Chief Detective, 1958

Episode 5

Am I still having fun. Well … I’m trying to. It’s an interesting premise, interesting time period in history, everything seems perfect but … perhaps a missing piece, repetitive storyline, low (?) stakes.

Nonetheless I’m still in … for now. 😊🥳

Tbh, for the first time I opted for sleep instead of LJH 🥺

*sigh* sadly can’t you missed much. Your point of him over using his facial muscles is pot on and has now becoming distracting. I was hoping he would settle down. Either the PD is not sure how he should play the character to he has still to get into his groove. Were there any production issues!?

Sadly I think LJH is being somehow professionally lost. He was doing much better being low-key. I guess Taxi Driver brought him the fame he wasn’t prepared for. Were he younger, it would be ok, young actors handle fame well, it’s their land of exploration and “finding” themselves. But LJH’s almost 40 now, he should be firm and more self-conscious of his direction as an actor, like Jo In Sung, Hyun Bin,… There’s not so much the PD can do, I guess. A fine finish product must be a result of both the directing and how the actors interpret their characters.

That is precisely why it is disconcerting. I don’t think anybody does micro expressions better than K-drama actors but here he is as bad as Seo In-guk as the shaman in Cafe Minamdang. 🙈🤷‍♀️

I feel do sad to see brilliant actors who suddenly forget how to act.

@claire2009 Maybe he wants to do something less demanding after Taxi Driver or maybe his agency pushes scripts that are similar to TD. Also some actors would not want to give suggestions to directors because it simply might not be their forte. I find it unfair to compare him to JIS, HB because these guys had a taste of success right from the beginning. There is no other drama in his pipeline and the next one will probably be TD3, so let’s see wait and watch. I want a big name writer like PJE to cast him in a story, so more people can recognize his talent outside of TD.

LJH runs his own agency which used to be a one-man agency where he’s the CEO. Now they manages Lee Donghwi and another actress as well.
I understand it may be inappropriate to compare him to JIS or HB. What I meant is that I wish he could be more calm and nonchalant about everything, be it failure or success. Maybe I read him wrong and all my assumptions are just groundless. So I’ll need to be more patient, I guess.

@claire2009 I did not know about him managing his own projects, so it makes sense that he picked another similar script to TD character. At this rate he’ll end up typecasting himself. I do not think your assumption about his facial muscles is wrong because he is trying to be more comic, and it is not working in certain scenes. He is one of my favourites right from “Tomorrow With You” drama, so I have hopes for his future projects.

In think we can all agree that we love LJH and as Claire pointed out one can make out a “lesser” performance when one has seen so many talented excellent performances by an artist.
I too hope he does really really well in his next project. More importantly he has fun doing it!! 😍

Perhaps this is why I am unable to click play on Ep 4 although I enjoyed the 1st 3 episodes which were light! I don’t see why I need to spend my time on a story that isn’t doing anything different from other dramas.

after 5 i also am feeling the fatigue… so they introduced another element at the end and i’m thinking, “do i care?”

i like the characters and the budding romance and newbie woman cop narrative, but the cases are what i guess i’m not that interested in?

      hmmm….

Hehe … i called out that young girl joining the team from day 1. *pats own back*

While I excused first two episodes as usual drama exaggeration the next two were tragic but you’re so right the fatigue has set in right about now.

I do hope to continue but it is getting difficult to be as excited about it!
