So talk to me about dramas people!

What are you currently watching?

I'm currently watching Creating Destiny, which remains cute. I need subs dammit! The OTP is getting cute, and I knew they would be. It follows the typical k-drama route, but it's still cute. There's a reason why it works!

I also like how they incorporate the fact that Eugene isn't totally Korean, she's Americanized and her personality doesn't mesh too well with traditional Korean values. I loved how in the beginning episodes she kept saying, 'Stop saying OUR country OUR country' in regards to Korea. It's an interesting topic that I wish they'd go into more.

The father's bromance is cute, although the one scene of them holding hands in bed kind of creeped me out a bit. In my head I yelled, "Too close, too close!!"

Happy Friday everyone!
I love the song, but thats a given since Band of Horses rocks.

I get almost done with finals today and I need to space out for a few days before starting my next paper.

Looking for suggestions with a drama to space out with! I keep seeing the City Hall recaps recently and they've got me interested. Is it a good one for a marathon??

Other dramas currently airing:

Smile You: I'm sooo behind on this! I want to catch up to the episodes where they are lovey dovey. Right now I'm at where Hyun Soo still doesn't like Jung In.

Is Will It Snow On Christmas any good? I haven't seen any of it.

Temptation Of Wife or whatever it's called. I saw the first few episodes then kind of forgot about it.

So many dramas, so little time.

Is anyone watching any Japanese or Taiwanese dramas right now?

Not bad.usually i don't watch melodrama.
i think episode 3 pace is slower than 1 and 2 but the pace is still not too slow.
at least i love the first 3 episodes.
with some touching parts.
It is like a bit typical type, but it has the feeling.....
i dunno how to explain but i find it quite romantic.
i hope the upcoming episodes will be nice...

mishane - I am currently watching Temptation of an Angel and Story of a Man in Korean dramas. Story of a Man is pretty superior to TOAA but I love me some Bae Soo-bin so I continue to watch it. :) But SOAM is totally blowing my mind. Amazing. And the one guy... what's his name Cha Do-woo (played by Kim Kang-woo) is... oh my word. He's brilliant in this drama. I think he's the first villain I am absolutely fascinated by. There is so much depth to this character and it's twisted. But on the other hand, he's so pretty to look at.

Anyway, Just finished City Hall (LOVED!) Brilliant Legacy (LOVED) and of course You're Beautiful (Another LOVE).

Watching Autumn's Concerto in Taiwan... Vanness Wu is the main character and I really like this drama. I think it's given Vanness a platform to showcase his ability for deeper acting. The main actress is adorable and the storyline is heart wrenching. A very good Taiwanese drama in my opinion.

I'd love a good recommendation for a Japanese drama because I haven't watched any in a long, long time. (Not since Nodame Cantabile...)

I am watching Episode 17 of IRIS. ^________^ Hahaha...the Rambo street fighting was rather outrages for the world standard.

Am sure Seoul will be rated as the most violent and dangerous city by the World Peace Index, even higher ranking than Bagdad and Kabul!! Amen!!

@ 6 Annonymous

I started downloading Autumn Concerto but I haven't started watching it yet. I was told it was really melodramatic.

I liked SOAM but I burned out somewhere around episode 8 when the main guy said he didn't want revenge anymore. Um. Isn't that the point of the drama? Oh well, I'll probably pick it up again in the future. I now have a huge crush on Kim Kang Woo. So so hot. Even with a pencil mustache.

My favorite j-drama is Pride. You should definitely watch that. So good.

Is anyone watching that new Rainie drama? I think it's called Hello My Sweetheart. I wanted to start it but I haven't heard anything from anyone about it.

I'm mostly caught up with Smile, you and I totally recommend! The ending to ep 16 gets me EVERYTIME. I re-watched those 5 minutes repeatedly

@7 I just realized really behind on IRIS (I think I found my marathon drama for this weekend). How are they on 17 already????? I feel like they just started. Street fight in Seoul..so excited!!

