Jang Hyuk, Lee Hana sign on to catch a killer in OCN’s The Voice

Aw man, no Lee Shi-young? I’m a little disappointed that yet another round of casting fell through for OCN’s upcoming crime thriller The Voice, but at least they finally found a leading actress. At this point I hardly care who it is because we’ve been going in circles with this one casting story for weeks. It was a much easier road to find a lead actor, as Jang Hyuk (Beautiful Mind) has accepted the offer to star. Meanwhile, offers initially went out to Bae Doo-na, Chun Woo-hee, and then Lee Shi-young to play the female lead, but in the end the part went to Lee Hana (Unkind Women, High School King of Savvy), who has officially signed on.

The new crime thriller comes from PD Kim Do-hyuk of I Love Lee Tae-ri and writer Ma Jin-won of I Am Legend and Save the Last Dance for Me, and tells the story of police officers who work at the 112 emergency call center, who have both lost their loved ones at the hands of a serial killer. Jang Hyuk plays a former star detective who became broken after losing his wife, and ends up transferred to the precinct with the lowest crime rate in the entire country, where he works as a first-responder.

He becomes obsessed with finding his wife’s killer and turns into a monster, and while chasing down every lead, he meets Lee Hana’s character, and discovers a hidden secret to the case. Lee Hana plays a police officer who was working at the emergency call center the night that a gruesome murder took place, and when her police sergeant father was dispatched to investigate it, she was on the phone and heard him die at the scene.

She’s described as a tough character with excellent martial arts skills, who’s often underestimated because of her appearance. She’s gifted with perfect psychoacoustics, and can tell the difference between the meows of street cats — it’s a skill she turns into a specialization as a “voice profiler,” and she becomes a team leader at the call center where she uses her abilities to listen for clues in solving cases.

Together they’ll team up against the serial killer who took their loved ones, and in the process they’ll discover the true meaning of their jobs. Well I can already picture Jang Hyuk with the crazy eyes in obsessed killer-chasing mode, that’s for sure. It’ll be a bigger departure for Lee Hana, who never really excites me as an actress; but maybe an action role will bring out a side of her that changes my mind.

The Voice is preparing to air in January on OCN.

I agree. Nothing against Lee Hana but coming from the possibility of Bae Doona and Chun Woo Hee to her is just a let down. Chun Woo Hee in particular would have been great!

I'm not familiar with the actress but I did enjoy Jang Hyuk in Fated to Love You. The plot also reminds me of I Remember You so I might pick it up since I love crime stories.

I don't know why a lot of people don't like Lee Hana. Personally I liked her since Alone in Love and really love her portrayal in High School King. So I'll give this drama a try.

Well, she's a woman... and people (sadly, mostly other women) will dislike her for whatever reason they create... Meanwhile, the most bland, cartoonish and just plain bad actor/ideol will be loved and people will defend him at any cost.

See: Kim Kibum, Ok Taecyeon, Lee Soo Huyk (the vampire-like guy), Kim WooBin who plays the same role over and over again (but oppa has been typecasted!!!11) and tons of other guys...

Sadly, here in DB there are A LOT of people lie this (and from both sides...)

Still, DB is a good source for info (if you don't read the comments tho)

I don't think you're giving us fans enough credit. I do understand that people tend to be more bias towards actors they like personally, sometimes on a superficial note, but I think that can be with both male and female actors. I'm not a fan of Lee Hana simply because I wasn't crazy about her style of acting in HSKoS, not because she's a girl. I think Hyeri and Taecyeon and Suzy and L are all absolutely gorgeous, but that doesn't mean I will refuse to acknowledge their flaws when it comes to their acting abilities.
Basically, it's human nature to be a little subjective sometimes, but that doesn't mean we're willfully ignorant about our 'oppas' and their weaknesses. Not always, anyway. xD
And hey now, Lee Soo Hyuk and Kim Woo Bin are hardly 'bland'! Sure, they're not exactly veterans, but they are both talented! Lee Soo Hyuk (my precious vampire puppy) rocked it in SWWTH, and Kim Woo Bin's latest drama was hardly a fun watch, but you've got to admit his acting was pretty heart-wrenching.
Then again, those two (spesh the former) are MY biases, so I'm not the most reliable critic in this case. xD

She's not bad and quite cute in High School King of Savvy, c'mon ppl don't hate her becos of her awkward/unique role in this drama, cos her role was made like that by the writer, somebody who have poor posture, no confidence and quite awkward in social situations, don't really doll up etc....I actually think that SIG and her chemistry was great....I love their kiss scenes actually...hahaha....not all female leads have to be pretty as heaven...Just like in Pretty Ugly/She Was Pretty and etc...the female leads were made average looking but their hearts were kind and they have good personality....

I am glad the casting for the leads is finalized but I do wonder why it was so hard to find a female lead. I am not familiar with Lee Hana but I am for new actresses to expend their repertoire. If it is her first action drama/ movie, I wish her luck and hope she will be convincing in the role. We`ll see.

