The Kidnapping Day: Episodes 8-9

The chase is on, and our trusty investigator is on the case. At long last, our sly schemer has finally shown her true colors, all while evading suspicion with her deceitful wiles. She may have a number of skeletons in her closet, but it turns out our hero is harboring a secret, too — one that he may not even remember himself.

EPISODES 8-9

Our heroes are intercepted mid-escape, and while Jaden lets Eun-seon off the hook since he still needs her research capabilities, he’s not so inclined to forgive Taek-kyun’s treachery. Except someone else fires their gun first — it’s Myung-joon, who misses “Jackson” entirely, since his good aim is limited only to computer games, LOL. Myung-joon may not be able to get English names right, but he’s most certainly not letting “Jason” gain the upper hand. Ro-hee has come prepared with an extra gun (which she gets to hold for a very excited five seconds), turning the tide in favor of our heroes.

Holding “JJ” at gunpoint, Myung-joon vows that Ro-hee will live just like any other 11-year-old from here on out. She’s a child, not a research subject. The men tie Jaden up and stuff him into the trunk, since they need to keep him captive for now. Myung-joon plans to turn both himself and Jaden in after Hee-ae’s surgery the next day, wanting to put an end to everything and allow Ro-hee to walk free.

The Kidnapping Day: Episodes 8-9

Meanwhile, Sang-yoon and his team round up Jaden’s thugs, but Ho-young remains frustratingly silent. The very next morning, the arrest warrant gets rejected, and the thugs walk free. It’s awful timing, because Ho-young immediately sets off in pursuit of our ragtag team, rescuing Jaden from the car trunk only to shove a gun into his mouth. Luckily for Jaden, it’s a blank — but a phone call from their English-speaking “boss” delivers a warning that a bullet will be going down Jaden’s throat next time, if he doesn’t deliver both Professor Choi’s research reports and Ro-hee.

While Myung-joon wanders off to buy a teddy bear for Hee-ae, Ho-young stabs Taek-kyun in the hospital parking lot. Myung-joon returns in time to call an ambulance for the bleeding lawyer, but he’s sorely outnumbered. Although Myung-joon manages to overpower Jaden and break his arm in retaliation for what he’s done to Ro-hee, Ho-young leaves him with a slashed palm and trampled ankle, allowing our baddies to speed off with Ro-hee in their clutches.

It’s becoming increasingly clear that Jaden is more bark than bite, while Ho-young’s stoic efficiency and inscrutable expressions (or lack thereof) make him a force to be reckoned with. Previously, it seemed like Myung-joon’s sincerity might have gotten through to him, but he’s since gone right back to his usual brand of brutal violence, so perhaps sympathy is off the table. Ho-young’s motivations may still be an unanswered question, but at least Jaden’s goal is clear and consistent. Having noticed the necklace that Ro-hee always wears, Jaden doesn’t hesitate to snatch it right off her neck, suspecting that it may somehow contain a key to Professor Choi’s research.

Jaden’s quest for Professor Choi’s research also leads him to overlap paths with Sang-yoon, who notes the coincidence of running into Jaden twice at both Eun-seon’s clinic and the Choi residence. Although Sang-yoon has been saddled with a disciplinary hearing and a month-long suspension for his unauthorized investigations, he’s not going to let police bureaucracy stop him from pursuing the truth. Myung-joon had warned him of a leak from the police force, and it’s looking increasingly likely that the mole is Sang-yoon’s team leader. Uh-oh.

The Kidnapping Day: Episodes 8-9

The kidnapping case may have been confiscated by the higher-ups, but Sang-yoon’s not one to quit. One last look around the Choi residence yields Professor Choi’s secret room of research documents, through which Sang-yoon finally gets the full picture of the Choi family’s child experimentation. The reports prove that Hye-eun was a test subject in the Genius Child Project, but she was the second one. The first? Myung-joon.

Back when Myung-joon had been adopted, Hye-eun had hidden herself in the trunk, hitching a ride all the way to the Choi residence. Out of desperation to leave the orphanage, she’d attempted to convince Chairman Choi to adopt her instead, going as far as to swap her IQ test with Myung-joon’s. That’s how Myung-joon ended up being sent back to the orphanage, while Hye-eun soon realized her adoption was not the blessing it initially seemed to be.

