Stills from SBS’s Scent of a Woman

Here’s our first look at SBS’s upcoming weekend series Scent of a Woman with these stills, both promotional and behind-the-scenes, starring Kim Sun-ah as an ordinary office worker who’s told she’s dying, and Lee Dong-wook as the heir to a travel company who falls for her. Lest that description scare you off right away, rest assured that this is a romantic comedy. (Although “comedy” to me means she doesn’t die in the end. Got that, drama??)

Lee Dong-wook is fresh out of the army, and not a moment too soon, since Scent of a Woman premieres just a month after his June 20 release. In fact, the drama got a bit of a reprieve because SBS has extended its preceding series, New Gisaeng Story, by two episodes, giving it one additional week. (It had originally been slated for July 16, but now takes to airwaves the following Saturday.) I say with a schedule that tight, any extra time is appreciated.

The drama actually began rehearsals before Lee’s army discharge; the script reading shots below were taken on June 7, while the farm scenes at the bottom of the page were filmed on the 11th in Ilsan, Goyang.

Lee headed straight to the studio in Kangnam after being discharged, where the cast and crew had a congratulatory cake prepared for him. Along with Lee and Kim, posing with the cake in the photo below are the two other leads, Eom Ki-joon (playing Kim’s cold doctor, who warms up because of her) and Seo Hyo-rim (as Lee’s chaebol fiancée, though the two aren’t in love, as this is an arranged marriage).

I do believe this leading pair has never looked better, and they look particularly good together. But it also helps that they’re two actors who are particularly good at generating chemistry with co-stars. And while chemistry alone can’t carry a show, it sure can elevate one to a higher level.

Scent of a Woman, produced by the writer-director pair behind the gorgeously filmed Dr. Champ, is a weekend drama — and while most weekend offerings tend to be longer shows, this one is a miniseries (yay!), clocking in at 16 episodes. It premieres July 23.

I thought so too...a good different...younger, fresher. I love KSA but wasn't feeling the pairing before cuz I thought KSA would look older than LDW but she looks great & they look great together. Looking forward to this one!

Looks like she just had a face lift. Her skin id a bit tight and tone at the same time. The nostril show a bit now at a certain camera angle.

Or maybe she lost weight? Cause you know, it's a possibility considering she didn't have that much weight to begin with. I know the Korean entertainment industry is filled with heaps of people who turn to surgery for almost everything, but some people don't always go that route. Plus, there are makeups/lotions/creams that help "revive" the skin and whatever to make it look youthful. I'm not saying she didn't do any surgery, but there is a big possibility that she finally lost the weight she had gained over the years and that is the reason behind the change in her look. Skin is elastic to the point that if you didn't surpass it's limits, once you lose weight it'll tighten up again (or something like that considering I suck at explaining things).

Yes she probably lost weight but nowadays there are many non surgical treatments that can be done such as thermage (radio frequency face tightening) and laser lifting. These do not involve cutting up the face and hence are subtle, not obvious to people who are unaware of such treatments.

It seems like she has done some of these treatments. Some enhancements is fine but hope she doesnt go to the extent of distorting her features.

Required fields are marked *

But that's the point of what I said. Any one of those things are far from having a surgery. Why do people always assume that surgery has been done? Heh, nevermind. At this point, I think it shouldn't matter as long as she still continues to be as energetic and fun on screen as before.

0

agree with you..anyway, surgical procedure to look good is very common for those in the entertainment industry as the competition is so stiff....i think there are so few actors/actresses who have natural beauty, almost all are surgically enhanced...peace

Why judge her like that, simply she looks good, we don't need a magnifying glass to examine her as if we were doing an autopsy and we are looking for clues. Whether she had surgery or she lost weight or use make up only one truth remains she looks good and she is a human being we don't need to be so negative, you even looked at her nostril I just saw the picture and notice how nice she looks. Whatever she did if you have the money wouldn't you improve yourself a little too. Don't be cruel with someone just because she is on the public eye. She is a star but she has feelings too. I can't stand so much negativity, give her a brake Please...

i think you are very right..first of all i heard she had to gain some weight for some dramas because they required it like lovely sam soon maybe it was hard for her to lose it over the years...it could be that they asked her to lose it for this one..either way she has always been my favorite actress <3 i totally agree with you people should not be so negative with her.

<33 her.

Samsoon was waaaay back in 2005. In fact she's already much slimmer in City Hall and she lost an extra 10kg for her film this year 'Fighter' and has been trying to keep this weight for the drama as the whole crew thinks it fits the character.

