Han Ji-min’s vertigo

…and no, that’s not a movie allusion.

I wasn’t aware of this, but apparently Han Ji-min (Yi San, Capital Scandal) suffers from a condition called Meniere’s disease:

“A disorder of the inner ear that can affect hearing and balance. It is characterized by episodes of dizziness and tinnitus and progressive hearing loss, usually in one ear. It is caused by an increase in volume and pressure of the endolymph of the inner ear.” –Wikipedia

Her management revealed her condition not long ago, stating that her ailment isn’t severe, but leads to vertigo and dizziness when she’s tired. This is apparently news again now that she’s working on her new drama, SBS’s Cain & Abel with So Ji-sub, as well as the fact that [SPOILER!] a character in Beethoven Virus was recently disclosed to suffer from this disease. So does (another surprise) actor-director Yoo Ji-tae (Oldboy).

Huh. Well, then.

i sympathize with her and all others who have this. i suffered from vertigo and brushed it aside thinking that i was nothing serious. before i knew it, i was undergoing surgery for a TUMOR which caused the imbalance. luckily it was benign! others are not so lucky because i have seen some other patients whose faces became disfigured or their head & neck nerves permanently debilitated. i hope she gets all the necessary work up and medication before things get any worse.

My mom has this condition. She gets it when she overworks herself. It makes her wanna throw up because everything is spinning round and round. That spinning sensation doesn't go away for days.

this is actually a disease that can get quite severe... mostly because theres excess fluids in the labyrinth (inner ear) that creates balance problems...

when we get these patients at the hospital, we often need make sure they are in low beds... cuz' the dizziness happen quite alot in the mornings, its a safety concern.

interestingly enough there are alot of famous people inflicted with this condition, including Marilyn Monroe, Emily Dickenson, (reportedly) Julius Caesar, and Charles Darwin.

Wow, I didn't realize so many people had this. I wondered if I had it, too, to a mild degree. There was a week or two where moving suddenly made me dizzy and the room spin, but it went away. Mayhap better get it looked at.

wow i didnt realize, vertigo was a result of this. but wait though, the Beethoven Virus character's case is quite serious.. compared to hers.. cause she is going [SPOILER] deaf.. and her hearing goes in and out.. yikes... scary.. i hope these people dont overwork, overstress themselves..

Was this one of the reasons for her quitting Entertainment Weekly ? To avoid fatigue and overwork? I loved her on the show, trading barbs with Kim Jae-dong. I'm still getting used to the new lady Seon-young.

Hey, neat, I have Meniere's too. I had a huge attack a couple of days ago and my whole desk turned nearly upside down, it was crazy. It gets worse when I haven't slept enough too, so that must be a more common trigger than i realized. :)

I haven't watched any of the Beethoven Virus, but that's interesting that it deals with a musician having hearing loss as a result of this condition. It has damaged my hearing as well, which is very sad for me because music is one of my best talents. :(

@fraulein,

"I’m still getting used to the new lady Seon-young."

She's getting better. What makes the show good is all the ad-libbing and teasing that goes in with the show, and that takes time. I'm ambivalent about Han Ji Min's acting, but as a host, she was LOVE. Adorable AND professional, never missed a beat. Also, because HJM's career has been so busy, you get these cheeky, meta-Chunamungro moments where she's interviewing/promoting a Kang Ji Hwan or Eom Tae Woong, and you realize "huh. how many hosts/reporters can you name that's KISSED their subjects?"

"Was this one of the reasons for her quitting Entertainment Weekly ?"

I thought it was remarkable she was doing a sageuk while hosting the show. A lot of actresses (for example, Kim Ji Soo did Entertainment Relay a long time ago) boost their careers with the show. Han Ji Min, maybe still not a ratings draw, is even more popular than YEH with the female audience.
