Have you seen the Stephen Colbert/Jimmy Fallon/et. al. version of that song? The lyrics aren't any better, but it's hilarious: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eLAMhTorPCk

That is how the video should have been made, LOL!

And I can't love Jung Il-woo in just 49 Days - I need 365 days because he is adorbs :-p (I haven't seen any of the episodes yet, but I definitely will just to see him!)

Thanks for the bday wishes everyone! I thought Daemul would be more heavy and serious but actually it's quite lighthearted sometimes! I mean yes, there are a bunch of scenes were politicians scheme and strategize, and Go Hyun Jung screams a lot, but I think Kwon Sang Woo actually has some great comedic timing and I'm loving his character!

I'm on episode 12 now where it seems the mood is getting more and more serious...but I'll keep watching since I am actually interested in political dramas. I want to see more of how Go Hyun Jung's character becomes the strong female president that we saw in ep. 1. Right now, she's being dragged around by those who are more powerful than her...

I really loved the love story and kwon sang woo totally won me over in this drama. I had bad dreams about the mosquitoes in the first episodes, reminded me too much of Pomeroon in the rainy season! I don't think she ever becomes the strong president. It takes a similar road that city hall did with mi rae but isn't bothersome because the continuity is good. Or it makes sense.

MY weekend plan is to sleep as much as possible while watching hong sisters dramas to become/ or not to be a fan of the hong sisters. I'm up to couple or trouble and I might rewatch my girl. I like most of delightful girl choon hyang. I especially loved the sweet to villainous second lead guy. I really wished he would get the girl, even at the end. Is it just me or does that drama seem to have a piece of every plot?

jojo,

Thanks! I went and read the article. He is a very, very good marksman. But that doesn't seem surprising. Hyun Bin seems to have a personality that drives him to excel at whatever he does. That has its good points and its bad points.

I feel a bit sad that the Korean Marines seem to be tracking his every move like paparazzi and posting it for all to see. Where is his privacy? I sure hope they don't make big waves and post pictures of him failing at something. Also, I hope there isn't external pressures created because of all the pictures and posts. He is only human, after all.

Can someone help me find a DVD of Antique Bakery for my sister's bachelorette party, please? I just saw it after reading about it on this site, and thought it would make a great addition to the "hot guys and chocolate" gift basket the bridesmaids are making for her. I scoured the Web for it but surprisingly no luck. It needs to have English subs and play in the US.

Eternal gratitude, good karma, and long life to those who help, and when you die, I'm sure Jung Il-woo will come collect your soul.

Is anyone watching 'New Gisaeng story"? I had thought it looked like an interesting concept, but so far, it doesn't really have much to do with Gisaengs, and just seems to be another 'Switched at birth/ poor girl meets rich guy' story.
The singer Song Dae Kwan has a part in this show, working in some undefined job at the Gisaeng house. My MIL, who lives with us, was once a good friend of his mother, and well remembers his early struggles to become a singer.
I'm also watching "The Duo"-yes, another 'Switched at birth' story, but very enjoyable so far-it has me hooked.

I really want to like the duo but the rich kid/poor kid ( the bratty rich kid who is the son of the nanny) is really annoying. While the story is somewhat interesting the episode I saw couldn't keep me from midas which has lost me.

New Gisaeng ep 22, Sa ran trains as Gisaeng & Damo is going out of his mind! Spoiler if I say more. Among the ongoing drama series I'm watching, New Gisaeng has the strongest/passion between a young man & a woman (Saran & Damo) like a fiery tango relationship.

Can you hear my heart looks interesting...ep1 & 2. Looking forward their adulthood.

Twinkle twinkle/Sparkling is getting stronger & more passionate...made me cry...supposed to have been baby switched at birth 25 yrs ago. One of them is really bad almost evil.

Midas I like it but bland on the love story.

Thorn Birds my favorite...a thriller. 2 girls, best friends. One of them so bad, the other too good. Always can't wait for the next episode.

The Dou, bland on the love story. I like the dou friendship. At last at ep 18 the wet nurse gets confronted! I look forward for the coming soon drama series!

The bad girl in Twinkle twinkle is the one who's been raised in the poor family. She was the one who found out that she belongs to the rich family. You can't help but admire the character of the girl raised in the rich family. You can't help crying for her & with her. The bad girl is so bad I'm dreading to watch ep 16...but its one of my ongoing drama favorites. I will keep watching...I want to see how the good girl will overcome the shocking change of her life...how the bad girl will scheme to get all back from the other girl thinking they all belong to her by birth right...love interest too. I hope that the story moves fast...not drag the pain too long.

Hwang Geum Ran, the bad girl, is really hard for me to watch. Prolly mostly because she wanted to marry Mr. Slimey Braces even though he wanted another girl.
Get some pride, chick!

And now that she is rich, she is still acting like the world owes her. She won the freaking lottery, and she's still mopey?

I love Han Jung Won (JunPyo's noona,) too. She does drunk really well.
I can't wait until her first kiss with Song Seung Joon, Editor in chief.

I have looked for Iron Empress drama to watch online so I can look at Kim Suk Hoon more, but most of the links are broken...

0

yeah pacing is everything in melos. It seems I was right about this being a rip off of I'll give you everything. I've decided to watch it like I've been watching flames of desire 10 or 20 minutes each episode.

