Drama viewership ratings for the week of Mar. 20-26, 2017

It’s a bit sad to see Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People’s viewership dropping, though it also would be safe to say that Defendant coming to an end this week (at a whopping 28.3%) may have influenced every other show in the time slot. Next week will be sure to shake things up, though it’s unlikely to help the flagging Perfect Wife, which seems doomed to its relatively meager numbers.

The Liar and His Lover took over the spot previously occupied by Introverted Boss over on tvN, which wasn’t the best lead-in it could’ve hoped for. Its numbers actually dropped between its first and second episodes, but just barely—maybe it’ll just take some trust on the part of the viewers before we see those numbers go up (if they will). The execs over at tvN must have short fingernails by now.

At least Radiant Office saw a small climb this week, while Chief Kim continued to dominate. New kid on the block Tunnel started over the weekend in the slot Voice left vacant, and netted a fairly impressive 2.8%, while poor Tomorrow With You pulled in the kinds of numbers that will be swiftly forgotten by everyone at tvN tomorrow. Alas, you can’t win ’em all.

I'm rooting for it too, but objectively, I don't think it will. It's lacking hype. Which is a shame because I'm enjoying it the most after Chief Kim. I hope it doesn't drop below 1%. If I'm wrong, then I'll be happier than anybody but I'm trying to set my expectations low.

Do Bong-soon is still my happy pill of the week, so I'm happy to see it pull a good ratings even when the plot meander a bit this week.

The pilot episode of Tunnel is quite good. Not really impressive yet, but we still haven't touch the time-traveling aspect yet... So we'll see how it turn out to be.

@Sera - waiting may be a smart move. I thought the first episode of Tunnel was riveting, and was ready to jump into episode 2 (except that episode 2 wasn't ready for me).

Now when I 'marathoned' a drama, I will think of it as completing one!

So I started to re- pick up You're Too Much from epi 7, after left it around epi 2. I am curious about Jang Hee Jin's performance. Not sure how the netizens reacted, but many fans (especially Gu Hye Sun's fans) complaining about the changes - something expected but hopefully I won't see the complainers anymore next week onwards. I mean if you watch drama because certain actor/actress, but then he/she is no longer there, no one forcing you to continue with the drama. So be smart, why waste around 50 hours of your life for someting you hate, just leave the drama unless if you are already invested with the drama.

In one aspect, I am glad I stopped watching it before, because the story is too melo and it is long drama - i really need the actors I truly love to invest my time with it. Uhm Jung Hwa alone is not enough. So with Jang Hee Jin onboard, I think I can follow this drama until the end.

I abandoned my previous ship after Jang Hee Jin joined, I am seriously shipping Kyung Soo and Hae Dang now. Funny, I used like Hae Dang and Hyung Joo before Gu Hye Sun had unfortunately leave. I know fans will complain a bit but it truly is not anyone's fault. They can't stop filming a 50 episode weekend drama for a cast falling sick. As unfortunate as it is, this is business and the show must go on.

I dont actually remember everyone's name yet. So the blind guy is Kyung Soo or Hyung Joo? I love Hae Dang and Jung Gye Woon's character. But this guy is married right? Maybe I need to rewatch from beginning, or maybe after Jae Hee's death. I just watched here and there especially when JH's around because I just unable to see Jae Hee as a cheater ?

You are right, the situation is unfortunate but what can be done. This drama cannot be stopped out of sudden.

I can understand why you changed ships because Hee Jin now playing Hae Dang and Hyung Joo no longer have chemistry. It was Hye Sun's version of Hae Dang that had great chemistry with him. Now the characters seem like younger oppa and older noona. I have to admit that I liked the chemistry with both males with Hye Sun but more with Hyung Joo. The new hae Dang looks better with Kyung Soo, although I miss the funny bickering they had in the previous episodes.

Your second paragraph about needing to love the actors in order to invest, basically explains why so many KHS fans left the drama and are not happy. See it would happen to you too with an actress or actor you loved which left you with ones you do not care for. Anyway, I am a KHS fan and I do like her acting in this drama, but I like a lot of other actresses too and I find new ones to like all the time. But for me JHJ in this role left me disappointed and I lost interest in the drama after watching ep 7 and 8. But I do want to see what happens with the Singer and Hyung Joo's mother/son relationship. I will most likely fast forward to only their scenes.

My hunch is that KBS2, SBS and MBC are airing variety shows during those times, and viewers may tend to choose them over SWDBS. They may watch the Friday's episode repeats on Saturday Morning/Afternoon (Its repeats rate around 2-3%, mind you.

