Kolorful Palette: Runaway bride [Marriage Not Dating]

I watched the first eight episodes of Marriage Not Dating in two days, so I guess I must really like it (especially with all the other dramas currently on my plate). I honestly didn’t have high hopes that I would enjoy this show since I didn’t particularly enjoy Yeon Woo-jin in Ojakkyo Brothers or Arang and the Magistrate. I didn’t think he had the charisma to pull off a leading role, but I have to eat my words (or in this case my thoughts) because he commands the screen far more than I expected, and has me rooting for him despite his character’s flaws.

I fully expected to have second-lead syndrome, but Jung Jin-woon still has a ways to go with his acting, and being cute can only take him so far. I’m loving the love triangle dynamic in general though, so I’m not even close to begrudging him his screen time. It’s a bit unusual for all three characters to be in the know, but it’s fantastic to watch not only because of jealous hilarity, but also because it forces them to face their feelings sooner than they probably would otherwise.

So far the pacing has been excellent, and I think Ki-tae transitioned from using Jang-mi to realizing that he likes her at just the right time. I was just starting to get annoyed with him for keeping the whole farce going but if he’s doing it because of genuine feels I’m completely behind it. Sure…he could just come clean and confess, but what fun would that be? He’s got other issues to work out first anyways, such as the concept of not genuinely wanting to be alone in the first place.

Ki-tae is always trying to change Jang-mi and make her care less for others, but instead she’s the one teaching him to care more, and I personally think he needs the change more than she does. It’s pretty easy to see that he’s the kind of person who is naturally caring, but it’s like he’s been working his whole life to stifle those better impulses for the sake of independence. He’s realized that he wants Jang-mi, and that’s pretty huge, but I think it’ll be a while before he understands that he wants a whole different kind of life. His family has done quite the number on him, but it’s amazing what the right person can do, isn’t it?

Jang-mi is the real star of the show for me, and mixes just the right amount of heart with comedic timing and charm. Even though she’s a bit of a doormat at times, she’s got so many opinions and so much spunk that she rarely feels like one. She doesn’t just have abandonment issues and seek out acceptance from others. When she helps others it comes from a genuine place of empathy, and I don’t want to see that change about her. Even when she’s going to ridiculous lengths on someone else’s behalf, she never loses herself or her beliefs, and I admire the way she stands up to Ki-tae’s mom, not because she’s trying to help Ki-tae, but out of sincerity. Ultimately I think she just needs to draw the line when she’s hurting herself, and understand that “helping” isn’t always helpful in the end.

Despite my appreciation of Jang-mi, I’m glad she has finally reached her breaking point (which to her credit, took quite some time!). Trying on wedding dresses with Ki-tae’s mother threw her into an emotional gauntlet. For a moment she enjoyed it, but then she struggled with enjoying it, and before long she was hating every second. Ki-tae wasn’t there when she needed him, and she was forced once again to choose between their parents’ feelings, Ki-tae’s feelings, and her own. I drew this scene because her running away was a culmination of so many things, and so many relationships. I did almost no shading and kept the image simple because I wanted to reflect how Jang-mi is hopefully starting to see things (simpler!).

Up to this point I think she has been pretty confused about who she is helping and who is helping her in any given moment. Who genuinely cares for her? Who doesn’t? Who is being sincere, and who is manipulating her? It’s time for her to throw away all the confusing layers and external forces on her life, and honestly consider herself. I think she’s been hoping for some magical solution that would make everyone happy and spare everyone’s feelings, but hopefully this scene marked a concrete realization that she can’t fix everything for everyone. In her case, running away didn’t feel like running away, but instead like she was finally facing the situation and owning up to how it actually makes her feel. Hopefully Episode 9 confirms that, and she works on figuring out what she actually wants.