Speaking of jodrama's, has anyone watched a good portion of TOKYO DOGS? I've been a huge shun oguri fan since Hanadan, but him in a suit might not be enough of a reason to watch

Chingus:) Happy Happy Friday:)...it's starting to get pretty chilly here in Phoenix.

I am in a really good mood because my soon to be wed best friend comes into town today, and our trio of ladies is going out to dinner to catch up on our lives. Looking forward to good food, and even better conversations with them!!

I just finished What's Up Fox, and it took 5 episodes for me to really really like it, but after that I fell hard for it, and Chul Soo. Omo, I cried at the very end because it was just so beautiful the way they love each other.

Sometimes I felt uncomfortable with the age gap, but love cannot be limited by age for the most part. I really really loved Jun Hee/Adjussi's love story, I kept watching for them...well the Adjussi, he really just grabbed my attention and made me interested in his story. The two of them together was pure sweetness.

Okay, so I am downloading Love Shuffle, again. I didn't really like the first episode, but after watching a dmv on youtube I decided to give it a try again.

I'm also downloading Flowers For My Life, I have been meaning to watch this drama for a while, so I am taking the initiative to get started on it once the wedding craziness ends next weekend.

My external hard drive has like 10 dramas I still need to watch, but these two plus finishing You're Beautiful 10-16, and Smile, You come first.

Have an AWESOME weekend everyone.

I just got home for Christmas break and I need something to watch. any suggestions? I like love stories, especially those where the main characters have great chemistry, but I feel like I've seen all the good ones! goong, full house, KSS, my girl, lovers, soulmate...etc, if you guys visit aznv, I've seen most of the dramas ranked in the top 25.

Right now I'm watching jewel in the palace episode 12, I like it but I wish there was some kind of love story :), hehe.
Thanks guys and happy friday!

Happy Friday!!

Let's see...dramas I'm currently watching:

Korean: What's Up Fox? I know it's old but it was recently recommended by my wonderful OT friends and I have 2 more eps left. Totally loving it - a lot more realistic than most kdramas out there... kind of in the realm of 9E2O. Some crazy characters for sure, but not in the psycho-i-want-to-ruin-your-life-forever kind of way. Nice pacing - didn't ever really feel draggy to me. And i am adoring Jung Myung :)

IRIS - still haven't gotten past ep 4 - waiting to marathon this on the plane to Taiwan. But I really like it so far... and from the random clips I've watched of MY TOP, he's looking damn good. LBH ain't to shabby either lol. ;)

Taiwanese: Autumn's Concerto - Vanness and Ady really do quite well in this and Ady is absolutely gorgeous. Can't get enough of Xiao Le either - the kid is too darling. Story is cliched up the wazoo but.... it works. And I painstakingly wait for it week by week.

Shanghai Sweetheart / Hi, My Sweetheart - wacky and fluffy and fun. Show Luo just rocks... Lee Wei...if only he would cut his hair... would be so fine. And Rainie gets to be the lucky girl caught between 2 hot men :)

Japanese: Tokyo Dogs - just started this so not sure how i feel yet, but I love both Oguri and Hiro so I think i'll enjoy it.

15 days till I leave for Taiwan and only 8 more days of work... starting to get real antsy hehe...

I want to watch The Invincible Lee Pyeong-Kang, but there aren't any subs past episode 3!

I've been watching 9 End 2 Outs/Bottom of the 9th with 2 Outs.. it's a little slow, but I like it.

I need to watch some Jdramas, because Japanese is the language I studied and I'm getting rusty... I'm just having a hard time finding good ones!

For those of you looking for j-drama recs, I definitely recommend these:

(1) Pride. Takuya Kimura at his finest. Almost like a k-drama. Takuya Kimura plays a hockey player who enters into a sort of dating contract with a girl who is waiting for her love to return to her. Lots of angsty looks, sexy Maybe?'s. Seriously. I have so much love for this drama.

