Moonlight Drawn By Clouds: Episode 13

Today puts us more in Ra-on’s shoes than I think we’ve been in a long time, and it’s an effective way to attune our emotions to hers, feeling the layers of meaning beneath the words she speaks and the smiles she sends. If only that didn’t make me so nervous about everyone else—everyone who doesn’t have the benefit of our dramatic irony and thus know what we do. Sometimes it’s such a burden knowing everything!

EPISODE 13: “Tenderly, goodbye”

Ra-on’s mother is determined to run away with Ra-on, and tells Teacher Dasan of her fears that somebody will make the link to her father. But of course, that’s the exact moment Ra-on arrives at the door, and she overhears the conversation with shock.

Now, Ra-on finally makes sense of all those things she didn’t understand before: Why she was forced to dress as a boy, and why they were constantly on the run. She says she understands her mother now, doing everything she could to shield Ra-on from the fact that her father was a traitor responsible for the deaths of thousands of peasants.

Ra-on’s mother tells her not to hate her father too much; he was trying to make the world a better place for her. But knowing the truth now just makes it all the more painful now, and Ra-on cries, “You should have kept me from knowing through the end.” Then she changes her mind: “No, you should have told me sooner.”

Ra-on’s mother holds her, apologizing. Ra-on cries for a moment, then asks her mother to let her go back today. Her mother is alarmed, insistent that they leave as soon as possible, but Ra-on promises to return soon: “He’s waiting. He doesn’t know anything.”

So later that night, Yeong waits outside Ra-on’s building, his face relaxing in relief when she arrives. She looks at him brightly while he scolds her for being late, and asks if he means to “punish” her again. Yeong laughs, noting that she seems to be looking forward to it, then steps forward to embrace her.

Ra-on keeps her smile in place until that hug, at which point it turns tearful. Yeong tells her he’ll forgive her since she came back safely.

In the morning as Ra-on finishes dressing Yeong, he notices that nobody else is around and asks if Eunuch Jang saddled her with all his duties. Ra-on replies that she requested to take on all the duties for the next few days, because she was unable to see Yeong for so long while he recovered from his injuries.

Yeong feigns a scolding attitude for all of two seconds before he breaks into a grin: “If you wanted me all to yourself so badly, I’ll allow it.”

Then Ra-on takes Yeong by the hand and makes a request to stay within a step of him all day, and to lean on his shoulder and nap on his knee. He readily assents to it all, including her added request for him to look at her all day instead of his books.

Yeong says it’s his turn, and asks if she’s mentally prepared. He pulls her close by the nape of the neck, and smiles when she closes her eyes. When he doesn’t kiss her, Ra-on cracks open an eye, and he tells her, “Do not make requests. I will do whatever you say.”

Ra-on takes his hand again, and they beam at each other like that, for long moments.

Yeong resumes holding court, and Minister Kim makes a show of bemoaning the terrible attempt on the prince’s life. Yeong notes that the minister ignoring his dismissal is an even more appalling occurrence, to which the prime minister says that he has shown loyalty by keeping his post throughout the prince’s absence.

But Minister Jo speaks up to point out that ignoring his dismissal is a flagrant act of disloyalty—and his breaking of the ranks surprises not only the Kim clan but the prince as well. Ah, so has Minister Jo decided to side with the king then?

The dismissed Minister Kim insists that he was just fulfilling his duties in a moment of crisis, and pleads for the prince’s understanding. The rest of the court chimes in.

Yeong hears the report from his royal commander regarding his assassination attempt: By the time soldiers had been mobilized, nine of the intruders were already dead. At that count, Byung-yeon furrows his brow—perhaps sensing a discrepancy there? The commander apologizes for not capturing anyone alive to provide them with answers.

Yeong is certain that they were directed by a palace insider, which would be the only way they could infiltrate the grounds unseen. Byung-yeong looks a bit concerned at that, while Yeong orders his commander to find any survivors.

With his left hand still healing from the fight, Yoon-sung drops a handful of scrolls. He kneels to pick them up, but Ra-on gets there first, and he brightens at the sight of her. She assures him that she’s fine and wasn’t hurt, and Yoon-sung asks after the prince’s condition.

Yeong happens to arrive then and replies that he’s fine, and the two men trade bows.

They step aside for a private talk, and Yeong admits that at a certain point, he was unable to see Yoon-sung purely as himself. Yoon-sung understands that, given that he’s meant to carry on the Kim bloodline.

“That reason is not wrong,” Yeong says. “However, seeing you take the sword headed for me with your bare hand—I was sorry.” Yoon-sung asks if he can consider some of his debt of gratitude to have been relieved, and states with new conviction, “From this moment on, I will not wait, or take special care, or make requests.”

Yeong understands that he’s declaring himself as a rival (nooo, what about my beautiful bromance) and says he doesn’t intend to stop Yoon-sung: “It’s when one has tried their hardest that one can resign.”

That night when Yeong finds Ra-on in his library, she tells him to pay attention as she indicates which books require airing out, and which have been damaged. Ack, stop making everything sound like goodbye! Yeong asks why he has to know this, and says she’s doing needless work when that can all be taken care of in due time. She replies, “Whether it’s done at once or slowly, it’s all work I must do.”

Then Ra-on asks if she should write down the nighttime story she’d told him when he couldn’t sleep, but he says that there’s no need: “Whenever I want to hear it, I can just call you.”

A few moments later, Yeong looks around for Ra-on and doesn’t see her. She surprises him by enveloping him in a back-hug, and asks to stay like this just for a short while. Yeong smiles, and tells her she can stay like that for a long, long while instead.

