If initial reports are confirmed, Jang Geun-seok — a hot commodity these days — may soon be back on television in his next project. It’s an adaptation of Mary Stayed Out All Night [매리는 외박중], a manhwa that comes from the creator of Full House‘s original manhwa (it’s a working title for the drama, which will air on KBS).
Jang had planned for his next role to be the movie adaptation of You’re My Pet, but due to production delays on that project, he may well be back in a drama first. Note: This article talks about the casting as a done deal, but others are saying Jang is “a strong possibility.” I’d say take it all with a grain of salt.
Jang’s management was initially reported to say, “He is planning to return with the drama Mary Stayed Out All Night in November. The character and script haven’t been decided in concrete detail yet, so he is preparing slowly, and will try hard to show a different appeal in this role.” A subsequent article backtracked and said, “He is looking favorably at the role.”
Mary Stayed Out All Night deals with a woman (the titular Mary) who decides she is through with dating, but then strikes up a romance with a “dangerous-looking but charming” death-metal band vocalist. A “lively, upbeat” love triangle develops with a third character, a “perfect type” of man who’s got it all goin’ on in terms of looks, skills, personality, and family background.
Jang Geun-seok just played a pop group vocalist in last year’s hit drama You’re Beautiful. He’ll again play a musician here, albeit a harder-edged rocker than the idol star of the previous series.
This project will be a co-production between Korea’s KBS Media and Japan’s ACC Korea and will be written by In Eun-ah, who wrote the drama phenom Goong and the cotton-candy-sweet Love & Marriage. A director has yet to be confirmed. There are a few stars in contention for the Mary role, though we haven’t been given any hints thus far.

There’s no meaning to it, besides the human desire to make your mark first. To boldly go where no man has gone before, so to speak. The first person to walk on the moon. The first dog to pee on the bush. The first person to write a comment, so everyone can see that they were there first, etcetera. I’ve done it before. I am ashamed.

Anyway, I guess I could say I’m excited to see him again but we’ll see. I’m not sure about the story line but when I looked at the art and stuff it really reminded me of NANA? Idk, why. Maybe the music aspect of the story and the “innocent” Nana that had many relationships.

gah, i always get excited when manga/manhwa adapts into live-action dramas, but it’s a shame that they always don’t turn out as well as expected (well, with the exception of HanaDan and Nodame Cantabile).
Anywho, i have mixed feelings on JSG taking this role, on one hand it’d be interesting to see him play a hard-core death metal band vocalist, but on the other, i don’t think he can quite pull it off. meh, oh well, i will probably watch it anyway if he ended up being casted.
first thing that came to mind is the live action movie detroit metal city. I guess i could see him dressing up like kiss and belting out songs in a a rough, gravelly voice. ugh! i can’t get the image out of my mind now!!

jang geun suk needs to try something new and radically different if he wants to challenge himself as an actor. How many times has he played a musician or something related? He was one in You’re Beautiful, Beethoven’s virus, and in the movie DoReMiFaSoLaSiDo (which ironically, had him as a member of a rock grouo). Time to break the mold a bit JGS!!!

Have to agree with you…I don’t think it’s a wise decision from JGS & his management. I love the dude,but he needs to grow,NOT typecasted. Can we have the Hwang JinYi’s JGS back?? He acted SO WELL there.

My guess is that if Jang Geon Suk agrees to do this, he’ll end up as a V-Kei frontman, living out his childhood dream as Hyde. If so, Hee Chul will need to be cast as a Gackt-wanna be, and then we can have our requisite Hyde/Gackt yaoi service moments.

one of the ex-TRAX boys is busy with acting these days…he’s the pretty Gumiho hunter in MGIA Gumiho… when I’ve read the article my first thought was Rose as lead-but well I don’t think his acting could do the trick yet …
however JGS can really act… and pull off Yaoi are beautiful …with his pretty face and his drag diva act a few years ago….. waw that was a bonus but can I fangirl about both?

Korean death metal exists (swear! if it’s on Youtube, it has to be true!), but uhhh the Korean death metal fanbase and the Korean drama fanbase rarely meet up for coffee.

I got into the dramas because I was trying to learn things to tell my step-son about so he could be proud that he was part Korean, but you have to admit that the dramas kind of only show one side of Korean life.
He loves NuMetal (probably my influence), so he’s never been able to get into any of the music I’ve been able to find. Although I almost got excited once when I caught him listening to f(x), but then I realized that he was watching it on mute. ::sigh:: teenagers.
As much as this would excite me, I have to be firm and say a big “damn it”. Another music role so close to YAB. I’m sorry, but if that doesn’t pigeonhole him as music role material, I don’t know what will.
Will he gets offers for anything else in the future? Risky move. He should have left music roles alone for a while, with so many fans eager to typecast him.

I hope I’ll like him in this one. I was rooting for Shin Woo hyung (till he proved himself to be gutless and slow) even though I watched the drama for JGS. I hope it’s fun. I feel bad for the “perfect man.” He rarely wins in love when in comes to dramas, outside of All About Eve.

I think if this does happen..he will be pretty good, he was a total psycho in The Case of Itaewon Homicide…although the movie itself left me unsatisfied. He has what that terrible drama “Style ” calls..”EDGI”..lol..so he’ll pull of the rocker look wonderfully
