Drama viewership ratings for the week of July 4-10, 2016

To say that Doctors is doing well would be an understatement at this point, as it continues to climb steadily upward in the ratings, reaching just shy of 20% this week. It’s only a matter of time before it breaks that important milestone, so good luck to the rest of its competition. Well, mostly to Beautiful Mind, which could really use it.

One of the new premieres this week, the pre-produced and much anticipated Uncontrollably Fond, got off to a strong start at 12.5%, and held it for its second episode. Next week will be the real tell, but there’s a good chance it might blow Wanted and Lucky Romance out of the water at this rate.

The Good Wife, tvN’s new drama remake of the American show, premiered to a very strong 4.0% over on the weekend. It dropped a bit for its Saturday episode, but that seems true of all the cable shows airing in general—well, all except for Police Unit 38, which actually rose in ratings to reach 4.1% with its Saturday episode. Considering this is OCN’s big foray into the Friday-Saturday cable market, it’s doing pretty darn well for itself. Pretty darn well indeed.

My husband and I caught some of The Good Wife the other day and we were...underwhelmed, to say the least. On the one hand, it seems to be trying too hard to be great. On the other hand, it seems like they put the bare minimum of effort into it and just hoped to ride on the coattails of the original.

Meh. Maybe it'll find its own voice and get better?

i agree with this . like, i have never watched the original version so im judging this purely on the production itself but i was quite disappointed with what i saw. i felt like i was expecting something much more of a higher standard, something more along the lines of HTGAWM? idk, with the hype given, i was expecting something more smarter, more tightly packed yet it was kinda boring and mediocre at the best.

Thank you. I thought I was the only one, and didn't want to be negative about a drama, trying to do something different. But it was BOORRRRRRRRRRRRRRINNNNNNNNNNGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG!!! LOL. I actually found myself dosing off while watching. The drama has all the right ingredients, but somehow we are left with an underwhelming dish. I think this drama will have a hard time creating the right mood, because the cases and court scenes won't have the same gravitas as the US version.

For one ROK, doesn't use a jury system, so the cases are going to be presented to sway the Judges, who are already in the know about the law, so all the tricks and manipulations that captivate audiences in the original will not transfer here.

I was also underwhelmed by the lead female actress' acting *shocker* everyone thought Nana would be the problem, but she was decent in her parts, while the lead actress, was wooden and did not sell the emotion of a woman fighting to find herself again. The manner in which she speaks, sounds like she is reading the news.

I should add that this is based on the first episode, so maybe the later episodes will pick up. For some reason, the drama picture seems unfocused and not clear (even at 720p HD), the drama is also too silent, many scenes have no background sounds, just talking. All that could be what people are picking up and not liking about the drama.

I don't understand the hype for Doctors. So she's bad-ass in everything except the kissing department. Nothing compelling about it and Beautiful Mind is a lot more interesting. Considering the age gap for the main leads of these two shows, the somethin somethin is a bit more convincing in Beautiful Mind. Park So Dam is even younger than PSH but if her character would slowly but surely empathize with Jang Hyuk's character it's plausible, to think that he is devoid of emotions. But not devoid of charms, for sure. No need to suddenly break out for a song and dance number in the rain to the tune of "there she goes" then declare that he's going to give the girl an act or a gift from a man to a woman - an awkward kiss! Eeep!
Lucky Romance is a gem! That's one kdrama that I would watch again from start to finish. Now I truly understand Hwang Jung Eum's aesthetics in acting. She jells really well with quirky leading men. From No Min Woo in Full House 2, to Ji Sung in KMHM, Si Won in She was Pretty (it was never Park Seo Joon in that drama, I love him but his character was so bland, Si won was just so 3-D!) and Ryu Jun Yeol in Lucky Romance.
Yes, that amazing tiger Ryu Jun Yeol!

In Lucky Romance, the 2nd lead is not even a contender, he was just there as a filler. Lee Soo Hyuk will forever be Mukadil. The only time that I wanted him for the female lead was in King Of High School, coz I want Seo In Guk for myself, haha.

I'm heppy for Police Unit and even Doctors. :DDD Basically, I'm just happy when shows get higher ratings because it means kdramas are not dying anytime soon.

