Can I wish its Wednesday instead of Friday? How will I wait for ep 11 and 12 of YB?
Oh Friday, how I wish you had come sooner.
I had a doctors appointment yesterday and got a flu shot which was the only plus, cause now I need to get a blood test.
Somehow, I am still watching LY1000x. Its not an amazing drama…but its addictive. The melodrama aspect is annoying, but I am still watching. How the hell is this possible?
I’m also waiting impatiently for the next two eps of Assorted Gems. Now that is a drama that I know why I’m watching it. I hope it doesn’t have a sucky ending, like some 50+ ep dramas tend to have. They had better get together (both pairs).
Hope everyone has a good weekend!
I am very happy that i just made 1 of my friend become a YAB addict.
the problem is the torture of waiting for episode 11 and 12 of YAB…
Thursday is the new Friday (watch YAB! read YAB!). Like the above commenters, how am i going to survive till the next Thursday comes?
I brought this up late in last week’s Open Thread, but I wanted to give all y’all a last minute shot at this: http://iamkoream.com/the-koream-drama-fo-yo-mama-contest/
The deadline is this Sunday. You don’t have to be kor-american, all you have to be is someone who loves Korean dramas!
What this is: a contest to film and upload onto youtube, your very own 3 min k-drama scene. Must be in English, must be your own content. Post on youtube- submit your entry by uploading a video response to this vid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l0L5xMXcN-M
The top 10 videos will be posted, then three finalists (two that receive that the most votes and one that editors pick) will win two tickets to KoreAm’s exclusive celebrity-studded gala “Unforgettable” in Los Angeles. One winner will take home a round-trip ticket to Korea from Asiana Airlines and a Verizon Wireless phone.
(I am guessing we’ll see at least a half-dozen parodies of You’re Beautiful… hehe)
Hey y’all, Happy OT Friday! Hope everyone’s had a great week and has lots to talk about today. What’s everyone watching, besides the obvious?
I’m watching YB, Friend, Our Legend and Autumn Concerto. At hjkomo’s recommendation, I think I’m going to tackle Eight Days this weekend, followed by Conspiracy in the Court.
I’m leaving dreamworld tomorrow (shocking, I know) and going out to lunch with my sisters then doing some Christmas shopping. Surely I can survive 5-6 hours away from my laptop, right? Yeah…I have my doubts too.
Patiently waiting for ockoala to come on with her Most Excellent Gossip….
whatintheactualfff? Lee Da Hae and Kang Ji Hwan went to Thailand together??? WHAT?
I can hear all the MINE MINE MINE everywhere.
I need more YAB in my life.
I just realized that sometimes 4 days can seem like 4 years:-)The weekend is almost half over in my part of the world.Just another lazy weekend.Realised that watching YAB can have a detrimental effect on real life cause it raises expectations of qualities in a ‘perfect’ guy to nearly impossible to achieve proportions.:-) Oh well one can always hope;-)Hope to catch up on the movie ‘The Itaewon Murder Case’ if I find it with subs somewhere.
Happy Friday ppl:-)
And JB -Nice lazy song to end a lazy weekend:-)Feel like curling up on a couch with a book:-)
Autumn’s Concerto <3
Happy Friday everyone!!! This week had actually kind of flown by. Weird. But it’s actually been pretty enjoyable. YB eps 9 and 10 were just amazing. I cannot wait for Heyi to get her due haha. Plus with the release of two 2PM songs, Big Bang’s Hallelujah and Koe Wo Kikasete, it’s just been a good week musically for me ha.
Can’t wait to just relax and rewatch YB and catch up on IRIS. I also gotta pick MNIKSS up again.
Oh, has anyone watched Samurai High with Miura Haruma? I like him so I was thinking about it, but don’t know if it’s any good.
It’s Friday I’m in love!
I had this song in my head since yesterday…after having my dose of YAB!
I too have been stuck to my laptop, and to alleviate the anticipation, I have been watching anime (being an ajummah, I have not watched animes since my younger days, but I feel young again thanks to YAB). I don’t know why I don’t remember hearing about Miazaki’s Howl’s Moving Castle, but I just watched it this week, and it was great! Also watched a series called Haku Shaku to Yousei, which was cute. And this weekend Smile You will be airing, so, waiting for YAB is not too agonizing!
Happy Weekend!
oh another Autumn’s Concerto fan! I love that drama so much! even though it’s built on cliches… Ady is just so amazing in it!
I completely forgot it was Friday today! It’s been such a short week.,
The first snow came yesterday, it snowed for a whole day and the ground got covered in white snow, perfect to make snowballs from. Oh how I love winter!
I sent away my YAB fan photo today. It was really silly, but I did not have more time to think of something more creative *ashamed* Did anyone of you send photos?
@langdon813 Right now I’m watching, apart from the obvious YAB & IRIS, Assorted Gems, Otomen (JDrama), Swallow the Sun and TBD&W. I was going to finish Hon, but horror is right only in summer, on darker evenings it’s too scary xP
Have a happy Friday everyone! <3
Happy Friday
Javabeans…you are one amazing dudette. Seriously…I’ve been reading since the Coffee Prince days and am so addicted to reading your witty, intellectual and insightful writing. You already know this, but I just wanted to put it out there
The weather around the Seattle area is awful. It was pouring buckets yesterday and will probably continue this waterfall fest until next week.
Happy Weekend, everyone!
It’s all your fault DB, I normally have a rule to not start any drama till the entire show is done. Unfortunately, I broke that rule this week and started YAB. : (
AHH the torture of waiting for the next episode is excruciating!!
Happy Friday everyone! This week’s been rough, so I’m glad it’s almost time for the weekend.
@langdon813
Yay! for starting Conspiracy! Please let us know what you think! 8 Days is also on my list to watch, maybe over winter break. I’ve been debating on whether I should do an independent study course in the History department just to write a paper on the depiction of Emperor Jeongju in recent kdramas versus how he really is depicted in history. That would give me the excuse to watch 8 days and I think Painter in the Wind as well. Watching dramas for a class would be fun (:
I’m watching YAB of course and then Smile, You (though I do fast-forward through the parents’ parts). I watched the first two episode of Tokyo Dogs, and it was interesting. I was expecting a melodrama, but it’s much lighter than I thought. Stylistically it took a bit getting used to in the first episode, but now I kind of like the setup. But wow…Oguri Shun…the best way to say it is “When did he become so manly?” When he does act well, he does such a great job. I love the quirkiness of his character. But I’ll probably wait to continue after it’s somewhat finished. YAB is keeping me busy enough right now! I think I have replayed the ending just to hear the line TK shouts in the dark and look b/t TK and MN. PSH and JGS are awesome as GMN and HTK!
@5, samsooki
How much fun would that be to do, seriously? I’m too anal to come up with something in such a short amount of time but if they made this an annual thing…look out! Many of my friends are big in our local theater scene so I bet they would get a huge kick out of helping me with this.
@7, ajay
What the hey? Details please!
Forgot to mention the song, great choice JB!
All ye patient bosom drama buddies of mine, I have come bearing ridiculous news:
Accordinging to the World Journal, quoting Japan’s Newsen Sports News (don’t ask me why it’s this source): On December 17, 2009, Lee Byung-hun, Jang Dong-gun, Song Seung-hun, and Won Bin will be performing 2 back-to-back concerts at the Tokyo Dome. Performances include showing a short film by the director of April Snow, and the guys will sing, act in short plays/monologues, and participate in interviews.
According to the news, apparently these 4 are good friends, and have discussed doing something like this before (see my mock discussion below), and now they’ve set a date.
LBH: Yo, little bros of mine, how’s it going these days? I’m sure all of you ran out and watched the first showing of G.I. Joe in Korea. I’ll be more than happy to give you English lessons so you, too, can be cast in a major Hollywood blockbuster and have half your face covered the entire time.
JDG: Eh, no thanks, hyung, I’m about to star as the President of Korea, I think I’m set. Plus, pecs and ninja swords aren’t exactly my thing. You may want to extend your offer to Rain?
SSH: Rain’s got some ninja movie coming out soon, he’s got one foot in the door already. I hear that they are casting for Kato, I wouldn’t mind lessons, I heard that Kwan Sang-woo was in the running…..oh, it’s been cast already with a Taiwanese idol, next time then. I’ve worked on my pecs for EoE and it’s ready for prime time.
WB: Sigh, I’m so bored, UNICEF work is only a few times a year, not much going on now that I’ve wrapped Mother. Oh, but I am working on growing a kick-ass mane of hair.
LBH: Well, my return to TV vehicle IRIS is airing soon, and once it wraps, I’m looking for something cool to do.
JDG: Yeah, me, too, maybe something in Japan, my GF would love to go with me.
SSH: I hope the obasans have not forgotten about me, EoE is not exactly Japanese obasan catnip, plus, that Kim Bum may steal my thunder over there.
WB: Yawn, I’m up for whatever…..
LBH: Hey, how about we 4 getoegther and put on a concert/performance in Tokyo? We can get really drunk beforehand, the performance will be a hoot, and we’ll make off like rich bandits. It’s easier than opening up a series of men’s boutiques like Jung Woo-sung and Lee Jung-jae did. Oh, and don’t tell JWS and LJJ about this, okay. I’m still kinda miffed that JWS stole a bit of my thunder in TGTBTW with his annihilate the entire Japanese on horseback with a rifle sequence. Formerly my #1 fan ockoala is now completely obsessed with JWS. Speaking of which, I’m going to convince SYJ to make a Moment to Remember 2: She Remembers!, with me as her memory therapist. Good plot, huh?
JDG, SSH, WB: Okay, hyung, we’re in! Don’t forget to bring the soju and a Korean-Japanese dictionary.
The End.
P.S. Regardless of the veracity of this project, I’m tempted for sure, I mean, 4 Hallyu kings in one dome. If they replaced JDG with Jung Woo-sung, I’d be booking my ticket to Tokyo THIS VERY SECOND. Alas, some Japanese obasans are going to be very very happy Christmas is coming early for them.
@ockoala, or anyone else who knows:
Do the Hallyu kings know how to sing? Never heard any of them singing.
I’m starting to feel bad for Smile, You, and wonder if I should drop it until after YAB is done. Smile is a decently solid drama; the leads have great chemistry and it makes me laugh. It’s cliched, and the older generation makes me cringe, but Smile is better than a number of dramas I’ve watched this year.
And yet, it’s not getting the attention from me it deserves because of YAB, which has COMPLETELY taken over my brain. I’m so excited for Wednesday and Thursday that I can’t be excited for Saturday and Sunday, if that makes any sense. I’m just too focused on getting through the weekend to enjoy weekend dramas.
@ giddygirl108
You’re not enjoying the weather?
I particularly loved being woken at 6:00 this morning by a HUGE thunder right above my house.
@ kaynn
Oh, LBH sings all right. But he’ll only sing for the Japanese obasans
Actually, LBH has released albums before.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P0V9-wZySmo
I’ve also seen videos of SSH singing, and I’m pretty sure JDG and WB can sing if they wanted to. They are kings of Korean cinema, they can do anything.
@19, ockoala
Interesting! If it were JWS I would go with you, rest assured, although you really had me at LBH and WB. I guess we can hope this will end up on YT at some point. That is a good pic of SSH (aka the Korean Cylon).
Look how many acronyms I used in this post! OMG! LOL!
Speaking of concerts, I’m so bummed that Rain is only coming to the US December 24 and 25th. I was really hoping he would come sometime next year, because then I might have a shot at seeing him. But Christmas? That sucks.
@ 11 – YABaddict
I also love Howl’s Moving castle! Have you watched the Skip Beat anime? I think you’d really enjoy it if you’re looking for something to pass time. It kind of reminds me of YaB, not in storyline but the aspects of BTS of dramaland.
You can watch it here: http://www.crunchyroll.com/library/Skip_Beat!
Hey peeps:
Help me out, this is kinda bothering me: Are you using the acronym YB or YAB when discussing You’re Beautiful. I’m using YB (why? well, I refer to any drama by what JB refers to it, and she calls the drama You’re Beatiful, not You Are Beautiful), but is YAB the majority choice? if so, I’ll happily defer.
@ langdon-unni
I pulled the link to the article cuz it had a gazillion lines of web address, but yes, that is a mighty fine SSH chiseled robot there. As for going, man, we should go, if true, this is a collection of four men on one stage the likes of which we’re probably never going to see again.
I forgot it was Friday when I came to this site and had refresh my screen and realized it is(my job is not 9-5 office type for those of you wondering how I can forget)… It’s a bit scary what YB addiction can do to your brain.
@6 langdon813
I’m planning on watching Conspiracy in the Court as well just so that I can get away from my obsession with YB… Iris, I’d loved to watch but at this moment, all the episodes are sitting in my hard drive for subs to to come out and then, I must figure out how make it work to have subbs on… That’s the minus part of watching K drama, I eeed sub titles for sure…
Otherwise, I’m watching Tokyodogs, Jin(The story follows a brain surgeon named, Minakata Jin, who falls into a “time slip” that sends him back to Edo during the Bakumatsu era, the period that spelled the end of the shoguns’ rule over Japan. There, Jin ends up using his 21st-century medical expertise to help the people and so on). I wasn’t planning on watching it but now I’m hooked. And all other weekly J-dramas when I’m not working…
I’m working on this coming Sunday, a trip to japan, planning on getting all the groceries there…
Autumn’s Concerto? is it a K drama? I should look for that as well, thank you.
Oh , and some people were talking about “Pig rabbit” on some other thread, I’d love to have one myself as a companion to my MINKISS pig… and I’m a total grown up… Who would have thought I’d be wishing for another stuffed fluffy thing at this late? in my life?
Anyway, JB, you are like a K drama angel! Thank you for providing this site for all of us to come to.
Have fun weekends everyone!
@YABaddict
I also love Howl’s Moving castle! If you want another anime to watch check out Skip Beat. Reminds me of You’re Beautiful in it’s hilarity and behind the scenes aspects (except this deals with Dramaland) I think you’d enjoy it alot.
Happy Friday, everyone!
I’m just ecstatic coz Kim Myung Min won the Best Lead Actor at the Daejong Awards!
It’s actually his first major award in the film industry: http://mmi.myungmininternational.com/node/499
And his first for the very challenging role in Closer to Heaven:
http://mmi.myungmininternational.com/node/498
He totally deserves it! Yay!
For the first time, he also received the Netizen’s Choice/Popularity Award
Thanks to the Korean fans! Yohoo!
And contrary to rumors, KMM is not confined in the hospital. In fact he’s recuperating overseas…with his family
OK, given the plentitude of k-drama, k-pop culture allusions in YAB… here’s what I’d like to see:
Outside the auditorium, TK yanks MN away from SW and spirits her off in the car, parks by the river (by the lit-up bridge where everyone seems to go, presumably), and reminds her that since he agreed to take responsibility for her, he makes the decisions about what’s best for every little bit of her. She looks both exhausted and apprehensive. Then he suggests she have a little nap and lowers the seat back for her. Her self-protective gesture amuses him and he asks if she’s disappointed. She’s confused, and says, haltingly, “This is how I sleep. I’m a girl, so I sleep prettily like this.” He laughs and reminds her they’ve been sharing a room and he knows full well what a mess she looks like when she sleeps. She asks if he’s making fun of her because she made a mistake trying to be honest, is he really going to be so petty? If that’s the problem, okay, she will take the blame, “You can be scold me if you want, I deserve it for all the problems I cause for you.” But TK laughs (well, maybe smirks) and she asks him why. “I can’t scold you when you’re a girl, you’re too cute”.
Then leans over her and says “Does a cross-dressing former novice nun slap a man if he kisses her?” Darts in for a little peck on the lips, and retreats. She’s stunned. TK proffers his cheek for a slap… which doesn’t come. “Not enough to get slapped? … Now I’m going to do something that could get me slapped.”
I think we all know what happens next.
Would be a nice touch, eh?
@ gallivanter – HAHA ya it’s sad when i’m more excited about Wed and Thurs than i am about my beloved weekends. I can’t even say ‘oh i’ll just wait till my weekend to watch’ because i CAN’T. literally the second i get home i am watching YB raw. it has literally taken over my life midweek he he
@14 giddygirl108 – i need some rain. well, socal needs some rain. i actually REALLY miss it!! i just feel that the world is cleaner after a good storm
i’ll even put up with driving with crappy drivers who don’t know how to drive in the rain if only we could get more than a sprinkle out of the clouds that float around above us. My perfect weekend would include a nice steady rain throughout while i’m curled up in bed watching dramas on my laptop and some peppermint hot chocolate from Roger’s Gardens.. i love winter
@10lovenyc52, I’ve watched the first 3 episodes of Samurai High… was ok, but not compulsive watching like Orthros No Inu in the summer, the autumn jdoramas don’t seem to have anything captivating on offer. Might try Tokyo Dogs, but not really into that cop thingey.
I’m looking for something to watch which waiting for YB and I’m trying to choose between the below (am also watching Buzzer Beat now), would be great if I could get recommendations!
1) City Hall
2) Slingshot/Story of a Man
3) Tamra Island
4) Hong Gil Dong (only for JGS) *blush*
Any thoughts?
@ockoala
I used YB, because dramabeans and withs2 used You’re Beautiful, but then it looked like the majority is using YAB, so I changed to YAB because I take no initiative and I like to follow the crowd. XD Be unique and use YB!
@ 27 reluctantbutaddicted
I LOVE YOU! Best fan prediction for the continuation of YB episode 10 ever!!! And also, City Hall ended up being mention in the YB episode 10 recaps comment section (I didn’t start it, but heck, once it’s been thrown out there, it’s fair game).
@ Fran – it depends on your mood, what do you feel like these days?
1) City Hall – my vote (but I’m a Haller so admittedly biased) – has the most mature and complete love story and best (happiest feeling) ending ever.
2) Slingshot/Story of a Man – did not watch, but must be a billion percent awesome cuz JB loves it – probably not a feel happy drama, but dark and twisty.
3) Tamra Island – I just finished this week, and it’s great! So cute, sweet. But the drama was cut from 20 to 16 eps, and I’m bitter and it shows. if you can wait, wait for the Director’s Cut to be released with all 20 eps, I’m going to re-watch then, it’s that good.
4) Hong Gil Dong (only for JGS) *blush* – my second vote – love HGD, awesome acting by KJH, story is good, but I make no assertions about the ending.
Is currently crazy with Chinese Paladin. Just finished Chinese Paladin III today. Now moving on to Chinese Paladin (I). Good thing Chinese Paladin III is actually the prequel to the original Chinese Paladin. So, more chronologically correct to watch the series backward. Oh, well.
@ kaynn, ockoala
LBH’s Japanese Single was released last year. He also had a Korean song/album, ‘Tears’ released in 1999 for the fans before his military service. Likewise ‘Someday’ is also a treat for his fans.
Itsuka / Someday
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xmSQNYi37mk
Enjoy! ^^
@langdon813
oh I just read it in soompi, Kang Ji Hwan and Lee Da Hae both took a rest stop to Phuket,Thailand. KJH was in Singapore and when he heard that LDH was in Thailand, he met up with her there. She was there with her friends and KJH wanted to meet her friends. Then they left together and were seen in the plane and stuff.
They (their agency) deny the rumors by saying, “they are just friends.”
I think I would implode if they date.
Is there anyone in this sea of You are Beautiful and/or IRIS fans who are watching the Sat/Sun drama Assorted Gems???
I usually don’t watch family dramas, but I think this one is cute. =)
First, when I heard LBH, JDG, WB and SSH are going to perform together on Japan, I was…jealous with those Japanese people! They are so lucky.
).
Second, when I heard JDG admitted that he’s dating Ko So Yeong, oh!!!!! I want to jump off my office building. ( okay I’m exaggerating, but you can figure out how sad i was
At least he’s going out with someone I don’t hate. I saw their movie together, Love Wind Love Song, didn’t think that they had chemistry there, and I did hear that they were dating but I thought they broke up already. Still I am so JEALOUS. Sigh.
You’re Beautiful is getting better and better. I can’t say more than THANK YOU VERY VERY MUCH to Javabeans’ speedy recaps. Even I got annoyed when I saw comments asking you to make it faster! Hell you’re so fast already!
I’m watching Autumn’s Concerto too!! Main reason is I like Vanness. From Taiwanese F4, I like him the most. He probably wasn’t the typical good looking actor at the moment ( he looked….so ‘Chinese’
), but I thought he was charming.
And now I think he’s charming! Hehehe. I like his appearance now.
Autumn’s Concerto is indeed full of cliches, I was considering to quit it after 3rd episode, but I saw the ending clip – the happy family of Ady, Vanness and their son – well I really want to see those scenes! They do look like a happy family! I can imagine Vanness being a good father~~
Random thing : I followed Vanness’ twitter ( he updates regularly,btw ) and there was one time he mentioned Siwon ( of Super Junior ). Apparently they are friends and share their love of God. I wish I can see them together.
Enjoy your weekend, everybody!!
@29, Fran
Dang, that’s quite the list. And they’re all so fantastic, how to choose? City Hall FOR SURE! I’d say watch that first; then Tamra, then SOAM, then HGD. If only to alternate between historical and present day dramas.
@24, celestialorigin
Autumn Concerto is a T-drama, starring a very nicely grown-up Vanness Wu (who is really doing a fantastic job, with crying and everything)! It’s very cliched in some ways but overall enjoyable. As someone mentioned, the female lead is written as a fairly strong character which is nice.