OT: I'm referring to the pressure that they are getting from Samsung and the current government. They exposed the Choi Soon Shil gate, which kicked out South Korea's President. Also, the CEO of JTBC is a relative of Samsung's big wig who was also jailed because of the scandal.

Name is Radiant Office but the show is quite depressive. I don't think this show will go beyond 7-8% mark. This is the period where lot of -ve stuff is dished out as entertainment so any comedy show will do good and this is one of the reason of Chief Kim's success. 3rd will be the real test of this show.
Let's see Lair breaks through 2% mark or not. I don't think it will.

Tunnel is refurbished version of a few japanese dramas but it think it will touch 5% mark. 3% start is quite good one.

Tomorrow with you - wow. That heroine stopped her photography practice after the marriage? Anything happened related to her professional life or not.

Required fields are marked *

Yeah this week's ratings are pretty positive for them. Let's hope for 8% mark or even 10% mark! I tend to support the underdog so it breaks my heart when a show that should have higher ratings due to better story etc can't achieve them. Chief Kim already proved it, so it isn't a mission impossible after all.

0

I am watching Radiant Office and reading recaps for Chief Kim.

While I am not surprised by Radiant Office's ratings, I find that I can't apply the same reasons to Chief Kim. Chief Kim's ratings are quite unexpected for this genre. What worked for Chief Kim and why didn't it work for Radiant Office?

0

Chief Kim feels very different from the recaps. A lot of the humor, silliness, and vibe of the show is lost in the recapping. I appreciate recaps, but they don't work for every show, and shows like Chief Kim are the ones with the biggest disconnect. (I love watching Chief Kim. It's wackiness is right up my alley!)

0

@kanz yes hopefully. Chief Kim proved it, so I believe Radiant can do the same too. Please continue to be good drama next week!

@ET Chief Kim was also started with low rating around 6%. Most of us (including myself) expected CK would be another victim competing with giant competitor i. e Saimdang because Saimdang is a comeback drama of Lee Young Ae. Then Saimdang failed to maintain their viewers, and they went to Chief K instead (because Missing 9 also failed to captivate viewers' hearts).
The difference between these two drama although both are office drama, the tone are different. CK has tons of humorous than Radiant. Radiant while has some funny parts too, it is a bit serious than CK. On the rating, CK has more advantage because it started earlier imo. That's why next week's episodes are crucial for Radiant, in order to gain some CK's viewers after CK ended later.

0

The gloominess of tv media helped Chief Kim a lot. Current Social environment is not pleasant either. And this is a show where bad guys are exponentially bad in whatever they do and are easily trolled so anyone wishing to watch a superhero minus underwear over pants was attracted towards it. Humour did job well.

Radiant Office forces depressive state of heroine too much. I don't think it will grab much of Chief Kim's Audience.

0

@Mommai I am aware that reading recaps for a drama like Chief Kim cannot replace actual watching. When I reach a part which is funny, I will go and watch the particular scene. I know it's weird but I have this inexplicable need to hang on to this drama despite not feeling it much.

@Sera, I think you have explained well possibly why Chief Kim's ratings are so different from Radiant Office. To be fair, although I don't get it, Chief Kim must be doing things right to get their ratings because lack of competition doesn't fully explain ratings above 15%. Mystery Queen is after CK and it does look interesting from the teasers. I wish Radiant Office would rise to a respectable figure or rather a figure it deserves. I hope for the best for Mystery Queen too if it proves to be good.

0

@ET you are definitely right. The reason is not because lack of competition per se, this drama has the consistency from the beginning until the end (I believe the last two episodes will do the same as well). In this regard, I will praise the writer because he knows what he want to write. This show is not flawless in term of accountancy/ corporate matters, and I must say, if viewers want to see their actual works per dept, it may not that much. But the writer doing a good job in focusing what audiences want to see- the jokes, relationship between Chief Kim and his co- workers, and how they fight for themselves against the higher ups- all are relatable and this drama is consistent at that. Not to mention the writer is doing a good job as well in writing all characters - not only focusing at one or two main characters. Even the mere supporting casts like cleaning lady in this company has some good role.

Sorry for a very long comment. lol. ?

