News bites: November 20, 2023

Park Bo-young, Choi Woo-shik

  • If the stars align, Park Bo-young (Daily Dose of Sunshine) and Choi Woo-shik (Our Beloved Summer) may be paired in a new series called Melo Movie, melting the coldest of hearts with their cutie patootie smiles. As the newest project by writer Lee Na-eun (Our Beloved Summer), the romance is currently at the casting stage and is aiming to begin production in 2024. [News]

  • Storing his scalpel away, Han Seok-kyu (Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim 3) is now in talks to lead a new psychological thriller, MBC’s The Intimate Traitor (working title). With plans to start filming in March of next year, production is being led by PD Song Yeon-hwa (Wild Boar Hunting) and writer Han Ah-young, an Excellence Award winner at MBC’s 2021 script writing contest. [Star News]
  • Speaking of thrillers, Jo Jin-woong (The Good Bad Mother) confirmed casting for the upcoming No Way Out, taking on the crime drama’s leading role. Jo is expected to begin filming this week, joining Yeom Jung-ah (Cleaning Up), Yoo Jae-myung (Song of the Bandits), Kim Mu-yeol (High Cookie), Lee Kwang-soo (The Killer’s Shopping List), and Taiwanese actor Greg Hsu (Someday or One Day). [JTBC]

Han Ji-min, Lee Jun-hyuk

  • SBS announced that their new series Acquaintances (working title) has been slotted into the schedule, headlined by a CEO Han Ji-min (Behind Your Touch) and her Renaissance man secretary Lee Jun-hyuk (Vigilante). Yay! The office romance will be launching in 2024, with scripts penned by Kim Ji-eun and PD Ham Jun-ho (Payback, My Strange Hero) directing. [News1]
  • Also coming next year is tvN’s webtoon adaptation Jung-nyun, starring Kim Tae-ri (Revenant), Shin Ye-eun (The Secret Romantic Guesthouse), and Ra Mi-ran (Cold Blooded Intern) – in addition to Moon Sori (Race) in a special guest role. Culturing us with music and theatre from 1950s Korea, the period drama has PD Jung Ji-in (The Red Sleeve Cuff) at the helm with writing by Choi Hyo-bi (A Time Called You). [News1]
  • In the meantime, we’ll be stopping over in 1989 with Coupang Play’s Boyhood, which released new posters and a second teaser. Premiering later this week on November 24, we’ll be following the (epic?) journey of our bumpkin hero Im Shi-wan (Summer Strike) alongside Lee Sun-bin (Work Later, Drink Now 2), Lee Shi-woo (See You in My 19th Life), and Kang Hye-won (Seasons of Blossom). Woah. The writer of “Our Beloved Summer”? Then I’m ready for “Melo Movie”. (Please no time lapse, though, thanks!)

And of course I could watch almost anything with lovely Han Jimin. “Office romance” has been done before, but at least she is the CEO here, so… *grabs popcorn*

And he is apparently a single father. That should be lovely.

I'll grab a seat next to you but we'll be eating a lot of popcorn if we start now considering they don't even start till next year. 🤣

LJH (1984) playing a ‘man secretary’ means LJH back in suits.

Presumably he will be back in suits in TVING’s upcoming GOOD OR BAD DONG JAE. I am now experiencing very early availability angst for GOBDJ because of TVING’s recent association with Paramount+. GOBDJ may wind up streaming on Paramount+ which would be a no go for me. Fingers crossed it doesn’t happen.

1) I'm not fan when a writer just chose the same actor than her last drama. I like to see new combinations of PD/writer/actors. I like the actors, it will be a contest of cuteness.

2) I dropped Wild Boar Hunting. Storing but there is Han Seok-kyu, so maybe.

3) With the actors from cinema, the dramas are starting to become very expensive. Usual networks won't be able to follow, it's kinda sad.

4) Lee Jun-hyuk is a positive role! I'm tired by his villain ones.

5) It looks interesting! The era and the triplet of women are promising.

6) Not convinced by this one.

Lee Jun Hyuk in a romance? I NEVER THOUGHT I’D SEE THIS DAY! The drama gods have finally heard my cries😭❣️
Now I’ll add another request, pls be good, pls be good, pls be good. Chaebal!🙏🏾🙏🏾

I’m hardly ever interested in thrillers when they are announced, regardless of the cast (with SIG & PSD ‘Death Game’ an exception), but the title THE INTIMATE TRAITOR has me a little curious at least. May check it out.

I’ve been mostly ignoring all of BOYHOOD’s promos, but these two posters have finally caught my interest. They look like a riot! We’ll see.

Those COUPONG TV posters for BOYHOOD (no legal US stream as of now) are nice but to me they look like they are showing a bunch of guys on the day of their discharge from the military.
Siwan still in high school? Please!!

