Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching

So, what are we all watching this week?

What kept you reaching for more (or agonizing when there was no more), and what made you want to throw your remote through the screen? Time to weigh in…

javabeans

Currently recapping: Hwayugi

I’m Not a Robot: These two actors are so amazing at emoting that I find myself completely immersed in their feelings even while knowing, on the logical surface level, that this plot is fantastical and absurd. But they sell the heartache and longing so well! I cried a lot more than I thought I would this week, even though the plot itself was a little over-the-top (I mean, “I’m in love with a robot” is no “I don’t care if you’re an alien” on the angst-realism scale, but I still felt his pain!).

Black Knight: Honestly, I’m not sure what it is about this show that keeps me watching. It’s probably a lot to do with the offerings being miiiighty slim right now. But I do like that even though sometimes it’s mundane and dull, sometimes it does have an unpredictable quality that means that I never know where this show is going (although sometimes that’s just because it’s random), and it occasionally throws out shit so weird and unexplained that you have to admire it for attempting something. I… don’t know what they were actually attempting, but you know what, an attempt was made. Kudos for that.

I’m Not a Robot: Yoo Seung-hooooooo, you make me cry so! What a great way to use the amnesia trope, with the reset and separation. The level of melo in this drama is just right for me—it’s emotional in the moment but never frustrating, because I know it’s temporary and there’s a happy upturn just waiting around the bend.

Two Cops: I wish the central mystery would move faster. It’s just so… unmysterious, and I’d really rather spend my time watching Jo Jung-seok play two characters and be confusingly swoony as both cop and con man. More hijinks, please!

Jugglers: I really like the relatively low-angst start to this romance. They’re just realistic people, and super adorable and geeky about basically everything. When he bought her fuzzy bunny slippers to match his fuzzy panther slippers, I just wanted to pinch their cheeks.

chickachunga

Just Between Lovers: This is the only show I’m watching at the moment, and I really do like it. I love the melancholy tone, the beautiful direction, and the moody music. Junho has consistently turned in impressive performances, and he’s unsurprisingly a capable lead in this, playing a guy with a chip on his shoulder who’s still haunted by a tragic accident that upended his life forever. Won Jin-ah may be a rookie actress, but you wouldn’t be able to tell from her subtle, naturalistic acting. I’m already a fan of this talented new face and will definitely keep an eye out for her. This love story of two broken individuals who fit like two puzzle pieces isn’t a reinvention of the wheel, but it’s a sufficiently pleasant and satisfying watch. Also, Na Moon-hee’s in this, and who doesn’t love her sass?

mary

Smart Prison Living: I’m up to Episode 6 and Je-hyuk is the dumbest, purest, most earnest character I’ve seen in a K-drama lately. No wonder everyone is a member of the Je-hyuk Protection Squad. Anyone who tells you otherwise is in denial. Yeah, I’m looking at you, Lt. Paeng!

Just Between Lovers: I’m on Episode 2 and it feels so slow, but only because I’ve been spoilered to death and just want our two damaged puppies to meet properly. Also for someone to tell them it’s okay to move on, be happy with the family you have left, or ask for help if need be. It hurts to watch them do this half-existence thing they’ve been doing for years. Things will be better, right? Right?

tipsymocha

Black Knight: I’m usually averse to spoilers, but I’m really glad I started this late and read the backstory behind what ties our main couple and the two immortal ladies together, because I would’ve given up early otherwise. I went into this show not really looking to root for the main couple, since I’ve yet to see Shin Se-kyung in a root-worthy coupling, but I actually think the two leads work well together here. The rest of the side characters I could do without, especially the ridiculous aunt and the thug-boss-baddie. As a whole, I’m not sure what I was expecting with this show, but I certainly wasn’t expecting the comedy, intended or otherwise. It’s a welcome surprise, especially in our largely ineffectual second lead. I mostly find her funny (instead of aggravating) because she’s got no chance in hell of being a serious contender for Kim Rae-won’s affections, but even then, I do feel conflicted about liking her since she was one of the most despicable brats in Joseon I’ve ever seen on screen and she doesn’t seem to feel much remorse for her past actions. That said, I’m kinda starting to wish for her and the fake-prosecutor-turned-trainer ex to have their own little loveline ‘cause they’re hilarious together.