0

Just to add Namgoong Min's own thoughts on why ratings are good: “It’s not hard to watch; viewers can enjoy it without thinking much, which I think is why it gained attention,” he said. “The atmosphere at the studio is very bright and lively. All of the actors are filming with smiles on their faces, and I think viewers are somehow able to feel that.” :)

i have to say Radiant Office is kind of boring. I hope it picks up soon.

The recent melodrama mostly ended with a good ending or not so tragic ending. Unless terminal illness drama but Marriage Contract last year at least didn't show death at the end - so I think it is still happy ending. Other melodrama last year - like Goodbye Mr Black was also happy ending (if my memory serves me right), On The Way To Airport -happy or maybe open ending. What else?

It's actually a better written (and smart) drama than most.

But like everywhere, quality dramas don't always get the audience they deserve (plenty of highly regarded shows never got the ratings in the US and other well written shows like "BuffytVS" only achieved cult status instead of becoming major hits).

It's not a drama you can watch NOT from the start. And this PD always makes his (?) drama's tone quite bleak in artistic way. His last 2 dramas (OMG and Savvy) has strong comedic touch in the writing so the melancholy tone doesn't translate to gloomy like this drama. Not to say this drama is bad because the story is def intriguing and everyone in the team should be proud that they are making high quality drama, but this may works better in shorter span like a movie.

Talking about shorter dramas, does anyone knows what's the rating and Knet reception for the Color of the Universe series?

I can see your point about doing it in a shorter format like a movie, however, what I appreciated about this longer format is the really good character development we got for So Joon and Ma Rin along the way. I think the payoff we got in the end was worth the long road to get there.

I don't think there is anything wrong with SK. Most of the people there just don't find the story appealing and don't think about it. Comments from those who watch it seem to be positive overall.

I think the low ratings is due to a combination of factors:
1. the pacing and direction is very different from what is familiar in kdramas.
2. With the political turmoil happening in SK now, people need more familiarity and certainty. Even catharsis. Probably why Defendant and Chief Kim are doing well. You can safely assume that Ji Sung's character and Chief Kim will win at the end, but there is no such guarantee for our Marin and So Joon. For most of the drama, the antagonist is this vague, mysterious fate. there wasn't a definite bad guy until halfway through the drama.
3. Story had mostly been leaning towards "you can't change fate no matter how hard you try" which doesn't make for a hopeful watch.
4. First episode wasn't that good. I'm glad I stuck around for episode 2 or else I wouldn't have continued this wonderful gem of a drama.
5. And bad ratings feed into bad ratings. If you think you may not be interested in the story and you notice that the ratings dropped after the first week, you may not think TWY is worth your time to try it out. Usually if ratings up, you'd give it a second chance.
6. And like Boomboompow says, it's not a story you can just jump right into and catch up on what's happening unless you start from the very beginning. Part of the fun and intrigue is trying to trace the timeline.

All these things.

And it really is not a easy watch. I have been having a very hectic couple of weeks and I just couldn't bring myself to watch that show. I just didn't have the mental energy to invest in it. So I have kept it on hold and am avoiding spoilers/comments. Despite being a big fan of the show and they way the characters are portrayed. 'Its so real it hurts' - which is why I loved the show and which is why am putting it on hold now.

Comparatively, watching swdbs is the easiest thing in the world. That is a very problematic show with many jokes and characters making me deeply uncomfortable but the leads have all the charm in the world. For the last couple of weeks, I have been skipping every scene except the leads and the gangsters(they do make me lol a lot).

And am even happy to rewatch scenes in YT before going to sleep.

TWY is a show that would do much better as marathon. I am in mood for some philosophical fate/destiny crap this weekend - then TWY would be the best/favorite show ever.

As usual pretty easy ride for the heroine. Whether its hero or Heroine it always goes this way. Just pick a hobby and listen few rude words from unknown characters here and there get sympathy from the audience and then in a matter of few episodes become Immature artist to a professional. That's why every noone sing songs these days or launch their own bands or start to claim themsevles as actors.

Actually, it's no one's fault. The drama itself is just not exciting enough for most people. Not to say it has a bad story, though. It's a thought-provoking show, watching it almost feels like reading a motivational book. That's why some people might find it depressing. It's just never meant to be popular in the first place. Even popular cast can't boost its ratings. At least the show didn't get a cut/rewrite like Introverted Boss (I still think they shouldn't have rewritten that drama. The plot got ruined after that). I personally don't care about low ratings as long as it didn't affect the story itself.

Lols.. Even in some international sites, it wasnt even a hit. For example, in db's recap... Comparing to dbs which got 2times more than twy, we know who's more popular. So, do you think, it's still the problem with S.K viewers' taste????

