IU up for Pretty Man?

How strange to bury such news on the weekend, but IU is reportedly considering taking on KBS’s Pretty Man as her next drama project. Her reps have confirmed that she has received the offer, though she has yet to accept.

I thought IU was going to focus on her singing duties next with promotional activities for her third album, now that she’s wrapped her months-long weekend drama You’re the Best, Lee Soon-shin. It would be a pretty swift turnaround to dramaland if she did take on this series, which has lined up Jang Geun-seok cast as the titular pretty man and Lee Jang-woo as second lead.

IU would play the heroine’s role of Bo-tongie, and although I chafe whenever you take a beautiful starlet and insist (within a drama’s context) that she’s not pretty—which the naming effectively does, as Bo-tongie is tantamount to calling her Ordinaria, or Averagina—I can see how IU has the girl-next-door appeal to sell that everygirl persona. Kind of. She’s described as having pined over our gorgeous, lady-killing hero for the past ten years (and we know how unrequited love is pretty much the hallmark of the everyday, nothing-special heroine). The drama will center around the hero’s path to finding both true love and his lost family, and also his progress in seducing ten women. I’m still trying to understand the plot, frankly. I’m hoping it makes sense at some point.

Pretty Man will follow Wednesday-Thursday’s currently rising star, Secret, and premieres at the end of November.

I roll my eyes at the plot and JGS playing another bad boy role. Honestly I loved him in Baby and Me. After that, not so much. The plot is worse.

But like you, I'd check it out for IU. Her acting is not fantastic but I like her enough to want to see more of her shows before giving up on her.

IU can you please reject the role . I pretty much want to watch this Drama .
What's with group 8 ? There are plenty of Rookie Actresses to chose from then why Idol Actress ?
The Crowd pulling factor of this Drama is definitely Jang Geun Suk with or without Ratings He Acts Well . His dramas does well internationally if not in Korea . You're Beautiful had low ratings too but that didn't stop Viewers from loving the show and the cast .
So basically IDK what preferences do Korean viewers have while watching a show . Since many gud shows fall behind in ratings.

I will definitely be watching this Drama for Jang Geun Suk , the guy plays every role with his best . Just wish he gets a Actress like PSH or MGY if it has to be a young actress .

But are there really many young actresses with the kind of pulling power required to make any sort of headway against Man From the Stars?

The industry has failed young actresses in several ways and it will pay the price when the current crop of young actors get to be in their 30s and they'll be acting with Kim Yoo Jung and her cohort because no one in the interim was given a shot.

yeah, it's shocking to realise that there are hardly any actresses in the 20-24 age bracket who actually play first lead in dramas.....and are not idols. Jung So-min and Park Shin-hye are the only two dramaland exceptions I can think of.

Compare this to the previous generation of actresses - Gong Hyo-jin, Kim Tae-hee, Yoon Eun-hye, Song Hye-kyo, Shin Mina, Sohn Ye-jin etc, all had leading lady status by their early twenties. And the current situation is not thanks to a lack of talent - there are plenty of young non-idol actresses who have the skill to carry a drama in the very near future, but will keep on being passed up for idols (especially the no-talent ones - how else do Kim Ji-won and Lee Yubi get to be second fiddle to Sulli and Suzy?)and put in second lead position or eventually move to non-primetime shows because all the roles for girls their age are otherwise going to idols.

Han Hye Rin is really talented. The fact that she's not leading weekday series is a crime.

0

Han Hye Rin ! Yes, the girl needs more work. She's gorgeous, (I have her pics in my cubicle at work ) . I've seen her in New Tales but nothing since.

As far as this plot goes, seducing 10 women? JGS will think he's prettier than them. Pass.

IU is a pretty girl, to try to pass her off as plain or ugly.. that's a bit of a stretch. They'd have to go over the top like Nikki Hsieh in Substitute Princess.