Also loving Twinkle Twinkle.. made me cry too on one or two episodes already.. they have the best senior actors from the latest kdrama offerings so far.. love their switched at birth stories.. also love the portrayals of Kim Hyunjo and Lee Yuri. In fairness, this is only the 2nd time I've seen Lee Yuri, she's the sweet girl from the I love you, don't cry drama with Lee Jungjin.

already gave up on the bland Midas though I was impressed with the first few episodes.. 1st time I've watched the boss lady - her English and Chinese blew me away!!

loving Thorn birds too.. I'm such a sucker for melos that's why..

love 49 days bcoz of Ilwoo, LYW and JHJ..

I like most of I love you don't cry. But I gave it up when she married her best friend and her past started to come to light. I had just had enough crying ( personal tears, you know!) I saw her in daring woman that was a better role. I wanted to watch twinkle, twinkle for lee yuri but I'm not really up to a melo right now and I'll give you everything had a crazy turn and so will this drama.

i think you should def. give it another try. i only saw the first 10 episodes or so of i'll give you everything but from what i've seen of twinkle twinkle, it's so much better. the lead character is so endearing and while yes, i don't like the "evil" girl. you can totally see where she's coming from-gambling father, mother not allowing her to go to college, lame fiance(her fault tho) and to find out that they aren't even her birth parents.

i'm also liking both moms and the kid uncle storyline is funny and refreshing. even the minor characters like the poor little girl being forced to spit out english constantly is funny.

overall the pace and character development is good. probably the best drama playing currently imo.

Happy Friday! I am so behind in watching kdramas right now (a cold+multitude of tests has not allowed for kdramas to fit into my schedule), but hopefully this weekend will allow me some time to feed the addiction.

Anyway, I don't know if these has been mentioned at dramabeans or not, but I'll post it anyway since it's pretty awesome.

If you live in the Washington DC area, starting today (April 8) until June 8, the Freer Sackler Gallery of Art will be holding free screenings of Korean movies as part of their Korean Film Festival. Some of the movies include Secret Reunion, Breathless, Poetry, Oki's Movie, Possessed, Hahaha, Old Partner, Paju, The Housemaid, and lots more.

Some of the movies are also (or only) showing at the AFI Silver Theatre in Silver Spring Maryland, like I Saw The Devil. Those screenings I believe aren't free, but it's still a good opportunity.

Here's the website for more information: http://www.asia.si.edu/events/koreanfilm

Happy Friday everyone! I hope your week was a great one! 49 days, hmm... I read the recaps (thanks so much!) and I'm itching to watch it.

But then I'm hesitant. I don't want to jinx it but when I watch a drama as it is airing, I feel like the ending will disappoint me for some reason.

For instance, Secret Garden and Sungkyunkwan Scandal just didn't end the way I expected it. I'm scared that I could get my hopes up for this drama and get burned... Maybe I'll hold off until it's finished. I could be wrong. What do you all suggest?

So... against my better judgment, I watched about half of Smile, Donghae.

Anyone watched that yet?

Required fields are marked *

You know, I understand your feeling. I almost always drop a drama that I watch while it's airing. I think part of the reason the drama doesn't betray me too much when I watch it later on is that I get into a kind of head funk where anything is okay because of the anticipation.

0
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

Exactly! I'm glad I'm not the only one feeling that way! A false security feeling that it'll turn out alright, even if I heard vague comments about it from others... I sincerely hope 49 Days doesn't let me down.

0

Required fields are marked *

Same here. I watched Secret Garden, My Princess, Dream High, and Mary Stayed Out All Night as they were airing, but I couldn't stick with them until the end, as they were airing. I stuck with Dream High and Secret Garden until the last episodes, but saw the final episodes almost a month after airing. Secret Garden's ending really irritated me.

I much prefer marathoning a K-drama in sets of 4 episodes, because I feel like I get a lot more from watching multiple episodes. Plus the payoff comes a lot faster.

I'm in the same boat as you right now and I've tried to start watching a few times, without success. I've heard from a few people that this is a good drama to marathon, so I'm probably going to wait until the last few episodes to marathon the drama, so I'm hyped up like the rest of the fans for the finale.

Hope that helps! Share what you plan to do to, since two heads are better than one!!

I also stuck with SG and SKKS eventhough 2 eps from the ending I've lost my enthusiasm and interest.. their endings were kinda letdown maybe bcoz I find something off with their execution...

The best endings so far for me from 2010 kdramas I've watch which is quite a sum I tell you are My GF is a Gumiho and Coffee House. I could also add Baker King too, I guess. Love the pairings there esp. Majun and Eugene's character to bits plus the idea that their noona which has the best qualification for heading the family's corporation did get it after all.

0

Required fields are marked *

Loved Baker King also! One of my favorite dramas, even with the crying.
The ending though, besides the family dynamics was the romance... I was so confused when I saw they had a daughter at the end. I felt cheated. But that could've just been me being dramatic.

Maybe I should give "My Girlfriend's a Gumiho" a try then...? I only watched the first two episodes before i dropped it.

You should!! As bonafide javabeans and esp girlfriday's avid followers, MGiaG is a must-watch!!

On re-watch (I've lost count here hehe), I usually ff on some stuff with LSG with other characters beside Miho. But when Daewoong and Miho are onscreen, their dynamics and chemistry are OTT. Pls do watch it, one of the best dramas from 2010.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

You really should watch it. It's a gem of a drama, with wackiness, romance, noble idiotness, and a whole lot of supernatural influence to make it stand out above the rom-com that came out during the same time. I especially loved the way that this drama ended and felt that the hours I invested were (for the most part) worth it.

If this is your first Hong Sister's drama, then I would probably recommend that you watch an earlier drama of theirs, because the supernatural backstory can get a tad wearisome. But if you already worship at the shrine of the Hong sisters, then by all means, watch it!

