Ratings report: 49 Days, Best Love, Romance Town

All right, now that the recap frenzy has lulled, I can take a moment to look at how the ratings are shaping up for the new May trendies, specifically the Wednesday-Thursday shows. I haven’t been following the numbers too closely because they’d been fairly static for a while, but with one just about to end and two new ones entering the fray, it’s time for some shakeup.

SBS’s 49 Days has enjoyed the first spot for a few episodes now, and this week welcomed its highest numbers to date: a 14.8% on Wednesday and a 15.4% for Thursday. [SPOILERS] Things are heating up with only one week to go and the conflicts coming to a head as Ji-hyun and Kang recognize their feelings for each other, angst about her 49 days ending, thwart the baddies from destroying her father’s company, and worry about how to keep Ji-hyun alive. [/END SPOILERS] Good stuff there.

Also heating up is the Hong sisters rom-com on MBC, Best Love, which is quickly catching up and will probably leap into first place once 49 Days takes its bow.

Best Love

Last week, Best Love premiered in third place with an 8.4% while 49 Days and Thorn Birds both scored 13.2% ratings. It improved but remained in last place with Episode 2 with a 9.7%, as Thorn Birds aired its finale (14.2%) and 49 Days pulled up with a 14.7%.

So this week’s movement up to 12.1% and 13.9% bodes well for its future, as the Hong sisters keep delivering the funny and the actors keep delivering hilarious and endearing performances. (Seriously? So cute and wacky. “GIVE ME BACK MY PANTIES!”)

Last but not least (well, it IS the least, but only in a strictly numbers sense) is Romance Town on KBS, which premiered its first two episodes this week. Its first drew an 8.6%, and its second recorded an 8.2%. Not bad, and it still has room to move up if 49 Days’ successor drama isn’t up to snuff — that’ll be something to watch for when City Hunter also joins the lineup in two weeks. On one hand, that drama looks terrible. On the other, its tone is different from the other two rom-coms, so it has a shot at drawing an audience in the mood for something more action-filled. Or crazily — and schizophrenically — plotted. Or just chock full of Lee Min-ho.

I haven’t seen Romance Town yet but I hear it’s got an interesting tone that’s a little bit different from the standard romantic comedy vibe, so I’m holding out hope for it. Although the part of my brain dying for some sleep is hoping it tanks, frankly. But who says you need sleep to be able to function? Or recap properly? Fair warning: If the next recap comes out unintelligible or sorely lacking crucial words and/or logic, you’ll know what happened.

As a Best Love fan, am sorta disappointed you didn't mention that Best Love hit 17.1%, taking first place in wed/thurs timeslot. It's only in Seoul, but still. It's a huge progress.

Yes for the Hong sisters! I was really hoping Best Love will continue the success of Gumiho, because these two writers really deserve it. Although I was most looking forward to Lie To Me, Best Love has now taken the #1 spot in my list, closely followed by 49 days.

Too late, it has already been happening. But, because we love you two (jb and fri) so much, and because at this point we understand the process of recapping and pretty much understand your writing styles, I can honestly say I barely notice. HAHAHA. But oh boy, how are you ladies going to survive past May? Know we appreciate the effort you put into running Dramabeans and no matter what, we can understand if you guys decide not to try to recap everything.

With Love,

Comeon drama Gods, we need some big hits for 2011.

I'm raising my hopes for the Sung Yuri starrer -I've long waited for another drama with her after Swallow the Sun. I've only read a first impression recap sort of ..

I watched the raw episode and what I can tell is it covered A LOT ! Though the backgrounder might still be out there somewhere to be explained as the episodes move along .

Romance Town this early seem to be discussing the everyday life from the point of view of the domestic helps and their employers . I expect the episodes to be not only colorful but thick interpretations not flat renditions of each domain .

i think cable dramas are on a different scale in terms of ratings, because you have to subscribe to the service. Not everyone has this channel, unlike MBC, KBS, and SBS. For cable dramas, getting 2% would be considered a huge hit, while it would be an abysmal failure for broadcast dramas - so it wouldn't be fair to compare.

Yaaay for 49 Days ratings continuously on 1st rank! :(

So deserves it. Solid and chameleon actings (esp. from LYW & JIW), endearing character (for HK, JK, S), great chemistry (LYW with all the guys), brilliant plot, tight & keep moving forward plot, many nice & very suitable OST songs, beautiful cinematography.

I add 1 more positive in this drama: the various kinds of transcendent relationships being portrayed, beyond life and death: lovers, families, friends, sisterhood bond without blood ties, second chance for love.

agree! I think 49 days really stands out by being a mix of a romance / human drama. People who aren't into romance can still enjoy it because the romance is secondary to larger issues. You think it sucks that your guy's mom opposes your union? Try being in a coma/dead! Now that REALLY sucks!

