News bites: November 8, 2023

  • New character posters (look at those light prisms!) have arrived for SBS’s upcoming My Demon, showcasing our leads Kim Yoo-jung (Lovers of the Red Sky) and Song Kang (Forecasting Love and Weather), who will soon be bound by fate and contract marriage. Premiering this month on November 24, the fantasy rom-com will be following 7 Escape: War for Survival in the weekend slot. [SBS]

  • Speaking of rom-coms, the promos continue on JTBC as well, with new stills of fashion photographer Shin Hye-sun (See You in My 19th Life) in Welcome to Samdalri, who stars opposite her hometown bestie Ji Chang-wook (If You Wish Upon Me). Coming to our screens on December 2, production has PD Cha Young-hoon (Forecasting Love and Weather) at the helm with scripts penned by Kwon Hye-joo (Hi Bye, Mama!). [News1]

  • A new fantasy romance has been lined up on TVING, pairing Gong Myung (Lovers of the Red Sky) with Kim Min-ha (Pachinko) in A Week Before I Die (roughly translated). Based on a novel by the same title, the series is aiming to release in 2025 with Noh Deok (Glitch) as creator, filmmaker Choi Hana (More Than Family) directing, and writing by Song Hyun-joo and Jang In-jung. [News1]
  • After Kim Young-dae (Moon in the Day) puts his Shilla sword to rest, he’ll soon be revisiting another past love, reuniting with Park Joo-hyun (The Forbidden Marriage) in Perfect Family. Also starring Yoon Se-ah (Snowdrop) and Kim Byung-chul (Doctor Cha), the mystery is currently in filming with Japanese filmmaker Yukisada Isao (River’s Edge) as the talent behind the camera. [Osen]

  • tvN released their first stills for the music-mystery Maestra: Strings of Truth, with our charismatic conductor heroine Lee Young-ae (Inspector Koo) taking the stage. Alongside co-stars Lee Moo-saeng (The Glory), Kim Young-jae (Numbers), and Hwang Boreumbyeol (The Secret Romantic Guesthouse), the remake will be launching on December 9. [News1]
  • ENA also came out with a bundle of stills, giving us our first look at the main cast of The Sand Flower. Starring Jang Dong-yoon (Daily Dose of Sunshine), Lee Joo-myung (Twenty Five Twenty One), Yoon Jong-seok (Our Blooming Youth), and Kim Bora (Finland Papa) among others, the mystery rom-com is slated to air on December 20 in the Wednesday-Thursday slot. 1) I'm excited. They look to have a great chemistry!

2) I'm excited for this pairing too!

3) In 2025? Ok... I have time to forget about it.

4) KYD is pretty bad in Moon, I'm not sure to watch him in a next drama...

5) I will test it.

6) I like the casting. Mystery rom-com is less exciting.

Hmm... this crop of dramas is mostly filled with "hmm, we'll see" for me 😅

The pictures from My Demon (still bummed it’s not called “My Lovely Demon” - feels like a missed opportunity) continue to be so pretty. I’m also excited for it for lots of other reasons, but wow, the pretty.

Everything I see for Welcome to Samdalri looks amazing, so why am I so trepidatious about it? As a drama watcher, I guess you just need to be ready to put your heart on the line. It will either be fantastic or supremely disappointing, but I’m ready.

No. 2. JTBC’s SAMDALRI. MDL reports S/S, 16 episodes.
US availability: Netflix. Episode one airs Dec. 2. I am definitely there.

No. 6. I have had my eyes in this project and it is nice to get some news. ENA’s THE SAND FLOWER,
With Jang Dong-yoon playing a ssireum (korean wrestling) prodigy I will be there. I am thinking of this as a sports drama and a look into the world of ssireum.
I am so pleased for JDY’s success in 2023. I loved him in KBS’s OASIS (Viki US). I am enjoying him in DAILY DOSE OF SUNSHINE (Netflix).

