Hello everyone! How's your week so far?

I've been busy with reading Big recaps, stalking Big characters, reading Big reaction blogs, commenting on Big-related discussions, etc.

But I don't watch Big yet because I don't want to get addicted to it. Nope, I'm a mentally healthy Big fan. Not obsessed at all.

So what do you think Mari will do with Kyung Jae? Protect his innocence from Teach or protect his shell from Se Young?

I don't care what people say: I want her to end with Kyung Little, back in his body. :) The Doc will realize the relationship had no future and he will be hired abroad in a famous University Hospital.

I like her with the little boy inside the ajhussi body.
RAWR.
Poor gym teacher is going to get hurt.
I like Mari with the brother who is soooooo smitten with her.
SeYoung needs to transfer out of that hospital..... but I realize she's not going to go anywhere. UGH

Watching BIG and watching A gentleman's Dignity.
Totally enjoying both shows.

Also watching an oldie but a goodie.
LOVE, LOVE< LOVE "What Happened in Bali"
Ha Ji Won!!!!
I'm on ep 11 now.....totally hooked.

I like KJ (the character). In Gong-yoo's body is good, but if he does switch back I'm still shipping KJ and Da-ran.

I think it would be quite daring for the drama to actually not switch them back, whether with YJ woken up or not. I would find that quite intriguing and refreshing!

0

Gym teacher has GOT to have a major purpose. He can't just be standing around, lingering, lovelorn.... I don't see another woman for him (unless the Principal gets human) but I hope he becomes important to the plot.

Gotta say I like stalker babe for KJ. There is faithfulness!

0

Gym teacher has Da Ran's loud-mouthed friend who's acting as his dating coach. The one in the finger gun to the heart scene.

0

Yeah, the gym teacher has the other female teacher! She definitely went doki doki when she "shot" the finger gun at him!

0

Just finished watching "What Happened in Bali".
I am completely gutted.
I'm an emotional mess right now.
I've never seen so much crying and drinking in a drama before.

I was not shocked by the ending.
It was like watching a train wreck, you knew it was going to be bad....but you couldn't look away.
JUST .....WOW
This one goes in my top 5 list (right now)

0

Me too... Thou, I only watched first episode but at this moment I was her to be Little Kyung in his own body. xD

So I am a little confused: do you mean to say that you want Mari to end up with KJ in his own body? I would like to see how that would happen, since he doesn't have feelings (romantic) for her yet... I wouldn't be opposed to it. They look cute in the BTS picture with her arms around his neck :-)

I love her too! Not sure if some of it is from Dream High days.

@mystishish, Mari does seem to have the warmth/loyalty/concern that Kyung Joon is looking for in his money-addicted aunt and uncle, so it's her good point.

She also had promising memories with Kyung Joon - like his concern when she gets something in her eye. But Kyung Jae's chemistry/feelings for Teach seem genuine. So I'm still not sure who to ship. Except Gong Yoo's abs. That's a given.

Still:
- We need more of Mari and KJ's backstory
- We need more of Yoon Jae's actual story
- We need more of Big :D

I'm only 3 eps into Big and I am loving it but I agree with you that we need more of Yoon Jae's actual story. That's the thing that is keeping me watching to be honest. Well one of the things. I'm really intrigued by his backstory since it doesn't seem like he was just a cheating a-hole since it was obvious he had feelings for Da Ran since he met her.

There are just so many questions...

I like Mari as a character in a drama ... she's the most interesting character in Big and I like her antics. However, I don't think I would want to meet Mari in real life... she's a little scary!

Required fields are marked *

I don't like her, I love her!! She's faithful to Kyung-joon, I hope they'll have a good ending. Actually I just prefer an open ending. I don't want to see Kyung-joon end up with Da-ran, 'cause he's still young and he should experience everything.
And I REALLY want to see comatose Kyung-joon WAKE UP.

I have hope that by the time Mari knows Kyung-joon in Yoon-jae's bode she'll do something about that body switch because she's the only one who knows about the Miracle cherub besides Yoon-jae, Kyung-joon and That mother.

Big will airs on KBSW next Monday so YAY, I'm happy to catch up!

If obsession were to be measured in mountains, my Big obsession would be the size of 274 Everests =X

My theory is that Kyung Joon and and Ma Ri will fall back into their affectionate sibling ways, making Da Ran jealous enough to realize that she actually does like Kyung Joon after all. And then Yoon Jae will wake up, and I will explode from delight.

Or something.

I'm hoping that Ma Ri eventually ends up with Da Ran's brother—they're cute together.

IKR? Da Ran's brother is so adorably dim! I definitely want those two together by the end.

Meanwhile, I'm a bit creeped out by the possible DR-KJ (in KJ's body) combination. I'm not one for double-standards (why shouldn't women rob the cradle every once in a while?) and it definitely can't be the age difference because I wasn't at all troubled by the Eun Bi- Chi Soo couple in Flower Boy Ramyun Shop. I think it's partly that DR is a 25 yearold who looks 30 and KJ is a 19 yearold that looks to be about 13 (seriously, if they did a bed scene, it would just be gross with definite pedo overtones). Also, that in spite of all his snideness and affectations to the contrary, KJ is emotionally stunted (severely so, as evidenced by the fact that he clings to the toys and bed from his childhood) and obviously lacks the maturity required to be in an "adult" relationship.

I also think KJ keeps those toys, the bed, etc. because those are the only things that remind him of his mom. Remember the bed flasback when he was a kid with his mom?

Good evening CMP,

I hope you had a good weekend. My weekend was good and quiet. I have been spending time with my friend (I currently live with her), we have been hanging out and doing stuff around the house such as doing the dishes, cleaning here and there and cooking.
I went to church yesterday afternoon (Saturday) and the service and message were so good!!!! There are a lot of good things (and a lot of changes) that happening at my church and it is exciting and very encouraging. I visited with a friend I ran into at church after the service (I had not seen her in a long while) and we were together until about 9pm on Saturday night.
I kind of watched ep. 9 and 10 of AGD and I read a few recaps (I Do I Do, AGD and of course the OT). I also visited and read a few other blogs and posted some comments.
So as I have said, just kind of low key and quiet kind of weekend. How was yours?

Although we have been having sunny days during the week, the nights and early mornings have been cold where I live, and yesterday was kind of cool, weather wise. I hope you guys will enjoy a great weekend (and hopefully beautiful weather) where ever you are :-)

****SOME SPOILERS ABOUT CURRENT SHOWS****

I have been kind of watching Big and I Do I Do. I haven't started Bridal Mask and Ghost yet, though they are on my list. I have read a few recaps of Bridal Mask, and while waiting for the subs for IDID, watched the beginning of ep. 7 of BM (and I think part of episode 5 of 6, I can't remember exactly). That show seems intense, it reminds me of TK2Hs to a certain extent, which would be right up my alley. I will just have to make time to watch it.
I am liking how the lead (can't remember his name right now) is portrayed in IDID.When I read the description of his character, I thought I would have a hard time rooting for him, since he was described as a beta male who hadn't achieved anything in his life (and was kind of lazy?, can't remember the whole description, but he didn't look good on paper). Now, he seems to have always been on the heroine side (can't remember her name right now either, sorry) so far and he has been reacting to her mostly with compassion, caring feelings and defending her to his friend and colleague. He might be young and younger than the doctor, but he has been carrying himself better than the doctor IMO.
I LOVE that he has the courage to state his feelings towards her (even if he did it the 2nd time around because he was drunk). I LOVE that he is protective of KSA's character, without forcing her to say what he already knows (well at least part of what he thinks he knows, since he is now assuming he is not the dad). I LOVE that he is considerate towards her and tries to understand why she gets upset or angry. I LOVE that his character has been consistent in who he is (with her, his dad, his colleagues) so far.
I LOVE that he has a great relationship with his dad and that he is someone who is loyal (can't say the same for Medusa, meaning I don't think she has people who right away stand up for her). I LOVE how he gets emotional when KSA ('s character, of course) rejects him, and also how quickly he wanted to do right by her once he knew about the pregnancy. I LOVE that he has a good heart and that family is very important to him. Maybe that is something that KSA (you know what I mean) will have to learn in the process of falling in love with him and I hope that when she finally falls for him, she falls hard :-), (I now think that he deserves it).

So I have made the jump from the doctor to LJW's character, and that wasn't hard to do, after the way he lectured her and focused more on how he felt instead of caring more about how she felt and about how that was going to affect her in all areas of her life. I do understand (to an extent) where he was coming from (he was hurt and that was manifested in his anger), but I think that when she told him (that she was pregnant), she needed a soft place to fall, someone who would behave like a friend or at least listen to her. He didn't and although initially he looked good on paper, I wavered as far as he was concerned.

I also like the fact that the show touches on some of the issues pregnant women can go through (health wise) if they are not careful and that KSA('s character) is made to confront those. I really like LJW for the lead role, he does look young (which is what they going for) but I think he is playing his part well. I LOVE that his dad had a similar experience (having a child when he was young) (so hopefully he will understand his son when he finds out what is really going on) and that LJW's character wants to act like his dad and do right by his baby and the baby's mama :-). KSA, as always is doing well in her role.
On a side note, I would like to say that although I do not condone KSA('s character) dad behavior and reactions, I am appreciative of the fact that the show takes the time to portray how some parents might react (or have reacted) when facing the fact that their daughter might be a single mother. Lastly, I LOVE the funny scenes in that show, they are really funny (the bathroom scene comes to mind. Wasn't LJW's character chilvarous and resourceful when he did what he did? Another reason why I love him, because he does things like that :-) )
I have also kind of been watching Big and just waiting to see how the plot will unfold. Was I the only one who thought GY was coming out of a GQ shooting (photo) session when he walked back into the wedding reception room to get Da ran :-)?