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

I was also hesitant to watch 49 days because there have been some pretty shoddy endings to recent dramas I've watched and loved (Dream High ending was good but I wasn't Crack to me). I only started watching 49 Days because it seemed really interesting to me and I thought that while I would like it, it wouldn't be addictive at all...but then I got addicted!

I'm going to get all negative here and say that most kdramas have endings that I find mediocre.

you probably have that feeling because the guy who was always great to the girl doesn't get her. Why do women like so much work! I've decided to choose the sweet guy from now on. Anyone giving me a hard time can suck it! Although, I'm always most attracted to those guys.

0

Required fields are marked *

It's not really that- most of the time I do ship the jerk with the main female lead, but I just feel like the jerk should jump through a few more hoops in order to get the girl to really like him. It sucks how he has it so easy while someone nice has to struggle so hard. And like Emily below says, the ending is often too abrupt or just boring. I feel like endings should have the same charm as the beginning episodes so that I would want to watch the series over again.

So true. I have yet to find a k-drama ending I'm totally happy about... And it's usually because the girl finally chooses the guy who was a jerk. Or the ending is too abrupt.

ughhh i think smile, donghae is one of the worst daily dramas ever! okay, i haven't watch that many long series, but this one is pretty lame. the cooking competition drags and drags. the mother was adopted to america but can't speak english other than "anna" and "carl laker"? the hotel owner's son is a douchebag. the ex-girlfriend has like 2 facial expression -scheming and nervous she'll be found out. the lead girl is semi-annoying, scratch that, really annoying! in the last episode i saw, all she did was cry and wail endlessly when she found donghae gone. and her romance with donghae lacks any chemistry. ugh i can go on about this drama.

I would totally love a season 2 as well!! I just think it's sad that the price for fame is the cost of your own health. I mean really... I know life is stressful and crazy for them but... with a face and personality like that how many of us would really care if he gained a couple pounds here and there? He doesn't have to look like a stick 24/7/365 days in a year for us to love him.

Hyun Bin's appeal died when I saw his cigarette photos too. I think it's just that... no matter how hard I try I end up thinking about how irritated he must be if he can't smoke when he wants to. It's like the charming man's replaced by someone who doesn't really care much for people as much as he does for his hourly kick. :( Maybe it's cause I've seen how agitated people can be but it totally warps personalities.

Maybe it is just me, I find these fashion magazines are lack of concern about how dangerous smoking is.

In my country, cigarette CFs are not allowed airing in the prime time hour and the CF also are not allowed showing the real cigar (you know the white thing with red end and smoke come from it). The advertising people have to be creative enough to keep promoting the specialty of the cigarette product with just figurative image. Despite how much I hate smoking habit and cigarette, I find cigarette CF is interesting. Though I still wish all these CFs are stopped for good. Even with all the restriction, still a lot of smokers out there smoking without sense of guilty at all :(

"There are no ugly woman." Only lazy ones!
Well I can say that I just find out once again that "Beauty" has a price for some of us , while for others beauty comes free of charge.

Take my daughter for example, she is 25 years old with 2 kids, her height is @ 5.3' and she wights @ 100lb, her metabolism is so fast that she can eat 5 to six square meals a day and she wont gain any weight, the only time that she gains weight is when she's been pregnant, only to go back to her original weight in about 3 weeks.

I am back at the gym exercising, and man oh man, its harder the older I get, I work my legs really hard and now I am feeling the pain, I was 128 lb when I got married and I feel like a "big fat piglet" now days.

The mental part is the hardest one, but I got to keep telling myself, that there is light at the end of the tunnel, I am starting to get back in shape little by little, and even tough I do not look as handsome as when I was 25 years old, at 48 I can still look if not handsome at least healthy.

Amg1! You are not "Ugly," only lazy, so get your butt back to the gym!!!!!

Happy Friday to Yall...!!!!!!! And happy Gym time! : O }

People do it to keep their weight down and alter their voices. I'm not advocating it! Don't do it anyone it is bad for your health and the health of others. over 90% of the women who die from lung cancer have never smoked.

Hello everyone, I am new to this board in the sense that I have been lurking in the shadows for a couple of months now and decided to finally make an appearance on the TGIF open thread....someone mentioned in the last thread that Sunny Happiness was good (t-drama) and while I love K-dramas more, I am finding that I really like this one....

Taiwanese romcoms tend to be cute and a little over the top. There are quite a few that I've enjoyed. I also like some of their dramas.

I particularly like the ones starring Vic Zhou. I find their plot to be different from each other.

I highly recommend Black & White. Mars is also good.

It was so nice to seen Mike He in a romcom again. He's so handsome and cute. His face seems to have leaped out of a manga.

Yes, Mike He is sexy. Did anyone notice that the guy who played his brother in Sunny Happiness looks ALOT like Sun (red-haired, pretty, fey boy) in Secret Garden? I loved Sun (I think that was his character name)...
I am currently marathon-ing Sunny Happiness.... it feels like my life if watching dramas and everything else is incidental... does anyone else carry their laptop into the washroom so as not to pause in the middle of a good scene even though nature has been banging on the door for the last 45 minutes??
If I could carry my monitor and CPU with me, I totally would! LOL

Thanks for the welcome everyone!

I think I read part of the OT discussion on this drama last week, which is why I've spent the past week trying to get through Episode 1!

I think the storyline is good, the heroine's character is interesting and Mike He is not bad-looking (I saw him in Calling Big Star and he definitely fits the rom-com hero mold), so I'm definitely going to keep trying.