I think it could be a while before Jang-mi fully realizes that she has more romantic feelings for Ki-tae than she does for Yeo-reum, but I’m okay with that since she and Ki-tae both have so much growing to do on their own. This is definitely a case where opposites are perfect for each other, and between the two of them is the perfect balance point. People always say that you can’t truly change a person, but you can certainly bring out what’s already there beneath the surface, and that’s all these two really need.

I can’t say that I’m thrilled to have found another drama to watch (there’s not enough time!) but I guess it’s payback for complaining about not having enough dramas to watch in the spring. Somehow I’m still super excited about the Night Watchman premiere though. The costumes! I’m cautiously optimistic that it won’t be terrible, and I can almost guarantee that it’s what I’ll be drawing next week.

I actually been waiting a day for episode 10 recap but so happy you decided to draw this scene out..everything is quite spot on about the turmoil she deals with emotionally while having to juggle relationships between kt, yr, kt mom and so on..there wasn't much i would change for her other then caring far too much for people in need but her empathy comes from a place of her own lonliness which makes her all the more adoring of a character..i love that she goes all in into most things but that is also her biggest downfall..she doesnt know how to hold back and when u string yourself out for every situation..u start to rip apart yourself..

It's 하루만 (Just One Day) by 손호영 (Son Ho Young) & 데니안 (Danny Ahn). :)

Does anyone happen to know the song and artist at the beginning of episode 12?

I love how simple and bright this drawing is - it definitely represents that this is a moment of clarity for Jang Mi and it's really a point where she realizes that things have gone too far and they need to change. Episode 10 is particularly satisfying but I won't say more since you haven't yet seen it.

I agree with your reflections on Jang Mi and Ki Tae and I appreciate you pointing out that KiTae is naturally caring. It can be diffcult to see at times because he's often so blunt and seemingly aloof and can be a bit boorish but it's clear that he is affected every time he sees Jang Mi being humiliated or brought low even at the beginning when he barely knows her (except for their first meeting, of course). I think Ki Tae struggles because he WANTS to help and be there for her (and others) but he's worked so hard to harden his heart and keep people at arm's length that he almost doesn't know how to come back from that. He really doesn't want people to know he cares or even to admit it to himself at times. Fortunately he has Jang Mi now to help bulldoze a way forward for him. I love that you can truly see how they're good for each other and how they can help the other person find balance in themselves and their lives and I'm rooting for the show to show us their growth naturally and satisfyingly.

Oh me too! I finally gave in to peer pressure and marathoned 8 episodes yesterday and then watched this week's 9 and 10. This drama is so ridiculously addicting and heartfelt, I'm kicking myself for starting it so early because I now need the next episode but have nowhere to look.

Yeon Woo-jin and Han Groo is so good. SO SO SO good. They're really killing their roles and their chemistry is just fantastic. I love that they can make both Ki-tae and Jang-mi - who're both just ordinary drama characters - into characters that feel like real people. There's something so domestic about their characters, like somewhere they could exist even if the situations they find themselves in is just so absurd.

I won't talk much about episode 10 here so as to not spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen it, but I just love this show. So far, 2014 has been a huge disappointment so Marriage, Not Dating is a breath of fresh air. Keep up the epicness, drama! I'm counting on you...

Fanderay, BEAUTIFUL DRAWING!!! Your work is not only visually beautiful, but also viscerally evocative and beautiful. Thank you!

Love this site more than any other site!

Love the contributors and their insights. Fanderay, your remarks about this episode were especially meaningful as they deepened my enjoyment of this series. I kinda got some of your points on my own, but not as profoundly as you expressed.

Thanks again, and keep it coming!

OMG never thought i be so addicted to another drama like this..the drawing is such a visual tale for the people not having seen the show..although it is a rom-com..there is far more emotions then i had anticipated..nothing seems to drag with this show for me since i never feel there is a dull moment..each scene or metaphor doesnt seem to add up until later on the show when everything is put into perspective..i have already rewatch episode 10 3 times from different sites to get all the translations down..i hardly write much on blog sites too but im so addicted to this drama that i want to give my opinion and read others as well..

