2010 Beanie Awards: Vote for your favorite dramas of the year

It’s December, and you know what that means around these parts: Time to reflect on the past year and see how the dramas stacked up! And boy, were there a lot of them.
As in previous years, I am planning a multi-part series (with special guest bloggers, natch!) to wrap up the year, which we’re busily writing up now — keep your eyes peeled in the coming weeks! If you want a refresher on how previous years have gone, here’s this handy tag to take you right to them.
But before we tell you what we thought about the dramas of 2010, this is YOUR turn to weigh in and vote for your favorite shows, couples, bromances — and, yes, your big disappointments — in what we’re calling the Beanie Awards. They’re in your hands; give ’em out with care!
FAVORITE DRAMA SERIES OF 2010
Starting off with the big one, vote for your favorite drama of the year, whether that means your pick for an artistic “best” or simply an emotional favorite. The voting list is by no means a comprehensive collection of all the dramas that aired in 2010; it would be too overwhelming to include them all. So we narrowed the list to twenty of the likeliest candidates, and since we realize it may be tough to just pick one, you can select up to three dramas.
FAVORITE COMEDIC DRAMA
Which drama made you laugh, whether with insane antics, witty banter, or a heartwarming sense of humor?
FAVORITE HISTORICAL DRAMA
Some of these are more traditional in their format (such as Dong Yi), while others have fusion elements (like the trendy-romantic vibe in Sungkyunkwan Scandal), and others were downright genre pieces set in the past (sci-fi and paranormal-oriented Joseon X-Files). But they were all set anywhere from a hundred to a thousand years in the past and cloaked in colorful period costumes.
FAVORITE ACTION OR MELODRAMA SERIES
This is a bit of a mishmash of a category, I know. Still, I wanted to separate out these dramas from the rest of the trendy or sageuk crowd.
FAVORITE FAMILY DRAMA
Alas, I can’t offer you much insight on this category, being that I am not quite so avid a follower of this genre as I am the others. However, family series make up a huge part of the airtime on Korean television, so it deserves its voting category.
FAVORITE ROMANTIC PAIRING
Ah, romance. The lifeblood of the Korean drama, particularly the trendy variety. Which pairing tickled your fancy the most? Which couple got your inner fangirl squealing in delight? Which OTP did you root for through all the requisite angst that ran interference during those cursed episodes in the middle when you really just wanted them to kiss already?
BEST KISS
Speaking of kisses… We know that a kiss in K-dramaland isnt ever just a kiss. It’s often so much more — it’s a decision, an epiphany, a game-changer. Which kiss made you squee the loudest? (Or snort in laughter, as the case may be.)
FAVORITE PIGGYBACK RIDE
If kisses are declarations, surely the piggyback ride, seen in practically every kdrama since the beginning of kdrama time, also makes a statement. Such as, “I want to take care of you.” Or maybe it’s more like “I don’t want to take care of you but I care too much to NOT take care of you,” or even “I don’t WANT to care but I can’t help it so I’ll take care of you anyway.” Most loaded means of transportation EVER.
FAVORITE CHARACTER
The charisma and/or appeal of a character is an elusive quality that can make or break a drama: sometimes lovable characters can sustain entire dramas with their charm even when, let’s face it, the rest of the stuff ain’t so good. But when a character gets under your skin and makes you fall in love with them, there’s a certain magic that comes into play. Who did that for you this year?
BEST DRAMA POSSE
Friendship is rarely the focus of a drama, but the presence of a good friend — or several — can elevate a drama and warm your heart. They exult with our heroes when there’s cause for celebration, console them with liquor and sympathy when they’re down, and hold back their hair when they’re really down.
BEST VILLAIN
Villains can be bratty interlopers, crazed madmen (or women), or evil masterminds. All we know is: They spice up dramas and are lots of fun to hate. Who needs boring ol’ Fate to complicate your life when you’ve got enemies like these?
FAVORITE BROMANCE
Boys. Sometimes fighting. Sometimes frolicking. Need I say more?
FAVORITE ALTERNATE PAIRING
If you’re anything like me, you’ve spent many a drama feeling that dread in the pit of your stomach when you realize, Crap, I picked the wrong team. It becomes painfully obvious that the couple you’re rooting for is never gonna make it, often leaving one party out of the loop and broken-hearted. Who was your favorite couple who was Not Meant To Be?
BREAKOUT PERFORMANCE
Breakout doesn’t necessarily mean newcomer, although the two often go hand in hand. The actors in this category may have had other credits to their names, but it was in these selections that they shined, made their presence known, and springboarded to what will likely be greater fame. (Note: Some actors had big roles this year, but have been around or were previously well-known, and therefore were left off the list.)
OVERRATED DRAMA
“Overrated” applies to dramas that had mainstream popularity, but perhaps didn’t deserve the level of attention they got. By the same token, “underrated” applies to dramas that didn’t get as much love, but which you thought deserved more attention.
UNDERRATED DRAMA
DISAPPOINTING ENDING
Don’t you hate it when a drama is doing so well, and carries so much promise, only to fall flat in the final stretch? Even if 95% of a show is solid, a bad final 5% can really cause a drama to plummet in your affections. Sadly, this happens way too frequently.
BIGGEST WASTE OF TALENT
Likewise, it’s a bummer when a drama boasts a fantastic cast or your favorite star… and then fails to use his/her talents. Not only do you feel cheated, but you feel sorry for the actor who got suckered into a role that sorely underutilizes them.
BEST PERM
There was a fair number of male stars rockin’ the curly hair this year, for better or for worse. I KNOW WHO I’M VOTING FOR.
BEST ‘STACHE
With the rise of the “beast-men” trend, we saw a lot more abs, often glistening with sweat (thanks, Chuno), and a LOT more examples of facial hair, from minor scruff to the dreaded pornstache to full-on beards. Who rocked it best?
BEST AND WORST USE OF AN IDOL STAR
As we know, idols are advancing into television dramas with greater frequency these days, to a point where you can hardly throw a stone without hitting a chiseled idol ab. The phenomenon is usually met with some skepticism by viewers who are wary of untrained, inexperienced actors getting leading (or prominent supporting) roles, even as the idols are used to draw in more viewers. Some are bad, sure, but some are surprisingly solid. How did they do in your eyes?