I so much disliked Lee Ha Na in High school king of savvy. Her weird embarrassing character just made me drop the show halfway. Seriously. I havent watched any of her other works, so dont know whether she is good or bad actress.

However, still am disappointed with the casting of female lead. I had high hopes like Ha Ji Won, or Kim hye soo to do this type of role.

Same goes for me, as much as I tried to watch it for the crazily adorable SIG, I ended up dropping the series. I guess I couldn't really see LHN's charm in that drama :c

Also, am I the only one that feels somewhat uncomfortable looking at LHN's posture? I feel like she's always slightly hunched when standing.... Or maybe she was just playing her character.

Me too. She was just socially awkward, I just couldn't see him falling in love her. I wanted to scream at her walk straight. Loved king of high school, but didn't like the romance. I'm sure she is a fine actress but her character was grating in this.

Well, maybe I will still give this drama a try for a few episodes... hope she will change my mind in this.

I may be thinking of another drama but wasn't the main character supposed to be a woman when Bae Doona was considering the role until it was suddenly changed to a male character? Then Jang Hyun was quickly cast and it took much longer to secure a female lead. I really wish the writer had (or maybe was allowed to) stick with their original script idea.

Required fields are marked *

I have mixed feelings because of the comments about the female lead, because I dearly want Jang Hyuk to have a good and well received drama.
And I was puzzled because some people in the previous post were commenting that some of the stronger female actresses should avoid signing on since the drama will be focused on Jang Hyuk. (Or maybe I misunderstood?)

Anyway hope that Lee Hana's character turns out to be as bad ass as she sounds on paper- because the description sounds pretty cool. Just don't neuter her half way through, ok drama?

I think the general opinion is that since JH has signed on, the drama will refocus on his character instead, and hence it'll be very difficult to get those Chungmuro actresses on board. I suspect that this may be the reason why the role changed hands so many times, but it may also be the script, or just OCN. I don't think I've seen a female centric drama from OCN, unlike tvN and JTBC, and that may be the reason why female actors may be a little apprehensive about taking up the role.

Required fields are marked *

Bae Doona and CHun Won Hee are both chungmuro actresses. Unless there is strong script in their hand, it is hard to see them in dramaland.

Jang Hyuk is awesome , and this drama since it is on OCN probably will be more male-centric drama. I do think, established and A-list actress like Ha Ji Won, Kim Hye Soo (just mention few names that people have pointed out to be possible female lead) probably won't want to be outshone by Jang Hyuk. It will be different if both male and female parts are equal. But with OCN, I don't know. They tend to focus more on male centric drama. That's my opinion.

Since it is most likely will be male centric drama, I don't mind with Lee Ha Na. She was never impressed me with anything but who knows she will suit this role.

ohhh......no lee si young.....I am dissappointed......
But while I am not a fan of any of the actors, I really like Crime thrillers...I am on board.
I would have liked to watch lee si young in this role, bcoz none of her roles were REALLY badass, I liked her in beautiful bride but almost all of the lime light was on the actor (well of course she wasnt the heroine) and golden cross also was a nice political drama however most of the action was carried out by kim kang woo and si young was in Poseidon too but even my love for her wasn't enough to make me endure it. Now I will have to wait for her new movie, Midsummer.

I like the cast, JH is an amaizing actor and LHN does well for me.

And the premise may sound just like another 1000 dramas, but, hey! nobody is complaining abut the plucky or candy heroine and the chaebol/brooding guy plot used over and over and over again...

Oh, I think we are; there is plenty of grumbling about chaebols, Candys, geeeeniuses, evil female second leads, and the rest, around here. However, I have learnt that there is very little connection between the formula plots that we are given during the promotions stage, and the tone and quality of the final product. I like Jang Hyuk far more than a lot of his latest dramas, and I have nothing for or against Lee Hana, so I will wait until the show has started to decide whether it is worth a try...

I don't get how an actress could be rejected or dismissed just because of one role.

Actors aren't the characters they play and not surprisingly can even play very different characters from one project to the others.
Also the quality of the acting depends heavily on the quality of the writing and the directing (the PD plays a big part in the acting choices).

Especially in k-dramaland where female characters are clearly not given the same treatment than their male counterpart. Personally i think that Seo In Gook was very much blessed/spoiled in High School King of Savvy: he got the best parts to play (i adored him nonetheless).

So i don't think it's fair to affirm that because she was once "bad", she will always be "bad".

I was initially confused a lot by Lee Hana's character because i couldn't understand why she has to be so often humiliated, only to make the show more "funny".

However i liked that the drama never treated her like a doll who only needed a makeover to become the ideal girlfriend: her awkardness and bad posture, her lack of fashion sense, and inability to socially fit in were kept intact until the very end to prove that if love helped her to grow and to develop confidence, it wasn't an overnight transformation but a slow process which required from her a lot of work.

I think she had an excellent chemistry with Seo In Gook: i still can't watch his new show because i can't accept him with another female lead. That's how good they were together.
