Joo Ji-hoon seeks 1 year in prison

Joo Ji-hoon arrives at court on June 9

Correction: Apologies, I read further to see that the punishment is not final. The prosecutors sought the stated prison terms for the accused, but the official sentencing comes in two weeks.

Joo Ji-hoon appeared at the Seoul Central District Court on June 9 for a hearing after being caught using drugs (ecstasy and ketamine), where he sought a 1-year prison term and a penalty of 440,000 won.

On this day, Joo Ji-hoon, actress Yoon Seol-hee, and model Yeh Hak-young all admitted to their wrongdoing, and Joo said, “I am deeply regretful of my mistake.” In his final statements, he added, “As one person acting in one moment, I could not restrain my curiosity and ended up hurting many people. I have vowed not to do anything like this again.”

His lawyer added, “Joo Ji-hoon took the drugs while very intoxicated, and did not take any more after the incident last year in April. He had postponed his enlistment date to October 2009, but if he postpones it because of this incident, he will come back a new person after serving his military duty.”

The other celebrities caught up in the scandal sought harsher punishments for trafficking and selling the drugs on multiple occasions: 7 years’ imprisonment and a fine of 13.2 million won for Yoon Seol-hee, the trafficker in the scandal, and 5 years and a 2.26 million won penalty for Yeh Hak-young. They will all receive announcement of their verdict and sentencing at a public hearing on June 23.

(I know a year in prison sounds pretty harsh for a celebrity drug scandal… but I actually think Joo Ji-hoon could face much, much worse. A year is enough time for him to drop out of the public eye, after which he can serve out his military duty, and return with a rehabilitated image in three years. Given that he has to do the army duty regardless, it’s as good a time as any to drop out of the spotlight and let people forget about him for a while.)

i think 2-3 years will be a good break for him..and to let the story die down..he can make a come back becos im sure a lot of fans will be waiting for him..
i dont think 2-3 years that he lay low from ent biz is a punishment but rather be the only one good choice he has at the moment..
this will be the biggest obstacle in life that he will need to get through it..in order to become a better person...i hope he walk through this gracefully..

if he will be sentenced more than 1 year jailtime, then he is no longer required to go to MS, at least that's what I was told. Which is also why netizens are getting pissed off, cause they want him to do 1 year jailtime and the 2 years Mandatory Service.

ummm...javabeans, i understand that it's korea and they're ultra conservative about drugs since it's not available there. but his sentence sounds VERY reasonable, since he used it while drunk. and i hope he doesn't get put into jail because going into the military is equivalent to being out of the spotlight.

Hello!!! Just because your favorite actor is going to jail, doesn't mean that people can just blame everything on the system!

Get this inside your heads...

1. Korea is NOT the United States nor any other Western nation thats easy on drug use. Every country has it's own laws and regulations that needs to be followed, so people need to stop pushing down US, Canadian and other countries leniency about drug use down people's throat just because their idol is in a bad situation.

2. Military Service is a MANDATORY requirement if you a born as a Korean man, and should not be used a mere "mercy" rule for rehabilitation

3. Being drunk is not an excuse for taking drugs. What a lame excuse.

I could understand that Korea is very against drug use, and I can accept that 1yr isn't too bad for being in Korea, although i don't agree with it. What I hate is that there were many others involved, there were many other names given, why aren't those coming out? Why are they pushing it all on JJH? I really don't agree with Korea's fairness at all.

It's at the point where even if he had already served the country, he would have to sign up again in order to show just how contrite he is. Besides, he won't be able to get any sort of work for a while for this screw-up so he might as well pay the price.

i think it's just right to give tough punishment to drug users. tough punishment will hopefully make users of illegal drugs think more than twice about using those drugs. remember the law of supply and demand in economics? if there is no demand for a certain product or service, then there will be no need to produce that product or render that service. if there are no users of illegal drugs, then manufacturers, producers, sellers and dealers of illegal drugs will just stop manufacturing and selling them for lack of a market to sell them to. but we're still a long way off to becoming a drug-free society, all we can do right now is to make tougher laws and make sure that these laws are implemented correctly.

additional comment: aside from punishment, drug users should also undergo drug rehabilitation because without it the user could just go back to using drugs after the punishment has been served.

all i have to say is..im kinda disappointed. i thought joo ji hoon was a great actor and that i could look up to him in a way (not that drugs has anything to do with how great you act) but seriously..i expected more from this actor. i dont get it when people say oh its okay i still love you. uhh what the heck. so he's a celebrity which gives him the right to do drugs?

sometimes there are some events, situations, issues or whatever you call it and they should be considered in a global way of thinking. I insist that it was his personal choice, and nobody can judge him as long as he doesn't hurt anyone else in any way. (especially they souldn't judge him in that harsh way.)
he's a successful actor and I'm sure he's not the only one using drugs but only one caught.
I wish I coulbe here with him and show my love and support.
fighting JJH!!!!

i don't think i will ever get the rationale or the "justice" behind people going to prison because of using illegal drugs (unless they perpetrated a crime caused by them being under the influence, which is a completely different story since there's an actual act/harm against another). no matter what angle i look from, people like jjh, they're more victims than criminals who should be sent to rehab, not a prison.

We are an Asian country( Philippines) but celebrity or not is not put to jail but will undergo drug test and if positive he or she will go to rehabilation center(private or public depending upon the financial capability). Who goes to jail are the pushers with even harsher penalties than Korea because they can even get life sentences depending on the amount of drugs in possession at the time of arrest. I believe our laws sounds fair enough...

I would like to know why people are so upset with Joo Ji Hoon's mistake and why people are not screaming there heads off at what happened to actress Jang Ja Yeon, who is reported to have been used as a sex slave, along with other actresses, or (comfort women). Are the rich and powerful men who used these women above the law? Are the newspaper reporting much about this? Shouldn't the investigation be reported to the public more fully? Is the police afraid of these powerful people. Are they really doing a proper investigation?

Don't get me wrong, Joo Ji Hoon made a big mistake that many kids of today make. He should be given a change to redeem himself because he did it to himself and it was his first time. Send him to rehab and then to the Army, then let him work again.

3 yrs (1 yr imprisonment inclusive of 2 yrs military service) would be too long..the drug seller will only be sentenced for 5 yrs jail terms, so unfair

1 year of prison!
for a mistake he has done when he was INTOXICATED!
he didn't even know what he was doing!
it wasn't like he did it on purpose! and you give him 1 year of prison. thats hella messed up.
and it was one year ago that happen. he hasn't even taken one after that incident.
why would you do this to him. I bet you not even the korean fans like this, though they might be disappointed but they don't want to see one of their favorite actors in jail just because a mistake. Just give him 2 years in the army and he can come back with a new fresh start.

He is a very good actor and model...
He work so hard, just to achieve what he has now..
They can't take it away from him...
Just only one drugs, what's the big deal!
The important is he regret it and he said sorry to public...
He is honest person, he didn't even deny it...
WHY?
Why he should suffer like this!?!
UNFAIR!
But we still love you..