@27, reluctantbutaddicted
HA! That just ain’t right! Although I confess to being MORE than ready for TK to just break down and plant one on MN. I cannot wait to see how the Hong sisters make this happen.
Thanks rubie!
I liked his voice though.
Am I the only one who thinks that the song itself was okay, but the background accompaniment was so out of pitch and totally random!
@Anonymous – I watch Assorted Gems too!
I’ve only seen to ep 6 or something though. I have a crush on the grandma with the grey hair, she’s great.
@29 Fran – I think after YB is done i will probably pick up Samurai High just for some Miura time. I also really need to get on Tokyo Dogs as I adore Oguri and Hiro as well. My friend loves Ohitorisama (because of Teppei, and who doesn’t love that adorable lil kid) and as Big Bang’s Koe Wo Kikasete is the theme song, i may watch it JUST to hear that through every episode lol. I only watched the first episode of Orthros No Inu but it looked intriguing and i may need to finish off that one as well. What I love about jdoramas is that they’re so speedy. Usually 9-12 eps and it’s done. I can marathon it in a weekend, no problem. As for one of your 4 choices, haaard decision. I’ve only watched CH and Tamra, both of which i completely loved. JB will no doubt recommend SOAM and there are some crazy HGD lovers out there as well. I think whichever one you choose, u can’t go wrong
@27 reluctantbutaddicted – i literally LOLed at work as i read your prediction. what a way to combine 2 amazing dramas HAHA! that would be superb as one of their fantasy parodies and i think JGS and PSH could pull it off without a hitch. Thanks for my morning laugh!! <3
@ajay & djes
major vanness love here since meteor garden! <3
a big reason i'm also watching the series is to see vanness's interactions with his son. he'd make such a loving father.
he has a twitter? must go find!
VANESS HAS A TWITTER?!
(SEARCH. NOW)
I used to hate him in Meteor Garden but because of Autumn’s Concerto….. heeeeee.
just don’t wear suspenders again!
@ 29 Fran
I’d suggest waiting on watching Tamra because the first 10 episodes were lovely, but it all fell apart in the editing on the last six episodes. They’re not bad by any means, but it’s not at all the same quality. I kind of wish I had waiting until the dvd to finish the series, but oh well.
@ lovenyc52
“there are some crazy HGD lovers out there as well”
Hee hee, I think that should be a singular, it’s just Samsooki. He’s been known to suddenly burst into a soliloquay devoted to HGD in the middle of an OT. And I much appreciate it, he’s very eloquent.
Actually, I think with JGS’s YB turn, folks who love YB but have never seen JGS may be tempted to watch his earlier works, and I hope they pick up HGD, because it’s my fave drama of the ones he’s starred in (though not his personal best work from his earlier dramas – I liked his turn in Hwang Jini better – he admitted to totally crushing on Ha Ji-won while filming it with her, and it shows in his performance).
although i am obsessed with You’re Beautiful and can’t wait until next wed/thurs, at least we have Smile, You for the weekend.
I just finished the recent BBC version of Emma. I’m a fan of BBC period dramas (Pride and Prejudice, Jane Eyre, North and South, etc) and was thinking, wouldn’t it be awesome to have a Korean drama version of these? Sure, it might not be as appealing without the beautiful dresses and castles, but Korea has it’s fair share of beautiful period costumes (Hwangjini was lovely) or maybe they can do what Clueless did…it’s fun to dream, anyway.
With Smile, You I was struck with what a perfect “Emma” Lee Min Jung would make!!! Maybe a close second would be Kim Hyo Jin, who was just awesome in Happiness. In my dream project, Gong Hyo Jin would be Jane Eyre or Elinor (since she can pull off serious as well as tough roles), Kim Myung Min would be a very handsome version of the ugly Mr. Rochester. Kim Sung Soo or Song Seung Hun would be Willoughby. Go Soo or Lee Sun Gyun would be the tortured Edward. Elizabeth could be the spunky Ha Ji Won or Son Ye Jin and Mr. Darcy would be Hyun Bin or Seo Ji Sup.
I’m sure others could and have thought of even better actors, especially JB, with your awesome insight into korean dramas, but just thought I’d share since this casting game is so fun and it combines two of my loves (though, Korean dramas occupy a larger part of my heart)!
re: Vanness – haha.. everytime I read about him i just giggle. I remember watching him in the episodes of MG that i actually made it through and could not get past his long swingy hair. I saw him around Chinese New Year last year at South Coast in the OC when he had his fire engine red hair (i believe F4 had reunited for a concert tour or something). Not so inconspicuous with the bright red hair and burberry trench coat there. But even though I’m not a ‘fan’ persay, i did squee a little cuz he IS F4 after all haha.
I love HGD, it’s just that whenever I try to talk about it, this weird phenomenon occurs whereby water springs forth from my eyes at a high rate of speed. Same thing with I’m Sorry, I Love You (MiSa). It’s bizarre, really. Therefore I try to refrain from such discussions in order to protect my keyboard from any damage.
LOL at everyone running off to Twitter to find Vanness Wu (guilty)! I didn’t find him, though.
@ 45 haezi
Eee, I just finished watching Emma too. As always, I’m very skeptical (and overprotective) of my Austen men, but I liked the guy who played Knightley here. I’ve often thought about Korean adaptations as well, and aside from lovely English novels, I’d love to see more screwball American comedies from the 40’s and 50’s. Many of them have the same slapstick humor, but they’re also very “innocent” like dramas.
One of my favorites that has SO much potential for elaborating on the original, is The Philadelphia Story. A rich heiress’s wedding is thrown into chaos when her ex-husband and a reporter show up at her house, and that’s it. That’s the plot in one sentence. The original film is brilliant, but it could easily be tweaked here and there to be made into something more substantial.
Maybe that’s why I really liked Fantasy Couple (also by the Hong Sisters). I liked that it was based on something foreign, but made into (IMO) something very Korean.
See here’s the thing.
It isn’t often that you get the perfect storm of k-drama.
1. fun or interesting story
2. great main actors
3. plausible and thoughtful writing
4. non-intrusive directing
5. well paced editing
6. kick-ass and memorable soundtrack songs
If you get half of the above, you have a good drama. If you have most of the above, then you got yourself a great drama. If you get almost all of the above, then you got yourself an awesome / epic drama. If you get ALL of the above, you have a legendary drama.
It is #6 in the above-list that really makes a difference, turning a good drama into a great one, or a great one into epic drama, or an epic into a legendary.
HGD had that one great song, the song that can be on endless repeat.
MNIKSS had like 3 great and memorable songs, maybe 4.
City Hall had 2 great songs….
in fact, almost every kick-ass drama I can remember has at least one great song that is worth listening to, over and over…

“Then leans over her and says “Does a cross-dressing former novice nun slap a man if he kisses her?” Darts in for a little peck on the lips, and retreats. She’s stunned. TK proffers his cheek for a slap… which doesn’t come. “Not enough to get slapped? … Now I’m going to do something that could get me slapped.””
haha hysterical. I see someone has been watching a lot of city hall.
@24 celestialorigin
You do your grocery shopping in Japan? Ooh *jealous*
@27 reluctantbutaddicted
I agree with ockoala, the best fan prediction for the upcoming episode!!! I was cracking up reading it…
@29 Fran
Oh, but, Samurai high school is cute and it’s sort of nice to watch a silly goofy and carefree young man slowly changing into a conscientious young man. Tokyo dogs is more about the relationships between Mizushima Hiro and Ogri Shun’s characters and anything else. Their dialogs are witty and comical. I’m discovering that Mizushima Hiro slurs when talking fast and have to replay scenes many times over to decipher his speech, takes forever to translate…
Anyway, this thread is as addictive as YB(Is it?), better start my day…
I can’t stand the tortore!!!! Watching dramas real time is agonizing – I hate wating for the next episode!!!
Iris keeps toying with me – teasing me with snippits of TOP, flogging me with KTH, then making me drool with scantily clad LBH…I can’t take it!!! I’m cutting myself off now before this sickness gets worse.
I have enjoyed the YB recaps from JB and I don’t know if this is true for everyone, but I find that I enjoy the recaps more than I actually the episodes. I found this to be true with a couple of the shows like ‘My Sweet Seoul’ – JB made the series sound so good that I started to watch it, but it wasn’t as good as the recaps…
Where’s mishane? I need a fanfic recommendaiton!
Thanks for the suggestions guys! Gotta go for a glass of vino to celebrate the weekend now (albeit weds/thurs are the new fri/sat) and hopefully convince the cute young guy in my office that guyliner is the way forward… cya’all
@ ockoala
Just watched TGTBTW and when I saw JWS I thought oooooooooooooo! Yes he did steal the show! I do have to say though, that nooooooo one can beat Clint! Without too much fear from competition on this thread, I think I can say Clint is MINE!!!!! You got to let the old lady have one.
I was off sick Monday and Dramafeverfested “Fireworks”. After watching several hrs of KJH,I drifted off into a flight of fantasy. It went something like this:
I’ve got to go away for the weekend think I’ll call KJH and see if he’ll house sit for me and feed my goldfish. He says fine, he’ll take care of my beachhouse, sun, sand, surf what more could a boy want. I’m thinking, if he’s gonna be playing all weekend he’s gonna forget to feed the fish, so I’d better invite JB as well to make sure the fish get fed! The rest of this fantasy is over to you JB!
What can I say, when I’m sick I hallucinate!
Have a great weekend everyone!
@31 ockoala : love reciprocated, your posts usually crack me up. I confess, I thought I was posting to the Ep 10 page–but I hadn’t noticed the CH comment/s so now I’ll have to go look for them–I got confused about where I was… lack of sleep due to early morning and late-night YB/YAB watching.
@ 48 gallivanter : The Philadelphia Story is one of my all-time favourite movies. I have probably seen it 25-30 times. It’s the dialogue… and the way the dialogue and the humour come so naturally out of the characters. I have been known, when a little bit tipsy, to start calling out “C K Dexter Haven! C K Dexter HAAAAAVEN!!!”.
cannot find vaness twitter!!!
sorry that’s all i can share. lol.
@44 ockoala
Yes, I fell in love with a young JGS in Hwangjin-i, he was that cute young boy she fell in love with… Oh, he was in Lovers in Prague as well, like a toddler, lol. Then in HGD, awww, my favorite scene is SY and him in front of a gate after spending some time together in a market and before leaving, he’s said something really clever which confused her even further and Oh, his smile was priceless, so lovely, adorable and full of mischief… Like everybody, else, I luuuuved HGD except the ending… With that optimistic openning, I, for sure, had something else in my mind…
@45 haezi
Thanks, I have to check that out to see if it’s available on Netflix. Luv Jane Austen…
Do people need to be put out of their misery? http://twitter.com/VanNessVanWu – it’s all G4G~!!! Siwon, Vanness Wu, probably Soshi’s Tiff and f(x)’s Amber.. some epic kinda bible study class.
So I’m keeping up with YAB via WITHS2 because I feel its criminally reprehensible to watch in anything less the pretty HQ it deserves, but I woke up today, read all the OMG EP10 !!!!111!!!!1! comments, realised I’d be waiting almost a week, and whimpered.
How good can it get? What we wait for now is an epic kiss, NOT like kissing David, Julian or Thomas prz, our innocent little nunling. Tae Kyung at least should know what he’s doing. ;odlfijguhdjiskoowkoijrhugiuiukokojjkhuuioOTPPPPPPPPPPPP. Actualy I wouldn’t mind this drama ending with ANJell members in an OT4 because JEREMY and SHIN WOO and OMG, two but TWO broken hearted amazing Other Guys instead of one, how cruel.
@lovenyc52 and gallivanter- I love the rain too but when it’s pouring and one must walk in it (you see…I’m a university student *winks*), then it’s just a downer. But I do love to watch movies or read while drinking hot cocoa/tea during such weather. Alas…there were no thunderstorms here! I do love a thunderstorm. Southern Germany had some really good ones while I was in Munich last year. The music’s missing when it’s raining and there’s no thunder to be found!
Open thread, YAY!
I’ve been reading this site since the first open thread. I love reading open thread because I get so much extra knowledge from it (best shampoo brands, great music to listen, books to read, old drama to watch..etc..etc)
I am not trying to offend anyone, but seems like nowadays JB readers are only interested on YB, even in the open thread. I like YB, but talking about “dying” because of waiting seems like a little bit too much. After all, Wednesday will eventually come, and we all will eventually get to see A.N.JELL again ^^
Anyway,
I haven’t seen a new header from Luv lately, just want to say, I really..Really love Luv’s headers. But, others are great too!
I read somewhere on the open thread about Haruki Murakami. It made me visit the bookstore in my area and bought “Dance Dance Dance” (the only copy available at that time). Now, because of my budget, I have to choose between A Wild Sheep Chase (I heard this one related to Dance Dance Dance) and After Dark. Which one you guys think I should read first?
@xiahkixiri
THANK YOU. I can go to sleep tonight!
@ gallivanter
That’s an interesting idea…American comedies!!! I also enjoyed the Hong sisters’ remake of Overboard, which I had remembered seeing a long, long time ago. They definitely were successful in adapting it to appeal to Koreans. I loved the brilliant addition of the crazy girl played by Jung Soo Young.
Hey, they should do remakes of movies with Audrey Hepburn, Fred Astaire, or Judy Garland. Especially since Koreans love singing and dance! Or maybe more recent works like A Chorus Line. Or they could incorporate their topnotch B-boying and dance choreography skills for a martial arts film. So many possibilities…
@23
Thanks Rubyred! I will definitely check it out, it will be great to pass the time…
@28
Love it! I wish it would turn out like that too!
I think the main concern at the end of episode 10 was to get GMN out of that place…so whoever was the best positioned to do so, in this case SW since he can see…took on the responsibility…it would be too much “scandal” if TK was to do it as he is supposed to be in a relationship with YH…so I can understand the ending, even though I don’t like it! So yes, if by miracle your scenario could happen….Yoopie!
@ajay — search for: VanNessVanWu
I’ve read he’s friends with Super Junior’s Siwon? SO, if a friend of a friend dated Vanness (who i actually have met at a club in Taiwan years ago), does this mean I am only 3-4 degrees away from Super Junior?
Haha! TGIF!
@ 66 bunnifer – haha i wonder if we have the same friend of a friend that dated Vanness??
I have to say that I am truly admiring the fortitude of my niece. She’s got exams going right now, and steadfastly has refused to start watching YAB because she knows she’ll get sucked into a marathon watching session or into an obsessed wait while she should be studying. Truly strength of character going on there! By my calculation episode 16 will be up on Thanksgiving here on the east coast of the US. I can guess EXACTLY what she’ll be doing here instead of helping me cook. She’ll be glued to the screen.
@67 lovenyc52
i wouldn’t be surprised! we may very well know each other too!
it can be a very small world when you’re asian…especially in NY and LA!
here’s one of pic Vanness and Siwon together : http://tweetphoto.com/xlzpajip ( not digging Siwon’s hair.
)
I was going to share Vanness’ twitter, but suddenly my laptop froze. But xiahxiri shared already!
I also read his blog occasionally, thanks God he writes in English
Ok since someone complained about everything being about YB lately I’ll make a few comments not about YB to show I do have a life outside YB.
1) My highlight of the week? Yankees winning the 27th world championship. Mariano and Hideki are my heros. NYC is having a tickertape (no longer tickertape but shredded paper) parade for them today in canyon of heroes
2) My kdrama wish list? A drama about vampires that is totally kickass in terms of style with great story, comedy and solid acting aka like buffy but in a 16 episode format with more dark goth style.
3) Recommended reading? “Geek Love” and “Emperor of Scent”
4) Best cooking tools? Le Crueset pots, Wustof knife, & bamboo cutting board
5) Best place to snowboard? Whistler, Canada (west coast) Sugarbush VT (east coast)
6) Best jeans for an Asian with no butt? True Religion or Hudson jeans
7) Best samgyupsal place in my parts? In queeens “Hahm ji Bach”
8. My current listening? Lady Gaga
9) How much candy I left over from Halloween? One large glass bucket. How am I to ever get rid of all this candy?
10) Kdrama I’ve been meaning to watch for years but haven’t had time? Hong Gil Dong
LOL @ ajay, that much a fan?
Looking forward to Autumn’s Concerto muchly, although I will miss the long locks of Meteor Garden; he looked like Dylan from Neighbours. Yum. Still amused by Mr Celibate doing a bed scene. =p
Shanghai Sweetheart aired and is subbed already, where ma Show peeps at? Maybe will watch the first ep tonight but before I do, anybody seen it? Praying it won’t be OTT cracky, przprz. Although Rainie/Show said the latter part of the drama is very emotional and they’d start crying by themselves… hate the beast but I love the way Rainie says ‘Facebook’.
i really should get off this open thread (my first!) and back to work but one last comment…
@xiahkixiri — i’ve only watched show in that basketball drama (which wasn’t all that), but loved ‘devil beside her’ with rainie. the twdrama i’m waiting for is ‘down with love’ with ella and jerry!
@69 bunnifer – if you’re chinese and in the LA area, we may very well possibly have run into each other haha. i know my name is deceiving but i actually live in the OC
@71 nycgrl – haha nice list. my highlight of the week was finally getting a brass ramyun cooking pot last night as well as some highly recommended HooRooRook ramyun and a shaker of gochutgaru. I am looking forward to eating off that brass lid tonight haha
)
#71 nycgrl -Now I’m curious;-)Who would you pick to act in your kickass vamp drama?:-)
Okay, so Kim So Eun and Jang Geun Seuk just did a commercial together. I love when my fandoms collide! However, most people are divided because most comments run along the vein of : “oh, but I like her with Kim Bum” and Geun Seuk should be with Shin Hye!”
Thoughts, fellow BOF/YB fans (addicts)?
Also, if anyone could tell me what they’re saying in the commercial, that’d be grand, thanks
@70 djes…
he has a blog, too? share please!
edit: i think i found it. is it http://www.alivenotdead.com/vannesswu?
My dream K-idol drama following You’re Beautiful:
Plot: A remake of What Happened in Bali with Kim Bum as Kang In-wook (So Ji-sub’s role, but Bummie would play it less eye intensity and more jaw clenching), Kim So Eun as Lee Soo-jung (famously waffling gold digger played by Ha Ji-won, but her’s would be an innocent sexuality), Jang Geun-seok as who else, but a new generation Jung Jae-min (which launched Jo In-sung into fist crying respectabilty), and Park Shin-hye as Choi Young-joo (played by Park Ye-jin, but I would make this role less bitchy and more arrogantly vulnerable, like a Princess caught in a gilded cage).
I’d call it – What The Heck is Going on in Jeju?
It would be epic guys! I’ll leave it to This belleza to structure a credible plot, I merely provide the casting and the outline. All I know is, following the original WHIB, pretty much each guy/girl is going to kiss/make out/sleep with the other two vying for their affection, and try to get out of this tangled mess.
See youtube vids for visual confirmation that the chemistry would be off the charts, yo.
JGS and So-eun: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TcxVnZIQSsg
JGS and PSH: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Fh_y6vgOMk
Our SoEul couple: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qRKF4qax0lU
@mie : one of his blog is http://www.alivenotdead.com/vannesswu.
oops i don’t see you’ve edited your post
He has another link, but the contents are same with the previous one : http://hypebeast.com/blog/vanness/
Yesterday I saw the clip of 2PM & the YB cast during a photoshoot. I died of cuteness & sexiness overdos. I think it’ll be so cool to have a 2PM cameo on YB to promote their new songs & upcoming album! Ah, that clip made my day..
LOL. I feel as if I just wrote a MLIA story (for those of you who don’t know, it stands for my life is average & it’s simliar to FML except it’s not depressing & consist of stories that are actually the opposite of “average.” Definitly addictive & funny!)
AND i’m loving the YB banners!!
@ jm126 – WAIT…there’s YB banners?!?!??!?!?!?!?!!?!?!?!?!?
*refreshes madly…..*
@ladymai
I got this from someone else…but basically what they are saying:
JGS: Let’s stop meeting as friends and become lovers
KSE: What did you say?
JGS: Do you like coffee or machiatto?
KSE: This would be better to drink with your lover
@72, xiahkixiri
“Still amused by Mr Celibate doing a bed scene.”
LOL! And doing it very well too, might I add.
@78, ockoala
Excellent scenario! And thanks for the clip, because a day without Kim Bum is like a day without sunshine. Did y’all see the pics of him in London? SO PRETTY….
Straight to hell, that’s where I’m going. Straight to hell. Lusting after a devout Christian (although, in my defense, he DID rip off his shirt for my viewing pleasure) and a 20-year old. The weekly (soon to be daily) meeting of the ICOMYM club is now in session!
Whose turn was it to bring snacks?
i wish it’s thursday
that’s when i can watch subbed yb episodes
the suspense is killing me
SW is my own version of Clark Kent. =)
i’ll go rewatch my homemade dvd from ep1 – 6
burn 7-8
rewatch 9-10 on viikii
@ langdon-unni
ICOMYM meeting – “Whose turn was it to bring snacks”
I thought the MYM were the snacks? Most random pic of Bummie in London – I saw one where he is washing his hands in the lavatory. WTH, so ew-inducing and yet he looks so dashing washing his hands. Le sigh.
