Time-slip drama Mi-rae’s Choice confirms leads
by | August 26, 2013 | 148 Comments

Upcoming KBS time-slip drama Mi-rae’s Choice (or Future Choice, since the heroine’s name means “future,” of course) has finally secured its cast. Yoon Eun-hye (I Miss You) has signed on to play the time-traveling heroine, Lee Dong-gun (Smile Again, Lovers in Paris) will be making his army comeback in his first drama in five years, and Jung Yong-hwa (You’ve Fallen For Me) gives him a run for his money as the other leg of the love triangle.

The new fall Monday-Tuesday drama comes from writer Hong Jin-ah of The King 2 Hearts and Beethoven Virus, and the PD of Crime Squad and Bad Love. It’ll be set in the world of television broadcasting, and stars Yoon Eun-hye as a writer (named Na Mi-rae) who travels back in time to meet her past self on purpose to set about on a different course in life. Where’s the Bad Idea Fairy when you need her?

Rift in space-time continuum notwithstanding, I do like the idea of Yoon Eun-hye playing two totally different versions of a character, which will be as much fun as you can have without being in a makjang where you play your own evil twin. The character is described as a bright and lovable type who spends her days chanting to herself, “I’m okay!” She works as a desk drone at a large company’s call center and just kind of scrapes by in life. But one day her future self appears in front of her and starts her down a path to pursue the things she really wanted in life. It’s painted as an uplifting success story, so I’m thinking there will be minimum supernatural mythology — just enough to get the gimmick going.

This will be Lee Dong-gun’s first drama since 2008’s When Night Comes, and he’ll be playing the broadcaster’s lead announcer, a man who can be prickly, but is also a highly principled and upright. Jung Yong-hwa plays a VJ who went to film school in the States. But he’s also got a double life, because he’s actually the grandson of the broadcast network’s CEO, and is basically pulling an undercover boss move by playing a lowly cameraman when he’s set to inherit the entire station. He’s described as a smooth operator who dreams of building a media conglomerate that does everything from film to TV.

On paper the setup sounds an awful lot like Nine, but I think we can expect a more heroine-centric success story that happens to use time travel, rather than a story that hinges on it. The writer is one in the plus column for me, and well, any day that Yoon Eun-hye signs up for a drama that doesn’t make me want to spork my eyes out is a good day indeed.

Mi-rae’s Choice follows Good Doctor and airs in October on KBS.

The writer is definitely a plus. I have a love/loathe relationship with Yoon Eun-hye’s drama choices. I love her but I have to see the October line-up to see if this drama is a must-watch for me though.

    • 1.1 pabo ceo reom

Same here. She’s had some huge head scratchers. She used to be one of those actresses for me that I would check out a drama just for her, but not so much any more. Regardless, I always wish her the best in her projects.

      • 1.1.1 KimYoonmi

I heard that Yoon Eun Hye chose her recent dramas out of obligations (Minus I Miss You) to the directors. I give her mercy for being nice. I don’t give her mercy for not recognizing when the bail for your own career and safety.

Given she’s paid all her debts, I’m going to risk her choice this time, though I’m still secretly disappointed at her choice of a non-SBS series. (Running Man) and that her lead isn’t Lee MinKi.

        I can dream, can’t I?

  2. asianromance

Glad to see Lee Dong-gun back and Yoon Eun-Hye in a promising drama.

And why are these leading men always prickly? We need a happy-go-lucky, compulsive hugger!

    • 2.1 mommai

      More Enriques, please! πŸ™‚

      • 2.1.1 Hyun Ae

yeah .. i miss kkae geum. i hope they can make special episode of FBND

        • kumi

          I really miss him too!

      • 2.1.2 Jo

Aww, now I’m hearing someone calling “Ahjumma!” and I’m like….”yes?”

  3. Stace

Love Yoon Eun Hye! Definitely keeping an eye on this.

  4. old soul

Story aside, I like the pairing of Lee Dong-gun and Yoon Eun-hye. I keep hoping for a really good drama for YEH. She hasn’t had one since Coffee Prince. Much like Moon Geun Young, both their talent is wasted because the dramas they pick are not that good. So I’m keeping my fingers crossed for this one.

    • 4.1 tortyserox

totally agree! MGY stopped at Cinderella Sister. while YEH, hmmm….Goong?

nevertheless i hope this drama will be a success!

