Running Man: Episode 248

This week, our cast and guests will be up against the scariest punishment this show has seen yet. Friendships will be tested and tension will run high as everyone must do their best to avoid taking the plunge that awaits the unlucky. Winning in today’s games will come with great rewards and losing will mean extreme punishment. Who knew that winning Running Balls would be a frightening thought one day?

EPISODE 248. Broadcast on May 24, 2015.

We find our cast stuffed in a clown car this morning at the end of a double red carpet. Everyone except Kwang-soo that is, who climbs out of limousine. He’ll be our MC this morning, and the others wonder why he’s screaming as if speaking to tens of thousands of people.

However that limousine also holds today’s guests: g.o.d’s Park Joon-hyung aka the original Frozen Man (for his outdated yet hilarious antics), 2PM’s Nichkhun, f(x)’s Amber, Super Junior M’s Henry, and last but not least (as Kwang-soo’s voice can only be heard by dogs now) MIB’s Kangnam.

The remaining six are introduced as one collective group, much to their disappointment. I’m confused about this Home Improvement theme song playing in the background, but it’s enough time to exchange greetings and go down the line for intros.

Everyone congratulates Joon-hyung on his upcoming wedding next month. It takes several self-encouraged takes to convey his happiness, and I love how the show kept all of that in. Henry isn’t very familiar with much of the cast—his relationships can be summarized by the following: Jong-kook, that hyung he sees at the gym, Suk-jin, that ajusshi he doesn’t know, and Ji-hyo, the pretty lady he saw on a plane once.

The cast is happy to have Nichkhun join them today, but note that they’re always in for a tough day ahead whenever he comes to play. Now for the rules of the Extreme Punishment Race: Between six teams of two, the top three teams in each mission will be rewarded while the bottom three will face punishment.

Ranking in the bottom three in every mission will mean their names are entered into a lottery where one (un)lucky pair will undergo the ultimate punishment.

And what the—is that… a bungee jump? The maknae PD had the unfortunate pleasure of experiencing this horror ahead of time, and the others watch as — I kid you not — the clip releases and he freefalls with NO ROPE to a depth fifty meters below him. Holy crap.

Mouths still agape, Gary warns Kwang-soo not to betray any of them today. Henry chooses Jae-suk as a teammate, and when Amber suggests that Henry isn’t as athletic as he appears, she and Henry drop down for an impromptu push-up showdown.

Kangnam picks Jong-kook while Amber chooses Haha, then Nichkhun selects Gary. Suk-jin rejects Joon-hyung, but man… beggars can’t be choosers right now. Suk-jin: “If we team up, our combined ages would be over a hundred!”

The mat-hyungs pair up together in the end, fully prepared to lose today. That leaves Kwang-soo with Ji-hyo.

Everyone has their eyes on avoiding punishment today, and in the car, Kangnam asks if Jong-kook is one of those brawny but no brains type. Dude, you don’t stir the Tiger’s wrath right off the bat.

Jae-suk advises Henry to be careful about his flattery because people could think of him as a brown-noser. Henry insists that everything he’s said is genuine, and then the next set of praise is displayed via caption like a textbook definition of the word.

Kwang-soo and Ji-hyo are first to arrive at their first destination where they’re greeted by two cranes in the sky. Here they’ll be playing a quiz game, and the top three teams will enjoy a gourmet breakfast inside whereas the bottom three will eat outside… six stories up.

If the bottom three teams have a pleasant breakfast outside, they’ll earn one punishment Running Ball. Refusing to eat there, however, will earn them 10 Running Balls. When Suk-jin and Joon-hyun finally arrive, they’re given the TL;DR version before joining the others who are busy coming up with questions for their teammates.

Here comes the twist: all of their questions will be asked to the entire group, and the first person whose call gets through to the staff will get to answer. Answer one of their own questions correctly, they’ll get to choose to hand over a Running Ball (from an initial ten) to any other team. If another team answers one of their questions correctly, that extra ball ends up in their basket.

Henry starts off with the question “If you knock on a Canadian tree, what comes out?” Wow, it took me a full minute there, but does he mean maple syrup? Ji-hyo gets through and answers, “Santa Claus!” Hahaha.

Nichkhun gets through to the new number, and then Kangnam apologizes for calling the wrong number. Nichkhun get it right (maple syrup), adding a ball to Jae-suk and Henry’s pot.