Have to jet peeps – taking boy koala to the Peds, he’s still sick after a week, this is not going away with TLC and requires the hard meds presumably.
Happy Friday!
@28 reluctantbutaddicted
OMG….that was awesome! It was the best prediction until the CH parody. That was when I started cracking up and no, that scene is taken and should never be repeated. Can the Hong sisters top the CH kiss?
@81 jm 126
What YB banners?!? I haven’t seen one yet!
@Ana
“Now I’m curious;-)Who would you pick to act in your kickass vamp drama?”
-JGS as the vampire anti-hero
-Jung Il Woo as the tormented conflicted vampire
-Moon Geun Young as the kickass vampire slayer ( long dreads and lots of black leather at night and cute school uniform by day)
-Im Soo Jung as is the smart sweet nerd who turns into a powerful being
@lovenyc52 –
my highlight of the week was finally getting a brass ramyun cooking pot last night as well as some highly recommended HooRooRook ramyun and a shaker of gochutgaru. I am looking forward to eating off that brass lid tonight haha
)
I actually tried it at my brother-in-law’s house because he is the only person I know who owns one (maybe because he is a bachelor) and I was always curious if it made the ramen eating experience more pleasurable. It did nothing for me. Also the metal is pretty cheap so I was worried the whole time if it was leeching out something into the ramen. You know what is the best thing to eat ramen with and 10X better than eating it off the lid? Good fermented kimchil especially the young radish one.
@ 73 bunnifer – Devil Beside You (not her!) was my proper entry into dramas, holding that special place as my First. Rainie rocks and is not given enough credit. I’m on the d/l re my excitement about Down With Love since we’ve been hearing about it for foreverrr. I have been enjoying the stories about cute infectious bunny Ella melting Jerry’s grumpy I-R-Daomingsi exterior. As for Show, didn’t watch the bball drama despite 3 irresistable leads but Show himself is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G (lots of subbed clips of him on YT). Saw him in Corner With Love with Barbie, first half sucked, was going to quit but stuck around to listen to pretttty Dean Fujioka and Barbie’s English conversations and suddenly the second half was awesome. Heh.
@ 80 jm126 – I LOVE MLIA. <3 It makes me smile and LOL and think people are so awesome. Although I'm a bit put out at my MLIA-worthy story being rejected. I. WAS. WORTHYYYYYYY. *shakes fist*
@ 88 nycgrl – =((( I can't even be all YAYYY VAMPIRES anymore DAMN YOU MEYER. Tempting as it sounds and oh how I need drama length hours to ogle Im Soo Jung's amazing face.
Any non-DBSK fans looking forward to Heaven's Postman? (Since DBSK fans obv are). November 12th, people!!
Open Thread is quiet and I LOL @ the fact that dramabeans also has BNFs now. =DD samsooki of course (with baby ready to carry on the Legacy), belleza, langdon813, ockoala and mishane being prominent among them, as well as a few others I always look forward to. YAB threads are alarmingly long and when I feel the hours slipping away, buncha names scroll through to find.
Yup, there are definitly banners of YB here now!
Just watched the Jang Geun-Seok & Kim So-Eun’s CF. All I can say is that it’ was too short! Not enough JGS to satisfy my addiction
Have anyone know that Jang Dong Gun is already not single? I’m shocked.
Is it true? He is my first crush in all about eve, and it’s the first k drama I watched. After that I fell into k drama addiction.
The lady is Ko So Young. I’ve never heard of her before, so I googgled her and found that she was known as one of ‘ideal woman’ (in wiki)
But my first reaction to see her is : She is not pretty at all. She looks old and bla bla bla..
Then I realized that I’m perfectly just like the fan girls of Lee Young Jae in Full House when they met Han Ji Eun in spa. “She is not that pretty and too short and bla bla bla..”
But anyway, since I can’t have him -he is too far because he’s a star (I wish I’m the moon) and I’m already married-, if the news is true, I wish their happiness.
So, is it true or not?
@ 83
Ah, thank you so much! If only I could speak Korean…..
happy friday!
@92 icechocolate
I am also shocked that Jang Dong Geun is dating Go So Young! I thought the guy is going to remain this celibate idol for his fans to worship forever! And Go So Young, the only time i heard of her was in a rap in one of the Wondergirls songs, So Hot. the translation was like “sexy eyes like Go so young and beautiful legs like ha ji won” She DOES have piercing eyes!
I can’t wait for Smile, You this weekend. I’m so glad I’m watching it, especially with You’re Beautiful on. Smile, you is a great drama to relieve some of my You’re Beautiful addiction.
Okay, this is WAY off topic even for the OT but I thought this was cool enough to share with you guys. One of my other passions besides the all-consuming love/obsession I now have with K-dramas is interior design. I think I have at one time or another subscribed to just about every decorating magazine in the world! Two of my absolute faves, Blueprint and Domino, are no longer published, but there’s a really cool online magazine that came out recently and I LOVE it. Every page is gorgeous and all you have to do is roll your mouse over a pic to get a direct link to the featured items.
http://www.lonnymag.com
I’m always decorating my “next” house in my mind. Or the fabulous NYC studio apartment I’ll have one day, or my little mountain home away from home…which reminds me, wonder if hubby bought any lottery tickets this week?
Anyway…just my contribution to anyone looking for a way to pass a few hours while waiting for Wednesday!
Totally random here – but if anyone see the pig-bunny from YB for sale somewhere, could you let me know. I think its freakin adorable!
Can’t wait to watch the new Rainie drama – I hope its way better than Miss No Good which I couldn’t bear to watch.
@ 89 – I love my Shin ramen w/ radish kimchi!!! Sometimes I pour the kimchee juice in with the soup because, darn you Shin!!!, its not that spicy. I have discovered, to my great sadness, that the Shin ramen I buy at Hmart is the americanized version! Damn it! I need to find the real stuff – anyone know where I can?
Ohhh – and Samsooki – thanks for inspiring my friend and I. We have spent the entire day coming up with a drama script! Not that we’d do anything with it, but we had fun creating a summary and then casting it!
i can’t believe i’m just coming on OT now. i hate work getting in the way of OT.
well, not work actually, just being AT work. lol.
but it’s almost time to go, and i’ve not done one ounce of productivity… other than re-arrange the furniture in my shared office.
i want a brass bowl/pot w/ a lid too. i don’t care if it doesn’t taste good, i just want to do it to say i’ve done it. lol. lameness.
@ 96 b020
HA! Put me in the same boat. I have to imagine that we’ll see one soon; it’s too cute NOT to market. SBS would be fools to not make one.
@ 64 haezi
Ooh, I’d love seeing a Korean Fred Astaire. Lol, there probably is someone with that nickname, I just don’t know it. I wonder if there’s much crossover between theater actors and drama actors, like there has been in the US recently. Anyone know? Or, for that matter, how is Korea’s theater? I feel like all I hear about Korean musicals are adaptations from American or European shows.
@96 b020
Awww! Me too! Please!
@95 langdon813
May be it’s my computer, it’s taking a long time to turn pages… Oh, I’m downloading HD version of YB to my hard drive, it might be that. Otherwise, it’s pretty and fresh. sort of like? Metropolitan home? is it? It’s always fun to fantasize about decorating or remodeling… For example, for me, installing sliding glass doors off to my back yard, and meantime, I’m also thinking about moving back to LA area as well(Go figure). Most of my friends are still there and I’m at least 2 hours away…
Have been on holiday and so much has happened here!
On the up side I got to see loads of YAB at once when I returned and now I am on cold turkey just like everybody else. Autumn Concerto got me hooked as well, o.k. it is slow but it is nice as well. AND I am actually watching two Jdoramas now: JIN (about a time travelling surgeon) and Ohitorisama (about two teachers who do not seem to be compatible at all, but somehow they fit quite well together).
Congratulations to the pround parents of Ji-Hoon!
Everybody have a nice weekend!
Happy OT Friday! My first time catching it before it got into the 100s. (EDIT: 101st)
Wow, OT is so well rounded. Makes me happy to know there are MLIAers here
YB banners AKA the first time I played the refresh game on DB
@ b020 I can’t wait either the new Raine drama has a nice sounding premise. I watched beginning to end Miss No Good but I really couldn’t stand her character.
From one pov it’s good she wasn’t given a personality transplant with the new clothes and straightened hair as I expected but omg was she annoying.
Adopting american movies into kdramas ideas-
Goldie Hawn and Steve Martin’s House sitter
Sigourney Weaver’s Heartbreakers.
-Yes I’m in a swindler mood.
@ b020 – i want the pig-rabbit too!! super cute
MNG really was hard to get through wasn’t it?? i thought Will Pan did a pretty good job but Rainie’s character was just too annoying for me. I love her, i think she’s a pretty good actress and i know she was told to play the role very manga-like, but it was overkill and i could not stand the way she talked after awhile (ok fine, right from the beginning haha). I am going to let Shanghai Sweetheart run a few more episodes before diving in
My brass pot was a cheap little one from HMart so i hope that the handles don’t break off during the first use.
@ lb_tmi – you may live vicariously through me twin
i’ll let you know how it goes haha!
Am I the only one who’s enjoying Smile, You more than You’re Beautiful? Don’t get me wrong… I like them both. But I think Smile, You is the cutest thing I’ve seen in forever. I mean, the old people shenanigans is pretty annoying but that takes up relatively little screen time and the main leads are so good together. I usually don’t care about things like chemistry and whatnot because I’m not clever enough to tell the difference between good chemistry and bad chemistry… so for me to say that they are hot together means they must be really, really good.
Anyhow, You’re Beautiful is still awesome… But I don’t mind if I have to wait a day or two to see it and I’m not usually itching for a fix every week (at least not as much as some). But I’m truly sad when I’ve finished my second episode of Smile, You. You’re Beautiful is kind of my distraction to get me through the second half of the week.
@icechocolate – I say, it’s true.
Re: pig-rabbit – I want one, too. But since I’m not into stuffed toys, I hope they come out with a small version of it, like a pin or a magnet.
@b020 – Have you tried Ashi or Asi, I think?
Anyone else into SG Wannabe? I just started listening to their music after catching a snippet of La La La, and I think they’re fantastic. Once I learned what SG stood for, I was sold (Hil.a.ri.ous!). Lee Seok Yun has a pretty good voice, and I don’t mind him replacing the guy that left, since I was never attached to the original group.
Re Smile, You – I think I like it better than You’re Beautiful as well. Even though I don’t agree with (or maybe don’t understand) the Korean social mores that would prompt the family to take so much abuse from Grandpa Kang, I enjoy the story between the lead couple. Sometimes frustrating, but not overly exasperating if I don’t watch a marathon of episodes.
have a great weekend all!
YB fighting!
@104 Z
I’m also loving Smile,You. But can’t say that I enjoy Smile,you more than You’re Beautiful. I look forward to both. The adult does annoy me but I don’t mind them as much cuz it’s a lesson to me not to act like that when I’m older. heheheh.
I have a hard time feeling the chemistry between the leads but these two take my breath away whenever they are together. You can feel it right of the bat these two,
They are smoking hot together.
Is anyone watching City of Glass? Do you reccomend it?
@62 bleu
I suggest reading After Dark, not just because I haven’t read the others you’ve mentioned, but also because it’s the easiest to read (as far as I know his most recently translated book so it’s a little more contemporary). However, if you ever get the chance read Kafka on the Shore, it’s his best book. You should pass on Norwegian Wood…it’s boring and melodramatic.
lol
one more thing is anybody else now humming Rudolph Red Nose Reindeer with Oink Oink?
Me too, I want the pig-rabbit. And if anyone sees JGS’ hoodie blouse, please let me know. I want to get one.
@langdon 813
I’ve been into interior designing lately too. I don’t know why. I’m not particularly creative or artistic. But I do enjoy rooms and homes that are uniquely put together. I do think it’s too late and inappropriate for me to change career now.
I’m going to be in LA next weekend. Anything I shouldn’t miss?
The thunderstorms just keep rolling through here. When the lightning and thunder were 3 seconds apart at dinner time, I unplugged all my computers, but then peace prevailed until after I plugged them in & turned them on again, and now more thunder. The thing with rain in the pacific northwest is that it isn’t just a nice weekend’s rain to make things clean, it is six months of gray skies and wet, wet, wet. Well, time to stay indoor and watch dramas, I guess. I have the movie Crow’s Zero for tonight, but I forget now why, or for who, I wanted to see it.
@langdon813
“I’m always decorating my “next” house in my mind. Or the fabulous NYC studio apartment I’ll have one day, or my little mountain home away from home…which reminds me, wonder if hubby bought any lottery tickets this week?”
You can decorate my NYC pad anytime. Of course we have a little problem with distance. Actually I’ve been wanting to hire a color consultant because while I’m good at selecting furniture and stuff I can’t seem to select the right wall colors to go with it all.

“Anyone else into SG Wannabe? I just started listening to their music after catching a snippet of La La La, and I think they’re fantastic. Once I learned what SG stood for, I was sold (Hil.a.ri.ous!). Lee Seok Yun has a pretty good voice, and I don’t mind him replacing the guy that left, since I was never attached to the original group.”
I love SG Wannabe. They are my favorite Korean music group. I actually saw them perform when they were in NYC about 2 years ago. I have noticed they sound more folk and more like simon and garfunkle with the new member. I like the new member well enough but cringe whenever they do some of the old songs with him e.g. partner for life. It just doesn’t sound right without Dong Ha.
Hi there.
I’ve been haunting the YB thread, so I thought I’d come over here and introduce myself to all you nice folks in this community here.
I’m Asian and live in Asia (but neither Korean/Korea nor Japanese/Japan). My K-addiction started nearly two years ago when I was surfing channels one night and caught “Witch Amusement” on telly. I was sufficiently amused to keep going. Then decided to give Delightful Girl Choon Hyang a try – and loved it! Much to my dismay, as I had held out against K-Soap Opera for years, because my mother favours the Winter Sonata genre of weeping and wailing (which I can’t abide). I was pleasantly surprised to learn that K-dramas include more genres than weepy soap operas.
I have since then branched out into Japan. My favourite K-dramas are DGCH (of course), Mawang/Devil (brilliant!), Last Scandal of My Life (sweet), My Name is Kim Sam Soon and A Story of a Man. My favourite J-dramas are Producing Nobuta, Honey & Clover, The Drifting Classroom, Hero, Meteor Bond, Galileo and Engine. Yes, I tend to veer more towards the J than the K. But my current addiction is YAB.
I’m a bit embarrassed by the completeness of my capitulation to K/J-drama. I have surreptitious conversations with my teenage nieces about K-pop culture, trying to keep abreast of what’s really cool at the grassroots, but not letting on that I know as much as I do!
My justification (when I need one) is that my work focuses on East Asia, and watching K/J-dramas helps me understand the chopstick cultures better!
I used to frequent an internet book discussion forum. But since discovering K-drama my frivolous reading has drastically tapered off – there’s just so much time to burn! Instead of my copious frivolous fiction reading, I now do copious frivolous drama watching. So it seems to make sense to transfer my internet play to this sandbox here.
Cheers, everyone! Here’s to many more hours of fun and over-analysing!
Oh, yes, not to forget: All hail, Great Javabeans [prostrates self] Delighted to have discovered you and your entourage.
Hello,
Sorry this is the first time I post here and I’m doing it to ask for some help.
I got my mom hooked on kdrams one of the shows we first watched was A prince’s first love with subtitles in spanish since we couldn’t find them in English. However they never finish posting them. I read here that the drama is on netflix, but I’ve been searching and searching with out luck.
If anyone has had luck finding or knows were we can watch it please let me know (link me)
G’day fellow OTers! I need a major digression from the wait for Wednesday’s YAB and have it here on OT
.
@ 28 reluctantbutaddicted
First up, as a devoted Cityhaller, totally second and third your kiss scenario for Ep 11 YAB. Yet, seeing a photo from Soompi where HKT is taking off his jacket in the auditorium hall. I have a feeling that it might be more Last Scandal than CH.
@ 45 haezi
Lucky you to have seen the 2009 version of Emma. I love Romola Garai but guess we will have to wait till next year when it is shown in Australia. Definitely think it a great idea to have KMM as Mr Rochester and GHJ as Jane Eyre. Has anyone heard further about Ellen Page’s turn as Jane Eyre??
@ Autumn’s Concerto
Didn’t realise so many DBers are following this one too! I watched the first five episodes in one go a few days ago with the same motive as everyone – Vanness. And, boy, what a great job he’d done here. And Ady is doing fine too! I am not sure if I want to follow up the drama immediately for its MG2 storyline though. Maybe a few weeks later after YB is done to fill the withdrawal void. Sounds like a plan, hehe.
Oh, one more thing. Thanks to Rambutan from last week’s OT for the recommendation on My Queen! I really enjoyed it. It won’t come as a surprise to say that it reminds me of Dal Ja’s Spring and Ethan’s character is a variation of Tae Bong. Ethan’s acting here is several notches up from Fated to Love You! He single-handedly moved me to tears in several scenes. Cheryl Yang is equally good as the strong woman lacking luck in love. This is my first time seeing her and will watch out her other works. The ending is as good as it can get!!
@115 aleinad
It’s on youtube with english subs. Try http://www.dramacrazy.net
Was warching YAB, I was feeling nostalgic today, mostly becuase I realised I haven’t wanted to punch a K drama girl as much as Yoohi in a while now, probably Chae rin of Delightful Girl was the last one.
@ 39 kaynn
Thanks rubie!
Am I the only one who thinks that the song itself was okay, but the background accompaniment was so out of pitch and totally random! I liked his voice though.
Thanks kaynn, appreciate the reply. It’s a nice pick-me-up response I need today. Glad that you like BH’s voice, too. Have a good day. ^^
Was watching YAB, and all of a sudden I was feeling nostalgic today, mostly becuase I realised I haven’t wanted to punch a K drama girl as much as Yoohi in a while now, probably Chae rin of Delightful Girl was the last one. Ah the memories, the screaming at my monitor with awful language, I didn’t even hate the mother from Shining Inheritance this much.
@111, yvhsien
I wish I could tell you about good stuff happening in LA, unfortunately I’m WAY down South so I won’t be any help at all. There are lots of SoCal-ers on the OT though; ockoala, lovenyc52, and cingdoc too, I think (sorry if I missed anyone). They’ll be around later and can fill you in on any not-to-miss events!
@113, nycgrl
I would be happy to help but yeah, logistics could be problematic. But if you can wait until October 2010 I’m planning to be in NYC for a wedding!
But you’ll have it looking fabulous long before then, I’m sure!
@114, serendipity
Hello! No need to be embarrassed! The Dramabeans OT community is like the anti-12 step program for K-drama addicts. Nothing but love, understanding, acceptance, and above all, rampant enabling here. You’re among friends!
And last but not least…
@samsooki
To quote City of Angels…”I can’t see you but I know you’re there.”
Friend is killing me. KILLING ME! Why do you do this to me, why, why, why? And I let you! You’re like the Pied Piper of K-dramas! I just finished Ep 10. Oh my God. If anyone EVER says that Hyun Bin can’t act his ass off, I am going to hunt them down and force them to watch every single minute of Ep 10. And you said Ep 19 is the one to watch out for? Then I am DONE for. If y’all never hear from me again, you’ll know that my heart just finally had all it could stand. Please remember me fondly.
@109 Sig
Thanks for the suggestion.
I tried to find Kafka on the Shore, apparently I need to order in advance (no idea why) for that one. The funny thing is, when I placed an order, the shop assistant said “Oh, Johnny Walker and Colonel Sanders’ book! Cool!”
I was like..eh?
@ 123 bleu
If you like Murakami, you should try reading Banana Yoshimoto when you get a chance. Her work isn’t nearly as nihilistic, but it’s got a similar tone, IMO. Kitchen is my favorite of hers (makes me cry tears of happiness every time I read it. Not joking), but NP, Amrita, and Lizard are all very good too.
@122 Langdon813
Thank you! I do feel as if I have fallen among comfortable friends.
TGIF!!!!!
Not because it’s weekend, which for most is to rest, but for me it’s start of the work week ***sigh. I’m happy only because it’s OT ,and I get to “visit” all my favorite “friends” here in kdramaland.
It’s more than crazy today @ work…but I’m now in peace once I have entered in kdramaland…I don’t care, care, care ( For those of you who watch Smile, You will get this “lame” joke)
@28 Reluctantbutaddicted
Bravo on such great scenario writing…my 2 fav blended together so seamlessly…BRAVO….I was cracking up as I was reading it, and hubby, who is watching His Smallville ( we respect each other about “air time” of our own shows) actually stopped and looked at me with a WTH look
@111Yvhsien
regarding your LA trip…depending if you like Great/to die for Chinese dumplings or schiao lin bao, you might want to try Din Tai Fung in Arcadia ( Baldwin Blvd and Huntington Blvd) WARNING, though, the waiting is crazy and long. The food though, is delish- highly recommended. =b
@ockoala
Sorry to hear that the kids/kid are sick. I’m still “doctoring” for my kids, so I know. Push fluids!!!!, I noticed that even the regular flu is quite stubborn, and require patience ( & Rx meds).
@gallivanter
This is a fair warning in case you didn’t read OT 107…Samsooki and I are planning to go to Seattle end of this month to “Stalk” Binnie, he he…do you have extra spaces/couches for us to crash on ???