However, apart from all kinds of RL distractions I spend most of the time trying to think of a good hairstyle for Mike! I mean absolutely no offense to his fans and he definitely has a nice face, but in the two dramas I've seen him in so far, the poor guy looks like he's wearing a bad wig :(

I just finished 9 End 2 Outs, and am still on a high. What a delightful drama! I found the plot, acting, and dialogue really spot-on. There were moments when I giggled like a little girl; how do Korean dramas make holding hands so erotic? If I knew the secret, I'd bottle and sell it!

Did a little search and found out that the actors were paired up before! Anyone ever watch April Kiss? It looks weepy, but I'm intrigued that the 9E2O leads were matched up before. It seems like kdramas don't like to match up the same actors over and over again (unlike Thai dramas, which thrive on recycling), so this made me squee a little. As long as they have a happy ending, I'm willing to commit to it. :)

Happy Friday!

You know I once dated an older guy and we didn't touch each other for 6 months. At one point I thought he was only interested in being friends and then one day I was passing a napkin to him and he took my hand and I almost passed out. We didn't kiss until 2 months later and it is one of my best first kisses. Carlos, where are you now?

Was he Korean? Because the same thing happened to me with my husband.

We were really good friends but even so he never touched me EVER. No hugs, no playful nudges, no nothing. I started to like him but I thought he just wanted to be my friend.

But then one day he kissed me and my heart almost exploded. Everyday since then he always wanted to hold my hand. He never lets go of my hand now.

Holding hands with him is seriously like the best thing ever. Maybe because the anticipation of any physical contact with him was so great for soooo long.

AWWWWW!! That is sooo romantic I love to see married couples holding hands especially older marrieds. I sometimes forget how much marriage costs women when I see that. My guy is from Honduras and I don't think it was shyness I think I have too much of a cool personality when it comes to romance, I also don't take hints very well either. That's not true, I get too many hints especially if I like the guy so I ignore all hints.

I only experienced it when I'm on my teens..

But with my hubby which I knew from first sight that he's gonna be THE ONE.. we already kissed on the second date.

Seconded a thousand times. :) My parents hold hands when crossing the street - they're in their sixties now, and people always swoon when they see it, hahaha. My dad used to piggyback my mom up the stairs when they were dating. Huh, I guess I kinda know why I like kdramas!

While I like physical contact in my dramas, I love it when it's doled out, which is something that seems to be lacking in a lot of the TV I consume, where people are so quick to jump into bed. One of the reasons I loved the X-Files so much was that Mulder and Scully had a fantastic, non-physical relationship that made every glance monumental. Sigh. I want that!

It is so long ago, but I still remember at one episode Mulder companied Scully to a doctor. And the doctor told her about her disease related with the chip planted at the back of her neck, she was shocked about the news. Mulder was there with her, he said nothing but just simply holding her hands to give her strength. Gawd I cried a bucket.

I agree that the ideal represented is glamorous and romantic to read about or watch... but damn, if that happened to me in real life I'd have walked away if he didn't at least try to take my hand by the third date. Will-he-or-won't-he keeps my interest only for so long, in dramas and in life. After a certain point it just becomes irritating. I'm not saying make out within 10 minutes of meeting me, that's not good either, but I'm just going to assume he's not interested if we've been going out for a while and there's not so much as a hug, and move on.

I know. I love the "love" dynamics. The way people don't give up on the guy even if he's telling you he moved on. I get it a little ( the promises that were made, the things you did that he has to take "responsibility" for) but at the same time my practical head and my pride rejects the clinging and finds it a bit hysterical ( not funny, hysterical).

That was one of the best scenes in the drama! I LOVE subtle romantic gestures, especially romance that's kindled slowly over time. Which is one of the best things about kdramas.

It's so hard for me to commit to American TV shows because all I ever seem to see is lust, not love. :/

Hello all, happy weekend. A few thoughts on "old news" things because I'm new to this and working my way through things people have probably seen many years ago...

Since I'm playing catch up on a lot of the basics/classics, I just finished Secret Garden and it was alright. I had some major problems with the plot and characterizations, which I won't rehash because I know they were discussed to death while it was airing.

Now moving backward in time to My Name is Kim Sam Soon, about halfway through now. I like it so far, although Hyun Bin's character was a bit lost on me when he smacks Hee-Jin when she confesses why she left. Not cool.

It is really refreshing, though, to see an American (Henry) being written somewhat more accurately/sympathetically, and who at least makes an attempt at actually acting in English, if not excellent at it. I understand the restrictions he presents as everything has to be translated in scenes with him, but at least it actually sounds like a real conversation-ish (Re: the "hollywood director" in Secret Garden... you could practically see him forgetting and stumbling over his English lines! Argh!)

you know, when I first saw MNIKSS I was like 'what the hell? Why did he hit her?" but I have noticed that slapping women is a recurring thing in some kdramas. Even if she deserved to be slapped, that would not fly in America, no matter what she did.

I don't know, what do you guys think?

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

Yeah... maybe there is a cultural disconnect there or something? It seems as though those ideals are changing, but it reminds me of American romance movies from the 50s... smackin' a lady one (deserving or not) didn't get in the way of the romantic story line. Heck, it's even held up as the right thing to do to snap a woman out of a hysterical womanly fit.

Now that I think of it, there are a lot of similarities in the way romance is portrayed. It's all very Taming of the Shrew... here's a few things I've thought of off the top of my head that run parallel with kdrama tropes to older American movies:

- Force kissing/holding/hugging from the man is romantic and shows he loves you, (think Humphrey Bogart...)
- Forward women are eviiiiil
- Older women are evilllll and/or sources of comedy and/or embarrassing, definitely ugly
- Women with their own monetary resources -- namely more than the man's -- are evillll or embarrassing
- Men feeling possessive of a woman is a positive thing, and may become violent when they are upset (but it's okay because he *loves you*)
- Women need constant physical protection, and get into trouble constantly without supervision (men, in response, beat up the offenders after coming to the rescue using their 6th sense for damsel in distress)

Of course these are all tropes and not every show or movie applies to all (or any) of them, but you have to admit that there are similarities in the hackneyed stereotypes.