      • 4.1.1 Celest

LOL. I’m gonna have to interject Coffee Prince for YEH, the last of hers I actually completed.

        • Sophia

I feel the same way, only I’ve started about 5 of her dramas, but have never finished even one. Coffee Prince ep 10 is about the most I’ve gone.

          • bd

You missed out, gets way better after ep. 10.

      • 4.1.2 bd

“Goong” really wasnt that good (acting or writing-wise).

Only real good drama YEH has done is “Coffee Prince” and not surprisingly, that was the one where she gave her best performance.

As for MGY, she seems to have had better luck w/ her film projects.

        • eny

I like Gong, the story is new, even though the acting not really special but it’s fine it’s rom-com not heavy drama n for Coffee prince, I don’t like the story, woman in man disguise is already done in many drama/movie

          • Eve

Yeah, but Coffee Prince was the first drama with a woman in man disguise. So you should give it a chance.

          • bd

Didn’t see much romcom in “Goong” – at least anything resembling real humor.

Otoh, CP had numerous great lines/comic moments.

  5. Juby

Yay Yoon Eun Hye is coming back with a new drama and it’s been less than a year! It seems that she’s playing an upbeat character this time and it’s always good to see her in these kind of roles πŸ™‚

I hope that Lee Dong Gun is the main lead here…

I know that him and YEH will have great chemistry since they already worked together once on a song collaboration for her Zipel CF and the MV that they released was really cute ^^

    • 5.1 Zoomie

i think he is…his character name before was Kim Sun Taek
the drama Title is Mirae-ui Suntaek…now they change his name to Kim Shin maybe to make it not similar with Joogun-ui Taeyang (Master’s Sun)…

  6. Faye

Jung Yong-Hwa and Yoon Eun-Hye has got to be one of the most attractive but orthodontically challenged pairings in K-dramaland. Away from the shallow side, though, this sounds like it has potential. Not sure if I’ll watch -have to wait and see what others think first after a few episodes.

    • 6.1 lily

lmao that was my first thought. they’re both famous for having snaggletooths. (I like their uneven teeth though!)

      • 6.1.1 crizzyville

lol at this comment.. i’m thinking the same thing too.. but that what makes endearing… imperfections that sets them apart from the rest.. i wonder how the chemistry goes for both.. honestly, the love triangle seems a bit off for me (with the LDG angle but it could just be me.. probably cos i didnt see the CF both YEH and LDG starred at)

I got high hopes for this one.. I miss YEH nowadays (sorry but i pass up on I Miss You, am not gonna watch sappy dramas anytime soon) that makes me wanna start marathoning CP. So happy my download is complete!

  7. unea

certainly I can not wait to see YEH after so long, no doubt my favorite actress, this looks very promising.

  8. Cheliwel

I really hope LDW and YEH are the main couple.

    • 8.1 crizzyville

thanks another project that would certainly be dream come true for me! eyecandies galore!

    • 8.2 skelly

LDW and YEH have got to be the main couple. They are both going to act Jonghwa under the table. I suppose he can play the cheerful, dependable second lead; that seems to be within his capabilities.

      • 8.2.1 Mashiyat

You know you can at least spell his name correctly. It’s been written here so many times. It’s Yonghwa.
Jonghwa is the OTP name for Yonghwa and Jonghyun.

      • 8.2.2 skelly

Yes, correction! Sorry, they will act Yonghwa under the table. It is Yonghwa who cannot act; although probably Jonghwa can’t act, either.

        • charlie

          funny lol

  9. OMG

M excited about this drama…I loveYoon Eun-Hye and I’m hoping this drama turns out to be good…

  10. 10 lily

This is going to be up against some heavy competition with Ha Ji Won & Choi Ji Woo’s dramas..

    • 10.1 akikisetsu

But, Choi Ji Woo’s up-coming drama is gonna compete with the latter half of Good Doctor, so it may not really stand a chance, ratings-wise.

But happy to hear LDG back in dramaland. Hoping that Yonghwa has vastly improve otherwise it’s really gonna be an uneven otp leg.

    • 10.2 kumon

this competition seems interesting! I’m rooting for Ha Ji Won! Yaaaay!