Plus, it's weekend. People mostly dont watch drama like this. Family or comedy romance like dbs are their fave. Um.. Probably, some thriller will do.

Sighing @ the Liar and his Lover ratings. I must be bad luck or something. Why do almost every dramas I enjoy more from the first week end up with low ratings. Well, almost. I know the feeling. Funny enough though, I'm not the biggest fan of SWDBS and it's been kinda tough for me to get back into CK--I have to catch up before Wednesday though, sigh. I'm on the fence with LaHL. TWY was my most recent low ratings gem.

Even though many of our favourites get low ratings, I appreciate that they even see the light of day to begin with. We need that diversity. What's more, I appreciate that in some cases the cast and crew stand firm behind their work when they don't get amazing ratings--WFKBJ. I think that speaks to the subjective fact that these shows aren't bad, just not everyone's cup of tea. In my case, I've watched sooo much TV in my life that I now appreciate shows that I can relate to or are different enough from the many I've seen before so as to keep my attention.

PS: TLAHL is such a hard acronym to write, or is it only me? :P

I also am tempted to write thahl each time because that's how I pronounce it in the head.

Strong Woman Do Bong-soon almost reached 1O%!! Wow!

Tunnel's premiere episode was solid. Not gory like Voice (...yet, but I doubt it will reach that level of violence). I still liked it and I'm looking forward to the next episode. Glad the debut rating was good. ^^

I agree with you on Tunnel. I like the pacing in the two episodes so far. The time travel aspect is also quite mysterious. How does it work?

Why are people surprised with low ratings for Tomorrow with you? Its too depressing and melancholy without any definite answer of how ending will be. It clearly doesnt fit majority's pallatte. I dropped it after six episodes. It was too yawning for me. I mean I love the two actors but even my love for them couldnt convince me to continue this snoozefest.

Agree, I'm so tired when always see comments complain about ratings.. Well not everyone love every drama.

The next one you will see possibly on Liar and His Lover if the rating won't get higher next week. ?

I dont mind the rating that much, I love TWY but it is understandable on the low rating. And this is not the first time my fav show got low rating.

I agree that TWY is not for everyone's taste but one cannot say the show doesn't give 'any definite answer of how the ending will be'.The final was as exactly as I knew it would be if you carefully follow the clues given there and then.

I watched it until ep 5 and just kind of stopped. That doesn't mean I'll drop the drama. I'll go back and watch it whenever I feel like it. It's not terrible. It's interesting and raises my interests in why the father is weird (father has some secrets) & what will happen to each sister in their love and career paths. What I love about this drama is the family and their love for one another. Both parents are loving and affectionate towards the kids. The siblings are there for each other despite their differences in personalities and views. They fight but they make up in the end. I just kind of stop watching it because I'm just bad at commitment. To the show: "it's not you but me". I'll still continue to watch it (maybe when they have air 6 more episodes so I can just marathon all of it at once without having to wait).

Bottom Line: I like it. Definitely give it a try. First two episodes did a nice job of introducing the family and gives you a heads up of what the drama is going to be.

If you are not into makjang family drama, this drama is the one for you. The entire show is filled with heart and love. Everyone in the family has their own distinct characteristics, and everyone is so lovable.

Since nobody else will, I am just going to tip my hat to Defendant, the biggest hit since Descendants of the Sun.

Curiously a show with almost no hype in the English speaking kdrama community.

I love when my fave got high rating. Swdbs and ck. But then, radiant office, aigoooo...

On hold : twy, defendant. I dunno, but both has the same level of depression haha. I got depressed watching them.

Im in the mood for comedy dramas.

And please, dont judge or blame viewers' taste just bcuz they are different from yours... Preference dear. Accept it. If everyone has the same taste, then we will love the same person. Imagine how messy it can be. Lol. So, lets respect each other's preference. Cheers.

Why did I not notice this before? Defendant will be followed by Whisper which stars Ji Sung's wife Lee Bo-Young. That is kinda awesome. Hopefully her drama will do well also (though I doubt it will hit the amazing numbers Defendant hit). Maybe Defendant's success can carry over to Whisper. It will be like Ji Sung's gift to Lee Bo-Young.

The ratings for You Are Too Much dropped this week for both Saturday and Sunday compared to last week.

So happy SWDBS climbed even higher this week, breaking the already broken JTBC record. I'm waiting for them to go past 10%!!