Anyone see any other similarities to old shows and/or new shows? (Because these things exist in modern American cinema/television too!)

okay this may seem bizarre so caveat first: I don't think a person should hit another person when they are displeased with them. and now: I don't mind violence against women if you would hit a man for the same reason.

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

Maybe because I am from the South, or maybe because of personal reasons, but I don't think that a guy should ever hit a girl. Ever. Guys are stronger. No matter how much we work out, without the help of steroids we will never be as strong as them. Also, a man has a greater responsibility to not be violent towards women because of that strength. If a woman becomes violent towards the man, I believe he should pick her up and put her in another room until she can talk again. I don't mean a closet, but a place where she can get herself under control. I don't think that a woman should ever hit a man, either, though. She should be prepared to take a man's punishment if she steps into a man's shoes, but that man still has the responsibility of not hitting her.

0

I don't think it's a Southern/Northern/Western/Eastern thing... I'm not Southern and I feel the same way. There's no reason for a man to hit a woman (unless he is in danger and it truly is in self defense during a crime). There's no reason for a woman to hit a man either. Slapping and punching get thrown around way too much as an acceptable way to react or punish for a woman.

I don't think that a man should pick her up or isolate a woman if she's being very violent though. I think he should do exactly what a woman should do -- walk away from the situation. First of all he doesn't have the authority to tell her what to do or lock her up -- she's an adult, not a petulant child. If someone tried to do that to me it would only make me angrier. Secondly, that could be dangerous if a woman is being really violent. Women may not be as strong as men but that doesn't mean that they still can't do some serious damage. And thirdly, not every man is going to be strong enough to pull that off. Men are stronger on average, but not every man is always going to be stronger than every woman.

In the end, they're both adults, and the adult thing to do is simply to walk away, whether man or woman.

0

I completely forgot about those old American movies. They sure did slap women a lot, then hug it out.

As far as Korean movies, I remember watching The Classic and seeing that theater scene were two characters go back and forth with the slaps. I was like "huh? seriously?"

PS. Your eviiiill comments are so hilarious...and true sigh

That was his years of frustration, hurt, anger coming out in one violent act. Did not like it, but dramatically it worked:
Stunned.SLAP. Done.Hug.
They didn't spend half an episode showing us their back and forth about how bad he felt.

Would NOT fly here. Mabye he would pick up a chair, threaten her, and throw it near her in a North American script, and scream. Still violent, but not AT her.

Haha it's not much better, really.

Mostly nowadays in American television guys either kick non-people things, or get prolonged (admittedly boring) scenes of brooding in the dark.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, one thing I really like about Kdramas that is NEVER EVER EVER shown on American television, or even movies, is men crying. Or displaying any emotion at all, really.

I mean, come on! If the world worked according to the major networks, guys would implode from their emotional stuntedness. They get three moods: brooding, cool, and angry. Not one tear when something tragic happens? No?

I guess you never watched anything with Michael Landon in it - "Little House On The Prairie" featured "Pa" Ingalls sobbing away almost every episode, along with every movie he was ever in ... the King of Tears! :)

0

Haha, you got me Cynthia -- not a big fan of "house on the prarie" or Michael Landon. Still, I think the prevalent attitude is no tears for the dudes. I remember seeing a guy cry on American (non-reality) television recently during a scene, and it was actually jarring because I was so unused to it.

0

Girl, you have got to tune into Greys anatomy. McDreamy and McSteamy know how to shed some tears.

madzgo, I will definitely watch Jailbreakers and Ghost House now as I have just marathoned a week of CSW movies. I love his movie 'A day with my son'. Its really heartbreakingly good and CSW was brilliant. I also liked his newer movie 71 into the fire which to be honest Im not a war movie buff but this one was really well made and a true story too. Happy OT & Friday All! Hope you have marvelous weekends! The sun is finally shining in the Northeast-and we might not freeze, either. I'm very excited that we may have an actual spring this year :)

I was recovering from getting my wisdom teeth pulled the last two days. Ugh...I hope the swelling goes down soon. So, with no energy to do more, or smile, I started watching A Man called God. Its so worth riff tracks and drinking games. Although, I am enjoying it so far--but I think, like with Burn Notice and Bond, I find it a bit wearing.

I find it interesting that you tired of Burn Notice and Bond. I stopped watching Burn Notice last year because I didn't like how they kept stealing everyone's cars. It's unrealistic to think that you can always steal what you need and that there are no consequences to the act of stealing.

I think that some of the other commentors on the OT have mentioned in the past that one of the things they really like about asian dramas is that they are not always drawn out and repetitious. Meaning they stop at 16 episodes or so. This does not include the stereotypical aspects of the asian drama world.

I thought to look for it the other day since I love him, and there were subs (yay).

But, if you did watch it, did you find it a little odd that they used him to play the guy in her flashbacks too? I was half expecting that to be some kind of twist at the end where it somehow turned out that it had been him all along (although that would have been an AWFUL stretch).

Not sure about the script, or the acting, but the stills give us a messy Lee Min Ho.

http://en.korea.com/leeminho/?p=1402

From these photos, and others I have studied, I have deduced that LMH doesn't like to close his mouth.

Why not? What is the secret reason?