Any rumors about the cast? Did they make a ratings bet like a hug event or something?

I hope so. Although it is quite tough since the competitors are no jokes. If it doesn't show a great premise of ratings, I just hope that more people are tuned in and SKL gets positive reviews. The plotline is cliche but people already anticipate it because of uri Seo In Guk. Hope it meets the expectation.

Bad Guys 4.1% and it looks like Ma Dong-Seok will beat his old drama in ratings with Unit 38. Hopefully it will set a new record for OCN.
Han Jung-Hoon although a baby writer for OCN is doing rather well with every project.

I believe Season 1 of Vampire Prosecutor by the same writer was the highest at 4.3%.

I don't feel her character is adding much and she personally doesn't have a ton of charisma. As someone suggested last week, Jang Nara's performance in I Remember You as an atagonistic cop who comes around to realize the hero isn't a murderer would have been basically perfect here.

Definitely agreed! I started watching BM since I kept reading about how it's better than Doctors, but to be honest...I stopped watching after episode 4. There's just something about how it's being executed that is making my head hurt. It doesn't flow very well and the lead female's actions are just frustrating to me. It's hard for me to drop this drama when I LOVE psychological thrillers (Love the Mentalist and American crime/thrillers shows) and shows like I Remember You (this deserved much higher ratings, SIG, JN, and PBG slayed in this drama). But at this time, I'm just enjoying 38TF, Doctors, TFIP, BGS, and other shows so much more...
Might give it a 2nd chance once it's fully aired, but not worth waiting week after week for it. ;/

She seemed better in ep 5 - I just watched it 99% raw and I had a good impression of her.

I have a suspicion about this show, considering it was originally called Dr. Frankenstein. What if their experimental stem cell treatment gets used on his brain to regrow the damaged area so he can feel emotions and empathy? And what if it's like Flowers for Algernon and only temporary. Now that would be a gut punch of a drama.

0

Might have something to do with her schedule, since she's also starring as main lead in conderella and the 4 knights. But i think her story is yet to unfold, since it seems geting better and better from ep.5. My fave is ep.7 though, as the intertwining relationships becomes more apparent, and her role in the drama becomes clearer (before, she's just this energetic clueless policewoman to me.)

Give it another try!

0

She may seem reckless initially but definitely not useless. And you will see her change from ep 5 onwards. Don't be swayed by what others said, give it a chance and judge for yourself.

I think in this case, the casting is the problem. People don't like the cast, and people might have Jang Hyuk exhaustion. Even though he is playing a different type of character, people have pigeon holed his performances, and that kind of over the top acting is not for everyone.

The female lead character is also not a fan favorite. Add that to the old school, cheesy, feel good romance of Doctors, and the rest is ratings history.

Every country has its underrated TV shows that are good but don't get good ratings. It happens!! International viewers like act like Korean viewers are not so smart or discerning when THEY are the reasons Korean TV stations are either encouraged or pushed to produce good quality dramas. Most of the time, no matter the genre, deserving shows get good ratings and/or attention.

I don't think people are grumbling because Doctors is doing well just can't understand why such a show like Beautiful Mind which is good in it's own right is not gaining more viewership. To me the two are different, the story line of a doctor purportedly with out feelings and how he operates within a profession which purports to have empathy for patients is fascinating.

While both are about uncovering secrets Beautiful Mind is more of a character and social study of what humanity really/empathy means and how those who have feelings maybe more unfeeling than a man who some say has no feelings or is unable to feel. Really makes you think and entertains also.

I personally think both are good shows and people shouldn't bring down one to make the other better.
And if anything the reason Doctors is doing well because it's lighter and provides more fun where BM is a bit too heavy after a long day at work...
But most people don't even consider those.

Seems like one is a soap just set in the medical field whereas the other is more of an actual medical show.

A lot of viewers like soaps.

I don't see why people keep comparing Doctors and DOTS when they are 2 very different productions.

No one expected Doctors to do well. It filmed late, has not big budget and no popular male leads. Not many i-fans knew KRW. It wasn't target china with the Preproduction either.

