Yeon Woo-jin joins Arang and the Magistrate

After a bit of a hiatus once the leads were cast, summer ghosty romance drama Arang and the Magistrate is back on the casting bandwagon. They’ve landed their villain: Yeon Woo-jin, who is best known for being the youngest son on the hit weekend drama Ojakkyo Brothers. He’ll be joining Shin Mina and Lee Jun-ki to dish out some summer spooks.

Arang and the Magistrate is a fantasy romance sageuk, based on the famous myth about the young daughter of a magistrate who was brutally murdered and wrongfully accused of dishonoring her father. Shin Mina plays the ghost, Arang, who continued to haunt every new magistrate who came to the town, until one (our hero, played by Lee Jun-ki) finally listened to her tale and promised to avenge her death. Yeon will play Joo-wal, a high-ranking official who schemes and plots to serve his ambition, as villains are wont to do.

It’s apparently Yeon’s first sageuk and first villain role to date, since he’s still a pretty newish face. Of the four Ojakkyo brothers, he was certainly the greenest, and he did have a few moments where he couldn’t hold up his end of the emotional exchange. But he got better over the course of the 58-episode series, and then landed a short drama special a few weeks back called Ordinary Love, and though the drama was a bit strange (about two people whose family members are linked in a murder case who fall in love), he showed some interesting colors. I’m a little concerned he’s going to look like a widdle puppy when he’s supposed to be a scary villain in a ghost story, but perhaps a nice creepy sageuk beard will do the trick?

Arang and the Magistrate will premiere in July on MBC.

Ha, ha, ha!!! That was the 1st thought that came to my mind: "Maknae Oppa!"
I am glad to see that he will be in another drama soon.

Shin Mina! Lee Junki! This is something I absolutely cannot miss. Now I don't need any more reasons to make myself watch a segeuk.

It's nice that he's developing. After sitcom, family weekend series and drama special he must have been casted in something trendy...

"I’m a little concerned he’s going to look like a widdle puppy when he’s supposed to be a scary villain in a ghost story"

Heh. Maybe he'll just end up staring his way through it, both eyes and veins popping. This should be interesting. These summer spooks never really end well, so we'll just wait and see.

Well, if he has popping eyes and popping veins, it's all good; I mean this is going to be a horror drama right, so he probably would have lots of scary scenes requiring him to open his eyes real big or stare real long and that would call for poppy eyes and poppy veins, and he won't have to strain his acting chops if he has naturally poppy eyes and poppy veins.

Heh. Hahaha. Maybe he has a darker side in real life and this role might come to him more naturally than being a puppy.

Let's just hope he doesn't try to outdo Jeon Ta-esoo.

He was my favorite from the 4 Ojakgyo brothers. The maknae is actually 28 years old already :)
I will be happy to see him on my screen, even if he is the bad guy in a fusion sageuk. He needs to prove he can play something else than a cute puppy lover part.

Heh! Don't know how great he is at acting, but it's nice to know that Arang is still semi-active with its casting :) Can't wait till July... (Lee Jun-ki! Lee Jun-ki! Lee Jun-ki!)

Tae-pil (to Ja-eun): Don't forget what oppa said: until you get married, all men in this world are wolves...

Ja-eun: ...except for maknae oppa, right?

Tae-pil: Of course!

Dude, I loved maknae in Ojakgyo Brothers! I hope he can show his "evil" side well in this new show.

hahaha,, when the truth is he's actually the ladiesman in the beginning of the series. I love maknae oppa & ja-eun interaction.

I miss ojakgyo so much..
I'm not too excited with kim nam-joo drama, the actor who plays her husband looks alot like kim jong-min (of 1N2D). I keep picturing jong-min everytime I see him onscreen.

Thank you for posting, girlfriday! I was super frustrated about something when I sat down at the computer, and I really needed some good news. I was so glad to see that you had posted something because you and javabeans always make me laugh when I'm in a foul mood.