Aww, Kangnam’s misspellings in his question are adorable. The question itself is rather confusing since dolphins don’t lay eggs as mammals, but Suk-jin catches the trick question and answers as much to score the point.

Jong-kook says the foreigners will have trouble guessing his question, but agrees to give Henry his entire fortune if he does. The pressure’s on to have Henry come up with the right answer, but Jae-suk gets through and answers, “Okonomiyaki.” Or in his words: “Economiyaki.”

And when Suk-jin gets through the next time, he too answers, “economiyaki.” Hahaha. But that brings Jong-kook and Kangnam’s count up to 12.

Kwang-soo’s question is specifically about Ji-hyo, which she answers correctly. Immediately the other teams start chanting their names, hoping that they aren’t picked. After placing the ball in Gary’s basket, Kwang-soo tries pretending that he made a mistake. But Gary isn’t having it—if this is how he’s going to play, then so be it. “I’m going for totally real today!”

We skip ahead to Joon-hyung posing the last question with four teams at risk of eating outside. He asks what year g.o.d. debuted. Oh, oh, oh, I know the answer to this! Unfortunately for Suk-jin, someone’s beat him to it: Kwang-soo… who gets it wrong.

Jae-suk gets through the second time, and he knows because he was there when g.o.d. debuted: 1999. As it stands, Ji-hyo and Kwang-soo, Amber and Haha, and Jae-suk and Henry all get to eat inside whereas the rest will be eating on the crane instead.

Once they sit down, Kwang-soo tries to defend his decision, arguing that neither Gary nor Jong-kook ever get to face real punishment. Realizing that he, Haha, and Kwang-soo all rode on that frightening rollercoaster in Taiwan wins Jae-suk over.

Outside, Suk-jin insists he can’t eat on the crane, ten Running Balls what have you. Today’s deluxe menu: cup ramyun. Jae-suk: “That’s a punishment for Jong-kook.” Ha, so true. Slowly but surely, the tables rise to a height of 25 meters where they dig in on triangular kimbaps and ramyun.

The other teams toast over wine(?) inside while the others are left suspended until the gourmet meal comes to a close. Suk-jin calls the group to hurry up and finish their meal already.

Gary is in a terrible mood, so Kwang-soo decides to send a written message to his hyung. Too bad the tinted windows make it near impossible to see the words of love (“Gary hyung, I love you! We’re almost done now…”) which get lost in translation. Gary: “Wow, I can’t even curse him out or anything.”

Joon-hyung tells Suk-jin to stick it out, because the final punishment will be much worse. Deciding to make the most of it, Jong-kook snaps a selfie. Once they’re safe on the ground and one punishment ball heavier, the bottom three teams decide to become allies. They try drawing lots for kicks, and twice Suk-jin and Joon-hyung get the short end of the stick.

Their second and last mission takes place by the Han River where Gary rebuffs Kwang-soo’s attempt to cozy up to him. The top three teams here will travel by a luxurious yacht while the bottom three teams will swim across the river.

Everyone raises their voices—how do the staff expect them to swim across? Joon-hyung: “That would’ve been okay 76 years ago, but not now!” Some of the younger guests seem optimistic about it, but the cast knows all too well how difficult it is getting across the river.

Taek PD says there’s nothing to worry about if they can’t swim because their bodysuits also act as floatation devices. Swimming across in half an hour earns one punishment ball whereas giving up halfway earns ten.

It’s a complete game of chance: one person will throw a dart at a board which corresponds to a number of a shower each team will stand under. The unlucky team who gets wet is eliminated. Haha can’t help but acknowledge that even though that this game is about pure dumb luck, the idea still upsets him.

Amber throws the dart which lands on yellow. Taek PD gives the teams a final chance to switch places, but everyone remains firm…

… and water spritzes out from Nichkhun and Gary’s showerhead. Wow, that really really sucks. Nichkhun is next to determine who will be joining them. It’s red, and it’s Kwang-soo and Ji-hyo. Guess when you pair up the lucky goddess and the unlucky icon, misfortune wins out.

Kwang-soo rallies the crowd to cheer for 2 (Jae-suk and Henry) before realizing that 4 (with Jong-kook) would be a decent outcome too. Jong-kook warns him, “If we have to swim that river together, I’ll make sure that you never cross.”

It falls on yellow and Kwang-soo runs over to pour water over Jae-suk and Henry’s heads. That’s just Kwang-soo pulling their leg, because the true winning losers are Haha and Amber. I can’t help but wonder—is it actually possible to cross the river in half an hour?

