Lee Da-hae: simply tired, or irresponsible actress?

Lee Da-hae has quit East of Eden. Her decision comes without warning, and is so sudden that viewers have been caught completely off-guard and are wondering why.

She posted on the show’s message board on the 22nd, “It was confusing to take on this character of Hye-rin, who even I can’t understand… As an actor in this drama, I feel a duty and responsibility to stay with it through the end. But I’m sorry to tell you I can no longer act in this situation, feeling this way.” She added, “I don’t want to act saying and doing such illogical, out-of-character things in this role that makes me look like an idiot.”

Apparently the production is currently consulting with the writer on how to write her out of the show; Lee will probably appear for a few more episodes. (Who wants to bet that insulting the writer in her goodbye message isn’t the best way to get a glorious send-off?) Her action has spawned a lot of speculation among fans, some who would like to be understanding and others who decry her act as irresponsible and unprofessional.

Hm, I do have sympathy for actors who get stuck in crap work who feel fooled that they are caught in something they had not signed up for. (I also felt for Kim Jung-eun, who attempted to quit the disastrous Princess Lulu, which lost its mind midway through its run.) Then again, maybe Lee just got tired of playing second fiddle when she thought she’d be the queen bee? Perhaps with one lead actress gone, the drama will forgo its rumored extension; then again, maybe Song Seung-heon and Lee Yeon-hee ‘shippers will get what they want with a lovers’ reunion (or so I gather from all the, uh, vociferous comments in that vein).

It’s too bad, though; I don’t think this helps any regarding Lee Da-hae’s budding prima donna reputation.

Go LDH...get out of there...I never understood her role in this whole drama. The only reason I watched the drama was because of her. Thank God she got out before this drama brought her down. Now I have no reason to watch this drama. I will wait till it's done and watch the ending to see if the bad guy gets what he deserves but doesn't look like that ending will happen either. I think the author got trap in developing too many characters that he/she lost herself in the mess as well.

FIGHTING LDH!!!! YOU ARE A HIGH CLASS ACTRESS, NOT SOME BIMBO LIKE THE AUTHOR MADE YOUR CHARACTER OUT TO BE. THE MOVIE PRODUCTION SHOULD BE PROUD YOU ACTED SO WELL FOR NOT EVEN KNOWING WHAT THE HECK YOUR CHARACTER IS ABOUT. WE ARE ALL AS LOST AS YOU LDH.....

To all haters who talk about contact, dah dah and how she should stick with it....IT'S OKAY THAT YOU GUYS DON'T HAVE STANDARDS FOR YOURSELF SINCE YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND WHAT STANDARDS MEAN BUT I'M SO PROUD OF LDH FOR HAVING STANDARDS FOR HERSELF AS A WONDERFUL ACTRESS....

I think you guys should not blame on MBC management!. drama is realy mean drama, HJH once said that this drama is very interesting, becuase no one would know what happen next , so i would assumed that all fall in the hand of puplic viewer, back to the drama, i think at first MBC would like to put main lead in the hand of LDH, but as the story go it half way, she did not show her talent or chemistry with both DC, DW, she did not win the crown, instead, LYH as Yong Ran, she act out as every mins is her last mins on creen , that made her won the crown.

So back to LDH, what i see as professional acctress, she should not quilt the show, the only way that she should do is stay on the drama and show to other that she have got talent. and acting like a professional actor, responsible. that will better for her reputation. What she doing now is ridiculous, childish.

LDH didn't just make this decision overnight, there are reasons that we the public will never know. Based on her hard work and dedication to previous dramas, this decision must have been really hard for her to make. Unfortunately, her role that she signed up for...was never developed, it was meaningless, whether she's in EOE really doesn't make a difference and that is really sad even the audience to see that too. Anyway someone mentioned actors who had it bad didn't pull out etc. well, those actor's characters are actually PART of the plot and there are character developments; whereas LDH''s character was just Blah. I commend her for her courage to pulled out. She knows the consequences, so all the best luck to her.

Truelove- her role in the drama was even less relevant during the first parts so saying she didn't show chemistry or enough to show her talent is the reason she got pushed back is completely false. she didn't have a very important role, period.

MBC apparently claims the reason for her lack of screentime is bec. of her deteriorating health. hm.