I also caught AGD late (meaning I haven't watched the first episodes yet), so now I am waiting to see how the plot unfolds. I am mostly interested in the Yoon-Mari (sp?) couple. I am waiting to see what will make Yoon realize he has true feelings for her and what will push him to go after her and stand up to her brother in the process. Maybe the young guy she is having meals with will do the trick. I am definitely looking forward to Yoon being jealous and seeing how he will handle it :-). I also love the womanizer guy (I am sooo bad with names today, I can't remember them), I couldn't stand him at first, but now I find him funny. I hope he and his wife will eventually make up and that they will have a happily ever after.

You guys were right, so many good dramas this time around, and sooooo little time...

@ Kopytko, sorry I ended up not sharing my thoughts with you (about JHW and YIN), I did mean to, but then had to go handle life :-(. Sorry... ( I would still like to let you know what I thought, if you are still interested :-) )

Hi Ivoire, I guess you lived in tropical country with two seasons only. I know how it feels, my country has two seasons, rain and dry. And now with global warming sometimes you get rain in supposedly dry season, or like you say, cold in the early morning and night but so sunny in the day. The days just too bright you need a sunblock, a sunglasses, a hat and an umbrella.

yup, exactly!! I guess we're from the same country???
:)) Nice to meet you maya!!

It's just that I don't want to use my real name so I pick this name instead, it sounds Japanese (hehe) yet its describe where I come from.

Are you a long time beanie/r? I join this community a year ago. :)

I knew it! We are from the same country. Nice to meet you here, momogi! :) And momogi is a cute name, not to mention that it's also my fave snacks :D. Talking about names, I think I've seen someone named bengbeng too here. It makes me hungry sometimes just reading the comments *ngiler*

I've been following db since 2 years ago, mostly as a silent lurker. Although I occasionally delurk myself to post comments esp when I'm following the same dramas that are being recapped by db at the time. That doesn't happen often though since reality (aka school) has this wicked way of interfering the wonderful life I have at dramaland. But, I'm on summer break right now and I'm faithfully following Gaksital and BIG, so I guess we'll see each other often. :)

I completely agree with your assessment of I do, I do. I too at first was wary of the male lead, but over the last four episodes I have changed my mind completely. Actually this drama has made me think about attributes, you look for in a partner. I think in the past I have thought about what I wanted, but not necessarily what I needed.

I am enjoying I do, I do, so much even though the beginning was a bit slow in my opinion. I SHOULD never doubt the magnetism of Kim Sun-Ah.

Hello Tara Sellers,

So good to hear from you. I don't know if you will read this, and I will answer anyway. Interesting that you share my views on IDID and Yay! Maybe now, when you think of a potential partner, you could think of what you would want AND what you would need, I don't know that the two are necessarily exclusive.
I agree with you, KSA is a great actress and she excels at morphing into the character she is playing :-).
I hope you will have a great week!

Just seagulling OT - my best friend's mother is failing at the hospitl, so I'm here but i-net is spotty at best - it's gonna be a long day, I think.

I hope everything is going well for you on the West Coast. I'm rewatching the last epi of AGD (8), and I watched the first epi of Gaksital this morning. Don't know if I'm hooked yet, but I'll watch a few more epis.

All caught up on Big; I think Mari is a scary scary girl, but I'm looking forward to her and Dr Wannabe Fiancee to go to loggerheads over who is in what body.

Good afternoon Shukie,

I was thinking about you as I was posting the video links below. I think you might be interested in watching them, simply because I know that you are very interested in different cultures. I thought all the videos would be highlighted (like the 1st one) but no... I am not sure why. I hope you will watch all of them when you get a chance.

I am so sorry to hear about your best friend's mother. Be encouraged, and I am glad you are spending time with her at the hospital. How are your parents, still doing OK? And how are you?

I am OK, still living with my friend and we have had many a long conversations, which I LOVE (that's how I bond with people) and our friendship is getting deeper, as can be expected when people live together (that or they "kill" each other because they can't take it anymore :-) ).
I had a hard time with AGD at first and didn't see what all the fuss was all about. As I said, I got on it late and so I will still have to watch the 1st episodes. I do like Yoon and Mari (Sp?) very much and I LOVE that she is open about how she feels about Yoon. I can't wait to see him being jealous and fall (hard and deep) for her. I wonder what he will do, hopefully not cook her (bad) food, as well intentioned as he might be (I loved JDG face, the way it fell when he tasted the soup and Yoon's subsequent reaction, priceless). I also LOVE who they casted for Yoon, his face just scream "I can do angst" and I love his gentleness, kind of my kind of guy.
As I have also said, I also love the womanizer guy, mostly because I have seen him in only serious roles so far ("Powerful opponents" and "Crime Squad") and in a movie where he was a pervert, but that was it. It took me a while to get used to him being funny and a womanizer, and I have warmed up to him.

I haven't really touched Gaksital but I KNOW it will be my kind of drama. I hope it stays good till the end and I think I need to prepare myself to watch it and get emotionally involved. I couldn't watch a drama right away after TK2Hs, I had to have some time in between and so I decided to not watch dramas for a while (I haven't been totally faithful to that :-)) Man, Jowoon (sp?) is being blessed with good roles (commercial successes), isn't he?

I LOVE GY in Big, but (and I am probably in the minority about this) I have a problem with KJ being 18 and 19 and her being 26 and 27 and the two of them being/becoming involved romantically. It would be different for me if he was 22-23-24 and she could still be 8 years older. I get that sometimes he acts older and more mature and I get that that can happen in real life, but still, I feel that he needs to have a few more years of life experience and she needs to mature (romantically at least) as well.
I also have a problem with the fact that she was his teacher, not just a teacher. The ethical part of it bothers me (as someone who has worked A LOT with children and teenagers) (would that be OK in real life, for an adult to kiss a minor or be kissed by a minor? It is different when he is 19, because he is legal. But he was 18 when he kissed her).
I thought of course that the kiss was inappropriate (just my opinion, no need to attack me, please) *at that time* and I was glad to see that she pushed him back and didn't give in, even though she did think about it when she saw the picture (I could understand that, she is important to him and she was the 1st woman he kissed). I will continue to watch Big to see (mostly) how it unfolds. I don't want her to end up with Kyun Joon in Hyun Jae's body, I personally don't think it would be fair to either one of the guys. I want her to end up with either Kyun Joon in his body (not really) or Hyun Jae in his and for us to learn who HJ really is, because I don't believe that he was (totally) the way he has been portrayed by 3rd parties, again, just my opinion.

I was also not big on FBRS because the lead was 19 (again, needed a few years so he could figure himself out, or at least be a little further along in the process) and I didn't buy that a 19 year-old guy in this day and age would not know about love, and crushes and heartbreak like he did. I did like the 2nd lead a lot, however. Too bad he had to leave (and he was/is hot).

I welcome Mari in Big and like you, I am very curious about her and Dr. Wannabe fiancee. In addition, this would be my first Hong sisters drama, so I am not familiar with their writing and how they create their characters, so many things are new for me with this drama :-). I also GY better here. He seems taller to me (for some reason...) like he became elongated or something. I keep looking at him and I seem to remember him shorter in CP, I don't know why. I think he is also bigger in Big but muscular (again elongated), so that works for him. He looks more tanned (to me) and being (a few years) older looks very good on him. I like him with his hair up more than with the hair down. I LOVE that he has a very expressive face and eyes and he knows how to use them. His body language is easy to read as well, which I appreciate.
He does cute and adorable really well. There was a scene where he tells Teacher that he ate all the food she prepared and left at the house (after their argument at the school) and that when he grew up he wanted to be a kind person like her. He smiles (in that scene) and he bites his lower lip, sooo adorable, cute and very charming. I melted :-). And then I want to ask him (and actors/actresses) like him, "how do you guys do that?" That's when I remind myself that this is why they are the actors/actresses and I am not :-)... He plays all the different emotions really well and I think he has a good chemistry with his co-stars (male and female). They act well off of each other.

Question:
Is it only me or have you noticed that even though Koreans' skin is white (in real life), in dramas, the guys' skin tend to be tanned (lighting and make up mostly I am assuming) but the girls' skin isn't. I have noticed that in many dramas and when I look at them in interviews and some pictures, their skin look the same color. So I am puzzled by the fact that the guys' skin changes with the lighting (whether it is a day shoot or night time) but the girl's skin usually doesn't. I saw it in "Personal Taste," I see it in "Big," "I Do I Do (with the 2nd male lead)," QIHM, etc... I have seen it many, many times and I wonder why that is, especially since both actors/actresses tend to have the same make-up and be exposed to the same lighting (and mirrors), since they are in the scene together.
I know you could entertain these kind of questions which is why I am asking... Why do you think that is? (And I have been paying attention, to make sure I wasn't inventing this in my head).

