Lee Jung-jae and Kim Hyun-joong to headline Speed?

Upcoming car racing drama Speed (I know, I know. I’m not in charge of the titles.) has lined up quite the interesting double-male-lead lineup, having secured Lee Jung-jae who’s been attached to the project for some time, and is now awaiting final decision from singer-actor Kim Hyun-joong (Playful Kiss), who is reportedly considering the role for his big comeback drama. That is one odd pair of male leads. I’m looking for a commonality… I’m looking… Maybe they both like cars? Yeah, I got nuthin’.
Speed is the new mega-blockbuster action drama from the director of IRIS, PD Yang Yoon-ho, and is set to air on cable upstart TV Joseon in the spring. It’s about two car racers who go head to head in a fierce rivalry, and their relationship also involves a star-crossed fate. Like with each other? Because I’ll tell ya, if you’re trying to convince me they got switched at birth, I’m probably going to need a pair of goggles.
Considering the female lead role is popstar Sooyoung, of Girls’ Generation, below. Speed is gearing up for a premiere in March, but given that it’s stunt- and action-heavy, the production will need all the lead time it can get. Let’s hope it’s at least a fun, adrenaline-fueled popcorn-flick kind of ride. If anyone so much as hints at the I-drive-to-fill-the-emptiness-inside-because-I-killed-my-father-in-a-car-accident storyline, Imma sucker punch somebody.
Speed airs March-April on cable network TV Joseon.

I LOVE LEE JUNG JAE and sorry for KHJ's fans but I really question why him with Lee Jung Jae. I hope KHJ will prove me wrong and he can finally act coz I don't think Lee Jung Jae can carry this on his own if his co-stars aren't up to par with him.

In order for a drama to work, one important factor is the chemistry between the cast.
In that sense, I do think that if Kim Hyun Joong + Lee Jung Jae + Sooyoung's casting comes true, it'll be worth checking out just to see how the dynamics roll.
So I say, give KHJ a break and let him give it his all first. It actually gave me a headache reading so many hateful comments. I thought entertainment was supposed to be fun? (Now, now, don't be admitting that you actually enjoy bashing the poor guy. That just makes you mean.)
Aaron Kwok comes to mind. He was labelled as a pretty face (with a bad haircut), but now he's a Golden Horse award best actor recipient twice over. Took him years, but yeah, he made good.
Now, no one's saying to let KHJ train on the job. I say, let the boy continue his acting lessons. (Yes, I read that he has been going for those). But don't write him off the face of the (acting) world as well.
When I read some of the comments, it just made me wonder: what kind of message is this sending to our children? That there's no point in ever trying or improving, because you'll never measure up to people's standards or criticisms anyway?
Ratings have more to do with one actor's performance, but also with plot, pace etc amongst others.
For KHJ's sake, I hope that the next drama he ultimately chooses allows him to showcase what he has learnt in a good environment of great script, great cast chemistry and great production (amongst others).

What? KHJ??? I can't believe how people think he's a good actor. He's stiffed as a tree.
LJJ is agreat actor and to be pairing him with that idol KHJ... Don't get me started about another SNSD member trying to break into acting.
Maybe I'm being a bit harsh but based on the two dramas KHJ has starred in.. he has showed a slight improvement but nothing spectacular.
And I don't really get this fascination about idols acting. Idols just need to be singing, dancing and looking pretty for their fans.

I guess you guys have no clue of KHJ's popularity! If u need larger audience to watch ur drama, u need a crowd pulling actor, and KHJ fits just right! Its not only about acting, am sure you guys know how the entertainment world works.

I agree he's popular but it doesn't make him the right fit. he's stiff like a board when it comes to acting and crowd pulling? playful kiss barely pulled any ratings in korea, it was dwindling in very very low single digits for most its run. I like him, but he's just not cut out for acting.

In Korea it had the low ratings .. but everywhere it was shown it was a hit and that includes Youtube. Whoever was beating them in the ratings when PK was running ... ahhhhh where are they? Was that drama a hit in every country that was air and youtube???
I think that the people that do Dramas ( not so much the actors but the behind the scenes folks) hire idols because they might not do the ratings they want in Korea but outside Korea they are HOT and in demand!! Sometimes and most times when a drama is done at the home front it is usually done for the outsiders that can't get enough of their idol ( if he/she can act ) and WE will download,buy and save every single picture,video and blurry image of them.