Juts between lovers!
The lead girl who is a rookie-but-appears-not-to-be-a-rookie is just too good. Indeed her acting is so natural that at a point if you only focus on her you'll think its a documentary / looking into her life rather than it being an act for a drama. Every one is pulling in their weight and doing an awesome job.
She and Junho together is like green on a leaf - just perfect and right😊
Yoon se-ah , I remove my cap for her - great acting once again. I dunno what to think of her character exactly but her portrayal of it is too excellent for me to even bother. I hope this drama consistently gets better🤞 and hopefully have more staff members watching it and letting us know what they think(javabeans and girlfriday🙃)

We had visitors over New Year so I watched Youth Over Flowers: Africa when there was time. Essential items - car, SIM card with 1 gb data. Non-essential items - cool box, knife!
After the break I watched Just Between Lovers ❤️ and I'm not a Robot ❤️. I started both of these rather casually. "Oh Junho's in that. He was really good in Chief Kim. I'll give it a go." "Ah. Robot mix-ups. That sounds like a laugh. I might watch that." Needless to say I'm hooked and loving them both.
I also managed a couple of films this week:
A Taxi Driver was powerful and so moving showing us the bravery of ordinary people.
Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Inferno had our hero reluctantly picking up his sword to fight evil. It ended on a real cliffhanger too so now I'll have to watch the last in the trilogy fairly quickly.
I also managed to watch Binggoo (the haircuts and the miniskirts!) and start Avengers' Social Club which is awesome.

Just Between Lovers
Very slow, but I don't mind. I have been watching just casually.

I'm Not a Robot
Jiah made me cry even more than Min kyu... but they both made me suffer this week.
And I actually liked that she couldn't tell him yet. It was somehow realistic (in the frame of its setting) that they couldn't tell him, and that there had to be some kind of noble idiocy, because it is justified by so much they love Min Kyu, sooo much she loves him, she cannot tell him or be with him anymore.
And even though now she found him, I don't think she would tell right away... I am afraid they will play a cat catching a mouse for a while, and impressively, I will understand again why. It is desperate and sad, but I get it, and that is how I stay put in this story. At least, at the very end, we will have a happy end, at least for them... 😊 I know that.

I'm not a robot: YSH and CSB really knows how to make you feel their pain. But I still miss the lighthearted humor from early on. I also like that the second lead girl is not the typical unlikeable SL.

Jugglers: I'm really liking this despite it's faults. It's an easy watch with its likeable characters and sprinkling of humor.

I dunno, I think in an angst-realism scale, i’d rate robot as much more angstier than alien 😂 I mean, falling in love with a scrap piece of mental mounded into a human looking thing by a scientist, then having to believe every moment you spent with that metal (no matter how real to you) is actually fake and all power of ‘deep-learning’ and ‘input’. I mean... everyone who knows me knows my favourite drama ever has to be YFAS just for sheer feels, but robot-Jia is soooo much more angstier than alien-Min-joon.

Or am I just a victim of the moment? 😂 I wouldn’t put it past me because I’m currently obsessed with this one. It’s swallowing me whole! Lol.

I completely agree with your angst-realism scale. An alien could actually have feelings and love you back. A robot is programmed and therefore the feelings wouldn't be as real.

Just Between Lovers is one of those dramas that remind us of why kdrama tropes are so popular. Because when it's well executed, we don't really want things to happen any other way. 8 episodes on, and I still think what separates this drama from becoming a cliche is the sincerity that we can feel through it. From the cinematography to the writing and acting, there's an earnest quality that shines through and I really love that.

Even the dreaded noble idiocy that's coming up is done in a way that's so perfectly in character that you don't really expect for it to happen differently. Gangdoo is so broken and has such a low opinion of himself that I would personally think it's out of character of him not to be a noble idiot. And instead of it being a plot point, I hope that it's used in a way that it becomes a catalyst for both leads to ultimately heal and come back together. But we'll see how it goes next week, fingers crossed.