Ra-on locks her fingers together as she holds him around his waist, and he places his hands on top of hers and leans back into her embrace. I should note that even the background song is urging her not to break up: If the two of us become one again, let us never separate. Even if the harsh rain shakes us, let us not be apart. Let us not collapse.

Ha-yeon drops by the palace and speaks to Ra-on, and admits ruefully that her advice to be honest about her feelings with the prince didn’t work. Ha-yeon explains, “So from now on, I have decided not to reveal my feelings, in order to stay by the prince’s side. If I do that, even if I am not the person he cares for, I can become someone who will help him.”

Ra-on seems worried for Ha-yeon’s own sake, asking if that won’t be difficult for her. Ha-yeon agrees that it will be, but says that the day may come when he will recognize her feelings. She asks if she’s pathetic, but Ra-on assures her she isn’t, and asks Ha-yeon to take good care of the prince: “A lady like you suits the prince.”

Ha-yeon says that it feels like Ra-on has become her friend and asks if it would be okay to call her when she needs to talk things out. She admits to waiting around the garden for ages for a glimpse of the prince and is about to give up, but Ra-on calls her back, though she hesitates to speak.

The next thing we know, Ha-yeon is making her way to the prince’s private library—Ra-on must have tipped her off. Yeong hears footsteps and starts to scold Ra-on for disappearing on him, but cuts himself off to see Ha-yeon instead.

She explains that she had something to ask him, and reminds him of his words about having a woman in his heart. Given that he’s been rejecting pressure to marry, she wonders if that woman is someone he is unable to marry.

“I will become your nest,” Ha-yeon offers. She points out that he can’t refuse to marry forever, and suggests that he find someone who would be helpful to himself and the king. Yeong asks if she means herself, and she replies yes: “In order to flap your wings and take on grand ambitions, please use me and my family.”

Meanwhile, Yoon-sung calls Ra-on and faces her sternly, making her wonder at his angry expression. Yoon-sung admits to feeling angry with himself for always being a step late: “But this time, I must not be late. Not for me, but for you.” He urges her to leave.

Yeong tells Ha-yeon he won’t be able to give her any of his heart. She replies that she is not so pathetic as to beg for affection from a man who carries another woman in his heart. He asks why she wants to be the princess given these circumstances, and she says that it’s for the future of her family.

Yeong warns, “Your family may flourish, but you will be infinitely lonely.” Ha-yeon answers, “It does not matter. It is only a deal for us both to profit from.” She does her best to seem assured, though her eyes already look sad.

Yoon-sung tries to convince Ra-on of the urgency, saying that he’s not asking her to come to him; he just wants her safe. But Ra-on tells him she plans to leave, and asks him not to let on that he knows: “If you know much about me, it will not be good for you.”

He asks what she means—those words make him wonder if she knows what he does. She cuts him off and repeats her warning.

Ministers Dumb and Dumber get bad news: The tenth assassin that got away the night of the prince’s attack has since been caught. If he confesses while under interrogation, their necks are on the line.

Prime Minister Kim overhears the conversation and demands and explanation, nearly blowing his top upon hearing that the last assassin is now in custody.

Young Master Jung reports to Yeong that the white masks worn by the assassins were not the same masks belonging to the rebel secret society (named Baekwoonhwe, or White Cloud Society, for the white masks they wear and the “cloud” character written on the messages they leave behind).

He explains that the rebels wear their masks not to conceal their identities but to make their cause more widely known. That’s why every time they are involved in an incident, they leave behind something explaining their reasons. But there was nothing left after the prince’s attack; they were only there to kill Yeong.

Byung-yeon joins them just then, and Yeong clocks his reaction to seeing the mask there on his desk. Byung-yeon does his best to not betray anything, and informs Yeong that he needs to go somewhere right away.

The tenth assassin is tortured and interrogated at the royal tribunal, under the watch of the three Kim ministers. The man begs for mercy, saying that he was only doing as ordered, but Minister Dumber presses him, acting the part of the righteous official. The man looks over to Minister Dumb, who nods back. Hm, there’s something there.

Yeong calls a halt to the proceedings, then orders Minister Dumber to stop with the torture and resume interrogation. So the torturers step aside and the minister asks again who ordered the assassination attempt.

But the Kims aren’t too worried that he’ll spill, and a flashback shows us why: Minister Dumb had visited the assassin in his prison cell and offered him a deal. If he did as ordered, the man’s family would be spared.

So now, the minister digs the hilt of his sword into the man’s leg as a reminder, and the assassin mumbles a name: Baekwoonhwe. Gack! Byung-yeon (and quite possibly Yeong too) has to know he’s lying, but is hardly in a place to dispute it. The man declares that there’s a Baekwoonhwe member inside the palace who helped them infiltrate it.

To make the claim even more credible, the assassin declares that Hong Kyung-rae’s daughter is alive and inside the palace, preparing to revive the rebellion. Minister Dumber asks who that is, and Byung-yeon and Yeong both tense as he starts to answer.

And then, a hand grabs a sword and drives it through the man, stunning everyone present. Prime Minister Kim silences him before he has a chance to say it, and Yeong turns on him furiously. The prime minister says that the man confessed to treason (hence deserved to die), but Yeong argues that he had no right to kill anyone, traitor or not, without the king’s approval.

Prime Minister Kim replies that both the king and prince are so prone to hesitation that he had no choice but to step in.

Yeong grabs Byung-yeon’s sword and levels it against the prime minister, demanding, “Killing my citizen in front of me, the crown prince, makes you another traitor—do you not know that?” The prime minister replies levelly that if his action endangered the royal house, the prince ought to kill him right now.

