Healer: Episode 20 (Final)

It’s oooooooover! Are we all still alive? And satisfied? And coherent?

Healer wraps up its run in the spirit of the rest of the series, with one more tightly planned mission characterized by twists that are fun and feel-good… and maybe also a twist or two that’ll take a year off your life. But while there are a few hairy moments, I can report that I’m still standing, still (mostly) coherent, and still happy. Thanks for a fun ride, Healer-ya! K, let’s do this.

FINAL EPISODE RECAP

At the Healer lair, Jung-hoo sits down before a camera, answering questions from a list. One, he’s the Healer, and two, his job is nighttime courier. Three: Was this job his dream? Jung-hoo scoffs, and says that his initial dream was to buy an uninhabited island. But then he met this woman—and he can’t hide his smile—and the dream changed. Like his Teacher said, “I thought I should live with my woman, have kids, and live like other people.”

He thought it would be easy, but “they” won’t leave him alone, coming at him with jabs and attacks. And the most infuriating part of it: “Messing with my people.”

Manager Ahn leads the Double S team to Min-ja’s abandoned hacker den, ransacking her shelves. She’s taken all the important stuff, though, and the guards kick things in anger, which is satisfying.

Jong-soo drives Young-shin home after work and angles for an invitation, but gets sent home instead. Ha, will Jong-soo ever catch a break? She wonders why the cafe’s closed early, and finds her father and ajusshi bound and gagged inside.

Goons walk in, and one reaches for her. He gets kicked aside by a newcomer, whom she tries to thwack before realizing that it’s Jung-hoo. I love the brief cut to Dad and ajusshi’s faces when she calls his name. In between whirling combat maneuvers, Jung-hoo introduces himself to Dad, apologizing for not revealing his true name earlier. It’s cute how he makes sure to warn Young-shin to close her eyes just as he’s about to hit someone, and soon the attackers are knocked out on the floor.

He binds them and instructs Dad and ajusshi to call the cops, report a robbery, and leave out mention of him. Dad tries to wrap his head around everything and demands an explanation. Jung-hoo explains how they’re in danger from people who killed his father and teacher, but his story is so stripped-down that it doesn’t actually clear anything up for Dad.

Young-shin takes over with a much more comprehensive (and comprehensible) explanation, and Jung-hoo just chimes in with “Yes” and “She’s right” and “That’s true.” Lessons for life, man.

Jung-hoo informs them that he will be taking Young-shin away to a safehouse for her protection. But to Dad’s ears, this sounds outrageous and he isn’t having it. So Jung-hoo touches his earpiece and says over the line that Dad won’t agree, and the dads just gape in shock. HAHA. Now this is how you mix rom-com with spy thriller.

Jung-hoo switches to Plan B, saying that they’ll make the cafe the safehouse then, excusing himself for the night while Dad’s still sputtering. Then he turns back to hug Young-shin, “Just for five seconds.” You’d better believe Dad’s counting.

They say goodbye and Jung-hoo leaves… and then whirls right back and moves in for a kiss. Ajusshi has to hold Dad back, and Jung-hoo actually stops himself (awww) and pretends he was just going to remind her to eat all her meals.

Myung-hee is installed in Moon-ho’s apartment, and he asks to have dinner together, since he has something to tell her.

He answers a tipster call while heading out, and finds his informant sitting in a car in the garage. She’s a scared student in school uniform, and she opens her hand to show the message written on it: “Help me.”

Then she slumps over, and Moon-ho jumps into the car to catch her… just as a camera snaps pictures. Gah! It looks terrible—star reporter Kim Moon-ho in the backseat of a car with a high schooler.

Moon-ho sees the photographer snapping away, and then both he and the “informant” run. Just then, Dae-yong jumps in and gives the photographer a sound beating, yesssss, then swipes the camera’s memory card.

That’s when Min-ja presents herself and warns Moon-ho that as a public figure, he’s vulnerable to cheap tricks like this. He recognizes her voice as she hands over a drive containing the “LA video” and advises that he stay away from Someday for a while.

That’s because it’s currently the target of angry protests accusing it of broadcasting false and distorted news. Protesters demand its dissolution, harassing staffers on their way in.

Inside, the staff eyes “Bong-soo” in confusion, because he seems odd today, mostly ignoring them to talk into his earset. I just love all the reaction shots in this episode. Jung-hoo finds that recording from the informant and plays it for his team over the line: The caller identifies herself as Kim Jae-yoon, a biochemist doing research in Russia.

The bewildered staff wonders what’s different about Jung-hoo today as he shakes their hands (and pinches Jong-soo’s cheek), then makes his exit from an area where there aren’t any doors.

Back to Jung-hoo’s interview video, where question four asks about people he remembers from his job assignments. Jung-hoo replies that he doesn’t bother learning names, and that each job entails that he take on a false name that gets erased at the end.

Next question: What was the most difficult thing he’s encountered in his line of work? He smiles to himself and answers, “It was a job to find this woman… When I first met her I didn’t remember her face, because I had no interest. But this woman chased after me, fearlessly.” He chuckles at the memory of Young-shin confronting him in the bathroom.

He continues, “But from the start, I brought her pain. She can’t breathe at the mere thought of violence, but I didn’t know that. Thinking about it, after she met me, her life really got tangled up. She got hurt all the time, and even almost died. She’s someone who smiles easily too. Don’t forget that—fundamentally you’re a person who smiles a lot.”

Oh no, this is for Young-shin. Why does everything sound like goodbye now?

Back to Team Healer in the cafe. Moon-ho and ajumma tell Young-shin that the LA video she’s holding has taken a lot of lives: the reporter who took the footage died, and Go Sung-chul tried to sell it and died. Then President Hwang died to cover up Go’s murder. Young-shin uneasily puts the drive down, not wanting to hold it after all.

She wonders why Jung-hoo isn’t here yet, and ajumma informs her that he can’t come yet because he’s waiting for good news.

He’s waiting from a rooftop, snapping to attention when Detective Yoon calls ajumma… but the news is bad: That pipe was clean. No prints, and not even any blood.

Just then, Detective Yoon gets an alert that a file was submitted to the police station: a video confession regarding Park Dong-chul’s murder. Gah, things just went from bad to worse. Ajumma slams the laptop shut angrily, and the detective asks curiously what her relationship to Jung-hoo is. She says fiercely, “We’re citizens in the same country.”

But Young-shin has seen the brief snippet of the video, which rattles her composure. Ajumma tells Jung-hoo that soon a nationwide search will unfold now, and he sighs that things were too easy. Time for Plan B. When asked what that is, he says, “We have to make one.”

Ajumma tells him that Young-shin’s right here and heard the video. But despite her stricken nerves, Young-shin bucks up and says that they should catch Crazy Old Man before he gets caught: “If… just on the off chance… if catching him doesn’t work, then let’s run away together.”

He reminds her that she has a mother and father she’d have to leave behind. Young-shin tries to sound confident as she assures him that there are lots of places to hide, and that her father will understand, and that her mother doesn’t know who she is. Oh no, is this why Jung-hoo’s making that goodbye video? So she doesn’t have to give up her life?

He narrates, “What man in the world would turn his woman into a fugitive? Chae Young-shin really doesn’t know anything.”

Moon-ho wheels Myung-hee into the cafe, and Young-shin lights up to see her. From the look on Myung-hee’s face, it appears Moon-ho already told her the full story; she just holds out her hands to Young-shin, looking at her with full eyes.

Dad comes upon Myung-hee looking at a photo of Young-shin as a child with her adoptive parents, and she can’t hold back the tears. She tells him he raised Young-shin to be a bright, warm person, and he proudly shows her Young-shin’s childhood photo album.

Young-shin comes upon the sight and realizes, “My mother must know. I must take after her. You know how when I’m scared, I can’t speak, and I smile more. When you’re scared, you go off alone, don’t you? Is it because you don’t want to show that you’re afraid? Jung-hoo-ya, where are you, off on your own, and what are you doing?”

Jung-hoo sits in his car and opens the package he picked up from the Someday office—it’s from Russia. Inside he finds a black cell phone, which he compares to a white phone just like it. The black one lights up with a text message to Moon-ho.

Next he slips into Moon-shik’s house and barges into his study. But Moon-shik’s busy talking drunkenly to himself—or rather, the empty seat across from him, as though addressing his old friend: “You’ve loved for, what, ten years? Look at me, it’s been over twenty years, almost thirty.”

