Yesterday I found "Prince's First Love" on Dramafever.com. It was broadcast in 2004. Has anyone else watched it yet? I thought the main leads were very well cast, but the cinematography reminded me of many Tawainese dramas, where there is a lot of music/songs playing and wasted visuals of the characters no dialogue.

I supported the wrong guy throughout. Didn't know who was the lead actor. Found out only in the last ep who it was. That was the guy who won the girl. The one I thought was the lead didn't get the girl. First and only kor drama which left me gasping at the end.

I know...right? I had to skip to the end episode because I couldn't take the suspense of who was going to get the girl!

Wow. First thing I do, check the news before I go to class, and then, earthquake in Japan. Wow. In the past few years how many big natural disasters have happened? I know it's silly, but an apocalypse in 2012, like in the movie, doesn't seem so farfetched when we are facing "mini"-apocalypses, so to say, in the present. It is reassuring that Japan is one of the countries that is best with dealing with this sort of thing, contrasted with the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, where people were completely thrown off guard and mass chaos ensued....

In other news, I think the lack of a real crack drama these days has pulled me into a downer mood so I've been watching melodramas or darker dramas (Midas and Thornbirds) or rewatching stuff that made me cry previously (various dramas)... Midas is weird. I don't sympathize with Jang Hyuk at all. In fact, I know where the story is going to progress and all I want to see is Noh Minwoo end up with Lee Minjung, even though I feel like that might not be endgame, although it could be possible, considering my predicted endgame as of now is... Jang Hyuk ending up alone and poor by himself. Huh. As for Thornbirds, Joo Sangwook's character confuses me. Like which person are you actually into?! Don't get it. And the entire time I sorta just have this urge to punch Kim Minjung's character.

Is anybody else into Chinese historical dramas? Like, seriously, I mentioned this a few OT's back, but ppl ignored me (I know, it's pretty easy to do that for me, LOL)... but yeah. If you are, I would highly highly HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend Da Ming Gong Ci or Da Ming Palace or whatever. It is probably my favorite drama of all time. The speech/dialogue is so Shakesperian and beautiful. The cinematography is beautiful, too. The entire drama has a ponderous theme... omg I seriously love it so, so much. It's like so beautifully tragic.

But yeah....... I started rewatching another Chinese drama, Da Qing Hou Gong... watched it a long time ago. LOL. And made me cry many, many tears. Why am I in a weepy mode? Sheesh.

It's interesting that just yesterday I was reading on Yahoo.com about the moon changes. And then, "BOOM!" a huge earthquake/tsunami occurs. Even though they say there is no links... Interesting coincidence.

Yeah the moon controls tides, but tsunamis come from earth plate movements/earthquakes that occur underwater.. But that is interesting

I am with you about Midas- for some reason, I just cannot relate emotionally with JH character or even LMJ character. I like Chinese historical dramas. If you like war ones, I would recommend Three Kingdoms or sometimes called Romance of the Three Kingdoms. It is supposed to be over 80 episodes. I am into 30 episodes so far. I will try Da Ming Palace- thanks.

I feel bad for LMJ, but I'm not connecting with her really. So basically I feel nothing for the main couple. Total problem with this drama. I am almost always the hardcore "main lead" shipper, but in this case the drama totally made me gravitate towards NMW and LMJ.

I mean, why are we supposed to even support JH as a protagonist? He gives up on his failing relationship with LMJ rather easily, runs after money and power with greed, does some stupid things that totally break his relationship with LMJ... I mean are you an idiot for going into a hotel room with some other woman not your fiancee??

NMW on the other hand... not only is he great eye candy, I feel bad for his character. And while he's not like his sister and completely manipulative due to his birth circumstances, I feel like he's yet to be, well, pushed to his potential.

Required fields are marked *

And also, YES! I LOVE LOVE LOVE Da Ming Palace. LOL.

I've seen Three Kingdoms, both versions of it. I saw the older version when I was a kid and the recent new one.. I have mixed feelings about the new one. While it was obviously a lot more visually stunning (this is from a technological standpoint), it also changed up the storyline in ways I'm not sure I was comfortable with. And some of the acting was a little weak... but it was very very beautiful and nice to look at.

Required fields are marked *

Yeah, I want LMJ to end up with NMW...if the drama would ever let them have more scenes together..sheesh.

I have to confess I have no clue what's going in the drama (only a very basic idea) but I'd be so much more invested if they let the second lead actually get the girl. lol

I know, I'm doing the half-watch-half-pay-attention thing and tune in only when Noh Minwoo and Lee Minjung take the screen. LOL. I just stopped caring about Jang Hyuk's character's MUST-GET-MONEY-AND-POWER gimmicks, because honestly, I'm just not very invested in that.