Finally back online, waiting for my clothes to dry at the 'rent's house (staying overnight). I'm not sure what the answer to your question would be. I know if you look at a lot of the awards show, the men show up rather garishly to the cameras, and it's attibuted to foundation makeup use.

It's probably that they use different cosmetics than their distaff counterparts, and that the lighting / camera picks up the coloration differently.

Frequently in anime, the male characters are a darker tone than the femle characters, so it's possible that asian culture (not necessarily just Koreans) prize a whiter skin on the female, and market cosmetics accordingly.

My best guess, anyway.

Hi Ivoire,

I wanted to say how much I love reading your comments when ever I find them in recaps. This is my first time to come to an open thread, but its fun reading your take on the shows. I do not always agree with you, but thats the point, its cool to see others opinions. For example I do not know why, but I do not find the age diffrences gross in FBRS and BIG, but I think its because its a show and I am a helpless romantic. Also because in the back of my mind I know teh actor is older then the caracter he is playing. In real life it would bug me. The double standard is something i should work on.

What you said about guys skin being darker in shows, I have noticed it too. Actually, I was just thinking about that the other day when I was watching Playful Kiss. I just went to Kim Hyun Joongs fan meeting, and his skin is way darker in the show then it is in real life. You look at scenes with him next to Jung So-min, and it looks like he spends his days in tanning beds. Now that you mentioned it happens in other shows I will be on the lookout.

And I do not hope you mind me asking, but if I am understanding your post underneath correctly you are from Ghana? How did you get into Korean shows?

Hello- just in regards to the tanned skin question- like a lot of asians, there are quite a few Koreans that lean to the tanned/olive side, so I imagine that's what is being picked up on camera... but if you see them in advertisements and stuff, they tend to look whiter because 'pure white skin' is so prized in terms of beauty. Maybe they're being photoshopped/rendered lighter?

This is just a guess, but I think female celebrities are more likely to look the consistently paler probably because they're always wearing make-up and they probably take a bit more care in the sun. This will also sound insane, but I always imagined that drama make up artists make the effort NOT to try to change male actor's colouring to be less tanned than they are- maybe bc it would look stupid and too make-up-y on camera.

Because this is a place where we get to share our culture(s) and our experiences (and our love of Kdramas and Korean culture of course) and OT is the venue to do it, I just wanted to share with you what was sent to me yesterday, and that made me think of a few other things I have been thinking of sharing.
Some of these moves are from Ghana and these moves (dances) are usually danced in Sub-Sahara Africa (meaning below the Arab African countries), and as with moves and dances, they then become a trend and they usually have a name.
The first 3 videos are the AZONTO dance from Ghana and the last one is from Cameroon (where I am from) and I can't remember the name of the dance right now. It is a dance that has been around for a very, very, very long time...
So I am just giving you a little sample of our dances. Some of these moves give new meaning to the expression "Dropping it like it's hot :-)" and we know where Beyonce and the like get many of their moves from... Enjoy, I hope! (the music, the instruments and the dances). Some of the videos are a little long, but I think they are worth watching. It also occurred to me that some of those moves/dances are found in pop dances/moves all over the world.

1--For this video, make sure that you watch it from the very beginning, when the musical call is done and the dancers come together. This is an "African Contemporary Dance Flash Mob - in Downtown Silver Spring, MD, USA"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cLwsQE1i2-Y&feature=share

This is one of the songs that was featured in the flash mob, and it was filmed in Ghana, I think...

A variation of the AZONTO DANCE...

3--http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gF-a7gt9468

This is the AZONTO dance, performed at the University of AKRON (in Ohio, USA, I think). I LOVE that it was an international event and the comment about "Africans dance good, but we dance good too :-), said by the guy who was filming."

4--http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XmMsuINYyQY&feature=related

The name of the dance is ASSIKO and the dance is from one of the provinces of Cameroon:

Encyclopedie (Encyclopedia of) d'Assiko at "Camtogether Under the Volcano" (They look like they might be professional dancers and dancing they do. Please pay attention to the crippled guy who still manages to dance...) This was filmed in Cameroon.

Btw, last burning question about QIHM. What was that scene they showed at the beginning of the drama where Boong Do was wearing red and he came riding on a horse and HJ was waiting in the car and stuff...Did I miss something? Or that actually happened somewhere?

I think it was just a placeholder preview/prologue to give the viewer a rough idea of what the story was going to be about.

Yes. I guess it's just a prologue. Because the date shown matches the date where they're supposed to meet for their official first date. At one point I was thinking that it could've been what happen if the talisman was not cut in half. But that just me getting lost in all these parallel universes.

Not sure why but I've been listening to a lot of Korean RnB/ballads this whole week. EXO's What is Love is just...so pretty to listen to! (ehem*babymakingmusic*ehem)

I've also been listening to SG Wannabes Timeless, that song is timeless and the MV is classic!

Any recommendations?

Nice and cool here in Japan thanks to a couple of typhoons passing through.

Things are kind of slow on the KDrama front for me. As always enjoying AGD and IDID. Apart from those I caught UTW's movie Never Ending Story which I really enjoyed. Reading the recaps for Gaksital, Big and DR. Jin.

Wonder what everyone-else is watching and or reading.

I just watched episode 8 of I Do, I Do. The doctor was nicer in this episode, but I still don't like him. He's still overstepping boundaries, even if he means to be kind. He should NOT have revealed to An Ji's father about her menopause (and as a doctor, he should all know about patient confidentiality!).

Tae-gang, meanwhile, what a sweetheart! Totally cracked up how he 'lured' her out of the office to eat by snatching her handbag!

Ji-An, meanwhile, was quite mean to him in this episode - the whole thing about "I have never acknowledged you as a man". Umm, maybe not, but you are obviously carrying that man's baby (major self-denial!). In fact, with Tae-gang still taking care of her after she treats him terribly makes me like him even more. He might not be the most educated person around, but I think he's a keeper as he's got his heart in the right place. (I also don't quite get the comments that he's stupid... he's young and inexperienced, but frankly Ji-An is just as uneducated about pregnancies as he is!)

Also been watching Big, which is fine (although Suzy breaking a window to get inside a house crosses the line - that's just creepy and abnormal). I feel like I actually like I Do, I Do better at the moment, but that's because what I appreciate about Big is Gong-yo in KJ's body, while a lot other things I don't care for too much.

Jo-Anne, it's your fault I ended up marathoning Hana Kimi in one night last week!!! (Good, but the ending felt a little flat.)

Watching Nodame Cantabile as well (mostly live-action at the moment, but have to go back to the anime as well).

I have the same feelings re Big and I do, I do. I really want to like - maybe even be addicted to! - Big, but something's just off for me there. I don't even think it's the pairing, dunno...I do, I do, on the other hand, was both funny and touching this week! TK is adorable, and I like how he treats JA with tenderness, even when he took her bag it was playful and not mean. I hope that by collaborating with JA at work he will be able to show his true - designer - colours. In fact, I'm more interested in TK's professional growth and JA becoming a mother (and enjoying it - I think she might), than in the romance aspect of the show. Does anyone feel the same?))
Also, has anyone noticed a slight shift away from Joo Wons and Jun Pyos to nice(r) guys?

I can't quite put my finger on what's not captivating me with Big.

I think it's just little things. The female doctor whom I can't stand (just hate that kind of character). YJ's self-righteous mother who we'll probably see more of. Not a great fan of Mari either although she isn't the greatest offender. And the female lead being too weak and somehow lacklustre - even if in ep 8 she had pulled herself together somewhat. But then I thought she was showing very little care for a teen who did her many favours! In fact, how is that she let him go off to America for a year without any contact?

I'm just watching for YJ-in-KJ's-body character now.

IDID has fallen flat in terms of bringing fun and excitement to the world of shoe design and working the processes into the story in a meaningful way-- I mean, it has got to be more fun and interesting than sitting through power point presentations with bitchy, backstabbing co-workers, right? I understand that the focal point of the story (at least at this point) is and should be Ji An's unplanned pregnancy and her relationships with others and most importantly herself but with the exception of a few shoes on display here and there, you can't really tell whether they're making cellphones or shoes. A shoe designing/production montage would not feel out of place and I hope we get to see one next week when JA puts TK through shoe design bootcamp!

I've only watched up to episode 7 of I Do I Do, but I agree with you on the assessments of all the characters. Ji-An is so unnecessarily harsh to Tae-Kang. Hitting him, treating him like a slave.... I would think she would be conflicted and scared to tell him he is the father, but she doesn't even show concern about doing that! Her friend shows more concern about that. She continues to treat him like a slave, dismiss him when she wants, tries to get information about him to see if the baby will be okay, but never thinking about telling him he's the father. I dunno, she's getting on my nerves here...

Tae-Kang, on the other hand, has taken all the crap that was thrown at him from her and from the people at work and is basically taking the stand that he's still going to push through even after all the abuse. That's admirable. Yes, he needs some more growing up to do, but he has guts and heart... though I hope he doesn't get drunk again.. he was a very loud drunk!

I don't know what my opinion is of the doctor.. he annoyed me with his over-reaction to Ji-an's pregnancy (overreaction since he wasn't even in a real relationship with her), but I dunno, he seems to be trying to make amends and help her (then again, I haven't seen episode 8 yet).

I think Ji-Ah has been postponing it for too long to tell TG about the baby - he has a right to the baby to!