On a more somber note, there’s 2 things this week that makes my family more precious to me…
A new book, Notes left behind, released this week. It’s a book where the parents of a now deceased 6 y.o girl (from brain cancer) who finds little notes/drawings that she left behind (for them to read)***very sad
The incomprehensible tragedy in Fort Hood, Texas. I never support any war, but I totally respect and support the brave,often young, men and women who fight in them. Why?? why , I asked myself , do they have to have such tragic demise??? The fact that Veterans Day is just around the corner makes me even sadder. We DO NOT need more deaths to mourn for….
@ 126 cingdoc
Do you know what dates yet? I’ve got room, but there might be a million people at my house around Thanksgiving (I’m unsure when people are coming and going right now)
There’s much love surrounding YB, and I wholeheartedly agree. But there is life before YB for me! It’s the Jp medical/period/time travel drama JIN that airs on Sunday night, and Eng. subs are usually ready in 2-3 days. I can’t tell which I am more addicted to, because they are addicting for different reasons.
@128 gallivanter
Thank you very much, but (at least for me), the “trip” is pure fantasy. I can’t take any more time off at work (I’ve used up all my days off/sick leave this past summer when I was hospitalized), and my house would be in complete chaos if I’m not there. ***sigh. The fact that you offered makes me feel “loved”….As for Samsooki, I’m sure the newly minted pa pa is pretty busy, he he…
@ Serenity
Welcome to OT. =-) Your tastes in dramas are very diverse and I think you may enjoy watching City Hall. Just a hunch, so take it for what it’s worth. I do know its hard waiting between eps of YB, I’m using the downtime to catch up on dramas I’ve been meaning to watch. When I watch one great drama (such as YB), it really juices me up to go on a drama-watching spree. So if its the same with you, I think watching CH may just help you get through Fri-Wed.
@ langdon-unni
You’re quoting the most pseudo-ponderous romance-babble movie of all time, City of Angels? Brilliant! Craptastic movie, but I thoroughly enjoyed watching it for how just poorly directed and written it was. And for it being Meg Ryan’s swan song as America’s Sweetheart, and then she disappeared for awhile only to re-emerge as a creature from another planet. I think the entire movie was made as a 2 hours music video for Sarah McLachlan’s Angel, which is terrific even now.
@ samsooki
Stop recommending to landgon-unni dramas that may shorten her life. She’s got a shaky constitution, cries on a dime, and doesn’t handle drama anxiety too well. Let’s stick with the fluff to be on the safe side. I worry about checking OT in the next few days to see what type of ALL CAPS, exclamation points, screams of agony will come from her. I may need to send her some anti-anxiety medicine if you keep this up.
Friends sounds too much for my wimpy soul – so god bless.
@ yvhsein
I don’t know your entire schedule, or likes/dislikes, so I’ll throw out some suggestions and you google your way to your final itinerary. Feel free to discount anything I say:
1. Getty Center – 4 hours minimum, on the Westside – gorgeous architecture and pretty good (well, excellent for LA standards) art collection.
2. Santa Monica Pier and Third Street – tourist mecca, but still a wonderful stroll and great LA beachy vibe – for less mainstream, go to Venice Beach.
3. The Grove – always good place to people watch – it seems everytime I go I bump into a celeb, it’s more bustling than Rodeo Drive these days.
4 Pasadena – the slower side of LA but still fun and cute.
Food wise:
1. Chosun Galbi on Western (OMG, I have suddenly understood what the name means, like 10 years later, right now, and it’s because of k-dramas) – considered one of the top BBQ restaurants in K-town.
2. Ding Tai Fung in Arcadia (cingdoc’s recommendation) – crazy waits, but delicious food.
I’m not really thinking too hard right now, so I may suggest more later, okay? Have fun in LA when you visit!
__________________________________________________________
What I learned this week from k-dramas:
1. Tamra is a gem, and Park Kyu is THE MAN. I may be too afraid to ever marry a Jo Gook (he’d eat my heart alive even though I am terribly attracted to his every pore), but I would propose to PK and then cart him off to my lair forever, he’s that perfect. And whomever found perfect heroes in dramas to be boring, let me introduce you to PK.
2. Pig-Rabbits are the new IT thing, and suddenly I don’t want one anymore – but it’s still beyond cute.
Which leads me to my final revelation:
3. On Air has probably the bitchest pair of female lead characters I have ever watched on TV, and the men are nigh too charming either, but hot damn, the way the drama skewers the k-drama scene and tropes is worth every minute watching.
In episode 3, Director Lee (Park Yong-ha) tells Scripwriter Suh (Song Yoon-a) that she only writes flashy dialogue, that her dramas have no heart, that people don’t talk like that in real life (cough, cough, Gilmore Girls, cough). She denies it, of course, then watches a few scenes from a drama that night at home. What follows is singlehandedly the funniest parody of k-drama I have ever seen reinacted by real k-actors (so funny, it would win Drama Fo Yo Mama).
Scene: Donut Shop, girl behind the counter packing donuts (played by Jung Hye-bin) tells the man (played by Lee Chun-hee, Chunderalla himself) not to come by anymore.
JHB: You come here all the time, please don’t come anymore
LCH: I don’t come here to visit you, I come because I like donuts
JHBL Liar, even if you come here everyday, my heart is not like take-out.
LCH leaves, then enters b*yotch played by Park Shi-yon:
PSY: I saw oppa leave, he seems to live here now. How long does it take break up.
JHB: It’s not that simple, we have history, ever since I was his housekeeper in Paris….. (ockaola fell out of bed laughing, seriously, funniest inside reference to writer’s earlier work Lovers in Paris)
PSH: *throws money* take this and break up. *sashays out*
JHB: *tears come* You shouldn’t treat me like this, we’re……..sisters.
LCH: * sits at desk holding a half-eaten donut* (with a box of donuts right next to him – love the continuity between scenes)
PSH: How long does it take to buffer your love.
LCH: Do not bother JHB anymore, because that person is *cue dramatic music* ……my air supply. And my air supply is dying……..of an incurable disease.
End of scene.
Mwah ha ha ha ha, even typing this was so funny I had to stop and compose myself. Enjoy!
@131 ockoala
Thanks for the recommendation! I really appreciate it. There’s so much stuff out there, it’s hard to sift. I can’t say myself what works for me, precisely. The best I can come up with is – no particular genre, provided “not stupid” and “not draggy” — fearfully subjective criteria! But personal recommendations do cut down the dross. I shall check out City Hall. Thanks!
Oh Lord. I’ve just realized I am the Jo In-sung of K-drama watchers!
And…crap. Now I have to watch On Air.
@ 132 Serenity
City Hall may take a few episodes to settle into its story (I found the earlier episodes brilliant ONLY after I finished the entire drama and went on an immediate re-watch, and could savor the exquisite set-up being done by the writer).
KSA is perhaps not as magnificent in CH as she was in her career-making role in MNKISS, but you’re going to meet a certain gentleman Thundie calls Kimchi McDreamy, so hold on to your horses.
Samsooki has been recapping City Hall here at DB, you can find his recaps in the index. The recaps are brilliant and capture the drama and essence perfectly, be sure to check it out. When I miss CH and can’t watch, I read Samsooki’s recaps. (I know I’ll be doing that with JB’s YB recaps).
YB fever is like CH fever, except with a bajillion more people because its such a mania drama. I love YB with all my heart, it’s just so fun and charming.
@ langdon-unni
There are worse things to be than the Jo In-sung of k-drama watching. Shall we bestow a Baeksang award for you? As for On Air, I’m watching an episode a week, and it’s kinda fun and hilarious. For now, I can’t say it’s a good drama, but only that I get a kick out of watching it.
@ belleza
You’re the only one I know who watched Swallow the Sun. Put aside the incomprehensible (to me, at least) story line, which made me give up the drama early on – I recently caught an episode on TV, and I watched it, it must be one of the last eps, and I was so weirded out by the director’s weird camera angles, the random scene cuts, and crazy set-up of scenes between characters. This is the first time “directing” has affected me and really stuck out as distracting. Do you know anything about this director, previous works, or am I just being too nitpicky. I didn’t get this vibe from All In, so I’m pretty sure STS is not aping All In’s filming even down to directing. Totally random ask, I know, but just wanted your 2 cents, if any. Mwah in advance.
Has nothing much to say this weekend… i just want to wave both my hands to all the City Hallers here… CH ended months ago, but still there was never an OT without City Hall being mentioned. It always makes my Fridays bright. *waves* (more and more dramas are being listed on my to-watch list, would I be able to finish them all before my 60th bday? lol)
@62 bleu
definitely A Wild Sheep Chase. it was an epic for me. not that it’s related to Dance Dance Dance. it’s just very well written. if you like Haruki’s earlier work, A Wild Sheep Chase is a must read.
@ #2 Reese, #36 Anonymous
Like I’ve said before, Assorted Gems is the best weekend drama on right now. The writing is good, the characters are endearing (love Gyeol Myeong Ja halmoni, too!), it’s got humor and heart…and there’s not one, but TWO adorable couples to root for.
@ nycgrl
My highlight of the week was tonight’s 2-hour massage. I wish I could say I’m as relaxed as wet noodles, but I need a dozen or so more massages to reach that state. I was thinking that I should make a CD of my favorite kdrama instrumental music (including the Tamra OST) and bring it with me next time. There’s only so much Chinese instrumental music (set-on-repeat!) I can take…although that one time they played Korean trot was hilarious.
@ haezi, gallivanter
I enjoyed Emma. I’ve always loved Romola Garai, and have lurved Jonny Lee Miller since Trainspotting (Sick Boy!
), but am I the only one who thought he looked too young to play Knightley? He’s supposed to be 16 years older than Emma, but JLM’s still got that boyish charm and looks young for his age.
haezi – I love your kdrama casting of BBC period characters…but Mr. Darcy has already been taken by none other than -> PARK KYU.
@ gallivanter
There are lots of kdrama actors trained in the theatre. Off the top of my head – Hwang Jung Min, Oh Man Seok, Uhm Ki Joon, Moon Jung Hee…
I love the theatre, and I wish more actors had experience in it. This is why I’m partial to British actors -> they can act…and often much better at playing Americans than their American counterparts (see the current slew of UK actors on U.S. TV shows as reference). Last night, The Globe Theatre’s production of Love’s Labour’s Lost made it’s way to my neck of the woods (my 2nd highlight of the week), and it was great. Funny though, after having watched too much Torchwood, I kept getting distracted by random thoughts of “Ooh, that actor’s Welsh!”. Lol.
@ lovenyc52
After the freakish heat a few days ago, and misleading weather reports of rain yesterday, we finally got a downpour today. So, don’t worry, the storm is on its way to SoCal (if it hasn’t reached you already).
But if you think SoCal drivers are crappy when it rains, NorCal ones are worse. Not only do they forget how to drive when it rains….but they never really knew how to drive properly to begin with. You’ve got it good down there.
I just hope it clears up here before tomorrow’s game. It would really suck to be sitting out in the rain at the stadium.
@ ockoala
Your Hallyu-4 dialogue is hilarious!
If Jung Woo Sung were there, I’d hop on the plane with you.
But, what would Yonsama have to say about the H-4 encroaching on his territory? o_O
@ langdon813
I have some comments on 8Days/CITC-watching, but I’ll save them for tomorrow, when I’ve got a few more braincells working.
@ hjkomo – nope! no rain here yet. it has been quite a bit chillier though (mid-high 60s during the day, high 50s/low 60s at night) so that’s good. i want to see some thunderclouds. haha i always thought norcalers knew how to drive better in the rain cuz it rains so much more there and so they’re more used to it. no? haha. the worst drivers EVER are in the worst parking lot EVER…which is the Marina Supermarket parking lot in Cupertino. I have never seen so many Benz boats almost hit each other in my life. And the parking spots fit a Mini, and yet you’ll see a Escalade sausage it’s way in. Ridic.
@ yvhsien – haha i think ockoala and cingdoc pretty much covered the hot spots. i have to second and third the Din Tai Fung recommendation in arcadia – best dumplings you’ll get outside of the Taiwan Din Tai Fung
ockoala mentioned some good LA shopping spots. The Grove has an AWESOME farmer’s market on the weekends (not sure about weekdays as i’m never there then) and the food stalls/stations there are really diverse and quite yummy. And if you like very chic, up to the minute (and quite pricey) fashion, there’s always Robertson Blvd and Melrose for the smaller more exclusive boutiques.
@ 37 djes
the only reason i’m never a member of ICOMYM is Jang Dong-gun (all the way from All About Eve)…. and now it’s confirmed he’s dating..
NO, I’m not bitter, I’m a true fan, so must support him (recalls the scene of ANJells fan when TK & HY’s news breakout, LOL)
I dug out my stash of Korean VCDs& DvDs.. and there it is – their movie “Love Wind Love Song” oooo, so it was THAT girl. it only has chinese sub, not gonna rewatch so back into box in store room.
it’s not crack (that is You’re Beautiful)
@ coco
Thank you.
@124 gallivanter
Thanks, I’ll check them out.
@136 spiderwill
Noted. thank you
I wish Bride of the Water God was realy being made into a drama – any news on that if it IS happening?
I’m back from LA! I’m so upset though that I didn’t ask for recommendations from fellow DB-ers for restaurants and whatnot. But I still had a fantastic time, though sorely lackly sleep. Missed my unni’s and crowd!
@serendipity: Welcome from a relative newbie! Don’t you feel like you’ve found a hidden gem here in the wide expanse of cyberspace? ^_^
@Z & onemorepls: I can not say I enjoy YB or YAB less than Smile, You because the show is entirely entertaining, witty, and endearing. But I can say that I’m more excited about SY’s lead couple. I think I have to credit LMJ and JKH’s amazing chemistry. Not that JGS-PSH don’t have great chemistry, but the sizzle was more instantaeous with LMJ-JKH despite the lack of skinship/proximity in the first eps. And once I discover a pairing like that – I lock in. lols..
Hi, My Sweetheart: I admit, I’m more intrigued with BTS of Rainie and Show (and Ghost aka Xiao Gui) than perhaps the show itself. But the 1st ep surprised me with Show’s funny protrayal – he’s currently stealing all the spotlight
. It’s definitely over-the-top, but in a similar vein of YB, it is not disparingly so. I’m in the mood for comedy, plus I want to see how Rainie and Show’s chemistry turn out, so I’m going to stay tuned.
Friends, My Legend: I did not watch it on the plane, not surprising since one of my friends was more afraid of flying than we suspected. And being the “experienced flyer” I had my hands full trying to calm her down. Darn it, I so could have made good headway with Friends since the flight was 12 hrs long total.
Oh, and I watched “NY, I Love You” in LA (ha, funny since I live in NY) – it was an unique experience as the theater was very private and had comfy couches. And the movie was wonderfully done – had tons of brilliant wit and moving artistry. Highly recommend it.
After watching YB, I become a fan of JGS and have been looking for his dramas/movies to watch while waiting for new episodes of YB. I have just finished his part in Hwang Jin Yi. Although I do not like historical drama, Hwang Jin Yi was really beautifully produced. I love JGS’ cute face – looks so innocent and pure.
I have not cried over a drama for a long time since I tried to avoid sad dramas (’cause I have cried too much for these dramas already.)
But I cannot keep my tears when watching the episode that Eun Ho passed away. So sad…….. Although JGS was so young then, he really performed very well for that role. I can feel his pain when he is lying in the bed crying……. He is really a gifted actor. Ha Ji Won is also great in the scene that Jin Yi mourns for Eun Ho.
And the scene that Eun Ho gives the ring to Jin Yi is also very beautiful and memorable…. I will re-watch this scene from time to time.
@ langdon813 and ockoala – haha why am i not surprised to see you ladies in the top 3 of th JWS article DB posted…and within 20 minutes of each other?? haha!
@ lovenyc52
Because we love each other as much as we love Jung Woo-sung.
Oh, and we’re connected on the same wavelength that alerts one when the other starts fangirling. It’s eerie, I know.
@ hjkomo
Going to the Cal game today, huh? Hope Cal wins, I’m in a hubby-supporting mood today. Yonsama can singlehandedly bring out the obasan numbers that would require the H4 collectively to muster, so he’s in no danger of relinquishing his stranglehold in Japan. Why, I cannot for the life of me understand, it must be his mystical powers.
A CD of the best k-drama instrumentals would be awesome! I’d put on mine Tamra, City Hall, STLDFM, MNIKSS, a few other assorted gems.
Oh, and I would love it if you, langdon, and myself take a trip to Japan to stalk a H4 that included JWS. I can outshout and outstalk any obasan!
_____________________________________________________
I’m halfway through G.I. Joe – passed out since I’m still sick and so tired to boot. But LBH is the only person doing anything resembling “acting” on that screen, and his English is really as great as I’ve seen in interviews. And he’s so handsome when he smirks, hhhmm, the LBH smirk. Though….I thought JWS outsmirked him in TGTBTW as well – *smirk* Park Chang-yi – (omo, omo don’t throw tomatoes).
And I’ve suddenly realized why JWS (or even JDG) doesn’t elicit the same levels of insanity that LBH does when JB posts articles – JWS has not acted in a drama in 15 years!!! And the audience here being primarily drama-watchers, lots of people probably have never seen JWS act (myself included until 2 months ago). I’m sad, if only they knew what they were missing.
JWS needs to take a page from the Lee Jung-jae handbook and act in a drama once in awhile – or pull a Cha Seung-won or Lee Byun-hun, which is do a drama every many long years. CSW re-introduced himself to a new generation of drama watchers, and I know JWS is just ripe for a vehicle. And if he comes back, I bet they can lure SYJ to do the drama with me, and then I would just stare at the TV in silence during the entire broadcast.
@ hjkomo
“haezi – I love your kdrama casting of BBC period characters…but Mr. Darcy has already been taken by none other than -> PARK KYU.”
You know what scene made me bawl like a baby (and unlike my unni langdon813, I rarely tear up watching anything), and then I started crying for the rest of Tamra every frickin time Park Kyu showed up, because OMG my heart was in pieces for 6 entire episodes – the scene when PK is leaving Tamra and the villagers have a party for him and then they present him with a new hat, and then PK cannot help himself, he just starts to break down slightly, and you know what Tamra folks mean to him, and what he did for Tamra, and it’s not even the romance lovey-dovey that got me, but the meaningful way Tamra showed PK how to be a man instead of a noble. And all that was so well-developed for 10 episodes. And all stooopid BJ could talk about was William, William, and PK tells her “you know I am leaving Tamra, right? That means we’ll never see each other again.” AHHHHHH, I’m going to find a nice comforter to cry into now.
And so, yes, as much as I hate saying so and so character is like Mr. Darcy – Park Kyu is the k-drama equivalent of Darcy. And Beo-jin is the sageuk version of ISWAK’s Xiang-qin, and imagine if Xiang-qin spent the entire drama not obsessing about Joe, but about Jiro. That’s why Tamra is so unbelievably awesome.
Hi everyone! Just wondering out loud, but does anybody know the name of the actor who played Go Mi Nam’s high school best friend by any chance? He resembles Kingone Wang from “Why Why Love”, no?
About to have fangirly moment: Just watched Episode 13 of Smile, You and Jung Kyung-ho and Lee Min-jung have such great chemistry. They are hyper-aware of each other and when they are like less than a feet apart, the sparks are seriously flying. Pretty impressive stuff, I don’t think I’ve seen such intensity since City Hall. But I wouldn’t exactly compare the two, since Smile, You’s highlight are the main leads and not much else (though I like Lee Chun-hee and the other girl’s story as well). It’ll be interesting once Kang-soo realizes he is falling for Jung-in, especially since he’s so physically aware of her right now. Oh the awkwardness! I really do love Jung Kyung-ho. Okay, I think I got that off my chest.
By the way, I think I watched the ending to YAB like twenty times today. The look on TK’s face when he finally registers MN is heart-breaking. I also believe that the beginning of the next episode will totally be a quasi-continuation of the Last Scandal scene. And about the pig-rabbit plushie, I totally knew they would end up selling it. Though I might buy the pogs, I think they’re uber cute. I’m guessing the plushie is going to be playing some major role in the next episode if ANGSTY! TK comes to term w/his feelings.
@148, mud
You probably found it by now but just in case, the actor’s name is Kim Dong-yeon.
@147, ockoala
You nailed it! That’s exactly what I loved so much about Park Kyu; not only his love for Beo-jin (although that would have been enough), but his genuine affection for the island and all of its inhabitants. You really feel his heart breaking when he has to leave his home, because that’s what it becomes for him. His shyness and discomfort masquerades as disdain and conceit, but when you get the slightest glimpse of the heart within, it’s like the sun bursting through the clouds. Such a great character and such a great performance. Just like Cha Seung-won with Jo Gook, no one else but Im Ju-hwan could have brought Park Kyu to life in such a perfect way. I can’t wait for the DVD to come out because I’m hoping that we’ll see Beo-jin FINALLY figure out what most of us could see from the beginning, but in a way that makes sense, rather than the rushed effort we were stuck with.
@145, lovenyc52
Yes, there I was this morning, happily drinking coffee and looking forward to lunch and shopping with my sisters, when JB decided to make my day even better by starting it off with Jung Woo-sung. I knew I’d take some flack for jumping on that thread so quickly, but self-control and JWS don’t exactly go hand in hand. Am I right?? I knew my ockoala would be there soon after. He’s her I LUB YOU, after all. Well, that…and our fan-girl spidey sense!