Through Moon-shik’s eyes, we see young Gil-han replying that you don’t measure love by time, but by sincerity and depth. Then Moon-shik looks up and sees Jung-hoo there, and invites him to join them for a drink, introducing him to “Uncle Moon-shik” in the empty seat. Jung-hoo corrects him, saying that he’s Moon-shik, but Moon-shik chides youngsters for getting names wrong: “I’m Oh Gil-han.” Well that’s twisted.

Secretary Oh tells him that Moon-shik isn’t like this constantly; he gets this way when he drinks after dinner. Jung-hoo supposes he’ll have to deal with the secretary today and distracts Secretary Oh with a phone while slipping a tiny device into his pocket. That accomplished, he lets Secretary Oh have his phone back.

Jung-hoo wants a meeting with the Elder, and holds out the return label from the package, informing him that he got a delivery from Russia. So make the call.

That gets him taken to the Elder’s bar, where he’s first stripped of all his devices. At the last second, he grabs Secretary Oh threateningly—and takes back that device before being pulled off. Haha, so sneaky and simple. He sticks the device under the bar counter.

Elder asks about the Russian package, and Jung-hoo asks if his arrest and confession will be rescinded if he hands it over. The Elder assures him that working for him would protect him from everything.

Jung-hoo holds up a cell phone—the white one—and says that it contains a video of people in a village collapsed and vomiting. He says that things are getting tough for him, because the only thing he wants is to live in peace with his woman, but they’re being terrorized at every turn. So he hands over the cell phone, and Manager Ahn checks that the video is on it. Jung-hoo confirms that he intercepted this phone, which was sent from the informant to Moon-ho, and the Elder congratulates him on a job well done.

This has got to be part of Plan B, and sure enough, Dae-yong drops off the black cell phone with Team Healer. On it is the video from the informant (cameo by Jeon Hye-bin).

Young-shin heads up to her room and finds Jung-hoo perched in the windowsill. She reminds him that she told him to use doors, but agrees to his suggestion to go for a drive. In the car, he holds out his hand for her to take, and as she does, she thinks, “When I take his hand, the feeling of It’ll all be okay now begins to spread out from his hand, through my whole body. It’s a marvelous, one-of-a-kind hand that tells me everything’s okay.”

As they cuddle on a rooftop together, Jung-hoo’s voiceover returns to his list of questions. What does he like? “High places, first snow, small hands, white blankets, those strands of hair.” All things that speak of Young-shin. As for his dislikes: “Everything that keeps me from being with those things.”

In the cafe, the Russia-sent cell phone starts to ring with an international call. Moon-ho answers the call from researcher Kim Jae-yoon, calling from China, who plans to go to Korea soon. She asks to meet at the airport, intending to fly back right after seeing him, since she has no visa to stay. But the call cuts out before she can say more.

Over at Double S, Manager Ahn has also identified Kim Jae-yoon, and now Jung-hoo is a part of the team as they strategize. The Russia research team was hired by the Elder to develop new bacteria, but Kim Jae-yoon destroyed everything recently, minus a few samples that she intends to bring to Korea. Ah, she’s a whistleblower.

I love that smug little smile Jung-hoo sends at Sang-soo and Yo-Yo, who now have to work with him. Sang-soo fumes, thinking of how much he suffered at the hands of the Healer, and raises his hand to slap his face… which Jung-hoo easily avoids, making Sang-soo slap Yo-Yo instead. Bwahaha. Let’s watch that again. Jung-hoo notes, “Nice teamwork.”

Manager Ahn also figures out Kim Jae-yoon’s movements and reports to the Elder, who replies that he only needs the samples. Not the woman.

Dae-yong hears this via Jung-hoo’s bug, which also informs us that the Elder is on thin ice within his own corporation. Stockholders will be discussing whether to keep him as CEO at the upcoming general meeting, and he is advised to present a case for himself. The Elder seethes at the idea of being ousted in a coup.

With the details they heard before disconnecting with Kim Jae-yoon, Team Healer manages to narrow down the airport she’s flying into. Young-shin is excited when Moon-ho assigns her to interview her, but ajumma points out that they’re missing the complication where Crazy Old Man will be sending his army of goons too.

And so, Moon-ho decides, “We’ll live broadcast.” After all, there are few people who would dare commit a crime on the air in real time.

Detective Yoon is surprised at the urinal by ajumma, who strolls right into the men’s room and tricks him into checking his fly. Lol.

She takes him to a cafe to show him the informant’s video, which makes him sputter in outrage—who’d be crazy enough to conduct these experiments on their own people? Ajumma tells Detective Yoon to participate in the mission, and dodges his repeated inquiries into Jung-hoo’s identity. Yoon guesses he’s the Healer and she’s the partner, but she won’t indulge him with a confirmation. He adds that there are people whose survival helps the world, and those whose deaths would help it. Which one is Jung-hoo?

On to the airport. Double S’s team arrives in full force, and Manager Ahn instructs Jung-hoo to stick close to Moon-ho, who doesn’t know he’s switched sides (or has he) and will still trust him. After Jung-hoo confirms the samples, she can die. Jung-hoo looks startled, but Ahn says he can leave the killing to the others.

Jung-hoo heads inside with Sang-soo’s guys, and from a distance, Detective Yoon watches the movement. It sure looks like Jung-hoo’s working with Double S…

So now we’re back at the end of the previous episode, where Team Healer joins up at the airport and struts in formation along the terminal. Ajumma hands out earsets, and the other three insert them in one synchronized motion. Then they split up to set up the mission, pretending not to see the Double S guards monitoring the perimeter.

Moon-ho sits down at a gate and indicates that Jung-hoo should join him, then says with an edge of nervousness to his voice, that things could get seriously dangerous. They should rethink the plan.

Jung-hoo says that this is already Plan B, not wanting to fail and need a Plan C. He asks if it’s Moon-ho’s habit to only think about things, and fail the real scenario because he’s only done simulations. Moon-ho cutely complains that Jung-hoo never loses an argument, but Jung-hoo calls out, “Uncle.” Aw, who’s tearing up?

Startled, Moon-ho asks what he said, and Jung-hoo quips that he won’t say it again.

Young-shin cordons off the ladies’ room and prepares her camera and interview station inside. Ajumma reports that the flight has arrived and passengers will be arriving soon, so they’re on standby for Kim Jae-yoon’s call.

Then Moon-ho gets the call. Both teams snap to alert and Manager Ahn instructs Jung-hoo closer to hear the call, warning him to keep his earpiece in. He listens in as Moon-ho introduces himself and says he’s waiting at the gate.

…And then we see Young-shin in the bathroom, answering another call and directing the caller to ignore Moon-ho and find her at this bathroom.

Kim Jae-yoon steps into view, and Moon-ho silently signals at her to move on. Then he greets a different passenger, pulling her along while the Double S guards quickly close in on them. The woman protests in bewilderment, and it takes several moments before the guards realize this is the wrong person. Moon-ho just pretends it was an honest mistake. Whoopsie.

That allows the real Kim Jae-yoon to slip away and find Young-shin in the bathroom. She hands over the last remaining bacteria samples as well as a flash drive containing her research materials.

Young-shin asks if she’d consent to an interview, though she doesn’t press when the researcher hesitates. But Kim Jae-yoon says that she’s in the middle of applying for asylum, and perhaps this interview would help.

At the gate, Moon-ho gets on his laptop and tells his team at the office to go. The Someday team launches the live broadcast feed. Ajumma keeps watch from above while the guards search for the researcher, and tells their backup to wait a little longer.

Jung-hoo, meanwhile, makes a quick change of clothing in the men’s room. He’s back in Healer mode, though I notice he still has his Double S earpiece in.

On air, Moon-ho introduces the topic of the day, kicking off with the shocking video footage of a village in health crisis. It made headlines last year, but nobody knew the cause of the epidemic—but now they have the proof that this was an intentional experiment.

The broadcast cuts over to Kim Jae-yoon, interviewing about her team’s secret research in discovering a bacteria, then working to intensify its poisonous effects. It would then be used to pollute water supplies, which would spur public outcry over the need for regulation—and private companies could then step in to profit.

Manager Ahn sees the broadcast and orders his team to search all the women’s restrooms. He also orders Jung-hoo into action—if they don’t stop the broadcast, he’s toast.