I still like her, but she isn't noticing at all that he's really being very nice to her - more than she deserves. He does embarrass her at the police station with his drunken confession but her 'you're no man' was too much. Although it occurred to me that the only reason why she was insulting him like that was to keep him at the company, but not realising that yet!

The doctor is nice in this episode - concerned about Ji-Ah and the baby, and concerned as a doctor and he does speak up for her to her father BUT he could have just stopped at "Keeping the baby as a single mother isn't wrong" rather than adding the bit on menopause.

I love Nodame! I didn't get hooked on first episode though. It was sooo bizzare for me since it's too anime like. But soon I found myself drawn into the live action and I marathoned the whole 11 episodes! :)

I know what you mean! I first started watching Nodame months (nearly a year?) ago and it made no sense to me as I hadn't watched many dramas yet.

So I stopped. And watched other dramas and anime. And then a friend gave me the anime of for Nodame Cantabile and I watched 8 episodes of that on a long train ride. ANd thought, it's sooo bizarre but I kind of like it! So recently I went back to the dorama version, which was still bizarre but I can enjoy it now. It's just a manga-anime-based drama that operates on another level of reality. But it helps that Chiaki is so gorgeous :-) and Nodame so adorable.

The doctor-patient confidentiality precept in modern medicine is two-fold: the first is an ethical consideration/moral obligation and the second is legal. While doctors in Korea will not disclose information to third parties because that is a clear breach of the law, they regularly do not distinguish between the patient and their next of kin/legal guardian. And, this is oddest of all, they sometimes will not disclose information to or enter into discussions with the actual patients themselves, choosing instead to speak only to their guardians for fear of exacerbating a condition or illness.

That said, the doctor in I Do I Do shouldn't have told Ji An's dad about the menopause. It was totally in breach of both his legal and moral obligations. BUT- and this is a big but- he, in my view, was right to do it. He obviously saw that Ji An's dad was being a total douche about it (how bat-shit crazy is asking someone who's no better than a stranger who happens to have devoted his life to helping bring new life into the world to encourage his own daughter to get an abortion?). He made a value judgement and decided to forgo the confidentiality because he wanted to spare Ji An the pressure and emotional turmoil her dad was going to make rain down her which would've most definitely been harmful to the baby. TLDR: He was wrong to do it but he did it for the right reasons.

p.s. How cute was Tae Kang pretending to be pregnant with Ji An's purse? XD

0

Required fields are marked *

Hmm, I wasn't aware of the cultural factor here - though I know what you mean now that you point it out. It did come up in other dramas before.

I can see why the doctor did it, he was doing it for the right reasons, I agree, but he could have done the right thing without mentioning menopause. But, I agree with your point.

I just loved the whole purse scene. Tae Kang was so adorable, even more so when stuffing the purse under his shirt. I laughed out loud at that!

I was also thinking that both the doctor and Tae Kang are doing the same thing - trying to help Ji-Ah, but the way they do it is different. Ji-Ah tells both of them to leave, the doctor does but Tae Kang doesn't, but instead lures her out to make sure she eats. The doctor too comes back, because he cares, but the way he is caring for her is like a doctor (buying pills), Tae Kang meanwhile has a better handle on Ji-Ah. Both deserve appreciation for supporting Ji-Ah, but I'm still shipping Tae Kang :-)

agree with everything Spjork! someone had to tell the crazy dad and it certainly wasnt going to be his otherwise outspoken daughter. i was glad the doc stood up against that douchebag.

one thing about the doctor patient confidentiality in korea or other asian countries. its not as black and white as in the west. litigation is not the norm but exception there.

often doctors tell family/friends etc about medical condition rather than the patients themselves. i also find it galling about the high-handedness of doctors there who think it is unnecessary/irrelevant to really sit down and inform the patient regarding diagnosis and other medical issues (personal experience).

i am getting a little tired of Tae Kang taking s**t from Ji Ahn all the time. how will they kindle romance if she tramples all over him like this?

I could be wrong, but I am guessing that Ji-an's character is being prickly toward Tae Sung for the following reasons.

Her character, has a thick skin (except with her family)...is very blunt, and can be considered cold. She has possibly developed this personality overtime in order to reach the level of success she has. There is a flashback to where she was a lower level employee, as well as I think she may have talked about how she had to become "this way" to achieve her goals.

She is a workaholic, therefore I think she is just becoming aware that this persona she has embraced for work reasons, has also impeded on her social relationships. Overall I think she is a good person, she just has no filter, and is used to seeing things as black or white. We see clips of her feeling guilty, or a bit unsure of her immediate reactions, for instance, with Madame Chairman (I don't know her name) who wants her to be president of the company. Also we see this behavior, after she has been rude to TK, and numerous other people. We even see it when she asks her new primary obstetrician who calls her on the phone, after leaving several messages. She is like is it important...you can just email me. Ji-an see's nothing wrong with this behavior, she doesn't mean to be rude.

So with TK, she probably feels she is saying what needs to be said, and in actuality his other co-workers and the new designer Jake, have been much "meaner" to him, in the way they treat him. Ji-an, wants him to realize that if he wants to make something of himself career wise, than he has a long ways to go. Ultimately I think she wants to challenge him to rise to the occasion...because she knows that he is lacking in areas, but is good person, with a nice temperament and a hard worker. He stays late trying his hardest to design etc. For example when he tries to quit, she tells him he will have to pay her back for the shoe design he lost, which makes him leaving less likely.

Secondly, Ji-an, is aware of his feelings after the drunken confession, and I believe that she is trying to nip his feelings in the bud. Waywardly I think that speech was just as much for him to here, as herself, when she says "I never saw you as a man." Ji-an is drawn to him, and he brings out a different side to her, one that she has packed away...Perhaps she feels she needs all of her armor if she is going to continue with this pregnancy, and a closer relationship, or opening herself up to TK will just make her journey even harder.

Also I think she may not want to sidle TK with the responsibility of being a father which is why she hasn't told him yet, besides take responsibility "for the shoe design."

Okay that was kind of incoherent. I should start writing my posts in word first.

I was also going to say that now with the two spending more time together, she is going to find out he knows. She is already suspicious, with the drinking etc.

Also...I just thought about...How in some ways Ji-An and TK's relationship, mirrors her mother and father's relationship.

In general, I feel like with this drama, Kim Sun-ah's character is playing an alpha role that is typically held by male's.

I think you hit the nail on the head re: Ji An's character and the intent behind her spiteful words to Tae Kang.

I would also just add that another reason why I think she told him she never saw him as a man was to keep him from quitting. The reason he didn't show up to work that day was because he was embarrassed about his drunken confession and worried about Ji An's reaction to his outburst. She basically cut him off at the pass, implying that his confession is moot because there is ZERO possibility of romance between the two of them. She made it much easier on him to continue on in the company and by playing up to a caricature of herself, thereby negating the necessity to bring up the incident altogether and avoiding all the awkward questions.

Emotionally retarded, yes. Altogether heartless, no.

Thanks spjork, and I think you make an excellent point. I hadn't thought about that point, and completely agree with you.

I too think that Ji-an being emotionally challenged makes the character all the more dimensional.

Hello everyone, just want to update you about the new laws posted this week:

- Poverty Alleviation Act (i.e. how to go from poor to rich in the span of 16 episodes)
- Break-up law (i.e. why and how to break-up in kdramas)
- Second lead act (i.e. male 2nd leads are perfect/swoon-worthy but female ones are always evil, clingy, witches)

And the older ones are still here of course: http://kdramalaws.wordpress.com/

Thanks for reading!

Happy OT everyone!

I'm watching Gaksital and bits of Big, but otherwise my plate is pretty empty.

I was wondering, does anyone know of a good mystery series to watch? Not a procedural or mystery with an episodic format (like Vampire Prosecutor, Ghost, etc), but a drama where the focus is on one big mystery throughout. The closest I've seen so far is White Christmas (which I *adored*), but otherwise I haven't been able to find anything.

I cannot think of any. Mostly it's hidden secrets (that the audience already knows about) revealed at the end.

Ah, I was going to say God's Quiz but that's a procedural drama with an episodic structure. It's quite good, though, and there is an over-arching mystery each season. It's currently in its third season so there's quite a back-catalogue if you're ever in need of a filler show!

Hello everyone,

Happy Friday!

We're at the end of our mid-year break where I am and the kids are headed back to school next week . . . For our last hurrah today, we headed off to watch Madagascar 3 and ended the day with a barbecue on the rooftop of our apartment block. I think we all wished the hols would never end!

Watching 2 intense dramas - King 2 Hearts and Queen In-hyun's Man - has completely drained me (gotta build up more stamina), so I'm taking it easy and reading the awesome DB recaps of I do, I do, Big, A Gentleman's Dignity, and Bridal Mask. Thank you for the awesome recaps, ladies! Just as good as watching the dramas themselves.

I've also been watching a couple of movies on YouTube, courtesy of recommendations from Snoopy's Twinkie - 100 Days with Mr Arrogant (Ha Ji-won looking like she's only 16), My Little Bride (Moon Geun-young), Temptation of Wolves, Innocent Steps (MGY again), Daddy Long Legs (HJW again, with Mr Vampire Prosecutor) and Wonderful Radio. I loved the last 2, and it's nice not to have to wait 16 episode for resolution! Not surprisingly, characters and relationships aren't as well fleshed out as in kdramas, but the movies were enjoyable.