(2) Nodame Cantabile. This is wacky and silly and if you don't like OTT, then you might not like it. I don't mind silliness that much. The drama itself is okay, if you like classical music, you'll love this. I found that while Nodame is silly, it has a LOT of heart. The romance is minimal in the drama but if you watch the two SP's, the romance REALLY kicks it up a notch. My second favorite drama.

(3) Hana Yori Dango. An absolutel classic. I find that this is what most people watch when they first get into dramas. It's had multiple adaptations, including the horrible Boys Over Flowers which I refuse to watch. Therefore, HYD stays ultimate in my head.

(4) Love Shuffle. Silly, silly fun. Shota shirtless. Shota getting his face licked. Shota. Shota. Shota.

(5) 1 Litre No Namida. If you want to cry. Then watch this. Cause you'll cry. Not only cry, but sob. Not only sob, but go through whole body spasms. But in a good way.

I don't watch as much j-dramas as I do k-dramas, but those are the ones that really stuck out in my head.

Wow. I haven't been in one of these in a while. Hi everybody, how are you? You still remember me?

@Dele
Flowers for my life is awesome. Very touching! There's one of the best second male leads ever, imho.

@mishane
I'm currently watching Sons of Sol Pharmacy (soooo cute! 13 more eps to go, woohoo), IRIS, Return of Iljimae, which is OMGSOGOODOMG but I'm waiting for my partner in crime (aka the friend with whom I watch dramas with) to catch up with me so I'd say RoI is sort of on hiatus right now *pouts* and Tokyo Dogs which is so not what I was expecting (to tell the truth it's kinda boring, but I'm still watching it. I can't very well watch only kdramas, right? I'd get spoiled). I think I have too much on my plate right now. *facepalm*

I watched all the jdramas you recced (minus 1 Litre No Namida. I don't want to cry and I know I'd be a mess if I were to watch this). Pride is SO good! Definately a must-watch. If you haven't watched it already, watch Buzzer beat. It reminded me of Pride (though Pride had more realistic sport scenes, imho).

@ #6 Carrie: try BUZZER BEAT. That's one gem of jdorama. It's Yamapi and it's about basketball. and i caught sight of a cute pro basketballer igarashi kei in it. haha. sorry for talking about the superficial stuff. But BUZZER BEAT is more than just the cute guys. It's really an awesome sports-themed jdorama. the last one I recalled with that much excitement was PRIDE. But even pride got a little boring towards the end. but BUZZER BEAT kept me at the edge till the last moment.

Happy Friday! It snowed and rained here in California. Yes we are happy because we need both. Also I can get into the mood of Christmas with this winterize weather instead of 83 degree at Thanksgiving.

Right now I am searching for something else to watch. I have gone back to watch Star Lovers because I never got a chance to watch it (yes, I am desperate). This drama is so-so but anyone can suggest me some good one, I am willing to switch.

Have a great weekend. All the people living here in SoCal, stay dry/warm.

I have Sons of Sol Pharmacy House waiting to be watched. It might be my Sunday afternoon drama.

I was tempted to check out Return of Iljimae but I was told by someone that the romance is very minimal. I like romance in my k-dramas. :( And it kills me to say that.

I heard good and bad things about Buzzer Beat. I was never a huge Yamapi fan (he seems so young to me. I like my men older) and it always looked more silly than serious. Is that not the case? If it's not, then maybe I'll take a look. How is the romance in it? I mean, what's the OTP situation/trope, girlfriend, best friends, they hate each other at first then like each other?

@6 Carrie - I just completely rewatched Nodame Cantabile. I have to be in the right mood to watch j-dramas like that and apparently I was in a Nodame mood for some reason.

@14 I did like Mr. Brain, especially after I realized that the reason I liked it was that the main character greatly resembled Tom Baker's Dr. Who. What can I say - you never forget your first Dr.