Jung-hoo barges into the bathroom, interrupting the interview, and locates the samples. Looking worried, Young-shin urges, “Let’s stop here.” He just shoots her a look indicating that she should continue as planned, which puts a look of dismay on her face.

Kim Jae-yoon panics and darts for the exit. Jung-hoo grabs her, then urges Young-shin again to keep going with the plan. She mouths a complaint at him, but complies.

Then Jung-hoo drags the researcher out, and Young-shin chases them out with the camera, filming Jung-hoo as he hands over the stuff to Manager Ahn.

That’s when the cops join the scene, and Moon-ho arrives to take over filming. In the chaos, Jung-hoo spies the scared researcher limping away, unaware that one last murderous thug is heading for her, reaching out with a syringe…

Jung-hoo races after them and grabs a cop’s gun, yelling for them to stop as he aims at the assassin. Everyone freezes—and then a shot rings out. But the assassin doesn’t fall. Shit shit shit.

It’s Jung-hoo who gets shot. Detective Yoon holds the smoking gun. Fu-uuuuck.

Jung-hoo lowers his gun, stunned. Young-shin and Moon-ho watch in horrified silence as he falls. Blood pools around him.

On the evening news, it’s Min-jae who delivers the report of a gunfight at the airport, which ended in one death. On the upside, all of the Double S guards are apprehended, including Manager Ahn. On the downside… well, you know. Jung-hoo-ya!

The official interpretation of events is that Jung-hoo was dispatched to kill the informant, and was aiming at her, not the (real) assassin. He was employed by Omega Holdings’ CEO (aka Elder), and now the LA video is finally explained: The Elder meets with a Russian scientist, which connects him to these experiments.

The slain gunman is identified as Park Bong-soo, but the photo is of the real Bong-soo, not Jung-hoo. For that, we can thank ajumma.

And then… we back up to the airport, when Jung-hoo changed clothes and slipped a blood pack into his jacket. I KNEW IT! You faking faker, earning your freedom the sneaky way! He practices his “I’ve been shot” acting in the mirror, heading off with a smirk.

Then after he falls and Moon-ho races to his side shouting his name, Jung-hoo breaks the moment by looking around—and Moon-ho keeps acting while shoving Jung-hoo’s face with his hand. HAHA. He winks at Detective Yoon, who didn’t kill Jung-hoo after all and may therefore continue to live.

Moon-ho shows up at the station to see Min-jae, offering her a coffee and a friendly smile. She takes it, and they walk off together. There’s hope for them yet.

Next, we check in with Young-shin, who’s driving a car (aw, she learned!) and wearing nerdy glasses while talking to Jung-hoo. He counts down, and when she holds a camera out her car window, he takes it from a passing motorcycle. Slick.

She pulls up in front of a house in time to catch a man walking out to his car. She bursts into interview mode, asking how he healed so quickly after being wheelchair-bound at court yesterday. Her interview request goes ignored, but at least she has her cameraman handy to record the exchange.

She turns to the camera in a flirty mood, and Jung-hoo snaps shots as he walks to her. Then they meet for a kiss, and Young-shin narrates her own list of favorite things. “What I like: The sound of his shutter, large hands, smiling eyes, large embrace.”

They sit on a rooftop at night, and she tells us her dislikes: “Everything that keeps me from being with those things.”

COMMENTS

Ahhh, what a lovely way to wrap up a perfectly lovely drama! Anyone who’s lived in dramaland for a while probably knows by now that you can’t count on anything until the show’s actually over—it’s rare enough to get a drama that’s consistently good, but even when you have one, nineteen great episodes are never a guarantee that the last won’t stab you in the heart or betray your trust. We’ve all been burned before. And yet, Healer delivered a truly satisfying finale that gave me everything I wanted, and for that I’m grateful and happy, and left basking in a warm afterglow.

The final episode had its moments of suspense and unease, but also tons of warmth and resolution that left me feeling full of hope for what the future holds for these people once the camera stops rolling. That’s the beauty of the show, in that I feel like there’s a fully fleshed-out world here that will keep existing after we’ve left it, and that we were just lucky enough to get to witness one of the more exciting episodes. In fact, if we all pause to wonder what Jung-hoo and Young-shin are doing now, I’m pretty sure we could all draw rich tableaus of possible scenarios, whether it’s working as an intrepid reporting duo (like their fathers! I love that they got to retain their Healer skills, but in a productive real-world way), or bickering about little things, or being unbearably cute. Oh what am I saying, they’ll be unbearably cute no matter what they’re doing. Preferably makin’ babies?

I loved all the characterizations, and felt that nobody was wasted. There were some characters I wanted a bit more time with, but that’s because the snippets we got were endearing, or maybe the actors are unexpectedly charming (Jong-soo, you’ll get your happy ending someday! Hopefully in a bright rom-com with a heroine who loves dopey heroes and physical comedy!). Narratively, they were well-employed, and I felt like they all fulfilled their functions well.

I did wonder how the finale was going to wrap up all the storylines in one short hour, and perhaps the only answer was that the threads couldn’t be tied tightly with a bow and tons of fanservice. (Then again, fanservicey finales always disappoint me, because they feel like an extra hour where nothing happens dramatically, and we’re just watching people being cute. I prefer finales that are actually crucial to wrapping up the story, cresting in the right places to deliver payoff.) But it was a nice touch, I thought, to show us flashes of the resolutions without playing them out wholesale onscreen, like Myung-hee finding out about Young-shin or meeting her father. I’d thought I wanted the full emotional display, but when we didn’t get it, I found I wasn’t disappointed. Sure, it would have been powerful to see Myung-hee hear the words, but as I said before, the characters have been drawn richly enough that I already know how that scene went, and drawing it out too much could have felt indulgent.

For instance, I didn’t want to waste screentime on characters I didn’t care about, so I’m happy to assume that the Elder goes down without needing to see that scenario. And Moon-shik’s short scene was a powerful way to leave him, in that hell of his own making. It’s grimly satisfying to know that he suffers in his own mind, and that he’s so far gone as to think himself as Gil-han confirms that he is aware of his crimes—that’s better than if he convinced himself he wasn’t actually guilty. The fact that he’s lucid for most of the day is extra haunting for him, because it’s not like he can escape into a fantasy and ignore reality. He’s literally living out his guilt every day and night, and that makes him pathetic enough that I find that a fitting punishment.

I suppose Healer wasn’t a perfect drama, although honestly right now I can’t come up with many things to complain about—I’m sure flaws exist somewhere, but in the overall scheme of things they aren’t things that linger; they don’t register as significant. The show worked on all the points that mattered to me, and more impressively, it never let me down. How awesome and rare is that? Even the best dramas can misstep in places or let you down in little ways—because frankly how could you avoid it in a 20-episode live-shoot schedule?—but Healer had a consistency and narrative integrity that remained constant at a high level. One strong episode, anybody can make. Twenty consecutive strong episodes that don’t flag in energy or tempo, which swell into crescendo and end on an uplifting, satisfying note? That’s a much more amazing feat. I kept waiting for that mid-season lull or that two-thirds-of-the-way needless angst, and it didn’t come.

So while it may not necessarily be perfect, it was, to me, a perfect drama-watching experience, striking that perfect balance point between fun and substance. And honestly, the experience was made richer by having you guys all here to squeal and thrill with, and doing so with a level of thoughtfulness, respect, and warmth that isn’t always a given, sadly. It’s never fun having your own fun marred by flies in the ointment, so I certainly don’t take it for granted and hope that it becomes the norm amongst our fandom! I thank you all for keeping the Healer craze positive, fervent, and full of love!

Hi beanies! it is as Sumee mentioned a few days back, LOL. Many thanks to Wifey, coffeebay especially (among others) for keeping this thread alive.

A lot of stuff in RL happened since I last posted here, both good and bad but I'm still here LOL. I have finally finished Smile Dong Hae last night, what a long but amazing ride :D Puppy has really come a long way with his acting chops since that drama *claps*

I'd like to answer a few of Wifey's questions (you never seem to run out of them my dear, LOL):

Part 1
Q1. My most memorable scenes.