The ministers all call for Yeong to back down, and the prime minister tells him that endangering the nation is cause for swift punishment. Yeong replies that this is exactly why he cannot withdraw his sword now, and the cries of the ministers grow.

Finally, it’s Byung-yeon who places a hand on Yeong’s and refuses to let go. Yeong glares and resists, but ultimately lets him pull his arm down.

The ministers breathe a sigh of relief, although Prime Minister Kim scarcely bats an eye.

The next day at mealtime in the eunuch department, Ra-on surprises Eunuch Jang by setting a piece of food on his spoon. Ah, will you stop with the touching final acts of consideration to people who don’t know you’re leaving? *Wahhhhhh*

She tenses when the other eunuchs talk about the captured assassin, who was supposedly acting in concert with Hong Kyung-rae’s allies. Even more upsetting is the rumor that Hong’s daughter is currently a spy in the palace, and opened the gate for the assassins.

Princess Myeongeun takes tea at an outdoor pavilion, and lovelorn Young Master Jung watches from a distance, a letter in his hand. It’s that letter that she discovers left for her on her way out, and she opens it to find a picture—of herself, in her chubbier days.

The accompanying message is something of a riddle: “You who are not present, but neither are you absent, my nim (dear).” (That’s a reference to how he’d told the princess his sweetheart was neither still in the palace nor gone from it.) The letter is signed with the name Jung Deok-ho, and she tries to place it, finally landing on Young Master Jung.

He appears before then, and while her first reaction is assuming that he’s here to annoy her again, he identifies himself as Jung Deok-ho. Princess Myeongeun is shocked, having thought he’d loved Wol-hee, and he’s so astonished that he stutters to come up with an explanation, grabbing for her hand to insist that she’s the one he loved.

Princes Myeongeun slaps him for daring to touch her and turns away angrily as he tries to stammer out that he loves her. With no other way to stop her from leaving, he yells, “HEY!” Omo and hahaha.

The princess turns, and he says, notably in the most familiar banmal, “It’s you. You. The person I love.”

The Kims convene to discuss the death of their henchman, and who he’d last met with. Once they meet with that source, they’ll be able to figure out what information the henchman died before he could deliver. As we know, it was Yoon-sung who intercepted that message to keep Ra-on’s identity safe—though if his elders track down the message’s source, they’ll discover it anyway.

The queen receives word that her hidden court lady has given birth to a son. That’s exactly what she was hoping for, although she’s not out of the woods yet, since she’s still pregnant. She informs her eunuch to ensure that the baby’s cries are not heard…

Which is exactly what Yoon-sung hears when he drops by to make an obligatory greeting to the queen. He spots a court lady slipping out of a room, and files this information away. Then when he visits the queen, he inquires after her condition and notes her uneasiness.

The king rebukes the prime minister for acting in haste in killing the assassin. Prime Minister Kim says he’s ferreted out the identity of the spy in the palace and hands over a scroll as proof. The king reads the name Hong Ra-on, which makes Head Eunuch Han look up in alarm.

Eunuch Han meets with Byung-yeon later, and tells him that they will now protect Ra-on under Baekwoonhwe’s name. “The time has passed for waiting for a choice,” he declares. Byung-yeon is alarmed at the implication that they’d take Ra-on by force, but Head Eunuch Han says they can’t leave her in danger and informs him that they’ll remove Ra-on secretly tomorrow.

With the palace ready to start their search for the hidden spy, the Kim faction is equally aware of the need to locate Ra-on first, knowing that she would be a valuable trump card for them. Yoon-sung overhears this, looking stricken, and leaves his home wearing a stern face.

He runs right into Byung-yeon, who’s been waiting for him outside, armed with a request. He reminds Yoon-sung that he’d acted against his grandfather’s wishes once to save Ra-on, and asks him now to take her away from the palace secretly.

That night, Ra-on watches Yeong as he sleeps—or rather, as he drowsily insists that he’s not sleepy¸ and that there’s no need for her to stay up all night. She replies that she wants to look at him all night, to which he replies, “You can see me tomorrow to your heart’s content.”

She says, “Things we always see and always do—there are times when they suddenly feel precious, are there not?”

Yeong thinks, and says, “That’s true, when you think they are the last time.” She agrees, the tears pooling in her eyes as she explains how the most trivial things can feel special when you think they’re the last time.

Yeong concedes the point (but doesn’t connect the dots) and pats the space next to him, inviting her to look her fill. Ra-on kneels next to his bed and smiles down at him tenderly, cupping her face in her palm as she stares at his face. Suddenly Yeong grabs her hand and pulls her into bed with him, covering her with the blanket.

Ra-on asks, “If I had been born the daughter of a nobleman and come to your side, would you have looked on me fondly?” He replies, “Is that not obvious?”

She asks if they would have still been fated to meet if she hadn’t dressed as a young nobleman that day, and he replies with the same answer.

He cups her face with his hand, their eternity bracelets just inches from each other, and says, “Did I not tell you? Even if we turn and turn, we are fated to meet again.”

He falls asleep then, and she continues to stare at his face. She thinks forlornly, “But, one day, even if you were to learn that I am the daughter of a traitor, will you not regret having met me? Right now, this moment—will you long for it just once?”

With a tear falling from her eye, Ra-on leans in to press a kiss to Yeong’s lips. His eyes flutter open for the briefest moment as he smiles into the kiss, and then they fall closed in sleep again.

Ra-on pulls back and traces his face with her fingers, then nestles close as she cries quietly in his arms.