Same - unless it's all part of the joke. But that kind of joke could wear thin pretty quickly. Every member of the cast listed or shown so far is well into their 20s or 30s and looks it, and in the previews they're not even pretending to look like HS kids. I'm betting there's some twist or gimmick we haven't seen yet. Watermelon Sugar on steroids?

I could actually see this concept--everyone in the cast goes back in time to their collective teen age years but retain their 2023 bodies. If the whole school is like that, it could be a funny parody of high school time travel dramas.

I like when actors make little visit in other countries (but not if they are dubbed).

Chae Jong Hyeop is filming a Japanese drama, Eye Love You, I wonder how it will work. ( I wonder about Is It Fate? too, he alredy filmed it)

There was a TW - Japanese drama, it was nice to the mix of actors.

As a jdrama fan, I was so
excited to find out CJH will be starring alongside Fumi iirc. Maybe we're gonna see another era of JP x SK collabs, like they used to do back in the day. (Anyone else remember the time Taecyeon and Kim Tae-hee were in a JP romcom?)

This is perhaps the best News Bite that I nod to almost all the new dramas/casting.

* PBY + CWS + Writer of Our Beloved Summer - a big YES!
* HSK in a psychological thriller - Oh YES! He hasn’t done this for a while and he’s so good in this genre especially in his early movie days.
* LJH in a romance, single dad and secretary to the CEO who will fall in love with him?! Yes, especially with HJM.
* The thriller to be headlined by JJW and that cast - they are traversing the drama with an A-list movie cast.

Wow, so much to look forward in 2024!!

Oooh, I hope #1 comes to fruition. I love Choi Woo-shik and I loved Our Beloved Summer. Can we get the same music person back in charge please?

I’ll also watch Jo Jin-woong in pretty much anything. He was pretty much the best thing about The Bad Mother, and I bet he’ll be the best thing about this drama too (particularly if he’s leading)!

I’m definitely interested in Acquaintances, and I’m happy to see the normal gender roles reversed. I hope they don’t use that as an excuse to have gross dynamics that no one would put up with if the man was the boss though.

Also very excited to get more news of Jung-nyun, which will be amazing if the writing lives up to these actors!

Sorry Im Shi-wan, this is the only one on the list I’m just not interested in at all. I watched the 2014 film Boyhood, and while I could acknowledge that it was pretty incredibly done, I didn't love that either. Having never had a boyhood, and being mildly disgusted by teenage boys at the best of times, it’s a pass from me unless I hear something incredible (and I mean really incredible) when it’s finished.

I bailed after JJW died in Bad/Good Mother. JTBC is on a roll in the casting department. Hopefully, it'll translate to good drama and ratings.

- Park Bo-young and Choi Woo-shik, the fountain of youth. I've never considered them a potential romance pair, but I'm all for it.
- Han Seok-kyu is a must-watch, even if I'm not in the mood for thrillers. "Watcher" turned out well, even though I didn't want to watch it.
- Wowzer! "No Way Out" has a star-studded cast. It's good to see Jo Jin-woong back in dramaland, and Greg Hsu is the biggest surprise.

The one that got me most excited is Lee Jun Hyuk in an office romance with Han Ji Min. He already has the Dong Jae spinoff and this. More chances to see him in a drama! Also Vigilante got more exciting with him in it

My eyes popped out at Greg Hsu ... is that real, does he have a full-fledged role or just a cameo, latter seems probable since he is listed at the last. Wow ... this is bigger than no. 1. Will wait eagerly for more news on this "cutie patootie".

1. Always yes for "cutie patooties". Thank you tccolb for using such a "fun phrase".

2. Definitely 👍

3. 👀 where is Greg Hsu and what is he doing here. Have to keep my eyes on him. 😀

4. Yes please - couldn't they get ...you-know-who. Nevertheless, yes!

5. Always, always happy to be "cultured in music and theatre" also 1950s Korea sounds  - er, different. Heh!

6. Kol!

LJH and HJM in a office romance healing drama. Definitely a yes. LJH has this warmth in him that I really hoped he will be in a romcom. Wish granted with the ever talented han ji min. Good looking actors with the acting chops. Oh drama gods, may the writer and director be good!!!

1. This is such a cute pairing. And it's by the writer of Our Beloved Summer? Sold. Now all it needs is good writing.

2. I liked Wild Boar Hunting and Han Seok-kyu is always a delight to watch. Hope this works out.

3. I was NOT expecting Greg Hsu to turn up here??!? OMG.

4. My beloved Lee Jun-hyuk in a romcom... oh I have prayed for times like these. My dreams come true. Hot single-dad secretary and hot female CEO is truly the ideal office romance pairing. If this fails, I will be devastated and broken beyond repair.

5. Worth watching for the cast alone. *Saoirse Ronan voice* WOMEN!!!

6. The poster cracks me up because why are these grown ass men cosplaying as "high schoolers"? Why are they pretending like they're in Mad Max: Fury Road? So many questions and not enough answers.