I'm so happy you decided to watch this! I love your artwork and your musings a lot :) They're quickly becoming some of my favorite posts. They provide a nice overall look at the characters and the trajectory of the drama so far.

I totally agree about Jang-mi! I know I should feel like she's a doormat sometimes, but for some reason, I never feel that way. Han Groo is just playing her with such spunk and heart. I personally knew that Yeon Woo-jin would kill it in this role, but he's doing even better than I thought! I just love them both.

I feel that Jang Mi, even in the middle of this big con, is the only character who is truly herself. She reacts as herself and doesn't stop to think "oh, what do I want to show?" first. She's not operating with any complicated agenda except to (originally) get back at her ex. Everyone else seems to be hiding their true selves: Ki Tae wants to be the cold sophisticate, HH seems sweet but schemed hard to trap a rich bf, YR is hiding something behind that bland smile that disarms others, HD insists that he's a player but as of ep 10 maybe not so much. SA - well, I can only hope her outer veneer is fake, but she may be certifiable. And KT Mom wrote the book on hidden agendas. I'm still dying to know WHAT HAPPENED to KT in that apartment when he was a child that turned it into his Fortress of Solitude.

Lovely picture and I understood right away why it seems flooded with light.

Yunno what?
I feel so happy that there I am totally not alone of going bananas - waiting impatiently for yet another Friday, asking myself again and again, why did I had a peek at the 1st episode when it started and now I can't stop!
and for the first time, I had also watching and re-watching episode 9 & 10, reading the subtitles ever so closely, pausing it so that I won't missed the translation!
Oh no... how crazy is that?

Indeed Jang-mi & Ki-tae affection towards each other, and still in the state of denial, the realisation, then accepting... humming and drumming into their conscience - really getting under your skin isn't it?

I am not only enjoying the show, episode by episode, now I am also craving reading the comments and views of the viewers!
I have been waiting - keep on checking if there's a recap for episode 10 and found your lovely drawing Fanderay! what a treat! Thanks so much :)

I feel as if I am given something to sooth me down in my search of sharing this buzzing anticipation of a more sizzling scenes between Jang-mi & Ki-tae and the soul-connection between Jang-mi & Ki-tae's mom! he he he!

I marathoned the first eight episodes in two days, too. Would have been one day (finished the first seven in one day), but it was getting late and I had work the next day. I kept hearing Marriage Not Dating being called "the crack drama of the year," so I was like, "That's it. I have to watch it." Unlike you, however, I loved Yeon Woo Jin in Arang and the Magistrate to the point of questioning my morals for falling in love with a murderer, so I knew he would make a charismatic lead actor when given the chance. His acting is so convincing here; I adore all the cute facial expressions Ki Tae makes. I never once had second-lead syndrome in this drama. I'm of the opinion that Jung Jin Woon can act and is the best actor in 2AM, but every time Yeo Reum smiles his signature smile, I want to slap him.

Beautiful drawing, Fanderay! I was so mad at Ki Tae at the end of episode 8; I was screaming at my computer, "Tell her she's pretty! Go take her hand and put her in your car!" Ki-tae is always trying to change Jang-mi and make her care less for others, but instead she’s the one teaching him to care more... I love this line; it is so true. He keeps warning her not to get her feelings involved; always play it cool because the other person is never invested in the relationship as much as she is. But now he is learning it's okay to not want to be alone and to let people into his life. Han Groo is amazing; I will never stop singing her praises.