This is difficult as there are many that I like. to narrow it down though, I choose my top two. Both have to do with the insanely romantic romance of SJH and CYS. Forgive me, I am a hopeless romantic by heart :D

Scene 1: The theater handholding scene.
More than the romantic way they held hands, I love the scene where YS faces the light while JH remains in the dark. It speaks of Jung Hoo's conflicted feelings for Young Shin. He badly wants to love her and yet he knows that by doing so will place her and her loved ones in danger. One of the most romantic handhold scenes I've ever come across.

Scene 2: The 'don't make me leave ' kiss
When YS initiates the kiss, we see how JH tries to resist his feelings, but eventually gives in. My heart broke for JH at this moment because all his life, he has been abandoned, and no matter how hard he tries to convince himself that he he doesn't need anybody, here comes this brave woman who finds him and boldly demonstrates this love. This love and affection that he has thirsted for all his life. And so he jumps the proverbial cliff and lets himself be swept away by this love :D

Love your scene choises, Sunbae Lady...you don't have to apologize for being hopeless romantic by heart, I think all of us in this thread are romantic by heart, we're just too proud to admit it...haha...those OTP totally ruined me in those two scenes. I still remember I couldn't think straight for couple of days after I watched those scenes, haha...

Allow me to share below article from Soompii, I really like the analogy of three strands of hair interweaved together as a tight braid.....

Watching Healer gave me that same sense of excitement I get out of reading a Diana Wynne Jones novel. If you’ve never heard of her, Diana Wynne Jones, writer of Howl’s Moving Castle among other things, is fantastic. I feel like her signature move as a writer is to slowly lay out disconnected characters, plot threads, themes and motifs, and then braid them together, more and more tightly, as the story comes to its conclusion. At any time, if you tug on one of those threads you can see it glimmering through the story being woven, brushing up and twining into other threads in turn. And when you’re done, you bask in the afterglow and look at the braid, each thread so tightly wound around each other that you can’t possibly imagine how they began so far apart. Watching Healer was like that.

Healer centers of a trio of protagonists. Chae Young Shin, a young and perky reporter for an internet gossip site, Seo Jung Hoo, the titular Healer, a self-described “nightime errand boy” who takes on jobs of subterfuge for a price, and Kim Moon Ho, superstar anchor of ABS news. From the outside it seems almost impossible to imagine the intersection between these three, and therein lies Healer’s brilliance: everything in this world is interconnected, every thread in a story winds around each other to strengthen it and add color.

A meagre writer would spend Healer’s 20 episode run trying their hardest to create that intersection, and weave those threads. Maybe a love triangle. Maybe a gender switch. Maybe some amnesia. But Healer’s brilliance is in its writing, and it pulls no punches. The longer you watch, the more you realize the braid was weaving itself long before you started looking. That those three threads, that seemed so far apart, were always lying right beside each other, waiting to be twisted together once again. That instead of a braid, what you’re looking at is actually a tapestry, infinitely more complex in scope and rich in expression.

As a viewer, Healer is immensely satisfying to watch. It rewards you for paying attention to what its characters leave unsaid, and its ideals and themes spill over from its screenplay to its visual and directorial decisions. It treats its characters well and gives them a life well outside the bounds of the series itself. Underpinned by a strong cast and fuelled by a romance that becomes increasingly insatiable, I would easily spend another 20 episodes with these characters. Healer has earned itself a place in my...

Thank you coffeebay for that wonderful soompi article! Couldn't have said it better myself. I am seriously considering rewatching Healer for the third time, let's see how it turns out LOL.

Wifey, if you want to try that theater scene, make sure it's your boyfriend who holds your hand LOL. The second scene, pls go ahead and get married before you do so, LOL. Personally, I have watched other kiss scenes over the years that are even more intimate, but for some reason, I fell in love with this simple, yet heartfelt scene, and this remains my most memorable kiss scene. Kudos to JCW and PMY, their chemistry is insane, and I'm saying this 3 months after Healer ended :D Can somebody tell them to just get together or something?

Sunbae Lady, all Healer fans have begged them to get together already, they are such a beautiful OTP couple, imagine how cute their babies will be.... but sadly they are only amazing on the screen, after I watched Healer behind the scene, I realize there is nothing there..... not even a tiny bit spark... whenever the PD-nim said "cut", they always went separate ways, even after that "don't ask me to leave" kiss, PMY just went separate way to grab her jacket, OMG... it hurts a little when I saw that... but that implies they are indeed brilliant actors, they created astounding level of realism in Healerland. I really wish in real life PMY will find someone who loves n appreciates her as much as SJH did to CYS. I have no worries for JCW, he already have us... haha.... :)

Thank you for your answer, Sunbae :)

Ohh... Sunbae... of course it was memorable. I even know the detail about those scenes. Lol

In your no. 1 scene, I'm irritated a bit coz you know, in my real life, I always assume that a movie theater is like my second home. So when I watched this scene, I've never imagined before that there would be such a beaufitul, touching and sweet scene in a movie theater. I want it happen in me! in my real life! hikss.. How come a very beautiful scene like this only exist in dramaland? It's just too perfect to live only in dreamland...

And for your no. 2 scene, your words was very true.So I have nothing say. Your said was complete for giving a reason why this scene was memorable...

wifey, do not try to imitate the theatre scene, you will never know if the one who's holding your hand is really your boyfriend or not, what if he's just a random pervert or the theatre janitor? be careful... don't try this at home...I mean don't try this at theatre near you....
if you want to imitate the second scene, that's fine with me.... :)

Wow, another perspective I learned today... Thank you for sharing, Coffeebay..

btw Coffeebay, seeing how active Healerities were in here, Soompi, Morumoruisland, DC gallery, Twitter Healer Kdrama, etc til today, can we conclude that Healer is one of dramas that has the best fandom ever in kdramaland? Coz I always amazed with their chitchat about the scenes, the feeling/emotion, the plot, the character, the cast, and everything in detail. It showed how big their love and appreciation to Healer drama..

I don't know, Wifey. This is the first time I've ever been so obsessed over a kdrama, I just feel so stunned n confused on how much I like Healer story, that's why I'm looking for the fandom community to justify that I'm not the only weird one who got so invested in this kdrama.
I really don't know much about fandom-ing in kdramaland and I wouldn't know if there are other kdramas out there with crazier fandom. But if we can judge from the number of comments in db alone, then Healer indeed has the best fandom :)

Required fields are marked *

Yes Wifey. Healer may not have done well in Korea, but in the international arena, it has been doing quite well IMO. We get fans from here in Asia all the way to the Americas, we are truly a diverse group. I am a fan of Kdramas, but this drive has decreased for the past few years. Healer has brought back my faith and love for kdramas :D

I'm picky when it comes to fandoms. Aside from Healer, the only other fandom I belong to is Harry Potter. So Healer is pretty special to me, as I am sure to the other Healerites :D

5 Fun Facts about Yoo Ji Tae

1. He does what it takes to perfect a role, including studying opera. For his role as the South Korean tenor Bae Jae Chul, he not only studied English and Japanese but he studied opera singing for four hours a day. The real life tenor he played lost his voice due to thyroid cancer.
And while he admits that much of the time it was lip synching during the film, he did learn how to let his voice out and embody the attitude and breathing patterns of an opera singer.
"The location of the tonsils is also very important," he said in a tenasia.co.kr interview. "Sometimes you see the veins throbbing in a person's neck when they are singing. That's not real. So I tried to sing an octave lower than the song so my tonsils didn't move and my veins didn't throb."

2. He directed the film "Mai Ratima" about a Korean man in his 30s and his mail order bride from Thailand. The film was based on an idea he had in college 15 years earlier. In the acclaimed film he wanted to show the reality of being poor and multicultural in Korea.

3. His mom raised him as a single parent and he's proud of her.
"My mother, who worked as a nurse for a long time, wants to run a hospital for the elderly someday. I want to financially help her realize her dream, and then establish an orphanage," said Yoo in a KBS Global interview.

4. Besides these philanthropic goals he has contributed to many other charitable events. He has helped to build schools, deliver free lunches to the underprivileged, helped promote the adoption of abandoned dogs and campaigned against domestic violence.

5. He is married to actress Kim Hyo Jin, who played Moon Geun Young's rival in "Mary Stayed Out All Night." The couple met when they were both models in 2003. They began dating in 2006, married in 2011 and had their first child in 2014.
"We try to share whatever ideas we have," he said of his wife in a tenasia.co.kr interview. "That leads to communication and my wife is my partner for life. I can trust her and she trusts me. I am happy and grateful about that."