I want to catch Tokyo Dogs, but haven't managed to yet. The j-drama of the year I liked the best was Honjitsu mo Hare. Ijo Nashi - I keep saying that, but I must be the only person around here who has seen it or agrees or something. Other than that, my rule is that anything with Abe Hiroshi in it is usually worth a look, and since he's the busiest actor on Japanese TV that gives you quite a few to choose from. 8-)

I've got 2 more weeks (I think) of QSD (and I'll miss the hwarang eyecandy after it's over), and then I'm waiting for Chuno unless something else pops up. Creating Destiny is on MBC America with subs on the weekends, but I'm generally not watching the TV at that time, so I may have to DVR it to catch it. It looked cute. They are also running Soulmate again in the afternoons, so I'm actually not watching, but listening to that. Great music.

Seriously, is anything on the horizon looking good?

Hi Sere, mishane, everyone! - Good morning from me.

I have to pop into a meeting, but just needed to check OT, and yup, as I suspected the gang of nefarious evildoers are all noticeably absent (it appears I am the first kill Bora member to re-emerge from the hole I fell into last night after typing way to much). OT 112 went to over 500 comments, and I cannot even explain what went on except to say we discussed lots and lots of drama and tangential topics.

For those interested in Autumn's Concerto - I am enjoying it tremendously, and I've posted long reviews in the last few OTs (short recap: it's cliche done right, and Vanness is smokin').

For J-dramas, I'm watching Otomen between bouts of k-dramas, and it's cute, cute, cute.

I promised myself to start Hero (team underdog fighting!), but got sidetracked by Go Soo and his deep dark fathomless eyes in Will it Snow on Christmas, which is story wise better than I expected, but acting wise worse than I had hoped (other than GS's acting).

Re: RoI. Well, I've watched more than half of it and while yes, maybe the romance is not the main plot of the drama, RoI is, imho, one of the best kdramas ever filmed. Not only it's written nicely, it also has great music, great costumes, great acting and directing. It'd be a shame to cast it aside just because the drama is not ALL about love, or because it's not your typical kdrama about love. I'd say it's more of Iljimae's personal journey...adn that includes his love stories and what and how they affect him, how they shape his character and his life. So yeah, maybe it's atypical, but it still good and love still plays a great role. I'd rec this to anyone. If you're looking for a typical kdrama, then maybe it's not what you're looking for, but I found it refreshing. Personally, I couldn't wait to see the eps about his love stories...and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't waiting eagerly for all the scenes with his love interest, to see if the two of them would get together and how. To me, THAT was still good, but hey, the other stuff? The storylines not-related to his love stories? They were just as good to me. I never got boring while watching RoI

Re: Buzzer Beat. If you liked Pride, then you'll like BB as well. BB is not slapstick as, say, Nodame cantabile. yeah, if I had to make a comparison, Pride is the closest thing. BB is mostly a sports drama, but the love triangles play a HUGE part. it's like a compact version of a kdrama.

I LOVED the OTP. OMG it's one of my fave in Jdoramas, seriously, very very good. There's UST and a little bit of angst, but mostly it's all good. The main guy is SUCH a sweetie. As for tropes, well, let me think about it cos I don't want to spoil you too much.

For some reason i have started watching Taiwanese dramas.....I am not really enjoying most of the current crop of korean outputs.
The dramas i am currently watching are:

Autumn's Concerto: It is melodramatic but is charming and fast paced. The last couple of episodes is a little frustrating. But only three more episodes to go so i am guessing a lot of action in the following episodes...Slightly predictable and dramatic but absolutely enjoyable

Hi, My Sweetheart: Absolutely love it love it love it...I guess i am a big sucked for dorks turned into hot-stuff...But regardless its just amazingly cute...Show Lo is absolutely adorable as the nerd and the pretending player..MUST WATCH!!!!

Will it snow in Christmas: I havent enjoyed a korean melodrama as much as this one in a while..The child actors are extremely good and this show just manages to strike a chord in the Heart....The story has somewhat been done before but completely enjoyable...And there is GO SOO...If you thought he was good in Green Rose..Watch it here....I actually thought that Han Ye seul was going to suck but shez not that bad...The melodrama of the year for me...

