Bring It On, Ghost: Episode 2

This episode is a bit lighter on the spooky ghost-fighting and a bit heavier on the background of our characters, and knowing more about them only makes me like them that much more. That’s not to say that the ghostly stuff isn’t as intensely creepy as in the first episode, and this time the ghost has a legitimate axe to grind. The school pervert was just a warm-up — Bong-pal and company have their actual lives at stake this time around.

EPISODE 2 RECAP

On his way home, Bong-pal stops to watch some mothers putting their children on a school bus, and it triggers a memory — he’s a child, and he sees his mother waving to him from across the street. But a cloud of black mist appears behind her and shoves her into the path of a moving car, killing her.

At his mother’s funeral, little Bong-pal sees his mother’s ghost, only now she seems malevolent and menacing. His new ability to see ghosts makes young Bong-pal an outcast, as he can’t help but react to their presence and it makes the other children wary of him.

Back in the present, Hyun-ji waits for Bong-pal to come home, because she needs to confirm something. She warns him that she’s not doing this because she wants to, and softly floats over to kiss him again… and he yanks her away by the hair. HA.

She aims at his face again and he pops her in the forehead, then gets on her case for speaking banmal to him. Hyun-ji coyly points out that she died five years ago, making her the older one. Bong-pal sarcastically calls her “noona” and blows her off anyway.

She’s waiting for him at his apartment, and he again tries to dismiss her, but Hyun-ji just pops into his apartment and follows him around as he cleans up after Monk Myung-chul. She’s frankly adorable, making cute faces and getting as close as she can without touching him, but Bong-pal valiantly ignores her.

Eventually she asks Bong-pal again for just this one favor, but he firmly refuses. The Look over there! trick doesn’t work either, nor does her explosion of aegyo, and Bong-pal just wants to know where his payment is for the ghost he fought at the school.

He finally scares her off by pretending the letter from his father is a talisman, but as soon as he leaves the apartment she’s back, and she tails him all the way to school.

Chun-sang and In-rang (whose names I got wrong, saaaawry!) are excited when it turns out they got footage of Bong-pal punching that pervert ghost — the ghost shows up as a white cloud on film. It’s also obvious that Bong-pal could see the ghost, and touch it, though In-rang points out that they saw it, too.

In-rang explains that regular people can see ghosts, when they’re very afraid. He says that a silver cord connects the ghost and the frightened person… but Bong-pal doesn’t see the silver cord, he sees the actual ghost itself. They look him up in the school records, and discover his name.

Bong-pal snarls when he sees the veterinarian, Hye-sung, surrounded by college girls as he walks the small fluffy dog he saved the day before. Hyun-ji says that that’s how a man should be, and suggests that Bong-pal get himself a dog so that he’s not alone all the time.

She sighs when she sees Bong-pal’s lunch, reminding him that ghosts can only eat food prepared specifically for them. She requests a bite, but he does that mean thing where he pretends to be feeding her, only to pop it in his own mouth instead.

Hyun-ji leaps out of the way when Chun-sang nearly sits on her, and the two friends introduce themselves formally (Bong-pal: “So??”). Chun-sang says that they’re brothers now after what they went through together last night, but Bong-pal’s response to forming a team with them is the same as his response to the group project… NOPE.

Bong-pal runs into the vet professor, Hye-sung, again when he turns out to be the new teacher in one of his classes, and HA, half the students are girls just auditing the class. He nicely answers their questions about himself then asks them to leave. Bong-pal is happy to see the pretty girl from the other day is in his class, and learns that her name is IM SEO-YEON (Baek Seo-yi).

Hyun-ji appears in the seat next to Bong-pal and asks if he likes that girl, and he grits through clenched teeth for her to go away. She says she’s got nothing else to do, and Bong-pal draws attention when he sighs that she’s driving him crazy.

The professor singles him out in front of the whole class, still smiling but now coming off a bit passive-aggressive. Bong-pal is embarrassed, but it does earn him a sympathetic smile from Seo-yeon.

Chun-sang is frustrated about their website’s dropping rankings — one particular commenter who goes by the handle “Sadako” keeps leaving ugly comments. Chun-sang and In-rang pretend they aren’t there when the Club Association representative knocks on their door, warning them that they have to vacate the room within a week.

Their only hope is to get Bong-pal to join, because having a real ghost-seer will boost their membership. They decide to hang around him even if he won’t join, just on the off-chance they see some ghosts that way. They get all excited, thinking about how popular they’ll be (think of the girls!)… and then their electricity is cut off. Wah waaaah.

In Bong-pal’s class, Hye-sung asks who his assistant is supposed to be, and when Seo-yeon raises her hand he decides it’s too much work for one person. He asks for a volunteer, so Hyun-ji raises Bong-pal’s hand for him, hee.

Unable to get out of it, Bong-pal is forced to talk to Seo-yeon after class about their new assistant roles. She actually seems to know something about him, and they’re in the same department (economics), though Bong-pal admits he doesn’t go to department events. After she leaves, Hyun-ji can’t help but say I told you so, but Bong-pal just gives her a withering look and leaves.