About East of Eden:

Like I said last month, even though the show was generating high ratings, there were a steady stream of complaints coming about the story, actings, pairings, and so on. Moreover, there were rumors that certain actors were unhappy with the direction of the script. It's also clear now that the issues with those actors -- and not budget -- is the principal reason why MBC hadn't declared an extension. The "without warning" sounds bogus; the writers knew, and it's now obvious with a recent plot development they were preparing to resurrect the LDC/YR pairing

The core problem is obvious in the current situation: Lee Dong Chul and Lee Dong Wook still exist in mostly separate storylines. It's a little bit like watching two different dramas where the principal villain *happens* to be named Shin Tae Hwan. Because Lee Dong Chul is not really integrated into the revenge storyline, that means Lee Dong Chul's storyline (i.e. the romance with him and Min Hye Rin) competes with the revenge plot, which is the core East of Eden story. Now that the secrets are spilling out, there's just no way to give LDC/MHR the same development time that LDC/YR got. And if LDC and LDW do not converge, that renders MHR's importance in the storyline as 3rd or 4th among the main female characters.

The thing that most surprised me about the early East of Eden plot was that they made Han Ji Hye's Ji Hyun a prominent character. Han Ji Hye was a late, late addition to the cast, and I thought that originally Ji Hyun was going to be killed off early in the story. I think Ji Hyun's rise in status started to interfere with the setup for Min Hye Rin.

Anyhoo . . . this just about guarantees Lee Dong Chul and Young Ran will be riding off in a boat in Macau. LDC/YR F!T!W! :D

But . . .

The more interesting twist: will Lee Dong Wook and Ji Hyun -- truly the heaviest relationship in the drama -- get back together?

"Anyone following the current daily drama You Are My Destiny (featuring Im Yoona) can sympathise with cast and loyal audience members suffering through the abyss that can consume everything in it’s wake due to script problems and shoddy writing."

Yeah, You are My Destiny is easily the worse written KBS daily drama I've seen in years. I mean, damn, it's just flat out sloppy writing. And yet, the whole storyline between Yuri and Taepung is just about the funniest I've seen all year. You can just tell Lee Ji Hoon's just wincing at the incredible heights of idiocy he has to endure for his character.

MBC, KBS .... they the same in making profit ways. what make increase profit, they increase (like drama with high rate, more likely extension, gains more Commercial ad,), less interesting to puplic, they will decrease as low as they can. as what i say before, they put LDH as main lead but turn out LYH,
That why celebrities alway said that to stay alive in entertainment circle is realy hard, actualy

i also say irresponsible and unprofessional. it's just so unprofessional to leave at this point in the drama when it's like 75% of the way finished and her relationship with song seung hoon's character actually looks like it's going somewhere. if she wanted to quit, she should have done so earlier when losing her wouldn't have been as costly to the plot as it is now. i feel like her reason for leaving the drama because she can't relate to the character is kind of O.O because i don't feel like hyerin has really changed significantly personality wise, meaning that if lee da hae was able to understand hyerin then, she should still be able to understand hyerin now. however, i can see/understand her wanting to leave because her character never got her time to shine. yet, i feel like she's leaving at the moment that the writer was giving hyerin her "time to shine." honestly, i feel like it's hard for writer's to really promise actors and actresses anything when the writer(s) themselves don't know where the plot is heading. but it kind of sucks if you're an actress who expected her character to be the main lead. yet, once you sign yourself to a drama, it's kind of crappy of you to just leave the drama before it ends. it's just kind of selfish. wow, i rambled, sorry.

on a somewhat related note, i can see why some of the actors were upset with the direction of the plot. however, what did they expect from a 50 episode [1 hour per episode] drama that only had like 2-3 episodes on the childhood of the main characters. that leaves you with 40+ episodes to drag out something that could be explained sufficiently in about half those number of episodes.

anyways, i'm happy, in a way, about lee da hae's leaving east of eden. shocked, but happy. shocked because it's so late into the drama for her to be peacing out. happy because i've been dying for a young-ran and dong-chul reunion, which is still plausible in the current plot.

aye aye to javabeans! no matter how gyped you feel about getting a role and it doesn't turn out what to be what you expected, you still owe it to your fans and your professionalism as an actress to STICK IT OUT.

yes, MBC has completely ruined the impact her role has on the drama, but she really should have just grin and beared it. she's already in the drama. finish what you start, and think not of the past but of the future. she should have remembered that in the future there will be plenty of dramas that she can show her potential. but now... she has brought upon herself the dreaded label of being 'unprofessional.' period.