best kiss is defintely that of the hoi hoi couple! especially the one scene taken at the airport when MiHo was about to leave. and of course, the most heartbreaking kiss when MiHo was about to die (as a fox) and DaeWoong eventually went to sleep. :(

Honestly, most 2010 dramas did not leave deep impression, even MGIG and SKKS. The best drama in 2010 so far is Secret Garden, but it's still airing. I'm crossing my fingers that the ending will be good!
BTW, Kim Hyun Joong did impress me with his acting. It's been improved a lot since BOF. The Youtube version of Playful kiss is great. He has potentials so I'm waiting for his next drama or movie.

You're looking for only kissing stuffs. THe playful kiss was the worst drama I have seen among the Korean drama. I love Gumiho. That drama was the best. Jung So Min was the worst actress I have seen. She doesn't know how to act.

okay... i just checked back and the results are not good! hyun joong can't be both best and worst use of idol star! his performance was clearly poor and micky's acting was leagues better than his.
i'm a HUGE *read fly TEN HOURS to another country and purchase VVIP tix (extra V for exclusive meet and greet dinner) to his concert* kim hyun joong STAN but having him win best use of idol star would mean not acknowledging micky's better than most rookies acting performances.
sorry for my rant.... i just.... i'm not even a cassie! far from it.

stans, please be fair! playful kiss isn't underrated. underrated doesn't necessarily mean poor ratings ok? if you've seen iswak and itazura na kiss, you'll know pk was a cheap rip-off merging of both and hyun joong's acting was soooo bad i couldn't even finish it.>,<
maybe hyunjoong doesn't deserve worst use of idol star. maybe. but it doesn't mean he deserves to win best use of idol star. that'd be unfair for his best friend micky.

