Drama viewership ratings for the week of Aug. 12-18, 2019
by SailorJumun
With summer nearly over, it looks like people aren’t tuning into shows quite as much. Monday-Tuesday drama Let Me Hear Your Song hasn’t had the best ratings thus far, but 2.2 percent? For a major network like KBS, that has to be a major disappointment. At least cable shows like A Moment at Eighteen and Designated Survivor are going strong.
The Wednesday-Thursday shows haven’t had the best ratings either, but Rookie Historian is doing just fine around 6 percent. As for the weekend, I was surprised to see numbers for Doctor John go down a bit. After all, it is a medical drama starring Ji Sung — you’d think that would promise consistent double digits. I wasn’t as surprised to see Be Melodramatic’s numbers decrease, but definitely sad. These slice-of-life shows just don’t get enough credit.

Melo Suits Me deserves better ratings! This is a well-directed, well-written, and well-acted show. I hope this underrated show gets the recognition it deserves. Please rise in ratings.

I think that if this was a movie it would have been more successful but I'm glad that PD Lee decided on a drama so it can be more accessible to us.
I enjoyed SUNNY and SCANDAL MAKERS which he wrote. EXTREME JOB was his baby and it almost took the crown of all time highest grossing film from ROARING CURRENTS.
I hope more viewers will tune in and appreciate this talented cast.

6.1% last week and 4.2% on this saturday: Watcher is on fire!
I hope the drama is on its way to break OCN records: it's certainly their best drama ever and their best cast too!

Han Suk-kyu improvising makes my day. I'd watch him chew gum all day lol. The telephone booth scene reminds me of his mind blowing performance in GREEN FISH. Even a high profile director like Lee Chang Dong would trust him to interpret his script without much direction from him.
The rest of the cast deserves to be praised too. My kind of chemistry. No physical contact but you can just feel it.

Do you recommend it for anyone, even those of us that watch rom coms and fusion sageuks for escape, kiara? I want something that will totally engross me and medical, legal, police, mob plots are usually too reality based to do the trick. But some still do so once in a while if people whose opinion I respect like a show, I take the plun ge.

If you can handle the violence the thrills and suspense will keep your pretty little mind engrossed.
It's almost over and I'm still not sure who the real baddie is.

I can't agree more: this man is a miracle. The scenes where he was alone in the room in front of a mirror, just doing his thing, were filled with so much tension. I was expecting anything to happen at any moment without a line of dialogue.
Like the PD of Watcher said, it's an honor to watch him on screen!
It's the best ensemble cast of the year for me:) They stole the spot from Different Dreams!

i wonder why the ratings drastically decreased in past couple of years. Like five years ago, the least viewed drama in a certain timeslot will be 9-10 percent in public channel. Is it because people shifted to internet streaming or people
just don’t watch drama anymore?

I definitely think streaming has a large role to play in this. It's visible all over the world.

I almost never watch anything live as it airs. I stream the vast majority of my entertainment. Honestly, I think the only thing in my house that is watched realtime is Mr. Egads watching some sort of sporting event. So, calculating ratings, and comparing results with those 5-10 years ago, it's not shocking that the numbers have changed so drastically.

I think it's due to internet streaming. People can watch dramas at their own convenience. Hohoho

I think streaming is definitely a factor. Ratings drastically decreased in the U.S. during the same time frame too.

Streaming is one aspect but I'm not sure if these extremely low numbers can be blamed on online streaming alone. If we had numbers to collaborate the online streaming views it would be useful. Moreover I feel people have just lost interest in watching dramas especially the older population which is the largest local drama consuming demographic would rather watch morning dramas or dailies. Prime time television doesn't pull in a big audience like it used to. The ratings for cable can't be compared to public TV because it's a much smaller population that actually pays for cable and people who are paying for specific channels are more likely to watch the content on that channel specifically. So basically amongst the people paying for cable most are likely to watch it which gives cable slightly better numbers. Korean youth mostly doesn't watch local dramas and prefer American dramas so increased online streaming doesn't necessarily mean they're watching Korean dramas online. The presence of too many new faces also doesn't motivate people to watch dramas where they don't either know or trust the actors. This is why there are fewer breakouts recently as younger actors continue to be overshadowed by older or more established actors.

I am guessing the rating system for network tv has become archaic. At least the cable ones are still reliable since it's easier to get data because there is a cable box. Cable subscribers are easy enough to account for while network tv has to rely on a guestimate.

I'm happy for Class of Lies ! That number definitelly isn't bad 😄 Considering that the drama doesn't really have A-list actors and actually have a large number of idol actors as the casts;
1. UKISS Jun - student Beom Jin
2. Former Idol School contestant Kim Myung Ji - student Yeri
3. Former Teen Top L.Joe/Byung Hun - student Byung Ho
4. Former 4Minute Kwon So Hyun - student Yoon A
5. Former Jewelry Kim Ye Won - teacher Hye Soo
(Wow.. I didn't realize it's THAT much until I write it down.. 😯)

I am happy for Hotel de Luna for generating high ratings, especially from a cable channel.
But despite the ratings for WtDCYN and Melo Suits Me, I am enjoying both dramas as well. Quite surprised with Melo since it hooked me right in.
Rain got me to check out Welcome 2 Life. It is a good drama and rooting for his character to leave his single world behind.
