Sector 7 opens in U.S cinemas

Sector 7, Korea’s monster-at-sea action flick starring Ha Ji-won, was one of the big summer blockbusters in Korea (netting more than 2.2 million admittances; it’s still in theaters, so that number will probably tick upward), and now American and Canadian (well, BC and Toronto folks) audiences will have the chance to see it on the big screen as well.

CJ Entertainment is releasing Sector 7 in 15 cinemas across the U.S. and Canada; the movie opened this past weekend for most of the theaters, with Hawaii’s release to come in October.

Check out the two teasers below (they’re English-subtitled) to refresh your memories on the plot, which in a nutshell is basically The Host on a deep-sea oil rig, and with Ha Ji-won, as well as a bunch of guys who probably die. (I haven’t seen it, but that’s pretty much the formula, isn’t it?)

Below are the theater locations.

I loved it!! Yea, there were some problems here and there, but I was just looking for a movie with some action packed scenes and Ha Ji Won acting which I pretty much got. If you go into the whole concept and background into the movie, then it may be suckish but for something just to sit back and enjoy it was pretty good. And at the end I cried as well so in the end the movie did move me in a way.

I think it's simply about taste. Serious movie goer like Jen should just visit Cannes for having those so-called art movies. On the other hand, boring people like me would just enjoy simple story about silly sea monsters that never exist. That's good enough to make my day!

Cannes don't just have so-called art movies. And you don't have to be a serious movie goer wh likes so-called art movies to not like a movie if it has a weak plot and wastes its actors.

Don't condescend, people are allowed not to like a movie without you assuming they have highfalutin tastes. I love brainless and predictable movies that will never win awards, like Indiana Jones, Thor, and Avatar, but that doesn't mean I don't also think Transformers II was a big, steaming pile of mess.

By the way, Cannes has had it's share of publicly popular movies, and not the "so-called art movies" you say. No Country for Old Men, O Brother Where Art Thou and Inglorious Basterds were all contestants. Those aren't exactly unknown "artsy" films. Have you even bothered to watch the movies shown at Cannes? The poor director of the acclaimed Korean movie "Poetry" has been trying for years to win the Best Film award at Cannes and finally has, and now you're putting them down.

Yeah, those guys are pretty much all doomed, I'd say. Usually there's a maximum of two survivors. If they're lucky. :-)

Alien is in there a lot, wow...

Not my kind of movie, but it looks well-made, for what it is.

the special effects look kinda.... eh

I'll probably still go see it. It's kinda of a hike to get to Niles, but I like it when movies have a U.S. opening in Chicago, since they don't often. I like to support them!

I had a lot of fun seeing Finding Mr. Destiny in the theater! I thought this was going to be a one-day showing like that was, and I work now on Friday nights so I thought I wouldn't be able to see this. I'm happy it's showing for a little while longer.

Omg Chicago FTW! They really don't do it often, things like this excite me XD I love it. I wish the theatre wasn't in Niles, though. For me, that's a ways away when I'm not even sure I'll like the movie.

Niles isn't Chicago, though, which makes me sad. I wish it'd play in a venue like Music Box or Landmark Theatre :/ Oh well, AMC Niles it is!

Oh Ji-ho looks ridiculously good looking. Too bad that the producers also gave away major spoilers about his character *shakes fist in PD's face*..... But man, the special effects kind of look, so-so-ish. HAHAHA.

Is it eng subbed? I'd give it a try if it was...since i'm pretty into the scifi genre. But the last time i watched a Korean film it was the one with Hyun Bin and not all of it was in English eventhough they advertised that the whole thing was done in English. I was completely lost on the Korean and Chinese dialogues =(

Hi jnt1024,

According to the press kit for Sector 7's U.S. release, it is being shown in the Korean language but with English subtitles. =)

Thanks for informing us, JB! =)

I agree with some of my fellow commenters- yeah, Sector 7 has a pretty high probability of being campy, silly, over-the-top, and completely predictable(guys-0, Ha Ji-won-1)...as are most movies of this genre.

But...having become a big fan of Ha Ji-won(Damo, Bali, and Secret Garden), I think it'd be cool to be able to watch her(and Sector 7 in all its campy glory) on the big screen with the big screen sound system...and in 3D, no less.

Sounds like a fun way to spend a couple of hours...I'm in!

Really?? It got bad reviews? Then why was it a big summer hit?? With those kind of movies, it might get bad reviews from movie critics, but as for viewers, they love it. So I wouldn't be basing the quality of the movie solely on what movie critics be saying. You never know, you might actually like a movie that critics say sucks.

I don't really like these kind of movies, but if an overseas movie premieres in the US I'd go. Just because...*shrugs*

Yea, I'm not one for horror and thriller but I loved this movie! Just watched a couple of days ago. Sure if you want a movie that clarifies everything, well, this movie is going to hit rock bottom. But if u want a movie with Ha Ji Won acting, actions scenes here and there, not the best 3D, but still entertaining, then you'll love it! I absolutely loved it so while you're watching the movie, don't think about "why this" or "why that" just enjoy the scenes, cool Ha Ji Won and relax, then I'm pretty sure you might like the movie. Well that's my opinion, because i dont always go for what critics say...