I agree with x0mi07 and if I will be call a hater from expressing what I fee,so be it, but the truth is Playfull kiss does not deserve to be called underrated, if most it was definetly overated!!!!, and it is an insult to say he was better than Micky.
By the way I do thinks PK is freaking hot but I don't think he is a good actor(yet), period.
Don't take this personal because this poll is just for entertaiment, and like you say we ALL are entitle to our own opinion.

hater? because i have the guts to call out my favorite idol on his poor performance i'm a hater? because i can be objective and put aside my fangirling i'm a hater?!
not all fangirls are hormonal teenagers. with all the money i've spent and am spending on kim hyung joong and limited edition SS501 merchandise, you have NO RIGHT to call me a hater. i've shown my support. thousands of dollars, hours of waiting, and huge amounts of efforts on posters and banners and fan project participation worth of support.
in my eyes, fully supporting my idols means having the ability to tell them where they're lacking. who will i lavish my money and time on if my idol fades into oblivion because his skills are not improving?

I kind of see now why all those KHJ fans jumped all over me when I dissed him on his BOF performance. I liked him in Playful Kiss and think he did a good job. It makes me feel kind of bad when I see people cutting him down so much. I have to say I have learned my lesson and will never down any actor or singer again because I now know how the fans of that actor and singer feel.

Gumiho & Secreat Garden were the best dramas which I have seen for Korean dramas. I give them big hands. Fighting....
Hyun Joong has improved his acting skill; however, I do not buy the dirty kissing scences by the foolish Jung So Min. I almost throw up when JSM did Kissing forcefully OUR HJ. That kissings were the most dirty kisses I've seen in Korean drama. JSM, you're a so dirty girl that you try to seduce our leader. Also, wear the longer skirt when you're in public. You wore the shortest skirt among the girls. Do not show your private part. We don't want to see your dirty area. JSM has no brain, so she does not know how to act in public. Shame on Jung So Min. However, I'm giving my big hands to Shin Min Na in Gumiho. She is a very charming lady compared to the dummy Jung So Min.

I may not like some of the actresses, actors, or even the dramas named above but I don't bash them. I also like some idol stars-turned-actors but I don't disrespect their leading ladies that they have kissed on their dramas. I was cautious about KHJ's acting when I heard he was cast as the lead for PK, but I could say now that he has definitely improved. However, you remind me again why I don't like SS501 fans, esp KHJ fans. They are so immature, crazy, possessive, and obsessive. You're the ones who are brainless and do not know how to act in public. I don't normally reply to brainless comments like yours, but there's just one too many that I've read here and it definitely needs some reproof. There are reasons why people hate Jung So Min.
1stl: she doesn't know how to act even though that her job.
2nd: she tries to seduce Hyun Joong.
3rd: She kissed dirty ways to HJ, which gives viewers aversion effects.
4th: she is a newbie, but she doesn't respect showbiz's seniors.
5th: She is a too short girl and wore the shortest skirt in front of Hyun Joong and walked the steps. We saw almost her dirty part. How dirty is that she tries to seduce HJ.
6th: She initiated too many unnecessary skin ships to our dear leader, making him uncomfortable when camera was not running.

Please don't lump all Kim Hyun Joong fans in with that psycho who is posting as many different posters. She has been all over every blog and fan site posting her nutty, sick comments and trust me she has been getting bashed left and right from Kim Hyun Joong fans. Some blogs have even changed the option of being an anonymous poster just to keep her off their sites. She isn't turning anyone off of Kim Hyun Joong. ToT why is it that the dramas Kim Jae Wook are in, I'm always rooting for the losing couple?!?! Even if those girls didn't deserve his character (Mary from Mary Stayed Out All Night and Jae In from Bad Guy=> ugh. I really dislike Jae In. KJW's performance of Hong Tae Sung in Bad Guy was really good. he was already so damaged, so sad, and it makes me wanna smack Jae In for breaking his heart.), I wanted him to end up with them, so that his character could be happy T^T dramas are evil this way.
I haven't seen most of the dramas on the list, but I liked the kiss between Mary and Jung In the most ;A; it was genuine and sweet dlkfja;slkdfjalksd;fjas;ldkfjadkls;fadfjls
Kim Jae Wook needs the lead role and to end up with the girl in the end!