The only things they have is common are romance ( but more kdrama have romance), female leads play doctors and male leads are direct and flirty

0

KRW is pretty well known actor in Korea, plus his last drama Punch was a success for him. I-fans especially the teens may not knowing him, but he had few popular projects in the past like Love Story in Harvard, My Little Bride.

0

@Gerry JS is more like a cameo to promote for his upcoming drama. He appeared 10 min in 3 episodes...

@Sera The Ms Temper KRW is known for good actor but he doesn't have fanbase. SBS mainly used PSH to promote Doctors in the beginning. I'm sure ifan know and love JH more than him... JH might have had more fans too for how often he is working...

I just don't get the comparison for DOTS productions when they are day and night different. Maybe people need to find excuses to put down a drama that they don't like?

0

The secondary love story was my favorite, but it was the eye candy for me, the two guys has swagger love it, it was popular because people still love a romance with great mood music, it moves our romantic hearts.

Don't know about Doctors since did not watch it yet but Descendant of the sun is quiet good for me. Agree the story was average but the casts made up for it. So many aspects could made the high ratings for a drama, I don't think the cast visual aspect is only factor that high ratings in DOTS but IT was overall good drama too...otherwise it is imposible to gain crazy high ratings like they earned. Even the stunning KIm woo bin and suzy are not able to do that yet...so it is not about the looks or popularity only.

Koreans have no problem understand the kiss is supposed to be awkward since she still had her guard on and never accept his confession.
Her character couldn't breath when Jihong hugged her yet only international fans complain about her kissing since they live in their own fantasy through the drama, not actually watching the drama

0
3

Required fields are marked *

I think it's more because the shocked-into-motionlessness kissing thing is completely alien to non-Korean viewers. Completely. We don't have any parallels for that in our private or public lives. It strikes us as bizarre.

If someone kisses you, you're usually either so shocked you pull back or you join in. I've not watched a ton of other non-Western media but this fishface wide-eyed frozen thing is new to me. I've never experienced it personally and it's not shorthand for anything in the non-Kdramas I watch.

If you were to do a breakdown of end-scenes involving kissing in kdramas versus western dramas, I'd bet you'd find a pretty consistent pattern and it would be this: in kdramas, the scene closes on two individuals kissing without knowing how the woman is reacting to the kiss. In western dramas, there's a beat where either the characters pull apart and look at each other, or the woman has made a proactive move to confirm or deny the kiss. It's very unusual for a western show to end an episode with absolutely no feedback from the kissee.

I'm sure there's an academic paper in there somewhere about cultural expectations of female romantic behavior and how that's reflected in cliffhangers in drama, but for now it's worth stating that the international viewers aren't projecting fantasy fulfillment. They're genuinely bewildered at what is a completely inexplicable kiss scene for them.

0

Required fields are marked *

High five! Totally agree. I don't think it has anything to do with fantasy fulfillment in this case. It just looks awkward. Plus some people like that he is coming on strong, but I don't.

0

Nicely put! I too think it is just the non-response, arms hanging down neither reciprocating nor rejecting reaction that confuses the i-audience. In its defence though, I have seen Jdoramas kissing scenes in exactly the same format. Of course there are the great kisses (yoon eun hye in coffee prince is the one that popped into my mind among others), but yeah most of the time, its more bewilderment than projecting any fantasy...

0

I didn't get why she's so hot at first neither. But then I think the reasons might be most Korean 20s 30s growing up watching her movies/dramas and she maintains good image and constant appearance.
Actually, I only officially fell for her earlier this week after watching 3 meals a day. Sigh... how can she be such a good cook! She is capable of doing many good/complicated dishes and many household chores. She genuinely looks friendly and caring towards others. And I have such soft spot for K-biz girls who laugh out loud when sth funny happens instead of trying to smile in femine and gentle ways while doing tasks on variety show. Maybe this is also why Korean likes her lots.

Plus she took a lot of time off between roles to focus on her college education. A lot of k-celebs get flack for getting accepted to colleges due to their fame. They also get written off as "ghost students" because they barely attend their classes. So PSH's dedication to being a student is another reason why she's adored. I think she also gets praise because some people think actors have more status and look down on idols, but PSH's been very open about her friendshhip with certain idols and has been very supportive of them.