On THE SAND FLOWER’s Wikipedia page there is this production note:
“In June 2023, production company AStory announced that it had signed a license supply contract with Netflix for the overseas broadcasting rights of the series.”. Perhaps there will be no availability angst for US viewers.
MDL reports this drama will be W/T, episodes?, episode one airing Dec. 20.

With both dramas starting in December the (for me) rather fallow kdrama year of 2023 is ending on a high note.
(At this point I will be also watching KBS’s KOREA-KHITAN WAR on Viki US).

JDY is a delight and a half on screen. Whenever I think of him as Mrs Kim in the “Tale of Nokdu”, I can’t help but laugh.

That is one of JDY’s dramas I have missed.

Please watch it! It also has Kim Sohyun. The first half is fun and funny but the second half is heartache territory.

I wonder why My Demon has such buzz around it but I'm sure it will be a successful show.

I will be rooting for both Gong Myung and Kim Min-ha, as they have great potential to succeed.

Most interested in Gong Myung's drama. I checked the synopsis and it feels like a melo. And its for a 2025 release, such a long wait.

Other articles have the same date but I still wonder if that's a typo. I don't recall any drama announced so far ahead - plenty of planned productions have fallen apart in that span of time.

That would be a shame if this falls through. I sure hope this will not be cancelled since GM is due to headline his own drama.

I have seen a few dramas that are due for release a lot later than I would like. I wonder if it’s about scheduling once the actors are locked in they want to start the hype from now maybe for the PPL or to get the fans onboard so they can fundraise for the food truck goodies.
I noticed it with You have done well, IU’s and Park Bogum’s new drama which was mentioned much earlier this year. Apparently filming is ongoing but it’s not due out until 2025. I thought it was a typo and they meant 2024 but all info is still pointing to 2025.
Since then I have noticed other dramas with similar time frames but because I was so invested in that drama it was the first time I registered how far in advance of the release date they start the promotion posts.

Do they already have a broadcaster? For PBG and IU's drama i mean. Maybe the local broadcaster already have dramas slated for 2024 so theirs got pushed back to 2025.

Yay for 1 and 2.

To soon to comment on 3 and 4.

5 - I love dramas with musicians as lead but ...

6 - "mystery rom-com" = serial killer, right?

I am glad that's over with, since I haven't watched live a show with so much online enthusiasm I never knew that extending a show can be so complicated. I really hope they got what they wanted and that they can finish the show how they want it. All of them worked, and still are, so hard and my only wish they will feel happy and satisfied with the end product. I know I already got so much from watching this show that these little things are insignfincant. Even if the whole thing was a publicity stunt I would understand them because there are so many shows running right now and the competion is fierce. They did reveal that the last episode script was delivered today to keep the ending secret, so they are hyping it as much as they can. 😜
Thanks for the beer and chicken 🤣

I'm a fan of Shin Hye-sunbut only because of *Mr Queen* (which I am about to watch for the 3rd time *cough*); I've sene her in *Legend of the blue sea* and 2 episodes of *My 19th life* or whatever and... blah. So I will give her new show a go! Hope it's good!

The week before I die, The sand flower and Welcome to Samdalri are all on the potential watchlist. Some of these dramas sound more likely to stay on the watchlist than others. Is a ‘mystery rom com’ the new (finally) explicit, you know what you are walking into, name for a drama that will have a stalker/murder plot line alongside the light and airy main rom com story?

Wow. Did I misread this comment the first five times. I read:

The week before I die, I will be watching The Sand Flower and Welcome to Samdalri

…and I thought OH NO, REPLY! What’s with this end-of-life planning?? And, perhaps, even more pressingly—why those TWO dramas??? 🫣😬

Sorry for the typo scare! Hopefully no one else panicked for me but instead joined the watch this space crowd wondering if A week before I die with a ridiculously long lead time promotion will stay on the watch list or drop off before 2025.

I think Shin Hye-sun could be cast as a plumber, HVAC installer or pest exterminator and I would be all-in for it.