Yup love them...but they're often hit or miss for me. Really digging the new fusion historical dramas (i.e. young, pretty actors who can actually act with gorgeous cinematography and TONS of scheming). Really started off with Huang Xiao Ming's Da Han Tian Zi. Check out some of the new stuff: Schemes of a Beauty and Palace Lockheart. Not bad.

On that note, there's a new one coming out called Bu Bu Jing Xin, the original novel (I think) that started off this whole time-travel-back-to-Qing-dynasty trend that seems to be prevalent.. It has Li Shi Shi and Wu Qi Long as well as Aaron Cheung (who I love from watching too much TVB stuff LOL). It's pretty much the same as Palace Lockheart (and technically Palace Lockheart got its idea from Bu Bu Jing Xin) in which the girl time travels back to Qing dynasty and then is stuck between the 4th prince (the future emperor) and the 8th prince, although I think she chooses the 4th prince here.

There's also been a huge resurgence with the palace plotting theme. I feel like this trend pretty much smarted with the success of TVB's "War and Beauty." And then everything else sorta was rehashes of it in different settings or other modifications. I really liked Da Han Tian Zi, though - that was where Huang Xiaoming won me over.... and made me totally forget how forgettable he was in Princess of Returning Pearl. I think that was also a sort of turning point in his career, too.

IMO, the above-mentioned are lighter historical dramas that I really watch for entertainment and one where I put to silence my "reasoning historical" brain, which would be whining about historical inaccuracies. While Da Ming Gong Ci definitely has its flaws, I don't think it falls into this category. I watched DMGC like.. years ago. When I was still in junior high. It is just so...... elegant and beautiful without the total sombre tone that pure, pure historical dramas have. It's very, very Shakesperian.

Poor clichique. I'm tilting my head in sympathy for your being ignored. So I'm replying to your post.

The only historical chinese dramas I watch were a long time ago. Enter the Empress starring this pretty girl with dimples....she was called Qian Qian in the show? I liked that one. Started off happy but ended up a tearfest. There was a sequel but the lead actor was replaced by this short, pudgy looking actor. So I stopped watching it. I love historical chinese movies though. Watched Chow Yuen Fatt and Michelle Yeoh in Crouching Tiger. Moved me to tears. So beautiful. Also watched Hero with Jet Li. Loved it too. So whimsical with so many layers and colours, literally and figuratively. Saw 14 Blades recently but thought it was just meh.

Love Buffet ends tomorrow. Too bad you didn't give it a chance. Hope she'll end up with the guy I like. After that, I don't know what I'm going to watch. Saw a bit of Mike He's show but couldn't get into it. I don't know, everything seems so forced....Mike He's not a very good actor, is he? And I think he had more chemistry with Rainie.

Dear Pipit:

I hope you will still want to be best friends with me after I give you and update on Kim Rae Won. Apparently, I was wrong about it being only 20 months in the military. According to various articles on celebrities timeframes in the military. These Are only calculations based on the solid dates I found. So I estimate that Kim Rae Won will get out in June 2011 not April 2011 as originally stated in the last OT.
Date In Date Out # of Days Actor
3/23/2009 1/23/2011 671 kim jae won dates solid

I'm afraid you'll have to be my best friend for a very long time ^-^
You have to do something extremely unforgivable like stealing my numero uno guy (who is a very very top secret) before I heartbrokenly let you go.
But even when that happens in the end I might decide to share him with you.
Just ask Jomo if you plan to use that trick to break up with me. Once you've agreed to be my bestfriend I'll stick to you like a magic glue.
I think I should start calling you Chinggu with that particular tone used by the annoying friend in Kdrama ^-^.

today is a sad day for Japan & its neighbors, this a.m. i was awaken by my sister at 3 am Pac. time breaking the news about a possible tsunami here in the pac. ocean where i'm only 10 min. away from the beach! my heart was pounding & knees shaking literally, i was very pessimistic hearing it's devastated part of Japan! My heart goes out to the victims & this tragic e/quake reminds me right away of the ones in 2004 around Indonesia where 300, 000?? ppl perished. Thank God it's only 2 ft high that was supposed to hit the coastline so that's a relief!

My prayers to those victims of this devastating tsunami in Japan!

I'm just reeling from the shock of it all really and yet I know no-one even remotely linked to Japan. Was going to ask if you do.
It's pretty catastrophic, can only hope and pray things will be OK once again for those affected.

In other news:
Saengchori 19. OMG! Janna! OMGGGG!

.... OK, just tryna be funny there.
But that was seriously an AWESOME episode! *squeee* Gripping stuff. And ever since Ji-min sunbae grew a little facial hair I've been like Min-sung... who? Ji-min Sunbae grew sexy overnight, literally.
Too late cos we're nearing the end.