@Snickers sunbae

Now, it's about physics in Healer, Sunbae. May I ask question again? hehehe :D

1. in Healer's lair, since the setting was in winter, can we conclude that the giant screen (his dream island pic) contributed to keep the room's temperature warm? I mean it's from the radiation especially if we assume that the screen always on "on" condition.

0
2
reply

Required fields are marked *

Looks to be LED screen which is very energy efficient. The screen itself gives off little infrared light, also known as heat. There is also not much wasted energy, emanating as heat. In winter in a huge wide-open room, it should add negligible warmth. Would be different if it were a plasma screen.

Ahjumma's place might be warmer with all those energy hog servers and computers (CPUs).

When I test them in a local webpage on my Firefox, they are black and white. In DB comment, they are colorful and rendered differently vast majority of the time.

I'm guessing each browser and/or website may implement these Unicodes differently. Sometimes you can set the browser to override the website's formatting and vice versa.

I fully support the 8775 number of comments in this thread :D

To those beanies who have plans to rewatch healer (TurkishRose, GB, Saema, myself...), perhaps this is a good platform to reach 8775 comments. Suggestions would be welcome :D To be realistic though, I think one episode per day will suffice...we all have other stuff to do. Then we can dissect the scenes and squee over them again. What do y'all say? :D

Lol, I love your moniker Sunbae. Btw Sunbae, you're join Healer email group, right? Is it still active? And do you happen to know news from Lunatic4KD sunbaenim? I remember she said she would go to Korea for 2 weeks. Did she share her Korean trip in Healer email group? If yes, did she meet JCW? Or did she stalk actor/idol in Korea? Coz I really wanna know, is it easy to meet celebrity in Korea? Of course assuming that we know his schedule and location..

0

Required fields are marked *

LOL! Yes Wifey, I may have watched WBDS and SDH after Healer (OM was the only non-JCW drama I watched since), but the 'Healer Effect' remains strong. I think JCW really outdid himself in this drama. Having watched four of his dramas (I don't have plans yet to watch BVS or FF), his acting had improved with every drama that he does.

I can understand the DB queens' apprehension about not wanting to see him in other roles. But this isn't a problem for me, because although I was most attached to Seo Jung Hoo, I love Dong Hae, Baek Dong Soo and Ta Hwan just the same.

About your question, yes I'm a member of the DB beanies email group. You're welcome to join, it is still very much active. I haven't had time to check out all the posts there and @lunatic4kd hasn't posted in quite a while. I remember she said not long after healer ended that she'll lie low due to being busy. She did post her plans to go to SK but to my knowledge, I don't think she has updated us yet on the result of that trip. I think when she went there JCW was overseas.

If it's any help, I did hear news of one girl who went to DK to try to meet KSH but she failed.

Are you planning to go to SK to meet JCW? this might be a bit more difficult than Bali, I think. but who knows?

0

If 8775, another 1000 comments, is a problem, the easiest goal we can reach is 7515 on July 5th, the 28th (international) and 29th (Korean) birthday.

The ultimate goal of 10,000 comments can be on Healer first anniversary.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

@all

Okay everyone, I follow your suggestion, coz I also realize that it's not easy reaching 10k comments or page 28/29 in his birthday.. Agree.. our 10.000k maybe for Healer 1st anniversary, in December 8th (Healer 1st episode).

So, which one is our new goal now? 8775 or 7515 post? and for Sunbae @Snickers, what is the meaning of 7515 posts?

Btw, anyone know why the last page is only page 13 (double)? How about in other drama recap thread?

And sorry coz I can't do much here til thursday, I'm on a full training now in my undergrad campus to prepare freshman orientation the next term. It really consume my time, energy and focus. Hiks

0

Required fields are marked *

In the US, we usually write dates in the form of month/day/year. So 7515 is for 7/5/15 or July 5th, 2015.

Another 1000 comments to reach 8775 on July 5th may or may not be hard depending on the number of participants.

The entire DB changed. Every recap/news now has 100 top-level thread per page, retroactively!

It's likely our fault. The comments page index code is probably not designed to go over a certain limit while maintaining good form and function.

Oww... I see..

Waitt... you said the DB change was because of us?? Huahaha LOL. It made sense, but it's extremely funny. LOL

0

Likely because of us. Maybe JB and GF will explain in another chat session.

0

So it really COULD be our fault? (For the whole-site change). LOL
I was thinking some time ago, DB has never had this many comment count/pages in one recap post, at least that I know of, I wonder if our comment count could cause some kind of malfunction in the site, and then, speaking of, the glitch happened! Lol

Well, I'm not sure if you'll be reading this, JB/GF, but I'm sorry if we DID cause this. We really meant no harm! Really :-) It's just that we love Healer so much and I'm afraid people will still come back here for a while hehehe thanks for your hospitality :-D

Now Healer podcast is also in my daily playing list. It's quite funny listening GF and JB unnie discuss about Healer.. and one of their statements I remember is they only want to see Ji Chang Wook as Healer. They do not want to see his acting in other dramas, coz they believe that the most fit/proper character for JCW is Healer..

0

I am so in love with with the character, Seo Jung-hoo. And if it's not because of JCW amazing act, I don't think I will love Seo Jung-hoo this much. I can't imagine other actor play role as Seo Jung-hoo. JCW is the only actor that fit for Seo Jung-hoo character.

Sometimes I also think whether JCW will break his own record (awesome acting) in Healer or not. But I read some comments that JCW's acting is better and better from time to time, and Healer is his best performance til now. And since we know that JCW is a hardworking actor (even Song Ji Na said it), I believe he will do his best for his next project.. Amen

Btw, any news for JCW new project?

Btw, in eps 7, in around minute 53-54, both CYS and SJH did think about each other at the same time, right? I mean, CYS thought about his encounter with SJH (Healer) while SJH thought about CYS's words...

@coffeebay and @wifey:

I've chatted with the other beanies over at the email group, they have trouble accessing this latest page of comments. Apparently they emailed the DB ladies about it, and the ladies explained the glitch.

I want to let you guys know that they are favoring both numbers, although at this point in time, being busier and with this site problem, the 7515 is more feasible. So I guess after much thought, let's try to reach 7515 comments.

It is great, though, that although this happened, this shows how much we love Healer :D

Hope this problem gets fixed soon so the rest of them can start commenting here again and all of us squeeing together again.

If the problem is clicking on a comment page number, for example 13, then nothing happens. Try right-clicking the page number then click "open in a new tab/window."

I've tried just replying at the bottom of the page, and once it's posted it takes us to page 13, which I'm assuming realistically it's page 26 or 27. I hope it is fixed soon.

And Yes for healer rewatching, i've been getting so excited just thinking that we might rewatch it together :)

Annyyooong everyone, did you girls ever try to send an email to healer@moebius.com or Healer@moebius.com ?? Then what happened??

In my case, it failed. Therefore, I assume that the email address didn't exist. It triggered me to make a new email account named healer@moebius.com or Healer@moebius.com. So, I tried to create it in gmail, msn and ymail. But, you can guess, it failed. My question is, what is it the real problem? Is it:
a. The email account is exist, but in 'inactive' or 'locked' or the setting is 'can't receive incoming email'.
b. The email account is not exist, but we can't create it in website like gmail.com, ymail.com etc.
c. any other opinion??

Thank you :)

First, you have to to www.moebius.com to open an email account.

Second, the most importantly, I don't think www.moebius.com exists. Even if it does, it's probably a private website and not an email server.

If the web address is available, you can set up a website and lease the address. Usually a web hosting service allows you a few email addresses. But, leasing the web address and setting up a website with a hosting service will likely cost you minimum $80USD annually.

So, I'm still enjoying the drama School 2015: Who Are You it's such a cute show, with the mystery and romance. And it definitely has nice cliff hanger endings for every episode, makes you want more lol. So, I know snickers said she is tired of highschool romance, but this is actually a nice drama, so maybe change your mind? ;)

And I'm glad you guys are still here, active as always. I wonder if @coffeebay ever began Orange Marmalade? and what did she end up thinking of it?

Hope all is well with you guys, you are all truly missed.

I do miss @Wifey's quizzes. Although she'll probably be too busy when school starts to do what she did a few months ago...