Okay guys! I’m in a great mood, had a fantastic day, feeling pretty confident…Episode 11 of Friend awaits. I can do this!
@ xiahkixiri
“Shanghai Sweetheart aired and is subbed already, where ma Show peeps at?”
right over hereeee! lol. SS is indeed a bit OTT with its humor, but guess what, i think it actually works. because show’s character doesn’t come off as stupid or ridiculous. instead, u totally fall for this innocent, naive, heart-as-big-as-the-ocean guy, and even if its OTT, its really funny. b/c show is awesome like that <3 also rainie's performance is pretty good; u can see the loneliness in her eyes. overall, very adorable and crack-tastic. definitely worth checking out. im staying with this one b/c i know im in for an angst fest soon hahaha.
@ Kgrl
i'm really excited to see show and rainie's chemistry too! from what we've seen in ep 1 and bts/tv show appearances, i think their pairing will rise to OTP status, maybe giving the rainie-mike pairing a run for their money??
With all the KPop groups that are/ have debuted, I’ve only been paying attention to two: MBLAQ and B2ST/BEAST.
I love Rain but his group’s debut song left much to be desired. They are good looking, great performers, and ooze potential, but the song… I hope their next one is better because I’m pretty sure I would become a fan. Seeing Rain dance to the song does make it more appealing though.
BEAST, on the other hand, is my new obsession. “Bad Girl” may not be anything special but it’s still on repeat. I like all the members but LOVE Yo Seob <3 . He is just so CUTE! I feel like he's the maknae instead of Dong Woon.
And for the first time since discovering KPop/ Big Bang, I'm hunting YouTube for every clip I can find of them. I can't wait til they start doing variety shows!
Anyone here a BEAST fan?
My post isn’t showing up…
Oh well, enjoy Rain dancing to MBLAQ’s “Oh Yeah” :

Taohua: Soo-In have moments?! *Faints* Don’t tell me, I’m going to wait until tomorrow’s ep come out before I embark on a mini-SY spazz marathon. AHH! Can’t wait!
I just did a YB marathon and watched 3 eps in one shot…and boy, is JGS and PSH completely loveable and fun to watch! I love how there’s still witty parodies splashed throughout the episodes even as it gets more intense. I’m really enjoying this series, it’s so entertaining and wonderful to see a good, well-thought out, and well-protrayed drama. I wouldn’t mind if they made this a daily drama, like “Friends” or something. lols, but that’ll make Javabean’s workload very heavy. Hahaha…
@ ockoala
JWS and SYJ together in a drama??? You might end up being frozen while staring at the screen, but I’d be on the floor, post-swoon. Hey, we can watch it together and get langdon-unnie to come over…with smelling salts.
I’m currently thawing out after freezing my ass off at the game. It was a gorgeous day, but as soon as the sun set, the temperature dropped significantly, and I wasn’t dressed warmly enough.
Cal sisters – the game was utterly disappointing.
And if you haven’t heard yet, Jahvid Best suffered a concussion after a scary fall. It was actually quite frightening. With 6 minutes to go in the 2nd quarter, Cal was down 0-14 to Oregon State. I was on the opposite corner of the stadium, but I could see Best’s golden jersey flying through air (above the defenders’ heads) as he went in for a touchdown. And while he was airborn, a Beaver pushed him, and he ended up going a couple feet even higher and then landed awkwardly on his back and head. His helmet went flying off upon impact, and he was unconscious. The entire stadium went silent for the 20-25 minutes (longest game break I’ve ever seen) that it took to get him off the field. Both Cal and Oregon State players were kneeling on the field. No one in the stands knew what his condition was, and all we could do was watch and wait. It was eery.
But luckily, he regained consciousness, and it looks like he didn’t suffer more serious injuries, aside from the concussion.
Last week, after Oregon beat USC, hubby said – “Wouldn’t it be great if Stanford beats Oregon next week?” I told him to shut it and not to jinx Oregon keeping USC out of the Rose Bowl…but lo and behold, Stanford did beat Oregon today. And, yes, I’m not hearing the end of it from hubby.
@ hjkomo
If I had one wish to make the perfect drama for our generation – I would cast Jung Woo-sung and Son Ye-jin, end of story for me. Perfect chemistry and physical compatibility, not to mention mad acting chops, oh, and both are utter perfections of gorgeousness to behold. If that happens, we need to watch together (and yes, langdon will bring smelling salts) so that we can fangirl IN REAL TIME rather than later in cyber-space. Knowing LBH was in a drama (IRIS) was really exciting. But just the hypothetical thought of JWS in a drama – my heart keeps skipping beats right now…..
And yes, he is my “I lub you” in dreamland. Hubby is my “I lub you” in the real world. Hubby shouldn’t mind, I live in the real world and only occasionally visit dreamland.
I was totally rooting for Cal today, hjkomo, especially knowing you were attending the game. Hubby took a 24 hour trip to NYC and back, and brought me chocolates and macarons from La Maison du Chocolate, my fave. The gesture of love was so unexpectedly sweet, I decided to support Cal without reservation today. Too bad the team really isn’t very consistently good this year.
And since I don’t even follow Stanford, my drawmate came over tonight and we watched the end of the game and Stanford won, and we’re like “wah???, eh, okay.” Even though I did root for Cal during the game, in the sports shows tonight, it showed Pac-10 rankings with arrows going up and down, and when we saw Cal with a giant arrow pointing down, we started cracking up (can’t help it, we may be half-hearted Stanford sports followers, but cardinal blood does bleed red), and I hear hubby from the kitchen talking to boy koala “_____, do you hear a couple of witches cackling from Mommy’s room”
Nice.

Here’s something extra special I just came across…and trust me, it’s better than chocolate and macaroons.

If there was ever any doubt, # 156 is me. Hubby erased the settings when he scrubbed the computer. He is also reading my OT posts, and wants to shout out to hjkomo, his Cal sister.
Oh, and I did view the link in the vicinity of husband (he’s lurking right now), but it was alright, he kept saying “so gay” after each picture. Whatever, if it helps him sleep at night.
Oh, I’m so bad. I lub you, honey!
I made it through Eps 11 and 12…NO crying! Well, okay, maybe one time, but that’s it! Then I came to brag about it and saw hjkomo’s post. ^ ^ ^
Should have gotten the smelling salts (travel-ready, of course) in advance! WHOA!
I love my DB friends.
My husband has been awesome this week, I really should be bragging on him too. It was a tough week for me but he has been great, taking care of everything and never once complaining about the insane amount of time I spend here in dreamworld (because the real world is kicking my butt right now). I’m not quite how long it will be before the real Mr. langdon813 shows up, so I plan to enjoy it while it lasts!
Hi Guys,
I swear I coming on OT later each time. It was a long day, but at least I resolved some of the bad cases from last night’s patient load, so I’m tired but happy
I also made my 16 yo happy by taking her shopping!!! at Brea’s Nordstrom for the half yearly sale-( I was looking for you @ockoala and @lovenyc) Anyhoo, she’s happy because Mom here dropped some $$ for her “have to have” Twilight’s (New Moon) t shirts. We ended in Rowland Hts for late dinner, and I looked for you two, again, he he.
@hjkomo
He was happy and told me that the “condom men:/ I mean the Trojans won. yeah (weakly)
As you can see, I didn’t even know that Cal played. I ‘m sorry to hear that Best was hurt. I only knew USC played just because hubby stayed in the car and listened to the game while “the girls” were spending his $$ ,
I just saw this on tv and thought of @Samsooki:
the new Ninja magic chopper( like the slap chopper that Samsooki like)…now is it just coincidental that this product comes out the same time Rain’s new movie “The (Ninja) Assassin”??? just a thought….
I showed Pig Rabbit to both lil cingdoc, and they, too want one…so I guessed this house will order 3#!!!
I have to attend ANOTHER ALL DAY lecture tomorrow…joy (sarcastically)…this time hubby is not joining me , so I’ll be bored ( too bad, I can’t bring my laptop, or I could sit in the back and rewatch YB, he he
@hjkomo
WOW, holy moly….hey, what nosebleed, some of us here have weak hearts. WOW, CSW & Binnie!!!! swoons/drools/ WOW!!! (mouth still open)
I tried to call to chat with my sisters ( yes, the triplets), but these TVB nuts have their all girls night out- Alan Tam and Lee Hark Cun (sp??) concert…uhh “passed “for me
Time to finish YB before heading to bed…see you guys tomorrow…
@ To all my fellow YB lovers
just a thought: You know how TK is starting to fall for GMN. Well, what will happen if he finds out MN is the daughter of the man that his Mom loves. The same man that his Mom wishes more than anything to have ( more than her own son). Would TK, who already has a hard time expressing his feeling toward MN, now “hate” his “arch enemy”’s offspring??? Would the Hong sister, miraculously, somehow resolve this Macbeth-ish conflict for our ever-brooding TK??? @belleza, @Samsooki- I would like to hear you guys’s response to my imaginary problem…thanks.
@YAB Addict
Howl’s is my favorite animated movie, possibly of all time. If you liked that you may also enjoy more of Hayao Miyazaki’s work- from Gibli studios. They hand-draw all their anime and it’s all very beautiful and even romantic, though not always in an adult way.
E.g., He may be most famous for “My Neighbour Totoro” which, in the words of a Russian friend of mine, “Is the most evocative piece of art about childhood he’s ever seen”- and he raved about how that movie crosses cultural borders and generation gaps to capture the romantic essence of childhood.
Give him a try! I love his work!
Other works by him that I liked:
1) My Neighbour Totoro
2) Spirited Away
3) Ponyo on the Cliff
4) Castle in the Sky
@Gallivater
“if that makes any sense. I’m just too focused on getting through the weekend to enjoy weekend dramas.”
Alas- the story of my life as well! I’m actually currently travelling on a weekend get-away, and although it’s beautiful here, and everything is perfect, all I want to do is put my ipod in my ear and listen to AN Jells and rewatch episode 10 every night (specially the last 20 minutes- I’ve seen the “night conversation” scene 9 times in the last 2 days!) and fervently pray for Wednesday! (And dread it too of course… because, what would life be post-YB?!)
Someone arrange group therapy for all us certifiable fans in 3 weeks will ya’??
@ 28 reluctantbutaddicted
Have to add- aweeeesome prediction… can you write the next episode for us?!
Apologies to those not watching YB and getting too much of this on OT… but those of us on crack can’t help ourselves!
(Blame JB, she’s our amazing, highest-quality-stuff-only dealer!)
@ 161 cingdoc : HTK’s agonizing dilemma
I think he will have only a momentary recoil… but he’s already pretty committed to GMN and his feelings will give him some insight into his mother’s feelings, at least in so far as realizing that any kind of emotion stirs up all kinds of emotions (he already kind of knows this, I think; it’s part of why he’s cut himself off so much, pre-GMN). No one can really sympathize with that mother, but he’ll at least be able to understand how powerful love is, making you do things you didn’t think you would or could (as he’s been dragged into all kinds of engagement with the world and with people that he had foresworn as ‘too bothersome’).
But that one moment of pause on his part might be enough to send GMN haring off to the convent. And then HTK would have to sing the song for her and track her down.
@163: Thanks! I am willing to let the H Sisters have that scenario free gratis! Just would love to see it… in fact a little trilogy of parody scenarios running through the manager’s head about what’s going on with HTK and GMN would be hysterical. CH would have to be one, what would be the others?
@161 cingdoc
Doesn’t that sound a bit like Winter Sonata? Can’t exactly remember how it went, but, I sorta remember something like that?
@ hjkomo – omg. i swooned. i really did. WHY CAN I NOT READ FRENCH!?!?! le sigh. that’s the extent of my french haha. thanks for that. it really woke me up
i was actually very surprised by some of them. pleasantly surprised that is.
@ cingdoc – i have been very good and purposely avoiding the nordstrom half-yearly so far. i was actually online the night before the sale started when the website opened and had placed a few things in my cart… and then talked myself out of it and forced myself to close the page. trying my darndest to save money for my asia trip. because i don’t REALLY need another pair of jeans or boots haha. did you also happen to see the Jacob cardboard cutout they are selling at Nordies?!?!
@ annieee and xiahkixiri – so i previously said i’d wait a couple of episodes before diving into Shanghai Sweetheart… but i couldn’t resist and i’m glad i didn’t. it is really a fun series so far! Thankfully i don’t really need subs (though they do help some). Do you know if it’s available for raw download anywhere at least? I can’t wait till Show turns hot – i’m liking his hair in the beginning montage… and i like this character rainie plays so far too. Different than her previous roles

How you spoil us, hjkomo! Please continue…
Yeah,
just came back from the dreaded lectures; I’m “free” for another year. (My hubby and I take turn in attending these mundane but necessary lectures). I was pretty good most of the time, but when the topics became tooo boring, my mind keep thinking about YB( boy, I got the YB-itis BAD- what to do but have to wait for another week).In order to survive this week, I started to watch Hwang Jin Yi so that I get my JGS “fix”. I barely watched 10 min of it so far ( had to sleep last nite so that I won’t doze off while the Prof was lecturing
I liked what I have seen so far, so….this has to do til thurs when I can read JB’s recap.
@reluctantbutaddicted
I think this is the first time that I actually “self preview” as to what the drama will develop into. Most of the time I waited til the drama is finished and then “marathon” it. I have to give kudo’s to the Hong sisters for “hooking” me into the drama so deeply. The last time I did that was a few years back when I was reading 4 Dan Brown’s books within 2 weeks( that was before Da Vinci Code was the flavor of the month). I don’t know, but I would be very sad if our poor naive GMN can’t handle this “possible” fall out of her love ( that TK might have trouble loving her because of her dad). In a way, I began to compare my Coffee Prince ( yes , @Samsooki) with YB. Both female leads had to “become” a male for their own reasons. For those of us who have watched CP, we all knew the conflicts/misunderstanding/torments Go Eun Chan & Choi Han Kyul had to face before they achieved their happy endings. Granted in YB, HTK knew the true identity of GMN early on, but I don’t think GMN herself know anything how to handle the relationship…I will be patient and see how well the Hong sisters will develop this storyline. I often wonder if 16 episodes is enough. The Hong sisters better not do a haphazardly ending or I will be totally ” urgh”.(Am I thinking toooo much about this?? sorry guys
@lovenyc52
Regarding Nordstrom sale. Let me clarify this- I DID NOT buy anything for myself. It’s the lil cingdoc’s who did. I,personally, hate to shop ( I think this is one reason my hubby loves me). When I do shop, I “target” shop- I only go buy something I need, and I do not buy anything else. ( My Mom often says this is weird for someone who was born in HKG, because people in HKG are “natural shoppers”- yeah, well…Mom)
Anyhoo, the 16 yo was in hog heaven while we were there, buying up a storm, and ended the spree by asking Mom to take pix for her with her cell phone, standing next to Edward and Jacob. Lil cingoc #2 , being the tomboy that she is, rolled her eyes up and just walked away. Yup, the fun of having 2 teenaged girls…
@Kgrl
It seems like he is a beta male…but I don’t know, there are times when he’s confident and it’s pretty hot. And of course, when he’s being awkward, it’s totally cute. I think that last line in episode 14 did it for me. He’s too sweet. And it totally was something unexpected, since in most dramas it goes another way and then there’ lots of angst. But I’m glad it didn’t, b/c it showed the shift of Kang-soo’s feelings that is starting to happen—I won’t say anymore since I don’t want to spoil it for anyone.
Both episode 13 &14 have really cute Soo-In moments. It’s so cute….and it’s official I’m totally crushing on Kang-soo, I think he may be my ideal type in real life (well 2nd to LDW’s Tae-jo in Partner
And Lee Min Jung is really impressive, I personally am surprised at how well she can emote, especially in the quiet and emotional scenes. Though there were a few scenes in the beginning that she did a bit OTP, but she does melodrama parts really well. Both she and JKH have really expressive eyes, which makes their scenes so much fun to watch.
I didn’t want to double post…but I realized I made two errors in my previous post. I meant Hyun-soo (have no idea where I got Kang-soo from) and the OTP should definitely be OTT. ::sigh:: it’s been a long day. Hope everyone had a great weekend!
@ hjkomo – haha thanks for the english pages
) happy viewing indeedy!!
@ cingdoc – i, unfortunately, love to shop. and i blame it on my moms and pops who love to shop as well. it’s in the genes and there’s nothing i can do about it he he. i have been better curbing my spending lately though, so there’s always [a little bit of] hope!
) cell phone pix of the cutouts eh?? nice. i’m assuming she will be seeing new moon in 2 weeks?
@ Autumn’s Concerto watchers – i’ve been hearing snippets here and there about this drama and how Vanness has been doing quite well in it, and my curiosity was peaked. Aaaaand so I just marathoned 4 episodes of it today [ep 5 is loading as i type]. I am hooked. I usually try to stay away from the really melodramatic ones. I love and enjoy angst in a drama but normally prefer it with comedy (like YB and Tamra), but there’s something about this one that i am really enjoying so far. Even though there’s a bunch of cliches at work here (rich guy, poor girl, memory loss, tumors, etc) but it doesn’t annoy me..yet. We’ll see how far I get. Anyone know how many episodes it’s planned to be?? And why does Mu Cheng resemble Barbie a ton?!?
Re: Shanghai Sweetheart/Hi My Sweetheart
just wondering about all fellow OT-ers who are excited about this drama, it’s already airing, so go ahead and dig for the video clips on the internets! and i know there’s already subs for the first episode, so go for it! i dont think you’ll regret it : )
@lovenyc52
ive been waiting for show luo to play a bad-ass playboy for years!! he’s been the good guy, boy-next-door type for too long. we finally get to see his hotness on-screen! and you know how we all swoon for the guys with a cold exterior but a heart full of love for the main girl haha. now i shall be off to watch ep 2 of SS!
as for raw downloads, u can try these, courtesy of show luo fans at his int’l fan forum : )
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=6LSVMKPF ep1
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=BU5M323W ep2
@ xiahkixiri
was back-reading OT, and i have a feeling ur also a fan of show luo? if so, we shall party together!! loll b/c the die-hard fangirling that i engage in for him is to the point where it’s kinda embarrassing. it would be awesome to know that im not alone in my extreme fangirl endeavors xp. but seriously, who would not fall in love with this guy?
Spent the day at my sister’s in Torrance, we both have one older boy one younger girl so the four of them paired off and tore thru the house while sis and I youtubed vids of YB montages. I also learned something today, apparently Jiro Wang, who until his recent turn in Momo Love, I have also seen as a goofy comedy sidekick, is part of a boy band called Farenheit with the Taiwanese Song Seong-hun Wu Zhun, and two other dudes. My lack of consistent interest in the tdrama tpop scene is to blame for being so clueless. Anyways, right now Vanness is really just stellar in Autumn Concerto, the tdrama world is so hot this year.
I gave up on Smile after two eps despite my love for JKH, because I couldn’t stand LMJ’s Gu Hye-son OTT impression and my hatred of all the ancillary characters. But if LMJ has calmed down and the tension begins to build with JKH, I’m totally picking back up.
@ hjkomo
thanks again for the links. I am still blinking my eyes because it’s so dry from staring endlessly at the screen.
I tell you what, the bathroom scene in Autumn Concerto was just heartbreaking, wasn’t it? Simple, understated, but so quietly moving and powerful. I was so proud of Vanness, you’d have thought he was my child.
And yes, thank God, he IS too old to be my child! I don’t have to pin on the ICOMYM badge when I drool over him.
may I ask, what is ICOMYM?
I’m downloading Autumn’s Concerto via Sublimesubs, so I have to be really patient waiting for the next episodes
Liking it so far, and Vanness……….ahhhh, now I know why I liked him in Meteor Garden…because I’ve predicted that he would be so hot in his thirties!
I’m going to watch episode 5 now.
ICOMYM = Inappropriate Crush On Much Younger Men
langdon813 is the Club President.
We have many members, and the our numbers keep growing.
@ annieee – thanks for the DL links!! yes, i can’t wait for show to play the playboy/bad boy. He really has played the nice goofy guy for too long. time to switch it up! same with rainie. i’m glad she’s not playing the standard girl next door again, but instead has some spunk to her
i will definitely be fangirling with you. Ever since i first discovered him in Taiwan 3 years ago I have <3ed him!!
)
@ ockoala –
"…is part of a boy band called Farenheit with the Taiwanese Song Seong-hun Wu Zhun"
HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHA!!!! omg, that is EXACTLY it!! the boy is hot hot hot to look at, but i cringe when i watch him [try to] act. the only thing i have seen him be ok in is Hot Shot and that's cuz the parts that i watched, he didn't talk much, just acted mysterious and bballed
)
as for lack of interest in the tw drama/tw pop scene – understandable. the dramas, with the exception of a noted few, still need substantial work to be up to par with many korean dramas. and tw pop… there are some solo artists and groups i love (jay chou, wang lee hom, show, S.H.E.), but i feel their idol groups lack a certain appeal and don't have the allure of kpop groups. But that's just my opinion. I'm sure there are OTers here that appreciate and are way more knowlegeable about the tw pop scene than i am.