The Kidnapping Day: Episodes 8-9

Just as Hye-eun displayed her scheming from a young age, she’s still harboring more secrets in the present day. Injured and on the run after his altercation in the hospital, Myung-joon goes to Hye-eun’s apartment to nurse his wounds. While she’s out of the house, his search for a first aid kit leads him to find a hard drive containing Professor Choi’s CCTV recordings, taped to the bottom of a cabinet.

Next, Myung-joon heads over to Eun-seon’s clinic, arriving just in time to save her from a murder attempt by one of Jaden’s thugs. Apparently, if Jaden can’t secure her cooperation in rescinding her investment, then he’ll resort to the good old-fashioned route of direct elimination. Eun-seon snoops through the subdued lackey’s phone, finding messages that reveal Ro-hee is set to depart from the Sokcho port.

Just then, a knock on the door announces Sang-yoon’s arrival, in yet another instance of his perfect timing. Eun-seon barely manages to distract Sang-yoon, but he turns around just in time to catch Myung-joon red-handed in the midst of reaching for Eun-seon’s car keys, ha. Bemoaning his terrible luck, Myung-joon makes a run for it, speeding away in Eun-seon’s car with Sang-yoon close behind.

Elsewhere, someone cuts Jaden off just as he’s about to peel out of the driveway. It’s Hye-eun, sporting a self-assured smirk and a slick new look. She may not have the raw intelligence of Ro-hee or Myung-joon, but she’s proven herself to be a master manipulator who’s extremely patient in playing the long game.

Now that Hye-eun’s claws are out on full display, I’m anticipating Sang-yoon’s counterattack. He’s quick to put two and two together, and he’s already on her tail, but he’ll need to be more covert and crafty if he hopes to catch her in a trap. That moment when all expression slowly slid off Hye-eun’s face, as she noticed the blinking light of Sang-yoon’s wiretapping device, was downright chilling — this lady is not an adversary to be underestimated.

Another character who’s adept at seeing the big picture is Ro-hee, who’s realized that the dates don’t add up — there’s an entire day missing from her memory, right before she was kidnapped. Ro-hee may have spent most of this week’s episodes in captivity, but she’s no damsel in distress. As a last-ditch effort to escape Jaden’s clutches, Ro-hee requests one last meal from Ho-young before they depart for Russia — shrimp fried rice. Except, as you may remember from the anaphylactic shock that sent Myung-joon dashing to the hospital with her on his back, Ro-hee is severely allergic to shrimp. She’s courageously gambling her life on the chance of escape, and while it’s no doubt a risky plan, her tenacity is certainly remarkable.

That, my fellow Beanies, is a sleeve.

Ok, we didn’t quite get the teamup between Sang-yoon and Myung-Ro that we were all cheering for, but I still have faith that it’s on the horizon very soon. I could not be more ready for this beloved chaotic duo to become a chaotic trio. And you know with Sang-yoon suspended he’s only going to get more chaotic ;)

I love pretty much every second that uri Myung-joon and Ro-hee are on screen together. Even though it was dark this week, them cracking jokes together and ragging on each other good naturedly was just the best. I loved Attorney Choi’s addition to their group - I really hope he turns out to be a solid character through and through, and repays Ro-hee’s trust in him, because I find him very endearing and was absolutely breathless when he was stabbed.

Hye-eun has been sketchy for so long - even as a kid! I get that she was desperate to be adopted, but she has seriously been using Myung-joon for their entire lives without showing any kind of remorse. I agree @solstices that she was so creepy when she turned on her tears in the meeting with the security guy and then turned them off so completely when she discovered the wiretap. It’s interesting that Myung-joon was the one who actually had what Prof Choi was looking for all those years ago, not her.

But also pretty tragic is Doctor Mo. She can’t stand the fact that her daughter is developing more slowly than other children, but her kid is healthy and safe (and probably would be happy if she saw her mom more often). So it seems to me that what she thinks she’s doing out of love is at least partly motivated by social status and ego.

Same! I can't wait for the chaotic trio!

It took me a while to process the situation with Doctor Mo. I couldn't believe she was doing all of this when she has a perfectly healthy kid at home.
It was sad watching the scenes with Byeol. It seems like she's having a hard time because of the pressure from her mom. She looks so lonely.

Also, dealing with JJ, Jackson, oh right, Jaden, is only putting her and her daughter in danger. Byeol could end up orphan if Dr Mo keeps obsessing over the project.