As for the news itself, I only watched a few episodes of Ojakgyo, so I don't really have an opinion about YWJ, but it is great to hear that Arang is adding more cast members. I'm ridiculously excited for this show, and I am willing to admit that it's mostly because I'm glad to have Lee Junki back from army duty and jumping into a project right away. Yes, I'm kinda shallow that way.

Thanks, Mystisith! Every encouraging word is appreciated, and as you said, at least things are looking up in Dramaland. Right now I've got the Shut Up OST cranked up and two episodes of Rooftop Prince ready to be watched, so I'll be feeling a little better soon. : )

Shut Up OST definitely helped - there's nothing quite like rockin' out with Sung Joon. : ) I just got back from Bible study and dinner with friends, which was what really helped lift my spirits. Now RP will just be icing on the cake.

Thanks for the encouragement!

Cheer up~ Yeah, I use Dramabeans as my daily dose of happiness. And Youtube, lol. And yes, I'm also extremely shallow that way. As soon as I heard Lee Jun-ki being casted into Arang, I gave up Faith and immediately started worshipping this drama. Months before it'll air, lol. :)

I'm the same way. I can't tell you how happy I was that he didn't re-sign with Faith after he was discharged (I've never heard that happening before, but I was still concerned). I want to see him in a drama, but that one just doesn't interest me. Arang, though - I'm all over this premise, and even though it's a saguek ghost story, I know Lee Junki and Shin Mina are going to be so cute together. Seriously, there is going to be so much pretty in this drama, I don't know how the world will handle it. I just hope they don't cover up his face with weird facial hair. That would be a crime. Okay, I'd better stop now before this comment gets *too* long, but suffice it to say that if this drama does even half of the things I want it to do, I'm going to be one happy camper. Is it July yet?

Really looking forward to this drama. Have been missing Lee Junki.

And maknae, how I hated this character in the beginning of Ojakgyo, but absolutely loved him towards the end. Him teasing poor green Tae Hee was absolutely hilarious!

I think he can pull off a sarcastic kind of look and attitude.. He's good with that in OB.. Kekeke.

Great to hear that he join the cast. I'll watch him anytime.

Wooo... I'm onboard!

Ojakgyo Brothers is one of my favourite. He has this bad boy image, but to be a villain... it take a lot of emotions... Maknae Oppa fighthing. I'm looking forward to it.

I love him. Unfortunately, I wasn't too fond of who he was paired with in Ojakgyo. It had nothing to do with the character, but I just didn't feel the chemistry between the actors.

Also, Yeon Woo Jin starred in a short film called "Just Friends" which is immensely underrated. Probably because of the central theme of the short, however his acting was superb and believable. I've loved him ever since. :D

everytime I see him, my heart will scream "MAKNAE", hahaha, how OB really have effects on me! :)

I like his character the most in OB, especially when he was teasing Tae Hee and Jaeun, the 'ka-yoe', the swollen lips, haha, he's sooo cute!

And after OB ends, I always hope this maknae will appear in other drama, and when Ordinary Love aired in my country, I watched it despite the storyline doesn't suit my taste, just because of him :)

I WILL BE LOOOOOOOKING FORWARD TO THIS DRAMA !!!

I hope that Yeon Woon Jin will DO his BEST with his first-time 'villian' role in this drama with Shin Min and my top favorite actor Lee Jun Ki ~ ~ <3 <3 <3

FIGHTINGGGG !!! \\^o^//

I first saw him in Ojakgyo Brothers. I liked him from the beginning - he had a scene in a bathroom where his character, Tae Pil, said he was so good looking it was scary! Ha ha ha ... oh maknae baby!

His character had a snarky attitude and was fun when he was trying to snag older ladies and getting caught out always.

I would have liked a triangle with his character, Tae Heun and Ja Eun - that would have been interesting and upped the conflict between Tae Pil and Tae Heun. Too bad it didn't happen.

I hope he can show off more of his acting chops in this new drama.