Seo-yeon finds Hye-sung after class to give him the previous professor’s files, and he says he’ll return them. He’s feeding the little dog, and he tells her that he’s only keeping him until he finds his owner. Hye-sung gets a call that he’s needed elsewhere, and he asks Seo-yeon to watch the little dog a while.

Bong-pal happens by Hyun-ji’s friend Kyung-ja at the bus stop, where she’s still hanging on the man she’s hoping will die soon. Hyun-ji stops to say hello, then hurries on after Bong-pal. Kyung-ja suddenly sees professor Hye-sung catching a cab, and instantly drops her current man and chases after him.

Bong-pal spends some time exercising on his roof, doing his best to ignore Hyun-ji even whens she sits on his back while he’s doing push-ups, ha. She jumps up and down on him, whining for fried chicken, and he ends up chasing her around the rooftop while she laughs.

That night, at a dilapidated old village inn, a drunk man sleeps off a bender. His door opens to reveal a ghostly hand, and a female ghost comes creeping into the room. She breathes black mist at the sleeping man’s face, which wakes him, and he screams.

The village is all aflutter the next morning with the news of the dead man, and Myung-chul overhears some locals talking about how the inn is haunted. The story goes that a young local girl was found dead in the closet of one of the rooms, having been beaten to death, and now people die in that room on an alarmingly regular basis. One of them was even the man who killed the girl.

Myung-chul goes to the inn to find its tenants leaving en masse, and the innkeeper throwing salt all over the place. She’s called him to look in on her problem, and he pretends to be all mysterious, mentioning details about the room and its story as if he didn’t just overhear the whole town talking about it.

He takes out his massive scimitar and brandishes it, but he’s suddenly whisked into the room and he starts screaming. He yells at the innkeeper to call a shaman, then he’s dragged inside, and all we hear is Myung-chul’s shrieks and breaking furniture.

Hye-sung takes the little dog to his clinic, where his female employees seem as enchanted by him as the college students. But once he leaves to prepare for surgery they complain that at the rate he’s bringing in strays, they may as well be an animal shelter.

As Hye-sung changes for surgery, a strange-looking tattoo is revealed on his back. It’s not immediately obvious what it is, but it’s black and and creepy and reminiscent of the black mist that pushed Bong-pal’s mother in front of that car. Hye-sung’s usual cheery expression drops, and his eyes go dark and blank.

Bong-pal does his best to pretend Hyun-ji isn’t there, but she’s persistent and manages to irk him enough to get the occasional rise out of him. He’s heartless against her pleas to share his food though, and finally he put in his earbuds to drown out Hyun-ji’s constant chatter.

As he cooks dinner, Bong-pal tells Hyun-ji to go home, but she sighs that she doesn’t remember her home or even how she died. That seems to illicit some sympathy from Bong-pal, until Hyun-ji turns her gigantic eyes on him deliberately, and he realizes he’s being manipulated.

He warns Hyun-ji about the “famous monk” she’s about to meet when Myung-chul bangs on his door, which successfully gets her to poof to another room. Myung-chul looks stiff and bruised, but he refuses to talk about why he looks so bad. He seems to sense a strange energy, and Bong-pal holds his breath that he might find Hyun-ji… but he’s just after the stew, ha.

Over dinner, spooked by his own close call today, Myung-chul says seriously that Bong-pal needs to stop fighting ghosts. Bong-pal cheerfully asks for a loan then, but when he names the massive amount he still needs, Myung-chul changes the subject. Heh.

Through the window Bong-pal sees Hyun-ji begging for a sausage, and he grudgingly gets up to make more. He says it’s for the stray cat outside, and Myung-chul is all You’re on the fourth floor… Bong-pal actually smiles when Hyun-ji motions for him to make lots, awww.

Seo-yeon recognizes the dog in Hye-sung’s office window, and he sees her looking in the window and asks if she lives nearby. He asks her to keep his clinic’s location a secret from the other students.

That night Hyun-ji sneaks into Bong-pal’s room to watch him sleep, and she sees all of his pictures of his family when his mother was alive. She grumbles that he won’t give her a chance to check her theory that kissing him helps her remember her life, then looks over at his sleeping form as an idea dawns.

She gives herself a pep-talk for courage, then leans in until their lips are almost touching… and a yelp makes her sit up straight. It’s just Myung-chul calling out in his sleep, but the noise wakes Bong-pal and he jumps up when he sees Hyun-ji so close.

He instantly knows what she’s up to and chases her out of his room and around the living room. She wakes Myung-chul again when she steps on his stomach, which Bong-pal blames on the stray cat.

In the morning, a very sore Myung-chul asks Bong-pal what the letter from his father said. Bong-pal admits that he threw it out, not the least bit curious what it said. Myung-chul goes looking for it in the trash, and a neighborhood ajumma accuses him of stealing boxes.

Myung-chul insists that he lives in this building with Bong-pal, but the ajumma yells back that she’s lived here for ten years, and nobody lives in that apartment. Myung-chul keeps looking for the letter while the ajumma nags, and she knocks him over when he accidentally touches her.

Seeing him tumble calms her down and she seems contrite, but they quickly resume their argument. She insists that nobody lives in Bong-pal’s unit, which is really strange. Meanwhile Bong-pal comes out side and looks around, wondering if Hyun-ji really left this time.