Any ideas on how to quickly achieve that 35-36 posts per day as kindly suggested by @snickers?

Knowing us Healerite beanies here, though, if we set our mind to it, we can achieve that 8775. That'll make an awesome present to JCW, like someone can snap a screenshot once we reach that number of comments on that special day.

Let's do our best everyone :D

PS. DB, pls pls fix this site soon. Pls....

0

Well, actually I can create Healer quiz again... the problem is, the method, should I leave all question here, or we did a LIVE Healer quiz like before?? If we want a LIVE quiz, next question is, when?

For example if the schedule is...
Healer Quiz 2.0
a. Part 1 : 2 June 2015, at 10 PM KST ?
b. Part 2 : 4 June 2015, at 10 AM KST?
c. Part 3 : 6 June 2015, at 5 PM KST?

What do you think??

I believe LIVE Healer quiz can boost our comments. But it's up to you, gals :D

0

Junghoo's wife's yes for the quizzes, they will certainly boost our comments, but the timing you will have to get a vote from everyone about the timing when the majority is usually online at the same time :)

0

yup, I think we need to have a consensus about the quiz time :D

@Jung-hoo's wife agrees that 10,000 comments by Healer's first anniversary is more achievable.

By JCW's birthday will be either 7515 comments (61 to go after this one), which can be done easily, or 8775 comments(1321 to go) if there are enough chatty participants.

To gmail group: I'm using Firefox on my laptop. It has a bunch of extensions including Ad-Block Plus. I'm not having any issues reading/replying to any comment. @❤Turkish Rose❤ and to anyone who has not realized

DB's comment page layout changed. Now it takes 100 top-level comments to fill a page, effectively halving the page counts. The change was retroactively applied to the entire site. I guess anyone who uses browser history/saved webpage to access the most recent comment page, for example your browser history has Page 26, you may encounter issues.

Snickers, I use google Chrome, which opens page 13. However, whenever I click on page 13, it only takes me to the top of the page. So there IS still a glitch somehow here, that is not making the site function properly. And this is not only happening for Healer thread, it's happening for other threads for me as well. I'm wondering if I need to clear my cookies, and history would that make the problem go away?

I know I'm not the only one experiencing it. So we will see, thanks for the advice snickers.

There is one scene I wish is in the show. I wish that after that hand porn where PMY thot she lost her mind trying to hold JCW's hand (when he stayed over her place) and went into her bedroom. I wish there was a shot that showed how she dealt with her messed up feelings after she entered her bedroom. :)

Have fun re watching!!

Ji Chang Wook news

[CF] Ji Chang Wook begins endorsements for Lonsdale clothing

As rumoured a month or so ago, Ji Chang Wook will be endorsing for the Chinese distributor of Lonsdale clothing and accessories. Lonsdale is a boxing, mixed martial arts and clothing brand that was founded in London, England in 1960. The company is named after Hugh Cecil Lowther, the 5th Earl of Lonsdale. Many famous boxers sported Lonsdale togs during their time in the ring, such as Muhammad Ali and Sugar Ray Robinson, and Lonsdale branched out from there with celebrity endorsements beginning in the late 1970s.

A couple of small teaser videos were provided by Lonsdale, so enjoy!

Healer review in IMDB

(current Healer rating at IMDB: 8,7/10)

A special and rare drama I haven't seen in a while
9/10
Author: Chi Khanh Dang from Finland
6 May 2015

I decided to watch Healer because of my friend. She was absolutely crazy about it at the time it aired, and it was hard not to be interested while listening to her talking about it.

I suppose I should mention that I wasn't quite sure about the main leads at first. I watched Park Min Young in two dramas before (City Hunter and Sungkyunkwan Scandal), and although I didn't dislike her, I wouldn't plan to go out of my way to watch her. My first encounter with Ji Chang Wook was when he guested in Running Man, during which although he was handsome, he hardly appeared as attractive.

Good for me, I tried to keep being open-minded. Apart from letting myself be affected by my friend's suggestion, I also watched a cut from an episode to see the chemistry between the two main leads. It didn't completely convince me, but enough to sense a certain level of their chemistry together - which I actually liked.

So at a certain point, I kind of felt it was time and gave it a go. I kept my pace of one episode a day at first, not quite know what to expect. The first struck of emotion for me was in episode 6, then it bloomed in episode 8, and from then on it was pretty much an one-way street, I couldn't go back anymore. Some days I watched two, or even three episodes at a time. My friend said, "Well, that sounds about right".

The thing I liked the most about Healer, surprisingly or not at all, was the chemistry between Seo Jung Hoo/Park Bong Soo (Ji Chang Wook) and Chae Young Shin (Park Min Young) in the drama. They gave me lots of feels. I forgot them in real life and immersed myself completely into that fantasy world. It was rare since I hadn't been able to totally get into the mood of any Korean dramas as of late, let alone feel the romance and believe it was real. This pair broke the stuffy and frustrating air I was feeling for the past 3 years about Korean dramas in general. It was lovely, adorable, light, trusting. When you see those two, you simply genuinely want them to be together, not because they went through a lot and they needed to be together just for the sake of it, but because they deserve each other. Whenever I saw them, it made me all light up inside. Fluttering. Happy.

Apart from the OTP (one true pairing), it appeared to me that everyone who took part in the project was putting their all in it, and they worked so amazing in harmony together that it also reflected on screen. Both Ji Chang Wook and Park Min Young were passionate about their parts, they gave lots of suggestions and really tried to understand their characters. For Ji Chang Wook's character - Seo Jung Hoo/Park Bong Soo, I think we're bound to love him. It was a guy who was strong and intelligent and brave, and at the same time had this dorky and awkward side to social...

@wifey

I am glad there had been a lot of positive reviews of Healer after almost 3 months after it ended!

That was the same reaction i got from my friends whom i asked to watch Healer. They are kind of cynical the first time, but when i show them a cut (esp eps 15) they would eventually gave in and watched the show. And alas! They all have the same reaction, they were all amazed by how great the show is, the OTPs, and became also a fan of JCW...

Congratulations @wifey, we are now at 7550 comments and counting????

C U R R E N T L Y ? W A T C H I N G ? D R A M A S

So, I started watching yet another LIVE drama (yes, I know I'm bad) but this one is somehow related to Ji chang wook, so cut me some slack :)

The drama is titled, MASK for the actor Joo Ji Hyun. He was JCW's close friend, who went to Thailand with him. And they were also close friends since they co-starred together in FIVE FINGERS. But, the reason I was drawn to the drama, not because of the actors, but because of the writers.

It's the same writer that wrote one of my favorite dramas, SECRET. It's more melodrama, if you are into that kind of thing. But, I was so amazed by SECRET that I had to watch the first two episodes of MASK. And it really delivered. I loved the mystery, and the sad situation that our main lead is in (Joo Ji Hyun), so I'm really anticipating this one.

I think I might give up Orange Marmalade soon. Somehow, with the pace of the show, and the storyline is not as amazing as the first two episodes. And it doesn't help that I like the second lead more than the main actor. I'll wait a little bit more, but I might give it up soon.

I'm still enjoying School 2015: Who Are You very much. Even though I'm also rooting yet again for the second lead. But, the pacing and the mystery plot in this one is oh so good. It keeps me on the edge of my seat the whole time, so this one is totally recommended. :)

Even though, I've watched a couple of dramas after HEALER, yet nothing has exceeded the thrill of watching healer. Even though I'm enjoying the currently airing dramas, but nothing grasp you to the point that you can not watch anything on the side, like i had with healer.

I watched HEALER while it aired, and for the life of me, I could not watch anything else. All my wait time was used up searching about JCW, watching YOUTUBE mvs' about our couple, and looking up pictures and gifs and spoilers. It was a truly a new experience, and a beautiful journey. ❤❤

The only show that I've watched post healer that was truly epic, and it also got a 10/10 rating for me was Gaksital : Bridal Mask I still highly highly recommend this drama. :)

I replied to you below and also want to reply here... Yes!!! I feel and felt the same way about Healer and other dramas. No other show did that to me ... ie kept me engaged to the exclusion of all else (not just all shows but practically everything) I remember not enough sleep, rushing through meals, deciding to take time off work, etc, etc. LOL!

The only thing I did not do was to avidly hunt JCW or Healer-related stuff down in everything. I did watch Youtube and MVs etc but not in an extreme way. However the show itself and DB and commenting was air and food to me!!! Truly crazy but awesome times!!