While I do agree the first 2 stills PS-ed a bit too much I just don't understand why ppl in Korea would immediately relate this to plastic surgery... totally not encouraging to the actress who grows fat and turns slim solely for her dramas / films at the expense of her health.

Anyhow, I am totally excited to see these stills earlier on as i think Sun Ah and LDW look absolutely fab together~

I think that the hair makes a difference. I haven't seen her with long hair in a long time. Even in Kim Sam Soon she had her hair up in a ponytail.

I'm super excited for this. I love this couple. I'm just crossing my fingers that she doesn't die. I'll even take a last minute twist that defies logic just to see them happy. Puh-leaseee. =)

Very well said!
People who are not KSA follower, would naturally have that kind of reaction or opinion. (She had surgery, can`t recognize her). But if you are KSA fanatic, you would know that she look the same and she just lost weight.
I believe, the first 2 photo was photo shop, common thing to celebrity photos. But, look at her photos without photo shop, she just looked much better, in fact during the script reading session, she has no make-up, cause i read that she`s been in the gym.
Suna would do anything, even sacrifice her beauty for a role. Sometimes, i don`t like that idea, changing her appearance, but in the drama, I always look forward to her transformation. So, i got the idea that it`s really necessary.
I love this actress, she is good at what she does.
Can`t wait any longer to see her!

0

i agree with everybody here about the "weird" pictures of kim sun-ah being due to some bad photoshopping.

other than that, as everybody has mentioned, she lost a lot of weight. she has steadily been shedding the weight she had gained back when she filmed kim sam soon. i think she had a hard time getting rid of it, and i remember back when she was filming that drama with lee dong-gun where she plays a museum worker (night after night?? or something like that, can't remember title) she got a lot of flak online, people commenting on message boards how she needs to lose weight, she is fatter than lee dong-gun, etc etc. poor kim sun-ah!

anyways, she lost more weight in city hall, and now even more!

also she recently had braces on her teeth, so maybe the shape of her mouth area may be different from before!

0

I know, she looks so stunning in those shots. I'm excited for this drama. We need a good one cause we are going through a drought. All the dramas airing right now are less than par (in story line) with exception to City Hunter and Greatest Love.

KSH had braces while she was promoting City Hall in Taiwan, and that was late 2009. I also feel that the first two images are Photoshopped, comparing to the live BTS shots.

Well to be honest, its not that I hate Kim Sun Ah, its just I hate the characters she plays. Like tough, rough and usually, she ends up looking... well you no a bit 'unpolished' lets say.

Also another thing which is slightly stupid, but its how my brain works, is shes been with Hyun Bin and Cha Seung Won. Why that has any relevance is because I absolutlely adore their respective pairings in their most recent dramas, so when Kim Sun Ah comes in... its like GAH! Ruining the perfectness of the current coupling, and it takes ages for me to get over each couple I thought was good. Stupid I know, but its what stopped me watching City Hunter, Personal Taste (I'm still not over the Boys over Flowers Lee Min Ho pairing >.<) and City Hall. Sorry, bit long -_-''

Not really saying that there's anything wrong with the actors being old, its just when the characters are, its usually a big issue in the drama. Also I want some 'normal' love too sometimes. (sorry if you weren't talking to me btw)

normal love ain't conflicting enough... however if u want some normal love watch family dramas - where the love between the leads is quite peaceful and normal ... the only conflict source are the parents

But New Tales of Gisaeng, Best Love and Romance Town do normal quite well. Well I think its good anyway :P Age difference has been rubbing me the wrong way ever since Oh! My Lady -_-''

Required fields are marked *

"Normal love" is an imaginary concept where 2 people must be of two different genders but of the same social, cultural, generational, weight and racial groups.
Nothing out of the ordinary is allowed. Yawn!

Not my cup of tea - I prefer different and extraordinary love; it makes better storylines.

0

I'm not knocking on your preference OP.

I have a friend who wont watch anything with a Noona-DS relationship lol. It's not like she shuns them in real life or anything; it just ruins the drama experience for her...so I guess I see where you're coming from? :D

It's a trend, N-D relationships in dramas these days. It reflects on changing social relationships and it's more "exciting" as some posters have said.