She shows up when he gets to class, and he bickers with her, thinking they’re alone in the room. Chun-sang and In-rang are there, hiding and watching, and to them it looks like Bong-pal is talking to nobody.

Bong-pal picks up another couple of stragglers, as Chun-sang and In-rang follows him after class. He takes a new ghostbusting job and warns Hyun-ji not to tag along, though she insists. HAHA, Chun-sang and In-rang get freaked out whenever he yells at Hyun-ji, and the more casual they try to look, the more obvious they get.

It’s not until that night that Myung-chul realizes he dropped his scimitar at the haunted inn. As it turns out, that same inn is Bong-pal’s newest job, and he arrives unknowingly with Chun-sang and In-rang still following. The innkeeper is worried by Bong-pal’s youth, but she’s desperate and he swears he’s different than those other swindlers.

She points him to the room and skedaddles, and he goes in while Hyun-ji gets distracted by something in another part of the building. Chun-sang and In-rang set up their video equipment and start broadcasting, fully prepared to hang on Bong-pal’s coattails whether or not he knows it.

Out behind the inn Hyun-ji finds a cloud of shifting black mist, and wonders what it is. She finds a large dagger in a pile of discarded junk, while inside the haunted room, Bong-pal is yanked into a wardrobe by a ghostly hand. (Not gonna lie, I legitimately screamed.)

He finds himself shut in the dark wardrobe with a female ghost whispering in his ear, “Run away. Run away. Hurry.” He looks at her and sees her end… how she’d been viciously beaten and shoved into the wardrobe to die.

Bong-pal hears a shriek and comes flying out of the wardrobe, to find Hyun-ji being attacked by the real malevolent ghost — the man who killed the girl. He goes after the male ghost, as the female ghost cowers in the wardrobe.

Myung-chul arrives at the inn, here to collect his scimitar, and he hears the sounds of Bong-pal’s struggles with the murderer ghost. All out of bravado, he turns tail and runs.

Bong-pal and the ghost spill out of the room, and Chun-sang and In-rang catch the struggle on film. It looks like Bong-pal is fighting nobody, but they know there must be a ghost, especially when Bong-pal is flung halfway across the courtyard.

Of course, since they can’t see the ghost, their viewers think they just hired an actor to pretend to fight a ghost. Lucky for the boys, the ghost picks up Bong-pal by the throat just then, and they’re able to film him hanging in midair. HAHA, despite that being a fantastic shot, they shut themselves in a closet out of fear.

Hyun-ji makes her way out of the room and sees the ghost pummeling Bong-pal, and she puts her game face on. It’s cute how Hyun-ji and Bong-pal check in with each other to make sure they’re both okay, then round on the murderer ghost as a unit.

They fight together like a well-oiled machine, and in a momentary pause in action, Hyun-ji sees the ghost’s weak spot — the place on his abdomen where he was stabbed to death by a loan shark.

Hyun-ji realizes that the knife she found must be the one that killed him, and she locks the ghost’s arms and yells to Bong-pal to target his side. Bong-pal delivers a solid roundhouse kick to the ghost’s ribs, followed by a hard left hook, and the ghost dissipates in a cloud of black smoke.

Bong-pal and Hyun-ji high-five, but they grow serious when they see the girl’s ghost standing in the room’s doorway. She bows to them gratefully, then gently dissolves into a beautiful white mist. Bong-pal assumes she was held here by her murderer’s ghost, and Hyun-ji cheerfully congratulates him on getting rid of two ghosts today.

Bong-pal looks adorably pleased by Hyun-ji’s approval, but he’s distracted when he finds Myung-chul’s scimitar in the courtyard. They go back to his rooftop, where he asks Hyun-ji how she found the weaknesses of both ghosts they’ve fought together. He eagerly asks her to teach him how to see them, but she sing-songs that she won’t do it.

Bong-pal sighs, then asks why she’s following him anyway… does she like him? Hyun-ji admits that she doesn’t remember anything about her life or how she died, but for the first time in five years she remembered something when they… you know…

So that’s why she’s been trying to do that again, to see if she can remember anything else. Bong-pal has no idea what she’s talking about, and Hyun-ji is too shy to say the word “kiss,” so she tells him to forget it.

Bong-pal is just pulling her leg, and with a chuckle, he swoops down and kisses Hyun-ji. Surprised, her eyes fly open wide.

COMMENTS

I felt like this episode gave us a bit more to sink our teeth into, in terms of characterizations and world-building, reducing the show’s comic-book feel. I actually liked the tone of the first episode, but I find myself enjoying the larger world we’re in now as well, so it’s definitely not a complaint. I’m happy we got to know more about Bong-pal and how his mother died, though I like that the show is parceling out details slowly, giving us a lot to look forward to. I also still love the balance between light semi-cohabitation comedy and the darkly creepy ghost-hunting scenes, and it’s fun how the show can make me laugh and scream all in the same episode. I enjoy that the ghost stories are never what they seem at the beginning — so far, each has had a twist. If this show turns into a ghost-hunting procedural, I’ll be perfectly happy with that as long as each ghost comes with such an interesting story.

