News bites: January 8, 2024

Bae Doona, Ryu Seung-beom, Baek Yoon-shik, Lomon, Lee Soo-hyun

  • The thriller Family Planning will be coming to our screens on Coupang Play this year, headlined by Bae Doona (The Silent Sea), Ryu Seung-beom (Moving), Baek Yoon-shik (Vagabond), and Park Solomon (a.k.a. Lomon) (Revenge of Others), as well as model Lee Soo-hyun in her first acting project. With scripts penned by Kim Jung-min (Hush, Suits), filmmakers (and twin brothers) Kim Gok (On the Line) and Kim Sun (On the Line) are co-directing. [News1]

  • Disney+ has lined up The Impossible Heir (previously Royal Loader) on their upcoming schedule, starring Lee Jae-wook (Death’s Game), Jun (a.k.a. Lee Jun-young) (May I Help You), and Hong Su-ju (Sweet Home 2) in a battle for power to take the chaebol throne. Expected to release this February, production is being led by PD Min Yeon-hong (Insider, Missing: The Other Side) and writer Choi Won. [Star News]
  • New character posters have dropped for TVING’s LTNS (a.k.a. Long Time No Sex), getting us up close and personal with Esom (Black Knight) and Ahn Jae-hong’s (Mask Girl) struggles with sex and love in their marriage. Rest assured, they’ll soon be finding some thrills through ~nefarious~ spy activities when the comedy unfolds this month on January 19. [Sports Donga]

  • Lee Sang-yi (My Demon) has been added to the cast of Because I Want No Loss, joining Shin Mina (Our Blues) and Kim Young-dae (Moon in the Day) in the rom-com. Slated to air this year on both tvN and TVING, I’m just hoping that Lee has his own loveline because a rehash of Hometown Cha-Cha-Charsquo;s love triangle would just be cruel. [Sports Kyunghyang]
  • Netflix released a video announcement, teasing the coming return of Gyeongseong Creature with Season 2. Time jumping from 1945 to 2024, the story continues with the first season’s leads, Park Seo-joon (Itaewon Class) and Han So-hee (Soundtrack #1), who will be joined by Lee Moo-saeng (Maestra: Strings of Truth) and Bae Hyun-sung (Miraculous Brothers) in the new season. [News]
  • Over on SBS, new posters have come out for Flex x Cop, giving us another look at the crime-comedy’s clashing partners, Ahn Bo-hyun (See You in My 19th Life) and Park Ji-hyun (Reborn Rich). The series is set to premiere later this month on January 26, taking over the weekend slot following My Demon. [News]

I'm so excited for The Impossible Heir. I love Lee Jae-wook and Lee Jun-young. What are the odds of Hong Su-zu fighting both for the chaebol throne and there not being a love triangle between them?

This is an astonishing amount of diversity in terms of genre! Thriller, chaebol politics, comedy, romcom, horror/action, and crime/action/comedy. We’re only missing doctors and lawyers, but we have both of them coming soon too. I’m excited that there is something here for everyone. Maybe some of it will even be good hahaha!

Ahahaha that's actually so true - this is a rather diverse spread without a lawyer or doctor in sight! I'm sure they'll come soon, though.

Right, that’s the legal show I was thinking of, and then we’ll have Doctor Slump at the end of the month, so they are both definitely represented. It’s rare to have a news bites with so many different things going on though!

I was just going to write Dr Slump and Queen of Divorce.
The more I see of Dr Slump, more I like it. A romcom tackling depression - if done right could be path breaking. If. Done. Right.

@tccolb It's adorbs how you imagine that Lee Sang-yi's gonna get his own loveline in the spotlight, taking the shine off--of all people-- Kim Young-dae...unless the show is about the better actor winning the day. This is, indeed, a cruel world.

If it’s a true rom*com*, all hope is not lost though. *sips a Lawyer Do latte*

Well, true. But that's also been done before with KYD...you know how our writers hate repeating themes across dramas 🤣

Hometown Cha Cha Cha gets a fair bit of flack but I have an affection for it stemming from the fact that it was my second ever KD ( I’ve learnt a lot since then). One thing which makes me pat myself on the back a bit is how quickly I recognised how wonderful LSY was as an actor. There is a particularly poignant scene between Shin Minah’s and Lee Sangyi’s characters where she tells him how important he was to her in university when she was struggling emotionally and financially and how his unwavering support as a senior friend made life a bit easier for her. And, that she liked liked him then but she is carrying a torch (so to say) for someone else now. His character was so lovely and gracious though when he heard this confession about her past feelings.

Lee Sang-yi was perfection of an 2ML--engendering authentically painful SLS--in HomeCha3...he much more engaging and sweet than the ML, IMO.

YAAAAY I'm glad Netflix didn't take too long in announcing a season 2 for Gyeongseong Creature. Literally watching that scene at the end of the first season I was like "dang.. either that's a gutsy writer or pleeease let them already have a sequel planned"

I'm ready to sit on the edge of my seat for some thrills or get some actual cuteness without the angst for our OTP. Or a lot of angst as they struggle against becoming zombie eating vampires. That works too.

He is amazing in villain roles too, but I dislike watching actors being amazing in too many villain roles. I slowly start to dislike them for it.

Me neither. I watched him in a villain role thd first time I saw him, in Class of Lies. I had no previous knowledge of him. Then I watched May I Help You which was truly great. Then I unfortunately watched movie Brave Citizen which had the most misleading synopsis ever. The movie gave me panic attacks for a week, but it was so hypnotizing that I needed to see the end. Yeah. Never again.

Wouldn’t it be amazing if the Lee Jae wook drama had echos of the makjang he was part of in WWW? Then I might watch it. Not sure I can handle chaebol fight otherwise, even for him.

I hear you. He is so gifted but I cannot stand his arrogant and shrieking roles. He just does it so well that I find it disturbing.