When Yeong wakes in the morning, he’s in bed alone. He calls out for Ra-on and doesn’t see her, then calls out for anyone outside. It’s Eunuch Jang who steps inside, and he says he hasn’t seen Ra-on yet this morning.

Yeong steps outside to an ominous sight, with soldiers combing the palace grounds. Minister Kim greets him, and Yeong asks about the disturbance. It’s the first time he’s hearing of the king’s order to capture the rebel leader’s daughter, who has finally been confirmed to be hiding in the palace as a spy.

That in itself doesn’t startle Yeong, who just asks if the report gave a description of that daughter. Minister Kim tells him that they have no physical description, but know that she’s eighteen years old and used to live with her mother—and that her childhood name was Hong Ra-on.

At that name, everything goes fuzzy as Yeong’s brain shuts out all sound. He doesn’t hear the rest of Minister Kim’s sentence, and asks him to repeat that name.

The minister clocks Yeong’s odd reaction, and explains that everyone in that age range is being investigated, and that the daughter will be using a different name now.

Yeong reels. He stands stock-still in the rain, hardly knowing what to do with the information.

He next heads to Ra-on’s quarters, thinking of when Ra-on first told him her name. He calls Ra-on’s name aloud and looks around, and then all goes silent for a moment…

…until he sees her eunuch’s uniform neatly folded and left behind—and her eternity bracelet with it.

COMMENTS

Aw, sniff. *wails* Why can’t they just find some magical miracle solution to be together without somehow committing capital crimes and upending the whole social order? Is that asking for too much? Where’s our fairy gatmother when we need one?

That said, I thought the whole episode was a classy affair. It was a loving tribute to farewell—I knew it was coming and felt it in every interaction, but it was handled in such a tender, heartfelt way that it felt like there was comfort mixed in there amongst the dread. (I mean, mostly dread. But still, a little comfort.) A lot of dramas employ this type of farewell trip motif, often in the form of one perfect day meant to sustain both people through the separation stretching before them—and most of the time, I hate it. Mostly because it’s crushingly unfair to the one party who’s left in the dark about it being farewell at all, and also because most of the time the ensuing separation is dumb as a doorknob. No offense to doorknobs, which are frequently useful.

Sometimes, though, a story finds the poignancy in the perfect last day and uses it well. I don’t actually know how this drama managed to make me like it, except maybe I appreciated having an episode’s worth of time to anticipate the eventuality, like easing into the mourning. Or maybe it’s because it I loved that it gave Ra-on a chance to be freer with her emotions in a way she couldn’t be before, prodding her into pouring all of her love out into every possible moment. As a result, not only does the episode show Ra-on really feeling the preciousness of every last moment, it also accomplishes that on a meta level, because it got me emotionally right there with her at every step, feeling the finality and momentousness of each interaction.

I’m extra sad that Ra-on left behind her bracelet, because it makes their separation feel extra final; Yeong reminds her of the superstition associated with the bracelets, that as long as the two lovers keep wearing it, they are fated to reunite. So it’s a rejection of that promise to reunite, indicating that she doesn’t expect to ever see him again. I suppose in that sense it’s an effective way to set the prince free to marry; historically speaking it makes every kind of sense for him to marry Ha-yeon no matter what Ra-on’s status, but given that this is a fusion sageuk meant to satisfy modern sensibilities, it gives narrative permission for him to marry someone else.

I have to say I am glad that Ra-on is finally out of the palace, because it feels like it’s been a long time coming. I don’t wish that they’d done this earlier, because I wouldn’t take back any moments of Ra-on and Yeong’s relationship development; it’s just a good time in the story to have her identity finally outed. Having Ra-on stay in the palace till now gave their relationship a chance to blossom and flourish in such a way that I feel like they’ve become a married couple—they have interacted like a firmly established couple who are solid in their commitment and assured of their standing, in a way that goes beyond mere sweethearts. So from a story standpoint, it’s time to move to the next part of the conflict.

It also turns the royal wedding into less of an expected angstfest for me, because I don’t think any of us were looking forward to watching Ra-on step back while another woman married the prince. I’m a little wary of what the drama will feel like when you take away the sweet stolen moments between Yeong and Ra-on, because that’s been a huuuuge part of its charm. Not the only charm, but definitely one of the prominent ones. I suppose after twelve episodes of satisfying, emotionally gratifying emotion, it’s time to put my trust in the producers to find a way to maintain its energy and emotional pull in new situations. Eeeee. *squints* *holds breath*

I haven't seen the ep yet, but I've spoiled myself silly already so I'll just comment properly when I've watched it later. Right now I'm at work and I've been playing music all day and now and again the Moonlight songs will come on, and I just experience this sudden, aching weight in my chest because I already know how much pain my beautiful Prince and his Eunuch are, and I am so invested in these characters, it's gone past ridiculous at this point. (I love every song in the OST, and I actually adore songs with English mixed in, so it's a double treat for me.)

I have no idea, I thought it was supposed to be released before Lee Juck's song, but Lee Juck's song came out first. But they tend to release 2 songs per weal so I'm hoping it'll be released today/tomorrow, because that song would describe Yeong's longing for Ra-on perfectly. Imagine him sitting in his room, looking at the bracelet, crying, with that song in the background, chilling.

* sigh * HCY's OST wasn't played at all in Ep 14, Beige's song was played instead. I am starting to be REALLY worried about this, to be honest. All HCY fans are fervently hoping/praying that next Monday, they'll get to hear his beautiful voice in the drama.

0

Yeah, I checked. It hasn't been released yet, maybe because they've announced that Lee Juck's song will be last, so they're keeping it for next week instead.