Jong-kook commemorates a happy yacht ride with another selfie while the bottom three teams are told that safety divers will be accompanying them. So they should swim at their leisure… for over half an hour.

Amber advises the others to stay on their backs and use their legs to propel backwards. She’s an adept swimmer, but ahead of the pack is Nichkhun. Suk-jin says that kid has it all, to which Joon-hyung agrees with, but right now Nichkhun’s in the water and they’re on this yacht. Truer words.

Jae-suk and Henry are safe from that crazy bungee jumping punishment, and in what seems like a blink of an eye, Nichkhun is already halfway across the river. Amber isn’t that far behind and arrives shortly after with Haha.

Gary, meanwhile, swims back to grab Kwang-soo by the air and drag him across the water. One by one, Gary and the others swim ashore within the thirty-minute time limit. Even Kwang-soo made it in twenty-nine minutes, and he recounts the horrific time spent in the water.

Now it’s the moment of truth: Gary and Nichkhun are the only ones with two punishment balls, but no matter what the probability is, it’s just chance. Kwang-soo walks over to comfort Gary, just because, and now the results are in: it’s Suk-jin and Joon-hyung.

Gary erupts in celebration and embraces Kwang-soo, the animosity behind them. He even plants a giant kiss on Kwang-soo’s cheek. In the midst of the victory dances, Jae-suk offers to treat everyone to dinner tonight.

Nichkhun admits that he was curious about what it’d be like to swim across the Han River. Now he knows it’s super tough, and Jae-suk says he wouldn’t even be saying that if he were facing the final punishment.

One week later, we check in with Suk-jin and Joon-hyung, the latter of whom says he’d like to stay alive to see his mini-mes running around. They freak out during the ascent, having made the terrible mistake of looking down.

Suk-jin asks the instructor how many people have backed out of this activity. When he’s told “1 out of 1000!” Suk-jin counts himself among those few. Another twenty minutes passes until Suk-jin is lowered into position.

That aerial shot is absolutely terrifying, then Suk-jin freefalls into the net. It isn’t until he hits the ground does Suk-jin let out a sigh of relief. When it’s Joon-hyung’s turn, he sends a video message to his loved ones, in case, you know, he doesn’t make it.

Down Joon-hyung goes and he exclaims, “My jaw locked! My nostrils have become parachutes!” What a way to end it for the Century Old Bros.

Thanks for the recap Gummimochi!
I couldn't believe they all managed to swim across the river in less than half hour!
Gary seems really grumpy in this episode. I was sorta hoping Kwang soo would have to do the jump.

I was actually nervous the whole episode thinking that Gary was going to have a mental break down REALLY soon and beat up Kwang Soo or something. I'm glad they got over that. Dunno whether it's scripted, but it sounds like a really family thing to do, isn't it? Fighting and making up?

Gary has severe fear of Heights, and the others know it (and have teased him about it in the past) so Kwangsoo, his friend, putting that ball in his basket and upping the chances of him going up there, yes, i think he was really really , really mad at Kwangsoo. Not scripted...the fact that he CAN get that mad and that Kwang soo tried to make a (genuine) effort to make up does seem to indicate that they really are family.

Totally agree! You're polite to strangers, but with family you can really let them know how you feel.

At the same time, I was so relieved when Gary was deemed safe and the Giraffe and his hyung made up. :)

Everybody in RM except Ji-hyo and Jong-kook are notorious for having fear of heights. Whomever group's basket would Kwang-soo put the ball in would be upset about it and that's how it shoulde be, especially in RM's world. However, Gary's anger and hostility went on far too long that watching him ignore Kwang-soo felt uncomfortable.

Kookie has some fear of heights but he is not as bad as the others.

Had no issue w/ Gary being mad at Kwang-soo - aside from KS deserving it, it was in good fun and entertaining - while genuinely being mad, Gary also probably played it up for TV (like when Ji-hyo starts dishing out the punishment), which is why they were able to make-up so easily at the end.

I'm actually really disappointed in Gary after hearing this. Looks like I'm going to have to pretend there's some amazing, real-life-drama back-story to explain his fear; otherwise, his behavior was unacceptable.