0

pogo, I wonder if maybe there were generational factors at play that allowed even untalented actresses like Kim Tae Hee to rise to such early stardom? Like maybe there was a dearth of veteran actresses which allowed young actresses to shine and then those erstwhile young actresses are now swelling the ranks of veteran actresses, taking away opportunities from newcomers? Hence, 'missing' generations of actresses.

0
2
reply

Required fields are marked *

I definitely think some generational factors were at play because early-mid-2000s Hallyu seems to have had a lot of parts for young actresses, plus Korean beauty standards - otherwise there's no reason why she and Han Ga-in would be top actresses today, it's certainly not for their (nonexistent) acting talent.

That said, I don't think it's the veteran actresses who are blocking the way of young actresses today to rise into lead roles - many of them either do one drama every other year these days , or they mainly do movies instead. They're not really in competition for the same roles as the 20something new faces, anyway.

The problem is that for roles that do require actresses aged 19-24, 9 times out of 10 the part goes to an idol, and often with little regard as to actual acting ability. Sure there are talented ones too, but for every Jung Eun-ji or Sooyoung you'll find a Suzy or (less bad, but still underwhelming) Yoona. So it's not really a missing generation of actors so much as a missing profession.

0

@pogo,

You hit the nail on the head with giving parts to idols --- what actress these days is even afforded the opportunity to accumulate a wealth of experience that can set her up for popularity and acclaim down the road?

And the problem with idols is not that they're generally terrible actors but that they often don't have the time or inclination to actually work at acting as a profession (which is why IU possibly choosing another drama so soon makes me happy because it indicates she might actually see herself as an actress down the road). Someone else equated the situation to giving finance internships to marketing majors --- you train people who aren't going to/don't need to learn anything and you ignore people who might actually fill the ranks and contribute to the industry.

Sad, sad, sad.

I think the production team is trying to lure in Korean viewers???? Idk. but IU is really popular and loved by public. maybe they're aiming for a "double-kill" and targetting national and international audience.

I think so too.

Anyway with or without IU i'll watch this for sure because of Jang Geun Suk, never love an actor as much as i love him and with Lee Jang Woo that's an additional treat.

Required fields are marked *

there the money thing as well, the production knows with an idol they have a ready made viewer base to work off and it much easier to rise the money needed to start a production with a named idol on board, of course that not saying it going to be a hit show but it dose at lest get the production made. As for Jang Geun Suk well it 50/50 if one still calls him an idol actor himself, maybe in a few more years he can get rid of the 'title'. When an actor starts as a singer/Idol the image can last a long time past thier Idol days.
As for IU she always reminded me of a young Jang Nara in how her career has worked out so far.
But yes it is rather hard on up and coming actress to compete with idol actresses, even second leads and the like are Idols often these days

0

Required fields are marked *

Jang Geun Suk is a multi-talented actor. And in Korea his priority is to be an actor, in his profile he is described as an actor first before a singer. I don't understand why he has to get rid of the 'title' (you mean as an idol though i don't prefer to call him that). If these idols/actors are giving their best shot & free to act in films & dramas, then same goes for an actors who are talented enough to sing to embark on a singing career, don't see anything wrong in that.

@jeera

You're right. Let's not call Jan Geun Suk an idol, because he was never one. You probably already know this, so I'll mention this for everyone else's clarification, JGS started in the entertainment industry at a young age, beginning first as a model and then making his acting debut in 1997. He didn't start singing/recording till 2004.

Actual 'idols' in South Korea are groomed/trained to be idols with their first and primary focus on music. Many idols like Kim Hyun Joong are now struggling to cast off their 'idol' designations because there is very little freedom that comes along with this celebrity. Their agencies place a lot of restrictions on them in order for them to maintain their image, and unfortunately, netizens/fans also place high and unrealistic expectations on their idols...primarily in the areas of relationship and dating. For as many young people who aspire to be idols, there are quite a few idols who would rather cast the title away.