I think 49 Days is a drama I will look back on in the future and it's success will make sense (unlike the other "hit dramas" where I'll revisit and wonder why I loved them so much in the first place).

Definitely going on my [To Be Remembered Forever] list.

Aw, why do you think City Hunter will be terrible? I watched the trailer and was pleasantly surprised, it looks pretty refreshing and interesting and I like the Lee Min Ho and Park Min Young pairing more than I imagined, however its just my opinion...so does this mean you won't recap it?? *pretty please?*

I always hate judging shows by ratings but it is nice to know what the rest of the country feels about a show lol

On the other hand, I'm really enjoying Romance Town. :-D So, I can count on that to get me out of my 49 Days finale slump.

I'm torn betwn Best Love and Lie To Me 'cos both have strong scripts, other than Romance Town I'm sorry to say I've fast-forward boring parts for it's a weaker script.

I did like Jung Kyeo-woon's shower scene in RT's ep.02. *nosebleed* Oh you smexy thick hairy legs, you! Har-har-har! I'm anticipating a Cinderella story nonetheless.

I've watched ep 1 & 2 of Romance Town. So far, not impressed. Storyline not very coherent. I've also watched Manny for abt 5 ep before dropping it cos i was bored by the story n irritated by female lead character. 49 Days is the best (ever) and I'm enjoying how Best Love n Lie to Me are unfolding. Big thank you to JB n GF for recapping quite a few of these + 1N2D. Look forward to City Hunter if only to oogle at Lee Min Ho :p

I'm sorry, but about Romance Town storyline not being coherent? Not true. I think you didn't pay attention very well... because how can you say this about RT and like LTM? Even with YEH I find the drama a mess and I'm not impressed and getting bored by the incoherent storyline.

Even a article of 10asia talks good about Romance town, and another blog onwer says it has the best writting of the may dramas. But well everyone has their own opinions and taste.

I watched all May drama, still no plan to drop any of them yet. Talking about the underdog, I watched the premiere and the following ep of Romance Town, was very surprised by the quality and how it's beautifully filmed, and the ost was so spot on. The writing was good too.

This drama shows the household workers(aka maids, housekeepers, personal assistants etc..) in a delight meaningful way, broaden my knowledge of how these ppl work for the rich. Even when they all gathered after their work hours were fun, gossiping of their boss didn't feel cheap but enjoyable. It's like they have dignity and respect for what they are doing, but at same time, feeling wary about their boss's life too. Each maid in each house has her own story with the boss, quite lovely love-hate relationship (which, quite true).

But what I really find amazing was the male lead (never saw him before), he portrays such a genuine simple gentlemanly chaebol. I couldn't help but falling in love with him, he has this vibe of gentleness with the female lead, such good chemistry on screen. Her Cinderella moment was so beautiful, the moment he touched her hair and smiled really swoon-worthy. I decided then this is my new love found. And his little brother added a plus, so cute.

The food preparation sequences of each maid in each house in the morning were done beautifully and yummy, reminded me of Pasta. I really really looking forward to the third episode (of course Best Love is in my pocket too, but can't miss this one). I squealed and squealed when he looked at her, such a sweet fairy tale like romance. It's a breath of fresh air where ,for once, the male lead is not geeky, funky or dorky (tho I love all those too ^^) but just a simple nice man.

Personally, I think it's a shame that this drama is airing against BL and CH, cuz this one would really really be a nice catch for JB to recap, that's how I felt during watching this drama. Nonetheless, thanks for all you are doing for us and please please take care. ^^

I was so excited to watch Lie to Me.

But even though the drama is cute, and the main pair has chemistry, I kind feel the plot is getting boring.

The plot is not very coherent and they do use whatever excuse (without much sense) to make the leads meet.

I enjoyed first episode, but second one? wasnt' that funny.

I don't want to say anything but I fear it turns out just like My pricess cute but boring and boring to the point the drama is not more watchable.

I already see much against with the''''' brothers love the same girls, and loved the same girl in the past too.''''

-

Best love is funny, keep getting funny but don't really have a ''story'' behind all... you know? What is the story about?
-

For me Romance town has a more solid plot. I like it. Is not a drama many will like but I'm enjoying it.

No need for caps hon ^^

I've watched up to 3 eps and I hated most of it. And I actually do LIKE Jang Nara. But I've seen many people saying they liked it more than Lie To Me, so it could just be me and my hate for Daniel Choi and his face and his way of acting his parts(I predict projectiles coming my way). I'm hating the premise behind Jang Nara's lie about her age and most of the characters so far doesn't appeal to me at all. Only bright spot for me in this drama is Ryu Jin but I see no chemistry there between him and Jang Nara.

Required fields are marked *

no, no projectiles. Though, in the drama, I feel differently.

