Drama viewership ratings for the week of January 1-7, 2024

Marry My Husband turns up the heat in our Monday-Tuesday slot with almost 6% for its premiere week, so that’s nice for a change. Also looking good are the ratings for Like Flowers in Sand, which broke the 2% mark this week, which is more than many ENA dramas can say. Arise, underdog!

As for our crowded weekend space, The Story of Park’s Marriage Contract ended over the 9% mark, The Goryeo-Khitan War crossed 10% with its return to regular programming, and Welcome to Samdal-ri is nearly to 10% as well. Curiously, My Demon has been seeing a steady decline since its midpoint, and it hits a new low this week.

I can understand why ratings are dipping for My Demon... it just feels very boring and low energy rn. perhaps resolving the will they, won't so soon + including past lives trauma... like every 2023 kdrama was not the best idea.

I'm surprised thee ratings for Park's Marriage is so high. the impression I got was that not too many ppl were enjoying it rn?

This week's episode of MD felt muted as it explored the past lives. I havent finished 12 yet so I understand why it also had lower ratings

Lots of people around like Park's Marriage (me included) and have been waiting for the finale!! It's good and fun, although I feel the last two episodes is so rushed

I am enjoying Park's Marriage and the impression does not impact the ratings. I can see why: A strong heroine through and through and the writer definitely knows where to take the drama.

I'm so, so, so, tired of the past lives/reincarnation trope right now. It's just rewalking the same path. At this point the only fresh way to do it would be to have the second lead be the reincarnated lover, not the main lead (and I'm not sure that will ever happen, Heartbeat might be the closest we ever get to it)

And wasn't "Born again" about that? I do not remember now. FL loved one man in the 80's, another in the present day. But did they "swap faces" with their reincarnations or were they two different people? It was such a confusing drama that apart from the scenes in the snow, I forgot a lot of it.

Some of the reported Korean viewer comments have been scathing about the perceived bad acting of the leads in the eps before the one week break.

Those are good ratings for TSPMC's final two episodes. They gained more viewers while MD lost theirs. Weekend dramas face tough competition.
LYOL had a big jump. I am no longer watching this but I am glad it is doing better. I will wait for weecaps to know what happened that caused the jump.

My Demon bores me to tears. If SBS ever wanted to cut episodes due to low ratings, now would be the time to do it.

@DB-Staff Love Song for Illusion Ep.1 premiered on Tuesday, January 2.

I don't think they will cut anytime soon.

SBS in the past has not hesitated to lower the boom and cut episodes. I still get annoyed when I recall SBS did exactly that to two of their dramas (that I was live watching) that were airing almost simultaneously in 2018: THIRTY BUT SEVENTEEN and YOUR HONOR. Each received 4 episode cuts (announced on the same day iirc). The cuts. really didn’t negatively impact 30B17 but severely hurt YH.
Today however where the ratings landscape is so much different than in 2018 I would be surprised if SBS cut MD episodes because of low ratings.

I have doubts as international viewers will be even more upset.

Did My Demon lose viewers because the couple officially got together which apparently can take away tension in the show?

I think I saw somewhere that Cybil Shepard said she and Bruce Willis didn't date in reality in order to keep that tension alive for their characters.

It frustrates me because 1) Moonlighting's issues weren't due to the couple finally getting together, they were due to other reasons and 2) the couple getting together doesn't have to kill the show's momentum, you just have to find ways to keep things interesting without breaking them up constantly (see Chandler and Monica versus Ross and Rachel)

The Moonlighting curse has killed so many of my favorite shows. I do agree that you can't get the couple together TOO soon, but if you drag it out for too long it also gets boring and frustrating.

Well done SamDalri and Khitan-War. Though these two dramas were not as trending or hyped on, expectations were not as high but they are constantly delivering.

I wonder if Marry my husband will be able to sustain those big opening numbers?

Happy for Parks Marriage, it was a cute and entertaining comedy, and it gave MBC back to back hits.

My Demon has a huge internet following due to its appeal with young people but that isnt translating to actual viewers.

MD is of course doing very well worldwide because of Netflix and Song Kang but these ratings only reflect SK viewership on the channel, hence the seeming disparity between popularity and ratings.

Marry My Husband has obtained 6.4% (3rd episode) and 7.6% (4th episode), and the best part is....the Knetz audience is not complaining.

I would love Tell me that you love me to get higher numbers it’s such an interesting drama.

Welcome to Samdalri is on track to get to 10 before the series finale.

Between him and her is going to face the same fate as Oh! Youngsim and have viewings so low they don’t register.

Between Him and Her is also on Netflix Korea where it seems to be doing okay (but who can tell with Netflix) so it’s possible most of its viewers are watching it there.

The ratings for LIVE YOUR OWN LIFE are finally climbing. Sunday's 19% mark is the highest it has received since the show began. This is still not that high for a weekender, but it is getting there. Credit the fact that the plots are actually moving forward, and we the audience are actually looking forward to next week's episodes with some real anticipation.

