity” in my head, though. 😉

You're right about the vowels, it's a weird order. And I get that in Korean you don't have the kinds of consonant combos we get all the time in English, but I think I'm going with "Celawbureety" for the title from now on.

@jls943 Suddenly—or should I say “toot sweet”—I understand how the French must feel?

Korean pronounce celebrity like 'celobrity' in street way thing. The o, 2nd vowel sound like o in oppa (sorry non English-speaking here). So they write 1st e with ㅔ and 2nd e with ㅓ

Totally off topic (but is this something new for me? I think not!) But I am so impressed with the surprisingly many kdrama international fans who are learning to speak Korea and write Hangul!

@attiton Absolutely the only reason I know what you are talking about is my linguistics professor brother-in-law, who calls Korean "the most perfect written language in the world" because the sounds correspond with the symbols. When he explained it to me, I drew on my own expertise, and pointed out that from another perspective, the Southern California surfer language of the early 21st century was the most perfect, because regardless of gender, race, age, or social status, it called everyone "Dude," thus conceptializing a world of perfect equality.

I have to admit, the first time a student called me "Dude," I was a little taken aback, and said "Hey--Its Prof Dude to you." But I did love listening to my teenage daughter's girl friends calling each other "Dude." I am generally out of touch with youth culture these days, so I don't know if dude is in common circulation, but I do know there was a time in the early 2100s, when everyone could be a Celebrity, by being laid back, and not savage!

I think "dude" has mostly been replaced by "bro" - which is how my son routinely addresses me.

On topic, Celebrity is now available on Netflix!

I also love how the “kids” pronounce “bro:” bruh. I don’t even think you need to actively shape any part of your mouth or throat to utter the noise. 🤣

God I sound old.

But how Korean pronunciation rules have evolved have created exceptions so now for the sake of fluidity certain sounds do not correspond to the letters. Just one example: 한류 (Korean wave) is pronounced ‘Halyu” but is written “Hanlyu”. Another one is when “ㅅ“ is followed by “l”, it is pronounced as “shi” and not “si”. There are many such exceptions.

In the American English I'm familiar with--growing up in the Midwest--the vowels in the first two syllables are exactly switched: 썰레. I don't know anyone who would pronounce the second syllable as 러. However, for "celebration," 쎌러 would sound right to me. So to me the title sounds misspelled.