Hi Everyone!
It's so lovely to be back here and to read you again! I'm also delighted that there are a number of us who are going to re-watch Healer and spazz here.

I'd wanted to start earlier to post, but I've been out most of the day and am finally resting my poor blistered feet and am rewarding myself with a visit to this Healer thread.

So those of us who've started re-watching... shall we begin???? :D

I see that @Seo In Na has written a short review of Episode 1 in Comment 1287, which I'm copying and pasting here so that more of Episode 1 thoughts from us are sort of together...

Healer episode 1 review:

a. Nice action scene at the tunnel.
b. A big screen (LED) in Healer’s lair made the place like a movie theater
c. BSS and the gang was very funny. I supposed they will be very smart and good in fighting. But in fact, it wasn’t."

My comment will come in next level sub-thread....

Hi @Seo In Na
Thanks for your review of Ep 1.

Even before that action scene in the tunnel, I was already drawn in ... sort of literally pulled along into the home of Healer by the camera's moving rapidly and low through the vents and into rooms to the arousing melody of Highlight. That melody made such a mark that every time I hear Highlight, I feel uplifted and end up smiling to myself!

I did like the action scene in the tunnel, except I wished there was more light so that I could catch all the moves. What I liked about it was how Healer was keeping up a conversation with Ahjumma on and off and also trying to rationalise with the biggest goon to take a break and get his friends off the track. And the juxtaposition of Ahjumma doing the countdown in that boring, dead tone as Healer was doing that exciting fight LOL!

The funniest part was biggest goon falling and pinning Healer down, after that flying backflip kick of Healer's. And Healer's cry of dismay LOLOL! and what seemed like a fruitless struggle to get free.

Then the train comes through and my heart is in my throat... and Ahjumma saying "Oy Healer-ya... Helloooo... Yeobusaeyo?" (Hahaha!) and finally there is Healer, getting off the tracks, scolding Ahjumma and complaining that he's not being paid enough for this job!

It was a hilarious contrast of the serious, high-action, highly stressful situation with the mundane tones of Ahjumma and the mundane concerns of Healer that really got me. Even from this point I was already hooked and knew I'd want to watch this show for Healer and Ahjumma even if for nothing else. :)

You mentioned "A big screen (LED) in Healer’s lair made the place like a movie theater"

Yes that's true... what with the muted lighting in the lair.

I was struck by the very techie-ness of the show from the start. The first thing that came with the opening sequence was "System Checking" on the screen and computer sounds. Then the camera skimming low into the lair and the mess of his place (typical single guy's pad?). So the set up with the big screen and all those computer monitors seemed very appropriate. It set the tone for the relationship with Healer and Ahjumma and the world as far as he was concerned at that time.

All his thinking/communication and most interactions were through IT, such as all the info he needed, the monitoring of his health and movements ... And the only other thing he ever paid attention to was the leopard video and the picture of "his" island. He lived in a very electronic world, somewhat removed from people, until Young Shin came along. It was Moon Ho's request for him to find out more about her that got him to thrust himself into her life. If not for that.... he would have remained a remote, seemingly indifferent oddball and alone.

I remember how we commented that it was sad how he could not even say "Chal Meogetsumnida" (Thanks for the meal/I will eat well) completely that first meal with YS and her family, because he was so used to only eating convenience food by himself.

That was one of the many times I yearned for Jung Hoo to be able to grow more fully as a social being, to be willing to open himself up and be more like the kid he was with Teacher. :)

Oh yes... the other thing I thought of and forgot to mention...

With the techie-ness of Ahjumma and the beginning which shows that we are in the "System Checking"... with our characters, I really like the way our characters are introduced to us with computer text appearing as typed input on our screens - telling us a bit about what Healer does, how much he earns and his dream... and the same with Young Shin and Moon Ho. Again, now that I look at it, it was a great and most appropriate way to introduce us 'quickly' to enough of each character as we got into the show.

The other introduction to characters that was very good was showing the young Myung Hee and young Moon Shik morph into their older selves. Again the use of computer graphics in a show with so much that is high tech and such advanced technology. Yet the best part is that like Ahjumma who did leave her lair to meet with people, the personal contact that Writer-nim wanted to emphasize, did not get forgotten. I like it that in the end, it was the people who thought of others and felt and loved who won the day while those like robots (Moon Shik, Sec Oh) sadly lost out on humanity and sanity.

We need to comment again on the character of Moon Shik... mixture of villain and pathetic victim?

You also mentioned "c. BSS and the gang was very funny. I supposed they will be very smart and good in fighting. But in fact, it wasn’t.”

That was the other great contrast that was well worked into the comedy and into showing us more of Healer's abilities. The Double S goons were so many thugs, but it took only 1 Healer to put them all to shame. I have to admit, though, that Healer himself did not avoid being a bit of a thug too... he did spend time in a Juvenile Institution after all, but his Parkour, speed, silence and intelligence just won out over SS every time, even when he was not being thug-like. :)

GB, omg the excitement of watching the first episode. It's truly exhilarating. I loved the action scenes, and I loved the opening scene too, into Healer home.

When the camera focused on Healer playing tennis, the first thought that came to my head was "who is this actor that I've never seen before?" I was interested in the drama, but not yet pulled in. The next couple of episodes were so beautiful that they kept me watching, I felt healer on my screen made my heart flutter every time, even though there was no romance developing yet. But, somehow I felt his one sided love for youngshin. I loved the story development. I liked all the characters, and their background stories, and I felt like I was interested in knowing about them. I never had the need to fast forward to anything.

Then, I began to truly feel immersed, obsessed, and in love with the drama when Episode 8 came. I knew at that moment I was a hopeless case, and I couldn't think about anything else except healer. That was how love of healer was produced, and there was no way in ever going back...

hehe :)

So true... Getting all the feels again!! It's amazing when we already know what's going to happen.

This was the only show that really obssessed me. That was both a wonderful thing and scary... how was it that a sane, rational person like me could abandon normal life and just live and think Healer for so many weeks!!! I remember how we all asked each other if we were crazy or were relieved that we were not the only ones. No other show had the same pull and power although I know King2Hearts, Misaeng, KMHM came close.

It was such a wonderful, exhilarating ride... none of us really wanted to get off... and so here we are... back on again LOLOL! Isn't it great!

Hi Turkishrose

I got already excited when news of Healer broke out in DB sometime last July 2014. One because i am already a fan of JCW ever since SDH he is my first Korean actor crush hihi. And the idea him teaming up with PMY who i like as well as an actress seems too great! I even commented in DB during those times. i never thought i will be as crazy as now with Healer! Just like you and the others, there had been no drama after Healer that i got interested with with much enthusiasm as Healer. Healer is the only drama that i have watched via live streaming, the only drama i have invested much of my time spazzing, stalking and screaming. Never a drama as this one that my zeal and obsession has waned even after months it ended.
Healer is a total package as everyone also mentioned, the feels is just a bonus as well as the actors, it is the story that has me glued until now and i never would know when will this end!
Good to be with you again and with the others in reliving the Healer mania!

...continued...

5. When KMH entered his apartment, I got goosebumps (first time I felt this) because the near total darkness of his apartment reflects about his feelings about the past that permeates and darkens his present. That he remains a prisoner of the past. Something that some of us in real life, I'm sure, can relate to.

When he mentioned, "If I could find that child, perhaps tomorrow could come to me?" Ah. I almost cried.

6. We are introduced to the five people connected to KMH and who were the victims of the said past incident. It's a wonderful trip back to memory lane for me personally. I have always loved the 90s (I am only a few years older than JH and YS) and it is interesting to see how different media freedom is in various countries.

7. And we meet Myeong Hee. Having watched Do Ji Won in smile Dong Hae, I find her quite different from the last two Healer rewatching that I've done. This is probably because I grew to love her adorable Anna Laker" image (who wouldn't after watching 159 episodes with her on all of them LOL). I am looking forward to getting reacquainted with Myeong Hee once again, I am already feeling her immense love and loss of her daughter. DJW portrays mother roles quite well.

...and lastly...