Others: Smile You and Creating Destiny...Makes you smile for no reason...Although i think the parents are extremely annoying in both dramas
IRIS: You watch it...Its fun and you forget about it

Re: ROL, see I'm afraid it's gonna get too into history/political drama and I've never been a fan of that, in Asian or US television. I adored Legend and romance wasn't the main focus there, but I'll have to admit that some of the historical stuff about Korea lost me a bit. I'll keep it in mind since apparently the acting was great.

Okay, I'm pretty much convinced on Buzzer Beat now. I'm not currently watching any j-dramas so I'll probably pick this up.

Talking about Legend, I'm so sad that not a lot of people love it. :(

It's honestly the most TIGHTLY written drama I've ever seen. You know that point in a k-drama where you're like, "Did the writers run out of steam? They didn't need this episode"? Well, Legend doesn't have any of that. You watch it like this epic historical novel. Every scene meant something, every episode had a purpose.

I would describe it like a Korean Lord of The Rings. If you like mythology, you'll love it.

And the OTP is just delicious. It's so slow starting but amazing.

It also has my number one favorite female EVER. Sujini. She's so kick ass. Actually, ALL the women in this drama are kick ass. They all have a purpose and they are all just as important to the battle and plot as the men are, if not more.

God. Just talking about it makes me want to re-watch it.

To anyone wanting to watch Autumn's Concerto... it is really good. Yes - VERY melodramatic... but the main couple is adorable and like @ ockoala said Vanness is smoooookin hot in this drama. :)

I will definitely have to check out Pride and Buzzer Beat. Thanks for the suggestions!

@ momosan - did you like Nodame? I personally loved it and it renewed my love for classical music. (It is very sad how dramas influence my tastes in... well pretty much anything...) I also loved Kimi wa Petto... and will be very interested to see how the Korean version plays out...

@mishane... I'm right there with you in the Kim Kang-woo crush. Holy smokes that man is hot.... I've never loved a villain as much as him...

KDramas I recommend to anyone who is looking:

What's Up Fox - I thought this drama was great. Awesome chemistry, really great hysterical bits and a lot of heart.
Snow Queen - three hanky weepy but beautifully shot and Hyun-bin is gorgeous. Brilliant Legacy - I call this a life drama. It's got everything in it and Moon Chae-won really shines as a secondary character... Plus... Bae Soo-bin...
Story of a Man - just read the ramblings about how hot Kim Kang-woo is... you won't regret it. Oh yeah, it has a great story too. Read javabean's recaps about it - so amazing!!!!

Happy Friday! Great SOTD!

@ Mishane What I'm watching....
Creating Destiny: I really like this show. It gets better almost every ep and its a show where you have a soft spot of love for everyone except the mothers , Hye Rim and that dead beat daddy. Idk if I totally agree with the whole Westernized Eugene. There are definitely moments where I like it but others where it doesn't feel "consistent?" Either way wonderful show.

Smile You: My other "I can't believe I'm committing to more than 20 eps" show. This one is 100% lovable! Main couple, side couple, random but hilarious exes... worth your time but addictive so if you haven't started, wait a few more weeks.

Zettai Kareshi (Jdrama): Started this a couple days ago and I'm liking it alot! Hiro is unfortunately beautiful and the story grabs me. Perfect robot boyfriend, great looking boss, irritating quirky lead female... makes decently entertaining TV. I only hope Nighto doesn't get the Pinnochio syndrome... No real boys here, please!

@ 10 hpn88 and lovenyc
Tokyo Dogs: Love this stinking show! Hiro and Oguri...How can you go wrong? It was on my comp for weeks but once you finish ep 2 you should want more. I definitely am addicted. They just aired ep 8 so you can definitely stand to wait (only 10). Hope they do a Season 2!

@ Story of a Man was *whispering* the BEST drama of the year! Don't pass it up. I stopped watching it when it was airing because the subs weren't fast enough. I watched the raw but then I couldn't handle not knowing EVERYTHING....

@Flowers of My life
Look let me tell you that this show is beautiful! I cried from eps 11-16 because of the beauty. Seriously, this drama is wonderful and leaves you with an forgettable contentment. Wonderful, wonderful show!