And I'm eating my words... Momentarily. Dae Jo Yeong is no longer boring... It's INSANELY good, once again.
I mean, there's this one scene where Choi Soo-jong and Kim Myung-soo (aka. Comrades' Sergeant Lee and Yong-taek respectively -- who were fatal enemies in Comrades) stand side by side to fight against their enemy: Jo Pil-yeon... the latter stands alone outnumbered but manages to fight them off as best he can... Until at long last one of his men comes to his aide. And it's none other than *drumroll* Yoo Chan-seong. Hahahah! The meta! The Irony.

Interestingly enough, The American chapter of Red Cross has accepted donations through text messaging (and that's our laziest and best way of donating! Yeah texting!) But the UK chapter says that the Japanese Red Cross isn't asking for international support. I think that might change within the coming days/weeks. If not for this disaster, it'll be wisely banked for the future (I hope) so that's who I donated to.

Hello OT readers 'waves'

I've been following the recaps and started My Girl based on the ravings here.I wanted to watch Delightful Girl Choon Hyang but got sucked into My Girl.

Lee Dong Wook is HOT.Why does he have to smoke as well?I have been one traumatised KD fan since the whole Hyun Bin smoking photo (pun not intended) and discovered ALL my hotties smoke.SIGH.He is still hot though and I love his voice :-)

That is not why I am here..I have to ask a question because everyone here watches so much more dramas than I do.

Lee Da Hae.The question-is that how she normally acts?

The kind explanation I have is-her posture seems a bit odd.I've only seen it on :

a. tortoise sticking their neck out of the shell
b. when you want to appear thinner on a photo-they ask you to stick your neck forward so you don't have a double chin
c. older people with hunched over with osteoporosis and have that thrusting neck forward posture.

Is is driving me crazy!!I mean trying to see her as a romantic lead when she is all neck out front and sideways!!

Someone brought up Baker Kim Tak Goo and it reminded me of a question I've had for a while now. There's a certain type of drama where the protagonist(s) learn a trade and plot follows their growth, triumph, and ultimate mastery of the trade (i.e. Kim Tak Goo, Gourmet, Dream High, God of Study). What is this type of drama called?

Okay I'm in a reminiscent mood and decided to re-pick up a TW drama favorite of mine.... My Lucky Star.

It seems like not that many ppl like it... or at least when people mention TW dramas this one seems to get left out. Personally, I forget about it, but I think it's b/c I've watched way too many dramas in my lifetime (I joke not.. I started watching dramas as a child; granted, at that time, my parents sanctioned it and they were usually wuxia or historical dramas and by like 12 I had seen about 100 or so dramas already so just image how many I've seen at my age of 20...).

Can I just spaz about it? About the great chemistry between the leads? Even though I have major problems with Jimmy Lin's weird stilted movements when he tries to emote (can it be... sometimes he's even worse than SSH, but I think it's b/c he looks like a little kid so it looks even worse, but gosh, this man does not age... he still looks 20 at the age of 40-something). But this is one instance where I like the guy seeking revenge on girl over marriage... UNLIKE AUTUMN'S CONCERTO. Which I liked. But that "revenge" plot was so...... childs-play. Left me feeling cheated because ultimately it just ended in nothing. And I could've written a better revenge arc.

BUT YEAH. MY LUCKY STAR. One of my favorite TW dramas hands down. Totally recommend it for those who have not seen it. Oh and it has Yoo Hana, you know, the girl in Paradise Ranch (which... seeing the comments on the OT, I'm almost tempted to start but can't after thinking about Changmin's eyes......)

Required fields are marked *

Love My Lucky Star! Even though it was a TW drama, it was surprisingly tame (you know how acting/situations in TW dramas can be super overblown). Even though Yoo Hana's voice is dubbed, it was enjoyable enough that it didn't bother me. I heard that the producer picked Yoo Hana for auditioning after seeing her pic in some magazine. That was some great luck and intuition!

I remember Jimmy Lin when I was 7 and watching a video of him rocking that New Year's Song. Be still my little-girl's-heart. I think he was like 18 back then.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2s5T8wp8jU0

His face is a bit rounder now, but I can't believe he's still so young looking.

Oh my god. HE LOOKS THE SAME. WHAT ARE HIS BEAUTY SECRETS?!?!?! I bet he could sell it to millions of women and make billions of dollars.

I don't remember what I first saw him in. It was so long ago..... Ridiculous.

AGREED, though. I love how My Lucky Star wasn't so over-the-top like the TW drama norm. It gets so tiring after a while. But also yeah that was some great judgment from the PD... the two of them have amazing chemistry too.... still makes me cry some scenes, after rewatching them.... sniffle sniffle

I'm pretty new to the K-drama world, but I totally love Dramabeans. It's my go-to site for K-drama news and snark. I just want to thank Javabeans, Girlfriday and the rest of the DB crew for all the awesomeness on this site. You guys haven't led me astray yet!