  11. 11 JWspazz

who’s the main male lead then ? Yonghwa or Lee Donggun ? or it’s unidentified yet ? haa.

    • 11.1 JWspazz

okay. I kind of love dramas which set in broadcast station. remind me with the very first KDrama I watch before, All About Eve. lead by Jang Donggun & Chae Rim.

    • 11.2 ricky

The lead is Lee Dong-gun and Jung Yong-hwa is his rival.

      • 11.2.1 JWspazz

I see. hahaa. I’ve doubt since Yonghwa’s cast in Heirs before but turns it down despite the facts I heard that’s because he will be the second lead & the company wants him as first lead.

        • Hanjae

Those were not facts, but completely unfounded rumours.

      • 11.2.2 Dramafed1782

Isn’t Lee Dong Gun in the same agency as that of CN Blue?

        • Annie

Odds are that JYH was a package deal and that he was only confirmed after LDG said yes.

    • 11.3 sogazelle

Lee Dong Gun is the main lead with YEH…

KBS confirmed that in the official release.

  12. 12 ricky

I realized with Yoon Eun-hye every kiss scene she does is always good. Good to see Lee Dong-gun back too. Now let’s hope for lot’s of smoochin’.

  13. 13 crazedlu

Not a fan of her. At all. So pass for me. And her dramas tend to hardcore flop anyways. Meh.

    • 13.1 pogo

Yeah, because 3 out of of the 5 dramas she’s done getting ratings in/above the mid-late teens = ‘all her dramas tend to hardcore flop’.

I get not being a fan, but you could at least throw shade for reasons that can’t be factually proven wrong.

(and for the record, I detest My Fair Lady and do not for the life of me understand how its ratings stayed as high as they did)

      • 13.1.1 crazedlu

whoops. should’ve clarified. hardcore flop = ghastly story with infuriating characters.

    • 13.2 lily

I think she’s highly overrated by people on this site. She has chosen some good projects but she’s not the great actress her fans portray her as.

      • 13.2.1 sabar

yes the fans that make her looks great, actually she’s still mediocre, plus lots of media plays which we know lots of them are insincere and full of motives.

      • 13.2.2 ilikemangos

There’s definitely a certain charm about her + coupled with natural face = An actress we all want to be good.
I do acknowledge the fact that she’s a bit overrated — she’s not the greatest actress of her generation nor is she the worst.
I like her, though. And i hope that this project goes well, considering her recent dramas have been meh for me.

        • MariD

I agree with this, she might not be the best actress out there but she is charming. Lie to me was my first Kdrama so I will always have a soft spot for her in my heart. That and the fact that both Gong & CP are in my list of top 10 dramas. I have nothing but good wishes for her.

        • bd

I don’t think YEH is overrated for her acting since she has received much criticism for it over the years.

Now, whether she warrants her popularity – that’s another question, but her star started to rise during her X-Man years (seems like even more so than during her Baby-Vox days) and was cemented by “Goong” and “Coffee Prince” (being a lead in 2 hugely popular dramas will do that for ya).

        • Kiara

Agreed but I’ve never been a fan of idol actors except for Siwon in his first sageuk. YEH has her charm and the camera loves her but as far as acting goes, she’s neither terrible or amazing.

  14. 14 zsa

    Yeay!!! for the leads,,,,and err…Yong Hwa…..
I’ve missed LDG, he was awesome in that ‘changing partners’ movie….can’t wait!!
And these writers…they have awesome dramas under their belt!

  15. 15 snow_white

I’m adding this to the list of dramas I’m planning to watch…..I like all the leads and the writer did King 2 Hearts….so that is enough to gain my interest…

I like Jung Yong Hwa A LOT actually but not a die hard fan….

  16. 16 pogo

Oooh, it’ll be out as soon as October?! I always look forward to YEH in dramas, even if the dramas themselves turn out to be underwhelming.

Though I did like her melo turn in I Miss You, it’ll be nice to see her in something that isn’t going to make me cry every other episode too.

  17. 17 Mar

This is Trotwood’s Smoulder Shoulders guy as the lead, right? πŸ˜‰ I am not familiar with this actor and look forward to the smoulders.

I like Jong Yong-hwa, he’s very likable. I am not one to have issues with idols in dramas. I liked his work in You’re Beautiful, but really thought he seemed lost in Heartstrings. I just see him as cannon fodder next to YEH. I would like nothing more to be totally wrong!