If you're legitimately THAT afraid of heights, to the point where you become bitter and unapproachable, rather than play the fear up for comedy (like ALL the members tend to do) then you don't belong on a variety show. Getting dropped from extreme heights is pretty much a staple, and that shouldn't stop anyone from playing the game fairly, or trying to make it funny. It's not like they let Ji-hyo take a pass from the swimming challenge just because she was tired. Besides, all the members that lost the penalty game and had to ride that crazy rollercoaster were afraid too, but still managed to play it up for laughs. THAT'S what variety is.

Eh, I found Gary's extended peevishness at KS humorous (some of it was played up), just like when Ji-hyo has dished out the punishment to those who have betrayed her.

Huh? For the first time I liked Gary. Gary is the only RM member who couldnt lie or fake anything, that aside, seeing him pissed off for the first time is very cute because usually he's the muscle and he's kind of like the guy they go to when they need to do something hard, (he's not an attention seeker, he's quite very transparent you can tell if he's faking something and that's seldom his image in RM), seeing him afraid and not wanting to do a challenge with conviction is really refreshing for this strong guy <3

0

If it's about fear of height, all running men are suffering from it, especially Haha and Jaesuk. I don't recall Gary being the worst. Just saying.

All I can say, it's a good thing Gary & Nichkhun did not get the final penalty. that would've been too much (they were on the losers' camp since the start of the episode) -- Gary looked like he was ready to bawl any moment LOL!

also, the way JSJ tried to weasel out of that final plunge (cordless bungee jump) while citing various reasons made me laugh.

I really enjoyed this episode. Gary's anger towards Kwang-soo was really funny, though I kinda understood why Giraffe did it, since it's true Gary hardly ever gets penalized. Still, I thought the anger was pretty exaggerated, and hope it was part of a character/feud-thing he was trying out, considering how Ji-ho pointed out several times how he was laughing and smiling. With the Monday Couple thing pretty much over, it would be funny if Gary just started adopting an angry/grumpy persona, where he singles out one member to be angry at each episode. I know it's doubtful, but it'd be funny!

I freakin' loved that episode. It was so amazing and dayum, Running Man's PDS didn't joke about the punishments this time, haha. Am I weird for wanting to try it at least once in my life though ? XD. It must be so frightening but come to think of it, it's a straight free fall so there is no way you will crash on the ground so ... YEAH ? XD

I loved the guests even though there weren't anyone really standing out except maybe for Nichkhun and how badass he looked swimming. Great interactions between the cast members though. Gary and Kwang Soo's bromance at the end <333

I mostly enjoyed this episode! The Gary-Kwangsoo combo is something I always wanted to see because their dynamic is rarely seen in Running Man. In my opinion, I find these two the funniest even though they have completely different style (Kwangsoo has more exaggerated slapstick comedy while Gary is more witty with words.) I hope we can see more of them in the future episodes. It would be nice to see them pair up, just the two of them, to do a mission again.

On the other hand, I do feel like the guests faded out into the background with the punishment theme and luck based games. I was hoping to see some intense activity where everybody gives it all to win.

I beg to differ. Some members such as SJH & KG have looked tired & bored. Whereas LKS & JSJ still enjoy the show so much. KJK is & has been roughly the same. YJS & HH are professionals entertainers so cannot really tell whether their hearts are truly with RM - their bonding may be stronger with Infinity Challenge team.

Last punishment I don't think it is even worth to get excited about it.it lasts for less than 2 sec and no special view while falling just a huge metal structure!!! I prefer that maccau bunge jumping .speed is more time of falling is more. view is great half sea and half land and you can see it completely. Sky diving in ep 200 and taiwan rollercoaster are sth..

That was just a schtick Gary used for a while.

Gary wouldn't have won so many of the major final games if he weren't truly competitive, not to mention a man of "hidden" talents.

Plus, he's one of the wittier members, good for numerous quips.

Watching RM since Day 1 made me realize that Gary's anger was real. Maybe it is because of the gravity of the punishment. I was teary eyed when they made up.

Another touching moment was when Ji Suk Jin said that the punishment was worth it because at least Gary and Gwang Soo are now in good terms.

I love you RM!

I think Gary's despair, depression and anger is quite real. But it's really quite funny because we have not seen this side of him. It's good entertainment because there is a simple narrative and a story that the audience can follow - basically, 2 friends quarrel, then they made up in the end.

There is a nice round up and that's something we have all experienced and can all relate to. And it didn't go overboard and didn't turn nasty. So it's all good.