Also (and I hope it's OK to plug here, since it's a free-for-all), I just wanted to invite everyone who's interested to check out my fanfic writing journal: http://akane47.livejournal.com/

I have a couple of You're Beautiful stories already posted there and am currently finishing up a Sungkyunkwan Scandal fic. I'm also up to my ears in plot bunnies (including one for a Dream High fic), so I don't think I'm going to stop writing anytime soon!

Happy weekend, everyone; and of course thoughts and prayers to those affected by the earthquake in Japan and the subsequent tsunami/s.

Actually I never liked Biscuit Teacher (shock! horror!) and I think Gong yoo was the only (to me) saving grace of that drama. Was I the only one who was really distracted by the fact the students were so ovbiously not teenagers, and that they had so many side plots that dragged out the main storyline? I think he was much better in coffee prince.

I liked Biscuit Teacher and Star Candy too.

Interesting fact: The show Broadcast period was 2005-Apr-13 to 2005-Jun-02.

At that time Gong Yoo was 25 years old(07/10/1979), playing a teenager. He is, in fact/real life, ten months older than Gong Hyo Jin(04/04/1980). She played "Na Bo Ri" his teacher who was also 25 years old at that time.

He is so young looking!

Two weeks without the internet meant only one thing. Marathon of an old kdrama that I hadn't seen.

Choice: Baker king, Kim Tak Gu!

Why: It was the highest rated drama so it HAD to be good, right?

Verdict: It was fine .. until the end. LAME reason as to why the baddies let KTG and his mum go. Actually, a lot of the stuff that happened at the end was very frustrating. Not sure why it was so popular but I can see how the motto of the story was something that related to a lot of parents.

On the plus side, the other half sat through it all with me. Lots of quality time together. But am grateful that internet is back on. :)

janna:
You need to be watching Gisaeng Tales 15. Now.
Sonja has washboard abs, literally! That was hilarious!
Damo runs off to Japan and broods at some hot springs. Pictorial evidence -- such a pretty scene.

The Dr, (not 'Doc'. *sniff* I miss Doc) is back. Uh-oh! Do you know the actor playing him is Chae-rim's little brother?

And hey, because everyone and anyone ate out at posh restaurants last episode, this episode they made a point of everyone eating home-cooked meals -- at home. Omo! These people have kitchens!?

But all in all... Hallelujah for plot progress!

She says she watches it for the "story"...

I'm going to go back to the first episode... and screen cap every cake eating scene. Why are they always eating cake? Cakecakecakecake. ffff. It looks like Sonja high-jacked someones torso with tv-magic. Does not compute.

The Dr. is in again. Maybe we'll see him more. I see the resemblance to his sister.

Plot progress still didn't make higher ratings, but yeah. I enjoy going more than a snails pace.

How did I know you'd have a picture of Damo. Literally while watching the scene I knew you'd be screen capping some of that.

Yeah, the story. And the pretty, pretty sakura.

Oh, we are definitely going more than snail's pace now, phew! Episode 16 was pretty much on fire!

If there's one breakout star from this, it has to be Rara. She is freakin' FANTASTIC!
How's about this for a love triangle: Gong-joo - Sonja - Rara!
Sonja... Always such a scene stealer.

All in all, this episode totally broke my heart. Awww, Saran. I have no empathy for Damo, sorry.

And did you say something about cakes? Haha!

If only Rara was drunk all the time.

Also? Bring it. You know Gong-joo would hit a girl again, but Rara has some fierce kicking. Sonja fixing the ladies hair.. haha "Now ladies..."

It's the lift scene that got me, more than anything. While they're still snarking back and forth, he steps in between them and in a kind of subtle/not too obvious way he shields Gong-joo from Rara. Oh My Goodness. I Love Him. <3 <3 <3
But... He's too young.

Was just browsing some Korean sites and more than anyone else it's Gong-joo who seems to be creating a really positive buzz. One netizen said she looks like a cross between Gong Hyo-jin and Tang Wei. Bang on target, yo. I could definitely see the GHJ resemblance but there was more and it was bugging me trying to pinpoint.

In other news, I'm more connected to Japan than I thought. My entire vanity is filled with Japanese products, and I get almost everything shipped from Japan.
Also I've been collecting the Starbucks Sakura tumblers every spring and I emailed the guy from Japan who I usually get them from to ask him how things are. He says Tokyo's luckily all well, there will be delays in services but pretty soon all will be back to normal again.
... But then the Tsunami hit areas... Ohhh... Man.

*hugs janna* It's all hitting me too late.