@TOAA
I haven't kept up with this show. Watched ep 1 and it was too dramatic and silly but my drama buddy is hooked! I will pick it back up in ep 5 or so and see how I feel. I think that if you liked Shining Inheritance (which I abhorred!) you will prob like this show too. Its in the same vein to me in the over-the-top aspect. The revenge plastic surgery transformation will probably be my hook though.

@ 12 Recommendations
I think that this is hard for everyone but to limit the list, sticking with dramas that aired this year, check JB's poll a few posts back. 2009 was filled with drama favs that people are willing to shed blood over! I can say that I enjoyed alot of shows and some that are rarely mentioned but good from this year were: That Fool, Partner, The Man Who Can't Marry (for the romantic sector). Plenty of other better shows but these are lovable, fun and worth watching underdogs in my book.

Dramas I'm watching...

Smile, You, but I'm several episodes behind, and I'm beginning to lose interest (despite all the romance). I'm sure I'll pick it up again at some point, but I'm all giddy with holiday spirit and want something faster.

Which is weird because I'm also trying to get through My Love Patzzi. I totally didn't realize that the guys were Kim Rae Won and Kim Jae Won (the smile!), but it's still suuuuper slow.

For Jdramas, I'm watching both Ohitorisama and Liar Game 2. Out of everything though, Ohitorisama has to be the one I'm most invested in now. Even though it's this total cliched Japanese older woman romance, it's cute and somehow fresh. For once the woman is completely okay with being single, which makes it much more enjoyable.

...and because I'm a proud older sister, I have to share a picture of the newest member of my family, Elli.

If you haven't watched Corner With Love with Barbie Xsu and Alan Luo you should. Besides MARS this is my favorite t-drama.

Happy Friday everyone! Just finished my last final (it was hard but it's over with!)...only a paper and a couple of lab reports left to write. Am so glad it's almost over.

@ockoala
Lol. I went back and checked the OT just now...you all were up pretty late... It really seems like it was the longest OT ever.

@mishane
Now that I have some time on my hands. I'm going to go finish Conspiracy in the Court which I would recommend to anyone who likes revenge dramas like Story of a Man and sageuks like Return of Iljimae And then catching up with Smile, You, and the jdoromas JIN and Ohitorisama. I really like JIN, anybody else watching it? Someone mentioned Otomen in the last OT and think I might check it out, just to see what's it like...I think I may have read some of the mangaka's previous works. And now that I have time I might check out Hero or Will it Snow for Christmas...
And maybe Autumn Concerto ...I've missed t-dramas

@Dele Hello fellow Arizonan! :) I live in Tucson, but drive to Mesa every week for school.

I am finishing up You're Beautiful (cute, but not as satisfying as I though it would be, still has great cathartic moments, but I felt like they didn't develop the characters quite as much as I'd like).

I have Coffee Prince still needing to be watched, and tons of K-movies too.

Yay for break soon. Just have one more final next week and then no school for a month. Can't wait for my Asia trip.

My other “I can’t believe I’m committing to more than 20 eps” show

Yeah. My longest drama was at 28 episodes (Brilliant Legacy). I have no idea how I'm going to watch Creating Destiny and Smile You with around 40 episodes each. GAH.

Since there are so many dramas k-dramas I'm currently watching, I figure I'll let subs pile up for each one and then do a marathon. I hate waiting for subs. This is why I really need to learn Korean. I watched a few episodes of Creating Destiny without subs and was able to get some of it (thanks to the amazing people at Soompi who summarize the episodes).

oh guys, you are fast! I got up for a moment a lots of new comments popped up. Woe, i'll never be able to keep up the pace.

@Mishane. Legend is on my list! As are a zillion other sageuks. ^^ Good to hear it's THAT good.

RoI is not...that much about politics or history, actually. Just sayin'. To me, it's still the story of a man. But heh, guys, chip in. I may be biased. I love it so much. ^^