Online/youtube viewing doesn't realy bring any $$ to the production.
Yes, producers hire idol stars to pull in the younger viewers (including those overseas), but if the writing/acting stinks, history has shown that the show usually flops (btw, overseas rights don't bring in nearly as much $$ as a show being a hit domestically).
As for Sooyoung, I don't know if she can act, but she has a lively personality so maybe some of that can rub off on screen.

Well then I'd rather care more about producers caring less about foreigners and go low to whoever can bring more ratings in foreign countries and actually pick decent actors to heighten the drama quality.

Agree, read the comments on Netflix when they pulled Playful Kiss. A lot of mad subscribers!. As far as his acting, on the fence. In PK, he was supposed to stiff. BOF, can't remember now that I have seen better.

Lots of great actors have done dramas with low ratings. Let's not put ratings on the shoulders of one actor. That's just not fair. KHJ improved a smidgeon from BOF to Playful Kiss. i think in about 5-10 years, he may end up not being cringeworthy. I hope acting with an older, more experienced actor may help. Being in two idol dramas can't really do much to improve one's range.

totally agree with EVERYBODY here - LJJ is a major actor i cannot believe the PD of this drama want to bring in pretty boy and girl just to enhance to popularity of their productions - no intigrety for their arts , sadly to say that I do lik Hyunjoong and Sooyoung . But i love K-dramas for the stories and their plots .

True, it's my opinion, but I have an innate ability in discerning physical flaws.
And so what if "fans" think he's good-looking?
There are plenty of fans who think Lee Seung-gi and Rain are good-looking but they really aren't (granted, KHJ is better-looking than those 2, but he's FAR from the best-looking Korean male celeb).

(shakes head) I am growing (a BIT LITTLE) to like him after I enjoyed watching that drama "Playful Kiss". KHJ really is pretty bad. Beautiful to look at, but incredibly dull.
I was introduced to him through acting. Found out he was a singer, but was so turned off by his acting that I didn't bother to look him up. It was only recently that I watched one of his music videos and had to Google his name three times just to make sure there wasn't some charismatic guy out there that shared his name. It really is like night and day. He should stick to what he does best.

You know, CHANGE IS THE ONLY CONSTANT THING IN THIS WORLD. Yes, I'd agree that his acting in BOF and PK didn't have that much impact to the public but he is improving. I know KHJ, he will do his best to give nothing but the best to his fans. He is working so hard to meet everyone's expectations. So please, why don't you give him a chance? His role in this new drama wouldn't be the same with his roles in his past dramas so I am sure he'll show the audience the other side of his acting. He's up to show the audience something new. Who knows he might turn out to be good in portraying his role in this drama. So let's not judge first, okay? Let's wait for the drama to air.

I don't like his songs, but he really is charismatic on stage! (I feel like Uee is the opposite. Wooden on stage, but charismatic on tv/cfs. It's really strange- because I feel like the stage element of entertainment does involve some acting...these kids just need to apply what they know to the thing they suck at)

Kim Hyun Joong is very bad.. I can't even call him mediocre.
However, Soo Young on the other hand? I think you need to be less harsh. She's probably the best actress in SNSD and I'm waiting to be pleasantly surprised. I've seen her act before, and she has potential.

I love Kim Hyun Joong. I don't give a damn if he can't act his way out of a paper bag. Its EYE CANDY I'm looking for.
Personally I liked him in BOF ... Playful Kiss was ok, but I've still sat thru it twice cuz I like him lol. I just want to be entertained. Whether that's done by me drooling over the lead or the fact they can act, I don't care. I'm hoping for a shower scene hahahahahahahaha

Me too! Love KHJ, yellow hair and all! I think he's gotten better with PK, and I loved that show and watched all the Youtube special editions....happiest time of my life! So happy he's coming back. I think he works so hard, and I love his witty and funny real life persona. I hope they'll have lots of romantic scenes, like in the PK youtube editions. I know I sound like a giddy fangirl, but heck, who cares!