)
Re: Autumn's Concerto. It's decided. I will continue watching this. I NEVER thought i'd see the day where i'd be watching a Vanness drama. But the boy has impressed me.
hrmm… my post isn’t showing up.. i’ll give it a lil time to go through the filter
)
so that’s what ICOMYM stands for!! count me in please… =P
oh happy day. 2PM’s new album drops online tomorrow. i have already pre-ordered my copy. talk about an entire group of ICOMYM hehe
I am weak, I have no will-power, I might as well stop making proclamations in OT and them proceed to never do any of it!
I said I was stopping Autumn Concerto to enjoy it all after it finishes – and the second episode 6 pops online, I’m like, omo, omo, I must watch. Now I know why I didn’t like Ady in the first few episodes, her godawful hairstyle, which is changing now the drama is shifting into the future. And she looks so much like Barbie now, but a better actress IMO. And Vanness, jesus amen, he’s awesome! So hawt, so cool, so vulnerable of a performance, I love it.
Can I say right now…..I think Autumn Concerto may just overtake Fated to Love You as the top t-drama for fans everywhere. AC has so much heart, and Vanness is doing such a great job, I found Ethan to be the weak link in FTLY. AC and YB are now my weekly insanity.
And that end of episode montage of the family together having breakfast – AHHHHHH, that better happen sooner rather than later, they are such a beautiful family!
And for AC lovers – AC is actually the combination of 2 dramas that I enjoyed watching (neither is spectacular or groundbreaking) – Prince Turns into Frog (and its k-drama remake Save the Last Dance for Me), and Only You (k-drama with Jo Hyun-jae and Han Chae-young – and Lee Chun-hee).
Check these three out if you like the AC storyline.
@ ockoala – ady looks a ton like barbie in those happy family montages huh?!?!?! barbie from corner with love, not barbie from pre-letting-anyone-touch-her-hair. i don’t think i can ever think of vanness as hot ( i can’t shake the image of his swingy long hair of his F4 days ), but he has one kickin body that’s for sure. and i think i figured out why i like this drama despite it’s cliches. because as of now there’s no crazy love triangle or evil 2nd lead guy or girl. it has a more.. honest and mature feel, does that make sense? the 2nd leads (so far) understand the feelings of the OTP and aren’t trying to manipulate their way into the picture. we’ll see what happens in the future. i hate to say all this only to be proven wrong later haha… i really hope this drama will focus on how Guang Xi and Mu Cheng find their way back to each other and not on manipulative outsiders.
Sigh…I always seem to come to the OT crying, don’t I?
I just watched Episode 16 of Friend. A man’s slow, torturous descent into hell…and we take every single step with him. Just brutal. You can pinpoint almost to the second the moment that Dong-soo gives in (gives up?) completely and walks away from any hope of a decent life. Literally just walks away. Hyun Bin is so amazing.
Have to stop that, I’ll be crying all over again. Deep breaths, deep breaths….
I watched Episode 6 of Autumn Concerto earlier today and frankly it just pissed me off! I know it’s riddled with cliches, but that was just crazy time! Vanness still knocked it out of the park, but I was a little worried I’d be blind forever, my eyes rolled so far back in my head. WTH?? Way to encourage his treatment and recovery, you moron Mu Cheng. And is it like the unwritten law of T-dramas that the Evil Mother must have an Evil Beehive Hairdo? Don’t get me started on the intricate Knot of Despair-hair than Moron Mu Cheng is sporting (ockoala, amen sista). See? Pissed off. I’m no fun to be around at all tonight, am I??
One funny thing to lighten the mood. I talked to my 12-year old nephew a little while ago to find out how his basketball game went tonight (he plays on the varsity team) and he cracked me up. Quote:
“Aunt Sis, I ROCKED the bench!”
The kid’s got a great attitude.
@ lovenyc52
np! im really liking rainie’s character too. even though she’s kind at heart, she covers it up with spunkiness and erects a wall btwn people. but she has her reasons and sensing her loneliness makes u really sympathize with her. also, for once, it’s a strong female character yayy!
regarding tw entertainment scene, thats a question i’ve always been curious about. why are so many ppl (particularly non-koreans) attracted to kpop but not cpop? i’ve come to the conclusion that kpop has more western elements and better visual effects (hot guys, hot girls, entertaining mv’s and performances), which cpop often lacks (perhaps b/c of tight budgets?). i wasnt following the tw pop culture scene either until i fell in love with show luo and watched his entertainment news show. i feel cpop has plenty of great talent, even with the idols, and some of their personalities are so lovable : ) but most of the tw dramas are definitely not there yet. as for why, im not sure. maybe it’s cause most of the actors (singer-idols jumping on the acting bandwagon) were never trained in acting and are only cast for their looks/popularity among the youth? if im not wrong, i think k-entertainment companies usually do a talent-scouting thing and train their artists really hard. from what i’ve seen, this is not what happens in taiwan.
woops, long digression. now i have to get back to homework!
@langdon813
Ummmm, since I just read DB post regarding the cast of YB, I just became a Premium/VIP member of ICOMYM – JGS is toooo cute.Rats, I’m old enough to be his Mom, but I really started to adore the dude. Ok, JGS, you can join my Manrem, just stand next to all these Hyungs: Gong Yoo, Ji Jin Hee, Suh Ji Seok, and Binnie. Noona here can take ALL you guys, right after I have taken my Extra Strength Centrum Silver, he he
@185, cingdoc
Your post inspired me to get all nerdy and see how many of my Inappropriate Crushes really ARE are young enough for me to have given birth to. Sadly, there are quite a few!
Disclaimer: Lee Min-ki is technically on the list, but I refuse (REFUSE!) to put his name down, what with him being my I LUB YOU and us being soulmates and all.
So here’s my top five (in order of how much I love them):
1) My baby Kim Bum
2) Im Ju-hwan
3) Jung Il-woo
4) Jang Geun-seok
5) Lee Wan
There are a few that JUST missed the cut-off date (because I was a virtuous 17-18 year old, thank you very much! Plus…my list, my rules!
)
1) Hyun Bin
2) Rain
3) Joe Cheng
4) Kim Rae-won
5) Jo In-sung
@ cingdoc & langdon813 – let’s not get me started on how many ICOMYM i have. my harem (or Manrem as ockoala calls it hehe!) is already bursting at the seams as I have been collecting for quite awhiles. i can’t even list them all because it would take up multiple posts lol!!
Re: Autumn’s Concerto – i thought about watching it on viikii, but decided that i’m going to torture myself and wait for sublime’s subs to come out on their YT page because i really love their subbing work and how the video quality is a bit higher too… haven’t decided if it’s one i want to DL and keep though. i still can’t believe i’m watching a vanness show..and enjoying it!! he’s really doing great!
@186 langdon813
Does any one here can tell me how to dial the clock back ( not the Daylight Saving kind, ok) so that I can be, let say 25 yo, and run amok with these boys. Noona here ( not the ahjumma) can out party them anytime **wheeze wheeze** yeah, right…who am I trying to kid, my bad knee would give up on me first
*sigh ok, I will just virtually keep these manrem and watch them on my loyal laptop *sigh* Is it Thurs yet? Time for YAB??
Geesh, thanks to you & your list, I was reminded that I forgot some of “my boys”!!! How can I forgot my Park Kyu, my Iljimae, and Lee Wan!!! Dang, I think I have to up my dosage of Centrum Silver; my memory of my “loved ones” aren’t as clear in this feeble mind
My 16 yo told her friends that her Mom watch YB and they squealed, followed by, uhhh?? your Mom?? As @hjkoma said earlier, in Kdramaland, WE can watch anything we want-so,there!
Ohhh, that’s what ICOMYM stands for!
Well, most of my crushes are older men ( love ajusshis! ) like : Jang Dong Gun, Lee Byung Hun, Jung Woo Sung, Jung Jun Ho.
But, pssstt, I will only admit here and one time only, I now have serious crush to Shinee’s members! They’re soo cute!
Should I apply as ICOMYM member?
Last night I watched Autumn’s Concerto ep. 5. I saw that bathroom’s scene…….aahhh, I really want to hug Vanness too!
About Taiwanese Evil Mothers, not only they have similar hairstyles, I think they all look the same! Guang Xi’s mother resembles Dao Ming Shi’s mother, IMO.
I learned how to download torrent just because of AC!
I usually prefer direct download, but Sublimesubs released torrent file faster, and I can’t wait longer for MU links!
@183 langdon813 –
Seriously. Wait til you get to Eps 19-20. I’m not kidding. Don’t wear socks when you watch Ep 19. They will just be knocked off anyway, and then you gotta go find them. It is better that you just keep your socks in your hand until after you watch, then you can just put them back on. See?
And yes, Hyun Bin really is amazing, waaaaaaaaay better than I thought he could be, and of course, Binnie (and KJH) is mine so you know I was biased to begin with.
@190, Samsooki
At last!
I’m halfway through Ep 17 so i know I’ll finish it tonight, something I both highly anticipate and dread intensely! I’m so in awe of Hyun Bin right now. Half the tears I’ve shed have been because he’s so brilliant in this role. He looks hard, and scary, and his eyes are just dead. There’s no soul there anymore.
It’s amazing that this is the same guy from MNIKSS. Amazing.
THAT”S what kills me.
The little boy who became a man and whose soul died along the way, the ill-fated love of two brothers-in-arms, one who became an animal and the other who let it happen….
…. there is NO WAY that could be the same guy who played Over The Rainbow for Jung Ryo Won on the baby grand piano in MNIKSS!!! …. could he be the same person?
I really need to find another adjective besides “amazing”, don’t I? But it’s very apt, because as great as Hyun Bin has been in everything I’ve seen him in, I would never imagined that he could transform himself into someone so unrecognizable. And terrifying. And so, so sad.
I still have questions but I’ll wait until I finish to see if they’re answered. And to see if I hate Jun-seok any less than I do at this moment.
My social life is so busy these days, I just realized.
I’m a member of the Drool Club (LBY, drool…..), the co-captain of the Swoon Team (Jung Woo-sung, swoonz), I audit the ICOMYM Club (technically, none of those boys are too young for me, I’m just their noona, so I like to believe), and a late-comer but fervent loyal addition to Team Park Kyu!, and lets not forget what started this entire journey at DB for me, I’m forever a City Haller.
Whew, that’s a lot of cheerleading I need to do, better get working on those moves.
@ langdon-unni
PK’s journey in Tamra is ultimately much more meaningful to me than the love story – because his love for BJ mirrors his love for Tamra, and by the end, is intertwined forever and he is a different man after his experience. It’s so moving and touching its in lyrical simplicity of this story.
I’m happily and reluctantly handing over my Tamra DVDs to sister, she’s looking for something to watch and is actually interested in watching Tamra – I’m sad I won’t be able to re-watch moments from Ep. 11 onward at my leisure.
Did you see a certain preview for YB episode 11? I squealed at the end (not just squeed, because I didn’t think it would go there yet). Tomorrow, I’m looking forward to you.
hehe, it looks like the term “squee” is not dead after all.
Since others have used it recently (*cough* jb *cough*), I won’t be remiss if I drop a squee every now and then. I will await the proper time, of course, for diction and usage concerns noted by ockoala.
There is an unspoken issue, perhaps, of the perceived lack of masculinity in using said term, but really, how insecure in manhood must an individual be, to shy away from certain words that may be associated more with females than males, empirically speaking.
For example, if Dong Soo (so ably played by Binnie in the drama, Friend our Legend) said “squee,” all of his gangster underlings would not dare snicker or even crack a smile.
Being “a man,” as I see it anyway, is more about your character more than it is about the words that may come out of your mouth, although one may be related to the other. If Dong Soo can say squee, then I see no reason why I cannot.
I confess, I saw AND squeed over the YB spoiler, but then wished I hadn’t. That would have been such a great surprise! But I have no self control when it comes to this drama. Anything else and I’d avoid spoilers like the plague but not YB, oh NO! I troll around for tidbits just like everybody else does. Good thing it’s back on tomorrow, I think I’ll need cheering up after tonight.
But then again, all I really have to do is imagine Samsooki teaching Baby Ji Hoon to squee and I’m laughing. I fully expect Baby’s first word to be “Binnie”. Kang Ji-hwan is kind of a mouthful, after all. Hmmm, maybe it will just be the all-encompassing “MINE!” which could work in many situations.
@ samsooki
” I will await the proper time, of course, for diction and usage concerns noted by ockoala.”
Uhm, that would be like Shifu taking advice from Po. I’m constantly admiring the eloquence of your posts, and bemoaning the fact that mine are rife with typos, gaffes and bad punctuation (Eat, Shoots and Leaves bedamned).
You know I was teasing you, right? It was only ripe to insert some fangirly suggestions your way on the proper usage of “Squee.”
By the by, this may be the first recommendation I’m sending your way – but I think you may enjoy Tamra the Island. Call it a kindred hunch, but it’s the perfect drama to watch with the misses and Baby Ji-hoon if you’ve got some time at home. Setting aside the five out of six criteria you posited for a drama being great (which I think Tamra has), Tamra hits the sixth criteria out of the park – the Tamra OST is phenomenal.
And lastly, if Jang Geun-seok can dress and style himself the way he has in YB and still be hot and desirable and manly to the entire female drama-watching population of YB – it proves that the use of “Squee” by you or any other man can in no way diminish any manliness.
@ockoala,

Now, how should I put this.
Hrrrmm.
I’ve seen parts of Last Isla, Tamra. It has been coming on MBC America on weekends (MBC America is the only K-channel we get through AT&T U-Verse – although, being a Josh Whedon fan, I appreciate the term U-Verse, very much, hehe).
Now, here are the parts that I’ve seen;
William: Beo-Jin!
Beo-Jin: *crying* Willllllliam!
William: Beo-Jin!
Beo-Jin: Willllliaaaaaaaaaaam!
William: Beo-Jin…
Beo-Jin: *whimpering* William…
Park Kyu: (why isn’t anyone shouting my name? *sigh*)
***
So, I get it. Park Kyu likes Beo-Jin, the elvish sprite of a young lass, and Beo-Jin likes William. And William likes Beo-Jin. And every other woman everywhere likes Park Kyu, but Park Kyu only has eyes for Beo-Jin…… seems like your run of the mill saguek-y romance drama?
…. that said, I DO like the soundtrack. I’ve not bought it yet, but that’s because I’ve only seen parts of the drama series. I am having a rather difficult time getting myself motivated enough to watch it from beginning to end…
Could not agree more about the soundtrack for Tamra, it has some of the most beautiful music ever composed. Now I want to watch it again! Just hearing the music makes my heart happy.

Oh Samsooki, Tamra is anything BUT run-of-the-mill. I promise! I can’t believe you won’t love it if you just give it a chance. But wait for the DVD version!
You are SO going to thank us later. Really, you will. Profusely. Honest!
@ samsooki
The boba from my boba tea almost snorted out my nostril, samsooki. I need to NOT be eating or drinking anything when I read your posts, it’s hazardous to my health.
Yup, you pretty much summed up the love triangle in Tamra……except, Tamra is not really about the 12 year old romance between BJ (”Weeeliam”) and William (”Beoooooo-jin”), its about how a little gem of an island tossed aside by a country and a monarch, is filled with treasures of humanity and hope that rival the heart and soul of anything claiming to be of higher rank or stature.
I found the first 4 episodes to be cute, fun, silly, dopey, and pretty to look at. But around episode 5, the story becomes the Story of Park Kyu, and I’m not talking about his unrequited love for BJ. He grows to love BJ as he grows to love, admire, respect the people of Tamra and the island that they live so hard to sustain. If City Hall was the journey of Shin Mirae, then Tamra is the journey of Park Kyu. Does that tempt you? =-)
I didn’t think I would like Tamra at all, much less feel so moved by this story, even with the chopped up last few episodes, the heart and soul of the tale remains true to the end. If MBC America is airing up to episode 6, if you can watch episode 6 the entire way through, this is the pivotal episode for me when Tamra went from a goofy comedy with heart to a heartfelt ode to an island with comedic elements.
This may be a spoiler, but I don’t think you’ll feel robbed of the moment if I reference a scene here – the scene when BJ is preparing to leave Tamra with William, and she thinks about her family out in the courtyard and prepares food for them tomorrow, AND the confrontation between BJ and PK, and then when BJ is running down that lane and looks back towards her house, I was looking down at the DVD box and going “OMG, this is SO not what I was expecting, and lordy, can I have some more.”
OK, you sold me.
The City Hall reference is a killer one.
@ samsooki
I’m kinda not playing fair – I hate to pull the City Hall card with you. Forgive me, but the analogy suddenly came to me when I was thinking about what really was inspiring and touching about Tamra (and there were so many characters and elements that moved me), but ultimately, it was all Park Kyu.
I don’t know about y’all, but I certainly feel better. All that begging wore me out.
And I think it was TOTALLY fair to play the City Hall card! I think many comparisons can be made between Park Kyu and Jo Gook.
Heading back into Friend now…wish me luck. See you on the other side.
Good luck, unni. Let me know if you need me to send you new socks.
Ok since I have Alzheimer, you guys need to help me- One of you guys wanted this a few weeks ago, but I can’t remember who…anyhoo, I am making korean fried chicken drummets tonite, who’s coming over??? he he
@for my YB fix, I rewatched the 167 episodes (long enough ???)of Pure 19 ( Gu Hye Sun)…something to tide me over til my HTK & GMN are baaack…pig rabbit!!
Well, I made it. I’m a blubbering, sniveling wreck, but I made it to the end. Most of my questions were answered, and the ones I have left don’t matter that much in the grand scheme of things anyway. I don’t hate Joon-seok as much as I did (but I do, kind of). Mostly I just feel so much regret for Dong-soo and Unki and Eun-ji, because their “what-ifs” are so monumental and heartbreaking…ah, I’m so sad. Too sad to form coherent thoughts…maybe later.
cingdoc, I would give anything to try some of your chicken drummets right about now. Sounds like the perfect comfort food to me.
@207 langdon813
Are you ok?? You poor thing…don’t worry YB is tonite; one look of Jeremy and you will smile again. As for the drummettes, well, that’s another matter. My family literally inhaled ALL 3 packages of them. All my kids like them- the middle aged one, the 16 yo and the 12, too. I don’t mind at all. I love it when they enjoyed themselves ( gee, don’t I sound like a typical mother ???)…back to my Smile, you.
(I don’t know how you and @Samsooki can do it. I love to see my Binnie , but I don’t have the urge to see Friends, Legend yet, more so now that I found out how sad it is from you crying sooo much.I told you guys, right? I’m also not watching IRIS- I support the YB (see the related post in DB))
@173 lovenyc52 – Autumn Concerto is only 13 eps. Probably that’s why the pace is brisk, and there’s few, if any, side stories or draggy scenes.
@183 langdon813 – Mu Cheng behaved like a cad in ep. 6 because she wanted Vanness to receive the alternative treatment that would double his chances of survival. Vanness refused to take that treatment because if he did, he would be indebted to the family the mom was trying to match-make him with.
@207 langdon813 –
Well, I made it. I’m a blubbering, sniveling wreck
I’m glad that you were able to finish! I loved the ending, loved loved it! I hope you are able to pull yourself together for YB though….
What I like about Friend, Our Legend is that it seems to be telling its own story, and not one that is made up by a group of writers. The feel of the drama is so organic… I never felt that it was forced or stupid or asked, “ummm, why did they write it that way..?”
Like when Eunji comes back, baby in tow, she doesn’t know what to do, or who to meet but she is strong enough and experienced enough and smart enough to see through all of the bull that would have played her before. Her character is so strong, and yet there is a sadness in her once she sees things as they really are, and so she is determined to survive and have her baby survive (and flourish), and so she does what she has to do, and not necessarily what she would have done in the past… It is almost exactly what I would have done, had I been in her shoes.
And Dong Soo never had a shot at life, but underneath it all, he was still just sweet kid. Mind you, he wasn’t misunderstood, he WAS a sociopath by the end, but you understood why. His dad, his mom, his best friend, his girl, the lack of real opportunities for a guy like him…. none of it was his fault. But everything else, it was responsibility, and he never had the upbringing or the training or the education to know how to live.
I’m not sure I can look at MNIKSS the same way again.
@210, samsooki
Friend definitely doesn’t feel like fiction, you’re absolutely right. I never looked at Dong-soo and thought “Hyun Bin”. It was only at the end of each episode that I would come back to reality and marvel at the fact that it WAS Hyun Bin. I will never watch anything of his again without seeing Dong-soo saying “Please stop. I’ve had enough.” to his killer. I was saying it long before he did.
In the end, I think Eun-ji was the smartest one of all. The littlest, silliest girl in the bunch ended up being the only one who was strong enough to break away. Of course, Daddy’s money helped, but she was astute enough to know that Dong-soo would never be hers, and strong enough to cut her losses and walk away.
I’d love to watch the whole thing over again, but this time from the female perspective.
Happy YB Wednesday y’all!
Can I just state for the record that I am now on Team Jeremy?
Okay, this is sooooo gonna get me egged…..but, I was underwhelmed by today’s episode 11 of YB. Was it just me, or did it seem like the plot was treading water and, other than the ending scene of the episode, we didn’t move forward or cover new ground (same issues, same unspoken tension).
I agree with my unni – only Team Jeremy made sense and deserves my mwah. The boy is happy and he shows it. Everyone else, please take some time to reflect and think about what the heck is going on in your heart and what you are doing!