@charitee,

"on a somewhat related note, i can see why some of the actors were upset with the direction of the plot. however, what did they expect from a 50 episode [1 hour per episode] drama that only had like 2-3 episodes on the childhood of the main characters. that leaves you with 40+ episodes to drag out something that could be explained sufficiently in about half those number of episodes."

For one thing, the developments that occurred in Episode 31 (i.e. the "truth") were supposed to happen around Episode 25 (i.e. the mid-way point of the story.) However, probably with the intent to extend the show, they more or less added a mini-story arc for LDC/YR (aka "when a trashman loves a mental patient.")

Reading between the lines, it sounds like Lee Dae Hae was an important reason why the show had not been extended. Due to the grueling shoot with likely lots of last minute rewrites and plot redirects, she probably didn't think it was worth going past the original 50 episode target. And she probably wasn't happy about taking another paycut for the show. But when she leaves the show, that creates a vacuum where the story has to find a female lead that will fit in the struggle. Young Ran and Ji Hyun are currently too partisan to do that, and so they have to quickly rewrite their storylines so that either one takes over for Min Hye Rin.

It's kind of a shame though, because the main cast will enjoy career boosts for their efforts on this show. In the end, it was going to be worth it.

I guess this is what happens when you cast so many big “egos” in a super long drama.

@ Ooops... , fans who followed EOE avidly understand why she is leaving, she owed it to her fans and herself to portrayed a character she was signed up for. There are a lot of fans supporting LDH, even some non-fans who have been following EOE. Even though not a fan of hers, I watched EOE every week and can totally understand why she is leaving. This isn't just about professionalism or she's getting paid big bucks...think why would someone getting such big bucks be leaving if there wasn't other issues? Again I commend her for being brave and true to herself, she knows this could possibly be a career sucide but felt strongly enough to risk it.

The thing is LDH will probably be in EoE until about episode 40 so why not stick around for the last 10?

Quitting so close to the end is going to get her slapped with the unprofessional label no matter what antics the powers that be have been up to.

Unless she's in some life or death health crisis, nth is 'understandable' or a viable excuse. Many many many actresses and artists worked thro difficult projects with IVs dangling, in and out of hospitals...I'm not saying they should, my heart goes out to them...but, c'est la vie. No matter the reasoning and how long she's been on the fence to come to this decision, it's still unprofessional. Even if she's sorry, taking the blame, it's still adamantly irresponsible. It's a job that she's paid to do, things happend, she should have some idea at the back of her head signing up on the premise of this drama that it is not going to be a one girl show for her to 'shine' with such emphasis on the bros and revenge *yawn*. The plot has always sounded super 'familiar' (imo insanely cliched) and will drag 49 hours out of the 50 and it's proven it really is so, I really dunno what she's expecting. Esp if the underlying reason is she is having too less screentime, there r 15 eps left or so, 3, 4 min each...just brave it thro an hour or 2 of well-paid work, girlfriend. As for any parallels with her situation with like being on a job u didnt sign up for...then she should quit the business for good. This is brutal and hardwork and the showbiz world certainly doesnt revolve around a still up and coming actress.

I've given up on LDH as a serious actress to be frank(even before EoE), I like her better in her pre MG days honestly. I still like her in MG though i think the drama is overrated....but she's been too conscious of herself or her huge stardom to immerse in her roles or even think of improving her skills ever since.

MBC fooled us right from the beginning. Esp LDH fans. At episode 35 and the plot is still static if not pitiful. I've stop watching at ep 31 when there is no development in the LDC-HR-LDW love triangle.

Don't say LDH unprofessional. It's MBC who is not honourable.

LDH, you are right in quitting this drama which has taken a turn for the worse. Nothing extraordinary with EOE. It's just promotional bullshit in the first place.