I hope this turns out to be a great project.

    • 17.1 Waiting

      Yup Mar…that’s him! LOL

    • 17.2 trotwood

Should I apologize to Lee Don Gun (and his–other–fans) now that I have associated him (or his shoulders)with bacon on this site? (Note to self: never try to develop metaphors when hungry). I had to go back and see what I said. I did not realize I got so many comments!

I am not that excited about the story, but I am so looking forward to seeing him back on screen that I will try to watch even though I have banned myself from watching dramas during the semester (which starts on Sept 3).

I really want this to be good for everyone involved. YEH needs it because people seem to be doubting her choices. LDG needs it because it is his army come back project. JYH needs it to have a chance to prove to people that can carry a role in a real grown up show. KBS needs it because it will be going up against Ha Ji Won in a saeguk. I need it because I like the idea of a female writer with a female PD.

      • 17.2.1 abishrg

I agree with your comment, for the sake of the ones involved in this project, this has to be a good drama
        *fingers crossed*

      • 17.2.2 Mar

I like your reasons for thinking positive for this drama! Well said.

  18. 18 irumi

My first thought was YEH now have a good reason to appear in Running

    • 18.1 Andrea

I squealed so much when I read your comment, but then I remembered that this is a KBS drama and Running Man is from SBS. Sadness.

      • 18.1.1 Mia

With this drama being on KBS, I hope these three will at least be guests on Happy Together to promote the show. I don’t think they’d be allowed on Running Man until after the show wraps the way Lee Jong Suk and Kim Woo Bin were after School 2013 (another KBS drama) wrapped. But Future Choice would have to be a big hit for that to happen. I think we’ll definitely see the cast of Heirs on Running Man.

    • 18.2 mia

Yonghwa is RM PD’s fav as every time he made music comeback, he’ll guest on RM
so i think when the drama aired, if Yonghwa is going, YEH can also follows

      • 18.2.1 Waiting

Mia, I hope you are right. I know many folks would tine in just to see her and Spartakooks reunite onscreen.

Yong hwa is also a pretty good player on the show so that helps!

  19. 19 raindrops1

I’ve been a fan of YEH since CP so I’m happy to hear that she will be back with a new drama. This one sounds to have a more upbeat (I’m hoping) tone. *crosess fingers*

  20. 20 Evelia

The only dramas that I liked from YHE are Coffee Prince and Lie To Me.
Her last drama I am just going to forget it exists. Looking forward to this drama but with hesitation.
Hopefully it will be a good drama.

    • 20.1 ilikemangos

I actually really liked her in goong too since that was the drama that put her on the map for me(not the greatest show, but it was sort of a crack for me).

  21. 21 Andrea

I really like Yoon Eun Hye and I’m definitely on this boat because of Hong Jin Ah. Even if the sisters are not together for this one, I’m certain that the writing for this drama will be good. October is going to be a great month, so many drama premieres!

  22. 22 kimjandi

so excited to see eun hye again!!!

  23. 23 rae

Does this remind anyone of the movie Project Makeover?

    [From Wikipedia]

Project Makeover (Hangul: μ–Έλ‹ˆκ°€ κ°„λ‹€; RR: Eonni-ga Ganda; also known as Operation Makeover or Go Go Sister) is a 2007 South Korean film. In an online poll conducted by web portal Daum, Korean netizens named Project Makeover as the worst film of 2007.

Na Jung-ju is a 30 year-old woman whose life is going nowhere, and she blames her misery on a failed high school romance with Jo Ha-ni, who has since become a famous singer. Her old schoolfriend Oh Tae-hun, who used to have a big crush on her, is now a successful and wealthy businessman, and she regrets not having gone out with him. After being given the chance to travel back in time, Jung-ju goes back to 1994 where she tries to convince her younger self to date the future businessman.

    • 23.1 july

yes, it’s similiar story but different background. at first half story is interesting, but later it’s become boring, despite it has happy ending. I haven’t watch Nine time travel, but people seem compare mirae’s choice with nine

  24. 24 Mystisith

LDG is the only one thing/person which grabs my interest in this show so I will pass. One or 2 pics of him I can keep in my folders will be enough.

  25. 25 kumi

The plot hasn’t picked up my interest πŸ™

  26. 26 Hmm...