Sad fact, PSH is the only actress in 20s who is really really famous in Korea. Why I said sad, not because she is not good, but there are plenty of actresses in 20s still hard to find their place in the industry when they are really talented. PSH even with the competition with idols still has a huge popularity, this what differs her from other actresses in her age. If I'm not mistaken she is one of the highest paid actressess in Korea.

With her huge popularity, you cannot so free to express your opinion about her acting, Some of her obsess fans will definitely bashing you back. lol.

1. PSH might not be the best actress but she does her job well and provide high profit. The actresses that you think much better than her can't and barely ever carry a drama successful like her.

2. She isn't the highest paid actress in Korea. Her pay is pretty low compared to her popularity but I'm sure it will go up after Doctors

3. You can express your expression without bashing her. Her fans don't care. To me she isn't the best actress but does she deserve the hate and bashing she get from here? NO! People think it's normal to bash actresses here because it's their opinions and they have better "taste" is just ridiculous

She's not the only popular actress in her 20s. Park Bo Young is very popular it's just that she made her name as movie star with 'Speedy Scandal'and stopped doing dramas. 'Oh My Ghostess' was the first drama she did in 7 years. Also interesting is she's the same age as PSH born less than a week apart.

Agreed but I do feel bad for the cast and crew in these kind of situations. I just hope they are encouraged by the fact they are making a good show. I mostly get worried that the network will step in and intervene by forcing the writer to (drastically) change the script or will just cut episodes short.

Jang Hyuk is a fairly prominent actor and is also doing a great job so I'm hoping neither of those things happen.

Rating wise drama series will always get more attention.
Surely netizens comments for the drama or actor/actress also important for the rating outcome.
If netizens love it, they will blessed with the ratings.
Actor/Actress get more bucks for earning, an awards, and ads/commercial line up for daily routine jobs.
And PD or writer also will remarkable for their next job.
Thats how the crcyle in Korea entertainment.
Like it or not, that the truth!

I think it's because her character was annoyingly stupid in some earlier episodes (I think worst was episode 4?), to the point where I wanted to throw something at her or slap her to regain her common sense.
Fortunately her character has improved greatly and I'm totally warming up to her. So to give BM a fair chance, you must watch till episode 6 before deciding if you will continue or not.

The scene that made me start to change my mind about Jin-sung was when Young-oh caught her from falling in that house, and they actually had a quiet moment together. And of course I totally loved it when she defended him in the police station, and came to his rescue at the end of ep 6.

I am watching for jang hyuk and park Seyoung- she is so naturally pretty and her acting is good. YHM also another good actor and he is cute

I love doctors ans uncontrollably fond haha my taste is similar to koreans... I dunno. I watch BM too but yes, it's not as great as signal but it's pretty goos except the female lead.. But later she will change for goos, hopefully.

Im curious about W.
Basically i watch a drama with a good female character. I will never bash handsome actors hahaha so i wont have problem with male leads lols
Please give han hyo joo a good character!!!!

I dropped SIG's drama but i think i should give it a try one more time... The rating tho!!!!

In history of OCN, this show had the best ratings of 4.7% in ep 8.

I am kinda confused about the rating of ep.8. Some korean articles mentioned that it reached the average of 4.7% but in the above report, it is written 4.1%. So which one is correct? or both are correct based on different base?

Required fields are marked *

You are right. They're both correct on different base. 4.1% is AGB, a more widely accepted standard. The other one I'm not really sure of the source, but it only counts cable dramas. Either way, it's done a good job in rating, I hope the show could keep this good trend.

so happy to see doctors continue to get high ratings. I hate how people have to bring down one series to compliment the other. there's always one comment on an article about beautiful mind talking about how the commenter doesn't understand why doctors is doing so well compared to this masterpiece. it happened when DOTS and CBM were airing too. I enjoyed both of the dramas so it was sad to see people always pitting them against each other. I'm not watching BM but I hope the ratings increase just so the comments go away lmao

Police Unit 38 is so so good! I found myself grinning like a fool almost all throughout watching episode 8 while also getting just as frustrated and upset as the main characters were during the sad parts. This show just keeps getting better and better. SO happy for the ratings and hope they continue to rise, it definitely deserves it! I'm glad DB is recapping it. It reminds me of Signal in that it deals with exposing corruption and classism among officials in power, although the tone is very different. I LOVE it. Add to that the Ocean's 11 vibe and it's a winning combination. Here's hoping the writing and plot continue to be written well, although those on here who've seen Bad Guys have much praise for it so I have hope it'll stay good to the very end. ❤ it!

the humor is a natural thing, because addiction to money makes people look ridiculous without any help from others. just turn it up a notch and you get a total absurdity. but it is mixed with such seriousness, sincerity and on the other hand written like an adventure novel.