WOW!!! thats really beautiful...

onto the show..ugh!!! im killing myself for starting this show without letting it run it run all the way through..im watching fated to love u, joseon gunma and i can wait it out till the episodes hit but this show is becoming my addiction..

im with u on yoon woo jin and his previous roles..i could care less for him in ojakyo brothers so i came in with low expectations..but boy am i at a lost for words..i dont think there is any other actor that conveys all his emotions that he can through his facial expressions alone..

then there is han groo..man this girl can act..i watch killer k jus to see how she was in that and it was so badass..couldnt even tell it was the same actress other then when she started doing leg kicks and splits while cooking..lol..lee si young and lee min jung were my favorite actress becuase they had the best expressions but han groo with her eye rows and facial twitches got me switching it up now..

these two have such great chemitry together instead of jus one person that's comedic while the other plays off their performance with a more suttle like in my girl..these two command the screen by themselves and together they are jus gold...

Thank you fanderay for the drawing and the commentary! The picture is so pretty~

I love marriage not dating, and ep 10 is so good that make up for my slight disappointment about ep 9. Jangmi's weird gestures are back ahaha the one in the restaurant when she saw Gitae came. It was hilarous, and amusing. Han Groo is pretty and talented. I instantly love her!

I want to read ep 10 recap :) but reading fanderay post is as good, so I'm happpy :D. Go MnD!

I'm really enjoying this drama and agree that the timing has been great! The two leads really make the drama... I'm loving Yun WooJin and Han Groo so much! They really are portraying their characters with so much heart and emotion. It really draws me in and has me rooting for them.

One unfortunate thing (that Fanderay also touches on in this article) is the casting of the supporting characters. Haneul could have been such a bigger threat if acted more believably. Don't get me wrong... Jin woon is so cute and I definitely appreciated the beach scene in ep 9... But his acting just isn't there. I feel like Haneul's character had the potential to really break the viewer's heart...for example in ep 10, when he's like "I wish you didn't let yourself be caught by me... I'm trying so hard not to notice" I feel like it should have made me really feel for him...But the actor does not deliver. I do, however, much prefer him to Hyunhee and Se-ah though. Seriously... Hyunhee is such a terrible character. Badly written and even more badly acted. I don't feel for her at all... I don't understand her at all... I don't think she is supposed to come off as a total bad guy, but she does. Se-ah is also almost unrelateable, although I can tolerate her much better than Hyunhee.

Despite the talent lacking in the supporting characters, the mains make up for it and has me impatient waiting for Friday!!!

THANKS Fanderay for sharing the overall love for this drama, and your beautiful artistic expression of impulsive and empathetic Jang Mi.

Was a little hesitant when I stumbled upon this in ep 1 (all that clingyness and inability to take no)... but by the end of ep 1, I was totally sold to go onto ep 2.

The rest is history. Have been a faithful viewer watching raws of all new episodes out, and then re-watching later with subs O~o... and a regular reader of recaps eversince.

Yeon Woo Jin - didn't really enjoy him in Ojakkyo Brothers, nor When A Man Loves (Song Seung Heun, Shin Se Kyung) where I just found his cocky smirk a tad irritating at times. But he's just totally nailing it for me here as Ki-Tae.

While in love with the drama and the OTP just as much everyone else, and appreciating it's her genuineness and sincerity that propels her very impulsiveness to just jump from one thing to another .... I also do find Jang Mi's sometimes OTT reactions to many things a little hard to stomach, even if they are comedic.
= Like gagging and yanking Ki Tae off all the way back to his office from the cafe, for instance. So maybe I am nit picking ... just questioning the necessity for that much exaggeration (since it just makes everything look triple suspicious).

The general wishy-washyness about Jang Mi's feelings bothers me at times. From one ex to his bestie ... and too, and back to Ki Tae. The pendulum swings make me think again about her standards and choices because her bar seems so low. Like what even attracted her to Hoon Dong in the first place?

It's taking 'go with the flow' to the max, to the point she can almost be considered 'easy' to any onlooker ... moving from and kissing one guy after another with such ease.

Also have to say I am a little dissapointed with this wkend's offerings.

Ep 9 (and the element of disbelief, esp all of them at the beach) which derailed from the so far rather realistic (even in its bizarreness) narration.
Ep 10 fared better but what I am really hoping for the earlier magic of ep 1-8.