Look at IMDB http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1934381/.

24 ratings + 2 critics = 3.2 :(

Rotten Tomatoes a bit better 50%

But still.. I expected more since there were so much hype around it.

No wonder, I've just read the review at imdb.com from your link, and found out that the guy who wrote such review, named Jahoo Ko, also hated Transformer (one of the best selling American movie, IMO). His words ; "'Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen' is something I consider to be one of the worst films I've ever seen". See? It's simply about taste.

it got bad reviews from critics and viewers it was not a big hit yes ppl went to see it only in the first couple of weeks just for the casts sake then the movie dropped out of the top ten and it went from being shown in more than 3000 cinemas or so to being shown in less than ten

it was terrible. waste of time. waste of talent for this movie.

This could easily have been a love story.....

One girl, torn between a hot guy on a hot bike and a lonely alien in an abandoned oil rig.

What do you do when you fall for the alien you're supposed to destroy?

Cut to Alien wailing: "Everybody wants to kill me!"

Cut to the last part of second trailer:

Alien leans in very, very close to girl's face amidst sounds of heavy breathing, drools, and kisses her.

Ahhhhhh.

Hmmm, deja vu! It seems I've seen those type of scenes in many Hollywood movies. I think I'm just a jaded movie goer.

In other unrelated matters--why is there no news about Bae Doo na's Hollywood movie (in the making) Cloud Atlas? I thought DB would have picked up that news.

Saw the movie in NYC on Friday. It was good, but the "monster" was so disappointing. Ha Ji-won was so great. She really is the Korean Angelina Jolie!! Oh Ji Ho was so cute(as usual, and the only real reason I went to see the movie!)

Seems like a mix of Aliens 3 and the Deep Blue Sea.

I know HJW is the big star (esp. among younger folk), but still surprising to see her get 1st billing over screen legend ASK.

A note to JB, you said the Ridgefield Parj theater is in New York, but it's in New Jersey. Just something you might want to edit.
_____

I'm comflicted. I want to go watch because it's an overseas movie showing in a nearby theaters, I can easily hop on a train to 42nd st. I'm also still in love with Ha Ji Won and I want to introduce my folks to the wonderful world that is K-ent (though I figured I would watch Old Boy or Ahjussi with them for that). However, I heard the reviews were bad, from both critics and viewers. I don't want to waste my time convincing my folks to go to busy 42nd st to watch a crappy movie that's not even in English. I'll consider it.

Does anyone know how long Sector 7 will be showing (esp. for the theaters in NY) ?

OMG. I saw this movie yesterday and it was the best action horror mixed thing I've seen ever. The acting was awesome, and to all who are weary to see it because of bad reviews in k- land, I went to see it at 42nd st where the prices are HIGH. But it was worth my money def. Even my sis who thinks I'm weird 4 loving kdrAmas watches this and loved it. It was super well done. I RECCOMEND TO ALL! Ha hi won rocks!

Well, I got to watch Sector 7 last evening in San Francisco, at the AMC Metreon.

Bad reviews notwithstanding, I enjoyed Sector 7! My main motivation for seeing this movie was to be able to watch Ha Ji-won on the big screen. She did NOT disappoint. In every scene that she was in(and she was in almost every scene), I simply could not take my eyes off of her. It wasn't just her natural beauty that kept pulling my eyeballs to her(and she was mesmerizing, even when splattered with oil, blood, etc.). She just has this amazing screen presence...as does her venerable co-star Ahn Sung-ki. These two just have that magic 'X' factor. If you're a Ha Ji-won fan and have not yet seen her on the big screen, I would urge you to do so.

Sure, Sector 7 has its flaws, large and small. Mediocre screenplay, weak character development, over-the-top cowardly acting(one actor, specifically), weird looking monster, etc., etc.... But, I've seen plenty of sci-fi/monster flicks, and Sector 7 is at least par with most of them.
I also had no problem with the quality of acting with most of the actors, and none at all with the stars. As I wrote before, Ha Ji-won did not disappoint. Other commenters mentioned waste of talented actors, and I would agree in principle.

Bottom line for me- I had a fun time watching Sector 7, and I'm glad that I took the trip into San Francisco and spent $17 to see Ha Ji-won kick monster ass on the big screen in 3D!

I'm also glad to have been able to support a Korean film that got released to the U.S. Unfortunately, due to virtually no promotional campaigning(outside of fine drama blogs like DB) that I could find, I have doubts about how commercially successful Sector 7's U.S. release may prove to be.

Despite the bad reviews, I thoroughly enjoyed Sector 7 and watching Ha Ji Won kick ass. It lacks originality and Ha Ji Won is a bit childish at the begining but the film's entertainment/thrill value is top notch.