It made the episode quite entertaining for me. The interactions and banter within the members are what make RM worth watching. Otherwise even with the punishments, there doesn't seem to be enough content. I thought there would be at least 1 more game. The dartboard thing was just lame. Crossing the Han river is an admirable feat but that's not really why I watch Running Man.

Don't know why LKS has to go pull Jihyo's hair in the middle of the river. So annoying. There is a time and place for everything. Glad Gary rescued her.

I feel that Gary's words and hostility towards LKS was overboard in this episode. For me, KG came off as too sensitive to be even regarded as enjoyable. It's not like LKS did his usual "betrayal" because they won fair and square in the game and they answered their own question correctly. Also, LKS offered to exchange spots during the 2nd game but Gary brushed it off and didn't even recognized that LKS would've been the 1st one to do the punishment. It's a good thing they made up at the end since LKS have been trying to since the beginning.

It's so funny how fate is so cruel to KG and LKS, KG having received almost all of the punishments and LKS unable to clear up the whole misunderstanding due to various circumstances. The ending was cute too! After 240+ episode, it's about time we get moments from these two.

I agree with Erick, the mission is kinda wasted especially with a guest such as nickhun whom we know are competitive person, Hide & Seek is probably a good choice for that harsh punishment or any mission that require strength & brain, and not to leave it all to chance.

and i don't like henry and amber attitude, they acting up like a brat which is not even funny especially during the shower mission.

so overall bad episode, but LKS & Gary ending is quite nice :D

as for 249, always hate when each members go to different place, but the middle part to the end is awesome especially with uee as a guest, why do uee lose her weight, i meant her chubby cheek is gone :(, running man should have invited her more often, and team her up with LKS and YJS, i miss the UEE i miss you chant :D

Thought this was far better than the previous 2 eps and one of the funniest eps ever for RM.

The games allowed for the RM members and guests to interact since they were largely together and there wasn't much in the way of running in all different directions on their own.

Plenty of funny quips and esp. the RM gang busting on each other.

Having all the guests be non-native Koreans added an element to the Quiz game.

Btwn the 2 punishments (before the final punishment), would much rather swim across the Han river (which is actually something cool to do and this would be a time to do it w/ all the safety equipment/personnel on hand) than miss would seemed to be a fabulous spread for lunch.

Agree w/ KS that Gary and Kookie tend to miss the major punishments (which is why wanted to see Kookie get the final one - which actually seems like a lot of fun despite having vertigo).

Aside from the quips and banter, this ep was made that much more fun w/ the RM gang and guests either crestfallen or so excited to have missed the punishment, esp. the last one.

The maknae PD having had to experience/demonstrate the free fall totally brought to life the stuff that Kim Soo-hyun's character in "The Producers" is doing.

I have a question which isn't related to this episode but can anyone help?...in Running Man, especially in some of the older episodes, sometimes the members have sung a cute song which seems to be a children's song. They sing and skip around in a circle sometimes changing direction. Usually it's for a game where they have to suddenly stop the song and do something, kind of like a musical chairs idea. I can't make out the words for the verse but the chorus seems to go something like "linga linga linga..." Does anyone know it? (It's not the song by Taeyang ^^)

I was really scared that Gary would go as far as actually fought Kwangsoo. But then the episode might not get aired.
I like it that they're that much close to each other, they don't take their emotions. Instead of being the idolized understanding yet fake hyung, Gary chose to actually be mad. You don't do that to someone you're not close to.

Even though i believe that Gary anger towards Kwang Soo was real, i didn't think that he was gonna go as far as fighting Kwang Soo. Gary is well known for his calm and peaceful manner, he learned martial arts, and he knew how to control his emotion well. Gary willingness to show his real feeling to Kwang Soo also proved how close they are ( so with the rest of member are ).

One thing to learn though, even if this is a variety show, scripted or not, conflict could arise due to fatigue, misunderstanding or even excessive unnecessary acting. Thanks to great chemistry amongst the member, their relationship are always close even after 5 year if filming.

I was touched that LKS kept making efforts to make peace with him and kept checking up on him. Kwang Soo said that Gary was tearing up, I felt really bad. During penalty ball lottery i kept saying "Not Gary, not Gary , please not Gary". I was so relieved that he wasn't picked in the end. I thought he might have bawled or gotten more furious with Kwang Soo. Thanks to JSJ badluck, Gary and LKS made up! Friendship wins! <3
