Summer Vacation with Rain

As announced, supa-star Rain held his fanmeeting and birthday party (called “Summer Vacation with Rain”), at Olympic Hall in Seoul’s Olympic Park on July 27.

The event commenced at 3pm, hosted by MC Kim Jae-dong, who made his TV debut around the same time as Rain’s singer debut. That familiarity made for a light-hearted time with lots of joking around as Kim interviewed Rain. The star also sang “A Day” (haru do) and “How to Escape the Sun” and danced to “Instead of Saying Goodbye.”

Approx fans 1,300 were from overseas, making for an overall total of around 3,000.

Some interview highlights:

His “worldwide album” planned for September has been pushed to next year, mainly in part because of his filming schedule for upcoming film Ninja Assassin. However, he does plan for an “Asia special album” for October, to be released — and performed, and promoted — in China, Japan, Thailand, Hong Kong, and throughout Asia. He explained, “The Asia special album is about 50 percent complete. Actually, I’m holding up completing the remaining half because I want to perfect it.”

(What does “worldwide album” even mean? Is that a euphemism for his U.S./English-language album? Is this his way of backing off from Western ambitions without actually admitting to it? Did he finally realize that despite overwhelming domestic popularity, the U.S. watered-down-R&B-pop-music machine is saturated with homegrown pop-star aspirants? Is he going to sing in multiple languages?)

As for his Hollywood film, Rain trained rigorously for his role as the titular assassin, learning swordplay as well as how to throw a blade attached to a chain. He lost a lot of weight while training, although he expressed having a hard time with the strict diet: “If I stayed away from food for too long, I’d end up overeating, and my insulin levels would shoot up, which isn’t healthy.” Thus he mostly stuck to a 30-30-40 diet (30 percent protein, 30 percent fat, 40 carbs, aka The Zone diet).

Rain also revealed, “I thought filming a Hollywood movie would allow for more sleep and more comfortable shooting, but I was wrong. Because daily production costs are so high, I ended up sleeping five hours a night and started filming at 8am and continued all through the day.”

Asked what event in his six years of fame has left the strongest impression, he answered that it was meeting with the now-deceased cancer patient Ahn So-bong: “When I visited the hospital room, he was sadly in the late stages of cancer. Afterward, we spoke many times over the phone, but because I was working overseas, I couldn’t visit again, which was painful for me. Up till that point in my life, that was probably the one really good thing I’d done with my celebrity.”

His cooking? “I’ve cooked for myself a lot,” he explained, prompting Kim Jae-dong to ask for the recipe for his kimchi chigae. (He’d cooked onstage at a previous fanmeeting last year.)

Acknowledging that he’s spent quite some time away from home, he promised, “After I release my Asia special album in October, I’ll be doing promotional activities so much that my fans will get sick of me.”

A little Rain-weary are we, dramabeans? I would point you to a cringe-worthy interview with Rain at ComiCon, but after reading this, i'll refrain. His English has not improved much and I'm guessing the reason he spends so much time on set is because he's spending a lot of time perfecting those lines. A lot.

Haha, I must agree on the "what was he thinking" comment. He makes me think of Que Sera Sera with how the main actress had her hair like that during various points! Gotta admit I would prefer him with a short hair style like he had on "A Love to Kill" (however terrible that drama was). In some shots he also looks like he could be 15.

Maybe he needs a "forced submersion" to attempt getting his English down? Sometimes the hard way is the only way to get something done properly, and it sounds like that might be something he needs. If you're forced to speak a language that's certainly not your primary language, it can speed things up. 'Cause you really don't have a choice in learning if no one else speaks your language. Granted, for Rain it sounds like it'd be a very long time before it works.

I'll admit it loud and clear. Rain rocks!! I still don't like his obsessions with breaking it into US, but damn, I just love him. Even from those tiny bits of highlights, he just seems like such a nice and down to earth guy. Go Rain!

well, i dont think anyone had understood why he would still like to break into the US.

in a recent interview, i think you can find it on youtube, he had stated that the reason he wants to make it into america not only because he can be more famous, but is because he want to open new door for korean music industry. he also said if he succeed, it will be great, but if not, then other generations of new artists will be able to pass through that door that he had already opened.

i believe that he got talents and also his personality make him the person who he is today. he deserve to be up there where he really is, and even though if he fails to make it higher, true fans of his will still love and support him. people who understand him will know what kind of person he is, so no further said. RAIN, i am always behind you, no matter what you do. good luck in your break to the US and i cannot wait for your new album.

Now, why did fans find Rain special? It was (note the past tense) the cute face, sexy mellow voice (which doesn't quite fit his face), hot bod, sizzling dance moves and unbelievable stage charisma. Throw in Full House (no FH, no Rain the superstar). All these factors made him "the phenomenon" - which supposedly made him the ideal cross-over candidate.

Dilute these factors and?? Now he's just relying on his name to open doors for him. Most fans want the old Rain back.

My wish is for him to stay in Asia and not make all these moves which leave him looking like a complete ass. If you look at his smile/expressions now, it is pretty obvious that he is not enjoying what he's doing. He's just trying to conquer EVERYTHING.

you can't have the old Rain back!! that was six (6) years ago. he was what 20 years old and just staring out? everyone has grown some since then. his fans have grown with him and continue to support and understand him.
he is challenging himself (according to an interview), on things he hopes he can accomplish. some, he knows may fail but he is still willing to try his best.
success to him (he says) is simply to do his best, so it's not failure to him.
that's his take on his achievements regarding what he does with his life.

his hair style, he says is a style his father wore some twenty years ago (told during a recent interview) and he likes it. i guess that's all that matters.
and this one makes what 61 different styles!!

as for Rain entering the us market, america needs to get over it. our entertainers go all over this globe performing, and can't speak the language of the country they perform in and not a peek is said about it.

learning english for a korean i 'm sure is another challenge since the sentence stucture is the complete opposite with many american alphabet characters absent. however, he has said that he takes a translator with him for the time being so as not to make too many mistakes. he feels he will be speaking more smoothly in about a year.

i give him kuddos for trying and staying persistant. tyring two many things at once, no ever knows what they can accomplish until they try.
and lastly, i find his entertainment realy refreshing, a lot of americans are sick and tired of this stuff they called music, which is why sales have been going down.

I support him in my own way but I don't understand him. Sure, he can challenge himself. I know I'm praying for him but not necessarily rooting for every single darn thing esp the USA debut.

This is just MY opinion. It's not going to stop Bi oppa right?