I'm a tiny bit worried that Sang-yoon is going to get arrested, not just suspended. Police corruption that runs upward out of sight seems like a given in kdramas.

My first reaction to Hye-eun's outfit there was to wonder why she's wearing a circus tent. She is certainly no longer trying to keep a low profile. I also have to admire this show’s use of PPL. The best kind of car advertising is the kind that demonstrates how helpful the hatch lift is for loading a bound and gagged villain into the cargo hold. I’m looking forward to seeing how a Subway sandwich can be used as a lethal weapon and Tiffany bracelets as functional handcuffs.

I was laughing so hard at the hatch lift PPL too! It was weirdly well done because it was so in character for Myung-joon not to know how to work it. If someone could please slap someone else in the face with a Subway sandwich, my life would near completion.

It’s interesting that Myung-joon was the one who actually had what Prof Choi was looking for all those years ago, not her.

Are you implying that Myung Joon purposely failed the IQ test, so Hye Eun could take his place? So he is clever behind his dumb facade or he just listens to his heart over his brain?

Okay I missed the part where the little Hye Eun switched the papers. @britney 's comment cleared it up.

Still, it doesn't explain why the adult MJ seems to be dumb, in contrast with the little MJ.

I took it to mean that Prof Choi looked at his drawings and writing all over the test and saw the kind of raw material he was looking for. Maybe it was creativity, maybe it was something else. Heck, it could have just been that Myung-joon was a blank slate ready to be molded. But there was something about that that was preferable to the earnest question-answering of Hye-eun, and she suspected it by the end of the test.

I guess a lot of us hope and expect that Myung-joon ends up with custody over Ro-hee (although who actually has custody over who might be debatable) and that they and Hee-ae end up as one big happy/healthy (and rich) family. But can we be sure that Dr. Mo's kid won't also join the family while Dr. Mo ends up dead or in prison?

There have been hints that Dr. Mo's daughter's condition is not what it first seemed to be, and that the real problem is the disconnect between the highly intelligent, precocious child Dr. Mo wants (and maybe feels entitled to) and the one she has, who would benefit from mainstreaming and some remedial help/therapy. She seems to be fixated on the idea that 'ordinary' isn't good enough. She's got plenty to learn from Myung-joon's more accepting, let-kids-be-kids parenting approach.

I'm also scared Dr Mo dies.
I don't remember if the father is still in the picture. If he isn't... I guess Myung Joon ahjussi is gonna end up taking care of three kids.

I thought Dr Mo's daughter was ill somehow but she's just slow?

Poor traumatized Ro Hee; seeing all that violence in front of her is rough.

Myeong Jun is such a good guy. I want him to somehow maintain a relationship with Ro Hee when all this is over though not sure how that would work.
It's interesting how NO ONE ELSE can seem to fathom why he would care about a child that's not his own with no benefit to himself. You would think he's an alien.

So, I thought kid Myeong Jun was just goofing around when taking the test so I was surprised about her switching the tests and finding out that's how she ended up taken in. Current Myeong Jun doesn't seem particularly academically gifted so how well did he do on the test? Or were they being spied on and the doctor saw her ambition which led to her being chosen?

Finally Myeong Jun & the detective are together again!
Now only need Ro Hee for the team to be complete.

I feel so bad for Ro Hee. I don't really want her to fully remember what happened that night, and if she could forget about Lawyer-nim being stabbed that would be even better. She doesn't need to remember all that, she's just a kid. 🥺

It's interesting how NO ONE ELSE can seem to fathom why he would care about a child that's not his own with no benefit to himself. You would think he's an alien.

IKR?? But the ones asking him those questions are the ones abusing Ro Hee so I guess it isn't that weird they don't understand. They all think of what they can get from her, they don't really seem to think of her as a kid or even a person.

Yes, I think Dr. Mo's daughter just has some developmental delays and is not ill as it may have been implied in earlier episodes.

I really enjoyed the beginning of episode 8. It was so nice watching the good guys win for once! And it was nice watching them smile and make plans for the future. BUT when I saw them act so relaxed going shopping, eating, and buying stuffed animals (and leaving RH alone) I got anxious.

It wasn't a really smart move, tbh. I even found strange that Ro Hee was so calm and relaxed. She's the one that doesn't trust anyone, she always thinks of all the possibilities. So it was kinda weird watching her act like this.
Apparently they didn't even mentioned Jaden's existence to the detective? They didn't tell him everything. So why were they so chill?