I voted in all categories except for the family drama as they are too long to follow. as for the fav characters it seems to be dominated by SKKS and SG!!! =D
and my fav friendship has to be SKKS......

i voted for MGIAG for almost every category. it's absolutely the best drama of the year! i watched SKKS too, it's very good but MGIAG is better. i watched SG ep. 1 but it doesn't thrilled me..i'm getting bored of rich but snobbish male lead..haha but i can't run away from that since it's common in korean dramas..

The best dramas: SKKS, Secrete Garden, and GUMIHO.
The worst drama: Playful Kiss.
The best actors & actress: Kim SJ, Youchun, Shim Mi Na, & Hyun Bin.
The worst actress: Jung So Min, her acting is terrible.

while i have my own opinion on the best and worst, and while i respect your right to an opinion, i disagree about jung so min's acting ability. oh hani may have been an infuriating character and playful kiss's plot lacked intelligence and any form of development, but i think jung so min pulled it off the top-notch, and really got into her character.

The best actor was Lee Shing Ki.
The best actress was Yu Ah in.
The dirtiest and the foolish actress was Jung So Min.
The biggest looser was Kim Hyun Joong. He could choose a better drama not the dirty one.
He is much better in Singing than acting.

BIGGEST WASTE OF TALENT. I do not understand why Kim Hyun Goong was not included this line. His talents were washed away by the tainted role of playful kiss.
On the other hand, his friend, Yoochun, showed a good acting skill in SKSS. People do like memoriable stories not but so many kissing stuffs on TV. The scences could be reduced to some not all the time kissing, hugging, and bed scences.
On the contrary, Gumiho gives fresh impressions to viewers. Their kissing scences were pure and enjoyable to viewers compared to playful kisses which give viewers hated feelings to PK. That is the reason Korean people refused to see it. The people who are supporting are mostly teenagers who love KHJ. What do they learn seeing their idol doing the erotic scenes on the National TV continually? Most modest people in Korea do not support playful kiss due to the reasons. In addtion, Jung So Min did too many unnessary skinships to Kim Hyun Joong while not running camara. Why did she do? Did she try to seduce Hyun Joong?
She needs to stop initiating skinships!!!!!!! That causes people judge her.

I agree with the above comment. Jung So Min must stop doing unnecessary skin ships to our leader. She is not a professional actress. Most professional actresses know what to act and how to act. Look at Gu Hye Sun in BOF. She did not initiate unnecessary skin-ships to Hyun Joong. She knows how to act compared to Jung So Min, who doesn't know how to be a good actress. Jung So Min needs to grow up like GHS. She is an immature girl.

It took me a while to see Secret Garden - partly b/c of the idea of soul-swapping seemed too much like "Freaky Friday" for me and also in case I did find it appealing, substantial amt. of English subs. OMG - this is my other ultra fave drama so far! (For me, the writer has a tendency to have disappointing endings.)
I look at the results and figure people haven't watched it yet - my gosh it's got witty writing, and Hyun Bin is just doing a terrific job! Most of the characters are just so engaging!

Yeah, I think the two surprising things for me in the Beanie awards choices were 1) that Jo Pilyeon from Giant didn't make the best villain list when he was basically a raging socio-path and 2) that kim so yeon and park shi hoo's angtsy, dramatic kiss in prosecutor princess didn't make the best kiss category. For those of you who saw PP, you know what I'm talking about! At the end of ep 13?

The most favorite romatic pairing: Lee Sung Ki and Shin Min Na. They are an adorable coupe. The sory and paring gave viewers fresh, happy, and enjoyment.
The most hated pairing: Kim Hyun Joong and Jung So Min. Jung So Min was an immature actress, who does not know what is acting about. She tries to take advantage of KHJ's success instead of her trying to work hard by herself.

I don't know why they're bashing Jung So Min, I think she's prettier than most Korean actresses and can act naturally, too. Playful Kiss doesn't really have a good plot but she pulled it off as a newcomer.
It's really true that there is such thing as Moon Jae Shin Virus. This is the first time that I keep on replaying and replaying scenes of a Korean Drama and I've been watching Korean Dramas for more than five years already. I only replay a Korean Drama after several years have passed already like My Girl, Stairway to Heaven, etc. but I don't know why SKKS got me hooked especially on Guhro's scenes. I told my daughter that maybe because Jaeshin didn't get the girl that's why I keep on replaying their romantic moments together.