Thanks for the recap, JB!

Another ep that just strikes my heart every time RO's eyes are starting to tear and she prepares to say her good-byes. KYJ did an amazing job to make us feel each moment that RO was feeling. Savouring every minute with Yeong so that she has many memories to last her for the future. I do have to admit that I had to suspend my belief a little that Yeong didn't even suspect a thing... He's supposed to be smart and observant, right? So, how gone he didn't pick up any of the signs? Not when tears are filling up RO's eyes, not when she was done sorting the books into piles, not when hugging and crying, not when she's saying it's more precious when it's the last time... It's like he didn't have any awareness of the subtle changes in RO's behaviour at all... In any case, I love all the scenes with our two leads and it was just a really bittersweet ep.

Love Master Jung and his smart brain. No wonder he was top scorer in the exam. It's awesome to see him aiding the prince with his analytical skills. Plus, he's so cute with the princess!

I still like HY and it might not be a bad offer for Yeong just cuz we all know he will inevitably be forced into a royal marriage. So, better to have someone on your side instead from the Kim clan.

It's touching to see how much YS is willing to do for RO despite his feelings not being reciprocated. I'm just waiting for all three boys to team up and protect RO while fighting off the Kims' plans.

The ending was perfectly portrayed when that news bomb was dropped on Yeong. It was doubly sad that RO left her bracelet behind. I hope Yeong will not cast any doubt on RO with regards to the rebel cause.

To be fair, Yeong must have chalked up Ra-on's tears as an overflowing of emotion after she met her mother. He seemed also simply too tired to register them later during the bed scene. She wasn't really teary-eyed (although her eyes were a bit red) during the library scene, and his back was turned during the backhug.

The sudden burst of affection could be attributed to Yeong's near-death experience scaring the shit out of Ra-on (which it did, and which Yeong knows well). Yeong never imagined that Ra-on could leave him so suddenly after everything they'd gone through.

Yes and I'd like to add that especially after Raon just asked him not to let go and that she will never let go, Yeong would not have thought of it. Which of course now makes it look really sad because she ended up letting go when he would never and was sure that she'd never do it... ouch

Something to look forward to. hihi! I just want them to be deliriously happy and sickeningly lovey dovey in the end.

0

I think that's one of hardest things for him to reconcile in his head right now...the fact that she broke the promise and left her bracelet behind... =(

The latter part I agree since he probably didn't think she would leave him anytime soon, if ever. And I didn't think too much about how he might attribute her emotions to just reuniting with her mom. I suppose what I was thinking was that if two people are in love, they are often attuned to each other. So, a sudden change in behaviour, albeit quite subtle, might indicate that something is off. I didn't mean that he would immediately think she's leaving him. More like one of those instincts in the back of your mind that something doesn't feel quite right, but can still be denied and brushed aside cuz you never expect it to really happen. ^^ Then again, maybe girls are better at picking up these small signs than guys? =P

Yeong is just head over heels right now that every time he's with Raon he's not the smart and observant royal that we know. He's in his happy world throughout and he's just soaking it up. Besides, Raon told him she's happy because he reunited her with her mother so for Yeong, her happiness merely translates to her being lovey-dovey with him. I would have felt the same.

Him being totally unaware just made the last scene all the more devastating. When the penny dropped... when the bubble burst...

Yes, that last scene was especially heartbreaking since he couldn't reason with himself what was happening and there was no way his brain could comprehend the possibility of RO getting close to him cuz she was a spy... I felt like he just got a bucket of ice water dumped on him that moment he heard the name...to the point that he couldn't put up his usual calm demeanour in order to avoid casting any suspicion that he might know something. He just got socked in the gut.

I think he did have this fear of Ra-on leaving him, how could he not after Master Dasan's and Younsung's words? That's why he was so restless waiting for Ra-on.
But then, she came back! She kept her promise! She won't leave him!
Maybe that's when he became completely off guard??

This! I think I'd lean more towards this train of thought... The fear is in the back of his mind, but not something that would be immediately what he thinks about since he's kinda brushed it aside. So, the moment that really sinks in was at the end when he was told they were hunting for Hong Ra On. Now it all makes sense what he was warned about! He just didn't know it'd hit so soon.

*sniff* Okay, a few words:

Separation angst done right: when I'm simultaneously urging her, "Nooo, don't leave!" and "Get out of there now!"

I'm not entirely convinced Yeong didn't pick up on her emotions at all - he's too smart. But maybe he just chalked it up to her being emotional about both reuniting with her mother and almost losing him - I know he'd be acting much the same if he'd literally watched her almost die.

Please, Yeong, please don't believe what the Kims tell you about her! And please, Byeong-yeon, just come clean. Yeong wants to trust you!

And finally, the more I see of Ha-young, the more I feel for her. I'm so sad that she'll marry Yeong instead of Ra-on, and also so sad that he'll never love her.

*back to the tears*

I like how, at least for the hero generation, everyone has more than one motivation. For instance, I think Byung-yeon wanted to prevent Ra-on from feeling pain like his, but I also think he wanted to prevent the prince from feeling the same. And for Yung-song too. Right now their protective instincts for different people are aligning, even if the prince may not see it that way, but that could shift. It creates so many feels, but more importantly a lot of rewarding narrative possibilities.