Isn’t this basically Nine but with a female main character?

  27. 27 wits

Yey! Finally something to look forward to. This is the first time in my short life as k-drama addict that I am NOT watching anything! I’m sooo looking forward to October!

Yoon Eun Hye is my most favourite actress and Jung Yong Hwa is part of my favourite band. So I would love to see them together in a drama. Well, I also liked Lee Dong Gun in Lovers in Paris, so he is the icing on what is already a very yummy cake.

  28. 28 Luzie

I loved her in CP but her choices since then have sucked and this is coming from someone who LOVED i miss you lol. I can’t wait to see this and hopefully she’ll give into the character as opposed to trying to pretty it up every scene.

  29. 29 Waiting

Admittedly, I am happy with the cast as I like them all. So, I am in! πŸ™‚

Dang, so much to watch before the end of the year!

  30. 30 lovedramas

Hmm… the plot to me seems like something that I would like. And if JYH can step it up in his 2nd lead role, I can see myself liking this. I like YEH but haven’t been too into her last few works. I just hope there’s a good script for her here. LDG – I liked him too before, but I really haven’t seen him in anything in forever. I skipped his last drama. So we’ll see. But one thing is that YEH usually has great chemistry with her costars so, it’ll be interesting to me to see how it plays out onscreen.

  31. 31 cherryng

I love YEH in all her dramas..Script writers please make a good story

    • 31.1 Mia

I totally agree. There have been so many mediocre dramas. No one wants to see the same tired formula anymore. If this is going to be just another melodrama people will pass on it and go straight to the competition. It’s definitely high on my list because I love the leads, but it’s going to have stiff competition from Choi Ji Woo in the remake of “Kaseifu no Mita” unless “The Good Doctor” has ratings so high it keeps people from watching that show. Don’t think the remake of “Kaseifu no Mita” will be anywhere near as bold as the original, but it will definitely be different as far as K-dramas go and that alone could be good enough to create a buzz that makes people jump networks when “The Good Doctor” ends . And then there’s Ha Ji Won’s drama. “Future Choice” has a great lead in with “The Good Doctor” but the writer is really going to have to hook people BIG TIME so they don’t jump ship.

  32. 32 HallyuQueen

haha haters gonna hate and bitches gonna bitch! whatever! shes is love by so many people for one reason, she deserves it! YEH IS LOVE!

    • 32.1 Faye

Yes, because obviously the only reason anybody could dislike someone’s acting is they’re a hater or a bitch. Not because they have an actual unbiased opinion based on what they’ve seen of the person’s acting.

For the record, I like YEH a lot, and I think she has a lot of charisma and talent. But calling someone who feels differently names is not only childish and rude, it’s pointless on a site like this. You can’t have any sort of discussion if your response is going to be, “What, you don’t like my idol/bias? Hater! Bitch!” If you want to spread Korean culture (isn’t that the cornerstone of Hallyu?), it’s probably best to engage people with opposing viewpoints, not offend them, no?

Also, the idea that having many fans translates to actual talent is really dubious. I’m not one of those snobs who deride everything popular on principle, but I also think there were many movements/people/etc with many fans who were very overhyped.

      • 32.1.1 eny

I don’t think think so, sometimes i don’t like somebody acting but i’m not hate him/her, i just couldn’t feel their emotion when they act but sometimes i still watch their drama if the story is good n the other cast is good so they could cover the weak acting

For yoon Eun Hye she’s not the best actress but she’s not bad too, Actually I miss her in good drama, I like Goong n My fair lady , Lie to me is interesting in the beginning but few end episode is predictable n kind of boring

  33. 33 ilikemangos

This plot sounds so meh to me, which is surprising since the world of K2H was so colorful. Then again, the promotional stills/teasers weren’t all that great for K2H either. But then it aired and i fell in love by the end of episode 1. Also, the director played a huuge part in all that.
I’m just going to hope that that would be the case with this show too, even if the director will be the one to make it or break it. (I looked up the PD and she’s a woman! Why are they so rare in k-dramaland?)
I like the cast and i like the writer. Those are enough reasons to check out this show.

  34. 34 momosa

Aah LDG – the arrogant & bad boy (looks & character included) that I can’t seem to hate. Welcome back! and teaming with YEH, the screen is already sizzling (at least in my imagination)…

  35. 35 meanrice

Yong-Hwa and Lee Dong-Gun could be brothers.