To all those who are fans/anti-fans of the Head Tilt, I call on your expert theories on the Open Mouth...

I have two guesses on the Open Mouth: 1) He has nasal congestion andbreathes better with his mouth or 2.) I personally experience this... I have a keen sense of smell and when I don't like the smells around me I breathe through my mouth.

He might be a mouth breather. Some people for whatever reason, breathe through their mouth. Although, for the photo's it looks to me like the photographer was trying to capture who Lee Min Ho is, you know, action shots just being himself.

Who knows, maybe he's thinking (Very important: Imagine use of Barry White's voice) "Jomo... I've read your posts on DB's OT... Ahhhhh!" and he opens mouth in unconscious preparation to kiss you!

Here: This will help prepare your imagination.

Thanks GF/JB for the 1N2D recaps.

I've downloaded both episodes.Man is it always so chaotic?

I killed myself laughing at KDH and KDH Jr kneeling to UTW's mother at whatever ungodly time it was (5+am right?)

How am I going to take him seriously as a villain when he goes walking around in a leopard print blanket!

It is always, always chaotic, it's kind of the 1N2D rule^^ it's fun and it's messy and we get to see everybody be dorks and not care about their image^^ It's a fun show, even if you watch it without subtitles like me and are guessing at more than half the things they say :)

Happy Friday Dramabeans world! I've been following this pretty much daily for over a year and decided to emerge from lurker status.

Several weeks I came across JB's post about Snow Flower and the Secret Fan being made, the premise got my fancy and I ran to the library and have since finished the book.

What a wonderful read! The characters are so beautifully layered and complex. I can't wait to see the film adaption, but can't help feel apprehensive as I always do when dealing with book-to-films. I'm not too familiar with Jeon Ji Hyun and Li Bingbing's work, any thought on how they will be able to pull of these complex characters?

I'm re-watching "on air" and missing park yong ha. Also, kim ha neul does this blinking thing that I find terribly annoying and making her character appear even more haughty and disdainful. Lee Bum Soo is so goood, even if a little short. :)

Very excited for all of the upcoming dramas!!!

Happy Friday. :D

I finally, finally FINALLY finished watching Coffee House (and I've been stuck in episode 4 for five months! lol).

Wasn't exactly irritated with the series as a whole, but I'm not calling it a great drama, either. Probably because I waited too long, or my obsession love for Eunjung made me irrational, but Episodes 13-18 weren't as good as the earlier eps.

The acting was outstanding, though, especially Park Shi Yeon.

Off to watch God Of Study next~ and also King Geunchogo; not a good idea to pick up a series in the middle but what the hell. Ham Eunjung in a sageuk outfit? Holy hot damn I'm in. if only Korea makes prehistoric dramas (with the caveman outfit and all XD)

I saw the final half of episode 2 first and it so thrilled and pleased me that I had to see it from the beginning. And what a treat jung ae ri in battle dress a la xena and a brain to back it up. I love the story and I love the warrior women. Do it right!

I've been coming to this site for a long while now but it didn't occur to me to click on the OT threads. But what a pleasant surprise my bored friday brought me last week. Lots of witty and interesting post as well as drama recommendations that I so needed. Thank you dears!

Am following 49 days which is getting better with each episode. Can't wait for Wed & Thur!
Some other awesomeness I'm watching/rewatching includes 9 Ends 2 Outs, Running Man, Family outing and Surgeon Bong Dal Hee (can't get enough of LYW in 49days!).
Ohh and can I mention The Big Bang Theory too? I rarely watch American TV but this is a gem and Jim Parsons is so freaking brilliant as Sheldon Cooper! I'm so in love with this man!

Also I'm stuck with Flames of Ambition... I do want to see more of evil Na Yong and bratty Ingi, but I don't know why I just can't seem to hit the play button. Anyone finished this? Is the ending any good? I'm at episode 30+ now.

Also I don't know whats wrong with Crime Squad... Is it the directing or the writing? I've been rolling my eyes at the crappy ways they "discover" clues. I'm just watching for Ji Hyo and the main lead's interaction.

OMG 1st post here and so much rambling. Forgive me but I have to add is this true or is it just a late April Fool's joke?!?!?:

I know what you mean about flames of desire. I watch about 10 minutes of each episode. I was thinking this morning it's like chalk going across the blackboard the sound is annoying but you want to know why it's making that sound. It's dramas like that one that should have episode recaps so I can know what's happening without watching it.

Thanks for the warm welcome! True, but not to that extend in my comparison, because I loathe that sound you described with a passion. Along with when a fork scratches a mirror (saw that in a show and never manage to get that out of my head ever!)
But yes, FOD gets tiring and I just want to know whats gonna happen to Minjae, Ingi and Na Young, without all the lengthy business talk.

Happy Friday, All! I am now the proud have-er of a new job :D I've also moved to the lets-find-us-an-agent stage of my book.

In drama news, I'm still loving Twinkle Twinkle, even if the subs on dramacrazy are painfully far behind *sniffsniff* I'm also a little daunted by the 50 episodes. I'm so used to 25 eps or less... I'm sure it'll be worth it. In an effort to join all the 49 Day-ers, in spirit if nothing else, I've started watching The Return of Iljimea. I tried watching Once Upon A Time in Saengchori, but it doesn't seem to be on dramacrazy and mysoju gives me blank-page :( Maybe dramafever?

Anywho, as you guys can tell I'm in a pretty good mood. I feel like this entire post is pure fluff, for which I apologize.

Yay! Thank you so much for the link and the congrats!