Also, let's just reiterate for great KYJ was this episode, and generally. It's so easy to get caught up in PBG's pretty and more demonstrative character, but she is definitely tangoing backwards... And in heels tonight. She brought all the feels.

just wanna say that I'm eternally grateful they decided to cast Jinyoung as Yoonsung. Can't imagine if Yook Sungjae is cast instead, not saying he's bad but I think I wouldn't be so invested with his character as much... Partly because Jinyoung has this mysterious aura on his face..partly playboy, partly gentle, and partly badass, which is so perfect for a emotion-less character like Yoonsung.
Although I love Lee Young and PBG so much, I still feel sorry for him, but at the same time want to vouch for him. Usually I'm meh to second leads but I cant with Yoonsung.

Remember when Kim Hyung went around investigating about Hong Kyung-rae's daughter and heard from her old neighbour that the child is named Ra-on? Some people were trailing behind Kim Hyung, probably the Kim clan's spies, so they too found out that the child name is Ra-on. After that they probably tracked where the mother and daughter fled to all those years, and the trails lead to Ra-on's adopted father and the thugs who sold her to the palace to become eunuch in the first place. So now, everyone knows she's in the palace.

I think Kim clan only knows about Raon name. So they are just staging that Hong Raon is in the palace and helping the rebel (without knowing that she really is in the palace).
One of their convo was about "to use that identity as bait to lure out the rebel spies". As they only know of her name and that she is the daughter, of course they will check the court ladies and female workers first. who would thought she infiltrate as an ennuch (consider the physical exam).

Ah, yes yes. Anh explained it correctly. They only knew Ra-on's name from trailing Kim Hyung and framed the rebel for the assassination attempt on Yeong, only the rebel knew Ra-on's identity as of now.

Thank you maryxiah and Anh for the explanation. I understand now so they want to framed the rebel with the assassin of Yeong but because of the captured assassin they are afraid it might get exposed so the minister are saying that there are spies of the rebel and Ra-on in the palace.

Like what everyone have said, it's about time that Raon leave the palace. And while there is too much heartbreak especially for Yeong, I am truly excited with how the story will proceed from here. How will Yeong react? What will he do with the information he has? What will be the next move of the rebels? 5 more episodes to go!

'Sometimes, Not knowing the truth is a gift'
this is what I thought when ra on asked her mother why she didn't keep it from her forever or told her sooner. That scene was emotional. I have always thought truth liberates but in her case it tied her down.

Even then I didn't think ra on would leave the palace without telling yeong. Even though she kept hinting at goodbye, I thought she would tell him before she finally left. He deserved to know from her, in my opinion.

I thought she would tell him the way yeong told her he was the Crown Prince. Though it may feel like telling i am the rebel's daughter is not the same as telling I am the crown prince. It is actually the same thing. They were born that way. It is not like ra on chose to be daughter to the person who caused the rebellion so its not her fault at all. I am sure he would have trusted her because when you love someone it also means you trust them. Because love is actually giving someone the power to break you but trusting them not to.

I understand that yeong wouldn't have let her go but when he realizes how dangerous It is for her in the palace he probably would have sent her to a safe place himself. But, Now he has to deal with the confusion of how true her feelings were, like with the case of kim hyung along with the hurt of her leaving him.

But, I guess this is better for the drama as a whole.

Why do I cry so much watching this show? each and every episode is so beautifully done that it gets me right in the heart.

I was hoping that she wouldn't leave, I thought she chose him but seeing how everything turned out this episode I think she made the right decision, both herself and Yeong would've been in danger if she stayed, it was a matter of time before everyone else knew about her and then Yeong would've had no way of saving her, but OMG, the tears!

Everytime she looked at him with tear filled eyes I found myself sniffling back tears. She was still with him, but she looked at him so longingly that you can't help bet get heartbroken for her, for them. Everytime he'd say she could do it later or look at him tomorrow, I cried no she couldn't, she won't be there!

I also think that Yeong might know that the attack wasn't the Baekwoonhwe rebels' doing, he knows that Byung-yeon is keeping secrets but he also knows that he wouldn't do anything to hurt him. I think one of the reason why Byung-yeon asked Yoon-sung to run away with Ra-on is because he knows how important she is to Yeong, and he wants to keep her safe and away from his rebel group even if it meant disobeying his leader's orders.

Where will this put Yoon-sung if his Kim's family finds out, I don't know but I want no harm to touch our Yoon-sung, I want him safe too, for bromance's sake!

Thanks javabeans for the recap.

I knew the angst was coming and I actually prepared myself for it but I swear no one can be prepared for the angst!! :(((( I cried while watching some parts raw last night then cried again while watching it with subs this morning.
Yoojung was really spot on with making us feel Raon's pain omg that scrunched expression she made after she kissed Yeong??? I'm picking the broken pieces of my heart right now. I love how the actors are so detailed with their acting that every time I re-watch, I notice a new expression which makes it even better (lol idk).
Thank god Hayeon is not what I thought she is (you know, the typical pushy second lead) and I actually feel sad for her, I want her to have her own happy ending because she deserves it. :(((( well, actually, both the second leads deserve a happy ending (it will be better if they actually end up together lol)
Not gonna comment much on Bogummy anymore because it will take up all the comment spaces here (lol). He's nailing it as usual tho idk if this is only me but I can feel his exhaustion emanating from my screen?? His face when Raon suddenly backhugged him was so cute omg he looked so confused?? (probably because she rarely initiates the first move lol) The scene where he found out about Raon's real identity was amazing, I can feel like my world stopped like his too. And the scene where he found the bracelet omg my precious boy :(((( (preparing tissues since I saw him crying in the preview; more for me than him lol)
I just love everything about this show and all I'm hoping for is a happy ending because Yeong and Raon really deserves it (and we all deserve it too!!). Can't believe that I actually anticipate Mondays because of Moonlight lol I'll be back to hating Monday after two weeks, I'm sure of this.