While I dont like the way Choi has been acting his character, I understand that he's working with what he's been given...which, honestly, isnt much.

The first two episodes make me SOO conflicted about Jung Nara's character, I'm pulling my hair. Honestly, I feel pity for her character but the actions that they take MAKE NO SENSE!! argh!

Like, the selfish brat of a sister. And the fact that the accident WAS Jung Nara's fault and she keeps trying to put it on Choi? The fact that he HAS A POINT while she keeps trying to convince him (and us) that she doesnt have any part of it? Did she not realize what kind of crazy lady she sounded like when she told him to "give me the clothes." What person in their right mind would hand over someone else's stuff without a good explanation? LOL. :(

Meh. It looked cute but dropped the drama.
The characters dont make sense (though they can be likeable) and the plot has no point.

I dont want to be CONSCIOUS about the fact that I'm wasting time watching drama. I want to be free from that lol :D

I pretty much fast forwarded through most of the 3 episodes so I can't really remember most details... All i remember is that i want to punch the living lights out of most of the characters. The question was raised so it's safe to answer (warning spoiler ahead);

First ep was jaw-dropped hilariously funny, great camera angles. The character of the female lead was not what I'd expected, a baby-faced who carried the burden of the family and endured her sister from hell.

Second ep, the angst in her work place really annoyed me, and to my surprise, Jang Nara's acting was not as good, I'd hoped for a female protagonist with self- esteemed and fight her way for success, instead she portrayed a nice reluctant indecisive female. We all know that this drama is about her lies of her age to get a job, I just wanted that to get it done.

Third ep, still setting up about her job, boring ep.

BUT the fourth ep, was gold. the set up was done, fun work place, the chemistry between Choi and Jang started to show something diff and fresh. He thinks she is younger, she knows she is older but can't say. So their relationship was funny and cute. Next week, a little girl (played Hye Mi sis in DH) will come in, looking forward to that.

Seeing LTM, my money is still on BFB, there's still a fighting chance in term of writing. If this drama can bring more awesome things in fashion industry into the show, more aggressive female lead (no college degree, but gifted designer) fight to be a successful designer, it will draw a diff crowd to watch this show. But I don't think this one is fun to recap. ^^
Love Choi Daniel in here tho, dorky old-faced MD.

I've seen all four episodes of Baby-faced Beauty and I actually really like it. And I had no expectations at all going into the drama because I'm not particularly fond of any of the actors, but I think everyone is carrying the script quite well. Jang Nara and Daniel Choi has a lot of chemistry, it may not be romantic just yet since it's still early, but they are hilarious together and I find myself loving and enjoying their scenes together. I also really like Ryu Jin in this role, it's really suits him. No shower scenes and no taking off shirt lol, but I just find him (Ryu Jin) so hot in this role, just standing there stoicly, judging you lol, it's hilariously! And I realized the second lead girl is Cho-sun from SKKS! I really like her as Cho-sun so I was happy when I realized she was also in this drama (after I had already seen the episodes). She role as second lead hasn't really gone outside the box, but she's not the annoying type either, and I kinda like just seeing her in dramas. I guess her Cho-sun really left a good impression with me lol.

I thought the first 2 eps were boring, but it gets better and I will def watch it.....for now. I like Daniel Choi. Did not know he was this good. Must watch that Cyrano movie soon. Not really a fan of Jang Nara, but it is OK. I don't get that much annoyed with her by ep 4. Wished she would stop wearing high heels. Feel sorry for her feet and does not look good ....to me.

I like it that the characters start to like each other slowly. More believable than like Do Ko Jin in Best Love. Though CSW is so damn sexy that I will let it pass^^

Best Love has surprised me, didn't expect for this series to be good. The trailers didn't look anything special but the series so far has been pretty damn great. Love it!

Lie to me so far I've had the opposite reaction. The trailers looked great but the series itself hasn't been as good I was hoping for. It's not bad but it's not great either, especially compared to Best Love, which does everything Lie to me does but much better.

Going to miss 49 days after next week. Even with papers and presentations galore, 49 days was so good, I watched and cried over it. I remember being so worried that it would suck halfway through, but it got even better!

Best Love - going strong, but I sort of wonder how they'll fill the series.

Lie to Me - on the fence. YEH and KJH are a pleasure to watch, but a good script is just so crucial. My Fair Lady had a wonderful cast (YEH, Yoon Sang Hyun, Jung Il Woo, Moon Chae Woon) but a horrible script.

Sad that I have to agree about Lie to Me. I LOVE Kang Ji Hwan and have high expectation for LTM. So far it's just so so. Not bad but not as good as I want it to be.

But hey, I also hate the 5 first episodes of City Hall and only total lack of drama dose that kept me watching. And I didn't find the first episode of 49 Days that interesting either. Only my love for Jo Hyun Jae and love at the first sight at the portrayal of sweet natured, kind hearted, not so bright but sunny Ji Hyun that made me stick to it. And look how great those two are.