Me thinks Doctors deserves its hype. Sometimes everyone just wants to have a coherent and lighthearted romance to (pffft) believe in love again. As straightforward as the story is, it still has more substance than DOTS.

0

Required fields are marked *

Yes! Agree with you about this. Definitely so far at least, I think Doctors has a better plot than DOTS.

Someone commented elsewhere that watching BGS reminded her of what it felt like to fall in love, without all the sexuality. I think that's part of the appeal of kdramas to me. That simple yet complicated feeling of having a crush, falling in love, and the angst that comes with it. Doctors also has that, but with a bit more plot, so like you I can understand why there is hype.

Required fields are marked *

I checked out most of these dramas and only stayed for UF because I like the 4 leads.

Beautiful Mind is a good show but it's too much plot with too little action, there is a lack of suspense or build up to a payoff. In this kind of show it's important to be. I think it's better as a marathon kinda show.

Doctor's is actually really easy to watch, it's not doing too much and doesn't pretend to be more than what it is. Kim Rae Won is very likable. Even Park Shin Hye managed to do more than her usual role. I think this is a step up for her in my books. However, I can't get into their relationship so I can't stick with it. They seem so unmatched. It is likely due to myself having just watched Kim Rae Won in Life is Beautiful with Ha Ji Won and they fit so well that I find his coupling with PSH hard to swallow.

I can feel the sparks of chemistry in their eyes n gestures. Love Doctors

sorry if you're a PSH fan, i myself do not dislike her OR like her. she's one of those actresses where i'll watch if i like her male leads enough but i won't watch a drama just for her. but i don't find her dislikeable like i do some other actresses, that's for sure.

anyway, i think she matches younger actors like KSH, LMH, & PSJ to name a few

She actually has better chemistry with older actors. Kim Rae won with Doctors as an example. Many peoples here doubted them including GD and JB but look how it turns out?

I don't want her to act with SJK because of his baby face. I like more mature men for her. But with their popularity I won't be surprised people will try to pair them up some time in the future.

If you don't like her skip it. Simple!

There is limited audience and you have to steal viewers from other channels and shows.

Doctors did that and Beautiful Mind took the fall. Channel needed to be more careful. Either start the show 2 weeks earlier or later than Big Network's same theme show.

Tropes

Either engaging tropes coupled with decent to great acting or a drama that is great on all fronts like Misaeng, Signal, etc

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

Nah. It's just my two cents based on the word 'formula':

Tropes are used in a formulaic way to generate ratings success. I think it's because tropes are story elements people can either relate to or aspire to.

However they also have to be delivered in a way that's engaging to the audience. Deb's right on that.

Thank you! I kind of get it but still, not totally.

I am also trying to understand why I tend not to like shows which are hits except cable hits like Misaeng and Signal.

I tried but could not get into Dots and Doctors. I can't even say the story is bad or anything since I watched too few episodes. I got turned off by the the male lead characters in these dramas but clearly, most people love them.

Those ratings made me think that if Signal was aired on one of the big three it would be a flop, dramas like BM and Wanted should be aired on cables, then it might gain some recognition for its unique content

I think it was a strong start for #UncontrollablyFond especially with their competitors only having single-digit ratings.
And I think KBS is quite happy with the result because "before-and-after DOTS" their weekday night dramas were mostly flop, UF gaining first place on that timeslot again is quite a success.

Anyway, it's just their first week. Mostly hit dramas mostly gained more numbers in their second week. It's a "make-or-break" for them next week. They must gain more ratings and viewer attention before W and Jealousy Incarnate started.