However, after watching episode 9 I started to think that maybe it was for the best. I don't trust a single soul in the police department. They need really strong evidence to fight them, and they don't have that yet.

Next week episodes look intense but also fun! I'm going to miss this show so much. Can't believe we have only three episodes left. 🥺

Agree, they were too relaxed when they decided to buy the clothes for Myeong-jun and have lunch at the Chinese restaurant. They should've just contacted the detective Sung-hoon to meet them prior and escort them to the hospital, since Sung-hoon already agreed for Myeong-jun to surrender only after Hee-ae's surgery. And also tell the detective about the whole thing, the project, Jaden's intentions etc.

There was too little interaction between Myung Joon and Ro Hee for obvious reasons. The show should not separate them this long. I feel bad for Ro Hee but the girl sure is tenacious and cunning.
Hye Eun ia definitely not someone to mess with. I can't believe Myung Jun fell for her machi...wait back up. I am talking about a guy eho is putty in the hands of an 11 year old. It is possible.
So he should've been the first child until Hye Eun got her clawd into that opportunity. But it backfired on her because of that incident at the hospital with Cheol Won and most likely because of her less than stellar intelligence compared to Jin Tae. She definitely has the motivation to kill and exact her revenge.
I am most looking forward to Sang Hyun joining the team next week. Also the much awaited reunion between the kidnappee and kidnapper.

I can never guess the plot twists in this show! I haven’t been this at the edge of my seat since SAVE ME. It’s the only currently airing drama I watching at the moment and no regrets man, it’s so good!

Hye-eun is interesting, I’m curious about all her choices, it does seem like she murdered Dr Choi as revenge but I also want to know her plan???

I keep hoping Ho Young will somehow start his redemption in these episodes, as there seems to be some flicker of emotion ( or am I just imagining it?) whenever there is talk of harming Ro-hee. Alas , he did not. But I still have hope, Ro hee, Myung joon and Sang yun definitely could use some help.

He just follows orders. It's his job. I am sure the redemption will start on next week's episodes when I predict he will try to save Ro Hee from the allergic reaction due to the shrimp fried rice. I saw a bit of "caring" on his eyes when he brought the food into the room where Ro Hee was being held captive.

If Jaden is not dead by the end of the season, I will be very angry. I hate him so much.

I forgot to mention the, is it misogyny, of the doctor wanting male successors? His first choice was Myeong Jun and then after Hye Eun was injured/attacked, he got another boy.

I wouldn't be surprised if it were revealed that Myeong Jun had volunteerily given up the opportunity to stay with the doctor regardless of the IQ test.

misogyny and sexism is not the same thing, despite social media "influencers" often trying to postulate it is.

Also, Myeong was NEVER a successor, he was a potential experimental subject who was easily replaced by Hye Eun.

Given the preview, we will finally see our two male leads work together yayy :D.

I thought Myeongjun might have been experimented on and that's why he is so "dumb" and strong. But he only was there for 2 days.. so that was probably a wrong theory.

Maybe this will bite me, but i think Hye Eun might be a red herring. Regardless she was creepy af in that interrogation room...

Also, thanks for clearing up that Myeongjun was doodling because he FINISHED the IQ test. I thought he didn't finish it. I was so tired when i watched that episode, i totally missed it. I also doodled a lot onto the paper as a child (..i still do) because i got bored of the easy questions, well until it catched onto me that i didn't learn xD. Maybe Myeongjun is a similar case.

I would feel bad if Myung Joon was used by Hye Eun all along, but it would also be sad if Myung Joon voluntarily let him get used by her, which is why I do not want Hye Eun to be the master mind behind this whole murder.

I am betting that Ro Hee already knows about the hidden chip in her chain and replaced/removed it.

She did used MJ all along. It's the same case with her using the CCTV guy all along, making use of her guilt. Hye-eun is really conniving.

On the other hand, I like the child actress playing young Hye-eun. She did a good job in portraying a conniving little girl.

Wow, this show keeps getting better and better. I love all the plot twists, which are totally unforeseeable, yet totally believable.

As many fellow beanies wondered, why someone with a super-high IQ can be/act so "dumb": this can happen easily, when high-giftedness goes unrecognised. Highly-gifted children "play dumb" in order to fit in. In combination with a lack of adequate schooling, they might even forget about their abilities. The constant feeling of "otherness" can lead to low-self esteem, too.