I am absolutely charmed by Kim So-hyun in this role — she gets to be sassy and spunky, and I love how she follows Bong-pal around, enjoying how annoyed he is by her presence. I like that she’s not a sad-sack ghost, but still tries to enjoy the things the world has to offer even if she can only observe (not to mention being a pretty kick-ass fighter). I’m sure we’ll have some pretty meaty angst when we start to learn about her past and how she became a ghost in the first place, and luckily we know that Kim So-hyun has the ability to make us feel that sorrow and hurt that I’m sure is coming, right along with her.

I’ll confess to wondering, as I know some viewers do, whether she’s actually a ghost or not. I definitely noticed in the first episode that she’s the only ghost who appears to Bong-pal as a normal human — there’s nothing misty or dark or distorted about her, as all the other ghosts look to some degree. We’ve seen that she was in an accident of some kind, but it’s entirely possible that she’s not dead but simply in a coma somewhere, and that her “unfinished business” is to remember her past before she can wake up. This is all speculation, of course, but the creators of this show are known for their attention to detail, so I feel as though Hyun-ji’s nearly-normal appearance will turn out to have an explanation of some kind.

As for Bong-pal, I find his straight man opposite Hyun-ji’s comedienne to be a wonderful balance — the actors have a great comedic chemistry, and I could frankly watch Bong-pal roll his eyes at Hyun-ji’s silly antics every day and twice on Sundays, though his softening towards her is pretty sweet, too. They’re just adorable together, and I can see how they’ll each temper the other’s personality as they get to know each other. Hyun-ji could definitely use some grounding (not to mention help discovering who she is and why she’s still a ghost), and goodness knows Bong-pal needs to learn to live a little. I love stories where the characters come together from such opposite ends of a spectrum, and I can already tell that I’m going to enjoy seeing these two become friends and teach each other about life (and death).

A cookie to those of you who pegged veterinarian Hye-sung as some sort of evil character — that tattoo and the vacant look in his eyes gave me the straight-up shivers. Kwon Yul is a decent enough second lead actor in the shows I’ve seen him in, but I find him much more compelling here as a blank-eyed enigma. There’s something about his young-looking face that makes me go cold when he takes on that blank expression, because he looks so innocent yet his eyes hold so much malice, and the dissonance of the two is chilling. And I mean that in a good way — I can already feel myself warming to him much more in this role (if by “warming to” you mean “completely freaked out by”) than I did in One More Happy Ending or Let’s Eat 2, where I found his characters lukewarm at best. But as a villain? Please sir, may I have some more.

I’ll admit to being a little confused by some of the ghost lore — I didn’t really understand all the “silver cord” business. But I’m willing to go with the setup that regular people can see ghosts when they’re very scared, but Bong-pal is the only one that can see them with such clarity, and fight them. I’m eager to learn why he can see ghosts in the first place, and how his mother’s mysterious death ties into his unusual ability. I also find it clever how each ghost has a weak point related to how it died, and that the way to banish an evil ghost forever is to attack that weak point. It gives the living Bong-pal an advantage against his otherworldly adversaries, to be able to get rid of them forever, when before he just made staying in their current location so annoying that they left. But now he can actually destroy them, and that gives him a leg up, all thanks to Hyun-ji. It’s fun how her ability to see weaknesses, and his ability to physically banish ghosts fit together so well, and is just another reason I love them so much as a team.

I think they are doing the same thing to the second lead of this drama that they did to oh my ghost. He is probably under possession by the evil spirt. I'm more curious as to whether bongpal is alive. The landlady swears he doesn't live there. That seemed like a pretty important scene. I'm guessing she's still alive but he's not.

*Something* going on there. Maybe they're just beating us over the head with the idea that Bong-Pal is a hermit and needs Hyun-Ji to bring him out of his shell, since he doesn't mix with the neighbors any more than he mixes with schoolmates (?)

I agree, that scene about Bongpal not living in his apartment was quite odd, and I could not figure out if something about the directing of the acting put more emphasis on it than needed to be on it...if that makes sense. The uncle said in that same scene "I told him several times to say hello to his neighbors", implying that maybe the reason the lady did not think he lived there was because of his reclusiveness and not something supernatural. But the scene kind of cut out as the uncle was saying that and his sentence kind of faded out.

If Bong-Pal was not alive, his classmates would react similarly to that lady, I think? As in they would not see him. But who knows, maybe his classmates are also not alive, but they think they are, and maybe living humans are actually the ones who are hard to see (unless you are Bong-Pal), and Rang and Sang are actually hunting living humans but they do not know it and...and this is confusing all my bodily organs.

But yes, odd scene, and again not sure if emphasis was mis-placed (i.e. he is just being his typical reclusive self and there is nothing beyond that going on except us the audience being hyper aware of anything unusual) or if there is something supernatural indeed going on with people not being able to see Bong-Pal.

I was just making a guess, haha based on my avid drama watching nothing is out of the question. I obviously can't say for sure that he's dead, I just thought that it was strange that they put so much focus on that scene. The landlady was adamant that no one lived there. Even if he was a recluse he would still have to pay rent. She would know that someone is paying her to live there.