That said, I can agree with you wanting a bit of tradition with your romance... it helps along creating that "drama reality" that we all want to immerse ourselves in.
And, dont jump on me saying that *wags fingers at other posters*. In K-society, it IS shocking for the woman to be older...hence, tradition lol. :P

0

Required fields are marked *

What would be the same age bracket? Where do you think we should be drawing the line? 1 year? 4 years? 10 years but only if the female is younger? So is it the noona relationship in real life or in the story? What if there is an age difference in real life but the actors play same-age characters in the story (like Lee Yo Won and Jung Il Woo in the flashback scenes of Yi Kyung and Yi Soo in 49 days.) How about a pairing of a same-age actor and actress who play characters with an age difference?

Age difference of actors of some great drama couples:
Cha Seung Won is 10 years older than Gong Hyo Jin (Best Love). Suzy's 6 years younger than Kim Soo Hyun (Dream High). Ha Ji Won's 4 years older than Hyun Bin (Secret Garden). Kang Ji Hwan's 7 years older than Yoon Eun Hye. Gong Yoo is like 5 years older than YEH (Coffee Prince). Kim Nam Joo is definitely much older than her 2 leading men in her two Queen dramas. Choi Jin Shil was 2 years older than Jung Joon Ho (Last Scandal). And then there's the BOF couple.

In Romance Town, the two main guys who went to high school together and are BFFs are played by actors 8 years apart.

Kim Sun Ah's 6 years older than Lee Dong Wook. I think Kim Sun Ah only feels old because she has been playing old-maid type of characters. And styling matters. Does anyone remember My Princess's Yoon-ju (Park Ye Jin)? PYJ is younger than Song seung hun by like 5 years but she looked 10 years older due to her horrible hair and clothes and people kept on saying "ew! she looks sooo old!".

0

Required fields are marked *

Personally, I don't mind the age difference. As long as the chemistry sparks, I wouldn't care less about cougar issues.

With the famous Kim Sam soon, Kim Sun Ah is around 6 years older than Huyn Bin and they were hella hot together.

In Personal Taste, I'm pretty sure Lee Min Ho is younger than his co-star at least 5 years but they play around the same age. But honestly speaking, I didn't feel a thing btw them.

Kim Sun Ah never looks like "herself," in my opinion - she looks different in every thing she is in, and she has changed her body drastically in the past years - thinner every year since Sam Soon, it seems. She's just a chameleon, though, in a good way - like Gary Oldman.

According to the soompi forum (the amazing alodia, as usual!) Kim Sun Ah bought the cake (pictured above) for LDW.

I can't wait to see this drama and hope it's subbed.

Another actor that I have not seen before. But he looks cute. Is he a good actor? (Why that hair? Why? ok, he looks good with it).
It looks like June/July will be busy too. Its okay for now, Im on vacations and this one sounds good. The only thing that worries me is that if the premise is that she is dying, how is she going to survive? I guess it will have to be related with what kind of disease she has.

omo, thanks so much for saying this early that she's not dying in the end--- i was already thinking of not watching it because of the 'dying' plot.

now, i'm excited, yey! i miss LDW and i like KSA!

Hate to blow your bubble. I don't think JB is saying she's not going to die. She and the others (that includes me) doesn't want her to die.

But the pessimist in me is seeing the scary comes back of the old KDramas of glooms and dooms (translate that into the death of the leads) the differences are now they capture our love first with many cute moments and hillarious scenes before delivering the death blow.

However, I'm actually an optimist so I'm going to assume that no matter how much they want to make the drama memorable, they know that the happy ending is always the best course to take.

So, yeah, she'll live.

Is LDW wearing a wig? cos he can't have that long of a 'do if he's coming from the military... right?

Maybe it's the dress but her chest looks really flat in those two pics with the white dress.

I love KSA. She is so beautiful and hilarious. I've been waiting for her to do another show. Never seen Lee in anything so I will be Google-ing him.

Kim Sun-ah, imo, looks really attractive in these stills. Maybe it's because I get a comfy and ruffly vibe but at the same time she looks charming and beautiful. However, the two leads look very awkward in the promotional stills.
And Eom Ki-joon... why so cute!? I know I'm going to fall for his character. I hope he gets a lot of screen time!

Lee!!! I hvn't seen him for ages, its really good to see him again...he is totally cute.
Looking fwd for this drama for sure. Don't mind with the age gap, she looks wayyy younger than her real age.... I'm glad that they put KSA as female lead than other young blood such as one of girl groups...hehehe...

I could recognize KSA.
she looks like herself although she looks much thinner and they airbrushed/PSed her photo too much. In the last batch of phtos you can tell she lost weight compared when we saw her in city hall.

Love KSA!! Have been wanting to watch Cityhall again but no time. Will definitely watch this one. My rib tickles just by watching her dorky specky curly hair look. Can't wait for the moment she transforms into a swan!