I wasnt watching EoE so I have no opinion on the quality of the show or LDH's role. However, I think the most important thing now is how LDH's management handles this mess - whether this move was irresponsible or necessary, there is going to be fallout. And while its clear, just from these comments, that LDH has a lot of avid supporters who may help her survive this period, fans are not responsible for making casting decisions. Her management needs to be a) honest - if she was truly not sick, then lying about it will only further alienate MBC and others b) conciliatory - they need to make it clear to those in control of producing/writing/directing/casting dramas and movies what drove LDH to this decision (without trashtalking anyone) and why this would never happen again. The controversy can't be avoided, but it can be managed.

And they should definitely be more concerned about how this will affect relationships within the industry than how the netizens/media are reacting. Fans have short memories - I doubt the industry is as forgiving.

i also like her better in GR n MG days.. it looks like she has become prideful after her huge success.. i know (i watched EoE) HR's character is under develop, but ethically, she should just stay and hold on to the end, especially there's only 10 episodes left and the drama will focused her more in the next episodes... quitting like this is very irresponsible. and i'm sorry, i know it doesn't so nice, but it makes u looks like a loser. she shoulnt do this.. although i'm not her fan, it's nice to have her in Kcelebs..

Also, knowing about this now kinda wrecks the illusion of reality with East of Eden. It makes you really self-conscious watching the show up to episode 40, because you're now looking at how the show will write Min Hye Rin out, and whether the story will skid off the tracks to Episode 50. Also, any restart of LDC/YR or LDW/JH kinda looks like Plan B tactic, whether the writers intended that direction all along or not.

it'll be interesting how the ratings go the next 2 weeks. And uhhh . . . Lee Dae Hae's departure is timed to the debut of Boys over Flowers. There ya go!!

i know, i pity her too.. but i dont think MBC cheated her or fooled us.. the drama team may/will always change script and storyline as the story goes regarding the feed back they got. especially for a huge drama. it also happened in jdrama and even the manggaka do this too.
if she is a good or A list actress she can portray MHR beautifully and proudly even without the love triangle or she end up with anyone..life partner in a drama is so not important, espclly THIS DRAMA. EoE is clearly not a love drama, but family and revenge drama. moreover, MHR is the most beautiful character among the 3 woman. she is intelligent and strong.

YESSS, Boys Over Flower here I come~
MBC fooled me with their false advertising of DC-HR-DW and I have been following East of Eden every week waiting for it to happen, but it's just not happening.
HR isn't even included in the plot which makes me disappointed, so the writer can wrap up this HR character easily without effecting the plot much. But please don't kill off HR like Mike...

I'm sad to not see LDH much in the next few years since she's going back to Uni to get her degree.

Unni please get lots of rest and stay healthy.

I'm hoping that Boys Over Flower would effect East of Eden's rating and make EOE's rating go down. Since EOE are for ajummas and BOF is targeted at mainly teenagers and up~

I'm a huge Hana Yori Dango fan! Read the manga, and watched both Japan (GREAT) and Taiwan version (not good, stopped at ep 1), so really looking forward to the Korean version. ^^

this is something that I have always disliked... why does the korean industry don't write all of the script ahead of the shooting and airing :(
it's so crazy... when the actors/actresses sign for a project, what they sign for isn't even the complete script... they see description of the characters they are supposed to play w some promises from the writers that their role will count... they don't know how the writers will develop their characters or the events... which sucks really, cause if the station and the writers found some of the fans excited about something, they just change the script w/out even taking the approval of the cast... I think the best thing is to write all of the script (all of it... from the 1st episode to the last episode) and then you can sign the contract w/ actors/actresses... and don't (under any circumstances) change the script of the characters depending on the fans reactions... cause this is pathetic really :(

and I read somewhere that SSH told the writers to cancel the love line between him and LDH in the drama, because he doesn't wanna appear in front of his fans as the man who's not devoted only for one woman in his life!! is he really this unprofessional ?!
I praise LDH for her decision... such a brave and wonderful girl she is, and a terrific actress as well...

