I came across a new slang word I had to look up: lookism. It means construction of a standard for beauty and attractiveness, and judgments made about people on the basis of how well or poorly they meet the standard. It is a newer word for discriminates against both "beautiful" and "ugly" people, as it is prejudice against a person for the way they look, positively and negatively, based solely on their physical appearance and gender expectations This has been around for a long time under the guise of cultural beauty (standards) or stereotypes.

The traditional Korean beauty standard: fair white bright skin, V-line slim and small face, short chin, skinny body and ant waist, double eyelids, and youthful long hair.

South Korea is still the Number 1 country for plastic surgery. The gift most asked-for by high school senior women is some form of plastic surgery.

There are many actors and actresses who age well to handsome, mature, fit and attractive physical appearances. Oh Hyun Kyung is an example. Some of it is genetics, natural beauty. of course, there are so many K-beauty products promoted to make that happen.

Then there are actresses who seem to never age. They are called “Korean vampires.” Topping the list is Jang Nara who at 41 can still play a college student.

Others mention Song Hye Kyo, Park Min Young, Jeon Ji Hyun, Song Ji Hyo, Han Ji Min, Park Bo Young and Kim Tae Hee in the vampire class photo.

Do you think that is a fair assessment? Do you think it gives these actresses an advantage in project offers or career longevity?

If they didn't keep pairing them with much much younger It boys, maybe. As it is, it has started to feel off-putting to me. There are so many great looking older male actors. WHY they keep doing these pairings, I don't understand.

I don’t get it either. I mean every now and then an older woman/younger man story is interesting but it seems like it’s all the time. Maybe it’s my age and I prefer a hero to look like an adult now 🤷‍♀️😄

Except for the (in my opinion) ugly neologism, lookism is nothing new, nor is the double standard for older men and older women. I really hate to hear of young people requesting plastic surgery, though. Reporting from Southern California, which I still think as somewhat trend-setting, I can say that if many of those Korean girls temporarily moved here, they might find disturbing the white American male culture that often fetishes Asian women, but they also might rethink surgery to look a way that is currently in vogue in Korea (with Southern Californian young men of all ethnicities crushing on, for example, the spectacularly beautiful snowboarder Chloe Kim, who sets a difficult standard, but certainly not pale, small faced or even long hair). As for beauty standards for older women, I see this changing where I live as well, as society as whole ages. Women know a lot more about this than I do, obviously (!), and can set me straight if I'm clueless. But around here, I see fewer older blondes walking around, and many more attractive gray-haired women. (Who, I must stress, I give just the tiniest of a second side glance to ONLY for the purposes of sociological study). I'm wondering if the beauty ideals of older Korean actresses might move away from the "vampire" look in a way that appeals to a global older audience.

I'd say that beautiful actors and actresses getting typecast as romantic leads - and role offers getting sparser as they enter middle age (as we all know, middle age in entertainment business starts at 25 for women and at 55 for men 😂) - happens everywhere, it isn't SK specific. It's not easy for an actor to pivot from romantic lead roles to meatier stuff when they get older, so the temptation to stay young and stick to their trademark roles must be strong, not to talk about advice they may be receiving from their agencies. But it's not impossible: Nicole Kidman and Julia Roberts made it! I'd love to see Park Min Young break free from the romantic female lead mold. Jang Nara at least is allowed to be funny 😁
For this matter, my guess is that it's probably easier to have a long career as a character actor if you aren't outstandingly pretty, although, obviously, entry barrier to the profession is also usually higher the less conventionally pretty you are. More power to performers who are conventionally beautiful but seek out more diverse roles and characters that don't look pretty - Jung Yi or Yoo Ah In come to mind

In any case, I think lookism is universal, but beauty standards in k-ent are extraordinarily high and narrow. Sometimes I feel like holding some of these actors' hand and telling them 'it's ok, honey, you can have a rest'. The pressure to always look flawless must be exhausting- and, really, these people would look amazing even without all the fuss (impeccable makeup, milimetrical hairdos, filters, impromptu pushup sessions, etc)

Has anyone seen the mocumentary Actresses? From 2009, 6 well known Korean women are in a photoshoot for Vogue Korea. They are all iconic actresses, like Youn Yuh-jung, before her Oscar, obviously; Kim Min-hee, before her "scandal"; and the glorious and ever so slightly drunk, Go Hyun-jung, well before Reflections of You. While it began showcasing their insecurities, especially how they would compare with the others, it ended with them talking to each other as women who had lived through personal trials. They offered very real comfort to each other. While it was a contrived production, although the only thing scripted was a cat fight, in spite of this it ended with warmth and empathy. It will always stay with me and I may rewatch it. Unusual for me. This is what I'd prefer to keep in mind. Sure lookism is huge, how you present is huge, and in keeping with the national character, but dig beneath the surface and there is compassion and warmth.

1st April - have to create the twitter account - I won't

When the heart is up - not gonna do this n that on this specific date and day. Its such too much foolish approach. Have to fly freely - being more reckless and careless. not the carefree.

Rest is as same as ever - Inflation is the king and

funny action is taking place in Sri Lanka and Pak. Never ever any boring day in human kingdom.

Happy weekend Beanies and keep Beaning On!

Also, happy April Fools Day! I have heard many stories today that are simply too good to be true, so I am reserving judgement until tomorrow to be safe.😄 However, I am grateful to either the bearers of good news or the prankers that made me smile today. We could always use more laughter.

I have been ill all week with little appetite and difficulties to take more than a couple bites of my meals. Similar symptoms have been coming and going all month, so I have scheduled an appointment with my physician next week to draw some blood and discuss things. Many possible causes could have contributed, but stress turns out to be the biggest one. I told my therapist, who is also a physician, about my physical ailments and how they had been affecting my mental health this week. Other topics that I did not know were bothering me came up as well, and my therapist immediately linked body and mind together.

I am feeling and eating a lot better since some of that weight has been lifted, and keeping my fingers crossed that a full recovery will soon follow.💪🏻

Happy Friday, Beanies! Winter decided to show up when Spring is already due, so instead of going through with my plan of heading to the hills for the weekend, I'm staying in. I guess I'll risk exposing my laptop to the plague just to catch up with Grid (found first 3 episodes pretty good), and Pachinko, if I can find it. The rest of thr time, I'll dedicate to dodging 25 21 and ABP spoilers 😄 Kdrama fomo has been no joke, Netflix, oh Netflix, why do you hate me?

Hey. To all the HOA haters out there, please take a moment to remember that they are human too, and that they might be (often are?) unpaid and just regular homeowners doing their best to make sure the community stays in good shape while also staying financially responsible. The end.

I'm not sure where else should I write this, so posting it here. @db-staff I have been unable to post anything on my wall since yesterday. I'm guessing the site is under some development but I see others posting fine for now.