I am not sure here, if it got lost in translator so someone please correct me - is she the landlady or the neighborhood watch person? I thought she was the second, according the the translations from the video I was watching. If she is the second, then she would not receive rent (i.e. would not be the official landlady of BP's apartment) but would only know BP through neighborhood social gatherings.

you are right she was the second. since Bong Pal is a recluse she probably never seen him before

You might be right. Also, in about 2 scenes, Bong-Pal's uncle complained about how he's never fixed up his place in all the time he's lived there. And if Bong Pal is indeed dead, he could live forever in the Happily Ever After with Hyun-Ji. Hmmm... ?

But if he's not alive, how is it possible for so many other people to see and touch him?

Exactly. For a second I thought the same as everyone else, but Bong Pal is noticed by a lot of people even though he's deliberately trying to fly under the radar. The people who call him as a ghostbuster definitely see him, his classmates not only see him but actively try to connect with him, and the GhostNet guys stalk him. If he's not human, the entire world is going out of its way to treat him like one.

Maybe the ahjumma says no one lives in that unit because it's haunted or something? There's definitely a reason she mentioned it, I just don't think it's because Bong Pal is a ghost.

I caught the same with the landlady, why she mentioned that no one lives in Bong Pal apartment. But if he is actually dead how comes everyone sees him and are able to talk to him? This scene got me confused because writers will not at that dialogue if is not for a reason.

Mean while a love this episode looking forward to next week episodes.

That's what I think too, that he might be a medium of some sort or simply possessed.

First thought on this scene is, oh, Bong Pal is actually a squatter to safe money, hahaha. But I agree with @Bubu that it could be the Ahjumma is the ghost instead, a la Sixth Sense.

I think the Lady might have been dead. Because we know that multiple people can see Bong Pal but only the Monk and Bong Pal saw the lady (President of the Apartment Community group or something not the land lord).

Did anyone answer the question as to why Hyun Ji cracked up laughing at Park Bong Pal's name? Why would it be funny the other way around?

The monk can not *see* ghosts he can only feel their presence or aura.
As in when he thought there was a baby ghost and he threw rice when it was a drunk adult male ghost.

I agree! I'm tremendously enjoying this drama. And shocker or shockers Taecyeon and Kim So-Hyun actually have good chemistry! Lollypip is right. Choosing to focus on the drama and not their age difference really does make a difference!?

And another thing... Two kisses in two episodes! Lmao! Trust TVN to always deliver - although compared to other TVN dramas, they're rather chaste.

Omona! Oh My Ghostess meets Bring It On Ghost in this drama. First it was sous chef Heo Min-Soo. Now there's the shaman. ?

That creepy tattoo Joo Hye Sung has. I hope he doesn't something to do with Kim Hyun Jin's death.

I agree, with him being so socially stunted and her having been a kickass ghost for five years (and his noona!) I stopped being concerned about the age difference. And I like that he's so interested in her so soon!

Taecyeon can show pretty decent acting if the character outline is very, very clear. I think the character in Wonderful Days is the most suitable to him to date. he seemed plausible as an empathic hothead. in this drama, there is still a slight distance imo between the leads, maybe because of the age difference. they´re a bit stiff. but they are doing rather well.

That weird neighbor thing threw me too... if he's a ghost, how come everyone can see him and speak to him?

As for the silver cord thing, I thought it was just the writer hanging a lampshade on why the two ghost hunters could see the bathroom ghost, but no other ghost since... I think the explanation was a victim of awkward subtitle translation, but I understood it as "people can see ghosts when they're being directly terrorized by them, as their mind is operating on the same frequency as the ghost's existence". Who knows though.

Thank you for the recap, LollyPip!

Is the ghost young Bong Pal saw at his mother's funeral really that of his mom? I thought that was the same ghost he saw at the playground, the one he apologised to, calling her ahjumma. Why call the ghost ahjumma if it was mom? Or did I get it wrong?

I'm certainly getting the same vibes as in Oh My Ghostess re Hye Sung's char - outwardly nice char harbouring creepy ghostly secrets!

My enjoyment of the show keeps getting better. Loving Hyun Ji and Bong Pal. Didn't know Taec can be this funny! Ha ha..

Yes, I was under the impression that it could have been the ghost who killed his mom. Like the ghost was trying to steal a child.

But if it is his mom, I guess she could be afraid of him getting hurt like she was (maybe she was a ghost hunter too?) and doesn't want him to interact with a dangerous world?

This ep was a lot of fun and had more fun/cute moments than an entire run of some (so-called) "romcoms."

Kim So-hyun is absolutely winning in this role.

Previously had only seen KSH as the child counterpart so didn't really get to see her display all her talents and she is the real deal (can do serious emotions and comedy adroitly).

KSH is great in showing sass and spunk, but she really wowed me when she was doing aegyo to Bong-pal.

1st of all, it was the right amount of aegyo (actually cute and not cloying like so many other actresses tend to do) - but more importantly, totally got the sense that it was KSH's character acting all aegyo in order to get something from BP (so there was a double layer of acting there).

KSH is doing so great in this role that she may have very well overtaken Park Bo-young in OMG as my fave ghost performance.