Every episode of this drama is beautiful and full of beautiful shots. My favorites:

- CP waking up and calling for Rain On. And then the camera coming in as CP pulls himself up. It felt like a movie, not a drama.

- CP finding out Ra On 's identity. Wow, I could feel his disorientation and shock. The way the music screeched to a haul, the use of silence. Wow, so good.

Of course, I respect KJY so much. What a phenomenal talent. I don't speak Korean but it sounds so natural and absolutely devastating when she said 'he's waiting for me. He doesn't know anything' or Nother equally haunting line 'you should have kept it from me forever. No, you should have to.kd me a bit sooner'.

And the actress who played the future crown princess is also great. I noticed her eyes swelling up with tears when she told the CP she only wanted a business transaction out of the marriage. She's so in love.

The story is so tightly written. I understand why Ra On must leave. I can see why the CP will go through with the Royal marriage. He is too politically weak to protect Ra On. He will never do it for himself but he will do it for her.

Eunuch Han arranged it. He has several contacts within the palace and without. I bet it's pretty easy for him to make a false story about an orphan boy.

I know Eunuch Han saved him, my question is how did he even manage to be free to live as his own, I'm sure he didn't change his name like Ra-on, and Yoon-sung and Yeong made no effort to mention about his family either, which makes me think they might not know his family was killed for treason. How can a son of a man accused of treason, live with his identity, entered the palace and serve his friend, and his friend didn't even bother asking question as well. Byung-yeon was a son of nobleman right?

I meant that Eunuch Han had the capability to fake his identity. With his connections, it's probably quite easy for him to have Kim Hyung adopted by a provincial yangban family with the same last name. Kim Hyung will have his ready made background without having to associate with this "family" that much.

Of course, this is just speculation.

Ok! Kid in bed, I finally have time to read all the comments here and say something more coherent of my own!

Just want to highlight some more unusual scenes that moved me this episode:

Ra On and her mother-

Heartbreaking. The acting was perfect and whoever wrote the script did it so well. The conflicting emotions Ra On was feeling was so beautifully displayed in the scene- I especially loved the part where she said 2 conflicting statements one after another-

("Dont hate your father too much. He wanted to give you a better world to live in.")

"Why didn't you keep it from me forever?
No.
Why didn't you tell me sooner?"

She wishes she could still live in ignorance and be happy, but then realises she is being selfish to not share in her mother's burden, and then wishes to have known earlier, then maybe she wouldn't have given her heart away to the Prince?

So full of feels.

Then the second leads. It's an interesting situation in Moonlight that the second leads (thus far) are righteous and kind people. I was especially moved by Ha Yeon. She is in fact acting like a self sacrificial female lead. In another show, she could be the lead, and the Crown Prince would marry her out of obligation but would slowly fall in love with her.

With gives me food for thought- that you need a very very strong OTP in order not to get second lead syndrome, or in this case, start shipping her with Prince Yeong. And I think Moonlight really owes a lot to its main leads, because this story can have such awesome second leads, simply because of the chemistry of the mains, because no one can imagine anything else than the OTP.

And I wondering if this is going to end off with heart ache ALL ROUND, as now I not only want a Happily Ever After for the OTP, but also Ha Yeon, and Yoon Sung. And goodness knows how the writer is going to achieve that.

Perhaps I just have to face up to the inevitable fact that somewhere along the way, I'm going to have my heart ripped out. In the best way possible of course.

Ah I love this show <3

I read posts hinting about BY's shift of loyalty as far as the CP is concerned, favoring the rebel group. I beg to disagree after watching the developments in this episode,

BY, after knowing the Chief Eunuch's plan to take Raon out of the palace and to bring her to the Baekwoon headquarters, went to YS to ask his help to bring Raon out of the palace. It might not directly relate to the CP but the mere fact that BY trusted Raon more with YS rather than the rebel group goes the show that BY has in mind what he thinks would set the CP's mind at ease as far as Raon's well-being is concerned,

I love the good-hearted YS and BY and my heart goes out to them realizing how they're putting their lives on the line, going against family, in the case of YS, and against one's political affiliation, in the case of BY, to go to the aid of the CP and Raon!

Thank you so much for this great recap, JB! I finished watching this episode with a literally heavy heart. This is so not healthy.

I just feel so sorry for Yeong and Ra-on. I was still feeling giddy because of the sweetness but also so sad watching those scenes because it's Ra-on's goodbye while Yeong didn't even have a clue. I love the scene in bed. It was so tender and beautiful. I wonder why Yeong could sleep with Ra-on on his bed. But that's really the whole point isn't it? Poor Yeong was just so confident that Ra-on will always be with him that he just slept like a baby beside her. I just cried silently with Ra-on starting when she told her mother that Yeong is waiting. Boy, am I glad she chose to stay for a few more days. Well, tomorrow, I think I will cry with Yeong. Then there will be that impending wedding and if it pushes thorough then I'll cry with Ra-on. Gee show, this is really too much. This would be alright if you promise a happy ending please? I hope the three musketeers would help us get that wish...

'He's waiting,' Ra On said, eyes brimming with tears. 'He doesn't know anything.'

Those two lines just kept replaying in my head over and over as I watched the episode. It was poignant and heartbreaking, especially because our Prince, who is watching the world through rose-coloured glasses whenever he's with Ra On, doesn't know a single thing. DAMN that happy cloud he's in. I don't even wonder why the normally astute Yeong doesn't notice anything amiss with Ra On. He's in love, he's been assured that Ra On wouldn't leave him, and he's still probably battling some leftover fatigue from being stabbed and the usual court intrigues.