It's concerning to see how those stars are so obsessed with physical beauty but with us to deal with.....

Wishing very hard that he would improve with more airtime. He's better in PK. A big chance he would be even better in this one.

Maybe it'd be a Korean take on Speed, and they'll shave off his hair and give him a Keanu cut. Here's another possibility: To pay tribute to the amazing LJJ in 'The Housemaid', I suggest a revival of the housemaid plot here. LJJ can be the new housemaid who comes between our beautiful golden couple, KHJ and Soo Young. Alluring in his housemaid's apron, abs straining against the soiled fabric, LJJ scrubs toilet bowls and greasy sinks with a grace unseen in KHJ's previous housemaids. 'Speed' actually refers to the speed at which Housemaid LJJ performs his housemaidey tasks - which is very, very slow indeed, as he spends most of his time drifting seductively from room to room whilst casting enigmatic looks and coy smiles at the smitten KHJ....

And it's not like there aren't actors (who are solely) actors who "hotness" as well.
In fact, the best-looking males in the Korean entertainment industry are actors - aside from a few, most male idols aren't really good-looking (Cho Si-won is one of the few exceptions).

You guys, why don't you give him a chance? Producers believe in him that's why they offered him this drama. PRODUCERS!!! They know what's bad and good acting. They know what's good and bad for their drama. And here you are criticizing. Who are you to criticize? Do you have any experience in working in a drama? Did you take up any acting, directing, cinematography and etc. lessons? Now if KHJ is a bad actor he wouldn't be offered with dramas. Did you drop your IQ??? I know he's not the best actor. Please, some producers are idiots who can't recognize a bad script or awful acting (hence a lot of crappy dramas) and many of the ones who can recognize bad acting will sell their artistic integrity in the search for higher ratings among the younger pop.

I loveeeeee KHJ. But honestly, he's really bad when it comes to acting. I couldn't bring myself to watch BOF or PK twice because of this. Really stiff and unnatural.

I don't hate Kim Hyun Joong and he may or may not have improved since BOF / PK... but who are we kidding here??...He's going to get eaten up alive by Lee Jung Jae....but if what Sate Ayam said is true and YAI is in contention...damn...now I would LOVE to see that happen...can you imagine an angsty bromance/rivalry with between those two?....I can!!!!!.... and it's goin to be delicious!!!!

i like KHJ but sorry to say this he can't act...let's see if his acting improves in this drama but as of now i can say he was so stiff in acting...
about Sooyoung, can't judge since i haven't seen her past acting jobs...not a fan of SNSD but let's see :)
and LJJ!!! OMG...i'm willing to watch this because of him! ^^

i'm an enormous fan of KHJ and i'm very much looking forward to him acting in this drama. one thing about him is he's constantly striving and has a 'never say die' attitude towards all his talents. with every project he improves and it's always a noticeble improvement. great acting will not come to him over night, but i'm positive that one day it will. plus he's hot! that already makes the drama worth watching!

Well, I love this kind of action-filled drama, so I hope this won't let me down. LJJ is a good actor, KHJ is one mega hot star (If people have yet to watch his 'acting'-without saying a single word in their SS501 solo mini drama, go watch it. He looks good while driving the car. Tbh, I think he's more suitable for action-filled drama than being a pretty boy.

I'm happy to see KHJ finally taking on a role that he's wanted to do for a long time - he'd rather be the bad boy - throw racing cars in there and this could be his dream role.
It's great that an actor like LJJ will be onboard for this drama. Not only will he be able to lend gravitas to the production, but these young kids will learn from him. I know KHJ will - the kid's like a sponge and wants to improve with every appearance. (His acting has steadily improved, but he's taken roles that are diametrically opposite of his real personality - most young, inexperienced actors find difficulty in this attempt.) He says it continually and it would be nice to have his detractors change their minds and give him a much deserved break.

I'm a fan of his acting (and his HOTness), but do you really think that given the choice between having the possibility of having KHJ in your drama and YAI, they'd go with YAI?!
I've got a bridge in Brooklyn I'd like to sell you if you believe that.
Dramas are made to produce revenue. The mere appearance of KHJ produces $$$.
YAI? Not so much. Is he a talented actor? Absolutely.
Will it get him cast for "Speed"? Nope.

