Six Flying Dragons confirms leads, adds Yoon Kyun-sang

All systems are a go for Six Flying Dragons, the new SBS sageuk that now officially stars Yoo Ah-in (Secret Love Affair) and Kim Myung-min (A New Leaf) in an epic political struggle over the future of the newly founded Joseon nation. There’s going to be a lot of acting in this drama, but I don’t think I’d have it any other way; if political intrigue is the name of the game, you really need two intense leads to anchor it.

The drama from the team behind Tree With Deep Roots tells the story of future King Taejong Yi Bang-won (Yoo Ah-in), and the strife in the early Joseon court over the direction that government would take and the key figures who shape its future. His greatest opponent was Jung Do-jeon (Kim Myung-min), a scholar and politician who aided Yi Bang-won’s father in establishing Joseon. Veteran actor Chun Ho-jin (Bluebird’s House, Doctor Stranger) is also onboard as Yi Seong-gye, Yi Bang-won’s father and the founder of the Joseon dynasty.

Also confirmed for the drama is Baek Jin-hee (Pride and Prejudice) as the heroine and Yoo Ah-in’s love interest. She’s a strong-willed woman who hates to see injustice, which ought to put her in quite the moral quandary when the hero starts killing for ultimate power. She’ll be the younger sister to Byun Yo-han (Ex-Girlfriend Club), who plays a skilled swordsman and Jung Do-jeon’s bodyguard, putting brother and sister in opposing camps. His character is actually a prequel version of Lee Bang-ji (played by Woo Hyun) in Tree With Deep Roots.

Byun Yo-han, Baek Jin-hee, Yoon Kyun-sang

In addition to the confirmed cast, up-and-comer Yoon Kyun-sang (Pinocchio) is being courted to join the drama as Yoo Ah-in’s head bodyguard. He’ll be the prequel version of Jo Jin-woong’s character in Tree, Mu-hyul. He’s a dim-witted boy who grows up dirt-poor and having to take care of his enormous family, but he eventually becomes the greatest swordsman in the land, rising to the head of the royal bodyguard unit that defends the king.

I’m so pleased that Yoon Kyun-sang is breaking out and scoring some big roles — first The Time I’ve Loved You, 7000 Days opposite Ha Ji-won, and now a plum badass bodyguard role, which is almost always the character I end up loving the most in sageuks. I have a feeling that the Byun Yo-han/Yoon Kyun-sang rivalry will be the one that carries me away, and that’ll be just fine by me.

Six Flying Dragons is still casting (Jung Yumi is still reportedly considering a supporting role), and plans to start shooting next month for a September premiere.

Lee Bangji, Mu Hyul, they're not actual historical figures right? It's like the writers are adding on to their Tree with Deep Roots world building! ?

It's going to be a while before I can see Yoon Kyun-sang's name in an article without going 'HYUUUUUUNG!!!!' inside lol.

The cast looks fantastic, I just hope the script isn't some Secret Door-esque bore.

Also, this drama has now landed BOTH my favourite young dark horse actors of 2014 - Byun Yo-han and Yoon Kyun-sang together, that should be epic.

And I love the rest of the cast too, it's like they chose with maximum awesomeness potential in mind.

Highest of hopes for this drama! I've really been wanting to watch a good meaty sageuk so I can't wait for this one to air. I just hope it doesn't turn out like the other one that had plenty of "acting" potential.

YES YES YES! Now if only the writing would be as good as Tree if not better. Kyaaaa it is the perfect time to have an Lee Bang Ji-Moohyul bromance! I love Moohyul to bits and it would be nice to see a background and where he actually came from.

Agree (and likable casts too). One thing- Chun Ho-jin is veteran actor, but can't beat Yoo Dong-keun's Yi Seong-gye who was my THE favorite character in 'Jeong Do-jun'. And how come every single bodyguard in sageuk is so attractive - I can't think of any one I didn't like. Can you? -that reminds me - General Yi's bodyguard (of course fictional char) NalBal (If anyone remembers him in Immortal YSS)- quiet and loyal. I wonder what this actor is doing thesedays....

Such an amazing cast. Hopefully it won't disappoint me like Hwajung. Then September will be a rating battle for best buddies Yoo Ah In and Song Joong Ki.

I trust the team behind Tree because that's my favorite sageuk and til this day, none has come close in terms of writing, directing and acting for me. I had high hopes for Secret Door because of the cast but at the end of the day, it's the writing that matters. And when you have a cast of real actors, this is going to be good. I thought Hwajeong would be my sageuk of the year but Six Flying Dragons is looking mighty good with some dark horse actors that I love. :)

TWDR is the best all-around "traditional" (albeit w/ some elements of the supernatural) sageuk for me as well.

Just wish that Jang Hyuk didn't overact at time and the ending was a bit too makjang.

The best sageuik (including fusion sageuks) would be "Joseon X-Files" (writing, acting, direction, cinematography, etc. - everything superb).

Best fusion for me is Conspiracy in the Court and Joseon X-files. Tree With Deep Roots is up there in my top 5.

Can't take my eyes off Yoo Ah In's photo up there. Such an eye candy. I think I'm gonna give myself a try watching 50 eps as long as he's in it.

Hopefully Jung Yumi confirms this. I adooooooore her too much in MAIDS. Her chemistry with Oh Ji-ho just BANGS the roofs, determined to break your heart with feels and love.

And if Kim Myung-min is in this, he should be FIRST-BILLED no less. I'd love a Kim Myung-min and Jung Yumi pair, huh. Hehehehe. Now that's out of the topic! Hah!

Uri Ensoni Kim Bong-dal is here in dramaland again! I love him so much. Ohhhh I love him so much!

I know I'm late to the party, here, but have just found out that Yoon Kyun Sang will have a good part in this--I have LOVED him since his brilliant turn as Doek Man in Faith/The Great Doctor! Did not even realize he was a detective in Gap Dong, thought he was great as the brother in Pinocchio, and he is now one of my principal reasons for watching Time That I've Loved You. These are all very very different characters. Isn't he a fine actor? Imho, he just disappears into each role and becomes that person, intensely alive! May his career flourish for years to come! I feel very happy about this--so much looking forward to SFD--what a cast! And happy DB will be recapping (I'm assuming & hoping)--looking forward to everyone's comments.