I may sound biased, but I noticed this in most of MBC's dramas... this station to me is a blood-sucker (sorry)... whenever they find the ratings are soaring, they decide to extend the drama... doesn't matter if the script will suck or not, they just do it for more profit... I think they have been delaying the development of HR's character expecting an extension... but HELLO... not all people have to put up w/ this... I may sound mean, but I'm also crossing my fingers for BOF to beat EOE in the ratings... I mean beat it really hard... and also for Terroir... that alone would make MBC knows that people are not just puppets you can control :(
LDH fighting... don't worry honey... we all will support you ;-)

i think it sucks all around - while i don't necessarily agree with LDH dropping the drama (it's unprofessional no matter how you look at it - if she was under so much stress, she could have asked for a break, no?), she must have had her reasons. as people have said before, MBC is also to blame for this, especially if they weren't upfront about her role. & it's not like she didn't try - i don't watch the drama, but she's in for 30 out of 40 episodes, right? so no light at the end of the tunnel for her character i guess, but at the same time, if she made it that far, maybe she should have just stuck it out & then conveniently forget about the whole thing & learn for future roles. i suppose this is one of those instances where the general public will never really know what happened & can only speculate. i have to give her kudos for owning up to her own unprofessionalism though. she's willing to admit to how bad this all looks for her reputation, & take the consequences, so i wish her the best of luck.

i'm not gonna lie, i don't follow EOE anymore, because it bored me to tears. But whether or not MBC gave LDH a great character, her quitting does make her look a bit prima donna-ish. Because while to some fans of the show, it's justified, on the outside (and even to a lot of people who DO follow EOE) she just looks like she couldn't get over herself and accept that she's not always going to be the leading character in her dramas. Which is really childish, and is probably going to hurt her career, because now PDs are gonna think twice about casting her, since there's no guarantee that she won't do it again.

i couldn't care less if LDH remains on EOE or not but I'm a viewer that is here to watch the EOE and not just LDH. I think it was really unnecessary for her to drop out like this. She says that she doesn't understand her character but as an actress isn't that her job? I think that a lot of producers will think twice before hiring LDH for a role (if i was a producer, i would). Now that LDH finally has time off, I suggest she goes and eats something. I think she looks terribly skinny in the picture.

Although I don't agree with her actions, I can understand why she chose to quit EOE. I'm an LDH fan so I'm obviously going to side with her. She's the "lead actress" and yet she never really gets any screen time. Her character's under developed and us LDH fans have been waiting and waiting for her character's relationship with SSH since episode 1. Yet, all they're giving us is them talking or looking at each other. Honestly, its a shame that she's quiting. I happen to enjoy EOE. LDH was one of the main reasons why I chose to start this drama and I'm going to miss her being in it even if she was never on screen. It's not gonna be that hard to kill her off considering they haven't really used her in the last 30 something episodes. It might throw their plans off a bit but i'm sure they'll recover from it. Its unfortunate that EOE Is going through one obstacle after another. First their writer got sick and had to be replaced and now LDH's decision to leave. Hopefully the drama doesn't go down hill after this,

but anyhow, maybe this is a lesson for her fan who were always stuck up. i cant stand them when i read in forum. eventhough i'm actually not DCYR shipper, i suddenly feel happy for them. oh yeah, LDH's stuckup fans have to eat back their words!~ haha :D

From how I see it, I think the end result is that Lee Da Hae and MBC are both in the wrong in terms of professionalism, no? MBC clearly didn't comply to what they stated about LDH's role (although I don't believe that was legally written in her contract... or was it?) and LDH shouldn't have dropped out of the drama so late in the filming process, no matter how poorly written her character is (and her character is honestly very poorly written). I feel like from the very beginning, EOE should've just focused more on the revenge and the relationship between Dong Chul and Dong Wook rather than emphasizing so much on the love relationships, or at least that's what I assumed from when I first heard about the drama. Plus, MBC shouldn't have listed such careful descriptions of each character to begin with because then it puts even greater expectations on them to fulfill those descriptions. It's better to be slightly vague in detailing each character in order to surprise fans as well as evolve the characters to the production team/writer's choosing, in my opinion.

@98: I can understand if you label an actress as "stuck up" but how is it possible for you to label her fans that as well? Have you met all of the LDH fans in the world? Do you know any of them personally? That's exactly like saying "all black people are stupid" or "all asians are chinky" Such statements only make you seem ignorant.

We can blame her for being irresponsible all we want but theres things behind the camera that we just don't understand.