Yes, the tropes are so well executed and you got it exactly with Gangdoo's so broken it isn't really noble idiocy. Fingers crossed too!

very well said! also agrees about tropes. Tropes done well is always good. And I love the role reversal in this drama. I love how Moon soo is the one who drives (a truck at that), put on the seatbelt, and so on. It just feels sincere and real with them.

Didn't expect this much chemistry <3

Nothing to lose - all the hugs for Han Joon. His and Jung Joo's storylines are both tragic, but for some reason - Dong Ha's spectacular acting perhaps - his pain is so much more poignant. Don't really understand why they painted Assemblyman Do to be pure evil then slip in a loving-husband-who-went-about-everything-wrong depiction in these last few eps. This doesn't count as a multi-layered antagonist right? Am I supposed to feel sorry for him now?? because I still don't!

Untouchable - for the few beanies watching this, maybe you could help me understand why Gi Seo suddenly seemingly cares for Ja Gyeong? Is he genuinely afraid she'll leave him even though he knows she doesn't care for him one bit?

Just Between Lovers - the thumbnail loaded before the title of this post, and for a split second, I had this inane hope that recaps for this masterpiece were finally being posted. Oh well, time to re-watch from the beginning while waiting for the next ep.

Doubtful Victory - saw ddakji's death coming, but not the fact that he kept me watching this show. Lost all motivation to continue this drama sighhhhss

Its new for me to be watching 5 dramas at the same time (Jugglers, JBLovers, INRobot, B Knight and Hwayugi) I was watching 2Cops but the con man was annoying and I didn't like Hyeri acting and no chemistry with Jo Jung-seok so I had to drop this drama. Black Knight is odd and has so many WTF moments. I confess that I skip a lot of parts and what make me still watch this is the second lead, I think she is funny haha I also want to know what is going on with Hae-Ra (Shin Se Kyung) aunt... seems that she is not her real aunt...weird.

First time with a lot of drama that had picked my interest. I'm so damn happy.

Got caught up on eps 5-8 of Just Between Lovers and there's just something magical about this drama. Everything works so well, especially the relationships. I was a *little* hesitant to watch ep 8, because some of the shows I've watched throw angst at you in the most frustrating ways, but it's handled well.

Also I'm debating whether to jump into INAR or save it for binge-watching. Silly, fluffy adorableness is my catnip! To heck with this Tilda person though.

Besides the 4 shows that I've mentioned before and will only list here (Just Between Lovers, I Am Not a Robot, Jugglers and Hwayugi) without going into detail and repeating what many of us are saying... I caught a 1 hour 6 minute drama special and found it touching. Pretty true to life and young relationships.

If We Were a Season starring Chae Soobin, Jang Dongyoon and Jinyoung.

Pretty good production values, simple tale, very focussed and well acted. A bit open ended and sweetly melancholy but not overdone.

Just thought I'd mention it and recommend it to anyone who wants to watch something short and good.

Yup it was kind of open ended. At age 19, I suppose nothing is settled yet. They would continue as friends and could become more, but that is for another tale.

However the first steps to rapprochement had been made with that goodbye and a hug. Remembering what Hae Rim said about a hug, when Gi Seok chose to give her a tight hug instead of a kiss, it was to denote that their story had not ended yet, which I felt was a good place to be for such youngsters. 😇

Ah, that's what I thought as well (and it was hinted with that earlier scene as you said). It was just hard for me to think how a goodbye that seemed permanent would be the start of the rest of their story, since I assumed she was leaving to be with the other guy (must rewatch now, I forget the details).

She left to take up another year of study in Seoul, because she did not know what to focus on in College yet. She had sucked at sports, (her original goal, goodness knows why), so going into Sports School was out of the question. An extra year was to give her time to decide what to do.

Been in a slump. Gave up on Two Cops and put watching I'm Not a Robot and Jugglers on hiatus.