I know the script probably had a lot to do with it, but she was so bland in LSS. With all respect to what was an overall talented cast, the drama was the worst weekend showing I'd seen maybe ever. JGS is as much off as on, but he's astounding when he is on and LJW is likeable. So hm.

And this is off topic but: just watched the kbs drama special 'waiting for love' starting boa and daniel choi and I was taken aback by how much I loved it. The premise isn't anything new, but the characters were realistic thanks to a grounded script, and the directing and editing gave it a dash of whimsy I adored. And solid acting by all cast members!

I think she did pretty well in You Are the Best Lee Soon. Both the plot and the script were boring which made her character kinda plain. But she did a good job. I really liked how she reacted when she found out that her mother is just her adoptive mother. I think she did what she could there

I only liked her in dream high, but she is not a good actress. Jang Geun Seok is such an excellent actor. Outside dramas and movies he is a bit-too much weird, however as an actor nobody can deny his acting ability :)

I really hope this drama does well, he needs it lot...

If it were IU, I hope they have good chemestry. And yes, i think she is not pretty, I don't think she is ugly either. She is just a normal girl, as an idol she is very likeable.

I think it'd be great if IU could take some acting lessons if she doesn't already (im not saying this to harsh on her) but because i see the potential in her. Watching her speak about acting in some variety/interviews, she seems to be rather aware of her weaknesses and always listening to advice to improve her acting.
I do think her acting is serviceable, but i think it could be even better if she focused on her acting career. However, we all know that her heart lies in the music career and finding some down time is a rarity for them.
I also think she should do herself a favor and avoid this show which sounds like a potential wreck just from title alone. But, if she accepted this role, i wouldn't mind seeing her again. i like this chick.
Although some of you guys above have mentioned a good point in there being a surplus of idols and not enough talented actresses in the early twenties bracket.
Kim So Hyun and Kim Yoo jung although very talented young ladies, cannot be in all places at once.

ilikemangos - it's not so much a dearth of non-idol talent in that age bracket, as the lack of opportunity given to them to headline things. With some luck, maybe they'll have successful movie careers since idol casting seems slightly less pervasive in Korean film than in dramas - Kim Go-eun and Park Bo-young seem to be doing well at that.

And though Kim So-hyun, Kim Yoo-jung and Kim Sae-ron are fabulous and talented, they're what, 14? KSH may be getting cast as older (I see her becoming the female Yoo Seung-ho, someday) but it'll be years before any of them is ready to take on full-length drama main lead status, and until then all the leading ladies in the early 20s age bracket will be mostly idols.

Is it that difficult to find a actress ?
Jang Geun Suk is one polished actor and definitely deserves better than this girl , since I don't find her looks nor her onscreen presence captivating.
JGS always had some real good actresses casted opposite him except for Love Rain but that can be passed since Yoona is Absolutely gorgeous and had brought out Great chemistry with JGS .

@Diana90

You're right. Lee Jieun CAN act. It's a shame there were problems in YTBLSS' story line as I think many missed out on seeing the growth in IU's acting skills from the first to the last episode. Many of her sunbaes, all veteran actors/actresses with serious acting chops have nothing but praise for her work ethic and her improvement as an actress.

To each his own, though. I guess preferences or perception of one's acting ability is pretty subjective. So just like there are those of us on this thread that don't think she can act, there are also those that don't think she's pretty. For the record, I think she can definitely act and consider her a beautiful and talented individual, both inside and out.

Excuse you, she can't act? Have you even watched some episodes of her in YTBLSS? Her acting was really, really good in there (even the veteran actresses praised her natural acting talents), and she was able to capture her character perfectly. Also, she is plenty pretty.

Poor JGS looks like he has to carry another show alone on his shoulders Sigh.
I seriously hope the Script is good since It's from a Fine writer this time , this kid always put life into the characters he portrayed. As for me his Acting Skills are flawless all he needs is a good Script. As he is capable to take the show forward all by himself .