I'd live to see Jung Won and Dae Bum together. I'd also love to see Geum Ran not become the evil villianess she has to be. Not that her life's been easy at all, but she's made it so much harder for herself by pinning all her hopes on one plan and one guy. Then that falls through and she pins it on her biological family while neglecting her real family. I'm only up to ep11 (although 12 & 13 are up!) and I can already see how this baby-mixup thing could work for both daughters with a minimum of fuss. Geum Ran is greedy. And you're so right about Seung Joon! He always presumes the worst about Jung Won. Maybe their relationship is supposed to get him to be less reporter-like? IDK.

okay, so i watched 12 and 13 and i'm finally warming up to seung joon. it was actually kind of adorable watching him try to comfort jung won on a walk(of course she thought he was just being a weirdo and gave him the stink eye for dragging her all across town). i'm putting my hope in the writer that geum ran doesn't turn into a total baddie that does evil things just because she supposedly can't turn back now.

on the other hand, switched at birth dramas always have to have the poor family vs. the rich one. i suppose it'll be too boring if both families were either rich or poor. at least that'll offer some different storylines methinks.

Hey :)

I wanted to ask if you guys are interested in participating in an international forum (my social venture) I'm creating for high school students.

My social venture, an international website, will have two primary features of an international chatting forum and a culture news/international news portal site. With the international chatting forum, students will be paired with their peers from different countries based on language interest and level. For all students, each week, a youth issue, such as stress from school, or a current controversial international event will be set as the topic of the chatting sessions. Not only will it give a global perspective of the pandemic problems of teen youth, but it will also give a peer to peer mediation.

Intermediate to advanced students can participate through a music industry/entertainment agency by mastering fluency through an activity they enjoy, primarily singing. By learning to correct their oral skills through singing a foreign song, the students will ultimately create a music video of their recorded performance through video chat. Students will practice singing cover songs of different languages as a duet or a small group. After recording it as a final session, a video editor will edit the conference call into a professional music video, which will be published on Youtube.

I also want to create a feature of international current events written by high school students, who will be able to discuss with others who are interested. In addition, not only will the article sections feature international news, but also entertainment news articles, such as the music and movie industry. Through articles that discuss aspects of cultures that interest teens, primarily pop culture like music, TV, and movies.

I wanted to ask if your school will be interested in setting up a partnership. Even if you aren't interested, please let me know.
Thanks,
Yeji

*Koizora: Setsunai Koi Monogatari*
(Live version movie)

Koizora (Sky Of Love: A sad Love Story), is one of my most beloved J-Love story's. Written in 2005 by Mika, who posted the serialize story on a cell-phone website (Mahō no iLand).

The story its said to be a biographical account base on Mika's life or close related to first hand accounts.

Mika- Heroine
Hiro- Hero

Mika - If I had not meet you that day, then I would have not experience the pain, and sadness, and memories feel with tears. But if I had not meet you, I would also have not experience the joy, excitement, preciousness, happiness, yes the feeling of absolute happiness.
How ere you now? I continue to love the vast blue sky!!!!

Mika was a freshman in highs cool when the story begins.

After looking at herself in the mirror, Mika applies lip gloss, she lives the rest room, and heads down to the high school cafeteria, she sits with two of her friend and one of them ask her, “why are you wearing lip gloss? Is there some one who you like? And Mika replays “no,” she does not want o fall in love, nor does she knows how to go about “falling in love”. Her other friend replays that there is someone she likes!
The girls get excited and ask who she likes, she replays, “Class D's Nozumo,” the other girl disapproves of her liking Nozumo, since he wear earnings and is consider some kind of
“Yankee” (delinquent).
After eating lunch the three girls go to the D classroom, to see if the can take a look at the boy in question, they see two boys coming down the aisle, one wearing white spiky hair an the other one black, Mika ask her friend, which one she likes and she answers the boy in black hair, the girls stop as the boys get closer, and the boy with black hair approaches Mika, and ask her to exchange phone numbers, Mika is startled as her friend cuts in line and ask the boy if she can exchange numbers with him instead, Mika try's to evade the situation, and as she lives she bumps into the white hair guy, and as they look at each other you know that “fate” has intervened, she apologizes and walk away, as the white hair boy gazes at her as she walks away knowing that his heart and soul has been smitten by the site of this young girl.

Later in the day Mika looses her cell-phone and ask her friend to keep calling her number, to see if she can hear it, Mika finds her cell-phone ringing in the library, she answers the phone and thanks her friend only to find that there is a male voice at the other end of the phone line, she try's to find who it is but he refuses to identified himself, an the beguiling of a cell-phone relationship starts.

After a few weeks Mika's birthday comes around, but the celebration was not a happy one, since her parents were arguing about financial matters, latter that night as she share with her cell-y friend he tells her that he want to celebrate her birthday, meaning that she will find out who this really is.

She completely panics when she finds out that the white hair boy is her cell-y friend and she lives, she finds out that his name is Hiro, but by the end of the day she calms down and goes and looks for him, and the relationship takes on the boy friend/girlfriend dynamic, one of her friends warns her to be careful because she knows that Hiro has a girlfriend at another school.

Hiro's ex is not happy and send some bad guys to attack, and rape Mika, Hiro finds Mika after the attack and takes her to his house, and he goes after the girlfriend and beats up the people responsible for the attack.

After the kids in school find out what happen to Mika, the start to write bad stuff about her in the blackboards, Hiro goes crazy and threatens all the kids with violence if he finds out who wrote on the blackboard's.

Miko and Hiro end up in the library, and among the silent bookcases they once more consummate their love for one another.