Wandered over to:
1. a slew of bad Hallmark/ION/ABC/Lifetime Christmas rom-coms
2. Forest of Secrets: A rewatch of random episodes. What a stunning drama! I'm more impressed the second time around.
3. Master's Sun: My rewatch has slowed, but still more adorable than I remembered.
4. Murphy's Law of Love (first 4 episodes of TW drama): Interesting concepts of how people deal with broken romances (the divorce party and auction were pretty funny), but the characters are pretty annoying. I hate the TW rom-com thing where the OTP are actively trying to find a reason to bicker. You're adults!

I am looking forward to continuing Hwayugi (and Jang Geun Seok's cameo!), but the behind-the-scenes stuff has me worried.

Down to last week on Judge v. Judge and it's gotten absurd: a murder trial with the 3-panel judges consisting of a judge whose brother the defendant had framed and murdered, a judge who is a long time family friend, and a judge who is a long time friend. Conflict of interests anyone? Come on!...I let a lot slide in kdrama, but if it wasn't the last week left, I'd drop this. OTOH, enjoying my watch of Money Flower, Oh The Mysterious, Two Cops, Just Between Lovers (!), Untouchable and Man Who Sets The Table. Starting Nirvana In Fire2, only 2 episodes in...so far, so good. Hope Netflix gets Smart Prison Living!

I've wanted to rant about Black Knight all week. My biggest question is why. Why, show, why? Why are there whole segments dedicated to interpretive dancing? Why does Hae Ra not realize that something is even a little bit off about the strange lady she's willing to give all of her personal information to? Why has the plot not progressed at all over the past couple weeks? Why, oh why am I still watching????

My favorites this week were JBL, SPL, and INAR.
Jugglers: Sweet, but I feel like CW had sudden 180 degree change when I wasn't watching. Co-workers' guesses are hilarious.
Two Cops: Can't help to think why plot is so meh. SC could do so much more in his soul form.
Mysterious Il-seung: Is Il-seong really the lead in this show? Everybody else is more interesting than him.
Just Between Lovers: Love. Still sad and beautiful. Ending scene "Are you really ok?" was so good.
I had funny moment- I was watching this Gang-doo pondering scene. After a few minutes I realized the program notice at the bottom of the screen was not scrolling. My screen had been stuck! but I didn't notice because the show had many quiet scenes.lol

Black Knight: Somthing doesn't feel right, but I stay for SJH and JMH scenes.
I'm Not a Robot: Excited for next episode.
Nothing to Lose: What a twist! Poor Dong-ha. I wanted this show to be cute and I won't give up till the end.
Smart Prison Living: Another heart-warming episode. Good as ever.

Because some weekend shows didn't air, I got to watch some other shows-
The Most Beautiful Goodbye: It wasn't as sad as I expected maybe because I knew the plot. I even envied her having time to prepare and loved by family before she died.
Thief-nom, Thief-nim: I was intrigued by the plot in earlier episodes, but plot was dragging later.
And I loved to see Son Seung-Won(Sungmin of Ssong couple in Age of Youth2) in King of the masked singer. So talented.

Now I am going to go watch Money flower,Hwayugi, Bad Guys and Untouchable^^

I'm still catching up on recent (and some not so recent) dramas. Loving While You Were Sleeping and Avengers Social Club. What's with the limited fare right now? Is it seasonal? Does it have to do with the upcoming Olympics? Jugglers- Has a good balance of office drama and romance. Loving the couple here. And co-habitation dramas gives more opportunities for more skinship. But the line of boss and secretary is still something icky, I do hope the writers have a good idea how to smooth it out though i'm sure that Bo Na's boss will have different ideas on their living arrangements.

I'm Not a Robot- So much angst moments for a romcom. I do hope things get better for Min Kyu once he learns Ji AH Aji 3 is also a human.

Mysterious Il Seung is a story of bringing down an ultimate baddie but for this drama is just so addicting in all its crazy antics, I am watching for Yoon Kyun Sang.

Black Knight- echo all of Javabean and tipsymocha words.

Two Cops- halfway thru.Must watch.

Just Between Lovers is great. Understated, moody in a good way, not over-melodramatic, and great acting on all parts. Won Jin-ah really reminds me of Soo Ae, whose acting I love.