How can I underestimate Yoo Ah In and his charm, Jomo! Wandeugi has garnered more than 5.1 million viewers, the #3 Most Watched Movie 2011 in Korea, and is still climbing. It beat Won Bin's Ahjussi as the #1 Box Office Movie for 4 consecutive weeks! Let's pray he'll hit another daily drama soon :D

What I can't understand is how it could have 5.1 million viewers and has only pulled in 1.1 million $ in revenue.

in comparing how the last KHJ drama with the last YAI drama and movie (I'm not calling for a fight between either() but Playfull Kiss was actually one of the lowest rated dramas (domestically) of 2010 whereas Sunkyunkwan Scandal did much better in that respect and YAI's current movie, Wandeukyi has been at the top of the box office for like 4 weeks or something...but Kim Hyun Joong seems to have more weight if the drama wants to attract international fans due to BOF's popularity..so yeah like Jomo said, you definitely cannot underestimate Yoo Ah In here

I am thinking on an international basis - and isn't that the dream of every PD out there? To hit the "Big Time" with a Korean drama that can go International (equals $$$)?
Playful Kiss is a prime example - low ratings in Korea and #1 on the international scene, and it's still going strong a year later.
I love Yoo In Ah, don't get me wrong - but I feel like comparing him to KHJ's fame is like apples to oranges. KHJ is on a totally different level. He's at the place in his career where he choses the next project from what is offered to him. Speed was offered and he's decided to take it - his company has already halted his World Tour schedule to accomodate shooting the drama.

Sure every PD wants his drama to go international. But what comes first to every PD's mind, is of course, how to pull the national/local ratings off. One of the factors is by hiring either good or commercial actors or even better, good AND commercial actors. There might be more than 2 choices in their mind about the casts.
Now, I figure out it's all coming back to the actors themselves, whether or not they're willing to accept the offer. So I think it's unnecessary to say who's better pull this drama off in international scene and who's not.

Robot Boy Idol next to acting heavyweight Lee Jung-jae? I love them both, but... Enjoyed Playful Kiss more than I should have, but not sure how this will play out though... Maybe the underdog will rise to the occasion and it will be his break-out role.

@ RW, yeah i did watch SS501 mini drama.. agree with you, i do also think KHJ's more suitable with this kind action role.. pretty face with baddas attitude BUT if YOO AH IN's name got mention.. i will for sure rooting for YAI ;-)

Woah Lee Jung-jae and Kim Hyun-joong... odd pair indeed. Yeah, I heard about Yoo Ah-in being a strong candidate for the lead role too. No offense to KHJ, but I'm rooting for LJJ and YAI more!
As for Sooyoung, she's hands down the best "actress" among SNSD members to me. I've always wanted to see her in bigger role, but honestly I'm not sure if this is the right project for her first leading role. :/

The only decent idol turned actor I've seen so far is that Yoochun guy. Dude knows how to use his facial expressions for ffsakes.

Sooyoung had supporting roles in the rom-com movie Hello, Schoolgirl! (Yoo Jitae, Lee Yeonhee) and the sitcom Unstoppable Marriage. I personally think she did well in these roles, so I'm rooting for her in this one.

Not really known as an "idol", but Han Groo in Girl/Killer K was excellent.
Eun-Jung of the girl-group T-ARA has done a pretty good in her roles, but she started off as an actress.
And YEH, despite her sub-par acting in most of her roles, really did a good job in "Coffee Prince" thanks to an excellent script and PD.

Of course he looks different.
He's older, for one thing, plus he's put on much more muscle mass.
He also changes his look for each new level in his career.
Hair, clothes - he was the tough, bad boy for "Breakdown" and now with "Lucky" he wanted a slick Ocean's 11 look and feel - sleazy Las Vegas. Crazy-colored hair and loud clothes along with a Big Band sound.
Some people may not like it, but it's a deliberate move on his part - and it succeeded.