A few weeks latter, Mika start to have morning sickness and she finds out that she is pregnant, his parents agree for them to get married but her parent do not approve. Hiro quits school and gets a job in order for him become a responsible adult, her ex-girlfriend and her thugs man handle Mika one more time and eventually she suffers a miscarriage, Mika is devastated and Hiro completely isolates himself from the world including Mika, afew weeks latter he have a party at his house and invites Mika to come along, after a night of drinking all the kids are past out on the floor, Mika goes to the bathroom and whaen she comes out Hiro is making out with another girl.

Hiro comes back to school but eventually, he brakes all ties with Mika, a few months go by and Mika finally decides to date another boy, things seem to be going very well until Mika by accident finds out that Hiro is in the hospital, with terminal cancer due to a brain tumor, Miko decides to brake the relationship with her new boyfriend to be with Hiro, Hiro and Mika rekindle their relationship and after a period were Hiro was looking good, things turn for the worst, Mika is at a store making prints of the last phiotos Hiro shoot in his camera, while walking back to the hospital Hiro's vitals start to fail, Mika calls only to find out that Hiro is dying, and Hiro and Mika last goodbye is said again through the cell-phone.

Mika contemplates suicide, but eventually she overcomes her pain and grief and decides to live on.

The movie end with Mika coming back to visit her parents. And she comes to celebrate the 7 year since Hiro passed away.

I have seen the movie and the drama, and I like both, the drama is only 6 episodes long, I highly recommend this drama!!!!!

@brookeeve, I am glad that you like this drama!
Interestingly enough, the dramas where I get more invested emotionally are the ones where there is "tragedy."

Can you imagine what "Mary Stay Out All Night," would have been, if Mary would end up with Jung In, and Mu-gyul would had committed suicide? Oh Man all would have broken loose.

Or if Joo-won would have died after he switched bodies the last time, I bet people will be more invested emotionally if that scenario would have happen.

I think the greatest difference between K-Dramas, J-Dramas, and Mainland-dramas is that: J-D and M-D, the way the play with tragic heroes, they are not afraid to allowed the hero to die, and if not die the hero not always wins, in K-Drama land the hero must always win and stay alive.

One of the main reasons why I really like "Chuno and Bad Guy," is the fact that the hero was "Sacrifice" at the end, I was in tears when both heroes died, and their dead made this two dramas IMHO worth it.

One of my favorite "Romantic Tragedies." is the story of Martin Guerre as written by the trial judge Jean de Coras in his book "Arrest Memorable," published in 1565, Gérard Depardieu 1982 film "Le Retour de Martin Guerre," and Jodi Foster 1993 movie "Sommersby," are base on this tragic story.

"A Moment To Remember," is one of my all time favorite movies by Son Ye-jin, this movie is base on the on the 2001 J-Drama "Pure Soul," man this movie really made me cry like a little kid, I think Son Ye-jin was beyond great in this movie!!!! : O}

I love love 49 days because of my scheduler love I'm probably going to end up watching the Return of Iljimae which I had avoided on principal since I had actually enjoyed Iljimae with Junki...

Can you hear my heart? is so cute, I think I've said it before but i'm actually going to be sorry once they grow up because they are just so adorable! Little Dongjoo is too cute, and nice and I really want to pinch his adorable cheeks! I really love the kids, well most of them except for the one that's really rude and mean to his father because he's "ashamed" little Misook is just too adorable!

I've also just watched the movie Finding Mr. Destiny/ Finding Kim Jong Wook, and I'm remembering justs why I loved Gong Yoo so much for a long time, he's too cute one moment and then he's just so hot.... and oh the kisses...

Taking a break from worries for a minute and I had these thoughts (deep breath, cracking nuckles) :

Of all the Stalker #2s the guy from A man called god (character name herein after referred to as the CN:) CN: Hwang Woo Hyun seems the most creeper so far. Ahjussi (CN: Byun Hak Do) from Delightful Girl Choonhyang is a close 2nd (my personal feeling for Uhm Tae Woong aside.) Shin woo from You're Beautiful is kind of the other end of the creep spectrum--he's weak but not freaky. My heart, since my blood is red, belongs to Guh-ro of all the #2s, as he does not creep, he protects, loves and allows her to be as she will--all while being uber chill.

I'm sure there are more #2 creeps that will give me heebies in the future (CN: Min Hyun-woo from Samsooni for instance is icky icky, for instance) . . . or make me smack my forehead for the poor git of a girl caught all blind in a love square, but seriously, some of these men are totally flesh crawling!!! Who are the creepers I've discounted or haven't met yet that are worth watching out for? Are there any #1s that set off all the alarm bells?

It seems the uber mean people are the CEOs/royals usually and the sunbae/ seonsaeng characters tend to be lesser dangers...but is that a trope? because in the states professors are presented with loose morality fairly often. Is this maybe why Jung Woo went with Lego-head in the end? He needed her rigid control...ahhhh! way over-analyzed! shoving away the image...ack....okay ...

hmmm...who are the chicas, other than Ha Ni in Playful Kiss that exemplify the stalker/ creeper? Baek Seung Jo was lucky she was cute and endearing, otherwise that romance had Misery written all over it....It would have been funny (romantic let down, but funny) if instead of the swoonful kiss under the umbrella he was like, "oh that's cool, okay--see you at home then" (Poor girl would have been utterly confused/ heartbroken ... again) Yet, robot boy was a little creeper himself, so it worked out, eh? He also had lots of time to grow accustomed to her face. (BTW I still hate Henry Higgins. I'm sorry Eliza Doolittle wasn't able to do more with her je ne sais quoi after he trained her up --but I think her brain clapped its hands and said Project! at some point)

Okay thanks for listening/ your input! Annyeonghi gaseyo!