Such a good point about HoonDong! In the beginning it looked like they had known each other for a while and she said she was genuinely in love with him. She was even sure she wanted to marry him! But now she has nothing left for him at all and it doesn't even seem like they had a history. So weird!

Hoon Dong - though we see much later there is more to him beyond being such a weak ineffectual mommy's boy and player (like being so non-grudging and such a loyal and proactive friend to Ki Tae. A friend who even bothers to warn off Yeo Reum. This, while being a former love 'rival' who lost out 'double crosser' buddy Ki Tae) ...

To the extent that I feel greatly shortchanged for Hoon Dong that he's now 'burdened' with Hyun-hee's pregnancy and accepted the whole package deal. She got off easy.
Sure, he's the other parent; but he was technically taken advantage of, and not a consenting partner in the whole process.

Long and s
I really doubt there were more layers to HD initially for Jang Mi to observe or see, beyond all the sweet talking and charm.

So for me, Jang Mi's standards and choices are just suspect. And when she's wishy washy about everything and is generous with her kisses ... it's just somehow 'easy'. Not to mention very unfair to the people she dishes them to - poor Yeo Reum for eg. How cruel and confusing is it for him?

While I understand where you are coming from with the whole JangMi being "easy", I respectfully disagree with you.

I think when she came off "easy" was when she was setting up that ridiculous hotel room scene for Hoon Dong, who she obviously didn't know very well.

But when you put that aside, If you remember, Haneul kissed JangMi first... and during the time of the first kiss in the kitchen, JangMi actually liked Haneul. I think that is okay and doesn't make her "easy". It seems really soon to the viewer, but I think in the drama's time, a few months had passed since HoonDong.

Once JangMi realizes she likes KiTae, she avoids kissing Haneul and even jumps back at his touch. She only accepts kisses from KiTae because that's where her heart is.

Now... if she was going around doing more than kissing, I might agree but I think "easy" is a little harsh at this point.

Totally agree with your point about the HoonDong/HyunHee pregnancy story. I hate that they did that to him and I really dislike HyunHee's character.

It really drives me crazy seeing people blaming JangMi completely for YeoReum's hurt feelings as though he has no part in this. Is he not an adult? I'm not saying it was a good idea for her to try dating him while maintaining the ruse with KiTae (that was a terrible idea for many reasons) but the point is, she came clean to him about what was going on because she didn't want there to be secrets between them and HE wanted to keep dating her. At literally any step of the way, he could have said, "this is too hard/crazy/weird. Let's stop for now or forever" or whatever but he kept going. He is not some innocent victim. He knew about Jang Mi's relationship with Hoon Dong and connection to Ki Tae when he first started pursuing her. He's the one who's been flirting with her since day one even though he knew things were weird with her. Even now that she's developing feelings for KiTae, she's unsure about herself and doesn't want to completely push him away because she's hoping that this is just a temporary reaction to the kiss. Again I'm not saying that's right or that JangMi doesn't make poor decisions when it comes to men and dating (that's a major flaw of hers) but this is not all on her. YeoReum could have walked away any time but he chose to keep trying to date her and no one was forcing him to.

As for what she saw in Hoon Dong, the flashbacks we saw showed that he was sweet and considerate and charming in a goofy way which is why she fell for him. She had no idea how much of a cowardly weasel he could be or how not serious he was about her but when she finally saw who he is, she realized that their relationship wasn't worth much mourning. And even so, she still didn't throw him away completely - that's why we had that scene with her pulling him out of the pool, etc.

Ultimately JangMi definitely has poor judgement when dating which is further impaired by her desperate need for connection and love to feed her crippling loneliness but she doesn't set out to hurt anyone.

Not blaming Jang-mi completely but saying she is also responsible for stringing YR along with her blowing hot and cold.