Had only seen snips of Taec's acting - but even so, understood the qualms about his acting, but he is doing a pretty decent job here - helped in large part by what the role asks of him.

Knew there had to be a "Let's Eat" connection considering so many LE alums having been cast (Shim Hyung-tak - in a cameo as the 1st professor, who was absolutely hilarious as the love-struck attorney in LE; Lee Do-yeon - who was also hilarious in LE as Hyun-ji's ghost friend and Yul Kwon who was in LE2).

Really interesting to see where the writer takes this as it has a few commonalities with OMG.

If BIOG keeps bringing the fun and scares as it has in the 1st 2 eps, will be deserving of higher ratings than OHYA (which had pretty blah writing and was only saved by SHJ's performance), but probably won't happen as BIOG likely won't be as heavy on the romance.

Speaking of which, don't have that much of an issue w/ the age diff. btwn the leads as long as it is kept relatively chaste.

Not ideal, but if KSH doesn't have a problem doing this role, than don't see why anyone should have a problem w/ an actress deciding what is right for her.

it can still be popular with little romance. Signal was a huge hit and had no kiss scenes from what i heard. then again it was a very well-written/thrilling drama. this drama is taking a bit of a lighter tone, and it's far less raunchy than OMG was.

I agree with everything you said except the last bit because Kim So Hyun is still a minor. It's adults who decide things for her, especially because she's in the entertainment industry. I'm sure plenty of entertainers are nudged into projects by management and it should be scrutinized all the more when it involves a child.

While KSH is a minor, she is 17 which is old enough to get married in most parts of the world, and while not all teens at that age are mature, many are (esp. females).

And as a legal minor, the person(s) who would be making the decisions would be her parents and chances are, they wouldn't let her do anything out of her comfort level.

The beginning scene about Bong-Pal's childhood playing by himself and begging the ahjumma ghost to forgive him when he went outside to play with others really hurt my heart. The fact that as a boy he was so terrorized by the ghosts, enough to push him into being reclusive and to live in fear - that is a terrible childhood. I am surprised he is even as interactive as he is with Hyun Ji. He must carry a lot of scars, and I am interested to see if and how the drama is going to flesh that out. It gives a lot more depth to his character that I was not expecting. A darker, sadder depth.

It must be, right?

Actually, even though it's inconsequential to the plot, I demand a better explanation of what on earth Kwon Yul is doing here.

Is he a guest lecturer running a practicum because he actually has a practice? Or a tenured professor? Of what, specifically? I mean, in undergrad you don't take any classes on medicine, even if you're pre-med, right? If he actually teaches "Veterinary Medicine," it must be a graduate-level course, so he would be a legit professor, right? So why is he subbing in for a core class taken by sophomores in other departments, and TA'd by a senior in another department, totally unrelated to hard sciences in any way (economics)?

It's driving me crazy.

I just assumed he was teaching Biology 100. In Canada, and I believe in the States, you have mandatory science requirements during your undergrad. An Economics major has to take at least one science, and most would take biology rather than chemistry or physics.

It was the same for me, but classes like that were generally taught by a grad student. I guess a couple were taught by actual professors and adjuncts, but for the most part they kept the highly-paid tenure professors for higher-level courses.

In episode 1, Hyun Ji said it was a relief that his name wasn't reversed, so I also assumed there was a funny meaning to Pal Bong. But I couldn't deconstruct that name to find any meaning(although it could be that my Korean was lacking). I just came back from reading the webtoon, and Hyun Ji only mentioned that the pronounciation/ accent of his name was funny, not the reverse of his name like KSH had said:(

It's some kind of biology class taught by a ...vet doctor?! (rolls eyes) Only in Kdrama. Go figure. Must be one of required general education electives. Bong Pal is a second year student so he still takes those.

Let's further not that it's not just one econ major in the class. His sunbae crush is also in the class, and in some sort of TA role at that!

If she has some genuine interest in this area (the class's name is something like Animals & Society, which sounds like a science for jocks class name), then Bong Pal taking this class BECAUSE she would be there would make a lot of sense.

Hi,
although I have been reading dramabeans for years, this is my first time comment. Here are my two cents on this episode

I think it makes sense when Chun-sang and In-rang say that they saw the ghost because they were the ones being tormented. In a later scene, the old man dies when he is tormented by the evil ghost. Because he is tormented by the ghost, he able to see it , therefore Chun-sang and In-rang theory makes sense.

Also, the part with the ahjumma saying no one lives in the apartment also confused me because obviously people can see Bong-pal. I think maybe the ahjumma is a ghost herself because when she pushes the monk, he literally flies back ( also his ghost senses are a little whack sooo...)

0

Required fields are marked *

I have to agree with you about the ahjumma, as I had found it odd as well by the force that the monk fell. That and Bong-pal's expression when he saw the monk arguing with her seemed to fit the bill.

I do have a theory about the ahjumma ghost that tormented BP in his childhood... What if the ghost is related to the ghost that killed his mother?? Just a thought.