THE GORYEO-KHITAN WAR is about where it ought to be.

I would have thought that LIKE FLOWERS IN SAND would be doing better than it is.

I am very perplexed with the poor ratings of My Demon throughout its run so far even if I understand that the low ratings this week may be fuelled by the slow pace of the show. I think the show is very well-written overall and deserves much better.

I am loving the interactions between the leads and their crackling chemistry. I love the way Song Kang looks at her and they are both killing me with their eye acting. So expressive.

Same! And usually the writing gets sloppy when the lead has come together and I find dig into past-life also boring but the last two episodes were really well done in my opinion. The writers keep us guessing about how it will come together at the end which is such a triumph in this genre.

Marry my husband premiered strong, if the pace does not lag they should be able to maintain that rating. It has something that everyone can love a downtrodden female lead finally taking revenge with schadenfreude thrown in. We all have similar fantasies of petty revenge and show might be able to visualize it.

It is not surprise that A good day to be dog is losing is at it's lowest. Its has lost it's marbles.

Weekender is finally picking pace but I don't think it will be able to achieve success of past famous weekenders.

My Demon is doing extremely well internationally, according to Netflix ratings. It is interesting to note this drama appeals to the rest of the world quite significantly.

Marry My Husband premiere episodes earned it's ratings. I just want it to maintain or increase this.

I'm guessing Tell Me That You Love Me is stuck in the 1.5-2.0 ratings loop. Not a complaint. And I'm glad it has kept a hold on it's viewers.

I'm surprised about Love Illusion in Songs' rating. Save for Sajo dad, I couldn't connect with the drama. I'm guessing it'll be in the clear by this week when 2&3 airs.

With LYOL's current momentum, it should hit 20% now that she's taking proper charge of her life.

👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 to Goryeo-Khitan War and Welcome to Samdalri.

I think Love Song in Illusion's rating here was mainly due to curiosity and the male lead's previous work developing a fanbase which may have checked this out.

MARRY MY HUSBAND
You know what…the title actually makes makes sense after watching the premiere episodes. Unlike PMR tho, I don’t want our FL to get revenge but to leave her abusive boyfriend and her toxic ass BFF. I’d rather she live her best life with her new found besties, where they start their own business or something

MY DEMON
I haven’t watched the latest episodes yet but interesting to note that not even p-r-e-t-t-y can increase ratings…

SAMDAL-RI
I’m weirdly enamoured, don’t ask me why because I can’t explain myself but hey at least the ratings for once seem to align with my tastes

I am quite loving Maestra: Strings of Truth. If you like a strong female lead this has it. I am hoping for her to remain true to her convictions and the music is lovely. I quite like My Demon also. The Goryeo-Khitan war is sure keeping my attention in spite of all the war gore. The lead actors are awesome. I am sad that The Story of Parks Marriage Contract is over. It was delightful and I really loved the leads. Kim Se-Young won me over with this one. Like Flowers in Sand has got me coming back too. Overall, its a good start of hopefully a good year for Kdramas. Am gonna binge watch Samdalri!

I am not in a position to say one way or the other but I have had a soft spot for for Song Kang since tvN’s NAVILLERA (2021). I also enjoyed him in the SWEET HOME franchise. FL&W (2022) is the only romantic drama I have seen him in and for me the romantic plot was a failure. He seems to be pigeonholed into romantic dramas.
What I am hoping is that while soon fulfilling his military commitment he puts on a few pounds but more importantly considers non romantic roles after his discharge. Expand his horizons with roles like in NAVILLERA and SWEET HOME. He can look at the careers of Jung Hae-in and Woo Do-hwan for example on actors who mix roles up successfully.

Viewership ratings are provided by two companies in South Korea: Nielsen Korea and TNmS.[213] Originally, Media Service Korea (MSK) was the sole company providing TV viewership ratings using people meter since 1992, but was only limited to Seoul Capital Area.[213][214] In 1998, TNS Media Korea began as a rival company in partnership with Taylor Nelson Sofres (TNS) which extended the service to five major cities; it was officially launched in June 1999 with a more sophisticated viewership rating survey technique.[213] While, in August 1999, AC Nielsen acquired MSK and rebranded it as AC Nielsen Korea and expanded the audience rating survey to the whole country with the aim to increase the credibility of the ratings.[213] In 2005, AC Nielsen Korea signed a merger with AGB Group and AGB Nielsen Media Research was established.[215] AGB Nielsen Media Research merged with KADD Nielsen Media Research in January 2013, and the official name was changed to Nielsen Korea.[213][216]

In 2010, TNS Media Korea was renamed to TNmS (Total National Multimedia Statistics).[217][213] Since late 2018, TNmS stopped providing data to the public through their websites, and instead occasionally releases the ratings through news agencies such as BreakNews.[218]
