Beautiful Mind rounds out its supporting cast
Oh Jung-se, Ryu Seung-soo, Yoo Jae-myung
Actors Oh Jung-se (Vampire Detective), Ryu Seung-soo (My Beautiful Bride), and Yoo Jae-myung (Ms. Temper and Nam Jung-ki) have been confirmed for future KBS2 Monday-Tuesday medical mystery drama Beautiful Mind, which is about an unfeeling but highly intellectual neurosurgeon who becomes embroiled in the strange mysterious deaths of his patients. Along the way, he finds love and regains his empathy.
According to a production insider, Oh Jung-se will be playing a character named Kang Hyun-joon, the director of the Hyunseong Hospital Foundation. Kang is a third-generation chaebol with ambitious goals of cultivating his own medical business conglomerate. Ryu Seung-soo will be playing a three-term assemblyman and aspiring presidential candidate named Kim Myung-soo.
On the other hand, Yoo Jae-myung’s role is yet unclear. However, Yoo has proved his versatile acting range from playing the lovable school administrator in tVN’s Answer Me 1988 to his current role as metrosexual makeup-shop-owner-turned-detective in JTBC’s Ms. Temper and Nam Jung-ki. So whatever he ends up playing will be fun to watch.
After a long bout of casting difficulties, Jang Hyuk (Master of Trade—Inn 2015) has been confirmed as the cold genius doctor, with Yoon Hyun-min (My Daughter Geum Sa-wol) playing his villainous counterpart. Park Se-young (My Daughter Geum Sa-wol) and Heo Joon-ho (Moss, Silmido, Jumong) have also been confirmed as supporting characters. This will Heo’s first comeback role in television after nine years of working exclusively in movies. We’re still missing a leading lady, but the offer has been out to Park So-dam (Because It’s the First Time), and hopefully *fingers crossed* she’ll let us know soon.
To be honest, I’m concerned that Beautiful Mind may be on its way to becoming a mess, with the repeated changes in the leading men and the re-postponement of its premiere date. The addition of Oh’s and Kang’s characters suggests that an interplay of hospital politics will be included, on top of the medical mystery that the show was marketed as being. On top of that, we have to look out for the romance that helps the cold neurosurgeon regain his feelings, and it seems like this drama may be trying to catch too many rabbits at once.
This drama plans to premiere on June 20, after the four-part miniseries Baek-hee Returns, which will begin when Neighborhood Lawyer Jo Deul-ho wraps up.