As for Hyun Ji, I do think that she is not quite dead. It just seems odd that out of all the ghosts, she is the only one who does not have any appearances of being a ghost at all... even after apparently having been dead for 5 years. You'd think that living in the spirit world would take a toll on her appearance or something.
But I can see this becoming an important story point as Bong-pal spends time with her he will eventually forget that she is not real, particularly since he can interact with her physically and not just verbally.
Yup, I can see him getting attached to her... he already has started :)

Love the show... the house-cleaning bit at the beginning was great, and I'll be waiting for the next episode about as eagerly as Hyun-Ji begging for food. KSH may even be turning in a better performance so far than in School 2015 or Page Turner, but...
...what a difference between different sites and their subtitles. Dramafever says the closet ghost lady was killed by her husband, newasiantv says it was a pimp. So what does the actual Korean say and which version(s) have people been watching? How many other "creative" translations are there that nobody would notice if they don't watch more than one version? And please don't tell me that "pimp" and "husband" are the same word in Korean. Please :)

Not such a huge difference in meaning, but later, when the closet ghost lady smokes out, Dramafever says she must have been trapped there; newasiantv says she was wandering. DF says ghosts can only eat food given to them; NATV says it has to be prepared by humans, but doesn't say prepared for who. DF wins the "makes sense in English" award, but which versions are closer to the Korean?

I think they're saying "that person", which is more likely to be interpreted as husband than anything else. I don't hear the actual word for husband in there, though. Though dramas have taught me the word for "suspect", I don't yet know the one for pimp.

Trapped and wandering are basically the same concept, unable to move on because of unfinished business. As for the food, if it's the same rules as Arang then a ghost can only eat food prepared by a human and offered to the ghost. So they can eat their own memorial feasts and something given to them directly, or food left out for ghosts in general, but can't find or snatch food.

With all the complaints about OTP age mismatches, how come nobody complains about the short skirts on the high school girls' uniforms? Other shows do this too -- School 2015 also had uniform skirts so short they seem pervy to me. Is that really what Korean school uniforms are like? If so, Korea has much worse objectifying-women problems than just casting teen girls with older guys. And if the uniforms aren't like that, at least you have something else to complain about in this show besides an 11-year age gap.

(FWIW, I'm not complaining about the age gap -- KSH is so fun to watch I'd tune in no matter who they pair her with. Or what. Or how long the skirts are. Just as long as they don't hide that expressive face.)

And what's with the ties in girl's uniforms? Don't they know ties are phallic symbols?

The students wear short skirts?! Heh. You should've seen other school dramas' female teachers' skirts that are even shorter. If not in skirts, teachers are in very tight leggings and very short tops. Not that I want them all to dress like the female lead in Lucky Romance or something.
Nothing wrong with students' skirts being on a shorter side. I was admonished a lot by the principal for my school uniform being too ... tailored. So what? Never changed it. Never bothered me.

Loving the dynamic between the OTP, so cute with the bickering. Totally got the feeling that Bong Pal is secretly enjoying being nagged by Hyun Ji, caught his almost smile a lot of times! And who can resist those big big eyes, really.
The big question for me is where is Dad and what's going on between him and Bong Pal? Isn't he supposed to be an exorcist himself? Can't believe he just left little Bong Pal alone with all the ghostly vision. The only explanation acceptable would be if he is trapped in some ghostly realm or something...
Am loving all the comedic supports, Sang-Rang duo is comically right, and the Monk too. For some reason it cracked me up so bad when he start meowing for the stray cat :D

My impression was that Bong-pal is creating the distance between him and his dad, what with the letters. I'm beginning to have a theory about it, actually, involving the way his mother died. If it's what I'm thinking, it's actually pretty original. I mean, relatively.

It isn't a fully formed theory, not really based on anything concrete, just supposition based on the way people are acting. So it could be totally out of left field.

I'm not sure if the ghost he kept seeing was the same ghost, and the same one that killed his mom (if the ghost IS his mom, my theory is shot), but I wondered why a ghost would kill his mother, and also why he would be staying away from his dad when the dad wants to see him and we know the dad didn't kill the mom and really did like her (he ran to save her when she was hit by the car). Then I wondered if they were the same.

So then, if they are the same reason, maybe the ghost is in love with his dad, and wanted to get rid of his family? Either in the way that the unni ghost is in love with people, or maybe even it was the dad's first wife. So she killed Bong-pal's mom, and until he can unsee ghosts, he's staying away from his dad.

With only two episodes it's only a baby theory.

Required fields are marked *

I was wondering about Hyun-ji's appearance as well, whether it was just a matter of identifying with her more or an actual plot device, but then when Bong-pal was in the closet with the poor lady in this episode, she LOST her spooky coloring that she'd had earlier, when she came out to whisper (presumably a warning) at that drunk guy on the floor.

So maybe it has some other purpose? Maybe it's ghosts that are kept back not through any fault of their own, but by the actions of someone else? Or like the unni ghost said, because they were wrongfully killed?

Ghost love stories always end up with the ghost actually in a coma. I'd like to see some other resolution, even if it had to be forced to make sense. Like Arang and the Magistrate, something new and interesting, but a bit better than just next lives.