Sigh, YB is still great, but perhaps I’m a mite spoiled, all of my utmost fave dramas did not have any lull episodes. I’ll wait to read JB’s recaps, because maybe I’m just not understanding the subtleties.
@ langdon813 – hehe.. jeremy really is the most adorable character huh?? i have yet to watch ep 11 but so far he’s the most unangsty and happiest person and i LOVE him for it!! ever since his very first scene where he signed MN’s A.N.JELL fan and winked, i was hooked!! i always look forward his scenes cuz he just lights up the room with his sunshine bubbliness <3
@ langdon813
“I don’t hate Joon-seok as much as I did (but I do, kind of). Mostly I just feel so much regret for Dong-soo and Unki and Eun-ji, because their “what-ifs” are so monumental and heartbreaking…ah, I’m so sad. Too sad to form coherent thoughts…maybe later.”
Uh-oh…that’s what I was afraid of…. *sigh*
Oh, well…Samsooki’s final thoughts still gives me hope that when I finally do get a chance to finish the drama, I won’t be so bothered by the shift…and will be able to just enjoy the quality of the production.
BTW, has anyone checked out the V remake? I haven’t watched the second ep yet.
It was interesting to see the gender role reversals from the original, but it just doesn’t quite feel the same without cheesy special effects, Marc Singer….oh, and Michael Ironside.
@ ockoala
I didn’t notice that much of a different pacing…typical lull before the final stretch of the drama (but then again, YB has never reached crack proportions for me, even though I am enjoying it a lot).
But, yeah, Jeremy is adorable…with the monkey haircut and the adorable little monkey antics, he’s a keeper. Forget Jolie, I wouldn’t mind having him for a pet.
@ hjkomo
Yeah, it may just be my perception. However, my quibble with YB 11 is not with the pacing, which remains brisk, fun, and bopping along. It’s with the plot and character trajectories (all the responsibilty of the writers), which in this episode reminds me greatly of MFL episode 10 (which after the amazing ep 9, should have continued to move forward but instead remained mired in unresolved issues). Does that make sense?
Spoiler rant: the confusion, lack of communication, miscommunication, heated stares between characters – its all been done in the previous few episodes, and done really well and totally angsty, but I’m personally growing impatient with the lead characters at this point. Kudos finally to TK for actually DOING something with MN by the end of the episode.
Rant over. I still love YB to pieces, and episode 12 looks great!
@ ockoala
That makes perfect sense, and I totally agree with your spoiler rant. (SPOILER – SW acting like it was a surprise left me with -> eh, still?! just say it already!)
But since I’m not expecting anything spectacular…and I’ve been occupied with a couple daily dramas (filled to the brim with the above-mentioned, aggravating & blood pressure rise-inducing “confusion, lack of communication, miscommunication, heated stares between characters”), so anything beyond the mediocre looks awfully good to me right now.
@ hjkomo
You are crazy, Cal sister of mine. Daily dramas? Is it this Assorted Gems I’ve been hearing bantered about? Well, I guess we need something to tide us over until…….CHUNO (three way stare down between men so intense, hot, and intensely hot, leading to….. dun, dun, dun, January 6, 2010 – kapow! fade to black).
Oh, and tide us over until that missing part of our drama souls can be completed when we can watch Tamra the way it was meant to be experienced, in its entirety.
@215, hjkomo
I take it the film version had a different perspective? I’m not opposed to watching it too, if it offers more insight into Joon-seok. Maybe not too soon, but eventually.
And you’re right! Jeremy IS a little monkey. I’M IN MONKEY LOVE!! Wouldn’t this drama make for a great drinking game? Knock one back every time someone says “GO MI-NAM”. Wasted in no time.
How will she ever respond to her real name after this??
@218 ockoala –
@ hjkomo
You are crazy
hehe. =)
I’ve known this for a while, as both hjkomo and jb are still crying out “mine” when KJH has already been claimed a while back by me.
@ockoala
I tend to agree with @hjkomo, we need to do something to tide us over the 2x per week of YB ( as mentioned earler, I just finished the 167 (yup, 167 episodes ) of Pure 19 since YB has started a few weeks ago. I just started Hwang Jin Yi to get my JGS fix. O my, watching this drama only confirmed my ICOMYM status. I swear JGS looked like he was 15 yo in this … I mean this was pre eyeliner days, and his voice has not become deep yet. But, one flash of his trademark smile (with dimples) , and I went uhhhh(why? why? why does he have to be sooooo darn cute). Yeah, I think my status in ICOMYM has just promoted
@221, cingdoc
That’s the right attitude!
I think one problem with JGS is that he’s played older in previous roles, so when faced with him in an age-appropriate part, we’re like what the hey? He’s just a baby!
A guy-linered, cross-dressing, questionably-coifed uber-hot baby…hence the “inappropriate” part of the club name. Hey, I know it’s wrong. I just don’t care!
@ cingdoc
“I swear JGS looked like he was 15 yo in this ”
Um, I think he WAS like 16-17 years old when he filmed this. And coupled with how mature (and I don’t mean old at all, I mean sexy, sultry, sensual type of maturity) Ha Ji-won was in real life and in this drama – this was like a reverse Lolita for me to watch. I’m surprise the morality police didn’t go storming the set.
And if I EVER pick up a daily drama – it will most likely be Be strong, Geum-soon! Or if I am in a mental institution, then Temptation of Wife.
@ samsooki
I am michusoo (sp?), too. And from the looks of it, the KJH three-way battle will mostly likely finally be settled only when KJH hisself makes a choice as to whom he wants to belong to.
Someone is posting at (nearly) the same time as me again….I wonder who that could be.
@213 ockoala
I’ve watched it on that Yuku site as well, Without sub titles, right?
And now, so many talks about Autumn concerto, it looks like I have to watch it…
@211 langdon813
I’m so tempted to watch Friend after reading your posts, yet still with a bit of reluctance since I’ve seen the first two episodes and it felt like it was going to be dark and tragic with no way out for the main character. I wasn’t sure if I wanted a ride on a journey witnessing that…
Do the artistry and the mastery of story telling override all my concerns? Shall I go ahead and commit myself?
Oh, and while I was in Japan, in Asahi shinbun(a major newspaper there), there was an ad for Big Hallyu-4’s(Lee Byung-heon, Won Bin and so on) concert at Tokyo Dorme(I guess it’s the biggest performing art center). Tickets are sold as lottery tickets, meaning you can’t just buy one, you have to win to beable to buy one… I can imagine what it’s gonna be like there… All Obasans(have to admit I’m in their age range. But, hey, here’ in the States, no such thing) going totally gaga over 4 gorgeous guys being there(don’t think it matters what they are doing on stage where singing or just standing there).
Anyway, I have to fly down to Sydney later tonight… Can’t believe I have to wait for JB’s recap till I get there. I know as soon as I get to the hotel, I’ll be off to our computer room, plugging in my laptop for my fix.
Thank you JB as always, you are so appreciated.
@ ockoala
Hmmm…I wonder! You know what they say about great minds!
@ cingdoc
I highly recommend Friend, I think it’s brilliant. Just know that you will probably be haunted by it forever. You will NOT recognize your beloved Binnie nor ever think of him in quite the same way again. And I mean that as a compliment.
And…LUCKY! You’re going to Sydney today?!
@ celestialorigin
“in Asahi shinbun(a major newspaper there), there was an ad for Big Hallyu-4’s(Lee Byung-heon, Won Bin and so on) concert at Tokyo Dorme”
So, this news is true, then? Wow, I figured it was not a giant hoax, but enter for a chance to buy a lottery for a chance to win a ticket, jesus the mania. H4 fighting!
Oh, and please see my earlier post #18 in this OT, I posited some possible BTS talk amongst the H4.
@226 langdon813
I know, I have to eventually watch Friend , but if I am already going 3 hankies with Hwang Jin Yi, I think I will go into DEEEEP depression with what I’ve read about my Binnie in Friend. ( I’m usually feel yucky during these Fall/Winter shorter daylights days; I think I need Jeremy kind of cutie to greet me after a long day of work-another source of human suffering
….back to sobbing for Hwang Jin Yi
….and no, I am not leaving the country, it’s @celestrialorigin
Quick question: Do recipients of ICOMYM affection have to be single or available? If so, then Mark Chao is out – confirmed he’s dating Janine Chang (she played Lan Xi-ying in B&W – the forensics tech). Sigh, so young, so much screen presence.
If not, then I guess members graduate when they hit a certain age limit.
Oh, and I searched high and low for this:
http://eplus.jp/sys/web/s/4card/index.html
Someone better bring me some fried chicken for my hard detective work. H4 in the poster flesh.
@ ockoala – wait wait WAIT… MY mark is dating janine?? i thought he was dating the other girl!?!?!? haha ok well i like the forensics girl better anyway lol.. hehe. btw, what IS the age limit of ICOMYM?? 4 years is ok… right??!?! 4 years younger doesn’t fall in ICOMYM category right??
*edit* dang i used a lotta question and exclamation marks.
Dear Joss Whedon:
Fox hates you, Fox really, really hates you and is out to destroy you, why can’t you accept that? After what the studio did to Firefly, that you would even consider bringing a new project to them boggles my mind. Your genius may be before our time, but we who love you just adore you to pieces. So can you stop working for crap TV stations like the WB/UPN/CW or Fox, and just accept your genius may belong on, oh, I don’t know, cable? (see case study in True Blood and Six Feet Under). Sorry about Dollhouse getting cancelled, I’ve already cried all I can cry when Firefly got cancelled, so I’m fresh out of tears here. Oh, and Dollhouse wasn’t your best work, but it was a good effort all around.
@ lovenyc52
Nope, he’s dating Janine. She was the lead in his Color band’s first MV – he handpicked her, wink, wink.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e0rSPCJbUcQ
OOPS! Thanks cingdoc! I was wondering what was going on that you hadn’t even mentioned a trip to Sydney!
Sorry celestialorigin! What I said about Friend was in reply to your post @ 225. Silly me, trying to work and OT at the same time. Gotta get my head back in the game!
Work can wait.
@227 ockoala
I sure did… That’s how my brain registered when seeing the ad in newspaper, Hum, somebody somewhere on Dramabeans mentioned about this… This site has powerful presence!? in my daily life.
@226 langdon813
LOL. Yes, it’s me going down under,(not cingdoc) with a couple of DVDs in my bag since I’m not feeling that well, I might just stay in my room and catch up with some movies. Once I return them to Netflix, it’s gonna be all Kdramas I haven’t seen!!! How exciting! This is also thanks to this site:)
@ ockoala – haha i am actually ok with him dating her.. i liked her. it’s the triad daughter that i was EHHH about. plus i hear that in real life the triad girl is kinda a ditz and MY mark deserves better.
but really, what age range is ICOMYM?? or relatively speaking since i know we all vary
@ lovenyc52
Not sure if you’re asking what age difference constitutes membership in the ICOMYM club (if so, it doesn’t really matter…if you feel pervy about it, then you’re in).
If you’re asking how old everybody in the ICOMYM is, I’m 44. I’ll be 45 next month!
@ celestialorigin, hope you have a wonderful time, feel better!
@ langdon813 – haha thanks for the clarification. i was asking about age range for the manboys
but i like how you put it he he.. and lemme tell you there are WAY too many manboys in my manrem so i guess that makes me one inappropriate lady HA!
@235 langdon813
Why??? why did you have to say your age???Triple Rats, I’m the OLDEST one here now…and No , @Samsooki, I’m pleading the 5th- no way will I give my age out. Let’s just say I’m OLD enough to be President Emeritus of ICOMYM
and not enough to be Baby Ji Hoon’s holmoni (sp??)
@celestrialorigin
***sigh , I WISH I could be on my way to Sydney…no, the only trip I’m taking is to LA Koreantown this weekend to scout out more kdrama DVD(cheap thrill for me; I’m happy because sweet Hubby offers )
@235 langdon813
And thank you for your recommendation for Friend, I’ll get on to it as soon as I have a chunk of time available, considering my all time favorite drama is Berlin Alexanderplatz(astounding!) by Rainer Werner Maria Fassbinder, all time favorite director, Luis Bunuel(That Obscure Object of Desire, Viridiana:absolute master piece and so on), I can take a doze of devastation for a master piece…
Oh, please count me in on as a card carrying member for ICOMYM! Did you know we have something in common? I love Lee Min Kee as well! He’s soooo , don’t know, something… not only he’s an eye candy, there’s more to it. He was on my desktop background for a while and I had to change it because… was that my son making some comments? or my neighbor?
@237 cingdoc
K town is pretty cool , too. I have a friend living there and love to stop by to say hi.
LOL cingdoc…I only outed myself, you’re all free to disclose or not disclose as you choose! I don’t care one bit, it’s just a number.
Now if I HAD to wish for something, it might be to look as good at 44 as Demi Moore does at 47…but I think she’s willing to work harder at it than I am. But then again…I better work on it if I want to convince Lee Min-ki that older women are the way to go. Well, ONE older woman, anyway (eyeing my treadmill thoughtfully….).
Lee Min-ki lovers (you know who I’m talking to): in the article about KHJ being cast as Momo in Kimi wa Petto – the runaway choice by commenters as the perfect k-choice to play Momo was none other than LMK. And if Su Ae is confirmed as the lead, well, that would have been a pairing made in movie co-star heaven.
@ ockoala
I saw that, but didn’t comment because I have no knowledge of the original. But I could get behind that pairing, no problem. As long as Su Ae understands the concept of MINE, I’ll allow it.
@ celestialorigin
Sigh…yep. What LMK has isn’t easily definable, but it certainly works for me.
“I saw that, but didn’t comment because I have no knowledge of the original”
What more do you need to know, unni? He pretends to be her PET, pants, woof, woof, snuggle, begs, et. al. Kinda along the same likes at Zettai Kareshi, but instead of robot boyfriend, you get a boyfriend pretending to be a dog. Not my fave, but it can only come from the mind of a shoujo manga writer, no doubt about that.
counting down the minutes until i can go home and DL YB and IRIS…
haven’t been watching IRIS since the OMG moment at the end of ep 4, but steadily DL and waiting till more are subbed so i can marathon it.
YB gets me in such a twist though. i literally do not want to go to happy hour tomorrow with my coworkers because that means i can’t race home and DL ep 12 right away. i do have priorities you know.
there are way too minutes before i can leave work. way. too. many.
@ hjkomo
You know what? I think I’ve changed my mind. I’m going to watch Friend (the film) tonight, while the drama is still fresh in my mind. Partly that I’m a glutton for punishment, and partly because I don’t think I’m ready to let go of Dong-soo and Joon-seok just yet. And partly out of simple curiosity!
More later!
Calling all ICOMYM women, stay confident with your crushes! Here’s what 60 Minutes Correspondent Andy Rooney (CBS) says about more mature women (> 50 years old):-
> “As I grow in age, I value women over 50 most

@243 lovenyc52
“haven’t been watching IRIS since the OMG moment at the end of ep 4, but steadily DL and waiting till more are subbed so i can marathon it.”
I thought I was the only one >_< My heart almost stopped at the end of 4 and I realized the only way I can watch a drama like IRIS is to marathon it once its over. I can't wait! I've been spoiling myself and I can't understand how anyone can wait for a week in between episodes. I keep rewatching the greatness that was episode 1, I hope it continues til the end.
@ rambutan
ROFLMAO!!!!! LURVE THAT…especially the last line!
@ ockoala
WHAT?!?!?!?! Fox cancelled Dollhouse?!?!?!
With all the crap that’s on network TV these days?!
I’m so sorry, Joss.
@ langdon813
I’m not sure how you’ll respond to watching the movie after watching the drama. The film left viewers (well, at this one viewer) with a deep sense of empathy and loss for Joon Suk…much more than Dong Soo. If the drama made you hate JS, then I don’t think you’re going to have that same reaction to the film’s ending. Just my two cents.
@ Samsooki
그래. 미쳤다.
Don’t mess with the crazy lady.
@ ockoala
Assorted Gems is a weekend drama. It’s written by a writer, known for her dramas filled with histrionics, but this time…she intentionally wrote something different. It may not be getting the highest ratings, but it’s got the best writing of the weekend fare.
The headdesk-inducing daily dramas I was referring to were Everybody Cha Cha Cha and Don’t Hesitate. I started watching EBCCC for Oh Man Seok, and I endured it this long thinking it would be over soon, but they’ve just extended it to 150 eps. That’s 52 eps to go! *headdesk*
Then, some friends suckered me into watching DH for the Lee Sang Woo (we call him hamster boy) eye candy, and I spent the last few days catching up – with frequent headdesking and wishing-someone-would-kill-me-know thoughts.
But I’m actually watching a third daily drama – Enjoy Life, which is actually quite fun. This one is light and full of laughs.
Yes. I am crazy.
@ ockoala, cingdoc
With at least another month left for the Tamna DVD’s to be released and
56 days until…as ockoala so aptly put it – “CHUNO (three way stare down between men so intense, hot, and intensely hot, leading to….. dun, dun, dun, January 6, 2010 – kapow! fade to black).”, I’ve got plenty to keep me busy…
but I’d recommend watching Conspiracy in the Court if you haven’t done so already. I had the day off today and was going to continue with CITC, but I got sidetracked.
Three ICOMYM friends came over, and we watched YB and the first two eps of Invincible Lee Pyung Kang. It is a bit over-the-top and, granted, ILPK is not going to win any awards, but it’s goofy and fun. I actually like the scenes from the past life/folktale better than the modern ones. Think Delightful Girl Chunyang meets the slapstick humor of HGD’s early eps. Plus, get 4 ajummas with dry senses of humor together in one room and let the good times roll.
Oh, and the adorable little girl from Robbers is in it.
@245 rambutan
LOL!!! Thanks for the post, It’s making me feel better already.
Especially the yellow pants part and the infamous last line of all!
Thank God, my flight is delayed and I’m watching partially subbed YB now. I wonder if I’ll get to read JB’s recap before leaving home? If not, thanks to my Iphone, I can still manage that from work…
I’m not into being so obsessed about something, really…. Why, why is this happening to me? Only 2 more weeks and it’ll be over. Unlike so many other people, I’m actually relieved that it’s only 16 episodes.
@247 hjkomo
I’ll fly over to your place. Thank you! I’m assuming I’m one of the three? if not, I’ll still show up in sprit.
@rambutan
I would definitely consider CITC after I’m done with HJY. As for ILPK, ummm, I’m a little confused; the dramawiki described as…golf…etc but the poster showed the characters in period clothes??? So, which one is this-modern vs period?
Good O’ Andy Rooney, so true…don’t mess with older women, we will tell you just the way it is; we would not mince word, he he
@hjkomo
Thanks for the recommendation. I normally do not watch period piece ( although if one of my Manrem is in it, I will make the exception-Ji Jin Hee in Dae Jang Geum (Major Drools for me) and now Hwang Jin Yi for my cutie pie JGS).
@langdon813dong saeng (since **sniff/sob I found out I’m the oldest one here***sob )
Comfort food alert I’m making beef shank/stew tonite…are you coming over for dinner?
@ doublethink101 – i have been scanning the raws just for scenes with TOP so i can just stare at his utter hotness, but i haven’t been watching any of the episodes. This way i don’t feel i’m spoiling myself for the actual series once i continue it. Once i start watching it for reals again it really will be LBH and TOP trying to out-hot each other HAHA… it is SUPREMELY hard waiting an entire week for the next episodes when i’m really involved in a show (like Tamra and YB)… i am not even joking when i say the first thing i do when i get home from work on Wed and Thurs is turn on my laptop and DL YB to watch raw and wait for JB’s subs.
I couldn’t wait and have gone ahead and read the recaps of YB epi 11- Yeah!!!!!
All I have to say is : It’s about time
Now I just have to wait for the English Subbed video online…(the theme song of Jeopardy just played for me)….Wow, are we going have something like “The Final Cup ” of Coffee Prince for Epi 12 ( you know the scene, right @Samsooki?)
I CANT wait…..
That was a fascinating exercise. You guys should see my desk, it’s littered with post-its where I’ve jotted down notes and questions. What a nerd. Anyway, here are my rambling thoughts on Friend the film and Friend, Our Legend, the drama.
WOW Moment:
Someone may have mentioned this, but it didn’t click if so…I didn’t realize until now that the film and drama were directed by the same person! There are just so many scenes that are completely identical, frame by frame. I believe this director got the best do-over opportunity in the world because in my opinion, the film is very good but the drama is brilliant.
Nagging Question:
What led Joon-seok to follow Hyung-doo in the first place? Why did he chase after his car and commit himself to him? Is it simply because Hyung-doo was assuming command from Joon-seok’s father? I wondered about this in the drama, and it wasn’t explained in the film either, unless I missed something. There’s a scene when they’re all still children playing at the docks when Joon-seok is introduced to Hyung-doo by some random gangsters driving by. But that’s it, until much later when Joon-seok is a drug addict and meets Hyung-doo in his father’s house then impulsively runs after him as he’s leaving.
Very Cool Fact:
The same guy played Sang Gon in the film AND the drama! I confess to squeeing about that a little bit.
Best Scene (in both)
The moment after Dong-soo tells Joon-seok that he’s going off on his on, and then walks away into darkness. Literally and figuratively just walks into complete and total darkness. I’ve got chills just thinking about it. Not only that, but Dong-soo decides to break away from Joon-seok on the very day that he needs him the most. “Dong-soo, now I’m an orphan.” He didn’t know at the time how true that statement was about to be.