Read that this show has already been sold out internationally now that's his star potential since there still isn't a final cast up the list .
Goodluck Jang Geun Seok =)

Doesn't really matter who the female lead is but IDK am kinda disappointed with IU news . Maybe Park Min young could do it for me .

Lol. Park Min Young is one of the worst actresses ever. Mono expression at its best. Let them cast her indeed: That will give me another reason to NOT watch this. ;)

lmao, PMY might as well be an idol for all she's 'improved' through the years.

I'm speechless at the assessment of IU's acting here... what show were you people watching? IU was a revelation, a breath of air in a seriously stinky drama.

But then again, IU isn't some cute male idol or actor, so acting skills somehow become paramount. SMH.

Amen. And she's ugly? I'd like that uglyness for myself, just saying. O.o

IKR? Big DBSK fan here and even I want Yunho to stay away from acting. With that said, one would think I'd give other idols an even harder time but IU was quite the surprise when I first watched her in Dream High. This girl has potential that I'd think she'll greatly evolve as an actress if she decides to focus on her acting career more. She's quite beyond cringeworthy bad unlike some other idols and she's got that it factor that makes every character she plays endearing. She's one of the few exceptions I don't have much qualms about when it comes to choosing an idol actor over an actress actress.

This! :-)

There's WAY too much negativity in this thread concerning IU and her acting (or lack of) chops.

I'm fairly ambivalent about her acting, having only watched her in Dream High. She came across as a charming, pretty actress/singer who brought a sweet, fresh breath of air to the role. As for her last role, more was said about the crappy writing than about her acting - most comments were fairly positive for her, at least those that I happened to come across.

So should IU decide to take on this next project, how about we exercise some restraint in the Let's-Bash-IU department and see what develops and how these young actors do? We're all entitled to critique actors and dramas, but how about commenting in a way that's not so nasty/mean.

Really? I thought the majority of people on this thread liked IU and didn't dog on her acting as much as suzy. Those threads are bashing her like crazy. Don't even get me started on the park shin hye threads.
They have it way worse than IU.

poor park shin hye. she deserves better. then again, when she is bashed this much, it means they bother ... reverse psychology .. he he..

Hahaha no worries you can skip watching it , I guess there are plenty of them who'd still watch it :p Atleast she is tolerable unlike IU . But with IU am pretty sure it'd be another idol disastrous drama .

Hmmmmm but wouldn't it be weird though?
if she chooses this project..then at the Year-End KBS drama award later this year she needs to be / sit with 2 male actors, Jo Jeong Suk & Jang Geun Suk, that is if Pretty Man gets nominated..

She wouldn't have been my first choice for the role, but I don't see anything wrong with it, either.

If IU accepted the role, I would check out the drama for sure.

I have high hopes for IU. She was endearing as the overweight girl in Dream High. I think she'll do well in this.

But... ugh. Just thinking about JGS's feminine, pretty, you're-telling-me-I'm-supposed-to-swoon-at-your-presence-when-you-look-like-a-girl face makes me cringe. And okay, I can forgive his pretty face and I was such a huge fan when he was starting, but remembering these past few years with all his weird (bad-weird not good-weird) antics (in real life!) depresses.

So, in short, I'll pass.

I think IU is an awesome singer and she was passable for me in YTBLSS.

Love JGS as an actor. Not so much the weird rockstar-fashion-diva-singer persona.

If they headline separate dramas, i would watch both. But together.....i think i will pass. This pairing just doesnt work for me.

Jo Sung Min would have made a better pairing with JGS though but judging by the synopsis of Beautiful Man, i'm sort of glad JSM turned it down.

IU, I like you. Don't do it.

@Niki - happy that Jung So-min turned it down too.

Why don't they cast someone like Jo Bo-ah? I liked her in SUFBB and would like to see her do another drama (even if I wouldn't watch Pretty Man).

for me , although you're not the best IU.. but no one can say that the drama will be a successful one even before its actually airing ... I wish you all the best !
How can ugly be defined I don't understand ... for me every woman is beautiful