KYJ was so incredible in this episode. Ra On was clearly on the verge of tears whenever it was just her and Yeong, but you could tell she was still so happy to just look and touch her Prince even if it was tinged with sadness and longing. Every single second of the bedroom scene was perfect. It was emotional and sweet and painful. The way she kept asking him 'what if? what if?' just to hear him tell her that yes, of course, silly sweetheart, we would still meet and fall in love, was just crushing. She was so full of tenderness and love for Yeong, and when she curled even closer? Goodbye, Joy, hello, Sadness.

I don't think this entire episode would have worked as well as it did if Yeong wasn't so blissfully oblivious. Every time he blithely responded that Ra On would still be there the next day just gripped my heart even tighter. Damn it, when he woke up without Ra On, he didn't even know yet that he was WITHOUT RA ON. That was horrible. Then, that moment in the rain. (Okay, you protect the Prince religiously at every other moment but not when it rains? Haha.) When the Minister's voice filters away, and there's just the sound of raindrops, and Yeong's moment of complete and utter blankness? Wow. WOW. You really do stop breathing with him. My heart skipped a beat. Then it was shattered at the end, because Yeong's face? When he looked over his shoulder with that lost expression? That was. I have no words. This is the boy who's mother was killed, who's father is a distant, cowering shadow, who's friends hide more from him, who's finally happy for the first time in a long, long time. So that face just killed me.

This episode left me, predictably, heartbroken but it also left me surprisingly angry. Not that Ra On had to leave, because she really needed to, but because Yeong was kept in the dark about the most important thing and by the very people who should have had his back. GAH. I don't think Yeong would have kept Ra On with him after finding out her identity and how everyone wants to use her. He wants her safe, just as much as Ra On wants him safe. This is actually the perfect place to keep them apart because the show has brilliantly made us believe that their love for each other is both selfish and selfless, and it's easy to see them sacrifice their happy days just to keep the other safe.

I don't actually want to change how they did it, I'm just angry because Yeong is sad. I want to keep him in fluffy blankets and feed him tea and biscuits forever.

WHEW. That was an intense episode. Ha Yeon impressed me so much because she's so different from the other second females we've had. She's been true to her sweet, cheeky, and honest character since the start and I'm actually looking forward to her being more involved in the show, how she'll handle her unrequited love. That scene with her and Ra On was another favourite, because she was unconsciously baring her heart out to the girl who stole the Prince's heart, and you can really appreciate Ra On's goodness because she told her where to find the Prince despite wanting so badly to be in Ha Yeon's shoes. When Ra On told Ha Yeon that she's the perfect person to be with the Prince? Damn it.

I want to see Yeong and Ra On grapple with being on their own. There're hints of Yeong maybe doubting Ra On's love and I want to see him reaffirm his trust in her, and of course, kick everyone's ass despite being broken-hearted. I want to see Ra On still fight for Yeong and for her own beliefs by refusing to join the rebels. I want Byung Yeon and Yoon Sung to finally choose a side before it's too late for them because ambivalence and selective action can only take you so far, especially when it comes to - what I think are hints of - revolution.

Show, why are you so bloody good? I have so many more thoughts but I've run out of characters hahahaha

I am angry that yeong was kept in the dark too. I think ra on leaving him and breaking her promise would have hurt him more than knowing that she is the rebel's daughter. Right now, I think he would feel all alone because the other person he relied on was byung yeon but the doubts about him being the rebel group is not cleared as well. I though yoon sung would start being friends with him and slowly build trust but I was kind of put off when he told that this means he takes he doesn't need to have any feelings of debt to him anymore when yeong apologized.

It makes me even more angry when I know the kind of person yeong is. How he told byung yeon thay if there is one person he would trust, it is him. How he showed his vulnerability (with respect to ra on) to ask ra on to promise him that she wouldn't leave him in a difficult situation. That is actually quite brave because he indirectly told her how much she means to him. He doesn't deserve any of this and definitely not from the people who he holds close to his heart.

Sorry for the ranting. Its just my heart is breaking for him.

I have to say that the bracelets that Yeong and Ra On wear have been making me nervous. I really hope that these two are able to be together in their own timeline and that it doesn't simply become a symbol of two people "fated" to be together in another lifetime. How I wish Crown Princess is evil to hate her or any reason for her to be overthrown later! But I feel her, it would be hard to not fall in love with a smart and attractive man, etc and genuine & faithful (given the period). Although it is the path she chose, still feel bad.

HY does not deserve our contempt. She is one determined individual who goes for what she has set her heart on. But she is also a woman and like most, if not all women especially with the men they like or love, she says the opposite of what she means. Although she tells him that she doesn't mind that marriage with Yeong will be a "loveless marriage," her heart is really cut to the core as shown by her sad, tear-filled eyes. At most, she deserves our sympathy, wishing there was a cloned Yeong that could love her back.

Same with YS.

We feel for the victims of unrequited love.

Oh!! this was such an episode of tenderness....Loved reading this too. Javabeans, Thank you, :). Those kids are talented. Nay! Very Talented. Still in awe of the warmth that comes through in someone so young. Now, off to watch episode 14.

I noticed something weird, and wonder if others noticed too - When Ra on touches the sleeping Prince, and the focus shows just the hand, I noticed that it isnt Ra On's Hand...She's got long fingers with fingernails that are sort of longish while the hand that was on close focus had short nails @ timestamp 51.02.

Maybe she clipped her fingernails? I checked and it looks like Yoo-jung's hand.