Actor Comparison
Dong-soo – Hyun Bin took that role and made it his own. I can definitely see the influence of Jang Dong-gun and of course, the character of Dong-soo was fleshed out about 1000% in the drama, but I’m having a hard time thinking of another actor who so completely and utterly transformed himself the way Hyun Bin did. He terrified me and broke my heart at the same time.
Joon-seok – Yoo Oh-sung was wonderful. I honestly think I preferred his Joon-seok to Kim Min-joon’s, although I think KMJ was very good.
One of the things I loved most about the drama is that we get to see how strong the bond between Joon-seok and Dong-soo was and how that bond came to be forged, which makes it that much more gut-wrenching when it’s broken. In the film, JS and DS don’t really seem to be all that close, so their separation doesn’t feel quite so tragic. The closer relationship in the film seems to be between Joon-seok and Sang-taek.
Something else I appreciated in the drama that didn’t happen in the film is that, only later (when it’s much, much too late) do we see that Joon-seok did occasionally try to prevent Dong-soo from going down the same path. What we do see in both is that when Sang-taek comes to Joon-seok wanting to run away to Seoul to live the carefree life of a young gangster, Joon-seok scolds him and sends him right back home, saying that he wished that just once in his life someone had done the same for him. But to Dong-soo, he never verbalizes the same advice. He merely interferes every time Dong-soo gets in a fight, telling only Jin-sook that the reason he does so is because he doesn’t want Dong-soo to be injured and risk losing his boxing career, which is his only hope of escape. How different might both their lives have been if he had just spoken up and said those words to Dong-soo?
The Women
Non-existent in the film; not fleshed out nearly enough in the drama. I said earlier today that I’d love to watch this whole thing over again, but from the female perspective. I really would.
I’m going to stop here, as I think this is probably the longest post I’ve ever done on DB. For anyone who got past “That was a fascinating exercise”, thank you for sticking with me.
@langdon813
Girl, you are getting consumed by Friend. Breathe slowly..deeply. You should have come over for your comfort food. Now, shift gear and go see Jeremy
@ langdon813 – lemme jump on that Team Jeremy wagon now… i mean i always had a soft spot for him since his very first scene, but i just LOVED him in this episode. from his giddiness over finding out MN’s secret to the grocery shopping and his thwarted hugs to the delight of being badminton partners with MN… all of it. loved it. love him. don’t even mind the dumpling on his head anymore. i want a Jeremy of my own now. (this is not saying i don’t want me some TK smexiness, cuz really, how could you NOT want that?!?!?) talk about ICOMYM… sigh.
Don’t laugh, but I couldn’t wait for the subbed version of YB and decided to watch the raw version. Thank you JB since I have read your recaps, I “understood” most of the episode. Besides, after watching soooo many kdrama, I picked up a few ( ok , a couple Korean words/phrases)
I will still rewatch the episode when the subbed version is up, he he
I would post in the YB Ep 11 recap thread but it’s like jumping in front of a moving train. I’m just going to hide in the OT like I always do.
All I can say about Ep 11 is…LOVED Jeremy. Uh, that’s all I got.
Two beautiful young people, obviously in love but as yet completely oblivious to that fact, screaming their heads off, all of their conflicts and misunderstandings and longing for each other leading them to this inevitable moment. Finally, FINALLY, one of them makes a move. All of this passion must surely culminate in a searing kiss, with hands tangled up in hair, arms tightly wrapped around each other, closer…closer…ever so close, so that now we can see…
Two department store mannequins, frozen in place.
WHAT. THE. HELL.
@256 lovenyc52
YES I agree!!!! I mean on one hand I love the fact that HTK and GMN finally kissed, but kids will always be kids, they are certainly not Shin Mirae and Gookie. Now , THAT’s a kiss- passionate, literally STEAMING up the windows of the car. I meaned I almost felt intrusive when MiGook kissed
@ celestialorigin
The more, the merrier.
@ cingdoc
You’re certainly not alone in watching raws, rather than waiting for subbed episodes. Two of the other women I watched it with (both older than you), who don’t know Korean, do the same. And one pretty much knew everything that was going to happen before it actually did. She’s not psychic, she just watches a lot of dramas.
@ langdon813
“Two beautiful young people, obviously in love but as yet completely oblivious to that fact, screaming their heads off, all of their conflicts and misunderstandings and longing for each other leading them to this inevitable moment. ROFL!!!!
I had the same reaction!
I had already watched the preview, so I knew it was coming. The other three women watching with me hadn’t, so they all gasped and squealed at the kiss.
@ cingdoc
ILPK is mostly set in modern times…at a golf resort. Nam Sang Mi is the course designer’s daughter. Ji Hyun Woo is a golfer and the resort owner’s son.
But a portion of the drama takes place in 6th century Goguryeo with the folktale from which the characters are based. I’m not sure if they’ve been reincarnated or what, but each ep begins and ends with the sageuk segments, and both stories seem to enfolding simultaneously.
@ockoala, hjkomo, langdon813 (my 3 DB angels) et al
Hi gals, I’m just amazed how y’all find time for OT, family, work, drama etc etc. I have such bad time management that I can’t even finish reading all the posts on OT and JB’s other write-ups let alone post.
I always try to find some time to skim through OT and make sure everyone is well and enjoying life to the full. I will chuckle to myself seeing how much fun and banter y’all have and have a silly smile all the time I am reading.
@223 ockoala
So very happy you have joined Team Park Kyu! I highly recommend Be Strong Geum Soon. Hope you will start soon. BSGS was my 1st daily drama and I bought a bootleg version (confession time) with only Chinese audio and Chinese subs (which I can’t read except for 1-10, moon, star, sky, love, LOL) and I fell in love with KJH! To this day I still plan to buy a set with Kaudio (waiting to see it with KJH’s voice) and eng subs. Even with THAT set I have rewatched favorite parts countless times. Oh, with 163 eps, I had to make a list where my fav parts are, and there are plenty.
And, hope boy koala gets well soon. I imagine him to be as cute as Geum Soon’s boy.
@langdon813
Have you watched BSGS since it has your I lub u LMK? Btw, do you understand Mandarin or you do have to depend on Eng subs? Thanks for the recommendation on Autumn’s Concerto. I am downloading it now and plan to keep and watch it to fill the YB withdrawal void like @epyc.
Re: YB. I am like everyone else ‘angstying’ over this beautiful drama. Yes, me too LOVED Jeremy, he’s my highlight of ep11.
@ simplesim
Be Strong, Geum-soon – it’s been sitting at my mom’s for 2 years now, I really want to watch, but I’m just not a daily drama type of gal. Someday, I continue to say to myself.
@ langdon-unni
Amen, on that YB episode ender. A kiss is not a kiss is not a kiss – not all kisses are equal and squeal/swoon worthy.
I’m gonna mini-vent here in OT, because I’m just too lazy to read 220 comments in the YB recaps: now that I understand what was said in the episode, I have to re-affirm my earlier rant on ep 11. It was treading ground as all characters continue to do the same things they did in earlier episodes – and becauses its been done before, it loses its impact here for me!
MN loses her hairclip (check), TK finds hairclip and surreptitiously returns it (check), SW prepares for big reveal at fancy restaurant (check), HY gathering intel on MN from the stylist (check), TK dragging MN away (check), TK-MN cute scene and conversation rife with hidden meanings (check), Manager telling TK about MN’s supposed feelings for SW (check) – and many more.
And honestly, I enjoyed this episode of YB, it’s not bad, but this is what happens when the expectations from the earlier episodes have set the bar so high. Also, I would compare this to the MFL situation of re-treading of plot devices (butler/not butler, hair clip/lose hair clip/find hair clip), but here it bothered me even more, because my god these issues should be resolved and we can move on to the unresolved bigger fish in the pond.
Anyhoo – I’ve been a total drama nazi this morning – calling my sister and going, “have you started, have you started watching Tamra? you have to watch, I need to talk to you about it. I need you to understand why I love it so. Park Kyu, gahhhhh!!!”
@259, simplesim
Hey there, long time no see!
I have not seen BSGS yet…I do intend to one of these days, I just have to work up the courage to tackle it! I have 3 weeks off in December (not that work really ever gets in my way, honestly. As evidenced by my constant presence here at DB). But I’m thinking that might be the perfect time for it. Spending that much time with my I LUB YOU sounds like the perfect activity for the holiday season! Plus, there’s the whole Kang Ji-hwan cherry on top of the cupcake.
I do have to rely on English subs unfortunately. And I’m glad you’re enjoying Autumn’s Concerto! I ranted about it earlier this week but I think I was just in a bad mood. I’m enjoying Vanness a lot.
@ hjkomo
“WHAT?!?!?!?! Fox cancelled Dollhouse?!?!?!
With all the crap that’s on network TV these days?!”
Yesh, they cancelled Dollhouse – it wasn’t my fave Joss, but even my least fave Joss show/episode is better than 99.9% of everything else on TV right now.
And I’ll definitely put CITC on my to-watch list. But I have another saguek ahead in line……hee hee, I bought Damo!!! And it’s arriving shortly and I can settle into my comfy nest and watch it on TV and experience its glory. I’ve heard too much good things about it not to be giddy with excitement.
re: YB (of course)… haha so i know this really has not much to do with the plot but i loved when they were in the grocery store and were recreating all their endorsement CFs. and jeremy is obviously SO excited while TK and SW are like, omgwhy!? and their ramyun dance was so funny!!! i rewatched it a bunch and you see TK trying to not laugh at that scene. and then the Angel Chocolate with TK looking really model-esque, SW looking like he couldn’t care less and then there’s darling Jeremy with a serious face promoting the chocolate (well this is what i’m assuming he’s doing since i didn’t understand it haha). And MN loving every bit of it. And the entire supermarket trip you just see TK scowling in his hoodie. HA! <3
Have you seen these new pictures, hjkomo?
http://www.kbs.co.kr/drama/chuno/hunting/index.html
I call it “Two Beggars and a Princess.”
I like the third picture where Jang Hyuk playfully pokes Oh Ji-ho with a stick and grabs Lee Da-dae, and then the fourth picture, OJH has grabbed the stick and the girl (like a “oh no you didn’t”). Tee hee, I snicker. Hope this is no foreshadowing of the plot (though in the final picture, you can kinda tell – kdrama photoshoots aren’t exactly too cryptic).
The Chuno photoshoot really reminds me of the What Happened in Bali photoshoot – in that its just the leading actress with two amazing guys (with no one else from the drama involved).
It’s already out?!

@ ockoala
Ep. 12 was better.
“Have you seen these new pictures, hjkomo?”
Most definitely.
I call it “Two Beggars and a Princess.”
I like X’s description of their wardrobe – the Southern District Tenant Slave Spring-Summer Collection.
There’s a whole group of Chunojummas waiting to scrub the dirty fellas down.
The plan was already set in motion months ago. Care to join us?
@ langdon813
I forgot to ask – was Sang Taek’s role prominent in the drama?
Me! Me! I wanna be a Chunojumma!!
I think my eyes just melted.
Ahem.
@265, hjkomo
Sang-taek was very prominent in the drama, and he and Joon-seok were very close (Dong-soo and Sang-taek, not so much). But in the drama, Sang-taek and Joong-ho were clearly in the lower echelon to Joon-seok (Boss) and Dong-soo (Second Boss). The most symbiotic relationship in the drama is between Dong-soo and Joon-seok, absolutely.
@ hjkomo
Okay….takes off my team Park Kyu sticker and headgear….I’m a newly certified Chunojumma!
I also have to hike my behind over to Soompi’s Chuno forum, like you said, everyone is there and I’m wayyy behind the curve.
Also, my description pales in comparison to Mr. X’s. Where I can buy the collection for ockoala hubby? Does it come with either JH or OJH’s abs, or at least their ab regimen?
And don’t start scrubbing without me, okay, promise?
As for YB episode 12, yes, I agree, it was better……than episode 11. And I think I was too kind to episode 11, SW pisses me off, and the way epi 10 ended, it was also just like episode 7, except with people around. Sorry, I adore YB, so I am angry at myself for being annoyed with it. Sigh, I’m being a nitwit.
As for Chuno, you know, I’m totally not fangirling over how hot, or sexy, or intense the leading men are (which they are), but what gets me is how GOOD the drama potentially can be, and how the trailer is already giving glimpses of it. I’m excited about the drama, not about any star on screen, but about meeting the characters and their stories. Which is why Chuno is a win already, it’s gotten me hooked with pure honest-to-goodness story.
@ langdon813
Grab a loofah.
@ ockoala
I can’t agree with you more on Chuno. The eye candy is just a bonus.
(cont’d) @ ockoala
Okay, I lied. The eye candy isn’t merely a bonus. It’s drool heaven.
Plus, the youngest male actor is what…28?…with the rest in their 30’s, so we ICOMYM Club members don’t have to feel like perverts. Win-win!
Of course, it’s Chuno’s story that hooked me as well. I love that it’s not about the glory of some King or Queen or country…it’s going to show the bleakness of the human condition and the wretchedness of these poor souls caught up in the turbulence of the times. Add to that, a beautiful and tragic love story, kick-ass action, and great directing & score…and the cast is full of great actors (and my reservations about Oh Ji Ho have lessened a bit). Ah, it’s so hard waiting. 55 days left!
Hurry up and watch Damo…then join us with CITC.
Btw, SW was better today.
@ langdon813
In response to the question you asked me elsewhere –
While watching YB yesterday, one of the people I watched it with (who is from Korea) mentioned JGS’s bridgework and how the general consensus there is that he looked better without it and that it makes his facial expressions too stiff. This led to a discussion about the prevalence of plastic surgery in the entertainment industry (even with men)…so much so, that it’s not even noticeable on most because the baseline so-called “natural” look of comparison has changed….and only the “extreme” cases are noticeable now.
So, today, while watching YB 12, I was getting distracted from the story because I kept staring at his side profile.
daaaaaaaaaamn, LDH is rocking the house with Oh Ji Ho….. in Chuno (추노)….
I mean, I knew LDH was going to be in it, but now that I see the pics, wow….
on the flip side, Oh Ji Ho as a near-palindrome and a spartacus wannabe, not sure… I might end up like him better as a smarmy corporate suit in Super Rookie over “Im Spartacus” here….
@ hjkomo – at the risk of sounding dumb, what’s the bridgework you’re referring to on JGS? do you mean he got his nose done? This is my first experience with JGS so i don’t know if his features looked different before.
Almost finished with YB ep 12 raw…. and there are parts where i’m just like WHAT ARE THEY SAYING?!?! WHY DO I NOT UNDERSTAND KOREAN?!?! it’s very frustrating. like, i THINK i know what’s going on based on what i already know of the story and characters and where the story is headed…but still, not knowing what is actually being said is supremely frustrating to me. cannot wait till JB’s recaps so that i can stop the guessing game haha.
Wait, there was a girl in those pictures?
Huh. Must have missed that.
@ hjkomo
Laughing at my earlier post where I answered your Friend question. My husband kept trying to talk to me (while I was trying to ignore him to post my reply), Rereading it now I realized I used the word drama about a dozen times.
@Samsooki!!!!!(my fellow Coffee(Prince)Nut
I just saw the first part of YB epi 12 (raw version). I don’t know know what they are saying, but there’s one scene totally reminded me when Choi Han Kyul hugged (the boy) Ko Eun Chan to “check” his feelings, and how he kept denying that he loves him(her).
Geesh, I NEED the subbed version…breathe, breathe, it will come later, go clean the kitchen, that’s right, keep yourself busy….urghhhhh
Oh my! I think I have to pin the badge on again.
If Shin-woo had been like THIS, I don’t know if our prickly Tae-kyung would stand a chance.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jhl91Q6n_N4
Look at that grin!
@ cingdoc – i watched it raw and it really killed me not knowing what was being said and just hoping that my interpretation was right haha.. but i just read JB’s recaps and it helped a TON… now all i gotta do is wait for the subs… apparently we’re not allowed on viikii during this period cuz the subbers can’t sub? i had NO idea and was confused as to why the page kept freezing. and when it FINALLY loaded i read all the messages that said for everyone to keep off viikii or they would stop subbing. i got scared and bolted.
@JB,
THANK YOU FOR THE RECAP. I kept checking and voila,you wonderful person you are; you are my favorite person on Earth now, he he. I only watched the first 10 min raw, so now I can find out what kind of “garbage” that mean He Yi has said . Thank you , again
Oh lordy, cingdoc, sounds like you’re as frightened of the YB recaps comments section train as langdon (and myself) are.
OT feels very safe and warm to me.
@ hjkomo (and langdon and samsooki)
I found something even better for Chuno
http://english.kbs.co.kr/Entertain/EntertainmentGallery/view.html?No=275
It’s in English, and the first picture is……Rain in Ninja Assassin-like.
Anyways, my favorite captions are a tie between the following:
“He showcased his impressive abdominal muscles, grabbing the spotlight.”
and
“The profound look in Oh Ji-ho’s eyes raised everyone’s expectations about his role.”
@ ockoala
I was wondering why the choco-abs pics weren’t on the official site.
I recommend checking the soompi thread. The Chunoholics and Chunojummas there are so quick to find all relevant information (and pics – there are more!). *wooh…need to cool myself down now*
@ lovenyc52
Yeah. I wouldn’t have noticed if it hadn’t been pointed out to me yesterday, and I kind of wish it hadn’t…because that’s all I see now.
@ langdon813
“Oh my! I think I have to pin the badge on again.”
My dear, I’ve had my badge pinned on since the first ep. He is scrumptious!

Thanks for the goodies. After hearing him say that he gets recognized on the streets by schoolkids these days but not by adults…I feel even more pervy.
Other tidbits: He thinks his eyes (double eyelids) are his best feature, and he would like to play the bad boy in a future acting role. (Yes, please!!!)
Another funny bit about yesterday at my house – someone said, “They can have Tae Kyung. We’ll take Shin Woo!” and we all laughed in agreement. Then, at the restaurant scene, when SW was practicing what he was going to say to MN in the mirror, the comment was – Nice pants!
Like I said, good times…
@ ockoala – the YB comments section really is scary!!!! after i finished reading the recaps it was already at like 20 comments, and then after i commented i was #39… it’s ridic. i will be staying here in OT where it’s nice and safe
i have to agree with you that ep 12 was better than ep 11 cuz some stuff is FINALLY getting resolved (ok not resolved persay, but i feel it’s moving again. there’s a light at the end of the TK/MN tunnel that’s beginning to shine!) but how come SW pissed you off? i’m just curious cuz i actually liked him more in this ep when he didn’t have perfectly controlled emotions. i hate to compare, but when he’s that perfect he reminded me of quiet gentle rui (oguri shun’s rui, not KHJ’s bored face jihoo) and as much as i adored rui, i loved him most when he got angry. angry rui = hot rui
hence angry SW = hot SW
@YB episode 12
in a simple but elegant dress. She came through as the “real” Princess to all the guys- this is my personal take on this. I’m sure with the subbed dialogues ( in addition to your GREAT recap, JB) I will get a more in depth interpretation. In another word, I CAN’T WAIT TIL THE SUBBED VERSION AND NEXT WEEK !!!!! (I should have waited til the whole drama was done and marathon it… the weekly wait is killing me
If it wasn’t for the magnanimous JB’s recap, I would have angst-ing for a couple of days before the subbed version d/l. I just finished watching the raw version, and WOW….ZOWIE.
I just noticed a nice “comparison” /”contrast” the Hong’s sisters have portrayed in the episode- He Yi might have all the “Princessy” gown and what not, but she actually appeared “dowdy”/ non attractive to me. Go Mi Nam, on the other hand, was “stunning”(Shin Woo, you can close your mouth, now, he he
See, I had the opposite reaction and wondered why they dressed GMN up like my 90-year old granny. From the neck up…ravishing. But unless that was meant to be a costume, that dress was seriously fugly to me. And the cardy? OMG! Was she being punked?
@ cingdoc and langdon813 – haha i think i fall somewhere inbetween you two about the dress. neck up, gorgeous. neck to waist – eh. can do without. but i absolutely loooooved the skirt of the dress with it’s asymmetrical ruffling. but it just goes to show that the characters’ inner beauty shows through the clothes. even when MN is in her sleepwear, the beauty of her pure heartedness shines through. i may be just a tiiiiny bit biased as i actually like the actress PSH and have zero fond feelings for Uee haha.
I do covet those red polka-dot pj’s GMN was wearing when she woke up to see Pig Rabbit. I’d look for similar ones online right now but I’m almost to the point of holding my eyelids open with my fingers, so I think I’ll go to bed and resume this conversation in tomorrow’s OT.
Night all!
*sigh
I feel better now that I’ve reread the recaps of epi 12…have to hit the pillow since it’s the long weekend of work for me (again). Yikes, I just realized tomorrow is the 13th. I just hope I won’t be swarmed with emergencies like last week. Who am I kidding? I know EVERY Friday will be loaded with last minute, have to be seen NOW even though the problems started…last week, problems. I’m trained for it, but now that I’m hooked on OT Friday’s, I WANT to come home at decent hours so that I can chat with you guys***sigh** I’m getting bad! Thank God when I’m at work I don’t think about kdrama( that much) since I’m too busy with the cases.Goodnite every one…dress warm @ockoala and @lovenyc52, I think we’re actually be below 70F !!!!!
