Lee Dong-wook in Scent of a Woman

We’re a few weeks out from the new I’m-dying-but-this-will-be-funny-I-swear drama Scent of a Woman (I may have paraphrased the show’s description a little), which stars Kim Sun-ah as an ordinary office employee who discovers she’s got a limited time left to live, and decides to make the most of it.

The stills in this post of are her love interest, newly-released-from-army-duty Lee Dong-wook; he plays a chaebol engaged to another woman (Seo Hyo-rim), albeit in one of those arranged setups so common in the upper echelons. The better to keep the rich getting richer, I suppose. Can’t have that income gap shrinking when they’ve worked so hard to build it up, eh?

The family money for Lee’s character comes from the travel industry; he’s the only son to the owner of the top tourism company in the nation. He’s described as cynical, so I presume we can expect Kim Sun-ah to melt his cool exterior, much as she does that of her doctor (Eom Ki-joon), who becomes a warm Daddy Long Legs type to her.

I’m still curious to see how this is going to be funny; I get that it’s going for a Last Holiday premise and intends to keep the tone bright and entertaining. It’s just…is she really gonna die at the end? Because that sort of negates the whole comedy aspect of it for me. It comes from the writer-director pair behind Dr. Champ, though, so perhaps it’ll go for the same kind of refreshing, atmospheric vibe as that drama. And if they bring back that gorgeous camera, I’m already half-swooning in anticipation.

Scent of a Woman premieres on July 23.

I have to admit, I saw pieces of My Girl here and there and just didn't feel it. Although I did like the movie he was in with Eugene - Eugene caught my eye more than him. Hopefully I'll finally see his appeal here. If not, maybe my taste just lies elsewhere.

Because the ladies love the chaebol playboy-turned devoted lover hero, lol. That plot line of the ssagaji bastardly chaebol heir converted into an ardent lover by episode 16(more or less) is one that will never die out.

I still don't get how this is gonna be funny either...
Unless the girl pulls a Gui Gui (Brown Sugar Macchiato) and can't read English, so she thought she had testicular cancer but ends up finding out she can't...cause she lacks some vital organs necessary for testicular cancer... But otherwise, I don't get how this will be funny...

I share your bewilderment...how can a dying theme be funny? I remember that award-winning movie "Life is Beautiful" about the Holocaust and it was supposed to be funny. I watched it, and did laugh, but the laughter was tinged with sadness and dread.

oh god Life is Beautiful...

That drama was the horror of my youth, showing me that life is just a screening of sadness with fake happiness... or, at least, that's how my 6th grade teacher described it lol.

I cant look of LDW without seeing Kim Min-Jong in his face; it's weird. :D

BSM WAS really weird lol. Part of an old era, perhaps still existing era (?), where silly crack dramas still became famous :P

I really hope they can pull off the funny. If it's awkward black humor or something to that effect, I'm not sure how I'd feel, considering the premise. Then again, slapstick would be awkward too. Hmm... We'll have have to see.

Regardless, I'm just happy Lee Dong-wook is jumping into a new project so quickly after being discharged. I'm neutral about Kim Sun-ah. Maybe she'll win me over in this one?

I'll be along for the ride, as long as things don't get *too* heartbreak-y or sappy or strange.

Oh... and relevance is necessary, I guess, lol. I like the pictures! :) Lee Dong-wook is looking mighty fine all suited up. It's been a while, so 2011 fashion trends look yummy on him. Or... he looks yummy in 2011 fashion trends? Works either way, haha.

One of my favourite actors and one of my favourite actresses... it will be interesting to see if they have on-screen sizzling chemistry to rival Hwanhye's (methinks no other couple can do that though) :)

CAN NOT WAIT! Love Wookie and I've been anticipating his comeback for so long! His facial features are gorgeous and love his profile!

And it's a plus that his new drama is with Kim Sun-Ah...love her too, especially as Sam-Soon.

I just hope it stays somewhat light-hearted...if at all possible...

This year's dramas seem to be heading towards the tragic: 49 Days, Ripley, Princess's Man, and now this. Between serious dramas and rom-coms, I prefer rom-coms, escapism and all that, but come to think of it, it's the sad ones that haunt you a long time after you've finished watching them. Think What Happened in Bali, Stairway to Hell, I'm Sorry I love You.

This better end just like "Last Holiday" and that means a happy ending with nobody dying!

And with all the dramas I've watched where the male character is the son of a rich chaebol. . .I wonder if real-life rich people in Korea watch Korean dramas and laugh at the exaggeration or just nod in agreement that this is their life? Haha, I don't know it always struck me as interesting that rich folk are always part of the equation but we all know it's pretend.

But I can't wait for this drama. Kim Sun Ah~! <3

Unless it involves some type of bizarre plot twist (i.e., mixed up medical records, misdiagnosis, miraculous healing, etc.), it's going to be tough to find the funny in terminal illness.

We've dealt with death dramas in "Who Are You" and "49 Days" - both ending with copious tears on my part. Kdrama writers have no compulsion in killing off characters, living, dying, or a combo of both (49 Days).
I mean, look how we're living in current fear of any upcoming deaths in City Hunter? The stronger the writing, the less fan-service to appease us.

So, it's going to be interesting to see how the writer(s) handle this subject without alienating the viewers. It's tough to emotionally invest in a character who's slated to bite "the Big One". (Hello, Stairway To Heaven - Imma talkin' to you!!)

Perhaps Kim Sun Ah made a mistake in thinking that she is dying. Some hospital mix up. So she lives her life to the fullest without thinking of consequences. This is the only way the rom com can go with the death theme?

Hey javabeans, have you seen any of the drama Thank You? That also has a rather depressing premise as it centers around the family of a little girl with AIDS. It managed to be quite funny without being at all inappropriate. I'm thinking Scent of a Woman might have a similar vibe - teary and thoughtful, but somehow full of joy and laughter.