    • 35.1 meanrice

Ugh and by that i mean they strongly resemble.

I’m still hoping for a YEH and Lee Dong-Wook Pairing.

Or a screwball comedy with YEH and Uhm-Force. But then again I am patiently waiting for her to guest on Running Man.

      • 35.1.1 happysloth

A romantic comedy with YEH and Uhm-Force would be nice.

Oh, and for some utterly selfish reasons I’d really really like to see YEH and Cha Tae Hyun!

  36. 36 geese

okay i’m gonna watch this let me see if yongwa of cnblue will get a new revised role apart from the past role he have…

  37. 37 MizzMizzEka

Yeaaaaa, I ‘ve been waiting this so long.
Lee Dong Gun was the 1st actor that make me falling in love to addicted to korean drama, plus YEH being his OTP, oh my oh my. Plus again Yong Hwa that have similar looks lika Lee Dong Gun.
I hope they would appear to Running Man, pleaseee??

  38. 38 lol

    but yong jung hwa? -_-

  39. 39 John Smith

Seems like a nice concept but I bet I can tell you what the story is going to turn out like in the end.

Young Mirae (call her YM to avoid confusion) is going to be liking the lead announcer and may even get to be with him in the future. Later on she will discover that the grandson liked her as well and was in truth an undercover boss. So now to get a better life she who has now become Future Mirae (now known as FM) will regret her decision for ignoring him etc and not getting the good life. So she will go in the past so that her YM will get to notice and like grandson, and tips on how to attract him.

Why can one not see the disaster before it actually happens πŸ™ if the guy ever finds out about this he will feel betrayed biig time. πŸ™‚ Plus not to mention that messing with time always seems to get back to you at some point. So even if you have the good life for the moment in the end KABOOM !!!!!

Lets see if I am proven wrong this time though.

    • 39.1 Annie

Ugh… I hope you’re wrong because if JYH gets a sizeable amount of screen time in this drama, I may end up screaming. What a shitty actor.

    • 39.2 kumi

“Why can one not see the disaster before it actually happens?”.

Some people can, but that’s a God-given gift. Non-attachment to events is also a part of this gift. Usually they won’t use it for their own benefit or for the benefit of somebody unqualified.

  40. 40 bd

LDG was always just OK to me – always preferred his former better half (Han Ji-hye).

    My girl…. I LOVE HER …I am in .

  43. 43 Amalia

Really looking forward to the drama, particularly because I’m a fan of Yoon Eun-hye. πŸ˜€ It does sound very similar to Nine so I’m going to approach it with caution.

I just hope Yobghwa’s acting has improved & it’s funny how FNC Ent. Always managed to have both their actors under one drama

I personally dont get why ppl call yeh acting mediocire .. like seriously.. abide her choices i projects .. every role she has potrayed has got soo much depth n layers… she is one of those that i can say that knows hw to emote solely byher eyes..she can play as childish a character as goo eun chan and anequally equalified career woman as tbe one in Lie To Me. Also she was very good as a rich brat in My Fair Lady..though its not her fault that the story took a downrun..blame the writer..alsofor all IMiss You might have the worst writer but by gawd seungho n eun hye were the soul that kept it alive .. if werent for them.. nobody wud have watched it.. in conclusion. She is not the most paid actresse

  46. 46 kdrama

    * contd.. therefore she is not one of the most paid actresses for no reason.. stupid laptop decided to post stuff incomplete.. sorry abt that πŸ™‚

so tired, Yeh’s fans bragging about the highest paid actress-it’s a shame compared to the standard of her acting. She asked for the price lol, and the producer is willing to pay because of Japanese market, not because of her talent.

im curious about the standard you have..
clearly, YEH is a good actress..

I will watch this simply because of Yonghwa, plus I miss Lee Dong-gun! I just hope Yong-hwa’s character is close to his character for he is fantastic in Running Man. Wonder what Eun-hye’s kissing scenes will be. yay!

when First time i see jung yong hwa i think he’s resemble lee dong gun a lot.now both of them in one screen,i feel like i will see two jung yong hwa

this is an insult to lee dong gun…he is older, why don’t we say you’ll see 2 lee dong gun