8. The mission that will change JH's life. When he is given the task of investigating YS *giggles* Oh boy, those two don't know what they're in for. I remember on episode 20 how JH said in his video that YS changed his dream :D

Am so looking forward to watching the rest of the series again :D

Good to see you all here! 8775 FIGHTING!!! :D

Yup, you've got the feels! :) We were all so full of feels... that was what got us commenting like crazy and de-lurking. We just had to share how we felt because what this show did right was to make us really feel for each character.

Somewhere, we should once again discuss Moon Shik. He has been painted black with greys... but I know that there was a suggestion that we should feel sad and sorry for him who bore the brunt of guilt because he wanted to help Myung Hee against Elder. So much more other feels here as well! :)

Hi GB!

So at last I managed to get through the first episode of my third rewatch (my apologies again, though, for the delay) :D

Ah. After my last rewatch about 3-4 months back, Healer feels just as good and just as interesting.

Here are my tidbits about Episode 1:

1. Love the opening scene, it's so high tech, already gives you a feel more or less of who Healer is, then we actually get to know him bit by bit as the episode progresses. I have a lot of similarities with SJH so I have become very attached to this character (and only this in Kdrama land).

2. The intro on the three main characters is just right. Writer nim did an awesome job on this. I mean, I like to read a lot but sometimes it's nice to get concise info without reading several lines or seeing several scenes. Both SJH and CYS's goals started simple enough. KMH's was the one that caught my eye like it did the first time around. "To last each day. And...to find that child." This is a glimpse of the burden our star reporter has been carrying around for over two decades.

3. The fight scene at the tunnel. Ah I am still frustrated because it was too dark to really see any action. This is one of the few things about this drama that I still lament.

4. I am wondering, when CYS grabbed Healer's pic from SS's car and kissed it, if perhaps she was already a little in love and awe of Healer? I mean, sure she knows he's an errand boy and she wants to hire him to uncover the heart of corruption in their society or something...but kissing Healer's picture? I have only wondered about this on this rewatch.

...and then I realize, when she puts Healer's pic on her wall in later episode, aside from KMH, that this is the second love she talked about ...again in later episodes. I'm getting flashes of inspiration ladies, I do apologize but it didn't hit me as powerfully as NOW, when I'm writing this comment, how beautifully Song Ji Na wrote this drama.

I am in awe.

I wonder if CYS subconsciously knew that she was falling in love already with Jung Hoo when she put his pic up her wall???

..to be continued..

Hi @LadyHealer12 is back in the heart of Healerland!

I'm so glad you made it!!! No need to apologise... I was just asking around cos it was pretty quiet, but I'm so happy to see you here.

Yes, it's amazing what re-watching a good show can do for us. Where the writing is good and there are many layers, each re-watch is like uncovering more treasure that we missed. I totally agree that I am in awe of Writer-nim whenever I think of how the beginning was set out and how it all came together towards the middle and end. This is one of the main reasons why Healer is the best show to me. I guess, to be fair, I'll have to re-watch other good shows too, to see if things hang together so well... but definitely with Healer, not only do we know that things work well together, we also WANT to re-watch and re-watch. That is it's plus point. :)

About YS kissing the pic of Healer... yes she was kind of hero worshipping both Moon Ho and Healer as the persons who are top in their jobs. While with Moon Ho, she admired him because he did not compromise on the unfavourable truth in his reporting, with Healer it could be because she wanted to be able to know all the dirt behind people for the tabloid Someday News, which she felt an errand boy like Healer would be able to dig up easily, and which she found so hard to do.

She obviously admired his abilities as the best in his field and was curious about him. Although she was interested in Healer, getting close to him, seeing him and hiring him was a thing she felt was too distant for her to really contemplate. Therefore getting his photo was a scoop of sorts to her and so she kissed that photo in triumph... she was so happy to succeed at finally getting to see what he looked like.

At this stage, I do not think she actually had any other feeling for him, just admiration (yes a bit of a crush, maybe), hero-worship and lots of curiosity.... like us when we see JCW's photo!!! LOL!

I mentioned one of the "If not for that..." in my comment 1293.1.1 above... There are more...

The "If Onlys/If Not for": if only Moon Ho had hired Healer before Moon Shik did, the whole premise of Go Sung Chul revealing that Jae Il News was involved would probably not have come to Moon Shik's ears and Healer and GSC would not have been targeted to be 'gotten rid of'.

If not for becoming a target of MS, Healer would have ignored him and not found the original healer group photo in MS's home, which sparked off his investigation into his own past.

If only Healer had not been the best in his field, MH would not have picked him to locate Ji An...and investigate her, which led to their getting together. I shudder to think that it could have been the Sang Soon goons being the ones to track her from the beginning. "It was Moon Ho’s request for him to find out more about her that got him to thrust himself into her life. If not for that…. he would have remained a remote, seemingly indifferent oddball and alone."

If not for Healer's dream to own the island and needing that much more money to buy it, he might not have accepted the commission from MH and might never have met Young Shin, let alone see his photo on her wall.

I'm sure there are more... this is just from the first 2 episodes that sparked my memory!!! What else can you think of?

0

Required fields are marked *

Another thing I noticed, just from watching the first 2 episodes...

There is a repeated theme of photographs that set us thinking and sparks action ... the island on Healer's wall, Moon Ho on YS's wall, the original 5 friends group photo and photo of Ji An and mother before she disappeared. And there are the photographers/camera persons ... Gil Han, Moon Ho himself (although he only took a few in this show), Jung Hoo and even Young Shin. Of these, it was the dreams of MH, JH and YS that were addressed in the first episode. They had a past to resolve and a story to tell in words and pictures. Isn't it wonderful how all three were brought together into one cohesive story and how their dreams merged and were fulfilled.

When thinking about it, I'm always amazed at what Writer-nim created, how the themes and motifs inspire the story and add to it, and how it all hangs together so nicely. :)

Okay, since some beanies here already re-review about episode 1, here's my impressions about it:

Like:
1. All the high-tech concept applied from the very beginning.
As Sunbae GB said, the "system checking" concept was very awesome here and onward. All the gadget and computerized concept here were really hillarious for me.
2. Healer and SJH's outfit style.
No other word but "Cool" for it.
3. I was touched with the "SJH eating alone" scene.
He was very relax here, but still thinking about his dream. Here we can see how focus he was in reaching his dream.
4. KMH character's introduction scene.
All KMH scene about his job was very interesting. I even started download "Newsroom" series, which showed us journalist's world. But haven't watched it yet, btw, but my point being, the journalistic world in Healer drama really triggered me to know more about it. And it started from episode 1.

Less like:
1. CYS's hairstyle. And also her fashion style.
I know that it described her character as a field journalist, but somehow I still want her looked beautiful and feminine. Dunno, maybe it's just about taste and preference. Very subjective. Lol. Sorry. (but from episode 10 onward, I like her since she changed her hairstyle and clothing, cmiiw)
2. Flashback scene.
To be honest, I didn't really like dramas with flashback plot. I know it's important to introduce the story background, but sometimes I think it's better to show current days for the first 2 episodes. And then starting from episode 3 for example, story from the past can be revealed. But, after seeing Healer full episodes, at least I realize that maybe this execution was the best for the whole story.

Hi Jung-hoo's wife,

About YS's earlier appearance. I felt she definitely looked better towards the end. Less disheveled and neater than in the beginning. At the beginning I felt she was just 'playing' at being a reporter somehow. She thought she was serious and had a passion, but her idea of a scoop was ludicrous. Fortunately sunbae Moon Ho took her under his wing. He turned the entire Someday News into something relevant and which could be taken seriously.

About flashbacks - It's a hard balance to achieve in the first few episodes, to introduce most of the important players, give us enough to understand what and why they react the way they do and at the same time give us the present day action to keep us interested.

This is one of the reasons why I really liked the quick computer generated text/words on screen telling us briefly about Healer, YS and MH. I wish there had been one such intro to Ahjumma in the beginning as well. :) However these texts made it seem that we were receiving the profile of each person from Ahjumma, who wanted to remain a hidden person. It was revealing and still so mysterious. LOL! I liked that a lot!

Yup, Sunbae. We should give credit for changing CYS into a very beautiful and great reporter.

I also understand about the flashbacks. Agree with you, it's hard not to show what happened in the past in the beginning episodes.. it's for the sake of the story. Thank you for your explanation, Sunbae. :D

And yess, I also hope there were text on screen describing Ahjumma. Really want it! Really curious what will be written about Ahjumma :D:D
