Double lives and disguises for tvN’s Hidden Identity

Hidden Identity may be a crime thriller, but based on these teasers and behind-the-scenes clips, I’m hoping for a healthy dose of fun as well. It looks like the cast is enjoying themselves and feeling comfortable around each other, what with Park Sung-woong being deadpan and droll, Yoon So-yi being teasing, and Lee Won-jong saying that the mood is great (a telltale hint: “I think there’ll be a lot of drinking going on.”)

The drama’s all about a top-secret special team (“Investigative Department 5”) that specializes in disguising themselves and going undercover. That explains the way the characters are shown wearing two outfits in their character posters below, with their street clothing and disguises on top, and their police uniforms hidden underneath. Kim Bum plays an elite officer who seems to have a bit of a wild streak; his character’s copy reads, “Careful. Even I don’t know how much of a crazy bastard I am.” He certainly has the crazy eyes. (In a good way! Kim Bum being a fierce loose cannon is a lot more interesting than him just being a perfect ace cop.)

As the principled leader of the team, Park Sung-woong is the type who’d never express his emotions outwardly, though he is a good guy who values his team. In the third video, he’s drily funny as Yoon So-yi mentions his tendency to play villains, and he comments that he’s totally played nice guys too, and that people just remember the evil dudes. (To be fair, his evil dudes are a lot more memorable!) But he’ll be “coming back to myself” (Park’s words) by playing a good guy, albeit one who doesn’t really let his feelings show. (He jokes in the video that he’d like a chance to smile openly in the drama, maybe once or twice, and Yoon So-yi quips that you’d better not miss the fleeting moment.) His poster copy reads, “Even in the worst case scenario, the mission will proceed. I’ll take all the responsibility!” (I find it amusing that his two outfits are barely even different; it looks like he’s just wearing the same thing in both shots.)

Lee Won-jong, disguised as a construction worker, is the team’s link to the seedier side of society, getting valuable information passed through the back streets. His poster reads, “A police officer shouldn’t act like that. But… I’m the type to do what I want!”

And Yoon So-yi, playing the team’s “multiplayer” (also disguise expert and kickass fighter), warns, “Don’t underestimate me because I’m a woman. I’ll make sure you can’t use that man excuse again…”

Hidden Identity will follow Let’s Eat 2, breaking up tvN’s longtime rom-com Monday-Tuesday lineup in favor of action thriller. It premieres on June 16.

Unfortunately, I'm not familiar with any of the main cast except Lee Won-jong, and he cracked me up real good in GWSS. Looking forward to this! It does look like it'll be generous on the funnies and cute team bonding moments. (=

I was trying to remember Yoon So Ji and was startled to learn that she was the lead in Shadowless Sword, a movie I've been watching on and off over the last few weeks. She was the best thing about the movie. That said, she looks so frail here I'd expect her to snap a wrist if she tried to punch someone.

Yeah, YSJ was the best thing in "Shadowless Sword" which was passable entertainment.

Should catch her in "Arahan" - she does the snippy really well (despite being her 1st big acting role, she did a great job).

But she does look frail (ughh, the pressure to be rail thin - so many of these actresses, and actors, look better w/ a little meat on their bones).

Drama favorite evil ahjussi Kim Tae Hun also confirmed for this drama. Either he will be a real bad person, bad cop or bad prosecutor in this drama.

Anyway Park Swoon Woong... my handsome ahjussi. So can't wait for this one. Is this the drama where he got injured and can't attend one of his movie press conference or something?

Awww.. Bummie is like a lost puppy in the last videos. He's probably too intimidated by his sunbaenims.

This is definitely at the top of my list of dramas to watch...if not just for the trio of Kim Bum, Park Sung-woong and Lee Wong-jong (three of my fave actors) in my fave genre, crime thrillers.

But dude...almost did a double take on the first poster, not realizing that Kim Bum was on there -- I was like, who's the guy in the left corner? He looks mature now, growing out of his baby face :( But I agree...looking this way is much better than the usual "perfect" good looking cop of typical kdramas, for sure.

I thought the premiere will be very soon considering they've been releasing things for a while now, but I'm glad they're not rushing things. This speaks highly of the production team.