May Lie to Me improves in the next episodes to come.

I'm loving this crazy month of awesome dramas! And is it just me or are the second leads amazing?! Not looking forward to the pain ahead as I root for the ill-fated second leads....and I never do!!! I'm usually good at backing the main couple but this time, I just can't get past the cuteness of Pil-joo in Best Love and Sang-hee in Lie to Me. Sigh...the drama kingdom may be finally learning how to handle the second leads well, and I don't know how happy I am about that as my heart has always been so well protected in the past...

Thanks a truckload (in advance) to jb and girlfriday for the weeks of sleepless nights you are sacrificing for the greater drama good :) You guys are doing an amazing job recapping all the dramas and I, for one, am lapping it all up! I'm definitely anticipating City Hunter, no lie. If only the first couple of episodes.

I love this drama-flood of rom-coms (my favorite genre) but sometimes, too much is just TOO MUCH.
City Hunter, if done right, will be a much needed break.

I have so much hope for it even though it's not like the original. I want them to make it there own *fists of determination*

That said, I'm glad that the first couple of episodes of each rom-com has helped me knock them off my list of TBWs.

In: 49 Days, Best Love, The Duo, Can You Hear My Heart, Believe in Love,

Out: Baby Faced Beauty, Lie to Me, Manny,

Maybe: Romance Town, Ripley, City Hunter, Sweet Palpitations

Romance Town has potential. From the way one of the wives looked at her husband, this may have the flavor of "Desperate Housewives". At least, on the issues of murder and secret trysts.

But, my current favorite has got to be Best Love. It is so fantastically good in acting, directing, script, etc. Not disparage anyone or any drama, it is such a nice change to watch solid acting.

The Hong sisters and their nuances are so wickedly funny. And, the one word that Best Love centers around? P-u-l-s-e. Both guys, in the triangle, are concerned about pulse. However, one guy is concerned about other people's pulse and the other guy is concerned about his own pulse.

I have, yet, to encounter any unintelligible recap. I don't think that is possible for anyone writing for Dramabeans. As always, thanks for the recaps.

AuntieMame, I love your witty comments! Oh yes, it's all about pulse and although the story kine of Best Love is somehow cheesy, somehow the superb acting from all the three main leads (Dokko Jin, AJ and PJ) makes me want to suspend my disbelief since they are so immersed in their characters!

The first two episodes weren't up to par, but episode 3 and episode 4 were just too good to be true! I am pleasantly surprised that there are sparks between all the characters, especially between GHJ and YKS. Darn...they should collaborate in another project!

Thanks for the summary.

Oh dear...looks like I have to sacrifice some sleep for Romance Town-I've been hearing good things about it not only from DB.

4 dramas-Lie to me,Best Love,RT and CYHMH.However out out all these I only like the Cha Dong Joo and Pli Joo.

So whew....no need for agony.I'll just enjoy all the 4 different drama styles.Only Lie to me is the typical rom-com.The other 3...are not...yay :-)

hey hey! romance town is really not bad!!! strongly recommend! at first i watch the first ep starting like typical poor girl and okok storyline, but be after that the story turned interesting and funny, ad the "hook" of the drama starts from ep2, there are many "sik-mu" (which is mean maid of oldtime i guess) included min hyo rin, have different story and backgraound might also slowly revealed in the drama, I got a feeling the story will be better and better! :D

my goodness, looking at the first picture truly breaks my heart. 49 days is going to end and i'm really going to miss it. That picture above, I love. They look so good together. I wonder how much I'll be seeing them together in this last 2 epis. As much as I am excited to see how JH and HK will go, I still picture JH as LYW. But on more positive side, I can't wait to see what will happen to YK and YS. Hope for their happy ending.

49 days is by far my favorite, Best Love is great but I am not that interested in Romance town. And in the weekends I am watching Can you hear my heart, I know it is not mentioned in the article but I have to say I am surprised at myself for watching it because the female lead cries a lot and she is too agitated for my taste and the male lead is such a flower boy.

Gahh, I hate the 49 Days picture up there. It kills me that my YiKyung and HanKang pairing will not be. I hate it. TT.TT

It's a good sign that all the rating numbers are almost equal. This means that all the series are good, and that's good news for viewers. Also, ratings do not reflect true viewership. Wifi is free in Korea, and everybody can watch these shows are their leisure. I was walking around in Seoul, and everybody was watching all the shows on their smartphones. Kinda small, but still watchable when you are riding the subway.

the higher ratings already helped BL get subbed quicker

good sign

and it totally deserves the attention

it likely wont reach TAKGU-esque heights
but hopefully ratings continue to climb steadily