I hope everyone is keeping well! Have a blessed weekend.

I remember really liking the story and found it very interesting and intriguing and wanted to continue watching it but maybe because the wait for the sub was too long? Or perhaps the story was too heavy for me at that time and I want to watch something light.. I remember stopped watching it at episode 4/5. I was Marathon-ing the drama at that time and the sub stooped around that episode.

Thou, I do remember continue watching it after a while (I had loaded the next episode) but I stop because there are other dramas that I watched at that time and I was also busy and then i completely forgot about it until you mention it.. Now, perhaps I'm going to continue it again but too many dramas at the moment. I really wonder what happen to Haru and what is his/her decision on it.

http://couchkimchi.wordpress.com/2012/06/20/park-yoochun-goes-to-bali-for-elle-shoot/

first one is my favourite

Family honour is feeding my park shi too addiction <3
weirdly enough i'm not invested in any of the couples but the main couple though the oldest Ha brother and the girls relationship is cute
I was totally rooting for Taeyoung? and the policewoman as well (despite her terrible acting) but i'm getting a little tired ; probably because i'm in the middle episodes and i've been trying to cram all of that in 3 days

The little grandson and the grandfathers relationship is the most precious adorable thing ever though :)

i need drama recommendations from the currently airing dramas

I loved Family's Honor for the most part. Park Shi Hoo is fabulous of course. And his relationship with the h is wonderful to watch. The change that his character makes once he loves her is adorable. His parents can drive you crazy in the middle episodes, but the h's family is great to watch too. I loved the older brother and his love interest. I also liked the H little sister. The H is so protective of her right from the start. And as the original poster stated the relationship between the grandfather and the grandson is one of the best I've seen.

If you're a fan of Park Shi Hoo, I'd definitely check this one out.

IMHO, the three dramas have different genre and vibes to them actually. It really comes down to a matter of taste. Gaksital is more like action/thriller, and it's heavy. BIG is rom-com fantasy, while IDID is the classic romcom. I like Gaksital the most out of the three of them. But that's because the story is so twisted and full of unexpected turns. Big is my second favorite. It's fluffy, so wacky and the whole body swapping thing makes me wonder how the plot will be further developed. IDID, in my opinion, got a great start, but it fizzle out from then on. The plot is closer to reality though, and it addresses the issues faced by successful single women in their 30s. I haven't watched Family Honor yet, but IDID put quite an emphasis on family life.

OMG did someone say family's honor! Its holds a special place in my heart due to the extended episodes of the CUTE! One of my pet peeves is how little time in a lot of drama that the OTP actually spends being together and in love. Not the case here we actually get to see them married!!!
I love this drama (though it is long and some of the storylines characters are annoying at times). It was my first family drama and ofcourse I watched it for Park shi hoo. He was like seriously evil in the begining (and I kind of loved it) and the love story between him and the girl was so sweet (and believable)!

Hmm kind of feel like re-watching it now...

I know what you mean! How adorkable was Park Shi Hoo once they were together. He wanted her constant attention. He'd practically beg her to spend time with him. Soooo cute! And even cuter because it was such a complete turn-around from his cold evil bastard at the beginning of the series.

Required fields are marked *

I loved Family's Honor for the same reason—it's nice to see what happily ever after actually looks like, instead of just having a drama end with the lead couple getting together. And it's definitely my favorite Park Shi Hoo role so far. The early scenes of him fighting with the female lead are smoking hot =X The end was a little meh for me, but I was pleasantly surprised that a 54-episode show could feel so fast and fun.

So I was working on my literature review (I'm looking to study knowledge flows in multinationals), and found an article on chaebols in one of the strategic management journals. For a second there I thought the authors would actually write about Boys Over Flowers, My Name is Kim Sam Soon, Secret Garden and Coffee Prince. Wouldn't that be an awesome study - business as depicted in Korean dramas? :D

That actually does sound like an awesome study. Some time last year someone was doing a paper on k-dramas, but I think it was more about fannishness than the dramas themselves. I'm doing my research in management, so not entirely sure about this, but I could imagine studying k-dramas using NViVo and doing some sort of content analysis. It would also make for an interesting gender studies research project!
Also, here are some published studies (thanks, Google Scholar): http://scholar.google.co.uk/scholar?hl=en&q=%22korean+dramas%22&as_sdt=1%2C5&as_sdtp=

cmrprindle,
Yep, some people do this - especially in sciences and maths. I know some very young people working in these departments - basically, they never left university to work, and they plan to stay in the academia. In management, though, it really helps if you have an MSc (at least in this system). I think it might be different in the US.
It also depends on where and when you finished high school. In my country, we used to finish school at 16-17, but this has changed recently. I wonder when Shitty Hunter finished school if he had a doctorate from MIT and was young enough to wear those epic pink pants *forever jealous* =)
Maya,
What are you researching? Best of luck with your exam!

0

Yes it's the same case also in my department (I'm in Physics department). I graduated from high school when I was 18 which is the average age at that time in my country. Although some schools have this special program that enables students to finish junior high and high school in two years respectively. So some friends of mine also graduated when they were 16/17. I worked for 3 years in totally different field to my major before finally attending the grad school. :) I'm currently interested in particle physics... :)

Thanks oftheshore! :)

did anyone notice how many korean actresses and actors came out of the closet with their relatinship lately? not to mention that there's the whole ji hyunwoo - yoo inna hype going. by i feel really good about it.

it's so rare of a sight and so great just to see artists actually being normal people and dating.

and i'm just sooo glad yoo inna confirmed her relationship, the two seem so cute together and i'd feel really bad for the guy if the love was one sided.

well, i'm looking for more dramas to watch, i just finished QIHM and now halfway through I Need Romance (Late, yes, I know), but I'm stuck around the 11-12th episode because a little birdie told me the girl's going to end up ith her ex, man i was soooo hung up on the younger guy, the prince charming, because he was just soo... charming and everything that her ex is not. so i lost my will to continue that drama, and now looking for another, do any of you happen to have any suggestion?

Personally, I don't want to see the news of actors and their relationships. Just like I wouldn't like any strangers to gossip about my own relationship. I think, let personal matters be personal and let the actors be professional at work. I wish them all the luck and happiness, but I find it weird to speak about private matters in public. Let them be happy, like all other people are and respect their right for privacy.

As for a good drama to watch, have you seen A Gentleman's Dignity? :) :) :)

It's just saying "Hey, I'm in a relationship", it's not like they're explaining their whole sex life. They're famous, so there'd be gossip anyway, it kind of comes with the territory. I think it's good because fans in Korea can get crazy...they need to get used to the fact the idols and the stars they love so much are people that get into relationships too. So, in a couple years it won't be such a big deal.I mean, how sad is it that you can lose fans by getting a girlfriend? That's silly. Going public is fine by me.

As for YIN and JHW, I like it. It was so sweet and I liked how they controlled the whole situation where it didn't really allow for many unnecessary rumors. Two confessions from both sides and the hype has pretty much died down anyway, lol.

In a perfect world people would take it for granted that also celebities are humans with their relationships and families and nobody would get excited about it.
And actors would be seen and liked/disliked only for what they can do onscreen and not for whom they date.
I know I'm an idealist.

Naw, it's totally true! I mean, when you think about it--it must be a burden to be famous and try to keep a relationship secret. With paparazzi every where? They're bound to find out. Might as well spill the beans before there is whole bunch unnecessary of fuss about it,lol.

It does seem the best Hollywood marriages/relationships are the ones that manage to stay under the radar. I can only imagine that's true anywhere and not just in the US.

I am here to defend KHN's character! To me she's a person without much experience and confidence in matters of relationships, but as long as she isn't clingy, cute-dumb and helpless, she isn't that bad. So she may be not annoying, it depends on each viewer's attitude. (TiaC, we're both encouraging someone to watch a nice drama, aren't we? :) )

I agree that it's nice that she isn't cute-dumb like a lot of heroines, especially since I've seen a lot of REALLY dumb ones lately (Park-Ha anyone?). I just meant that she was annoying in terms of how her character reacts physically. Sometimes she's just too whiny and over the top.

But that's just a minor complaint about a drama I look forward to watching every weekend!

Hi everybody!
How are you doing?
I think I will get carried away if I start elaborating how fabulous A Gentleman's Dignity is, so I'll just state that this is one of the best dramas I have ever seen. Love the characters (JungRok!), love the story, love the breezy tone. Gimme more!

Also, there is the first episode of I Need Romance 2012 out there to see. I watched it and I liked it. It wasn't such a blast as the first ep of the first series, but not bad at all. The female characters aren't as distinctive and fresh as the predecessors, but maybe they need time to present themselves better. I am already interested by the friend played by Kim Ji Woo and her unusual marriage :). The male characters seem a tad bit more interesting, but then again, I might be blinded by crude hotness ;).
Anyway, I am looking forward to catching the following episode. Hope it will be as good as the first season.

It seems to me, we're on the upper side of our Ghost sinusoide. The 8th episode presented the viewers with some sparks of life in SJS character, so I hope he'll manage to show what he can till the end of the series. SJS aside, Mad Cow is my hero in this drama! He seems the best written and acted character so far. He isn't nice, but still I find him likable. The faults and weaknesses make him more of a human than super smart and super attractive officers (I loved the moment when he glimpsed at HyunWoo, then at himself and said: the same suits, yet look different. That's why I don't like you. I nearly wanted to hug him in a gesture of solidarity). Hopefully the writer will use the chance to entertain the viewers with the storyline of MadCow's cooperation with the plunky reporter aka Boiled Potato.

