Writernim and PDs, you are hacks. All of you.

You fell back on lying over and over again, on separation seemingly endlessly, on even voyeurism, and then on amnesia TWICE to force an emotional and thematic gravitas, weight, ending and meaning, which undoes everything you set it up to be instead.
You are Hacks. And pathetic excuses for executors of your craft.

Anything, anything of value you might have to say, is rendered worthless by your treatment of everything else.

I read enough of your fanwall post to see that this is based off of Gone with the Wind, and now I feel like I really have enough info to decide if I want to watch it (that's a no, by the way). Thanks.

I have mixed feelings about this drama, because part one by itself some of the best K-drama I've seen in ages but part two was a real let down as a whole (for me) and that taints the first part in many aspects because there was potential and then it crashed. How do you reckon with that? 🤷‍♀️

It's also a drama where there were so many things happening across all levels of production, and I can't find the words to encompass my feelings on all of that. So I'll leave it at this for now: this sageuk is not for the weak hearted. The violence, politics and raw portrayal of its take on history is a lot and it doesn't let up as episodes go in (if anything, it gets more intense). And if you're hoping for the romance to counterbalance, then you're out of luck. But despite the heavy, heavy (HEAVY) dose of angst, as well as exasperating and questionable narrative choices, the brightest spot in this show are it's cast - particularly the leads - who give a performance of a lifetime.

Would I recommend? I watched it because I started live-watching and I wanted to finish to see how the story end, but would I have started it knowing how the story goes? I'm honestly not sure what to say, but seeing how much my threshold for endless emotional torture was pushed, I don't know if I would've started if I'd known what was in store for me. Do with that what you will when making your own decision!

Part 1 had its moments. The GWTW parallel universe was cute but ultimately I think was a bad decision because once those parallel scenes dried up, the writers were lost
Part 2 was a mess .
Actors did what was in the script, the actors were fine, the script however , aigoo.
I will say watch Nokdu Flower for your sageuk fix.
Also , the drama special Return Home (2012), set in 1641, covers the issues of returning slaves to Qing. Quite gripping, it covers 90% of the same issues in only 1.5 hrs. Spoiler : This is some payback regarding the “tainted women” . Well worth watching .

This drama was one of the best dramas I've seen in a long time. I never had the feeling that it was based off of Gone With the Wind. That being said, it was so good! I'm a 43 year old woman. I've been there done that. It's very hard to say that when you see something that pulls your heart strings so hard in 2023 is unique and rare so I encourage you to savor each precious moment. There really are no words equal to describe how good this is. Just watch it, please. You won't regret it.

Totally agree with you. MD may not be perfect but it's one of the best kdramas I have watched in a while, esp considering that sageuk is not my genre. I agree that at times it is hard to watch but we have to remember that this is set during a very painful time in Korea's history. The acting, cinematography, music, fight scenes, character development, etc make it so worth it. Love the leads and I was truly invested in their characters. The final episode was so beautiful and touching. I'm sure MD will reap a lot of awards.

Endless angst, too much waiting if you are in for the romance, at times really stupid decisions ( that's how I felt), violence, politics, you would wish to kill off the king rather than the invaders! Gory, violent, angsty, separations, sums it up.

Agree! Also the frequent wizzing between Qing and Hangyang like Joseon had invented high speed rail! Surely these journeys would have been so arduous they would have happened 1-2 times max in a person’s lifetime?

I watched this only because I love Namkoong Min, however flicked forward through a lot of it because there was a severe lack of romance for a series entitled ‘My Dearest’ (false marketing!). And my frustration levels were constantly so high due to the fact that all these tragedies unfolded because, over and over again, the protagonists wouldn’t open their mouths and bloody-well communicate with each other. And in most scenarios it’s not because of some Confucian social rule, it’s because the writers needed ongoing wilful miscommunication (or lack of) between the characters to drive the plot forward. Once or twice maybe, but over and over? Too much.

Many loved this drama, but the leads annoyed me endlessly. I felt like going inside and smacking them for the stupid angst ....I've formed a new, bad habit, cursing at my screen and shouting out my opinions.

Yes I am shouting at the screen a lot more these days usually when the second lead is moping about with some sad background music. My new catch phrase is: Nobody cares!

Tell me ...I'm watching Samdalri .....and so so so very annoyed with the supposed second lead where there is no possibility of a second lead.

I'm here for some clues about whether to watch or not - sageuk is not my favourite and I am absolutely Joseoned out for now at least, so one point for something a bit different. Also one more point if it has a GWTW feel - one of my favourite novels that I stayed up all night to finish decades ago, even though I had to go to work next morning, because I just couldn't wait to find out what happened. Unfortunately it has been overshadowed by the film version, which I liked well enough to watch at least 3 times over the years.

The reason I'm replying to your post rather than any other is your comment about stupid decisions, which I'm guessing you mean by the characters. I tend to be really critical about stupid decisions, and my living room frequently resounds with, "How stupid!" "OMG, not again, I can't stand it", and "What did he/she do that for!" but ... now the GWTW reference touched on by other people is making me consider stupid decisions in the context of the wider panorama of war, rather than the much smaller sphere of the average human life at any given moment.

We watch k-dramas and have the benefit of knowing every secret that might have been spilled, though not all characters are in on the information. We see moments between people that other characters don't see, and unless the drama is also hiding information from its viewers, we are like gods in a way, seeing all, possibly knowing all, and being critical of responses that don't chime with what we might do given all the information we have (not least the well-traveled road of a typical k-drama and all the wrist grabbing, secrecy, misunderstandings, noble idiocy, etc. that I am certain new characters are not aware of the way we are, after seeing it all play out a hundred times).

I am so guilty of criticising this, and usually pretty scathing with it, but thinking back to Scarlett O'Hara's selfish, unthinking behaviour and how the unusual hardships of war and environment, plus the unexpected twists and turns of fate when there is limited control over one's own life, forced her to grow up enough to cope and survive (though ultimately she was still fooling herself) I find that my attitude has softened a bit concerning dumb character decisions, because I'm probably older and wiser than they are, I'm not easily swayed by anyone or anything the way some people are, nor do I give a fig for convention. I'm now realising how dismissive I am from on high about other people's decisions, and though I rationalise my own, perhaps the people that know me might beg to differ!

I am intrigued abput this drama now, especially as I've just read about all the awards it bagged today. While writing this I've decided to give it s go, so let's see if my new-found patience can last!

You should give it a try. The leads annoyed me, but you might see it differently.
I have grown intolerance towards certain stuff in kdramas, which I watch for fun and enjoyment.

I cried for days because of this drama. The male lead was so well written and he’s the greenest flag I’ve ever watched that’s why my heart breaks for him over and over. FL made some wrong decisions but if you would look at her character carefully you would understand why. I’d say for me, this is the best performance of nam goongmin. The way he portrayed Jang Hyun is just so…perfect. This story of how two people couldn’t be with each other because of war and conflicts in their country is just so heartbreaking. I love the kind of ML that would abandon everything to save his beloved but is not impulsive and dumb. Jang Hyun is that kind of ML, reliable and smart

As for the FL, she is brave, smart and strong especially for the era where the story is set. Her character has flaws but that’s what made her an interesting character. What I love about her the most is how she always think quick and protect the people around her.