I was not even a YR sympathizer pre Ep 9. In fact from neutral fencesitter I was getting increasingly irritated by his constant smiling... and cockblocking by appearing everywhere in any loaded situation where Ki tae could have shone ( the samgeytang incident, for instance).

But while sure YR went into this with his eyes fully open to the fake semi commitment ... he was also constantly reassured by Jang Mi that nothing was going on. Even as recent as her exaggerated 'denial' of the latest kiss between Ki-tae and her. To go to such exaggerated lenghts as to drag Ki-tae all the way back to his office.

Even as realization dawns that she now has the feels for Ki-tae's kiss, Jang-mi is still hedging. She is NOT communicating that she is confused. Instead of coming clean with YR ... she makes excuses to prematurely terminate their latest kiss - what mixed message is that still sending YR??

And her constant clarifications that it is all fake. What can YR think? After it was HIS(YR) head she was cosying up to on Ki-tae's couch in the samgetang episode ... but Ki-tae's couch she chooses to collapse on when piss drunk in ep 10. How is that not confusing for YR?? Kind helpful person she may be ... but when it comes to relationships, her flakiness in dealing with the revolving men/kissing episodes has me questioning how she sets her bar.

I had no sympathy for YR before ... after eps 9 and 10 --- I feel sorry for him.

0

It bothers me a lot when ppl comment that YangMi is easy because one of the aspects of the show that I like a lot is its approach to realistic dating situations. In real life, it's ok for you to kiss several guys before settling on one. What's wrong with that? YR and YM were attracted to each other and so they made out over a ramen pot. YM kissed KiTae because of her over abundance amount of empathy that she gives to everyone not just KiTae and YR at this point knew about the ruse already and still chose to be with her so it's not like he got blindsided or something.

I don't think she's aware of her budding feelings for Ki Tae until ep. 9 and 10 and it's not something she was purposely falling into so I don't get why ppl think she swings back and forth between guys. She genuinely was attracted to YR and wanted to see where that would go but sometimes initial attraction doesn't work out.

Beautiful drawing there fanderay!!

I discovered this series by accident on its first week out. Usually, I would wait for a series to accumalate like a minimum of 8 episodes, b4 I would even touch its epi no 1. But this series got me at early on. After the first 15 minutes into epi 1, I was hooked at its hijinks, and completion of epi 1, made me lapped up epi 2 (while laughing and enjoying crazy the scenes). It seems that I am not alone here. Hope , this week will bring in more.. of Jang Mi- KiTae. Poor Yeo Reum. Please recap epi 10 soon..

I've been gushing about them on the recap threads, but I don't think I can fangirl enough about YWJ and HG. I am totally one of their instant fans!

Oh my gosh, I was just going to reply to lis that a future reunion of HG and YWJ absolutely must come AFTER another show pairing her with Park Seo Joon! They were fantastic together in Warm Words. I watched it for Ji Jin Hee but stayed for HG/PSJ. Okay, maybe a little more for him but they really lit the show up. WW was an interesting show for me, the acting was all top notch. The story is repetitive and moves verrrrry slowly. Not a lot of lightness or humor but I'm glad I saw it.

I think Marriage Not Dating is going to be the biggest surprise for everyone in 2014. I don't think any of us knew what to expect beforehand. The show's premise and storyline is overused and unoriginal, the leads are lesser known and still considered as newbies in the dramaland. Both Yeon Woo-jin and Han-groo have just graduated from the second leads roles (except if you count Han's stellar perfomance in Girl K but I don't think that really counts since it's a short drama). The second leads mostly consist of idols and you know how idols' acting are stereotyped into.

BUT OH. GOD. WEREN'T WE ALL FOOLED.
This show managed to knock us off the table again and again. The leads' acting and chemistry are amazing and I daresay their chemistry is one of the best we've seen in 2014's dramas so far.

There's only 6 episodes left and I'm already missing this drama. How can that be?