The summer has just begun, hopefully it will be a good drama season for watchers.

Hello kopytko!

I watched the first ep of INR2012, and I'm not head over heels yet, either. I agree that the leading ladies so far feel a little like reheated leftovers of the first season. But since this season so far seems to be keeping the first season's sexy and lighthearted-but-not-simply-fluffy vibe, I'm willing to stick around for a while. And there's also that fabulous cast (LOVE Jung Yumi!). And a cameo in ep 1 by Jung Kyu Woon!

HUH. Actually, the cast is new to me - I don't remember anyone except Kim Ji Woo (I saw her in "1% of Anything" - yes, I like archaeology) and Lee Jin Wook. Can you recommend anything with Jung Yumi? I remember DB praising her, but somehow never got to watch anything with her.

I watched the first episode of INR2012 and immediately marathon-ed the entire first season (staying up ALL NIGHT to do so, of course). The ending was disappointing but eps 1-14 were such a blast! I'm looking forward to seeing more of the latest season especially as cutie pie Kim Ji Suk seems to be second lead <3

What is everyone watching - does anyone have any tips? I'm watching I Do I Do and Big right now, and love them both, but could use another kdrama or two to fill in the gaps between the subs coming out. :-)

I loved Queen Inhyeon's Man! That was one of the best-written dramas ever, IMO. Lovely.

Hello Everybody. Wish all you all a nice weekend.
(sorry for my strange english first...)
Lot of nice dramas and recaps these days - i really enjoy this.
Timetraveling, Bodyswitching, vengeancewarriors, breathtaking highheels....but don`t you think, that one type of drama is missing. A veeeery important type, particularly for this season??? I give you a hint: we had flower boy ramyun shop, Shut Up Flower Boy Band ...so of course we need 'flower boy coast guard' (or `swimming flower boys` or 'flower boy beach volley team` or something like that). Really necessary are a nice beach, the ocean and hot boys with apps PLEEEASE. Not to skinny boys. If they play life guards, they have to be strong (and tall wouldn`t also hurt). I mean they have to rescue also the big and fat ones.
So, who can be part of the team??? First of all I thought of Lee Min-ho - tall, strong, hot (imagine him without shirt...sigh, ahh the weathers seems quite hot this moment....).Then Lee Ki-woo with his nice biceps; he can rescue me every time... Hmm, then Song Joong-ki and Yoo Ah-in - playing twinbrothers. And 1 or 2 cute small boys, maybe Choi Woo Shik as mascots ??? As boss Jung Suk Won could also be a part (...but before that I have to see his apps...) or Jang Dong Jik (quite hot in KIM SOO ROO). Any other suggestions??? Ahh, I forgot, a pretty, athletic, tall girl, playing a physiotherapist or a trainer or so, is also needed. But i have no ideas, who that could be at the moment, maybe you..??
If its too difficult, to choose the cast for this summer-drama, then I am willing to do this. Hot apps have to be choosen carefully!!! Are there anybody, who wants to support me, just in case????

You chose the cast really well! Lee Ki Woo is perfect for that setup. Well, if it's about coast guards, than Choi SiWon has both experience in that type and abs to show off, too. As the physiotherapist I would like to see Kim Jung Hwa, I've been missing her in dramas for quite a long time. The flower boys might need someone to supervise them and I can imagine Byun Jung Soo (Janice!) doing it really well.

Lol I love how the news of In Ha confirming her relationship with Ji Hyun in time for the weekend just makes my Friday lovelier, especially since now I can gush over my OTP IRL. They had amazing chemistry in QIHM, but not many Korean celebrities come out about their relationships. Yet another reason to like them!

That said, now that QIHM had ended I don't know what drama to pick up next. I've been following Big and Gaksital on recaps (and was following AGD and IDID for a while but dropped those) so I'm kinda torn between the two...fortunately cable drama is keeping me busy (Wrath of God 3 anyone?). Also, tvN is doing really good work and I'm looking forward to more of their dramas. That just had to be said.

Hi everyone! Happy Friday!

Haven't participated in OT for almost half a year (OMG).

But now I found my new drama crack : A Gentleman's Dignity!

It's friggin awesome. Not the best drama, but middle-aged men are my kinda thing - plus the friendship between these man-boys is a real hoot to watch.

My second favourite thing is the blossoming romance between Yoon and Meahri. I know a lot of people find it creepy that he's known her since she was born and there's this huge age gap, but I'm a sucker for May/December romances, and I just love the way Yoon is suppressing his feelings for her, which would make the eventual confession (I can't take it anymore! I can't stop thinking about you - KISS) even more satisfying. And Meahri's loyalty to her Yoon oppa is so cute. I love that the 4 guys simultaneously find her exasperating and adorable.

What do you guys think? :)

0

Required fields are marked *

I said in an earlier post that this is the drama I'm most invested in of those currently airing. And you're favorite couple are also mine! YAY! Yoon is just the sweetest thing and Meahri's love for him is adorable. They are the perfect mix of shy and bubbley. She'll help bring him out of his shell and he'll help tone her down a little.

But I really love all the characters here, except SeRa who is just a big b!tch. But I'm hoping maybe she'll grow up by the end and be worthy of Tae San's affections.

SR...She doesn't know what she wants...or she does, that's money, but really hoping she will learn her lesson.

Required fields are marked *

Hi five Rashell!

Yea I like that it's slightly different from the usual kdrama formula in that it doesn't just focus on the OTP, but gives the other characters lots of screentime too.

I know Sera's bitchy but I see it as her insecurity showing. She knows Yisoo is a nicer person and the kind of woman that men would like to settle down with, so she felt threatened by Yisoo's crush on Taesan, and started being mean. But whatever, I really don't care much about her. :/

Favourite scenes are when the 4 guys are together. Especially the opening scenes and whenever they're at Jungrok's cafe/bar. Or when they're trying to please/trick/evade Jungrok's wife. Epic.

Required fields are marked *

The beginning scenes are some of my favorites from the series. Like Yoon dancing the SNSD dance. Or last episode where they all tried to outdo the others in being least attractive. We had the pager, mommy issues, seizures, and a lisp. And then they all back track when the pretty girl comes in. They crack me up.

0

Think mtoh, think...OK, sorry, to hot in my part of the world.

Y&M, I think there was something, and that reason is why TS sent Meahri abroad. Maybe he sensed something will happen, had happen.
Maybe Meahri kissed Yoon, maybe she confessed...

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

Actually that might be true. Cos Taesan seemed kinda serious when he warned her "don't make me put you on a plane again", as if she had done something serious before.

Or maybe he's just a really overprotective older brother that wants to prevent his lil' sister from getting hurt. And its just plain awkward for him to face the fact that his best friend and sister like each other.

Required fields are marked *

With a lesser actor Yoon may come across creepy in his feelings for Meahri, but Kim Min Jong plays Yoon with such warmth and subtlety that we don't even doubt him.

If anything, I actually want him to portray Yoon's desire more. Because sometimes he seems totally indifferent to Meahri, and this hot-cold thing he's doing is really sending the poor girl MIXED SIGNALS. If I were her I'd just be so damn frustrated!

That's why I kinda admire how patient and determined she is in her pursuit of him, lol. She's bubbly and a little childish, but never pushy about her feelings.

0

Required fields are marked *

It is not a popular view, but I am not rooting for Meahri-Yoon pairing. This relationship seems forced. It feels like she pursues him out of habit. I get it that no guy is as good as her oppa, but still, I believe Meahri is not a personality strong enough to be an equal partner to Yoon. He'll be the one to lead and to take important decisions. Quite a burden, isn't it.

Happy Friday, OT!

It's been a while, how'v y'all been. I totally fell behind in drama watching with the time limitation techniques. Which is actually good, right? I built a loft last week and have been in the mountains on the weekends. It's gotten bloody hot recently too. Drama watching has been a bit of catching up: King 2 Hearts after it finished (only to episode 6ish, getting to the first separation), My Girl, b/c I wanted to know what the fuss was about (I get it now). . .

I watched Kimchi Family. Will put it on the favorite list. I used what I learned to make watercress and radish kimchi. It was eaten during a more typically American meal -- hamburgers, hot dogs and kimchi. (BuWaHaHa). Everyone loved it. It was really amusing to see their excitement, but, unfortunately, I don't remember the recipe. It was riffing off of the drama, a recipe my mom got from the kids section of the newspaper, and something the ajumma at the market told me about watercress salads.

I am hooked on Gentleman's Dignity and I do, I do currently. The former is absurd, fun, and occasionally fairly reasonable in its depictions of the bromance. Such a dangerous interaction. I find myself sometimes really giggling while watching I do, I do.

Oh, I enjoyed Kimchi Family to the core. It's a pity it was aired /I wayched it when there were still no fresh vegetables. I was too lazy to make any notes and actually the ingerdients are difficult to find here in Middle Europe. On the other hand i could share two recipes to make fermented cucumbers ;).

Who isn't hooked on AGD?

I've been stalking open-threads for a while (never commented), but I guess I might as well give it a go.