Two Cops is hilarious and both cop and conman are great. Jo Jung‑suk is really capturing the mannerisms of the cop and the conman - great job! This is the second drama I have seen conman actor in and he has been great in both.

Black Knight is a dilemma--I tried the first two episodes and just couldn't get into it. Maybe I'll skip a few and see how it goes. I'm a big Kim Rae-won fan, though I am ready to see him in a not suave rich man role. The lead actress just doesn't do much for me, which makes it hard for me to get into the drama. The story line seems like it should have potential with the right actors.

Robot and Juggler are also fun...

I'm still watching TWO COPS and DOUBTFUL VICTORY. After months of live-watching shows with intense and twisty plots, they're relatively low-key. The plots have been kind of draggy, but are finally getting around to back stories and plot progression. Mainly watching for the lead actors. In TWO COPS, Jo Jung-seok and Kim Sun-ho are great together, and Lee Si-un steals the show as Yong-pal. Yoon Kyun-sang could use some of his Mighty Child powers from REBEL after all the crap he's had to endure after being framed in DOUBTFUL VICTORY. I'm enjoying the many veteran actors in that show's cast.

MONEY FLOWER has been great from the start. Manseh, Jang Hyuk! The baddies in this show are relentless, and so is the protagonist. Given some of the things he's done to engineer revenge upon those who killed his parents and brother, I can't help but wonder if there's a Pyrrhic victory in the offing. I'm also watching MAWANG / THE LUCIFER / THE DEVIL, which is a Faustian tale of revenge. This one is intense and metaphorical, with oodles of symbolism. It's a mental workout.

In a lighter vein, I'm enjoying HWAYUGI, which I'm finding very entertaining.

It is my first time writing on Dramabeans, although I have read many reviews and comments for 3 years. English is not my native language and I am sorry not to express myself very well.

Because I am a fan of Park Hyng Sik I watched and rewatched him and Han Ji-min in "Two lights : relumino", such an amazing warm short film (30 minutes) by Hur Jin-ho.
"Insoo (PHS) who is gradually loosing his vision as well as the light of life, meets Sooyoung (HJM), a bright and confident woman in a photography club."
Everyone in the movie is acting great and the OST sung by PHS, which has to be listened until the end, is also so beautiful.

The movie is free online on Youtube and Vlive because it is an ad for Samsung, which developed an app for visually impaired people.
Subtitled in many languages, there are some more english translations on Vlive (text of the supporting actors but with an error at 6:34 - “I can” should be “I can’t”).

Just Between Lovers is a deeply touching and painful exploration of the repercussions of tragedy and how it touches not only those who die, but the survivors, whose lives are forever distorted. Almost every character in the show is suffering in one way or another in the aftermath, and the show depicts their struggles with respect and dignity. We root for LGD and HMS to get together because they can understand each other's wounds in a way no one else can. It's got a beautiful naturalistic style that reminds me of Kame's Japanese drama, Just One Love. JBL is full of compassion and honesty.

Halmoni you’re such a precious being and your metaphorical personifications as well! : “A squirrel has two acorns. He puts one in his own mouth and he saves the other one for the wintertime and he buries it...He works so hard for it, but being so dumb he can’t eat it because he can’t find it. He forgets about it.” “ What a waste…” “It’s a waste.? Rather than being wasteful for a moment the acorn, that was buried underground in the winter, grows leaves, becomes a tree and then makes a forest. Aren’t we so grateful for that? If it’s too hard for you, it is one way to forget everything and bury it. How would you know how it would come out later? In life, it could be blessing in disguise.”

INAR - Yoo Seung Ho is amazing but so is Chae Soo Bin, I don't understand people who say he's carrying the show all on his own, you think we would get crying scenes or chemistry like that if his costar wasn't pulling her weight? We've seen what it's like when his onscreen romances don't work (Imaginary Cat etc)

Why is it so hard to give an actress credit when she actually does well opposite our oppa? Just because she's not a famous child actor or is only a rookie doesn't mean she can't match well or give a great performance (and she's doing a double role too), it's not taking anything away from YSH to acknowledge her skills too.