So happy for Seo In Guk Squad 38 drama, hope it will increase even more,he is stellar in there!!!He for sure has more luck with cable shows than the national BIG 3 in terms of ratings...also happy for Doctors, love the show a lot... I knwo many didn't like Uncontrollably Fond but again a minority i loved the pace(it is a 20 ep drama),the mood and even the acting from the premiere week, admit i didn't think they would get such awesome ratings from the start,we all know the star power of Suzy but it's no mistery knet hate her acting...Not everyone's cup of the and it's fine...Can't say i'm a big fan of the writer's past shows as they are gloomy, melo and sad but for this one i'll tune indeed, even if i was debating till some weeks ago if i would watch it or not,the story is suprisingly not hard to understand and i'm curious how will it do in the long run in terms of ratings

Happy for Uncontrollably Fond's performance on its first week. I understand how people don't like the pacing. It must have something to do with the edit. But the drama is actually good. Episode 2 is such a good one. Better than the pilot. I hope they get higher ratings next week once we see how No Eul and Shin Joon Young will fall in love and then we find out the events that will lead to them breaking up.
Also, I heard the advertising load has been successful too. Good job to all the cast and crew of UF!

I like doctors a lot but not in love with it yet. I think it deserves it high ratings cause it's very watchable and has elements that the General Korean public can enjoy. PSH although not one of my favorite actresses, is a great Korean celeb as many have mentioned and I like her personality even if I haven't always loved the characters she's played. So far I like the character here so I hope it stays that way. KRW - excellent, I have liked him since LSAH, MLP and LIttle bride is one of my faves. But in recent years, he really hasn't been very popular so it's nice to see that his drama is now doing well - even better than the previous few. It's also nice to see him back in something that has light moments in it. I like kdramas for the romance - it's pretty well done most of the time.

As for UF, I didn't follow the hype and am indifferent neutral to both actors. That really helped me to actually enjoy ep 1 and 2. It does kinda suck me into their odd world and make me want to know more about them. I will be watching despite the many flaws. The pacing is slow and odd and not sure it needs to be. Anyhow, I think maybe W will exceed it in ratings as the battle is always tough and in all the ones I have seen over the last 15 yrs, there is always a clear winner in terms of ratings. Nonetheless I hope that UF holds it own and will find its footing and capture viewers hearts. :) fighting!!

tbh, i was underwhelmed by the first 2 eps of uncontrollably fond. i found the narrative a bit choppy & hard to follow. HOW, WHEN & WHY did KWB's character start caring about suzy's character? i was totally under the impression that he did not give a damn about her at all, then all of a sudden he's worrying about her and wondering where she ran off to? plus, HOW, WHEN & WHY did they exchange numbers? did i miss something here? lol.

maybe i was just expecting too much from nice guy's writer (nice guy remains one of my all time faves and the reason i hardcore began stanning SJK & MCW, yes i was and continue to be a chaeki shipper) anyway, i'll continue watching UF (for the sake of KWB) but will probs have to drop it in favor of W when it premieres if UF continues at this same rate and doesn't give me SOMETHING to stick around for (i love me some KWB but i can only handle so much blah before it's a no go lol)

on the other hand, what are people's opinion about the good wife so far? i have not been able to find it subbed online so am still waiting to watch. i am a hardcore nana stan and am so pleased to hear that she is receiving good reviews so i want to check it out for her. what are people's thoughts so far?

Ok, so after reading all the comments about BM I decided to watch it. (I just happen to have a lot of free time this summer!). To me, it is ok. JH is definitely carrying the show! I mean, he is doing everything, doctor work and police work! I agree he is amazing in it, but at this point that's about it. Not into the other characters so much, except for HS. I feel like it's trying to be noir but not quite there? It took me all weekend to watch all 6 episodes. It just didn't have the "I have to watch the next episode" kind of feel. It's my first time watching PSD so I was interested as there is so much hype about her. I like her but yes, her character hasn't done much so far. And I understand, as a cop she doesn't have the medical knowledge required to figure out what exactly went wrong and what evidence to look for. Hence JH's character has all the knowledge. Will watch the next episodes to see if that changes as yes, episode 6 seems to be the turning point in the story so far.