Ah, I'm really loving Big - been addicted since episode 4 (the ending to that episode really got to me). I'm also glad that Daran's finally learning to stick up for herself. Can't wait til episode 7 comes out, and so far there's no video preview :(

On the side I'm watching Gaksital. I'm really liking the fact that the Kang-to/Shunji rivalry has picked up, but for some reason I'm feeling the drama's becoming a little too cluttered - I hate the fact that on top of the current storylines/conflicts, there's the childhood first loves backstory as well - it just feels so ... contrived? I wish the story would also look more into the female characters too, because right now they're only painted in broad strokes.

I've decided to drop Gentleman's Dignity. I feel like there's nothing really sticking out with any of the characters, and it feels like a semi-repeat of Secret Garden.

Greetings, My Wondrous Beans!

Here on the East Coast we are sweltering in 90s plus heat, even on the ocean the humidity is just wilting everyone...but I think it breaks soon, with rain and then cooler weather.

Happy news: YAI loves uri JHW back :) I'm glad for them. Not in a creepy stalker way but it was kind of fun to watch them fall in love on screen and have it be so intense that even we thought it was real, and then have it be confirmed that it IS actually real. So I have affectionate happiness for them as a couple. Plus they're so DANG CUTE.

Gaksital: Loving this. I was trying to explain it to someone and said it feels like Batman to me. The story is more like Zorro of course, but the feel is similar to some of the more recent Batman movies, and some of the older comics, where the time period is sort of ambiguous - kinda 30s/40s, kinda modern, a little dark, very stylish. And the twists the story is taking - I have no idea where we are going except to know that this is KDrama, and we're going to lose people we love. That is fine by me...please keep me so invested in watching that I don't have time to speculate.

Big: finally, a time jump I can get behind. Thoroughly enjoying this. I think Suzy as Ma Ri is hilarious, Gong Yoo is a physical genius as well as a good actor, Da Ran - please get stronger.

A Gentleman's Dignity: Undying love for F44. The visuals, the soundtrack, the dialogue, my uncertainty about EVERYTHING except the fact that Do Jin and Yi Soo WILL BE TOGETHER SOMEDAY...this is probably part of my permanent top 10 by the time it's done.

IRIS: Whaddya know? I love you, and it has nothing to do with TOP. Actually, it's probably DESPITE TOP. (Cause so far, he's kind of ridiculous.) But oh, Lee Byung Hun. I love your short little muscle-y self and your sweet smile. And I'm a sucker for a good spy movie.

Happy Friday Dramabean!!!
So as i stayed up to 3am watching Skip Beat last night, I kept telling myself - Sleep is Overated! Especially when you are newly addicted to a hilarious Drama! This morning however I amended my earlier thought to Sleep is overated until you have to get up and go to work the next morning. Eitherway No REGRETS!

Ha, I like am loving this Drama, its laugh out loud funny to me, especially whenever the lead actress has her evil dialogue with herself and laughs. I know its over the top but its so fantistically fun. Also my first introduction to Siwon, and boy that kids knows how to smolder! The only thing I don't understand is why he (and the other guy) appears to have their dialogue dubbed when he is clearly speaking (i think) cantonese. Don't get it and its distracting. Anyway really enjoying it, though only halfway through.
*Any suggestion for other Taiwanese dramas that have similar feeling. (Its my first one, and now want MOAR!)

So in other drama watching, I had some time off from work and planned on marathoning a new (to me drama) but somehow ended up watching You're beautiful again (forgot how good Jang Geun Suk is in that) which then led to me watching the Japanese version which though enjoyable paled in comparison. Though I did Fangirl out (bigtime) when Jang Geun Suk made his cameo. For guy who is so pretty he has like major major male charisma (especially whe he has normalish hair).

Also finished Birth of the Rich which I did enjoy, and completley fell in love with Lee Si Young, she was hilarious in her role! I watched for Ji Hyun Woo who was charming as usual, however he should never ever sing Falling Slowly ever ever again.

In currently airing dramas, I am watching Big, Gakistal, I do, I do and am on the verge of giving up a gentleman's dignity.
Really now enjoying and invested in Big, did not see the time jump coming and have no idea whats going to happen next which i like. I still hope Shin gets a chance do something other than lay in a hospital bed and do flashbacks. Still not sure on how the ending will play out, and hope they actually know!

Loving Gakistal and IDID but am behind on this weeks episodes so won't comment.

Gentleman's dignity, I guess i don't get the love, but maybe i need to keep watching (I am like 4 episodes behind).

Once again reading Dramabean's Friday OT is good for the soul!
*Thanks to everyone for all the hard work with recapping!

I'm new to TW dramas also, but I can give you my input on what I've watched so far.

In Time With You - best TW drama so far. Really good acting, great story, and the most sqee-worthy final episode I've ever seen. Kdrama writers and directors should take notes!

Mars - reminds me of Boys Over Flowers with all the mini story arcs that seem never-ending. Lots of angst. Lots of psychopaths. Very intense at times. Not for the faint of heart, but well worth watching.

Love Keeps Going - got a bit makjang about 3/4 of the way through and the ending was disappointing, but I did enjoy it for the most part.

Fated to Love You - Loved it for the most part. Should've been a LOT shorter - they dragged out some sub-plots waaaaaay too long. Also, even if you don't watch the entire drama, you should at least watch episode 2. Rockets and jets and trains and tunnels...

Autumn's Concerto - just finished it last night. Loved the lead actress. Also dragged on too long and there was way too much Noble Idiot Syndrome going around, but the single mother storyline always hooks me (cause I'm a single mom myself).

Smiling Pasta - don't waste your time unless you like female leads with no brains, fathers that slap their daughters, and lead males that call the girl dumb and stupid all the time.

Corner with Love - can't say much cause I dropped it after 5 episodes cause the lead characters annoyed the freakin' heck out of me. Not the cast, mind you, it was the characters' personalities that made me want to throw bricks at my laptop.

That's it so far. However, based on reviews I've read and rec's from others, I plan to watch My Queen, Drunken to Love You, and Office Girls next. Hope this helps!

Totally loving Big. But i think Mari will learn to let go kung joon in the end since her devotion towards him is mostly due from the gulit from his mom's death(can they please elaborate more on this ?) and loyalty . And Yoon-jae-in-Kyung-joon 's body better wake up soon. I'm guessing this will be the main conflict later on when Da ran will have to confront her feelings again and find out whther Yoon jae did really love her.

IF they are going to have yong jae wake up in kyung joon's body, they better do it soon. We are in the middle half of the drama already so better sooner than later. I don't like to see a drama rushed to get an ending out cause there's no time. Otherwise, kyung goon better switch back into his body soon. I have no idea where this story is going. There are just too many twist in it. :P

(IF it happens) Da ran growing a spine
Kyung joon maturing
Mari learning to let go of someone she's been holding on for too tight
And maybe Yoon jae for firguring out the diference between love and responsiblity.

Well, hello ya'll. It's been so long, I don't recognize half the names any more.

Summer is crazy busy here, with comings and goings of assorted family and friends. But we love it, and are having a great time.

I registered my teenager at the local Jr College to take classes concurrent with her HS classes. It feels weird to be registering my baby for college, even if she is only 15.

I'm watching Big and AGD, just started on Gaksital. Enjoying Big (I really missed Gong Yoo, so it's nice to have him back in something), LOVING AGD, and I think I'm gonna love Gaksital, too. Only two eps into that one though. I think I may be able to get my daughter in law hooked on Kdramas through QIHM or K2H. We'll see. She and my son are here for the summer while he interns locally. We've been pretty busy so far, she's helping me with some big projects that we've been putting off. But hopefully the busy will taper off some and we can play more.

Have a great weekend, all.

Quickly before lunch is totally gone...

My plan to turn my friend into a kdrama addict is going according to plan! We are both loving My Girlfriend is a Gumiho (it's a first watch for both of us) and she is always anxious for the next. I'm actually surprised she isn't watching ahead w/o me. Now all I have to do is get her to read the recaps, and I think my plan will be complete. Muahahahahaha!

Happy Weekend, OT :D

P.S. Gumihunter (whose real name neither of us knows/can remember) is confusing the heck out of us. First he was the prettiest man she'd ever seen (I warned her that this was the new staple of k-dramas) and then, y'know, he's himself. We're up to ep 7, so we're not quite at the halfway mark...

Trying to get back wholeheartedly into BIG. After the whole coincidental (okay, perhaps fated) relationship handle...I'm not feeling it. I tend to think that another of the reasons why teacher and doc hadn't had sex (other than him having affair or whatever with other doc) was because doing so would present familial taboo issues. What, having sex with the son/brother/whoever after you've had sex with fiance? So this makes it all very neat. Am just really annoyed with the family relationship thing...whatever it turns out to be.

Am liking I like Lee Tae Ri. It's sweet and it's about friendship. Not sexuality, which is a real treat and a great way to go. IT's the only body-switch story I'm liking now.

Glad the celebrities are allowed to be themselves. I don't think we should follow them around or intrude on their lives but this isn't the USA 30's or 50's when stars were owned by studios and had to present themselves as pure and unsexual to their audiences.