Yeah, I get he's older. I get that he changes his look for new levels in his career. People change all of the time.
My point was that he does not look like that picture above, that's all. I thought I read somewhere (probably here) that he had an accident and needed reconstructive surgery.
I don't think his new look is bad, I just think he looks so very different facially than our Ji hoo.
Kind of like when Mark Hamil got in an accident between two of the Star Wars movies. He looked a lot different. He was still Luke Skywalker, but different.
That being said, I kinda dig the video... it's fun.

I think it's the nose that makes him look different. He had this thin delicate nose before, it really was one of the reasons he looked so good....this new nose, more manly, true, but I miss his old nose.

Not sure if I'll be tuning into this drama since I'm not a big fan of action drama's. Although it kind of sounds like a drama version of "The Fast & the Furious", and I did enjoy the first 2 films of the franchise with Paul Walker.

Someone's got it wrong fropm the marketing point of view. If you've got two popular idols onboard, you dont make an action drama, because their fans aren't into it. I may be totally wrong but KHJ fans (mostly teenage girls, perhaps some ajummas) would rather opt for a romcom or a teary melodrama. Actually the fans will watch him anywhere (commercials?), but why not give them something pleasant and make them watch cars?
Or is my way of thinking a single prejudice ?;)

I think this will work if it's just a fast fun action series and they don't require much in the way of heavy lifting from KHJ. He can be charming at least. Given the ratings for Playful Kiss, I don't think another rom-com is the way to go with him. He needs something different.
Personally, I hope they steal the storyline of Speed Racer and the two guys end up as brothers, and Sooyoung is Trixie.

Excited for Sooyoung. She has great comedic timing and I at least know she'll probably be better than Yoona lol. She was in "Hello Schoolgirl" with Lee Yeonhee, and did ok, tho her role was pretty small. If this drama involves crying idk what she'd be like tho.
Isn't Yoo Ah-In attached to this? I'd rather see him opposite Sooyoung. They'd look really good together heh.

Should be interesting if nothing else, hopefully interesting in a positive way and not interesting in a crash-and-burn-I-want-to-look-away-but-I-can't way. To be honest I'm a KHJ fan, but not because of his acting. Mostly because of his face. I personally think with the right role he could step it up and pleasantly surprise us all, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
As for Sooyoung,she was in Hello, Schoolgirl but it was a bit part and didn't really require much acting, so I have no idea if she has any talent.
Basically, I like cars, I want someone to step it up with the action dramas, and even if KHJ has another fail at least he makes for some pleasant screen-candy. I'm cautiously optimistic. Very cautiously.

why is Hyun Joong acting again? no offense to anybody, but it's just a pain watching him act. i've never fallen in love with his character in a drama before. his dull acting just makes it so hard to fall in love with him. i agree he'll make the drama popular, but it won't do much for his career.

People here are very harsh with their comments. Just think about the role that each actor has to play. That is not their real life. If they are playing a dull role, then dith on the writer. Also each drama has different characters that work to create a whole. Not all the characters are going to act the same. In real life we have many kind of people and races with different roles and all of us make this a nice colorfull world.

This is true. To be honest the characters KHJ played in dramas so far--like his role in BoF and Playful Kiss...both those dudes were SUPER DULL characters--not just because he played them. I mean...a loner and anti-social genius? Yeah okay...
BUT maybe LJJ will rub off on him. You can't be around such a great actor and not get something from it. Maybe behind the scenes LJJ will be dropping him some pointers! Hopefully.

I'm hopping LJJ will run off on him too. Just like when Park Yoo Chun began in Sungkyunkwan Scandal - his best work was opposite Kim Gab Soo. If KHJ doesn't improve after costarring with LJJ, then I will be more inclined to lose hope for this poor guy.

Both his Playful Kiss and BoF characters have been played by other people before and they were neither dull or boring. And "loner" and "anti-social genius" are such a trope in dramas these days and are such thankful roles.

That BOF is like a character blackhole. Hated him in the Taiwanese and Japanese version, and Jihoo was no exception. I do think it's the character.
And personally, I think SeungJo was closer to Naoki than ISWAK's Zhi Shu. Yeah, Joe Cheng is a better actor, but Zhi Shu didn't really...act like Naoki.