(Also, it may just be the Dramafever translation, but they interpreted it as "silver code," which doesn't make any more sense than silver cord, but my impression was that it was a paranormal nerd term just for normal people being able to see ghosts when they're terrified.)

0

Required fields are marked *

It's common in stories where people leave their bodies -- that their spirit is attached to their body by a silver cord. It can stretch really far and is very strong. However, if the cord is severed, the spirit can't come back to the body and the person dies. By the same token, the spirit uses the silver cord to return to their body. I'm assuming that the writers in this drama are using some variation on this theory in regards to the ability to see ghosts.

I am loving this show!!

Taecyeon and Kim So Hyun make such a great pair and their chemistry is off the charts! I was originally worried a bit about Taecyeon too, but so far his comedic timing with Kim So Hyun has been perfect. They suit each other really well.

I also wonder if the second lead girl is going to serve a greater purpose later on than just the pretty girl. Will she end up having problems with Hye Sung's strange dark side later on or something?

0

Required fields are marked *

Let me take a guess... Hye Sung is possessed by an evil spirit (hence the black tattoo on his back) and he killed(?) Hyun Ji in a hit and run type of accident. But my theory is so unoriginal, so I doubt it would be the case.

And in my opinion, Bong pal's mother may not have been purposely pushed onto the road, but rather the evil spirit was trying to posses her but didn't succeed and the force consequently the flung her forward. (If possession was possible in this drama)

I somehow feel that the vet (hye sung?) is able to see ghosts but has perfected the art of ignoring them to go on with his life, and that the incident behind the scar is the reason he can see them. When he looked to the side on his own in his room (the famous blank stare) it was as though he was looking at something (or someone?) that was there.
Even while taking class he reiterated the number of students present, as though driving home the point in the face of the ghost (KSH) additionally present in the class. Additionally he called out to Taecyeon when he was arguing with her.
In any case a second lead who cannot see the main girl won't make sense, so I feel that's where they're going with the vet, and not with another copy of the Oh my ghostess plot.

ok, plenty of mysteries to mull over and speculate and it's only ep 2! (rubbing hands in glee...)

1. the shaman from OMG (I love you ajjumma - you marshmallow hearted half baked shamaness !!) insisting that no one lives in unit 104 - (creepy.... is Bong Pal dead ? or dead but can only be seen by some and not others? think likely dead since most seers cannot touch the ghost even if they can see them)

2. why was the shaman so strong that she could send Mong Myung Chul flying with one shove?

3. why did Mr Perfect (read : creepy) Vet/Professor/self professed animal lover) save the puppy? He's human as far as I can tell, since he got scratched and was bleeding from the puppy rescue operation.

4. why did Mr Perfect tell the sophomore to keep his clinic a secret? what nefarious activities does he carry out after dark when he dons his surgical gloves?

5. what's that strange shifting tattoo on his back ? is he possessed - I really think so....

6. who is the ahjumma ghost who terrorizes poor kid Bong Pal? it doesn't look much like his mother tho'. just a random ghost to illustrate how Bong Pal started seeing and being terrorized by his ghost seeing gift?

7. what happened between Bong Pal and his dad? why are they estranged?

8. the obvious mystery of how Hyun Hi died and why she has a "grudge" - no, I really dun think its a virgin grudge...

9. and more importantly, can JB or someone who is well versed in Korean explain to us what's the joke behind Park Bong Pal's name - spelt backwards? Pal Bong Park? dying of curiosity already!

thanks for recapping this series , Team JB!

Thanks for the recap, LP!

Ep. 2 is even better! Poor little BP... I can't imagine how scared he must have been to witness that dark cloud thrusting his mom into the street to be killed and subsequently seeing ghosts... To possess that ability from such a young age and choosing to be a recluse growing up must have been so lonely and hard on him. =( Maybe this is partly related to his estrangement with his dad if somehow his dad had a difficult time coping with losing his wife and raising a ghost-seeing son...

BP-HJ being a ghost-fighting pair is perfect! They can beat them up, help each other out, and target the weak spots! It's also interesting to see that the malevolent ghosts are the ones that need to be exorcised, which would in turn help send the remaining kind ghosts into a peaceful afterworld if the situation was resolved.

Sang-Rang continue to be a funny duo with their live streaming. LOLed when it got too scary that they closed the door instead of worrying about getting good footage. Also, I think it was Sang explaining about the silver cord and not Rang.

The apartment head lady's comment about unit 402 being vacant is so odd. I did think like some of you guys... Could BP be dead? But then it doesn't make sense if everyone else can see and interact with him. Plus, this would be too much of a giveaway early on, right? So, I'll just take it that BP is not social and wouldn't attend any community events.

HS's strange back tattoo or marking is definitely an indication of being evil. I'm just scared what happens to those animals that he works with.

The monk is funny... He somehow lost his ability to see and battle ghosts... Makes me wonder if somehow what he was able to do got transferred to BP when whatever happened went wrong.

BP-HJ moments are great. Loved how she was just chilling in his back while he worked out. And all the aegyo for some grilled sausages. XD BP pretending to be dumb about the kiss... Heehee... I really want to know what happened to HJ and have BP help her recover her memories. There's a high probability that HS has something to do with it since we've gotten a glimpse of his ominous side.