Gotta say (in IDID) I don't mind the doc talking about the menopause. Parents of adult women often want grandchildren and I think the doctor's comment to Ji-An's father is like a bit of a wake-up call to dad and to older viewers. It's plainly said: you think your daughter might have kids later in life, but what if this is her only chance? Are you willing to give up the precious family bloodline..just because you don't want to be embarrassed? (Adopted children don't show up a lot in korean dramas as much as they show up in American dramas...so if Ji-An gets rid of this baby, not much chance of an adopted child popping up in the family's future.)

Am so looking forward to Faith. I'm a sucker for time travel which is the only reason I'm following Dr Jin. (okay, am following it cause main actor is majorly hot.) Am watching The Chaser as well. Sooooooooo good. It fills in that large place in my heart that needs a thriller with really mean baddies and is --so far-- as good as Syndrome. Gotta catch up on Ghost and Gaksital. Might watch Nodame Cantabile and an anime Another.

Kinda sad because Locked Room Mystery and Legal High are showing their last episodes next week. And they were fun.

Still getting over QIHM. Heat wave here in NY. Happy weather to all.

Don't mind the menopause talk in IDID... but after some of the lines in Episode 8, he's gone below where I thought he could go. Still self-centered and doesn't look like he's going to change. However, I think some of the actions in Episode 8 really warmed my heart if you weren't cheering for the doc at all in the first place.

BTW, Adopted children tend to be portrayed sucky in American dramas. And in K-dramas Adopted Persons are often portrayed as a source of melodrama (I'm sorry I love you, Thorn birds, etc. *gag me* Thanks for donating to the prejudice against returning adoptees.). The only non-sucky portrayal in K-dramas was My Princess... which got approval also from adoptive parents. (I thought it was fair to the triad except to the sister, but I attribute that to the lack of acting skill.)

My Father also did fairly well too. (I helped sub that movie) Daniel Henney's mother is an adoptee, so it helped a bit. (As well as being based on a memoir)

Frankly, both the US and Korea project their desires for the parents onto the Adopted persons instead, which is really unhealthy.

Only country that does consistently well on adoption is Japan. They have a few flubs, but it's not so bad most of the time. I really like what they do with adoption because they think deeply about the feelings of everyone in the triad neither emphasizing blood or time together as more important. (Also not blaming the adopted person for their situation).

Creating Destiny also had a adoption storyline that had me scratching my head. When that birth secret was discovered basically the other family of the guy she was going to date reaction was - if her parents were terrible people (abandoning their child etc) then she will prob be a terrible person, because she has their blood.

It definetley made no sense and used to create unnecessary angst in my opinion. But i did like the adoptive family's stance that she was their prescious daughter. So i was actually touched by that part of that plot twist.

So true about the American way of approaching adopted kids in dramas. There is always the "help the minority child" or "help the child out of poverty" or "help the child out of druggie situation." Very society judging evil (sinful or pitiful or poor) mother. I guess the biological mother is treated well if she is young and got pregnant and wants to live her life... then her child is handed over to the perfect parent. Unless, there's the father involved in it. Like the korean movie about the dad who wants to prevent his baby from going to the American adoptive parent.

Will see how they handle this... if the dad has a right too. If she falls in love with highstrung doctor, would seed-donor/dad be part of the picture? I kinda like highstrung doc.... I keep hoping he is just one of these intense wary repressed guys waiting for the right girl to warm him up.

Cast listings always spoil the ending... well 99% of the time. So it's easy to figure out the ending.

Still, I think the idea of reforming guys is a bit unhealthy... there should be a sign on some of these K-drama foreheads, "No, he's not going to change."

I think the doc needs an equally traditional chick that doesn't mind being pushed, tugged and manipulated around--but I kind of find his behavior abusive, which raises red flags with me. (Especially since there isn't anything to really establish she liked him and he keeps chasing her in the wrong/stalkerish ways.) If he was a real life guy--I don't care how good looking he is, I ain't getting near him and I'd get a restraining order if need be. I think it's a lack of work on his character from the writer's POV... which seems to be a weakness.

*To do, or not to do*

We all have made mistakes in life, some of them ere simple ones, that do not bring life shattering consequences, some others they will alter our life's in such a way, the at the end of the day we will never be the same individual, for the rest of our lives we will have to endure the outcome, and we will grow either “Better or Bitter”.

I have fallen for our heroine, Hwang Ji An, being played by KSA, the last drama that I saw of her was City Hall, and IMHO her acting in I do I do, we can see her craft at its best.

I am glad that this drama is taking, the theme of age differences, gender roles, marriage, pregnancy, and the most controversial, the one of abortion in a very organic and realistic way, I like that this time the possibility of abortion, is being contemplated, and is the center stage of the struggle, that our heroine has embark upon.

Even when I am A Guy, I am conflicted by her dilemma, and as a man I can say that I view abortion on a different light, but thats for another time, needles to say, I can say that I love the way hour heroine, is coming to terms with the fact that she has become pregnant, by non other than a man, than in her eyes she has not seen, or dare to give herself the opportunity so see him as the man that he really is.

I have written in the past my opinion about age difference, so I wont belabor the issue, but to only say, that I feel that at the end of the day is a matter of perception, and in this case her perception is clouded by that of the cultural norms of Korean society, but at the end age should be not the main factor, but as a side issue upon where a romantic relationship can flourish.

I ado not like the character of “Doctor Charming”, I do believe that he has absolutely no saying, other than to give his opinion as a Doctor, I do feel that what ever advice he is given her, is tainted by an ulterior motive, and not only that he always comes out in a condescending, mean spirited way that he just turns me completely off to this character.

So the question remains so far the same, what is more important; “Work and the conventions of society, or the alternate choice of having a child out of wedlock”, I am incline to take the side of having the child, than going trough with having an abortion, but that just me saying this as a guy, what would I chose, if I was a woman in her shoes?
I hope I can say that I will chose having the baby, but in all honesty, I would only know the reality by being in her situation.

So far I am liking this drama a lot, the balance between the melo/comedy is just right, other than the second leads, I will recommend this drama!!!

Character-wise: Eun-jung is kinda creepy, and then he somehow becomes forgivable. I prefer Tae-kang because he wears his heart on his sleeve.

KSA is beat perfect. I prefer her work when she avoids aegyo, and she is to proud for that in this show. Really superb work from her.

The conflicts Ji-an and the others are experiencing are quite heartbreaking, so its telling of the writers and actors skill that I still find the show overall fairly and sometimes very funny.

The dramatization of the situation is being done very well, too. In general, though, as with many things, real world equivalent lies somewhere of the have to go there to know there spectrum. The feeling that people can control others just irritates me, so in the most recent episode the parents' dynamic with Ji-an was really depressing, combined with all the other demands of the people around her.

I haven't updated the list in a while--too busy watching dramas. (Yamato Nadeshiko should be in there too. A breezy watch.) I tend not to like melodramas and I do like detective and food dramas... Also Japanese psychological dramas are really good too. (Liar Game, Kurosagi and Reset) Slice of Life J-dramas are probably (when they are very good) at the top of the game of any other country's. I haven't quite seen slice of life done as well in other countries.

Hi everyone!

I've been a silent lurker on this amazing site forever and I always follow OT for all your great comments/insights. I've been a kdrama addict for over a year now and still going strong. You all seem to have so much fun on here so I felt like it's time to join in. Also, I have some exciting news and a request that requires the help of true k-ent fans.

I'm a entertainment news host based in Hollywood and tomorrow I'll be interviewing Lee Byung-hun and Ahn Sung-ki as they cast their hand and footprints at Grauman's Chinese Theater. They are the first Korean actors and second(after John Woo) Asians to receive this honor. The ceremony will be the kick-off for the first ever Look East: Korean Film Festival in LA. I'm so excited to see all the films in the line-up and obviously meet LBH and ASK.

So, that brings me to my question. Does anyone have any good questions for me to ask them? I've been on a LBH binge all week and have marathoned most of his movies, Joint Security Area, I Saw the Devil, The Good, The Bad and the Weird, etc. I don't know as much about Ahn Sung-Ki but have been researching his projects as well.

Let me know if you have some ideas and thanks in advance! :)

A character they haven't played yet but they would like to play? A character they would never want to play?

If they could choose one film in the history of cinema, which one would they choose to play in?

Sorry, maybe it's nothing original, but hopefully other OTters will join in with more ideas.
Good luck with your interviews!!! :)

Oh my gosh! I remember the housemaid.

You could ask Sung-ki-shi some questions about how he became an actor at such a young age, then ask him how to survive, thrive, advance from young actor to older actor...or how films have changed for the better or for the worse... and if any older actor took him under his wings... or how he behaves toward younger actors on the set...that kind of elder statesman type question. To honor is wisdom without making him feel old.

Oh, yes, and what kind of genre he likes to act in and what kind of genre he likes to watch.

Also, ask him how he feels about his American Korean fans and his fans throughout Asia, and Latin America....does it just make him feel wonderful to know he's got fans all over the world and did he imagine this when he was young?

You've probably thought of most of these...but just throwing out some ideas for you.

I always wonder what they think of and how they would change the asian stereotype in Hollywood films.
If they think there will be a time when an Asian actor is the romantic lead without being "asian male."

LBH, for example, is a nuanced, sensitive actor who happens to have done action. But BOOM! Suddenly ACTION is all English speakers know about him. His English has improved so much, English directors may even cast him as something other than the bad guy. I remember in an interview he mentioned the director told him he needed to play a cartoon character as SS, not a person, and he was like, "Oh? OK, I can do that, too."
